17-Year Old Az. Girl Goes Missing After She Was Heard Screaming — and Boyfriend, 24, Is Suspect

Authorities are searching for a 17-year-old Arizona girl who was last heard from when her brother heard her screaming last Friday afternoon, according to a news release from Phoenix police.

The brother of Rosa Garcia-Acosta then spotted a grayish white SUV-type vehicle driving away from their family’s house, according to the release.

Four days later, authorities continue to believe that Garcia-Acosta, whom they describe as an “endangered juvenile,” was abducted and may be headed to Mexico in the company of 24-year-old Luis Fernando Morales, according to a police news release.

“The suspect is her boyfriend,” Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Armando Carbajal tells PEOPLE.

“There is a history of controlling behavior on the part of Luis,” police said in a statement.

Morales, at 6-foot-4-inches and 265 pounds, stands almost a foot taller than Garcia-Acosta and is twice as heavy. Authorities say the teen girl is 5-feet-5-inches tall, weighs 130 lbs. and has brown hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen at the family’s residence near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix.

Former NBA Player Tyler Honeycutt Found Dead After Shootout with Police: Reports

Former NBA and UCLA basketball player Tyler Honeycutt was found dead on the scene Friday in Southern California after a shootout with police, members of his family tell ABC-7. He was 27.

According to Los Angeles Police Department, officers “assigned to Van Nuys Division responded to a radio call of a Man with a Gun in the area of Riverside Drive & Tyrone Avenue” at around 5 p.m. ET.

After arriving at the scene, an officer-involved shooting occurred as “they made contact” and were “communicating” with “the suspect, a male in his 20’s.”

“The suspect fired a shot out of the residence and officers returned fire,” the LAPD said.

Neither the LAPD nor the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner Coroner would verify to PEOPLE that Honeycutt was the deceased suspect. The late athlete’s family, however, made the confirmation to ABC-7.

That network also reports that the shootout continued for several hours, during which the suspect barricaded himself in the residence.

The LAPD went on to announce that while no officers were injured, after the SWAT team entered the home, they found the man unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Investigations from our Force Investigation Division are at scene conducting a thorough investigation and we will provide more details as they become available,” the LAPD added.

Honeycutt was drafted into the NBA in 2011 by the Sacramento Kings.

After two seasons he was traded in February to the Houston Rockets, before being released from the team the following month.

He went on to play overseas, most recently for the Russian team Khimki.

Grieving Dad’s Words of Love After Son Was ‘Lured’ Into Woods in Rape and Murder: ‘I Will Always Honor Him’

In the wake of what authorities described as his 16-year-old son’s brutal rape and murder at the hands of a longtime friend, Washington dad Benjamin Eastman Jr.’s repeated message has been one of “love and togetherness.”

“I want thank the community and friends for all they have done for my family,” Eastman, who goes by “B.J.,” posted Thursday on Facebook, adding that words could not “explain the love feel right now.”

“There’s no way could ever get through this without it,” he wrote. “I would like everyone to remember my son how they want to but most of all how he has made our community and other communities far and wide stop and forget about judgment and hate.”

“Our community is full of love and togetherness right now,” he concluded his post. “My son made the world a better place. He continues to do so and I will always honor him for that. I ask that we all focus on that.”

Prosecutors say it’s too early in the case to discuss a possible motive in the beating death of Benjamin “Ben” Eastman III a week after his birthday — but the details released so far have attracted international attention.

Meanwhile, his community in southwestern Washington has drawn closer together in the shadow of such a vicious crime.

“When you have a county as close-knit and tight as Lewis and a town like Randle, which is even smaller, a tragic incident like this is going to impact everybody,” Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer tells PEOPLE.

RELATED: Slain Boy’s Father Sat Front Row in Court to Face Accused Murderers — ‘I Wanted Them to Look at Me’

Charging documents previously obtained by PEOPLE show how, according to investigators, Ben was tricked into going in the woods sometime after texting early on June 24 with another 16-year-old boy, Benito Marquez, a friend and classmate who had known Ben for years.

Marquez and his older brother, 21-year-old Jonathon Adamson, “lured” Ben “under the guise of a camping trip,” prosecutors said in a probable cause affidavit.

There the pair allegedly carried out an assault they had planned together: striking Ben for some “20 to 45 minutes” and kicking him more than 100 times. During the attack, Ben was sexually assaulted with a stick, according to the affidavit.

Adamson and Marquez beat him in the head with a large rock, just to make sure he was dead, authorities believe.

Finally, they allegedly buried his body on the property of a relative where it was discovered three days later, after Ben was reported missing by his father. His shallow grave was marked with a homemade cross of sticks.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Marquez, who had seemingly posted on Facebook asking for help finding Ben before his body was discovered, was an early subject of the investigation, according to authorities. But he and Adamson then allegedly fled the county, traveling some 200 miles east, before being found by the state patrol on June 29, the probable cause affidavit states.

They were each interviewed by police and subsequently charged with first-degree rape and murder as well as tampering with physical evidence and unlawful disposal of remains, the affidavit states.

Detention records confirm they remain in custody in Lewis County in lieu of $ 10 million bond.

They have not entered pleas and an attorney representing them declined to comment to PEOPLE. They are scheduled to return to court on Thursday.

While B.J., Ben’s dad, has spoken out about the suspects and sat front row in court at their first hearing, on Monday, he has largely kept the focus on his boy.

“I want everyone to remember the love we feel for each other,” he posted on Facebook Friday, following a vigil for Ben. “My son will live in our hearts.”

He also offered this: “Remember to smile or say hi to a stranger.”

Speaking to local TV station KOMO earlier this week, B.J. said, “It’s easy to get caught up in the negative aspect of this, but I remember my son and his smile.”

“There is evil people out there,” B.J. said then. “I don’t know what makes them tick. I don’t want to know. I’m loved and my son was loved and that’s all I’m about.”

Prosecutor Meyer tells PEOPLE Ben’s death — the violence and intimacy of it — is “hard to put into words.”

“Ben was a nice kid from a good family,” he says.

Others who knew the teen have also paid tribute to his love of the outdoors and sports, especially the Miami Dolphins, and his loyalty and light spirt.

“You’d be in a bad mood and he’d just walk in — you’d just be mad as mad as you could be and he’d just crack a smile and make you giggle just over anything, always,” Ben’s brother Derek Dunaway told KOMO.

“He really liked to stand up for his friends,” Principal Chris Schumaker told the Daily Chronicle after a vigil Tuesday night at Ben’s school, where he was a rising junior.

“A lot of the time, his friends would get in trouble because of his shenanigans and somehow he was able to kind of sidestep getting caught. So then towards the end he would kind of say, ‘Mr. Schumaker, it was kind of me, I deserve the detention,’ ” the principal recalled. “And I would say, ‘No, you know they did the crime, they get the time.’ He tried really hard to plea-deal consequences his friends earned. But in the end, I would just say ‘Ben, go back to class it’s okay. They’ll get through it, you’ll get through it. There’s always tomorrow.’ ”

Sarah Hyland Excited to Get Back to the Gym After Hospitalization: ‘Strong > Skinny’

Sarah Hyland is ready to get her strength back after dealing with a health scare that landed her in the hospital.

The Modern Family star, 27, was hospitalized on June 18 for an unknown health issue, but one week later, she shared that she was cleared to get back in the gym.

“Workout before work,” Hyland wrote on her Instagram Story, telling the camera, “I’m normally shaky, but I’m even shakier from working out.”

Hyland posted in another slide that she plans to build up her muscles.

“Finally have clearance to workout,” she wrote. “Abs here I come. It’s been a while. Strong > skinny.”

Hyland revealed on Friday, for National Selfie Day, that she was forced to leave work on Monday for her hospital visit.

“Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle and feelin cute. This time for #nationalselfieday I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is,” she wrote, alongside a picture of herself.

“So here is my face that was torn from work against my will. But I’m very grateful it was. Health should always come first,” she said, with the hashtag, “#stayhealthymyfriends.”

The actress, who was in the middle of shooting the upcoming film The Wedding Year, was able to return home on Saturday, a source told PEOPLE.

Hyland has a history of health issues, including kidney dysplasia, which required a kidney transplant in 2012. Her condition also affects her body composition, and in May 2017 she addressed the frequent skinny-shaming she hears from people on social media.

” ‘Eat a burger,’ ‘your head is bigger than your body and that’s disgusting,’ ” she quoted on Twitter. “And you’re right! … No one’s head should be bigger than their body but considering I’ve basically been on bed rest for the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass. My circumstances have put me in a place where I’m not in control of what my body looks like. So I strive to be as healthy as possible, as everyone should.”

“I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting,” she said. “I love to be STRONG. (I’ll be using that word a lot) Strength is everything. Being strong has gotten me where I am. Both mentally and physically. I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.’ ”

Florida Woman’s Arm Found Inside Alligator After She Disappeared While Walking Dogs

The body of a Florida woman who went missing on Friday morning while walking her dogs has been found, and police suspect a 12-foot, 6-inch gator captured nearby is responsible for her death.

On Saturday, the law enforcement division of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced that search teams had recovered the body of Shizuka Matsuki from the Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park lake in Davie — not far from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Shizuka Matsuki,” the organization tweeted. “We will be conducting a thorough investigation into this incident.”

Matsuki, 47, had last been seen at the lake near the Ft. Lauderdale lake walking her two dogs, a witness told Davie Police Detective Viviana Gallinal, CBS News reported. A short time later, she was gone, though her dogs were found still on leeches and barking towards the water.

Trappers pulled an alligator from the lake hours later, NBC News reported. FWC officials then cut the reptile open and found a human arm inside, believed to be Matsuki’s.

“After an initial necropsy, evidence was found that indicates that the victim of this incident was bitten by the alligator that was captured earlier today,” FWC spokesman Robert Klepper said, according to WSVN.

One of Matsuki’s dogs also “got bit by the gator,” Davie Police Major Dale Engle told the Sun Sentinel.

Her husband was out of town at the time of the attack, the paper reported.

A neighbor told the Miami Herald that he had warned his wife not to walk near the nature park. “He had warned her not to take the dogs over to that place because they had seen gators before and it isn’t safe,” neighbor Peter Limia, 37, said. “She was just your ordinary soccer mom. It’s a tragedy.”

The dogs, which are pit bulls, are currently with Broward County Animal Care, reported the Herald.

REALTED VIDEO: Alligator Captured on Video in Same Location Where Boy Was Snatched by Alligator at Disney Hotel

The most recent was in 2016, when 2-year-old Lane Graves was dragged into a lake by an alligator and killed while playing on the water’s edge during a family vacation at a Walt Disney World hotel in Orlando.

Woman Gets 18 Years After Posing as Nurse to Kidnap Newborn and Raise the Girl as Her Own

On Friday, nearly two decades after she abducted an hours-old infant from a hospital in Florida and then raised the girl as her own, a South Carolina woman was reportedly sentenced to 18 years in prison for kidnapping — the length of time the stolen child lived away from her biological family.

“There are no winners and no losers in this case,” Judge Marianne Aho said at the sentencing hearing for 52-year-old Gloria Williams, of Walterboro, according to the Associated Press.

Williams pleaded guilty earlier this year to kidnapping and custodial interference. Under the terms of her plea deal, she could be sentenced to no more than 22 years in prison. She was ordered on Friday to serve five years concurrently for the interference charge.

Williams was sentenced in Duval County, Florida, where she kidnapped newborn Kamiyah Mobley from UF Health Jacksonville, then called University Medical Center, on July 10, 1998, while she was disguised as a nurse.

She said at a sentencing hearing last month that she smuggled Kamiyah out of the building in a bag, local TV station WJAX reported. She had not planned that day to steal a baby when — having recently miscarried — she traveled from her South Carolina home to Florida, she said: “I felt like I was on autopilot. My life was out of control, I lost everything.”

Mobley’s mother, Shanara Mobley, was 16 years old and has said she trusted Williams because the older woman spent hours getting to know her and Kamiyah.

Neither a prosecutor’s spokesman nor Mobley’s attorney immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The headline-making case broke open in January 2017, when authorities announced that anonymous tips led them to discover Williams raised Kamiyah in South Carolina under the name Alexis Manigo and that Kamiyah believed Williams was her biological mother.

The revelation that Kamiyah was alive and well attracted international attention, and her return came as a startling relief to her biological family.

Still, the confirmation of her life as an unwitting kidnapping victim set up a series of thorny entanglements for her and her loved ones — between those who raised her and those she had been stolen from for so long.

“It doesn’t heal now. I’m still hurting. When you’re reaching out to my child, that is my child,” Shanara said in court in May. “I am your mother, Kamiyah! I am your mother.”

• It was the scandal that rocked America’s most storied political family and changed the course of presidential history. PEOPLE‘s first-ever podcast, Cover-Up, dives into the Chappaquiddick scandal and attempts to piece together what happened in the hours after Ted Kennedy’s car went over a narrow wooden bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or wherever podcasts are available.

Of her enduring heartache — each year buying a cake to mark another passing birthday for her missing daughter, Shanara said, “I always thought about my baby every day, every day, every day. I would catch myself in my car crying, in bed crying, taking a bath crying, doing something with her siblings and crying.”

While on the stand during a two-day hearing in May, Williams apologized to Kamiyah’s parents and told her, “I never meant to cause you any harm, any pain, any of that,” according to WJAX.

In the months since Williams’ arrest, Kamiyah has acknowledged the wrongfulness of what was done to her as a baby while also continuing to note that, even if she was raised by her abductor, she was raised in a loving and seemingly normal household.

“From that one mistake, I was given the best life. I was,” Kamiyah said last year. “I had everything I ever needed, wanted. I had love especially. I understand what she did was wrong, but just don’t lock her up and throw away the key like everything she did was just awful.”

Kamiyah, now 19, did not attend Friday’s sentencing but had asked for leniency for Williams, according to her attorney.

“Kamiyah is now processing what it means for the woman she’s known as mother to receive an 18-year prison sentence,” Justin Bamberg said, the Post & Courier reports. “However, she understands Gloria had to be held accountable for her actions. She also understands that her biological parents have the absolute right to view today as a joyous day.”

Kamiyah’s mother, however, had asked at least for the maximum possible term of 22 years in prison. If she had her way, Shanara said, Williams would have been put to death.

In a statement, Williams’ attorney Diana Johnson said they had “hoped for” a lighter sentence but nonetheless “appreciate the time and attention Judge Aho took to fully consider this matter,” according to ABC News.

Johnson said Williams was also thankful for “everyone involved in her defense as well as all of the people who either wrote letters or appeared on her behalf.”

Kamiyah’s father, Craig Aiken, told reporters after the sentencing that, with it resolved, “We can continue on our journey of healing together as a family and support our daughter on her decision making.”

Kamiyah’s mother did not comment after court, according to news reports, though others of her biological relatives expressed their joy.

According to the Post & Courier, Kamiyah still lives in Walterboro but spends time with her family in Jacksonville

After Friday’s hearing, her grandmother Velma Aiken reportedly said: “I can love my grandbaby as my own now.”

Father of Two Nearly Dies After Being Bitten By Rattlesnake’s Severed Head: ‘It Was Very Scary’

A man from Corpus Cristi, Texas, is recovering in the hospital after receiving more than 20 doses of antivenom to save him from a bite he received from the severed head of a rattlesnake.

On May 27, Jennifer Sutcliffe was beginning to prep her yard and garden for a family cookout that day when she came across a startling sight.

“I was pulling the grass and little weeds that were growing,” Sutcliffe, a nurse, tells PEOPLE. “I reached down to pull a clump of grass that was growing by one of my flowers — and I almost grabbed a rattlesnake.”

The snake, a four-foot long Western diamondback, was slithering through the garden and had come dangerously close to the mother of two. Sutcliffe called out to her husband, Jeremy, who ran over with a shovel and rammed it into the venomous animal, decapitating it. With the snake’s head severed from its body, the couple figured they were clear of any danger. But when Jeremy reached down to dispose of the animal’s remains almost 10 minutes later, the snake sunk its fangs into the fingers of his right hand.

Sutcliffe called 911 and helped her husband into their car as she tried to find a local hospital with rattlesnake antivenom available. But as she drove, Jeremy’s condition rapidly worsened, and it seemed as if they were quickly running out of time.

“We only got two miles down the road before he started going in and out of consciousness and having seizures. It was very scary,” Sutcliffe, 43, recalls. “I was trying to keep him calm, alert and awake, and just letting him know we were getting help.”

RELATED: Alabama Father Paralyzed After Venomous Coral Snake Bite: He ‘Thought It Was Just a Kingsnake’

With Jeremy fading, Sutcliffe pulled over and waited for medical personnel, who then rushed Jeremy to a helicopter and flew him to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital. Once there, Jeremy went into septic shock, and doctors had to place him in a medically induced coma by that evening.

“His blood pressure kept bottoming out, so they were giving him a lot of fluids,” Sutcliffe says. “I thought maybe he was going to be okay, but then the doctor told me it was a very grim scenario, because of the amount of venom that he got. That’s when I realized he wasn’t out of the woods.”

With her husband on a ventilator and his organs failing, doctors told Jennifer several times during those first 24 hours that her 40-year-old husband may not make it through the ordeal. Thankfully, Jeremy survived that first critical day, and doctors were able to stabilize him.

Jeremy made it out his coma on May 31, after receiving a total of 26 doses of antivenom, a massive amount considering bites typically only need two to four doses, Jennifer says. As of Thursday, Jeremy remains in stable condition, though he is experiencing acute renal failure.

“He’s stable, but he’s still on dialysis because his kidneys aren’t working,” Sutcliffe says. “They’re doing a lot of wound care as he lost the skin on his right two middle fingers, it’s just a high risk of infection for that wound.”

The couple has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Jeremy’s medical expenses, which has so far raised $ 200 of their $ 10,000 goal.

RELATEDWoman Mauled By Bear in Montana Walks Miles to Safety With Skull Fracture

According to National Geographic, when a snake is decapitated, its head still has the capacity to carry out reflexive action, such as being able to open its mouth, bite and inject large amounts of venom. They are able to keep these reflexive abilities up to an hour after having their heads severed. In a story that made headlines in 2014, a chef from China was fatally bitten by a severed cobra’s head while he prepared to cook its body for soup — some 20 minutes after he decapitated it. In January of that same year, an Austrailian man was bitten by a red-bellied black snake 45 minutes after he severed its head with a shovel.

It’s important to point out that not all snakes in North America are venomous, and are harmless to humans. But if you are bitten by a venomous serpent — such as a rattlesnake, coral snake, water moccasin and copperhead — Mayo Clinic suggests that you remain calm, remove jewelry and tight clothing before you start to swell, and position yourself so that the bite is below or at the level of your heart until you can get medical attention.

“One of the things I’ve learned is if it ever happens again, is if we’re able to step away from the snake and not getting bitten, go into the house and call 911,” Sutcliffe says of what she would do differently. “Have them come to take care of the snake, that would be the best scenario next time.”

Top High School Basketball Player Dies After Collapsing Mid-Game: He Had ‘So Much Life’

James Hampton, a top high school basketball player, died Saturday after collapsing midway through a game.

The 17-year-old played for Team United, an elite team from Charlotte, North Carolina, and was competing in a Nike Elite Youth Basketball League game in Hampton, Virginia when he died.

Hampton ran down the court and said to a referee, “Hey, ref,” before collapsing, Team United’s director, Jacoby Davis, said.

“He just fell down on the floor,” Davis told The Charlotte Observer. “He had seizures a year ago — and I remember telling me that, ‘I saw his eyes rolling back in his head.’ I ran on the court thinking he was having a seizure. A trainer came over and said he didn’t know what was wrong. Another trainer checked his pulse. He said he didn’t have a pulse. It got crazy after that.”

Medical responders ran onto the court and gave Hampton chest compressions before taking him away by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“It’s hard to even explain,” Davis said. “To have a kid in your program with so much life — that’s just the kind of kid he was. He was always happy. For something like this to happen, I can’t even explain it. And to have to talk to a parent not even in town and tell him that his son has died, well, that’s more devastating.”

The team decided to stay and play the rest of the tournament in Hampton’s honor and decisively won their game on Sunday. Chris Carrawell, Duke University’s assistant coach and father to Caleb Stone-Carrawell, one of Hampton’s teammates, said it was a difficult weekend for the group.

“You could tell at the beginning, they were probably a little emotional, in shock, so to speak,” Carrawell told the Daily Press. “Which is, wow, you’re 16, 17-years-old, and you go through what you saw on the court less than 24 hours ago. For them to shake it off and respond and come away with a big win: You can already tell, is … looking out for them.”

Santa Fe Shooting Victim Was Planning to Have 17th Birthday Party the Day After He Was Killed

Days before he was fatally shot in last Friday’s mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, Jared Black turned 17 years old, according to multiple reports.

He planned to celebrate his birthday with family and friends that Saturday, the New York Times and KTRK report. But what was supposed to be a celebratory week for Jared and his family became a tragic one when Black became one of 10 fatal victims — eight of them students — of the massacre.

“It’s hard,” Jared’s brother, Nick Black, told KTLA. “I still don’t believe it happened. It’s horrible.”

Jared was in first period art class when shots were fired inside the classroom, a man named Travis Stanich wrote on Facebook Friday morning, before he knew Jared was dead.

“He was in the classroom that it started I’m worried sick” Stanich wrote, “Still waiting to find out if Jared is ok.”

Jared loved art, his family told KTLA. A friend paid tribute to the teen with a Facebook post and picture.

“He was my old friend and I cherish every memory I’ve had with him,” the friend wrote. “He will never be forgotten from me.”

Last summer, Jared spent time with his father, two brothers and stepmother in Southern California, KTLA reports.

“It’s wonderful memories like those that will remain in their hearts forever! I’m thankful for that time they spent,” family friend and spokesperson Elizabeth McGinnis wrote on a GoFundMe page to help Jared’s family.

McGinnis was with Jared’s father, Bobby, when he learned his son had been killed.

“Such a rough day for all,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“ sat in misery for 13 hours not knowing if was one of the victims,” McGinnis continued. “Then he got the devastating news after 6 p.m.”

The suspect in the Santa Fe shooting is 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, who is being held in the Galveston County Jail without bond on capital murder charges.

Sarah Paulson Hides in a Box After Getting Scared Again on Ellen: ‘Worst Place on Earth’

If Ellen DeGeneres promises not to scare you on TV… don’t believe her.

The latest celebrity to fall victim to DeGeneres’ favorite talk show stunt is Sarah Paulson. While appearing on Ellen Monday to promote the upcoming Ocean’s 8, Paulson was skittish from the moment she sat down. (She was spooked no less than three times during her last appearance on the show.)

“The coast is clear — so far,” said Paulson, 43, after apprehensively checking out the hollow coffee table between the two chairs, which someone typically jumps out of in the middle of interviews to scare guests.

“I did ask for this mirror so I could check behind me at any chance,” she added, joking that she had considered conducting the entire interview facing the other way to make sure no one surprised her from backstage.

And while DeGeneres, 60, vowed she had no plans to scare the American Horror Story star, she couldn’t help but break her promise during a hilarious game of “5 Second Rule,” arranging for a staff member dressed as a clown (one of Paulson’s biggest fears) to jump out of the podium for another priceless fright.

“This is the worst place on earth,” called out Paulson, who promptly sought refuge in the hollow box. “I’m not coming out!”

Ellen airs weekdays (check local listings).

6-Month-Old Baby Thriving After Undergoing Unique Form of Open-Heart Surgery: ‘It’s Extra Special’

The Kelley family is excited for an “extra special” Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday, with their 6-month-old daughter Bryce thriving after undergoing a unique form of open-heart surgery.

As a newborn, doctors discovered that Bryce had a heart murmur, and would likely need surgery.

“It was scary,” her father, Mike, tells PEOPLE. “I think any heart issue sounds scary, and the fact that she had a hole in between the two ventricles was definitely frightening and nerve-wracking.”

Surgery wasn’t certain, and the best-case scenario was that tissue would grow over the hole in Bryce’s heart.

“We were just hoping that the whole side would shrink, and just through monitoring it we found out that it wasn’t going to happen because she wasn’t gaining weight,” her mom, Erin, says. “She had a lot of congestion when she was breathing. She just wasn’t growing the way she was supposed to.”

At four months old, the doctors determined that Bryce would need surgery as soon as possible. Though she was in the 50th percentile for weight when she was born, Bryce had sunk to below zero — “off the charts,” says Mike.

Her cardiologist brought in Dr. Khanh H. Nguyen, Chief, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, who performs a unique form of open-heart surgery where the incision is made under the armpit, rather than the traditional method of cutting down the breast bone. Dr. Nguyen started using this different form 14 years ago.

“Most heart surgeries stem from the chest, and we know that this is not the greatest approach, and we had been looking for other options,” he tells PEOPLE. “This technique had been done in Germany and Switzerland, and I thought I should try it, and we never looked back.”

Not only does it leave patients with a much smaller scar — only about three inches long, and under the armpit — but it also has a much faster recovery time — two days versus several weeks.

“This technique works very well in small children, and the fact that they’re children — they tend to be very active and not having to heal the breastbone is very helpful,” Dr. Nguyen says. “Bryce was able to go home in just two days.”

During the surgery, the Kelleys say that they were nervous, but trusted the doctors. It took five hours total, and about three days after the surgery Bryce was “back to her happy self,” Erin says.

“She had a lot of abdominal gas, so the first night she was home was kind of rough and scary, but after that everything went great,” Mike adds.

Now, they’re excited to have her at home and thriving for their first Mother’s Day.

“It will feel very blessed,” Erin says. “I’m very happy to have her in our lives. She’s just a blessing to our family.”

“I think it’s extra special,” Mike adds. “She’s so little and she’s already gone through heart surgery, it’s hard to believe. But you wouldn’t know it.”

Ruth Chapman Talks Life After Fashion, Hot Labels That Are Bucking the System

LONDON — Ruth Chapman may be easing her way out of the day-to-day fashion business — and moving on to more cerebral pursuits — but that hasn’t tempered her passion for seeking the industry’s next great talents and rethinking brick-and-mortar retail.
It’s been a buzzy 12 months for Chapman, who sold, the retailer she founded with her husband Tom Chapman in 1987, to Apax Partners in September in a deal valuing the company at $ 1 billion.
The sale was the surprise of the summer: For years the Chapmans had expected to pursue an initial public offering for their business, but in a matter of just a few weeks, they had multiple suitors knocking on their door, with Apax emerging as the winner.
“We got to a position where we were doing extremely well, the business was growing extremely fast and a lot of people came knocking. So we thought: ‘OK, we’ll continue to grow the business for IPO, but we’ll listen to what they have to say’ — and conversations began to develop,” said Chapman.
“We felt like we had done this for a really long time, and if we could step back that would be an exciting thing to do. Apax are a

‘Miracle’ Boy, 13, Who Was Brain Dead for Days Wakes After Parents Sign Organ Donation Papers

Trenton McKinley defied all odds.

After the 13-year-old boy was severely injured in a dune buggy accident, his parents made the difficult decision to donate his organs following days of him being brain dead, according to Fox 10. But after the papers were signed, he miraculously regained consciousness.

The incident happened two months ago, when McKinley was playing at a friend’s house in Alabama. While the teen was riding in a small utility trailer being pulled by a dune buggy, his friend suddenly hit the brakes and caused the trailer to flip.

“I hit the concrete and the trailer landed on top of my head,” recalled McKinley, speaking to Fox 10. “After that, I don’t remember anything.”

His mother, Jennifer Reindl, told the outlet that her son had been dead for 15 minutes when she arrived at USA Medical Center in Mobile.

else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( ‘onreadystatechange’, func ); }
} )();

“All I saw was a stretcher with his feet hanging out. He was dead a total of 15 minutes,” she said, adding that doctors prepared her for the worst. “When he came back, they said he would never be normal again. They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain, that he would be a vegetable if he even made it.”

After days of being brain dead, McKinley’s parents decided to donate his organs to five children in need that were a match for the teen.

“They said the next time his heart stopped they had to let him die….this was a ….or I could sign a paper to donate his organs to save five other kids….and they would keep hitting him with adrenaline till monday….so I signed it,” Reindl wrote on a Facebook page set up to help raise funds for his recovery. “His eyes were solid black and dry and I knew he would not hesitate to save 5 more lives.”

She continued, “The next day I got a call….they canceled the final brain wave test….right before they hooked him up his hand moved Then his feet…so they looked at his eyes and they were back….he had blue eyes….now they are green with small white specks like glitter…they say when you look upon god…pigment changes…and my baby was in heaven for a whole day….he is a miracle.”

However, McKinley began showing signs of brain activity just one day before doctors were set to take him off life support.

McKinley suffered multiple skull fractures as well as kidney failure “due to the lack of oxygen after his cardiac arrest,” according to the Facebook page. Fox 10 reported that he continues to suffer from nerve pain and seizures every day, but he’s keeping a positive attitude.

“I said I could turn sideways and put salsa in there and eat chips and dip out of my head,” he joked to Fox 10. “No more washing dishes for me!”

He’s had three brain surgeries and continues to make progress as he recovers at home. A video posted to Facebook showed McKinley sinking a basketball into a hoop at rehab last month, while another showed him taking a stroll with the help of a walker.

McKinley told Fox 10 that he feels he was in heaven while he was unconscious.

“I was in an open field walking straight,” he explained. “There’s no other explanation but God. There’s no other way. Even doctors said it.”

Black Man Awarded $10,000 After Toronto Restaurant Made Him Pay Up Front For His Meal

Canada’s Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has ordered a popular Chinese restaurant to pay a black customer $ 10,000 for forcing the man and his friends to prepay for their meals in 2014, reports say.

Emile Wickham tells PEOPLE he was celebrating his 28th birthday with three friends on May 3, 2014, when the group decided to head to Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant —a beloved staple in downtown Toronto —for food.

“We were seated, we ordered food and the waiter immediately asked us to pay,” says Wickham, now 31. “We were skeptical, like, ‘Why do we need to pay before we eat?’ They indicated that it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.”

Wickham and his friends, the only black customers there at the time, did as they were asked. But suspicious of the rule, Wickham began asking other diners whether they’d been asked to pay upfront.

They all said no.

Wickham then confronted the waiter, whom he says quickly became defensive.

“We were confident, like, ‘Yo, this is messed up.’ When we confronted them, they didn’t even deny it,” Wickham says of the staff. “They offered us our money back. They didn’t offer any defense of why they did it.”

RELATED: Starbucks Apologizes After Boycott Erupts Over Video of Black Men Arrested in Philadelphia Store

Upset, the group collected their money and quickly left the restaurant.

“I couldn’t believe that they were so bold in it. I couldn’t believe the boldness of the action,” says Wickham, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago. “I had some hope that they would be like, ‘Guys, sorry we messed up. Please accept our apology.’ They have not showed any ounce of regret.”

He adds: “We have a business who thinks it’s okay to discriminate against its black customers.”

Almost exactly one year after the incident, Wickham filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, which handles harassment and discrimination claims. Wickham accused restaurant staff of racially profiling him and his friends.

In a statement submitted to the Tribunal by an attorney for the restaurant, officials said the establishment had implemented a prepayment policy years ago for customers who were nor “regulars” at the restaurant in an attempt to prevent dining-and-dashing, according to the Washington Post. But one of Wickham’s friends, who was present the night of the incident, testified that he had eaten at Hong Shing numerous times.

The Tribunal also found no evidence that any such policy existed at the restaurant, the Post reports.

On April 18, the Tribunal ordered Hong Shing Chinese Restaurant officials to pay Wickham $ 10,000 as a result of the incident.

However, Wickham says he was simply hoping for an apology.

“ doesn’t really bring me the level of excitement or joy other people might think it may give me. I really just wanted an apology and for the restaurant to be held accountable for their actions,” Wickham tells PEOPLE. “I would’ve been more than happy with them taking responsibility for what they did and showing a commitment to never do it again. That’s something I don’t feel is going to happen.”

But, he adds, he’s relieved that the Tribunal took him seriously.

“When I found out that the decision went in my favor, I was so relieved that we were believed. I didn’t even think about the monetary… I was just like, ‘Wow, she believed us.’ “

50 Years After Bill Cosby Allegedly Drugged Her, One Accuser Says, ‘We All Spoke Truth to Power’

After Bill Cosby’s conviction Thursday for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004, many of his other accusers are feeling vindicated.

For Kristina Ruehli, who alleges Cosby drugged and tried to sexually assault her in 1965, the conviction represents a watershed moment for women’s rights.

“We’ve got the snowball rolling but this is not the end.  It’s still moving,” Ruehli tells PEOPLE. “But it’s going be an avalanche. I think it will really pave the way in the future for women. We all spoke truth to power.”

On Thursday, Montgomery County jurors deliberated for about 14 hours over two days before handing down the guilty verdict. Afterward, Cosby was freed on bond by the judge.

Cosby was convicted on three charges, each of which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years: aggravated indecent assault: penetration with lack of consent; penetration while unconscious; and penetration after administrating an intoxicant.

State law could allow a maximum possible penalty of 10 years per charge — or 30 years total, but the judge will decide whether Cosby will serve his terms concurrently or consecutively.

Cosby assaulted Constand, 45, in his Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, mansion in January 2004.

Cosby, who did not testify during his trial, denies similar allegations from more than 60 women.

Ruehli was Jane Doe Number 12 in Andrea Constand’s 2005 civil lawsuit against Cosby – which Constand settled in 2006. Ruehli claims she was drugged by Cosby in December 1965 while she was a secretary at his talent agency.

In 2015, Reuhli filed a defamation lawsuit against  Cosby, claiming that public comments made about her by Cosby’s team after she and other women came forward were defamatory. After a judge denied Cosby’s motion to dismiss her case in 2016, Ruehli, feeling vindicated, withdrew her case.

“I put my money where my mouth was – I spent nearly $ 100,000 on lawyers – to prove that I was telling the truth … about this monster,” Ruehli previously told PEOPLE. “I have stood up for myself. Now it’s time to go back to my happy life, lose some weight and weed my garden.”

Ruehli says she has put the past behind her and is feeling peaceful.

“I’m feeling a renewed faith in the justice system,” she tells PEOPLE. “I feel this is sort of confirmation in the belief systems I was taught all my life.”

She adds, “Something in my being that always believed in right from wrong, and now I can continue to believe that given sunlight, that there is justice.”

After 27 Years, Union Plants a Flag in Tokyo

TOKYO — On Friday, men’s wear retailer Union celebrated its first new store since its Los Angeles location opened in 1991. Streetwear fans packed into the space and even spilled out into the street, where a food truck was parked to serve the crowd. Inside, DJs played and guests sipped on Coronas.
“The kind of family that this store came from that I grew out of is Stüssy, Supreme, Undefeated and Union, and there’s always been a really strong connection to Japan from early, early on,” said Union’s owner, Chris Gibbs. The Tokyo location is a franchise partnership with Jack Inc., which will also serve as the brand’s distributor in Japan. In addition, the company has been Stüssy’s local partner for over 35 years.
Gibbs believes that Union can bring something new and different to Tokyo’s already strong retail scene.
“What we do and what we’ve done for 30 years is mix all these different brands, which is not something that has traditionally happened here in Japan,” he said. “I think there’s kind of two parts to what we do, which is mixing of the brands which is not something that I think Japan really did or understood for a long time. Organized by the International Labor Rights Forum, United Students Against Sweatshops and Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, Saturday’s National Day of Action was held as part of a Global Week of Action. The objective was to encourage brands sourcing apparel from Bangladesh to sign a legally binding workplace safety program together with two global unions — Industriall and UNI — and eight Bangladeshi unions.
Five years ago, following the Rana Plaza building collapse that killed 1,134 garment workers, Abercrombie & Fitch was among the first to sign the The Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. However, Abercrombie & Fitch has not signed the renewal accord, despite urging from USAS. Executives at the company declined to say Monday whether they plan to. A company spokeswoman said via e-mail, “A&F Co. is committed to its clothes being made in safe work environments. We have a responsibility to our stakeholders to thoroughly evaluate the best options for continuing to drive meaningful safety improvements in the factories that produce our clothes. We are proud of the great strides our

Texas Man Guilty of Murdering and Dismembering College Student After Falsely Claiming She Died During Sex

A Texas man was convicted Monday of murdering a college student who was found dismembered and burned in 2016.

The 12-member jury rejected Charles Dean Bryant’s defense that he panicked only after the 24-year-old woman died during consensual “kinky” sex.

Jacqueline Vandagriff, a junior at Texas Woman’s University, vanished on the evening of Sept. 13, 2016 — not long after she spent time with Bryant, 31, at a bar in Denton, Texas. Her remains were later found burning in a plastic kiddie pool in a park near Lake Grapevine.

Police soon uncovered security footage of her sharing a drink with Bryant, and they said the two eventually left the bar together.

Authorities also suspect that Bryant, 31, updated Vandagraff’s Twitter account after her death.

The night before her body was found, a tweet on Vandagriff’s account read, “I’m glad I decided to get off tinder and waked into a bar.”

“Never knew I could feel like this,” reads the tweet that appeared on Vandagriff’s page on Sept. 15, one day after her charred corpse was recovered.

Bryant had been charged with capital murder in Vandagriff’s slaying.

During her opening statement on April 9, defense attorney Glynis McGinty told jurors that Bryant is only guilty of evidence tampering but was not guilty of murder.

McGinty argued that Bryant “freak out” after Vandagriff’s death, which the defense claimed occurred during sex, and tried to hide her body.

“He went to Walmart at 4 a.m. and bought a shovel and goes back to his house where he had left Jackie and tried to dig a hole but the earth was too hard,” she told the jury.

But the prosecution argued otherwise, pointing out that Vandagriff’s purse was found in a garbage can in Bryant’s home. The prosecution also cited evidence that Vandagriff was bound.

The indictment against Bryant stated that he “killed and caused serious bodily injury to Jacqueline Vandagriff using a zip tie, a knife or machete, and an unknown object.”

“Jackie had just started a new path at TWU,” prosecutor Lucas Allen said in his opening statement, according to local TV station WFAA. “It was a good path, until an evil, destructive figure, Charles Bryant, stepped .”

Jurors in Fort Worth agreed with the prosecution. They deliberated less than three hours before finding Bryant guilty of murder. He was also found guilty of tampering with evidence.

The punishment phase of the trial is underway. Bryant faces up to life in prison.

PEOPLE’s call to McGinty were not immediately returned and it was unclear if Bryant planned to appeal.

Tinsley Mortimer Debuts New Short Hairstyle After Previously Saying She’d Never Cut It

Tinsley Mortimer is trying something new with her hair.

On Saturday, the 42-year-old Real Housewives of New York City star announced that she had done something she previously said would never happen: she cut her hair.

“In honor of the new season of #RHONY…I chopped my hair!! 💇‍♀️🍎 Thanks Ludmilla @oscarblandisalon,” she wrote alongside a picture of her new, shortened ‘do.

Mortimer’s haircut comes as a big surprise for RHONY fans.

In an episode from season 9 of the series, fellow New York City Housewife Carole Radziwill suggested Mortimer chop her hair to help the public forget about Mortimer’s headline-making mugshot, which was taken when the former socialite was arrested in 2016 for trespassing at an ex-boyfriend’s home.

But the idea of changing her hair sent Mortimer into panic mode. “I would never. I’ve always had long hair. Stop. I’m like sweating right now, having a nervous breakdown!” she said.

“I don’t feel comfortable with it. The way that I wear my fake eyelashes and curl my hair, it’s because I feel comfortable that way. That’s me,” Mortimer added. “I’m not cutting my hair, Carole. It’s not happening.”

Persisting, Radziwill insisted that Mortimer needed to reinvent herself. “If I was coming back to New York having been the ‘It’ girl, I would totally reinvent myself. Cut my hair, put some low lights in it. You can’t have the same curls you had when you were 28 and date the same boys and live the same lifestyle. You have to reinvent yourself,” she said.

But Mortimer wasn’t budging. “I’m not changing my look,” she later told the audience during a confessional. “I’ve had enough change in my life, especially last year. I’m not changing it. I like my curls, I like my lashes, I like my party dresses, I like my blonde hair, I like my long hair. I’m not changing.”

RELATED: Real Housewives of New York City‘s Tinsley Mortimer on Moving On After Her Humiliating Arrest and Violent Relationship: ‘I Still Believe in Love’

But there is one thing about Mortimer’s hairstyle that likely won’t change — her hair color.

I haven’t seen my natural hair color in 20 years,” the reality star told The New York Times in 2017, crediting her stylist Kylie White for her trademark color, which he described to the newspaper as “multitonal — a soft baby blond with a golden blond base; she has icy and buttery pieces.”

“Being blond just makes me feel happier, like when the sun’s hitting you,” Mortimer added. “The blond pops. It’s cheerful.”

The Real Housewives of New York City’s 10th anniversary season premieres April 4 (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Snapchat Stock Drops $800 Million After Rihanna Condemned Ad Making Light of Domestic Violence

Less than a month after Kylie Jenner sent Snapchat stock into a downward spiral, another celebrity slam on the photo-sharing app has seemingly caused the company to take a major hit.

The stock prices of Snap Inc. fell around 4 percent on Thursday, reported CNN. The dip came after Rihanna responded to the app’s apology for running an ad for a game called “Would You Rather” asking users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch her ex Chris Brown, alluding to a 2009 domestic violence incident. The market value of the app’s parent company dropped almost $ 800 million, according to the outlet.

On Friday, Snap’s stock fell another 1 percent, CNN reported.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel’s personal net worth dropped $ 150 million due to the decease, according to Forbes. He is currently worth an estimated $ 3.8 billion, Forbes reported.

In 2009, Rihanna’s then-boyfriend Brown physically assaulted her in his car ahead of a Grammys party.

Brown, now 28, was charged with two felony counts — assault and making criminal threats — and the exes reached a plea agreement that spared Brown jail time after he pleaded guilty to felony assault by means likely to cause great bodily injury.

After the social media app apologized on Tuesday for running the since-pulled ad, Rihanna responded via Instagram on Thursday.

“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!” the 30-year-old singer wrote in an Instagram Story.

“You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down!” Rihanna’s post continued.

“Shame on you,” she added. “Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

A lawyer for the Brown shared the following statement with PEOPLE: “Whoever conceived this at Snap Chat needs to be slapped.”

“This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again,” Snapchat said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

After removing the ad from the app on Tuesday, Snapchat also released the following statement to the BBC: “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”

Last month, Snapchat’s stock dropped $ 1.3 billion in market value, according to Time, after Jenner revealed to her followers that she no longer opens the app.

The outlet also reported Wall Street analyst Mark May downgraded the stock to sell from neutral after the app’s redesign sparked negative reviews from users.

Vanderpump Rules’ Lala Kent Tones Down Plastic Surgery After Comparing Herself to a ‘Walking Cat-Duck’

The Vanderpump Rules cast rarely holds back. Whether they’re admitting their last hook-up or showing their plastic surgery results on-air, they remain the most candid cast on reality TV. And Lala Kent just opened up about the latter when she revealed why she’s taking a break from getting injections.

Even though she “loves” plastic surgery (and admitted to getting her breasts done) she says she needs to cool off on a few procedures. “I feel there have been times where I completely over-do it,” she told PEOPLE during our “5 Questions” video series, above.

“So I’ve had every part of my face injected,” Kent revealed. “The things I’ve decided to stop doing is the filler in the cheekbones, the Botox above the eyebrow and the lips because I just feel like I’m a walking cat-duck. It looks like a cat and a duck had a baby and that’s me.”

The only places she will get injected now are her jawline, chin and forehead. “But hey, if you like injections and you like plastic surgery I feel like, if you feel comfortable and you feel beautiful, than do you boo.”

All season, Kent has been spreading this strong message of body positivity every time she’s on screen. Whether she’s helping Ariana Madix work through body image issues or pumping up her friends when they were trying on risqué outfits, she’s been spreading good vibes wherever she goes. So how can we channel Kent’s confidence everywhere we go?

“I think just sitting there and going, ‘You know what, this is my body and I love it and I could change it tomorrow or I could leave it the way it is and I just think women are gorgeous,’” she said. “The female body, there’s nothing hotter. So reveal that.”

Lucy Liu Wants to #BringArtBackToSchools After Her Childhood Passion Changed Her Life

Lucy Liu has school art programs to thank for her success as an actress.

The Kill Bill star, 49, tells PEOPLE she mined her creativity by exploring her artistic hobbies at school. Growing up, Liu says, her parents didn’t encourage art in their home. The only time she could explore that side of herself, she says, was in school.

“It actually changed my life completely because since we were so math and science oriented,” she recalls. “When I started to get involved and do art on my own and at school in those programs, I was able to understand that I really wanted to have a creative life. Once I graduated from school I obviously pursued that and continued to pursue it even though my parents were not thrilled about that.”

That’s why Liu says she is partnering up with LIFEWTR, the premium bottled water company, and the brand’s “Arts in Education Series” on Arts Advocacy Day to drive conversation around the importance of arts in education and help #BringArtBackToSchools. On Monday, the actress posted about the campaign to her Instagram alongside a message on how her fans can get involved and help their local schools receive free art kits from LIFEWTR.

“Today, @LIFEWTR is announcing a commitment to reach one million students nationwide in the next year through curated curriculum, distribution of art supplies and local partnerships to champion this cause and inspire the next generation of artists like myself,” she wrote. “Please join me and share your story about how art has had a positive impact on you or someone you know, zip code and #BringArtBackToSchools. They’ll be donating art kits to classrooms in select schools across the country.”

The initiative combines two of the things Liu is most passionate about. As a mom herself to 2-and-a-half-year-old Rockwell Lloyd, the Elementary actress says it’s important to make sure kids explore their creativity when young.

“I have a few focuses. One of them is children, the other one is art and the other one is acting,” Liu says. “With kids especially, there’s a certain freedom that they have with the way they express themselves and that’s what we should tap into now. And what I love about what LIFEWTR is doing is they’re advocating for that and they’re advocating for people to have an opportunity to discover themselves as artists and to inspire other people.”
