Back-to-Back Fashion Weeks in South Africa

And then there were two.
Less than a month before it was scheduled to take place, Africa Fashion Week was abruptly canceled. The event’s owner, African Fashion International, issued a statement confirming that “Africa Fashion Week, scheduled to take place from November 4 to 7, 2015, will no longer take place in its current format. In its place, AFI plans to convene leading stakeholders on the continent to the first Africa Fashion Forum.”
No reason was given for the development, which AFI positioned as “a new strategic direction.” The South African fashion industry was abuzz with speculation. Perhaps it was because Mercedes Benz, which had sponsored previous Africa Fashion Weeks, was no longer a sponsor, although it remained the headline sponsor for AFI’s two other properties, MBFW Johannesburg and MBFW Cape Town, industry officials said. Others believed that with the South African Fashion Week taking place from Oct. 22 to 26, followed immediately by Lagos Fashion and Design Week from Oct. 28 to 31, African designers might have preferred to show at Lagos, which has proven to be a successful platform, attracting a pan-African audience, not to mention more international media and buyers, than Africa Fashion Week.
AFI declined further comment, except to

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of critical scholarly work on consumer culture in South Africa, exploring the cultural, political, economic, and social aspects of consumption in post-Apartheid society. From sushi and Japanese diplomacy to Queen Sophie''s writhing gown, from middle class Sowetan golfers to an indebted working class citizenry, from wedding websites to wedding nostalgia, from the liberation of consuming to the low wage labour of selling, the chapters in this book demonstrate a variety of themes, showing that to start with consumption, rather than ending with it, allows for new insights into long-standing areas of social research. By mapping, exploring and theorizing the diverse aspects of consumption and consumer culture, the volume collectively works towards a fresh set of empirically rooted conceptual commentaries on the politics, economics, and social dynamics of modern South Africa. This effort, in turn, can serve as a foundation for thinking less parochially about neoliberal power and consumer culture. On a global scale, studying consumption in South Africa matters because in some ways the country serves as a microcosm for global patterns of income inequality, race-based economic oppression, and hopes for the material betterment of life. By exploring what consumption means on the ''local'' scale in South Africa, the possibility arises to trace new global links and dissonances. This book was originally published as a special issue ofCritical Arts.

Biofiltration of Waste Gases in Africa and the Caribbean

Biofiltration of Waste Gases in Africa and the Caribbean

Odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are typical products of industrial processes. VOCs may be originated from chemical mechanisms, solvent use, petroleum processing and several other sources, while odors are emitted mainly from livestocks, food processing industries, landfills, and waste water treatment plants. They are not known to cause serious diseases, however their persistence provokes nuisances to sensitive people in the case of odors whereas VOCs are precursors of pollutants that degrade the ozone layer. Therefore, the need of waste gas treatment technologies has increased tremendously. Biofiltration is a technique that employs a biofilm, containing a consortium of microorganisms in contact with water and waste gases, which by consuming the organic compounds present in the exhaust gases sustain their growth and simultaneously eliminate the content of several pollutants. It has been proven as a very efficient technique for the treatment of VOCs and odor emissions. In this book you will find an assessment of the potential of biofiltration to be established in Africa and the Caribbean (AF & CA). It is focused for engineers and technicians that provide services in air quality management and want to venture in these regions.

Youth and Higher Education in Africa. The Cases of Cameroon, South Africa, Eritrea and Zimbabwe

Youth and Higher Education in Africa. The Cases of Cameroon, South Africa, Eritrea and Zimbabwe

Student activism in Africa, at least since the early 1990s, has been preoccupied with popular struggles for democracy in both their respective countries and institutions of higher learning. The changing socio-economic and political conditions in many African countries, characterized by the decline in economic growth and the introduction of multi-party politics, among several other factors, have had different impact on students and student political organizations in African universities. This book recounts the responses of students to these changes in their attempt to negotiate better living and studying conditions. The four case studies contained in the book – Cameroon, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Eritrea – clearly reveal the very important aspects of the situation in which African students find themselves in many countries, and underscores the need to understand the character and development of higher education on the continent. Ministries of Higher Education, Vice Chancellors, Deans of Students, Student Unions and parents will find this book very useful in terms of understanding the tensions that often arise at institutions of higher learning and why solutions seem to be elusive.

Voltage Valet Grounded Electrical Adaptor for use in South Africa and parts of India

Voltage Valet Grounded Electrical Adaptor for use in South Africa and parts of India

PackingLight.com’s job is to outfit the traveler with all of the travel essentials one needs to venture anywhere. Our selection of Voltage Valet Grounded Adaptors allow you to connect your grounded three pin appliance into the outlets of the world. The Voltage Valet GUE plug modifies grounded appliances to fit the electrical outlets found in the South Africa and within some establishments in India (15 amp sockets). The question you may have is: do I need a grounded adaptor? The answer is if your North American appliance has two flat blades and one round pin, your appliance is grounded and you need one of our grounded adaptors. In addition, you need to check your appliances to see if they are dual voltage and capable of working on 240 voltage overseas. We urge visitors to link to our Foreign Electrical page to get more in-depth information on when you need adaptors and converters for travel. Most often we find our customers do not need converters/transformers to bring down the 240 voltage found in foreign countries. The reason is they possess appliances that are already dual voltage with the capability to use anywhere without using converters. That is correct, people with most battery chargers and small travel appliances can check their appliance and discover their appliance has a rating specification that reads “100/240V”–indicating that the appliance is dual voltage and can work on the high 240 voltage abroad. So please check your chargers for MP3 players, digital cameras, razors, camcorders, cell phones, etc. and look for yourself. In addition, check your compact, folding hair dryers, travel curling irons and straighteners, travel steamers, irons, and coffee makers. If they’re built specifically for travel and/or purchased from PackingLight.com, we can save you the cost of buying a converter when you probably don’t need it!NOTE: Some countries use more than one type of outlet and you should carry the appropriate adaptor for each outlet listed. Again, adaptor plugs DO NOT convert electricity – they simply modify foreign outlets. To determine the adaptor plug you need see our link to Voltage Valet’s country list in the Electricity Guide section. http://www.voltagevalet.com/elec_guide.htmlIf you have any further questions call us on our toll free number: 1-800-349-0525. Once Upon a Time – In Africa

Once Upon a Time – In Africa

I opened Donna’s journal that had lain on a shelf, unopened, for over 43 years. I was immediately transported back to 1967 the year I met the young nursing student who would within six months become my wife and with whom I would spend the next two years in Tanzania, East Africa as CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) volunteers; our two-year honeymoon. With little experience in love and marriage and even less experience in our chosen professions, we ventured out with a guitar, an accordion, our newly minted college certificates (architecture technology and nursing) and a whole lot of energy ready to see and experience the world. Living first in a mud hut, then for a couple of weeks in a down-at-the heels brothel, and finally in a flat owned and furnished by Public Works, I recall the travails of learning to prepare meals with one pot, keeping dry goods free from weevils, creating a Christmas tree out of a cactus with disastrous results for the cactus creating a home that soon became known as a stop-off point for volunteers, missionaries and travellers of all backgrounds, facing the reality that I had to change some of my personal habits if I wanted to keep the love I had just found, and of interacting with the local police and learning very quickly what it means to be a minority. Much of the story focuses on the daily challenges and small victories that each of us enjoyed working with situations totally outside anything we had experienced to date. With the purchase of an undependable piki-piki (motorcycle), overcrowded slow and decrepit local buses, and thumbs made for hitchhiking, the reefs, beaches, national parks, mountains and plains all offered adventure and undreamt of beauty. The story describes in detail our participation in a hunting safari that would be impossible to do today, and, of course, no stay in Tanzania would be complete without a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. The final chapters of the book highlight reflections that we now see t.

Changing Identifications and Alliances in North-east Africa

Forms of group identity play a prominent role in everyday lives and politics in north-east Africa. These volumes provide an interdisciplinary account of the nature and significance of ethnic, religious, and national identity in north-east Africa. Case studies from Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya illustrate the way that identities are formed and change over time, and how local, national, and international politics are interwoven. Specific attention is paid to the impact of modern weaponry, new technologies, religious conversion, food and land shortages, international borders, civil war, and displacement on group identities. Drawing on the expertise of anthropologists, historians and geographers, these volumes provide a significant account of a society profoundly shaped by identity politics and contribute to a better understanding of the nature of conflict and war, and forms of alliance and peacemaking, thus providing a comprehensive portrait of this troubled region.

Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: the Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: the Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Legumes play an important role in the cropping systems of sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Legumes are an important source of nutrition to both humans and livestock by providing the much needed protein, minerals, fibre and vitamins. The sale of legumes seed, leaves and fibre generates income for the marginalized communities especially women. Cultivation of legumes is essential for the regeneration of nutrient-deficient soils. By biologically fixing nitrogen (BNF) in the soil, legumes provide a relatively low-cost method of replacing otherwise expensive inorganic nitrogen in the soil. This enhances soil fertility and boosts subsequent cereal crop yields. Production of legumes in SSA is however; hampered by a number of constraints among them low and declining soil fertility, low soil pH, high salinity, drought and flooding, poor access to improved germplasm, diseases, pests and weeds. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. This book presents a synthesis of research work on legumes and draws attention to the importance of legumes in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and poverty alleviation in SSA.

Hailed by Gary Shteyngart as “a thing of wonder” “O, Africa ” is a rollicking, ambitious, and ultimately moving novel about old Hollywood, two brothers, forbidden love, and the timeless allure of the movies In the summer of 1928, twin brothers Micah and Izzy Grand are at the pinnacle of their movie-making careers. From their roots as sons of Brooklyn immigrants, the brothers have risen to become the kings of the silent comedy – with the brash, bloviating Micah directing and calling the shots, while his retreating brother skillfully works behind the lens. But when Micah’s penchant for gambling, and his affair with Rose, a beautiful and sharp-witted black woman from Harlem, combine to threaten his livelihood and his life, he finds himself in need of a quick escape. As the ascent of the talkies looms on the horizon, the brothers’ producer offers them an opportunity that couldn’t be better timed: travel to Africa to compile stock footage of the exotic flora and fauna, as well as filming a new comedy in the jungle. Together with an unlikely crew of producers, stars and hangers-on, the Grands set out for Malwiki, where among the tribesmen they each discover unforeseen truths about themselves, their lovers, and the meaning of the movies. Moving from the piers of Coney Island to Africa’s veldt, and further to the glitter of early Hollywood, O, AFRICA is an epic tale of self-discovery, the constraints of history and prejudice, and the stubborn resolve of family and friendship in the face of tragedy.

Burt Waikiki Brings Hawaii Lifestyle To South Africa… Kind Of

What do you get when you combine viral online marketing with Hawaii’s laid back lifestyle? Apparently, Burt Waikiki.

Burt is a long-haired, speedo-clad, womanizing personal trainer from the Hawaii island of Kauai whose mission is to share his secret to balancing mind, body and soul by flirting with women and lifting weights made of coconuts. Oh, and apparently he saves puppies, which makes sense because why not?

Also known as “The Guru of Goodness,” Burt is the star of a new viral marketing campaign launched by digital agency McCann and Kauai restaurants — a chain of Hawaii-inspired health food restaurants in South Africa.

The campaign’s purpose is to introduce the world to the “Kauai lifestyle.” This includes “healthy eating, being active and having time to chill,” according to Kauai’s marketing manager Leanne Jefferies.

“Even though the islands are far away, there is no excuse for us not to live by these principals in South Africa,” Jefferies told AdLip.com. “Our brand heritage is fun, informal and laid back. So we wanted to do a fun campaign.”

While the campaign’s efforts aim at promoting the island lifestyle, it’s clear that the videos are mostly for comedy rather than accuracy. Kauai’s residents do have a very strong voice when it comes to community health and the Aloha State actually does embrace yoga, but not everyone has a parachute to casually land on the beach or a “palace” on the sand with fake flower leis strewn about.

We’re also pretty sure that “scubaerobics” isn’t really a thing.

The original concept for Kauai restaurants began 17 years ago when the founders, originally from California, experienced life on the island of Kauai. Or, as they put it, “discovered the succulent fruits of this veritable Garden of Eden.”

What still remains unclear, however, is why the laid back, zen-seeking guru, Burt Waikiki, is named after one of Hawaii’s busiest and crowded cities, which isn’t even on the island of Kauai.
