The Casting Of A White Actor As Native Hawaiian Hero Cuts Deeper Than You Think

Prominent filmmakers by now have whitewashed so many roles meant for people of color that the internet doesn’t have time to put down its digital torches and pitchforks from one film outrage before the next one goes viral.

But the latest case of cultural appropriation wades into a painful part of American history and targets a very small minority that has been struggling for decades to understand its place within the U.S.: Native Hawaiians.

When it was announced on Tuesday that Zach McGowan ― a white actor who has starred in TV hits including “Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Shameless” ― was cast in the role of real-life Native Hawaiian hero Benehakaka Kanahele in the WWII-era drama “Niʻihau,” people online, Hawaiians especially, responded with anger.

Their ire was a familiar refrain: Why must a white actor play a role meant for a person of color ― again? The announcement reminded many people of Emma Stone’s controversial casting as a part Native Hawaiian and Chinese woman in Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha.”

“In movies and television, you get everyone except us ― everyone but us portraying us,” Anne Keala Kelly, a Native Hawaiian filmmaker, told HuffPost. “It’s a total exploitation of an actual historical event about an actual Hawaiian person.”

Kelly says this issue cuts deep for Native Hawaiians who are still reeling from the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom led by a group of American businessmen in 1893 ― a controversial event that opened the door for the Hawaiian islands’ annexation and eventual statehood in 1959.

Kelly published a documentary about these events in her 2008 film, “Noho Hewa.”

During Hawaii’s annexation and eventual path to statehood, there was an increase in Western presence in the islands that nearly wiped out Native Hawaiian culture: Hawaiian language was banned in schools, Western-owned plantations dominated the lands and, eventually, military presence increased dramatically and tourism skyrocketed.

The casting of a white man in Kanahele’s place is salt in a wound for Hawaiians who have been left feeling erased by Western influence. Kelly called it “Poly-face” ― a version of the phrase “blackface,” but directed at the indigenous people the film “Ni’ihau” portrays: Polynesians.

“It’s cultural cannibalism, it’s like someone eating you while you’re alive,” Kelly told HuffPost. “They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here. It’s the narrative equivalent of ethnic cleansing. We’re being marginalized while we’re still here.”

Gabriel Robertson, the director of “Ni’ihau” did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

It’s cultural cannibalism. They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here.
Anne Keala Kelly

Whitewashing and cultural appropriation aside, critics also say the political timing of “Ni’ihau” puts Hawaii residents ― both native and transplants ― in a dangerous situation at a time when tensions between North Korea and the U.S. have spiked under the Trump administration.

According to early reports, the film retells the true story of a Japanese pilot who crash-landed on Ni’ihau (a private Hawaiian island where tourism is famously banned to protect the native population) during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The surviving pilot convinced two of the island’s residents of Japanese descent to defect against the U.S. The pilot and the defectors took Kanahele and his wife hostage, but were eventually killed after the Hawaiian couple fought back against their captors.

The U.S. Army awarded Kanahele, who was shot three times during the struggle, with the Medal for Merit and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions.

Ku’ualoha Ho’omanawanui, a professor of Hawaiian literature at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, believes that recounting this story now could stoke anti-Asian fears and provoke more tension between the U.S. and North Korea.

The film “is particularly problematic in an age of Trumpian political warmongering with North Korea, with Hawaii as a potential nuclear target, and a potential ground zero for nuclear annihilation, especially if China gets involved,” he told HuffPost.

Indeed, North Korea has ramped up its nuclear program in an attempt to develop technology advanced enough to deliver a strike that could reach the U.S. And while most experts believe Hawaii faces no immediate threat from the Hermit Kingdom, military officials in the Pacific have renewed their focus on protecting the islands from a potential strike.

Ho’omanawanui said of the film, “This kind of careless, insensitive decision-making ― including the casting [decision] ― does not consider the real-world impacts on Native Hawaiians, Hawaii residents, and other peoples of color when we are not made visible as real people with a full range of human experiences and emotions.”

“Rather we are characters for white people to try on and mimic in their quest to fulfill their own ignorant, arrogant, incorrect fantasies about Native Hawaiians and other peoples of color.”

Both Kelly and Ho’omanawanui are convinced that the film, which has already received mainstream attention, will once again show the masses a Westernized version of their native culture ― and they’re upset that non-Hawaiian people have taken control of a heroic narrative that belongs to a Native Hawaiian.

“There is no reason Native Hawaiians or other people of color shouldn’t be cast in this film,” Ho’omanawanui said. “Moreover, there is no reason they shouldn’t be included as writers, directors, producers and crew, and there’s equally no reason white people need to take the lead in telling this or any other story.”

As a filmmaker, Kelly thinks the only way to solve Hollywood’s problem with cultural appropriation is for prominent filmmakers and producers to first realize there is a problem. But as big-budget films that whitewash roles for minorities continue to roll out, it’s clear some filmmakers are not learning.

“It’s impossible to bridge a gap if the people in power pretend [that there is no problem] or deny that a gap exists,” she told HuffPost.

Kelly says she believes the average American audience would care about true Native Hawaiian narratives if native filmmakers were given a chance to represent their own people.

“The tough part is that most people would give a damn. Most people would care if they heard the truth. Most people do care about justice,” she said. “But they’re being entertained into not caring about it.”

And if Hollywood’s powers-that-be still aren’t convinced that the modern movie-watching audience is craving more authenticity in stories about people of color, the backlash trailing “Ni’ihau” should be proof enough.

‘Walking Dead’ Actor Daniel Newman Comes Out As LGBT

Walking Dead” actor Daniel Newman opened up about his sexuality publicly for the first time, coming out as LGBT to fans on his social media platforms.

The 35-year-old star, who has also appeared in “The Dark Night Rises” and “Sex and the City,” first made the announcement on Twitter Thursday evening.

Though he stopped short of using the words “gay” or “bisexual” in reference to himself, Newman elaborated further in an emotional, nearly-seven-minute YouTube video. The star said he felt compelled to come out after volunteering at a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth in the clip, which can be viewed below.

“I was helping out and volunteering at some homeless youth shelters, and this girl came up to me. She was like, ‘Thank you so much for helping out with [LGBTQ kids], and she said it like she didn’t deserve it,” Newman said. “She said, ‘Because you’re straight.’” When the actor told the girl that he wasn’t, in fact, straight, she informed him that coming out could “help change our lives.”

That encounter, he said, “hit me like a gut punch. I realized how important it is, in this day and age, to be visible, have people know who you are.” After noting that he wanted to to steer clear of politics, he added, “You see at this moment how rights are getting stripped from people so quickly. Who are the easiest people to take rights from? People that are invisible, people that are staying silent.”

“When you are accomplishing incredible things and you’re hiding who you are, you’re hurting hundreds of millions of people,” he said. “So, by us staying quiet, we’re partially to blame for kids getting beat up and ridiculed, stereotypes and stigmas. If you don’t like them, you need to be visible, to change them.” He went to offer praise for men who have been labeled “sissies” for their effeminate behavior, noting, “They’re the strongest because they didn’t have a choice. Those guys are incredible and so, so amazing.”

In a Friday interview with People, Newman cited his southern upbringing as the reason why he’d remained silent about his sexuality until this week. “I didn’t really think about it really as hiding. I never thought of myself as being in a closet or hidden,” he said. “It just was that I didn’t really feel like talking about my private life.”

Thrilled to see you living authentically, Daniel!

Manchester By the Sea Director Defends Casey Affleck After Student Journalist Slams the Actor

The Oscar-winning writer/director of Manchester By the Sea is slamming a student journalist from his alma mater for writing an opinion piece highlighting the sexual harassment allegations against the film’s star, Casey Affleck.

Kenneth Lonergan condemned the article in a letter to the editor of The Wesleyan Argus, in which he accused the sophomore journalism student of writing a “tangle of illogic, misinformation, and flat-out slander” against Affleck, who recently won an Oscar for his performance in the film.

Last week, in a piece titled “How Wesleyan Is Complicit in Affleck’s Sexual Misconducted by Endorsing Lonergan ’84,” assistant opinion editor Connor Aberle criticized the college for its “praise” of Lonergan, and called Affleck’s Best Actor win “severely problematic.”

“Wesleyan University cannot insist on claiming credit for Kenneth Lonergan unless they also acknowledge their complicity in the success of a perpetrator of sexual violence,” Aberle wrote. “Lonergan essentially won Affleck his Oscar by handpicking Affleck for his movie.”

Aberle’s comments refer to the two sexual-harassment lawsuits that were filed against Affleck in 2010 by two women who worked with him on the film I’m Still Here. Affleck has denied the allegations, and settled the suits out of court for undisclosed amounts. In the settlement, the actor did not admit any guilt, and he and his accusers are barred from discussing details of the case.

Lonergan responded to Aberle’s article with an opinion piece of his own, titled, “How Connor Aberle and The Argus are Complicit in Slandering Casey Affleck.” The director slammed Aberle’s writing as slander, writing, “Only the author’s presumed youth can possibly excuse his deeply offensive display of ignorance, and warped PC-fueled sense of indignation.”

RELATED: Casey Affleck Responds to Criticism Following Controversial Oscar Win

He added, “He writes as if Casey Affleck were actually guilty of a crime. In fact, it was alleged 7 years ago, in a civil lawsuit for breach of contract, that Casey sexually harassed two women formerly in his employ. Casey denounced the allegations as being totally fabricated. Like most civil suits, this one was settled out of court by mutual consent on undisclosed terms … In other words nothing was proved or disproved. So how does Mr Aberle dare to write as if he knows who was telling the truth and who was not?”

After Affleck won the Oscar, many took to social media to criticize the decision. In a recent interview with the Boston Globe, Affleck — the younger brother of Ben Affleck — addressed the criticism, saying, “There’s really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”

Affleck told the Globe that he is not permitted to speak about the now-settled lawsuits, and said that the people condemning him on social media don’t know the facts of the situation. “I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent,” he added. “Everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else.”

‘Moonlight’ Actor Trevante Rhodes On Oscar Flub And Calvin Klein Ad Reactions

Trevante Rhodes says “there’s no better moment than right now” for his burgeoning acting career.

Since the release of “Moonlight” last October, the 27-year-old Louisiana native has earned praises and award recognition for his breakout role as Black, the adult portrayal of the film’s protagonist, Chiron, who struggles with growing up in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.

After the movie’s Golden Globe win for Best Motion Picture, Drama, and Oscar win for Best Picture, Rhodes is now focused on repeating his success with upcoming roles in Netflix’s college-hazing drama “Burning Sands” and in “The Predator,” a sequel to the 1987 sci-fi film.

On the heels of the DVD release of “Moonlight,” Rhodes dished to The Huffington Post about the film’s Oscar win, how director Barry Jenkins has enhanced his love for cinema, and his thoughts on his much talked-about Calvin Klein underwear campaign.

Congratulations on your recent Oscar win for Best Picture. What was your immediate reaction to the onstage flub following Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally announcing “La La Land” as the winner?

Honestly, in that particular moment when you hear “La La Land” [as the winner], you’re happy for the cast and the crew because we’ve been going on this journey with them for the past few months. And so, we got to know them very well. Just like what [“La La Land” producer] Jordan Horowitz said when he was up there [accepting the award]. They’re just a wonderful group of people that we were fortunate enough to get to know. And so, we were just happy for them.

And then you see this guy walking onstage with an envelope. I was sitting next to André Holland and turned to him and was like, “André, something’s going on. Something bad is about to happen.” And he said, “Nah, nah, nah.” And then the envelope gets to the front and we saw what we saw.

And so I got Mahershala [Ali] and Barry [Jenkins] up to run up onstage. Thankfully, we were the Best Picture winner. It was always a high. There was never a high moment or low moment. There was never that contrast. It just went from being 100 percent excited for “La La Land” to 200 percent excited for “Moonlight.”

What would you have said onstage as an acceptance speech had you been given the opportunity to share a message with the audience?

I would’ve obviously thanked everyone involved in the process of making and supporting the film. And obviously, the fans and the people who see themselves as me [Chiron] in the film, which is most important. Just love yourself and we see you, we see you, we see you. And thank you.

Given this was your first time working with Barry Jenkins, how would you describe your experience filming with Barry?

It was incredible. Barry is a very heartfelt and intellectual person. I’m very inquisitive, and I always have questions and need to touch things to see how it works, or why it works. And Barry was someone who always, always 100 percent had an answer to every question I had. Which for me, is the most fulfilling thing. And so, to have that intellect and to be able to learn from someone with that kind of intellect and also to be able to work with someone who had equally that amount of compassion, and empathy, and love, it was just a unique experience to grow with and learn from. And I’m a big cinema fan, and I love doing films because they have a different way to depict different stories and events. And Barry is a foreign filmmaker in a sense.

But to be a part of something where someone has so much style and so much love for the craft is amazing. I learned from that. And I kind of grew my love for cinema through my conversations with Barry. Because obviously he’s even more of a cinema buff. So to be able to pick his brain whenever, or send him a text message like, “What movie should I go study?” He’ll go ahead and send it to me. So yeah, it was a great experience.

Did you experience any challenges while portraying Chiron?

No, I don’t believe so. I tried to think of some, but then I feel like that’s just trying to force myself to say, “Oh, well, this part was difficult,” but, nah, man. It was really just … I won’t say it was easy, but I knew who the person was. The script was written so well and I had so much faith, and Barry had faith in myself. And if you put yourself out on a limb, you have someone like Barry who has your back. It was really again just trusting in Barry and trusting in the script and not having any fear to put myself out there.

Were there certain specific experiences or people that you researched or looked to in order to develop the nuances of Chiron?

I’m the kind of person where I always digest everything around me. So for me, it was kind of like understanding that, and honestly, I had my best friend since I was 9 years old, he came out recently. So, growing up, I knew his struggles were bad. And that part of the story was with me. But as far as the nuances, those were things I picked up on just by watching people in passing in a sense. And not judging people, but just understanding and being curious about why people walk a certain way, or why people have this sort of closed-off demeanor. All these different things trying to understand why people do what we do. Just trying to place certain things to develop this character’s physicality.

And so, it was just picking and pulling from people that I’ve seen in passing, and walking in that headspace through my life for a few weeks to get a hang of it and then just bringing it into the film.

What has been the most meaningful feedback or praise you have received about the film so far?

Ah, man, just “Thank you” ― “Thank you for allowing me to see myself, because I haven’t seen myself on screen.” That’s something that I hear quite often, and that’s the highest praise you could ever get. Someone who is teary-eyed, shaking, and just needs to hug you. They can’t even verbalize the way that they feel, but you see so much in their eyes, because they’re so grateful for you being a part of something that helps depict their life story, depict their struggle and allow them to breathe in a sense. Because they haven’t been able to do that throughout their entire life, because they felt the need to shield themselves from the world. Just having those moments with the people is just the most amazing thing. That’s better than anything.

Do you plan to continue to use your artistry to amplify underrepresented narratives on screen?

One million percent. That’s the goal. That’s why I wanna do bigger films, so my face and my “brand” gets broaden so that I can do another film like “Moonlight” and hopefully it reaches more people, because [people will say], “Oh, Trevante Rhodes is in that? Ah, man, I don’t know what it’s about, but I’ll go check it out.” And then they end up getting a different experience, because I’m a part of something. So absolutely, it’s just about finding the right material, telling the right story with the right person who also has a like-minded vision and the same kind of heart.

Prior to acting, you were active as a track and field sprinter in college. What made you transition from sports to pursuing a career in acting?

I was given an opportunity to do sports in college and get a degree because of it. I ran track for the University of Texas and was studying to be a petroleum landman. And I was gifted an opportunity to audition for a film during my last semester in college, which I discovered while jogging around campus. And I kind of got the bug from that instant when I didn’t get the role, but it was kind of like sports in a sense.

It’s like the most individualized team sport, like track and field. You do your best to give your best performance so that the totality of the film can be great. So, I just had the opportunity to continue being an athlete without breaking down my body as much.

In addition to acting, you may have a bright future in modeling thanks to the responses from your recent Calvin Klein ad. What were your thoughts about the reactions?

[Laughs] Ah, man. [Laughs] It was funny, because I get — obviously people tag you on photos, and it’s all over New York, like on the streets, and it’s insane, man! I work out hard, and so now the world sees the product of you working out. And I’m like, “Ah, that’s really cool.” I don’t know any other way to describe it. It’s Calvin Klein, that’s iconic, you know. Marky Mark did that. I was like, “It’s ‘Moonlight’ and Marky Mark, baby.” It’s incredible.

And it’s black and white and it just looks so beautiful. And it’s to amplify a movie that’s so beautiful that we all care about so much that it ended up getting Best Picture. Like, there’s no better moment than right now. And then thinking about Mahershala [Ali], he just had a daughter and to be a part of that is really, really cool.

The ladies want to know, are you single and what qualities do you look for in a partner?

[Laughs] Yeah, I’m single. As for what I look for, I don’t know any other way to put it, but I look for truth, and honesty, because that’s something that’s few and far between. And obviously, someone who takes care of herself physically. But truth, honesty, and love, that’s what’s most important. Oh, and someone who can vibe to some jazz. Because I love jazz music a lot.

“Moonlight” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Alec Baldwin-Linked ’30 Rock’ Actor Handed In His Resignation To Donald Trump

Like his “30 Rock” colleague, Alec Baldwin, actor Maulik Pancholy has gone on to join the resistance against President Donald Trump in his own way.

Along with other members of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Pancholy handed in his resignation to the president on Wednesday, citing Trump’s controversial executive orders affecting refugees and immigrants.

President Barack Obama originally appointed Pancholy to the commission, which works with the federal government to serve Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the United States. His appointment was scheduled to last through September 2017.

The resigning members released a joint letter, excerpted below:

We can no longer serve a President whose policies aim to create outcomes that are diametrically opposed to our principles, goals, and charge … Since your Inauguration, the Executive Orders you have issued and policies you have promulgated have greatly impeded the ability of the federal government to serve all who live here.

The actor tweeted about the decision earlier this week and has spent the last few days retweeting various follow-ups.

Pancholy also wrote his own separate note to Trump:

On “30 Rock,” Pancholy played the assistant to Alec Baldwin’s character, Jack Donaghey. Donaghey memorably fired Jonathan without any thought to prove a point to Tina Fey’s character, Liz Lemon.

It must have felt good for Pancholy to tell Trump there would be no “you’re fired” moment, because he’s already quit.

Here’s the relevant “30 Rock” scene:

Man Vows To Eat Jason Segel’s Picture Every Day Until Actor Eats His

Chew on this: A Toronto man wants a taste of celebrity and he’ll stomach anything to get it.

Noah Maloney, who posts YouTube videos under the tasteful and not-gross-at-all moniker of “Dog Shit,” has vowed to eat a picture of actor Jason Segel every day until the actor returns the, well, you can’t really call it a favor.

Maloney posted his first video on Thursday and he spends four minutes and 21 seconds chewing on Segel’s headshot.

HuffPost has reached out to Maloney and Segel to get their reactions, but both have kept their lips sealed thus far.

The complete video is above, but you can watch the best parts through the magic of “GIF-arama.”

Here he is taking his first bites.

Now he’s working on the head.

You can’t eat that much fibrous paper without a water break.

Keeping your mouth closed when chewing up a photo of actor Jason Segel is the epitome of good manners.

Of course, when your nose itches, it’s hard not to scratch.

Mmmm, the last bite is just as good as the first (which probably wasn’t that good to begin with).

Bikini Babe: Ariel Winter Lives It Up in Cabo with Actor Levi Meaden

Despite her name, Ariel Winter seems to be a fan of the beach and warm weather.

The 18-year-old actress ditched the fall coolness in favor of the sun and sand in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with some pals, including actor Levi Meaden.

Winter’s Snapchat was filled with envy-inducing scenes of waves crashing on the rocks as well as tropical drinks and meals. The Modern Family actress also flaunted her bikini body, posting a video of her twerking backside and a video posing on a jetty on Instagram.

“Caboooo it’s lit,” she captioned the vacation shot.

Winter underwent breast reduction surgery last year, when she went from a size 32F cup to a 34D, after receiving unwanted attention for her body.

“It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects,” she said in an interview with Glamour.com. “Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet had to do with ‘Ariel Winter’s Crazy Cleavage!’ or ‘Ariel Winter Shows Huge Boobs at an Event!’ That’s all people would recognize me by – not, ‘Oh, she does great work on Modern Family.’ ”

Since then, she’s been proudly embracing her body on social media and on the red carpet.

“Embrace all that you are,” she posted on Instagram in June. “Don’t let those outside voices become your inner voice #mychoice #loveyourcurves.”

‘7th Heaven’ Actor Stephen Collins’ Divorce Finalized

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran television actor Stephen Collins and his wife of nearly 30 years have finalized their divorce, an acrimonious breakup that revealed the former “7th Heaven” star had inappropriate contact with underage girls decades ago.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael J. Convey on Friday approved a divorce judgment that ended Collins’ marriage to Faye Grant, who first disclosed molestation allegations against her estranged husband in court filings. Collins acknowledged he acted inappropriately with three underage girls in incidents that occurred between 1973 and 1994. The revelation cost Collins several roles after audio of a 2012 therapy session in which he discussed the incidents was posted by celebrity website TMZ last year. Grant recorded the session but denies leaking the audio to the website.

The pair’s divorce judgment calls for all but two copies of the recording to be destroyed. Both copies will be retained for 10 years by attorney Shawn Holley, who represents many celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber.

Collins or Grant can only use the recordings if they need to defend themselves from a civil or criminal case, the judgment states.

The judgment also states that Collins will not have to pay his wife any future spousal support payments, however Grant will receive some of Collins’ pension plan and investment income each month.

A divorce trial was scheduled to begin next month. The trial would have focused on the financial fallout from the release of the therapy session audio and would have divided the pair’s assets.

Grant and Collins and their attorneys reached a settlement on Friday after negotiating for several days at a downtown Los Angeles courthouse.

They both said during Friday’s hearing that the marriage was irretrievably broken and could not be fixed through further counseling.

Collins filed for divorce in May 2012 and the case received little attention until the molestation allegations became public.

The actor acknowledged in an interview with Katie Couric that he molested one girl and engaged in sexual misconduct with two other underage girls. He denied he was a pedophile and said he has controlled his urges since 1994.

Grant included the molestation accusations in divorce proceedings and authorities in New York and Los Angeles have investigated the claims, but Collins has not been charged.

The incidents occurred between 1973 and 1994, according to a statement Collins released to People magazine in December.

“Forty years ago, I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret,” Collins wrote. “I have been working to atone for it ever since.”

How David Oyelowo Sold His Father on the Idea of Becoming an Actor | Oprah Prime | OWN

David Oyelowo, 38, stars as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the film Selma. Born in England and raised in his parents’ native Nigeria, David earned a scholarship to the distinguished London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and went on to become the first black actor to play an English king at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Still, David says his father wasn’t totally supportive when he first told him he wanted to be an actor after “sneakily applying for drama school.”

“Being an artist, being an actor for a Nigerian family, is bizarre,” he says. “This is not a proper job.” In the video above, David shares the key argument that changed his father’s mind.

White House Says ‘Sophisticated Actor’ Hacked Sony, Declines To Blame North Korea

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says evidence shows the hack against Sony Pictures was carried out by a “sophisticated actor” with “malicious intent.”

But spokesman Josh Earnest is declining to blame North Korea. Earnest says he doesn’t want to get ahead of investigations by the Justice Department and the FBI.

A U.S. official says federal investigators have linked North Korea to the attack. The official spoke on condition of anonymity earlier this week.

Sony has canceled the Christmas Day release of “The Interview” after many theaters said they would hold off on showing the film.

Threats have been made against theaters planning to show the film, which is a comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korea’s leader.

Nicholas Brendon, ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Actor, Arrested In Idaho

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An actor best known for his role in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is apologizing for actions that led to his arrest in a hotel lobby in southwest Idaho.

Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris on the hit show that ran from 1997 to 2003, said Monday on Facebook that he erred by mixing prescribed pain medication and alcohol. “The result was embarrassing and unacceptable,” he wrote. “I intend to seek appropriate treatment and therapy for my medical ailments as well as my emotional demons.”

He said the physical pain came from a cyst behind his kneecap, but he didn’t elaborate on the cause of the emotional demons.

Brendon was participating in the Tree City Comic Con at a Boise expo center where fans could have a photo taken with him for $ 40 and get his autograph for $ 30.

Boise officers took the 43-year-old actor into custody after responding to a disturbance around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Brendon faces misdemeanor charges of resisting officers and malicious injury to property.

Police say Brendon showed signs of being intoxicated and refused to remain seated while officers spoke with witnesses. Hotel officials say Brendon broke a decorative dish and they want to press charges. Authorities in a statement Saturday said Brendon was booked in the Ada County Jail and released after posting bond.

“During this difficult time, I appreciate understanding as I pursue rehabilitation — and I value support as I earn redemption with my family, friends, and fans,” Brendon wrote in the statement confirmed as his by his booking agent, Kahmeela Adams, in an email to The Associated Press.

This was the first year for the Tree City Comic Con that besides Brendon drew an array writers, illustrators and other actors, including John Rhys-Davies who was Gimli in “Lord of the Rings,” Nichelle Nichols who played Lt. Uhura in “Star Trek: The Original Series,” and Verne Troyer, who played Mini Me in “Austin Powers.”

Event organizers didn’t return a phone call from the AP on Monday.

Eli Wallach Dead: ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ Actor Dies At 98

WASHINGTON, June 25 (Reuters) – Eli Wallach, an early practitioner of method acting who made a lasting impression as the scuzzy bandit Tuco in “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, died on Tuesday at the age of 98, the New York Times reported.

Wallach appeared on the big screen well into his 90s in Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” and Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street” sequel and other films.

“It’s what I wanted to do all my life,” Wallach said of his work in an interview in 2010.

Having grown up the son of Polish Jewish immigrants in an Italian-dominated neighborhood in New York, Wallach might have seemed an unlikely cowboy, but some of his best work was in Westerns.

Many critics thought his definitive role was Calvera, the flamboyant, sinister bandit chief in “The Magnificent Seven”. Others preferred him in “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” as Tuco, who was “the ugly”, opposite Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti Western.

Years later, Wallach said strangers would recognize him and start whistling the distinctive theme from the film.

Wallach graduated from the University of Texas, where he picked up the horseback-riding skills that would serve him well in later cowboy roles, and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse Actors Studio before World War Two broke out.

DYNAMIC ACTOR, PROLIFIC CAREER

“Wallach is the quintessential chameleon, effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of characters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gave him an honorary Oscar in 2010, wrote in a profile on its website.

After serving as an Army hospital administrator during the war, he found work on the New York stage and took classes at the Actor’s Studio, which used Method acting in which actors draw on personal memories and emotions to flesh out a role.

He appeared in “This Property Is Condemned” and ended up marrying the show’s leading lady, Anne Jackson – a marriage that also led to several stage and screen collaborations.

Wallach made a name on Broadway with roles in two Tennessee Williams’ works, “Camino Real” and “The Rose Tattoo,” for which he won a Tony in 1951, as well as a two-year run in “Mr. Roberts.”

His first movie was another Williams work, “Baby Doll” in 1956. Other major films included “How the West Was Won”, “Mystic River”, “The Holiday”, “Lord Jim” and “The Misfits” – in which he starred with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe with John Huston directing an Arthur Miller script – and “The Godfather Part 3.”

Despite the notable movies, Wallach said it was his portrayal of the villain Mr. Freeze on the “Batman” television show of the 1960s that generated the most fan mail.

Wallach titled his autobiography “The Good, the Bad and Me: In My Anecdotage”. He and his wife lived in New York and had three children.

The New York Times said his death had been confirmed by his daughter. (Reporting by Bill Trott in Washington; Additional reporting by Eric M. Johnson in Seattle; Editing by Clarence Fernandez and Andrew Heavens)

Herb Jeffries Dead: Jazz Singer And Actor Known As ‘The Bronze Buckaroo’ Dies At 100 (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Herb Jeffries, the jazz singer and actor who performed with Duke Ellington and was known as the “Bronze Buckaroo” in a series of all-black 1930s Westerns, died of heart failure Sunday morning at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 100.

His death was confirmed by Raymond Strait, who worked with Jeffries on his not-yet-published autobiography titled “Color of Love.” With a mellow voice and handsome face, Jeffries became familiar to jazz fans, but segregation in the film industry limited his movie career. He scored a big hit with Ellington as the vocalist on “Flamingo,” recorded in 1940 and later covered by a white singer, the popular vocalist Tony Martin.

Among the other songs he did with Ellington were “There Shall Be No Night” and “You, You Darlin’.”

“The camaraderie in his band was like a bunch of guys in college,” Jeffries recalled in the book “Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music.” ”Ellington had a knack for developing talent and stars. … He was more like a father to me than a boss.”

Jeffries has been described as the only black singing cowboy star in Hollywood history and, more recently, after the deaths of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and others, as the “last of the singing cowboys.”

Sometimes billed as Herbert Jeffrey, he starred in four Westerns aimed at black audiences from 1937 to 1939: “Harlem on the Prairie,” ”Two-Gun Man From Harlem,” ”The Bronze Buckaroo” and “Harlem Rides the Range.”

As The New York Times noted, the low-budget films (produced by a white man, Richard C. Kahn) are “notable less for what’s in them than that they exist at all.”

Jeffries starred as Bob Blake. The films featured his horse Stardusk, the vocal group the Four Tones, and comic relief from prolific character actor Mantan Moreland. Among the songs: “I’m a Happy Cowboy,” ”Get Along Mule” and “(Got the) Payday Blues.”

“The Bronze Buckaroo” was recently revived on a DVD release called “Treasures of Black Cinema.”

Jeffries “did something outrageous, and then rode off into the sunset,” actor-director Mario Van Peebles told People magazine in 2005. “He did us proud.”

Jeffries remained active as a singer into his 80s and 90s, touring and putting out the 1995 CD “The Bronze Buckaroo (Rides Again)” and following it up in 2000, with “The Duke and I.” Among the honors that came his way late in life was a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicated in 2004.

“I don’t believe in age,” Jeffries told The New York Times in 1995, when he was appearing at a local club. “I believe this magnificent thing we have on our shoulders can help you evolve,” he said. “In jazz, we keep going. There’s no such thing as retiring, or being retired, so you never feel unwanted or useless. And that keeps your body vital.”

He was born in Detroit to a racially mixed couple, referring to himself in a 2004 interview with The Oklahoman as “an Italian-looking mongrel with a percentage of Ethiopian blood, which enabled me to get work with black orchestras.”

He lamented the days touring in the South when he was with Earl Hines in the 1930s. Black audiences were made to stand separately off in a corner and not allowed to dance.

“I don’t think anybody was thrilled about the conditions, but if you wanted to advance and develop you couldn’t show anger,” he said.

He made light of the covering of “Flamingo,” too, recalling he joked with Martin that he knew Martin had copied him because “you made the same mistake in the lyrics that I did.”

Jeffries told American Visions, a publication on African-American culture, in 1997 that he was inspired to seek backing for the cowboy movies after seeing a black boy crying because other children with him “wouldn’t let him play cowboy. But in the real West, one of every four cowboys was black.”

But he had no plans to star in them himself, he said, until the search for a suitable actor-singer-rider came up short and he embarked on a crash course on lasso handling and other Western skills.

Strait said Jeffries recently had several surgeries that “just wore him out.” He added that Jeffries “believed in one world and one people and was one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. He was always funding something or doing something for kids.”

Jeffries is survived by his fifth wife, Savannah; three daughters; and two sons.

Jerry Seinfeld Is The Richest Actor In Hollywood Thanks To ‘Seinfeld’ Reruns: Report

The last episode of “Seinfeld” may have aired 16 years ago, but the eponymous star of the Emmy Award-winning sitcom is still said to be raking in the dough thanks to the show.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld speaks onstage at Spike TV’s ‘Don Rickles: One Night Only’ on May 6, 2014 in New York City.

According to Wealth-X, a Singapore-based company that researches the ultra-rich, Jerry Seinfeld raked in at least $ 400 million last year thanks to syndication deals for “Seinfeld.” (Last year, the Independent reported reruns of the show were estimated to have generated some $ 3 billion since the sitcom went off the air). That, together with more recent projects like 2007’s “The Bee Movie,” have kept the 60-year-old comedian’s coffers amply stocked, Wealth-X said in a media release this week. So stocked, in fact, that the company has dubbed him the richest actor in Hollywood — and possibly the world.

“With an estimated net worth of US$ 820 million… Jerry Seinfeld is laughing all the way to the bank,” Wealth-X wrote in the release.

Second on the company’s “Hollywood and Bollywood Rich List,” which compared the estimated net worth of actors and actresses from the U.S. and India, was Shah Rukh Khan (estimated net worth: $ 600 million), a prolific Bollywood actor. Tom Cruise, Tyler Perry and Johnny Depp also made it into the top five.

Sam Worthington Assault Case To Be Dismissed As ‘Avatar’ Actor Reaches Agreement

NEW YORK (AP) — “Avatar” actor Sam Worthington is on track to get his New York assault case dismissed after being accused of punching a photographer, who also was arrested.

The Australian actor was due in court Thursday. But electronic court records show the misdemeanor case was resolved April 8 with an agreement that it will be dismissed if Worthington stays out of trouble for six months. The Daily News first reported on the development. Worthington’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, confirmed Tuesday the case was set for dismissal. Manhattan prosecutors declined to comment. The arrangement is common for first-time misdemeanor arrests.

Worthington says he was protecting his girlfriend after photographer Sheng Li tried to trip her Feb. 23; Li says Worthington attacked him.

Prosecutors offered the same deal to Li but he turned it down.
