Star Wars: Did Adam Driver Spoil Rey’s Identity?

Actor Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, may have let slip a very big SPOILER about Rey during a recent interview.

Seriously, SPOILERS ahead if Driver’s statement is accurate!

Still here? OK, consider yourself warned!

In a chat with GQ Magazine, Driver recalled his early conversations with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams about Kylo Ren’s motivations and character: “I remember the initial conversations about having things ‘skinned’, … peeling away layers to evolve into other people, and the person Kylo’s pretending to be on the outside is not who he is. He’s a vulnerable kid who doesn’t know where to put his energy, but when he puts his mask on, suddenly, he’s playing a role. JJ had that idea initially and I think Rian

Brainiac, Doomsday, Hawkwoman, Adam Strange to Appear on Krypton TV Series

Today at the Comic-Con panel for Krypton — coming to Syfy in 2018 — DC TV head Geoff Johns revealed that, although Krypton is a prequel series, DC heroes Adam Strange and Hawkwoman, and DC villains Brainiac and Doomsday, will be a part of the show.

So how will that work? Well, Johns explained that while Krypton takes place in the past and centers around Superman’s grandfather, Seyg-El (Cameron Cuffe), “it’s about a conspiracy from the present that’s traveled back in time to Krypton to prevent the birth of Superman.” That’s where we get Adam Strange and Hawkwoman battling to stop the evil plan and save the present.

Johns then went on to drop the name Doomsday as another character who will arrive on the show, along with Brainiac. Executive producer Cameron Welsh added “What we love about Brainiac is that not only is he an incredible foil for anyone he faces, but also he has a really deep history dating back to his family on Colu. He is the nexus point between man and machine, which is a very relevant thing to be talking about now. He’s a very real character.”

Adam Lambert Responds To Rumors He’s Dating Sam Smith

In our dreams, Adam Lambert and Sam Smith would make an adorable couple, but alas, there’s no romance heating up between the two pop stars for now.

On Thursday’s installment of “Watch What Happens Live,” Lambert told host Andy Cohen that although he and Smith have done “a lot of bonding” over the past year, there was no truth in any of the media speculation that the two are more than just friends.

“I love that rumor, actually. The minute I heard it, I texted him,” Lambert, 35, said, responding to a fan’s inquiry. After shrugging off the romantic suggestion, he praised Smith, noting, “He’s such a nice guy. He’s so funny.”

The two stars have, in fact, spent quality time together in the past. In March 2016, the guys were spotted together at the New York nightclub No. 8. DJ Dawson posted a photograph of himself posing with Lambert and Smith on Instagram.

Lambert elaborated further about his friendship with the “Stay With Me” singer in the “Watch What Happens Live” interview Thursday. “We did ride a rickshaw in London from one club to another, wasted, at like 3 in the morning,” he said. “And I ran into him in Mykonos this summer.”

Fortunately for us, Lambert documented both of those encounters with Smith for posterity on Instagram

Though Smith, 24, has spent much of the past year out of the limelight, Lambert is gearing up to the road once more. In June, he’ll kick off a North American tour with Queen, playing 25 cities across the country.

Sizzle or not, Lambert and Smith no doubt have a lot to talk about as two of the pop world’s most out-and-proud performers. And there’s no reason the two can’t make some sweet music in the studio. C’mon, boys ― gift us with some ear candy!

Adam Pascal Talks Crossword Puzzles, Sobriety And Taking The Role Of Shakespeare In Something Rotten On Tour

2016-12-20-1482264826-9400906-PascalAdamheadshotPhotoJoshLehrer.jpg

I met up with Adam Pascal at the St. James Theatre where he, along with the rest of the talented cast, welcome theatergoers to the Renaissance nightly in the tongue-in-cheek Broadway show Something Rotten. Although the Broadway show will be ending its run on January 1st, Adam, along with Rob McClure and Josh Grisetti, will be taking the show on tour. I met up with Adam Pascal in his dressing room at the theatre. He’s still as good-looking as he was in his Rent days, and was introspective and thoughtful as we covered a wide variety of topics.

Is there something that you bring with you to every dressing room?
A crossword puzzle book. I’m obsessed with crossword puzzles. I find them very soothing and meditative. I’m not someone who puts up pictures and moves into dressing rooms. If it’s a good part, I’m not in the dressing room too much!

You live in California. Is your family still there?
Yes, it’s the real bain of my existence, being separated from them. But moving back here isn’t the right choice for us. We’ve been out there for ten years, so my kids have their lives and their friends out there. This is what I do, and I do love it. And as long as people keep responding positively to the work that I do onstage, then I’m going to strive to do it and keep getting better and expanding my perceived abilities.

What’s the best part of it for you?
Feeling like I did a good job. That’s why I prefer theater to camera work. You get a full complete experience; getting to the end of the story and knowing that you just entertained however many people, hopefully a full house. And you get a sense of accomplishment every day. You don’t get that immediate gratification, that reaction, in film and television work as its very impersonal, and I respond to the feeling of a job well done.

This show is, in part, a spoof on Shakespeare. How you ever performed in a Shakespeare production?
No, I haven’t.

Would you want to?
I don’t think I would. It’s not my thing. To be completely frank with you, I’m not moved by it, I don’t understand the language enough to be moved by the material. So I don’t strive to get to that level where I could be a Shakespearean actor. I think it needs to be in your blood. Maybe I’m too simple, but I’ve seen a number of Shakespearean productions and I was left feeling empty and bored.

2016-12-20-1482264767-2815398-SRAdamPascal0074rscusethisname.jpg

You’ve originated a lot of roles. This role was originated by Christian Borle. Is there a different kind of pressure taking on a role that someone else originated?
I find that there is less pressure, and I think that I prefer taking over a role originated by someone else. If I’m originated something, it’s a lot slower of a process. When you take over for someone, the hard work is done and you just have to slip into the costume, metaphorically speaking. I’ve found that I’m good at interpreting something that someone else originated and making it my own. I find it easier. I’m lazy quite frankly!

I thought you did a great job making it your own.
I wouldn’t know how to copy someone else’s performance; it would feel like stealing. And I love what Will and Christian did, but I wouldn’t know how to do it the way each of them did it because that was unique to them.

You have an accent for this role. Is that fun?
Yeah, I love it. I like to disappear as much as I can into a role. So the more makeup, the more accents, the better. That’s what makes it fun, to be as far removed from me personally as I can get.

How was it performing the day after the election results?
Coming back here, the day after the election, was a difficult experience, and the mood was reminiscent of coming here after 9/11. It was hard to come in that day, and the mood in the theater was grim.

The ultimate message of the show for me was about being true to yourself. What allows you to believe in yourself?
That’s a good question because I have a hard time believing in myself. Every job I get, I say “how am I here?!”. I feel like an imposter. I know that I’m good at it, but I have a hard time internalizing that I’m good at it. And I feel like, at any moment, someone is going to pull back the curtain and say “aha you suck!”. It’s really more of a question of this being what I know how to do. I’ve been successful for twenty years in theater so I’m going to continue to work in theater because it’s where I seem to have the most luck. And I feel incredibly lucky.

You have so many fans.
I grew up playing in rock bands. I will always be colored by the experience of, for many years, playing in empty bars and empty clubs, and what that feels like to pour out your creative soul and be ignored. So, to even acknowledge that I have fans, I feel like “wow there are actually people here.” It will forever be ingrained in my mind that I will walk out there and there will be a couple of people at the bar. So I’m incredibly humbled by my fans; it’s quite amazing and I’m forever thankful for them.

Do you have any kind of mantra that you live by?
Not really. I find that, if you have a mantra, you eventually break it. If you have a code of “this is how I live my life” you eventually break it. I’ve been sober for almost four years, and I definitely was somebody who said something and did another and I spent many years living like that. So now I just try to be good to my family and be honest and act in a way that I didn’t act when I was using. I guess you have a different perspective after you go thru that kind of thing. When you risk losing everything that matters to you, and you somehow come out of it without having lost it, for me, I just try to keep my head down and live my life the way I should live it. And not talk about it or preach to other people. Because no matter what anybody told me, I had to figure it out. And so, like I said, I want to walk the path that I think I need to walk, keep my head down and stay out of other people’s business. Look at the hypocrisy of this world – look at the president-elect – there’s no bigger hypocrite than that.

Hamilton is such a craze and it brings me back to Rent and the phenomena surrounding it, for different reasons than Hamilton, but similar in the sense of it being a movement.

There are such strong similarities. If anything, Hamilton is a bigger phenomenon because of social media and the internet. In 1995, social media didn’t exist. So our show basically was a word of mouth thing. Hamilton went nuclear much quicker because of social media. And yeah, I know some people in the show, and I’ve definitely watched them and was nostalgic about my experience. I was a little envious that they were able to have this type of experience without the incredibly heartbreaking loss that we endured, losing Jonathan Larson the opening night of our dress rehearsal off-Broadway. Our experience was, and always will be, colored by Jonathan dying right when this thing was taking off. I envy them not having this heaviness surrounding them, and being able to enjoy the experience without the sadness we had to deal with.

Something Rotten ends its Broadway runs January 1st. What’s next for you?
Me, Rob and Josh are going out on tour. We start immediately, on Jan 10th, and the following week we officially open in Boston.

See Adam Pascal in Something Rotten on Broadway, or on tour early next year. Get tickets here.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Adam Wolf and the Cook Brothers (A Tale of Drugs, Sex, and Rock & Roll)

Ever dreamed of joining a rock band, getting rich, getting famous, and seeing the world through a private jet plane’s window?Ladies and Gentleman: Adam Wolf and the Cook Brothers – A Tale of Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll is your personal invitation to tune in, turn on, and drop out as you ride the tour bus through the night and into the next town with Paul, Ronnie, Adam and Mark. Paul is old school rock ‘n’ roll but he knows a hit song when he hears one. When he gets a demo from a St. Louis metal band, he is not impressed until he hears a track unlike all the others. He may have to make a deal with the devil to find the kid for his last chance ticket to rock glory. Ronnie is a brutal, delusional alcoholic and prescription fiend. In spite of his amazing technical guitar style, he has no talent. He can never be an original like Adam. For vengeance, Ronnie will follow a dark path of violence and destruction to the bitter end. Adam is a musical prodigy. He simply hears music in his mind while the notes naturally come through his guitar. Young and utterly naïve, music will change his life but his regret is a wound that will never heal. Mark couldn’t play a piano if it had only one key, but he doesn’t need to. Unlike Ronnie and Adam, Mark is hoping he can find the balance between his brothers though a musical bridge connecting them all forever. Paul, Ronnie, Adam, and Mark all have one thing in common – they would rather die than give up on their rock ‘n’ roll dreams. Walking down this wicked, twisted road each man will realize one important thing – this music can save them all. Ladies and Gentlemen: Adam Wolf and the Cook Brothers – A Tale of Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll will leave your ears ringing long after you’ve read it for the first time!

Adam Lyons Wants You to Get “Ice Cold”

Adam Lyons is a little emotional. It’s now midnight in London and June has turned into July. He is sitting in his London flat and received the e-mail. His debut album is now available on iTunes. The 22 year-old tweets out another link to his followers, but this time he attaches a screen-shot of the standard e-mail iTunes sends, stating his order (the order of his album) is ready. His group of loyal fans, who have supported him for a few years now, are busy tweeting up a storm in-excitement. Adam is busy engaging with them as they all celebrate this milestone in his career.

The debut album is called Ice Cold. The 15-track album is a mixture of many genres including Pop, R&B, and Soul. The album showcases Lyons vocal ability and range. No song sounds the same. It also showcases his talent as a songwriter. Every single track was written solely by Lyons. The album was produced by Uplink from Germany. The duo and Lyons started working and collaborating on this album over a year ago.

“It is filled with emotion, passion, energy and commitment.” Lyons states on his album. “I can’t wait for people to have the album, it will be so fulfilling to share the body of work with the loyal supporters and hopefully attract new fans.” Lyons states.

The first single off the album is also called “Ice Cold.” “Summer is my favorite season.” Lyons exclaims. “When Uplink sent me the track to write and record, it instantly gave me a feel good, chilled Californian vibe. I just fell in love with the track.” he states.

2015-07-01-1435790865-4653260-11392788_1004029646282034_5019764956974594427_n.jpg
(Ice Cold Album Cover Art. Designed and Created by Servando Lupini)

A music video for the single was shot in Los Angeles this past May. Adam sought out Mac Cleary, the director of his first music video “Psycho” to helm this project. “Marc is a very unique individual with a very creative mind. I love how fresh and cool he is and I am in love with his work.” Lyons states.

Cleary also only has positive things to say about working with Adam. “Adam’s always such a team player.” Cleary states. “Whether it’s getting half naked and dunking in a bathtub in public in the freezing cold, or slow dancing with a drag queen on Hollywood Boulevard he’s always 100% fully committed and never questions anything.”

The music video itself was a little different than the previous ones Lyons has done (This was his third). “It was incredibly fun, we basically had a day out and made a video of it. It was very free spirited and stress free. What makes this video unique is our relaxed approach to the shoot and the awesome people involved. My cheeks were hurting from laughing throughout the day. It was a very long day and by the time we wrapped, I was ready for bed, however we had to fit in a few drinks in Hollywood first.” He says with a laugh. The music video was officially released onVevo on June 16th.

While music is his passion, his other passion is dance. Lyons is currently one of Rita Ora’s dancers during her 2015 UK festival tour. Stops already included the Radio 1 Big Weekend, Capital FM Summertime Ball and Wireless Festival. This past winter he performed The Royal Albert Hall with Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton and Erin as one of the six world class ensemble dancers for their Christmas Show followed by the UK/Ireland Tour of ‘That’s Entertainment’. He has taught and performed all over the UK and beyond.

In the last two years, I have written about Adam Lyons numerous times. As someone who is not in his field of work, it has been interesting watching from the sidelines as he navigates the interesting, exciting, and sometimes chaotic entertainment world. His journey has not been easy and it is not over yet. However if anything this has helped to shape Lyons into the true artist that he is today. Lyons drive and determination for success in whatever he does is apparent and can even be felt from across the pond. Even though it has been a few years, it still surprises me the amount of time and energy he puts in every one of his projects. I see his career continuing to progress as time goes on. I can’t guess where it will end up, but what I can say is Adam Lyons will give everything he has on his way there.

Adam Lyon’s debut album Ice Cold is available on iTunes as well as other music streaming services and stores. To view the video for the single “Ice Cold” you can view it here. For more about Adam Lyons, visit his official website.

Archer Creator Adam Reed Imparts Professional Wisdom, Notes New Series Cassius & Clay

Writer-creator Adam Reed is a busy guy with a hit animated series (Archer) and another one on the way (Cassius & Clay) — plus he’s flying up to Canada this week for the Banff World Media Festival — so we jump right into it.

2015-06-02-1433281197-7106987-AdamReed1.jpg

Adam Reed: The Official Headshot

I see that you’ll be hosting a master class at Banff — what can you tease about that, without being too spoiler-y?

I don’t know, actually. I’m mortified that it’s called that! [laughs] Well, not that it’s called that, but that they would, you know, have me teaching or doing something called a ‘master class.’ I’m quite nervous! I can tease that!

Okay, well at least everyone will know what sort of tenor the meeting will have.

Yeah: awkward and stammering!

Great! Everyone’ll know what to expect.

Yeah, but they’re probably mostly Canadians, so they’re going to be really polite about it.

Yeah, they’ll kind of look the other way. Obviously you’re going to be talking about the development of Archer, to some extent — probably to a great extent.

I would think so.

2015-06-02-1433281285-9073235-AdamReed2.jpg

Can we go back to the beginning of that? Because I’m not totally sure what the genesis was, where you said, ‘Okay, I want to do this kind of crazy spy-adventure thing, with this sort of anachronistic time line, and all the rest.’ What germinated to make that happen?

My partner Matt Thompson and I had a cartoon on Adult Swim called Frisky Dingo, and it had been sort of ‘canceled by mutual agreement,’ I guess. Although I say it was ‘mutual,’ they might’ve just said that to make us feel better. But after that show was canceled, I took a year off and traveled: I walked across Spain, and I was in North Africa — and I was sort of bedraggled-looking most of the time. But I was sitting in really nice cafés in Europe, and just filling up notebooks with show ideas. I kept coming back to thinking about James Bond, and all the cool places in Europe he went, and all the fancy parties that he went to — that I wouldn’t be invited to, because I had a backpack and a scraggly beard. So I just started thinking more and more about James Bond.

Years ago, somebody gave me a set of all the James Bond paperbacks, like, from the ’50s. And I read a couple of them, and in the books James Bond is really quite a bastard. And also a rapist. So I was trying to think how to make a secret agent as big a bastard as possible, that you would still like and root for. And obviously not have him be a rapist like James Bond. From that sprang Archer.

2015-06-02-1433281425-4203816-AdamReed3.jpg

James Bond lost the funny — so Archer picked it up!

Okay. Well, continuing that tangent just briefly, do you have a favorite Ian Fleming book, or a favorite James Bond in the movies?

In the movies, I’m a Connery man, although I really like the Daniel Craig reboot. I’m less of a fan of the sort of tongue-in-cheek Roger Moore era — although I think the new ones could stand to have just a slightly lighter tone sometimes. They can be pretty grim, recently. But I think Craig’s a fantastic Bond.

Yeah, like when the train goes kerblooey, and Bond readjusts his cuff-links, I was like, ‘Okay, now you’re back on the right track.’

Yeah, exactly. Exactly. I like those little touches.

Do you consciously bring any of that — or James Coburn’s ‘Flint’ movies — or that era into your discussions, when you’re creating the episodes?

Not so much anymore, but certainly early on. Flint was a big influence, as was Matt Helm, and OSS 117 — everything, basically. We put it all in a pot, and stole all of our favorite things from a lot of different sources.

Do you ever have to modify stuff, so it’s more comprehensible in the modern day? Or do you just go with it being amusingly anachronistic?

It’s sort of whatever serves us best, and we’re — I think — unfair, and break several rules about it. But when it serves the comedy to have it be more ’60s- or ’70s-based technology, or whatever, we use that. But when it serves us to have the Internet or cell phones, we use that. Cell phones make it much easier than having people have to go to a phone booth. Text messaging is a really economical way to forward the story, and not wait for the mail to get delivered.

2015-06-02-1433281522-5340838-AdamReed4.jpg

Even in animation, they remove the rear-view mirror.

Right. Well, going back to the origins of your animation work, apparently you and your partner were doing ‘odd jobs.’ Like, what kind of ‘odd jobs’ do you do, when you’re getting ready to create series?

Odd jobs? I’m not sure what —

Like at Cartoon Network. In part of your bio, I’m just wondering: What are the ‘odd jobs’ at Cartoon Network? That’s kind of a cool thing.

Oh, at Cartoon Network! We were in charge of the tape library, and then we started doing interstitial programming for little kids, like ages two to five — that were little hand puppets with googly eyes. We did that for a couple of years. We did a live-action morning show with Carrot Top for a year. It was a real mixed bag.

Are there certain protocols for working with Carrot Top?

[Adam laughs heartily.]

There — uh — yeah — although I don’t know if ‘protocols’ is the right word. It was (Adam gives this considerable thought) an interesting experience — I’ll put it that way. He’s an extremely nice guy, but the production was a bit of a mess.

I see you’ve got Cassius & Clay in development, and that’s a brand new headline. What can you say about it?

It’s sort of a Butch and Sundance meets Mad Max meets Thelma ane Louise meets Lucy and Ethel [laughs]. It’s set in the post-apocalyptic mountains of North Carolina, where cannibals are roaming the countryside in souped-up diesel vehicles — and the non-cannibal people —

(We call ourselves ‘vegetarians,’ I want to interject. But I don’t.)

— have retreated to the walled cities of former NASCAR racetracks, and these two women — Cassius and Clay — make their living as scavengers slash bandits slash gamblers slash screw-ups. We’re working on the pilot right now, we have an amazing cast, and we’re very excited about it. Megan Ganz [Community, Modern Family] — an extremely talented writer — wrote the pilot with me. We’re seeing good things.

Cool. Does it present challenges that you haven’t met before? Or are there some things that you’ve learned along the way that are going to make this production easier?

Hopefully we will learn from our — [laughs] — our catalogue of mistakes, and learning bumps along the way. There are always ways to improve the production, but that’s on the technical side — and I don’t understand how our animators do what they do — I just know they make it look beautiful. And on the writing side, that end of things, basically we write as funny a script as we can, and use that as — I think Harold Ramis said the script is always the worst case scenario. And then turn it over to our wonderful voice cast [which includes Kaitlin Olson, Susan Sarandon, and J.B. Smoove], and let them make it much better.

2015-06-02-1433281701-4327139-AdamReed5.jpg

Caption contest?

Okay, this master class thing, I’m a little stuck on this. What if you get the question: ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’ (I’m not sure whether or not Adam infers that I left that preposition dangling ironically — but hey, young journalists: Take risks!)

Sometimes it’s the news, sometimes it’s old movies, sometimes it’s an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man. Sometimes they just come while you’re tinkering on a motorcycle, or falling asleep — they actually come quite often, falling asleep. And I keep meaning to have a note pad on the bedside table, but I always forget. So there could be some real gems that I’ve just forgotten to write down.

(I praise the current state of recording gadgetry — come on, man! you make a spy show! — and Adam concurs.)

2015-06-02-1433281776-5321962-BANFFlogo.jpg

Adam will be there to answer your questions!

Okay, and the other question that always gets asked at panels: ‘What advice do you have for young creative people who are just starting out?’

You know, I would say: Make whatever your idea is. Go ahead and do it as cheaply as possible. And put it on YouTube — it has really changed the game. They used to say you have to move to Los Angeles, and get a Los Angeles phone number and an agent, and blah-blah-blah. But I really think those days are behind us, and now there are people at networks whose whole job is just to scour YouTube for up and coming talent. And we’ve had animators leave us to go on to bigger and better things because they did a short animated piece, and put it on YouTube, and ended up with millions of hits — and then the next thing you know, the agents are beating down their door. It’s amazing: more people than those watching Archer will watch, whatever, a cat falling down the stairs.

(I cite our society’s collapse into the intellectual cold war of LOLCats. Then I am strangely inspired to ask Mr. Reed his feelings on the contrast between YouTube and Vimeo — which not unreasonably inspires a puzzled chuckle, so we wrap up.)

Since you know so much about feature films, do you want to expand into that area at some point?

I would love to! The trick is to get somebody to let me do that. Or to trick some studio into paying me to write a movie for them.

Solidarity, brother.

[.]sudden parting of the grass before the swift rush of the tawny one, his leap to the bull’s back, the crashing and the bellowing, and the crunch crunch of bones; or again, the cool quiet of the water-hole, the wild horse up to his knees and drinking softly, and then the tawny one?always the tawny one! the leap, the screaming and the splashing of the horse, and the crunch crunch of bones; and yet again, the sombre twilight and the sad silence of the end of day, and then the great full-throated roar, sudden, like a trump of doom, and swift upon it the insane shrieking and chattering among the trees, and I, too, am trembling with fear and am one of the many shrieking and chattering among the trees. At the sight of him, helpless, within the bars of his cage, I became enraged. I gritted my teeth at him, danced up and down, screaming an incoherent mockery and making antic faces. He responded, rushing against the bars and roaring back at me his impotent wrath. Ah, he knew me, too, and the sounds I made were the sounds of old time and intelligible to him. My parents were frightened. “The child is ill,” said my mother. “He is hysterical,” said my father. I never told them, and they never knew. Already had I developed reticence concerning this quality of mine, this semi-disassociation of personality as I think I am justified in calling it.[.]”.

What Adam Pally Can Say About The ‘Happy Endings’ Countdown Clock

Last month, the long-dormant Twitter account run by the writers of “Happy Endings” shared a cryptic link that sent fans to a page featuring a countdown clock. “It’s almost a new day,” reads the site, with time ticking down to April 1, aka April Fools’ Day.

But despite the fact that the clock could be an elaborate ruse, fans of the canceled series were tantalized by the possibility of a renaissance. “The thought that ‘Happy Endings’ might actually be resurrected is probably the most ah-mah-zing thing I’ve heard in a long time,” wrote Natalie Abrams at Entertainment Weekly. “I need to know what this means. I’m, like, stress-vomiting with anticipation,” tweeted TVLine staff editor Andy Swift.

In the weeks since the @happywrites account posted the link, many have speculated that some kind of second life for the show could materialize. (After the tweet, the account also followed streaming services Netflix, Amazon and Yahoo Screen.)

Former “Happy Endings” stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Adam Pally left their respective regular roles on “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project,” while Eliza Coupe’s show “Benched” was canceled. And while other “Happy Endings” cast members Casey Wilson, Zachary Knighton and Elisha Cuthbert are currently involved in different series, none of those shows have been picked up for future seasons. What does it all mean?

“I can’t tell you anything,” Pally told The Huffington Post during an interview at South by Southwest to promote his new film, “Night Owls,” which debuted at the festival on Friday. “I know as much as you.”

But after Pally was pressed to provide some concrete information by his “Night Owls” co-star, Rosa Salazar, he did offer one tidbit.

“I’ll tell you this: I know the origin of that ‘Happy Endings’ countdown clock was not intended to be where it is headed,” he said. “That’s as much as I can give you.”

Check back on Monday for more from Pally and Salazar on “Night Owls.” This year’s South by Southwest Film Festival runs until March 21.

Sundance So Far: Adam Scott & Jason Schwartzman’s Fake Penises, Ethan Hawke’s Latest Dad & ‘The Witch’

Last time on Sundance So Far, we discussed “The Bronze” and other movies that opened the festival. Temperatures dropped to 18 degrees at sundown in Park City, Utah, on Day 2 of Sundance. Parkas were out and crowds were thick at some of the most anticipated films of the opening weekend. The press screening for “Z for Zachariah,” filled up two hours before the film began, and Jason Segel stunned audiences as David Foster Wallace at the world premiere of “The End of the Tour.” We’ll write about both of those films shortly, but here are the other titles HuffPost Entertainment editor Matthew Jacobs and Los Angeles senior editor Sasha Bronner caught on Friday:

“Stockholm, Pennsylvania”
Written and directed by Nikole Beckwith
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Jason Isaacs and Cynthia Nixon

stockholm

There is more than initially meets the eye in the post-kidnapping drama about a young woman, played by Saoirse Ronan (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), who is returned to her home after being held captive in a basement for the majority of her life.

Taken from a park when she was 4 years old raised by her kidnapper (played by Jason Isaacs), the extent of what her character knows about the world can be held in the palm of her hand.

The film’s intentional use of claustrophobia does the trick. When Ronan sticks her head out of her bedroom window and, we presume, feels rain for the first time, you too feel her wonder and her innocence.

But this is not an innocent film. Cynthia Nixon, who plays Ronan’s mother, is understandably emotional when her daughter returns home and does her very best to help the family acclimate to their suddenly different circumstances (think “trust falls”). But the people of the town stare. And they discover that their missing daughter doesn’t know when her real birthday is, doesn’t remember them at all and actually thinks that her name is Leia — “named after a Princess,” she tells her parents on her first afternoon home.

The psychological phenomenon Stockholm syndrome describes the common scenario of a captive feeling protective, loving and sympathetic to their captor. Ronan’s character visits the man who took her only once in jail and after telling him that she doesn’t know how to do anything in the real world, she also says she doesn’t know what the worst thing is that’s happened to her — spending her life with him, or spending the rest of it without him.

When she asks if he regrets it, he answers that it takes the same amount of effort to run in place or to run a mile, and he would rather see the mile.

A startling twist (which, of course, we will not ruin for you) turns everything inside out. Filmmaker Nikole Beckwith presents a quiet and powerful debut feature that succeeds in redefining what captivity means as well as tilting the kaleidoscope of identity and love ninety degrees on its side.

Stay tuned: Saoirse Ronan gets more screen time at the festival — she also stars in the 1950s drama “Brooklyn,” written by Nick Hornby, as an Irish-American immigrant attempting to choose between love and her place in the world. — SB

“The Overnight”
Written and directed by Patrick Brice
Starring Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche

overnight

Two delights of Friday’s Sundance came in Patrick Brice’s very funny “The Overnight.” First, Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling, playing a couple looking for friends after moving to Los Angeles, smoke weed with another couple (Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche) who invite them over for what appears to be an innocent playdate for their children. They are a riot as bumbling stoners who conjure up a candidness foreign to their lives as young parents during what turns out to be a quite propulsive gathering. Later, Scott and Schwartzman prance around naked for a solid chunk of the film, for reasons I’d rather you discover on your own. Just know that both actors wear prosthetics, and the size of the genitals on display is an uproarious part of the plot.

“The Overnight” is just bawdy enough to be something of a sex comedy, but it’s nothing if not a tactful tale of a rowdy, confused couple befriending the innocent newcomers from their neighborhood park. The playdate — billed as a simple pizza night at their palatial home — turns into an all-night affair with increasingly bizarre results. There’s a slight dip in the film’s energy toward the end as the dramatic underpinnings of the foursome’s lives unfold, but it doesn’t take away from the sharp performances and clever writing this film boasts. Now where should we mail our smoke-out invitation for Scott and Schilling? — MJ

*****

“The Witch”
Written and directed by Robert Eggers
Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Dickie, Ralph Ineson, Harvey Scrimshaw, Lucas Dawson and Ellie Grainger

the witch

Today’s horror landscape is bleak. The reliance on gratuitous violence and uninventive scare tactics is more of a nightmare than any of the stories being depicted onscreen. Yet every year a few movies break through the gore to channel the worldly panic that horror is meant to showcase. This year, one of those is “The Witch,” a movie that became one of Day 2’s buzziest Sundance titles. (To wit: A24 is nearing a deal to distribute “The Witch.”)

Set in 1630 New England, “The Witch” is a stylish chiller about a devoutly Christian family whose infant vanishes. Their crops fail and they begin accusing one another of occultism — all while a witch creeps through the depths of the woods that surround their home. The movie seems talky at first, but let these irascible colonials work through their muddy family dynamics, from the mother’s grief-stricken instability to the father’s sympathy for her daughter after his wife accuses her of witchcraft. This is eerie filmmaking at its finest, which is all the more remarkable considering Robert Eggers is a first-time director. By the time their paranoia reaches peak levels, this family of six can barely stomach the sight of one another, so wracked with the panic that haunts their countenance. As if Mark Korven’s strings-heavy score weren’t enough eerie enough, know that the film is pieced together using actual journals (including specific conversations) that chronicled the witchcraft that took place in the 17th century. — MJ

“Ten Thousand Saints”
Written and drected by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini
Starring Ethan Hawke, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch and Emily Mortimer

ten thousand

Who doesn’t want to see Ethan Hawke as a burner, weed-selling, dysfunctional father with a heart of gold? Apparently no one, because the premiere of his new film “Ten Thousand Saints” was sold out Friday evening at the Sundance Film Festival. Hawke stars alongside Emily Mortimer, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch and
Asa Butterfield, and is the center of an off-kilter family dealing with an actual tragedy and also the general tragedy of growing up.

Set in the 1980s, first in Vermont and then in the East Village in New York City, the film is dripping with teen angst, drugs and rock and roll. Actually, teen angst, weed, cocaine, mushrooms, plenty of huffing and punk rock, to be exact. There are Hare Krishnas, tattoos, protests in New York City and a genre of the hardcore punk scene called “straight edge” where abstinence and sobriety are encouraged.

The teen stars of the film are its strength, carrying their angst like a heavy duffle bag thrown in the corner of every room they enter. But there is a lot packed into the story and there may just be too many protagonists involved for many viewers’ tastes. We probably aren’t supposed to, but in some ways end up rooting the most for Hawke in all his flawed attempts at being a decent father.

Filmmaking duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini work as a team writing, directing and editing and are best known for “American Splendor” (2003), “The Nanny Diaries” (2007) and “Cinema Verite” (2011). The two were nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for their writing of “American Splendor.”

The writing in “Ten Thousand Saints” gives Hawke room to make audiences laugh with his idea of good parenting and one of the most awkward father-son talks we have seen. In a surprisingly poignant moment, he reveals to his son (played by Butterfield) one of his observations about the world and about family: “Women make their decisions and men are just trying not to be men. The whole system needs looking over.”

Young Millenials will flock to the film if they are looking for an indie, hipster coming of age story with plenty of bad decisions and always, of course, the promise of love. — SB

Adam Sandler To Make 4 New Movies For Netflix

Netflix has taken another huge step into originally content, signing comic/actor Adam Sandler to a four-movie deal that could see the first release as early as next year.

““People love Adam’’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement released online. “His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world.”

Sandler joked on Twitter and Instagram that he was trying to sign up for Netflix, and signed the four-picture deal instead:

““When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said ‘yes’ for one reason and one reason only…,” Sandler said in a statement released by the company. “Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. Let the streaming begin!!!!””

Variety reports that Sandler’s Happy Madison productions will develop the films with Netflix, and that the first could start streaming in 2015.

Earlier this week, Netflix announced its first original film, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend.” That movie is set for release on both Netflix and in select IMAX theaters on Aug. 28, 2015.

Counting Crows Frontman Adam Duritz Explains Why No One Can Find Him On Tinder

Single ladies, take note: Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz is on the market, and he’s on Tinder.

You can follow in the footsteps of former Duritz love interests such as Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Emmy Rossum by simply downloading the dating app, which the musician recently joined. After tweeting a screenshot of his profile, he explained to HuffPost Live why he isn’t ashamed to use the popular dating service.

“Everybody is on Tinder,” he told host Ricky Camilleri. “My married friends are on Tinder. Seriously, there is nobody who is not on Tinder at this point. It’s a video game. My married publicist who told me not to go on Tinder is on Tinder, and so is her husband.”

Duritz is surprised that people even came across his profile to begin with.

“I don’t think most people would even have me on their [age] range. Most people my age aren’t on [Tinder],” the 50-year-old said. “They don’t even know how to use a phone.”

The singer seemed less surprised, however, at the fact that he was still single.

“You muddle through and you crash into a wall,” he said, referring to the relationship trajectory he finds himself frequently succumbing to. “I blame myself because it’s my fault. … I’m crazy, and I write a lot of songs about that particular wall. I don’t know why more people haven’t picked up on it.”

‘Girls’ Star Adam Driver Could Play Nightwing In ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

Maybe Ray can play The Flash. As reported by TheWrap on late Friday night, “Girls” star Adam Driver is among three actors in contention to star as Dick Grayson a.k.a. Nightwing a.k.a. Batman’s sidekick in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” sequel, “Batman Vs. Superman.” The trade publication was not privy to the other two names.

That Grayson will be part of Snyder’s 2015 film was first reported by Latino Review on Wednesday. The site noted that “Batman Vs. Superman” producers were looking for “a young John Hawkes-type” to play the role, which will find Grayson and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) estranged as the film starts. (Grayson, of course, was first known by Robin in the Batman comics.)

Whether Driver, who plays Adam on the HBO series “Girls” and was a recent Emmy nominee, snags the role is unclear, but his career is definitely on the upswing.

“I’m definitely trying to figure this all out as I go along, how to craft a career,” Driver told The New York Times in a recent interview. “As things get bigger, I have days of depression, sitting in the house and wondering ‘What are you doing? Is it even relevant?’ […] I’m not against Hollywood at all. I just want to be involved with good writing and work that has some kind of meaning.”

“Batman Vs. Superman” is due out in theaters on July 17, 2015. For more on Driver and the rumor, head to TheWrap.

Young Singles, Seth Adam Smith’s Marriage Advice Isn’t for You

Dear nieces and nephews (biological and metaphorical),

There’s a marriage advice post spreading across the Internet like low-fat mayo over Wonder Bread. It’s called “Marriage Isn’t for You,” and it’s full of sweet-sounding ideas handed out by Seth Adam Smith, a guy who resembles the male half of the the straight couple that tops every wedding cake. In addition to being handsome, Smith has an inspiring and sad story, so we find ourselves nodding and sharing before we realize what he’s really saying.

You’ll probably run across his post at some point, and it will probably make an impression, since you are “at that age” and some of you are dating, but I want you to take a closer look and really give some thought to the ideas he feels entitled to share as gospel after a year and a half of marriage.

Marry your best friend: Good advice if you can swing it, and advice that I’d love to see you follow. Of course, my best friend and I are both male. In fact, many people find that their best friend shares their gender. Alas, in 36 states marriage is indeed not for us, often thanks to the intervention of Smith’s church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But that probably doesn’t bother Smith, since he thinks that…

Marriage is for your future children: Your great-uncles are too old to have kids, but some of them have recently married. You have cousins who can’t have children, but they got married. One day my partner and I will get married. Do our marriages still count if they’re not about children? They certainly do. You can have a wonderful marriage without having babies. So if you do decide to have children, let it be your choice. Don’t let family or friends or anyone tell you that your marriage is less than theirs if it doesn’t produce babies.

Marriage is for the other person’s happiness: If you love someone, you want them to be happy. And it’s very nice to think that you can make another person happy, but it’s also very arrogant. What really makes a person happy? Lots of things: family, friends, hobbies, work, and more. It will be your job to add to their lives and help them be even happier. The way to do that is to be happy yourself, with hobbies, friends, and work of your own. And when those things aren’t going so well in your lives, you can each help the other through the bad times. Together, two happy people can create an even happier couple, but if you make someone else’s happiness your mission in life, you give them the power to make your life a failure. Which brings me to the last point he makes:

A woman’s selfless love cures everything (but a man’s love can come and go): Smith went through a time when he was being very selfish, and his wife forgave him. That’s great for him, but I want you, especially my nieces, to know that you are under no obligation to be the saint in your relationship. If a relationship depends completely on one partner doing all of the forgiving, all of the loving, all of the sacrificing, then it is not a fair relationship, and you deserve a fair relationship. Don’t let anyone tell you that real men misbehave and real women forgive. Find someone who is prepared to be just as loving and devoted as you are.

See, “marriage is for others” is exactly what women have been told for centuries, and it’s done a lot of harm. “Marriage is for the family” kept women ashamed of their marriage problems and too scared to divorce their husbands. “Marriage is for children” has kept multitudes of women locked in abusive marriages “until the kids are grown.”

Cody and I have been together for almost 20 years now, without state sanction, families pushing us together, or children at our feet. Maybe we’ve managed this long because we didn’t have the “benefit” of very much family advice, so we remain reluctant to give much advice ourselves.

But you know what? Since we were never allowed to be the idealized couple atop the wedding cake, we’ve had to find our own way, and we’ve learned an awful lot. We have advice for what to do when marriage isn’t an option, when kids aren’t in the future, when bromides about selflessness give way to realities about careers, priorities, health, and aging. I may not always put that advice on the Internet, but it will always be here for you. And even if we’re not the first people you think of, I hope you come to us before you put much stock in some of the popular advice floating around out there.

Love,
Uncle Wayne
