In Vintage Clip, RuPaul Explains How He Became A Drag Queen ‘By Accident’

RuPaul may be one of the country’s best known drag queens, but the show biz veteran has said that drag wasn’t always in the plans when he envisioned his path to stardom.

It’s a point RuPaul made more than 20 years ago when he appeared as a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1995. While he’d fully embraced his uniqueness, RuPaul had assumed he would follow a well-trodden path to fame when he was young ― through the mainstream media.

“I always wanted to be a star ever since I was a little drag queen growing up in Georgia,” he told Oprah back then.

So, RuPaul began taking acting classes. Then, when he was 21, the budding entertainer wrote into a public access variety show. Appearing on free-spirited “The American Music Show” was RuPaul’s television debut, and he was hooked. Emerging on the drag scene, however, still wasn’t top of mind at the time.

“The drag thing, so, it really happened by accident,” RuPaul said. “I was doing punk and I’d had a mohawk and I’d play with makeup and stuff. Then, some people on a lark said, ‘Why don’t you do drag and see what it looks like?’”

As RuPaul quickly discovered, switching from his punk rock style to drag-queen glam drew rave reviews. “Honey. The reaction I got from people was amazing,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it!”

As RuPaul experimented with his identity, he found not just success ― he’s the charismatic host of the award-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” after all ― but he also found more of himself.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said of dressing in drag. “I think everybody ought to get in some type of drag… It brings out different aspects of your personality. And I think when you’re on this planet, in this lifetime, it’s important to try different things. Life is a banquet and most people are starving to death.”

Pregnant Ciara ‘Thankful For God’s Grace’ After Car Accident

Ciara assured fans she’s OK after being involved in a car accident Friday.

The star, who’s currently pregnant with her second child, was making a left turn in her Mercedes SUV while driving in Los Angeles when a gray Volvo SUV struck the vehicle’s passenger side, TMZ reported. Photos show Ciara walking around and using her cell phone after the incident.

A representative told TMZ, “The driver was illegally in the bus lane and hit the right side of her car.” According to E! News, neither Ciara nor the other driver sustained any injuries.

After the accident, both Ciara and husband Russell Wilson went on Twitter to assure fans the singer was uninjured and experienced no harm to her unborn child.

Ciara and Wilson first announced they were expecting their first child together in October 2016, just three months after their wedding. Ciara has one son, Future Zahir, with ex-fiancée Future. The mom recently posted a video in which her 2-year-old son and husband share a message in support of women’s equality.

What An ‘Awful’ Accident Taught ‘OITNB’ Star Jackie Cruz About Beauty

“Orange is the New Black” star Jackie Cruz began working toward her dream of becoming a singer and an actress at age 6; by the time she was 15, her mother had moved her to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. But Cruz’s life-long plans were unexpectedly put on hold two years later, after she was severely injured in a car accident.

The now 29-year-old actress sat down with MSNBC’s “Cafecito” at P&G’s Orgullosa event in February to discuss her journey to success. In the video, published Tuesday, Cruz opened up about the “really awful” car accident she survived at 17.

“Physically I thought wow, ‘I’m not pretty enough I will never be able to be on TV,’ because I had brain surgery, I was crossed eyed [and] I couldn’t smile.” Cruz said of her thoughts after her accident. “So I would look at myself and all I would see in Hollywood are like beautiful people and I’m like there’s no way that I could make it.”

But after undergoing brain surgery and re-learning how to walk and talk, Cruz said the experience taught her an important lesson about beauty she’d like to pass on to young women everywhere facing challenges.

“Let me tell you something, beauty is something that comes from within and I learned that the hard way. And trust me, with your personality, with your talent, you can do anything that you want.”

Her life-changing car accident wasn’t the only challenge Cruz faced as a teen, during that period in her life she also experienced homelessness.

“I was a bad kid, I didn’t like my mother’s rules,” Cruz said. “The Dominican mom, she’s very strict. I was like, ‘I’m gonna move out’ and she’s like ‘oh you wanna be an adult? Go ahead.’ So I was homeless for a little bit. I tried to go back home, but she’s like ‘no, this is how it is to be an adult. You go be an adult.’ It just made me who I am today. I appreciate everything that’s happening to me and I stay grounded. I know how it is to be at the lowest low.”

To learn more about the actress’ beginnings, her Latina idol and her thoughts on her “OITNB” character watch the full conversation between Cruz and “Cafecito” host Feliciano Garcia in the video above.

Why Planes Crash: An Accident Investigator’s Fight for Safe Skies (Unabridged)

Boarding an airplane strikes at least a small sense of fear into most people. Even though we all have heard that the odds of being struck by lightning are greater than the odds of perishing in a plane crash, it still doesn’t feel that way. Airplane crashes might be rare, but they do happen, and they’re usually fatal. David Soucie insists that most of these deaths could be prevented. He’s worked as a pilot, a mechanic, an FAA inspector, and an aviation executive. He’s seen death up close and personal – deaths of colleagues and friends that might have been prevented if he had approved certain safety measures in the aircrafts they were handling. His years of experience have led Dave to become an impassioned consultant on the topic of airline safety. This includes not only advising the Obama administration, but also taking a leading role in the congressionally funded NextGen interdepartmental initiative in regards to both the department of transportation and the departments of defense, homeland security, FBI, CIA, and others. Find out the truth about airplane safety and discover what the future holds for air travel.

Enrique Iglesias Recovering After Fingers Sliced By Drone In Concert Accident

NEW YORK (AP) — Enrique Iglesias was recovering Sunday after some of his fingers were sliced when he grabbed a drone during a concert in Tijuana, Mexico.

A representative for the singer said in a statement to The Associated Press that Iglesias was “semi-treated” after the accident at the side of the stage to stop the bleeding on Saturday night. He was advised to end the show but went on to perform for an additional 30 minutes. “During the show a drone is used to get crowd shots and some nights Enrique grabs the drone to give the audience a Point of View shot. Something went wrong and he had an accident,” the statement read. “He decided to go on and continued playing for 30 minutes while the bleeding continued throughout the show.”

Concertgoers at Plaza de Toros de Playas posted photos on social media of Iglesias, 40, with blood all over his white T-shirt.

“He was rushed to the airport where an ambulance met him there. He was then put on a plane to L.A. to see a specialist,” the statement read.

Iglesias’ show for 12,000 fans is part of his Sex and Love World Tour. His website says his next show is in July in Mexico City.

Inspiring 8-Year-Old Won’t Let A Tragic Accident Stop Her From Dancing

Alissa Sizemore was playing outside with her siblings one night in May 2014 when a UPS truck ran over her right leg. According to KSL.com, the 7-year-old’s foot couldn’t be saved.

At the time, Alissa’s dance teacher told the local news outlet, “She’ll dance again.” Mom Heather Sizemore recalls Alissa’s determination to do so. When the mom took Alissa’s sisters to their dance studio last summer for dance team placements, the little girl handed her mom her crutches and started to dance. “She hopped to the middle of the room and gave it her all. She wasn’t going to let anybody hold her back,” Heather told PEOPLE.

Members of the dancer’s hometown raised enough money for the little girl to get a prosthetic leg in September 2014 — a big contribution came from an 11-year-old girl who sold her prize pig to donate $ 10,000 to the Sizemore family. After receiving the limb, Alissa started rehearsing for her dance studio’s recital.

“Dancing has been my favorite thing since I was 4. I don’t have part of my leg, but I can’t let that stop me. I still want to dance,” Alissa told PEOPLE.

In late February, the now 8-year-old took the stage to perform a beautiful and inspiring routine to Colbie Caillat’s “Try,” and received a standing ovation.

Watch her performance above, and head over to PEOPLE to read more about Alissa.

Champagne Was Created By Accident, And We Have Mother Nature To Thank

Champagne is a tongue-tingling symbol of celebration, extravagance and class. Poppin’ bottles is an exclusive activity reserved for blinged-out rappers, dripping in diamonds and costly furs, well-paid athletes who’ve won it big and the general elite. (Marilyn Monroe allegedly bathed in a tub filled with 350 bottles of the bubbly drink.)

But the drink wasn’t always the crème de la crème. Just as lobster was once regarded as a poor man’s food, Champagne was considered a result of careless winemaking. In the 1400s, capricious temperature changes in Europe infringed on the fermentation process. “The cold temporarily halted fermentation, the process by which wine is made,” Marina Koren writes in Smithsonian Magazine. “When spring arrived with warmer temperatures, the budding spirits began to ferment again. This produced an excess of carbon dioxide inside wine bottles, giving the liquid inside a fizzy quality.”

The weather-induced effervescence was initially met with disdain. Bottles of the accidental bubbly would continuously explode and the flawed drink was deemed unacceptable by many. But in the same way lobster came to be a divine delicacy, the twice-fermented wine transformed from a spoiled drink into a luxurious libation.

By the end of the 17th century, a monk named Dom Pierre Pérignon (sound familiar?) was asked to fine-tune the drink, and make it even more enriched with bubbles. (These days, champagne contains approximately one million bubbles per glass.) Though Pérignon was not the only one focused on the drink, he is often cited as Champagne’s creator. This could explain why Dom Pérignon-branded Champagne starts at upwards of $ 100. But really, we owe our appreciation to the weather fluke.

Take Champagne’s story as an inspiration. This year, as you clink and toast with a glass that hisses and pops, remember that the best things in life can’t always be planned, and that some accidents are actually miracles. Cheers to you, Champagne.

Walmart: Tracy Morgan Partly To Blame In Truck Accident Because He Wasn’t Wearing Seatbelt

DAVID PORTER, Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan and other people in a limousine struck from behind by a Wal-Mart truck on a highway in June are at least partly to blame for their injuries because they weren’t wearing seatbelts, the company said in a court filing Monday.

The filing was made in federal court in response to a lawsuit Morgan filed in July over the accident, which killed his friend James McNair, who was accompanying the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star back from a show in Delaware. Morgan spent several weeks in rehab with rib and leg injuries.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said in the filing that the passengers’ injuries were caused “in whole or in part” by their “failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device,” which it said constitutes unreasonable conduct.

An attorney representing Morgan and the other plaintiffs called Wal-Mart’s contentions “surprising and appalling.”

“It’s disingenuous,” attorney Benedict Morelli said. “It’s not what they said they were going to do initially, which was take full responsibility. I’m very upset, not for myself but for the families I represent.”

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages. It says the retail giant should have known that its truck driver had been awake for more than 24 hours before the crash and that his commute of 700 miles from his home in Georgia to work in Delaware was “unreasonable.” It also alleges the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said in an email that the company “continues to stand willing to work with Mr. Morgan and the other plaintiffs to resolve this matter.”

Passengers Ardley Fuqua and Jeffrey Millea and Millea’s wife, Krista Millea, also are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Krista Millea was not in the limousine when the crash occurred but is a plaintiff because she has a related loss-of-services lawsuit stemming from the crash.

Truck driver Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges in state court. A criminal complaint also accuses him of not sleeping for more than 24 hours before the crash, a violation of New Jersey law.

A report by federal transportation safety investigators said Roper was driving 65 mph in the minute before he slammed into the limo van. The speed limit on that stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike is 55 mph and was lowered to 45 mph that night because of construction.

Roper had been on the job about 13 1/2 hours at the time of the crash, the report concluded. Federal rules permit truck drivers to work up to 14 hours a day, with a maximum of 11 hours behind the wheel.

Paul Walker’s Car Accident Was Not Caused By Mechanical Issues, Official Says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators have found no evidence that the Porsche carrying “Fast & Furious” actor Paul Walker had mechanical problems before it crashed.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation tells The Associated Press the car lost control due to “speed, and speed alone.” The official requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly.

The investigation also ruled out debris in the roadway as causing the car in which Walker was a passenger to smash into a light pole and tree.

The Nov. 30 crash killed Walker and the driver, his friend and financial adviser Roger Rodas.

Investigators won’t set a firm speed at which they think the car was traveling until Porsche engineers come to California next month to extract information from on-board data collectors.

Cirque du Soleil Accident Leaves Performer Hospitalized

LAS VEGAS — LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Cirque du Soleil performer remains hospitalized after a fall during a show Friday night at the Aria resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

The performance company issued a statement Saturday saying the male artist was appearing in the “Wheel of Death” act during the 7 p.m. performance of “Zarkana” when he slipped and fell off the wheel. The act features two people who perform high-risk feats atop and inside a pair of spinning wheels rotating high above the stage, including rope skipping and jumps.

The company says the show was halted and the performer was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition and expected to be discharged in the next few days.

The company says it has a policy of not releasing performer’s names.

The accident occurred four months after a Cirque du Soleil acrobat died in a fall during a performance of the show “Ka” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

On Tuesday, safety officials announced plans to cite Cirque du Soleil and the MGM after investigators concluded 31-year-old Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell 94 feet to the floor below on June 29 when a wire rope she was suspended from was severed due to her rapid ascent.

Guillot-Guyard was the first Cirque du Soleil performer to die in an onstage accident in the company’s 29-year history.
