Ben Affleck Completes 30 Days in Rehab: He ‘Is Really Trying Very Hard to Get Better’

Ben Affleck “is doing much better” after completing 30 days of rehab and will likely stay for a while longer, a source tells PEOPLE.

The actor, 46, was seen at the Malibu treatment facility he’s been staying at on Sunday — one month after his ex Jennifer Garner was photographed driving him to the rehab center.

“He is doing much better but needs to continue receiving care,” a source tells PEOPLE. “As difficult as it was to have his recent trip to rehab all play out so publicly, it now seems the way it happened was for the best.”

Affleck previously entered rehab in 2001 and, years later, announced he had completed treatment for alcohol addiction in March 2017.

“Ben seems to take this rehab visit more seriously,” the insider says. “This time is different. He doesn’t want his kids to have to go through this again. Ben is really trying very hard to get better. He is taking things day by day, but it seems he plans on staying at the treatment center for at least a couple of more weeks.”

Affleck shares three children — Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and Samuel, 6 — with Garner, 46.

Another source says, “This continues to be a very public battle on a private matter and he struggles with that.” “He is encouraged by all the support and wants people to take away that you can ask for help,” the source adds. “And that it is out there.”

The actor entered rehab on Aug. 22 seeking treatment for alcohol addiction, PEOPLE previously confirmed, with a source close to the actor saying “he knew he needed help and was vocal about it.

Since then, the father of three has been photographed arriving at his Los Angeles home for scheduled basketball workouts with a coach while he continued staying at his rehab center. The second source says the workouts at home are sanctioned by the rehab facility.

“He recently put in a gym at his home and is most comfortable there,” added the first source of Affleck’s trips home. “Ben continues to work hard on himself and is committed to his rehab program, which includes a daily routine of multiple meetings and indoor and outdoor exercise.”

The actor “has a specialized program to suit his needs — meetings, working out, reading, therapy. Everyone’s journey with addiction and treatment is different and built for the individual. is a good mix of mental and physical work. This is what was outlined by his doctors and team,” the insider continued.

Affleck’s rumored new flame Shauna Sexton, 22, has been photographed driving his car and visiting his home.

His brother, Casey Affleck, gave an update on the Gone Girl actor’s health to Entertainment Tonight in early September.

He’s doing great,” Casey said. “He’s in rehab and he’s recovering and seems to be doing well.”

Ben Affleck Shuts Down Rumors That He’s Leaving Batman During Superhero-sized Comic-Con Stop

The Batman has returned. To San Diego Comic-Con that is.

Ben Affleck, the film franchise’s current Caped Crusader, surprised 6,000 enthusiastic fans at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday with his fellow Justice League cast members, who made a dramatic entrance by walking through the crowd during Warner Bros’ star-studded panel in the convention center’s storied Hall H.

The Batman v Superman star, dressed casually in a t-shirt, jeans and a blue bomber jacket, was joined by Justice League costars: Wonder Woman Gal Gadot, Superman Henry Cavill, The Flash Ezra Miller, Aquaman Jason Momoa and Cyborg Ray Fisher.

Throughout the event, Affleck looked happy and relaxed — laughing off rumors that he was being “phased out” as the Caped Crusader and even dropping a few f-bombs.

“Batman is the coolest f—ing part in any universe, DC, Marvel,” Affleck said when he came onstage. “I’m so thrilled to do it.”

He went on to name the Warner Bros. executives who told him that they wanted him to stay on as Batman, adding, “I believe them.” He later added that he thought the rumors got started because he is no longer directing the upcoming Batman solo movie.

The group also introduced a new sneak peek of Justice League.

Ahead of the panel, Gadot shared a smiling selfie with Affleck, Miller and Fisher, in front of what appeared to be a private plane.

“Ready or not here we come,” she wrote.

This first Justice League film sees DC’s most iconic superheroes joining forces to save the world from an enigmatic threat. Affleck and Cavill return as Batman and the Man of Steel, Gadot makes her third appearance as Wonder Woman, while Miller’s The Flash and Momoa’s Aquaman are fully introduced as part of the League ahead of their solo films arriving in 2018. Joss Whedon took over directing duties from Zack Snyder following a family tragedy — his 20-year-old daughter Autumn’s suicide.

Manchester By the Sea Director Defends Casey Affleck After Student Journalist Slams the Actor

The Oscar-winning writer/director of Manchester By the Sea is slamming a student journalist from his alma mater for writing an opinion piece highlighting the sexual harassment allegations against the film’s star, Casey Affleck.

Kenneth Lonergan condemned the article in a letter to the editor of The Wesleyan Argus, in which he accused the sophomore journalism student of writing a “tangle of illogic, misinformation, and flat-out slander” against Affleck, who recently won an Oscar for his performance in the film.

Last week, in a piece titled “How Wesleyan Is Complicit in Affleck’s Sexual Misconducted by Endorsing Lonergan ’84,” assistant opinion editor Connor Aberle criticized the college for its “praise” of Lonergan, and called Affleck’s Best Actor win “severely problematic.”

“Wesleyan University cannot insist on claiming credit for Kenneth Lonergan unless they also acknowledge their complicity in the success of a perpetrator of sexual violence,” Aberle wrote. “Lonergan essentially won Affleck his Oscar by handpicking Affleck for his movie.”

Aberle’s comments refer to the two sexual-harassment lawsuits that were filed against Affleck in 2010 by two women who worked with him on the film I’m Still Here. Affleck has denied the allegations, and settled the suits out of court for undisclosed amounts. In the settlement, the actor did not admit any guilt, and he and his accusers are barred from discussing details of the case.

Lonergan responded to Aberle’s article with an opinion piece of his own, titled, “How Connor Aberle and The Argus are Complicit in Slandering Casey Affleck.” The director slammed Aberle’s writing as slander, writing, “Only the author’s presumed youth can possibly excuse his deeply offensive display of ignorance, and warped PC-fueled sense of indignation.”

RELATED: Casey Affleck Responds to Criticism Following Controversial Oscar Win

He added, “He writes as if Casey Affleck were actually guilty of a crime. In fact, it was alleged 7 years ago, in a civil lawsuit for breach of contract, that Casey sexually harassed two women formerly in his employ. Casey denounced the allegations as being totally fabricated. Like most civil suits, this one was settled out of court by mutual consent on undisclosed terms … In other words nothing was proved or disproved. So how does Mr Aberle dare to write as if he knows who was telling the truth and who was not?”

After Affleck won the Oscar, many took to social media to criticize the decision. In a recent interview with the Boston Globe, Affleck — the younger brother of Ben Affleck — addressed the criticism, saying, “There’s really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”

Affleck told the Globe that he is not permitted to speak about the now-settled lawsuits, and said that the people condemning him on social media don’t know the facts of the situation. “I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent,” he added. “Everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else.”

Ben Affleck Hated ‘Daredevil’ So Much, He Decided To Be Batman

Turns out it was all about righting his wrongs.

Ben Affleck sat down for an interview with the New York Times for their TimesTalks series at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on Monday and discussed taking on the role of Batman in “Batman v. Superman,” partly because “Daredevil” still haunted him.

“That’s the movie I want to do. I want to be a part of that,” he said of Zack Snyder’s latest superhero flick. “Part of it was I wanted for once to get one of these movies and do it right – to do a good version. I hate ‘Daredevil’ so much.”

He is a fan of Netflix’s version, however.

“It frustrated me. The Netflix show does really cool stuff. I feel like that was there for us to do with that character, and we never kind of got it right. I wanted to do one of those movies and sort of get it right.”

Good thing he decided to give superheros another shot, since “Batman v. Superman” was No. 7 in the year’s top-grossing movies with $ 330 million. And his 4-year-old son, Samuel, was happy about it, too.

“I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to be Batman’, and he was like, ‘Dad, you have to be Batman.’ He’s right. If you can be Batman, you have to be Batman,” Affleck said. “He still thinks I really am Batman. He thinks I’m in my Batcave right now. Eventually, he will understand, and it will be a steep therapist’s bill, but I’ll take it.”

PBS’ ‘Finding Your Roots’ Returns After Ben Affleck Controversy

NEW YORK (AP) — PBS’ popular “Finding Your Roots” series, temporarily shelved after an episode omitted references to the slaveholding past of Ben Affleck’s ancestor at the actor’s request, will return to public television for its third season in January.

The show has hired a new fact-checker and two new genealogists as part of its reforms, said the network’s Beth Hoppe on Monday. PBS had suspended the series after determining that the show’s producers violated standards by allowing Affleck undue influence on its content and failing to inform the network of his request.

“It has become a more transparent process and a more rigorous process,” Hoppe said, “but essentially at its core these are personal stories about people who are finding out about their histories. That hasn’t changed.”

“Finding Your Roots,” which is hosted and written by Henry Louis Gates Jr., returns on Jan. 5. Julianne Moore, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Sen. John McCain and television producers Norman Lear and Shonda Rhimes are among the 28 new celebrities whose backgrounds are traced.

Given the sensitivity of the Affleck case, the series makes certain to mention if its experts find slaveholding backgrounds for any of the celebrities featured this season, even if that isn’t a central part of the story being told, Hoppe said. That’s the case with several people in the new season, but PBS would not reveal which ones.

Hoppe said Gates has done everything PBS has asked to ensure the show has no further problems.

Ben Affleck Controversy Prompts PBS To Postpone ‘Finding Your Roots’

By Brian Steinberg

LOS ANGELES ( – PBS will postpone new seasons of its documentary series “Finding Your Roots” after determining actor Ben Affleck was able to convince the series’ producers to omit a reference in an episode that aired in October of 2014 to the fact that he has slave-owning ancestors.

PBS said Wednesday that it, along with New York station WNET, “determined that the series co-producers violated PBS standards by failing to shield the creative and editorial process from improper influence, and by failing to inform PBS or WNET of Mr. Affleck’s efforts to affect program content. WNET had produced the first two seasons of the series, while WETA, based in Washington, D.C., has taken over production of the third season.

The actor’s request – and its influence on the production of the series – came to light in April, as media outlets reported on private email exchanges between Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the Harvard professor who is an executive producer on the series, and Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton in which Gates sought Lynton’s counsel over requests by Affleck to remove a bit from the episode that made mentioned the fact that slave ownership was part of his family history.

“I didn’t want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed,” Affleck said in a Facebook post made in April. “The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth.”

PBS said it had decided to delay the third season of the series until its producers could hire an additional fact-checker and an independent genealogist. PBS also said it would not commit to a fourth season of the series “until we are satisfied that the editorial standards of the series have been successfully raised to a level in which we can have confidence.” The episode in which Affleck’s ancestry is examined will be withdrawn from all forms of distribution, PBS said, including digital streaming and home video.

The review was led by Beth Hoppe and Stephen Segaller, the executives who oversee primetime programming for PBS and WNET, respectively. To investigate the lapse, PBS and WNET said executives examined correspondence, production records, agreements, talent releases and other documentation regarding the episode, as well as publicly available material. Representatives also interviewed the co-producers, who, PBS said, “fully cooperated in this review.” The law firm of Covington and Burling, LLP assisted in the process.

Gates previously said he had decided to focus on the most intriguing parts of Affleck’s background. “In the case of Mr. Affleck — we focused on what we felt were the most interesting aspects of his ancestry–including a Revolutionary War ancestor, a 3rd great-grandfather who was an occult enthusiast, and his mother who marched for Civil Rights during the Freedom Summer of 1964,” he said in an explanation provided to PBS ombudsman Michael Getler in April.

“Editorial integrity is essential to PBS. As a mission-driven media enterprise, we know that earning and keeping the trust of the American public are our most important priorities,” said Hoppe, who is PBS’ chief programming executive and general manager of general audience programming, in a prepared statement. “The co-producers of ‘Finding Your Roots’ have a strong track record of creating high-quality programming for PBS over many years. Improved editorial and production processes will ensure that all future projects will adhere to PBS’ editorial guidelines.”

Ben Affleck Jokes ‘Gone Girl’ Full-Frontal Happened On Cold Set

When accepting an award for your latest film, what better way to use the opportunity than to bring up your now-legendary full-frontal scene?

Ron Howard presented the top prize at the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday night, honoring David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.” Ben Affleck accepted the award on behalf of Fincher and the producers and used his moment on stage to comment on his infamous shower scene from the film. Affleck sarcastically thanked Fincher for keeping the set cool during the sequence: “If you’re going to have one chance for America to see your junk, you want it to be cold.”

The actor used the rest of his speech to poke fun at Fincher, saying the director couldn’t be there to accept the award because he was still busy shooting the film. “Just one or two more takes, we’re gonna have it,” Affleck said, mocking Fincher’s reputation of demanding multiple takes. Fincher may have betrayed Affleck’s trust with the temperature conditions on set, but the actor is still hoping 3-D will make up for it.

“I try to get it in every movie,” Affleck joked before talking about the importance director David Fincher placed on letting it all hang out, literally. “There may be some very brief nudity,” he said. Watch the interaction below.
