Coconut Oil Called ‘Pure Poison’ by Harvard Professor Who Warns Against Its Supposed Benefits

Coconut oil is under fire again.

The controversial food started gaining popularity in 2011 for its supposed promise of supporting the immune system and helping people lose weight, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Coconut oil has, however, fallen from grace in recent years as some health experts have spoken out against it. Sales of the ingredient reportedly fell in 2017.

In one particularly harsh criticism, Dr. Karin Michels, an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, repeatedly called coconut oil “poison” in a German talk she gave titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors,” USA Today reported.

A video of her speech was posted in July and has been viewed more than 900,000 views on YouTube.

RELATED: 12 Ways Stars Use Coconut Oil in Their Beauty Routines

“I can only warn you urgently about coconut oil,” Michels said. “This is one of the worst foods you can eat.”

According to Business Insider, Michels said that coconut oil is more harmful than lard because of its saturated fatty acids, which can clog coronary arteries.

Dr. Frank Sacks, a nutrition professor at the Harvard Chan School, explained the ramifications of consuming saturated fatty acids to The Boston Globe: “Coconut oil is very high in saturated fat, and that raises your LDL cholesterol — bad cholesterol,” he said. “It’s unhealthy to be eating it.”

Several experts agree with Michels’ and Sacks’ assessments.

In The New York TimesDr. Alice H. Lichtenstein, a Tufts professor of nutrition science and policy, noted that “there’s virtually no data to support the hype” of coconut oil as a healthy ingredient.

RELATED: Celebs Swear By Coconut Oil — Here Are Six Beauty Items You Need Right Now

Lichtenstein said that “there appears to be no independent benefit of consuming it,” although research about coconut oil’s impact on the body is limited.

CNN reports that a 2016 study found that 72% of Americans — but only 37% of nutritionists — believe that coconut oil is healthy.

Dr. Tom Brenna, a Cornell professor of human nutrition, told The New York Times, “If you’re going to use coconut oil, make sure you get virgin oil … And, of course, everything in moderation.”

EXCLUSIVE: Model Christopher Cates Pens Letter Calling for Action Against Harassment

As the uproar continues over sexual harassment in industries stretching from entertainment to media to finance, the fashion world has remained relatively on the sidelines – until now.
On Saturday, The New York Times published a long-rumored story about alleged harassment of male models by the photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino. Both men, via statements their lawyers gave to the Times, vigorously denied the allegations made in the story, although Conde Nast and Conde Nast International both said Saturday that they would be severing ties with the two photographers – at least for now.
The Times’ story comes several months after model Cameron Russell created an Instagram account on which anonymous individuals posted stories about their mistreatment in the industry. Last October, Terry Richardson was dropped by the leading fashion magazine publishers but only after years of allegations surrounding his behavior, while model Jason Boyce filed a lawsuit against Weber in December claiming the photographer harassed him. Weber has denied those claims, as well.
In November, 27-year-old British model Edie Campbell penned an exclusive letter for WWD to the fashion industry in which she said, “We operate within a culture that is too accepting of abuse, in all of its manifestations,” going

Dressember Puts Dresses to Work Against Sex Trafficking

Many people go through rotations of dresses every December for countless holiday and New Year’s parties, but for those participating in Dressember, getting dolled up comes with a dose of do-gooding.
“Dressember is an annual campaign where people wear dresses every day during the month of December as a way to raise awareness and money for anti-trafficking organizations,” the organization’s co-founder and chief executive officer Blythe Hill explains. “We focus specifically on sex trafficking, but there are all forms of trafficking as well that go into it. “
Hill got the idea for the dress-a-day style challenge in college, and later connected it with her passion for eradicating sex trafficking.
“There are more people alive today in slavery than ever before in history – the numbers are upwards of 36 million people. It’s a $ 150 billion industry and the vast majority of people trapped in trafficking are women and girls. It’s one of the fastest growing criminal industries,” she says. “When I started hearing about it I was in college and I just felt this immediate urgency to do something about it. At the time, I was an English major and didn’t know [what to do]. I was like, ‘ok, should

Jessica Chastain Praises Salma Hayek for Speaking Out Against Harvey Weinstein

Jessica Chastain is praising Salma Hayek for speaking out against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

After retweeting the actress’s op-ed in the New York Times, in which Hayek detailed alleged harassment by the producer, Chastain told recounted her alleged experiences with Weinstein through the course of the making of the 2002 Miramax Frida Kahlo biopic Frida — claiming, among other things, that he had once threatened to kill her when she refused his advances.

“What I got from that article is: Man, Salma Hayek, not only is she an incredible actress … but what a great producer she is,” Chastain told the outlet from the New York City premiere of her new film Molly’s Game. “Reading all those hoops she was jumping through, how she got her movie made. I thank goodness for her and I’m so grateful she is in our industry. I hope that what’s happening now will create lasting change for more artists like Salma Hayek to have an opportunity to tell stories.”

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Weinstein denied “all of the sexual allegations as portrayed by Salma” — though the movie mogul admitted to “boorish behavior.” Addressing a slew of claims levied against him by Hayek, Weinstein said he had to fight to cast Hayek as the lead Frida over Jennifer Lopez, and said any tension on set helped make the film better.

“Mr. Weinstein regards Salma Hayek as a first-class actress and cast her in several of his movies, among them Once Upon a Time in MexicoDogma, and Studio 54. He was very proud of her Best Actress Academy Award nomination for Frida and continues to support her work,” read the statement.

In her op-ed, Hayek said Weinstein demanded the actress to do a sex scene with another woman with full-frontal nudity, which she said led to her having a “nervous breakdown” on set.

Weinstein denies the allegation and said the scene was choreographed by Hayek herself.

“Mr. Weinstein does not recall pressuring Salma to do a gratuitous sex scene with a female costar and he was not there for the filming,” read the statement. “However, that was part of the story, as Frida Kahlo was bisexual and the more significant sex scene in the movie was choreographed by Ms. Hayek with Geoffrey Rush. The original uni-brow used was an issue because it diverted attention from the performances.”

RELATED: Salma Hayek Claims ‘Monster’ Harvey Weinstein Threatened to Kill Her If She Refused His Demands

Hayek also included a list of sexual advances she claims Weinstein made against her over the course of filming.

“All of the sexual allegations as portrayed by Salma are not accurate and others who witnessed the events have a different account of what transpired,” said Weinstein in the statement.

Over 50 women have accused Weinstein, 65, of sexual misconduct since The New York Times and The New Yorker documented decades of alleged sexual misconduct and sexual assault involving a number of women in detailed articles in October.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Weinstein’s attorneys, Berk and Brafman, previously said: “Mr. Weinstein has never at any time committed an act of sexual assault, and it is wrong and irresponsible to conflate claims of impolitic behavior or consensual sexual contact later regretted, with an untrue claim of criminal conduct. There is a wide canyon between mere allegation and truth, and we are confident that any sober calculation of the facts will prove no legal wrongdoing occurred.

“Nonetheless, to those offended by Mr. Weinstein’s behavior, he remains deeply apologetic.”

Molly’s Game hits theaters Dec. 25.

Dsquared2 to Launch Capsule Collection Against Online Bullying

MILAN — Dsquared2 founders and creative directors Dean and Dan Caten will launch a capsule collection in partnership with the cyber antibullying movement “Be Cool Be Nice.” A portion of the profits from the sale of the graphic lineup of apparel and accessories will go toward the foundation, which aims to stop online bullying of young adults and children.
“Online bullying is a powerful and scary issue that can have a lasting, negative impact on young people’s lives,” said Dean Caten. “We were bullied as kids and we understand how destructive it is,” added Dan Caten. The designers revealed they immediately joined the cause as “it’s important to give kids and teenagers who are forming their personalities space to discover themselves without judgment, criticism and hate.”
The capsule collection — which includes denim, sweatshirts, T-shirts, baseball caps, high-heeled sandals for women and sneakers for men — was conceived to channel “an attitude of strength, confidence and positivity.” Every item features the name of the foundation and the logo of the brand, contrasting the garment’s classic color palette of black, gray and white.

Kim Kardashian West Defends Herself Against Mommy Shamers Over Son Saint’s Car Seat: He ‘Weighs More Than North’

Kim Kardashian West is fighting back against mommy shamers.

On Thursday, the reality star addressed some of the recent online attacks directed at her about the way she has been parenting son Saint, 20 months, and daughter North, 4, via a video on her website.

The mom of two said that one of the photos she posted on Facebook of her younger child caused a whirlwind on social media because Saint was not rear-facing in his car seat.

“What people didn’t know is that Saint is now the weight and height requirement to sit forward-facing,” Kardashian West, 36, says in the video. “Saint actually weighs more than North, if that is believable.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents are advised “to keep their toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat.” In the state of California, children under 2 must use a rear-facing seat unless they are at least 40 inches tall and weigh at least 40 lbs.

In the same video, Kardashian West also addresses claims that she has “obsessive plans to build empire.”

“I love her experiencing my life and what goes on. But I also love her having such a childhood life,” the mobile mogul tells her viewers of her daughter. “Whatever she wants to do I’ll support that. No matter what it is.”

Kardashian West admits that she does have an expensive diaper bag for Saint, though — which cashes in at a staggering $ 23,000.

The large tote is an old Birkin that she’d initially wanted “so badly” for herself, but was too big for her day-to-day, so she decided it would be “perfect” to use for Saint, she explains.

“It was my first Birkin bag that I ever bought and you would never really buy that huge size,” says Kardashian West. “But that’s all they had and I just wanted one so badly. I’d saved and saved and that’s all they had and I took it and I could never use it.”

She adds, “When I got pregnant I was like, ‘Perfect, I’ll use this as a diaper bag.’ “

‘Smurfs’ Struggles In Weekend Box Office Up Against ‘Boss Baby’

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – The Smurfs may be feeling kind of blue.

The cuddly creatures’ once-promising film franchise is looking awfully creaky after “Smurfs: The Lost Village” stumbled at the domestic box office this weekend. The Sony release opened to a negligible $ 14.1 million. The film was an attempt to reinvigorate the series after 2013’s “The Smurfs 2” racked up a disappointing $ 347.5 million on a hefty $ 105 million budget. It’s a fall from quite a height. The first film, 2011’s “The Smurfs,” had showed such promise, grossing $ 563.7 million globally, but interest in the big screen adventures of the creatures has waned with each sequel.

With the Smurfs failing to generate much excitement, DreamWorks Animation and Fox’s “The Boss Baby” captured first place at the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend, earning $ 26.3 million to push its domestic haul to $ 89.4 million. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” came in second, pulling in $ 25 million to push its stateside grosses to a lordly $ 432.3 million.

Box office analysts blame the glut of family titles for hobbling the Smurfs. “They should have waited a few weeks to open it,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations.

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=58e7a3fee4b00de14102bf5d

Bock was ready to write the obituary for the franchise, saying, “A major studio does not open an animated film at $ 14 million and expect to have a sequel.”

This weekend is something of a throat clearing for the industry. “The Fate of the Furious,” the latest chapter in Universal’s long-running chronicle of vehicular carnage, is slated to roar into theaters next Friday. It should dominate ticket sales, racking up an $ 100 million debut and keeping Vin Diesel in designer tank tops for the foreseeable future.

“It’s looming large on the horizon,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “It’s going to be a monstrous debut.”

New Line and Village Roadshow’s “Going in Style” took fourth place with $ 12.5 million. The comedy about three retirees who rob a bank stars Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, and Michael Caine. It’s a low-budget remake of a 1979 comedy of the same name and cost $ 24 million to produce. The film resonated with older crowds, with 72% of the audience clocking in over the age of 50.

“The chemistry of the three guys really works together,” said Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution chief at Warner Bros., New Line’s studio parent company. “They have fun together and it shows. It was a core part of the film’s appeal.”

Paramount’s “Ghost in the Shell” rounded out the top five, grossing $ 7.3 million to bring its domestic gross to a disastrous $ 31.6 million. The Japanese manga adaptation is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest bombs. Dogged by “whitewashing” controversy after Scarlett Johansson nabbed a part intended for an Asian actress, “Ghost in the Shell” won’t stand a chance of recouping its $ 110 million production budget.

Sony isn’t ready to wave the white flag on the Smurfs. The studio notes that the previous two films earned more than 70% of their gross from foreign markets. The studio is also pleased with the film’s A CinemaScore, a sign that audiences are responding to the picture.

“We delivered a film that I think is the best yet,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s domestic distribution chief. “Word-of-mouth should be strong.”

Sony also reined in costs. “Smurfs: The Lost Village” has a $ 60 million production budget, a fraction of the previous two entries’ price tag. However, the weak result extends a punishing period for Sony. The studio has been dogged by bombs such as “Life” and “Inferno,” while highly anticipated releases such as “Passengers,” a science-fiction romance with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, struggled to turn a profit.

In limited release, “Their Finest” opened on four screens in New York and Los Angeles to $ 77,000 for a per-screen average of $ 19,250. The comedy is set in World War II-era London and follows a troop of propaganda filmmakers. EuropaCorp bought the picture out of the Toronto Film Festival ― STX is distributing “Their Finest” on its behalf.

Neon, a new label from Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League and indie veteran Tom Quinn, debuted “Colossal” to $ 125,809 from four theaters. The off-beat monster movie stars Anne Hathaway and enjoyed a solid $ 31,452 per-screen average.

Overall ticket sales were up more than 15% on the prior-year period. Last year at this time Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” topped charts with a $ 23.6 million bow. Thanks to hits such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Logan,” 2017 continues to outpace 2016, with revenues up 5%.

Let’s Not Pit British And American Black Actors Against Each Other

Do black British actors “steal” roles from African-American actors?

On Thursday, Samuel L. Jackson sparked this debate in an interview on Hot.97, where he talked about Jordan Peele’s social horror “Get Out,” and questioned how the movie might have been different had the lead black character been played by an American actor, instead of British actor Daniel Kaluuya.

“Daniel grew up in a country where they’ve been interracial dating for 100 years,” Jackson said. “What would a brother from America have made of that role? Some things are universal but [not everything].”

Jackson’s comments drew instant criticism from some people online, including British-Nigerian actor John Boyega who tweeted:

Others weighed in:

Jackson clarified his comments later that day, insisting that he wasn’t trying to slam black British actors, but rather callout the Hollywood machine, which he believes hires Brits because they’re cheaper and “classically trained” at British institutions like RADA.

“I don’t know what the love affair is with all that,” Jackson told The Associated Press.

So, are black British actors actually “stealing” acting jobs away from African-American stars? Of course not, but the situation is still complicated. It’s true that some things are not “universal” for all black actors, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.

David Oyelowo told NPR in 2014 that, part of the reason Ava DuVernay cast him as Martin Luther King, Jr. in “Selma” was the fact that he was British, and thus would go into the role with less “baggage” than a black American actor.

The line between which black actors can play which roles is far hazier than, say, the idea of a white actor playing an iconic black character. After all, just as black British actors like Chiwitel Ejiofor and Idris Elba have played black Americans on screen, American actors like Don Cheadle, Denzel Washington, and Forest Whitaker have played British characters. And what about African characters?

There have been at least five movies and a mini-series made about Nelson Mandela ― none of the actors who played him (Danny Glover, Terrence Howard, Idris Elba, Morgan Freeman, Laurence Fishburne) were South African. Should we draw a line there as well? Is it OK that African-born actors rarely get cast in African parts?

This situation is far too complex to start pointing fingers and tallying up all the times a black Brit played an African-American and all the times an African-American played a brit. Because this all boils down to the politics of the entertainment industry, both in America and the U.K.

As Idris Elba explained in an address to the British Parliament last year, there is a dearth of proper, meaty roles for black actors in the U.K. So many of them go to New York or Los Angeles for better opportunities. Indeed, Elba, David Oyelowo and John Boyega did not see their careers begin to truly flourish until they each made crossovers in American films.

And as Jackson pointed out in his radio interview on Thursday, these actors tend to cost studios less to hire ― studios which also, according to Jackson, exotify these actors because of their training.

“They think they’re better trained, for some reason, than we are because they’re ‘classically’ trained,” Jackson explained.

This clash has a lot to do with the subtle forces of class and respectability politics, which have worked to divide those in the diaspora for decades upon decades. It’s all a question of inclusion, representation, and what opportunities are being afforded to actors of all kinds. Hollywood is still racist, and its racism manifests itself in many ways.

The most damaging way, of course, is that there still continues to be too few roles for a wide pool of talented actors, and the big roles generally only go to those established black actors (like Samuel L. Jackson) who’ve put in 10, 20, even 40 years in the game. A white American actor of Jackson’s stature would probably have a very different perspective about being up for a role against, say, Benedict Cumberbatch, because there would probably be 20 more good roles out there waiting for him.

The debate surrounding context and history and how that affects a black actor’s performance certainly isn’t a useless one. Thinking about how an American actor like, say, Michael B. Jordan would have played in “Get Out” is interesting to think about, but it doesn’t make Kaluuya’s performance any less profound.

Matt Damon Speaks Out Against Donald Trump’s Proposed Border Wall

Matt Damon, star of the upcoming movie “The Great Wall,” isn’t really “a believer in walls.” Specifically, walls proposed by President Donald Trump

In a new interview with People, Damon spoke out about the president’s plan to erect a wall between the United States and Mexico, as well as Trump’s idea that Mexico will pay for it

“I believe that history belongs to the cooperators,” the actor said, before noting that he doesn’t think “Mexico is going to pay for our infrastructure any more than we’re going to pay for their highways, you know what I mean? That’s just not going to happen. But, that’s where we are and we’ll see how it all plays out.”

Damon continued, “Hopefully the people of Mexico understand that the people of our country, the majority of them, don’t believe that we should be putting any walls up.”

When Trump was campaigning for the presidency, Damon expressed his discontent over the possibility of seeing the former “Apprentice” host in the White House.

“I’m kind of amazed we’ve arrived at this point,” he said during a 2016 interview with ABC News’ “Popcorn with Peter Travers. “I’m concerned.”

“There’s no way we can let this guy be the [president],” he added. “To let that dude have the nuclear football, are you kidding me? That’s dangerous. He’s impulsive and rash, and doesn’t seem to think deeply about too many things.”

Following Trump’s election, however, Damon, took on a more diplomatic tone. The actor, who has openly admitted he didn’t vote for the Republican candidate, told NBC, “A successful American president is good for all of us and we really have to be rooting for him right now.”

Run-DMC Files $50 Million Lawsuit Against Amazon and Wal-Mart for Trademark Infringement

Attorneys for the Run-D.M.C. brand have filed a $ 50 million lawsuit against Amazon Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Co., Jet.com and a few other outlets for trademark infringement and trademark dilution, among other things.
First reported by TMZ Thursday, the legal filing was made in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The complaint, which includes numerous images of Run-D.M.C.-inspired products as they appeared on Amazon’s and Wal-Mart’s respective sites, alleges that the retailers are advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple Run-D.M.C. styled products. Eyewear, hats, T-shirts, wallets and patches are among the items referenced, some of which are said to use the Run-D.M.C. trademark. The complaint charges that the products being sold “confuse the public and suggest that Run-D.M.C. endorses the products.”
Homegrown in Hollis, Queens by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, Run-D.M.C. helped define hip hop culture in the Eighties. Mizell, better known as “Jam Master Jay,” was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens in 2002. Simmons, whose brother is the serial entrepreneur Russell, is widely recognized as “Reverend Run.”
Run-D.M.C. has a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The lawsuit claims that the Run-D.M.C. brand has produced revenue in excess

Perrin Paris Files Lawsuit Against Philipp Plein

IN THE CLUTCH: Leather-goods maker Perrin Paris has filed a lawsuit against luxury sportswear firm Philipp Plein, requesting an injunction and significant damages for infringing its so-called “glove-clutch,” a design-patented model that the French firm describes as a marriage between its glove-making heritage and modern chic. The suit is pending at a court in Hamburg, Germany, Perrin Paris said.
Perrin Paris alleges that the Lugano, Switzerland-based firm known for its bejeweled leather and crystal-studded knits copied its Eiffel model glove-clutch. “It’s the exact duplicate, same size, same design, same concept — the hand receiving portion of our bags that we design-patented. They only added a skull,” said Michel Perrin, whose great-great grandmother founded the company in Saint-Junien with gloves as its core business.
Julie Macklowe carried the Philipp Plein clutch on the red carpet at the Met Gala in May.
“In the beginning, we contacted Philipp Plein out of court asking him to stop selling it. We were given the impression that they would remove it from distribution. But recently, we realized that they were continuing to sell them in their outlet stores, at a discounted price,” Perrin explained.
Before the defense was due in court, he said, the German firm contacted Perrin Paris asking for a settlement offer, which

Appelate Court Tosses Out LVMH’s Claim Against Spoof Brand My Other Bag

GOOD HUMOR: LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has lost its legal fight against spoof tote bag company My Other Bag. On Dec. 22, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit tossed out the luxury conglomerate’s appeal from a judgment of the United States District Court for New York State’s southern district.
In January 2016, Judge Jesse M. Furman had struck down the luxury conglomerate’s formal allegations of trademark dilution, violation of fair use, dilution by blurring, trademark infringement and copyright infringement. The firm first filed these claims against My Other Bag in 2014.
In its summary order, which affirmed the judgment of the district court, the Second Circuit said that “obvious differences in My Other Bag’s mimicking of Louis Vuitton’s mark, the lack of market proximity between the products at issue, and minimal, unconvincing evidence of consumer confusion compel a judgment in favor of My Other Bag on Louis Vuitton’s trademark infringement claim.”
On the trademark dilution claim, it said: “At the same time that they mimic Louis Vuitton’s designs and handbags in a way that is recognizable, they do so as a drawing on a product that is such a conscious departure from Louis Vuitton’s image of luxury — in

Pope Francis Speaks Out Against the Commercialization of Christmas in Midnight Mass

Pope Francis led the annual Christmas Eve Mass, known as the Midnight Mass, in a packed St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday.

To ring in Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Sistine Chapel choir sang “Gloria” and the basilica’s bells rang out across Rome.

In his homily, Francis urged his flock to reflect on how children today aren’t always allowed to lie peacefully in a cot, loved by their parents as Jesus was, but rather “suffer the squalid mangers that devour dignity,” according to the Associated Press.

“Let us allow ourselves to be challenged by the children who are not allowed to be born, by those who cry because no one satiates their hunger, by those who do have not toys in their hands, but rather weapons,” he said.

Alessandra Tarantino/AP

In another appeal, Francis called for the faithful to not get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas – “when we are concerned for gifts but cold toward those who are marginalized.” Materialism has “taken us hostage this Christmas,” he said. “We have to free ourselves of it!”

The Pope, who celebrated his 80th birthday last week, delivered Christmas greetings to Vatican employees and their families on Thursday, according to Vatican Radio.

Saturday’s late night Mass, which was live streamed at 3:15 p.m. ET, was the first major event of the Christmas season, followed by the Pope’s noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day.

Soccer Player Punished For Giving Middle Finger Files Lawsuit Against UConn

Noriana Radwan was an 18-year-old freshman soccer player at the University of Connecticut when her team won the 2014 American Athletic Conference championship game.

An ESPNU television camera focused on Radwan as she cheered and hugged her teammates on the field, and she enthusiastically threw up her left middle finger. She never imagined this one gesture ― for which she says she has since “profusely apologized” ― would destroy her career as a UConnn student-athlete.

A few weeks after the incident, then-head coach Len Tsantiris called Radwan to let her know her scholarship would be terminated mid-year for what he called a “serious misconduct issue.”

Nearly two years after that phone call, Radwan is still fighting back.

She announced at a press conference on Monday that she’s filing a lawsuit against UConn and three people associated with the decision to end her scholarship: Tsantiris, the university’s former athletic director and the director of student financial aid.

Radwan’s layer, Greg Tarone, said UConn and the involved individuals violated his client’s First Amendment rights and the NCAA Division I bylaws.

Radwan is asking the school for financial retribution, The Associated Press reports

“I loved UConn, but I lost faith in it as an institution when it allowed my scholarship to be illegally taken away so abruptly and crassly in the middle of the school year,” Radwan said. “Nobody should have to go through what I have gone through in the past two years. Only litigation will stop it.”

Watch the press conference below:

Tarone called UConn’s termination of Radwan’s scholarship “atrocious,” and said he believes sexism played a role in the university’s decision.

“We’re here because she’s a female student-athlete who was treated differently than male student-athletes at UConn by the institution,” Tarone said. “One misguided individual, Coach Tsantiris, led the way for a couple of others to complicity violate her civil rights.”

He cited several recent incidents involving male UConn student-athletes who received little to no disciplinary action from the university despite having been accused of more “serious misconduct” than Radwan.

For example, a freshman football player named Brian Cespedes was charged last week with misdemeanor assault and breach of peace for his involvement in an off-campus fight in September. UConn spokesman Kyle Muncy told the New Haven Register that the coaching staff was “made aware of the incident and addressed it,” but that Cespedes had not been kicked off the team.

A photo posted by Hofstra University (@hofstrau) on

Tarone said he also believes Tsantiris was motivated to remove Radwan from his team to free up scholarship money and make room for then-Notre Dame mid-fielder Morgan Andrews. (Andrews ended up choosing to play at the University of Southern California.)

Tarone said a section of the NCAA bylaws does permit a school to cancel a scholarship mid-year for “serious misconduct,” but that this type of misconduct is undefined.

“A common sense applied to the word ‘serious’ means misconduct that would that would significantly worry or cause injury to somebody,” Tarone said. “Noriana’s [gesture] could not possibly be characterized in the same realm of unacceptable conduct by a student-athlete on any campus in this country ― none.”

Radwan, who is currently playing for Hofstra University after receiving a partial athletic scholarship, said the psychological and emotional agony of being kicked off UConn’s team had been “overwhelming.”

“Please understand that I did not intend to offend anyone,” Radwan said. “I was making a celebratory statement that was seriously misinterpreted and misjudged.”

UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz told the AP that the school had not seen the lawsuit and wasn’t able to comment on it because of federal privacy laws.

“In an excited moment, as an 18-year-old after winning her first championship, her one little mistake cost her everything,” Tarone said. “Loyalists to the UConn Huskies brand should ask themselves if they want this to happen to their daughter.”

Martin Greenfield Files Lawsuit Against Brooks Brothers

There’s a bespoke battle brewing.
Martin Greenfield Clothiers Ltd. has filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Brooks Brothers, charging that the retailer broke its manufacturing agreement with the Brooklyn-based tailor for its Golden Fleece made-to-measure collection.
According to a suit filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Kings County on Monday, Brooks Brothers unilaterally terminated its exclusive manufacturing agreement with Martin Greenfield on Nov. 1, 2014, “without adhering to the one-year notice of termination stipulated in the agreement.”
As a result, the lawsuit alleges, Greenfield sustained significant loss of revenue and other costs, “such as inability to notify its union labor force of the changed circumstances and reduce its manufacturing capability, as well as seek other work to meet its expenses.”
The suit is seeking $ 1.9 million in compensatory damages, lost revenue and other damages, according to Mark E. Seitelman, Greenfield’s attorney.
In response to a request for comment, Brooks Brothers said: “We do not comment on legal matters.”
According to Seitelman, after Brooks Brothers purchased the Southwick manufacturing facility in Massachusetts in 2007, it made clear that it eventually intended to bring the manufacturing in-house. However, the plant was not ready and so Brooks Brothers continued to work with Greenfield on

Why Your Prescription Takes So Damn Long To Fill: A Foul-Mouthed, Liberal Pharmacist Breaks The Curse Of Christmas And Strikes Back Against

Phoning the competitor, I am immediately put on hold for 5 minutes before speaking to a clerk, who puts me back on hold to wait for the pharmacist. Your prescription is then transferred to me, and now I have to get the 2 phone calls that have been put on hold while this was being done. Now I return to the counter to ask if we’ve ever filled prescriptions for you before. For some reason, you think that “for you” means “for your cousin” and you answer my question with a “yes”, whereupon I go the computer and see you are not on file. The phone rings…” That’s part of the reason why your prescription takes so long to fill, and after almost 20 years of this, a question I was never quite able to answer loomed larger and larger each day: “Why did I get into this profession?” Cranky customers whose only questions seem to involve their insurance co-pays. Pointless paperwork. People begging for early narcotic refills. Staff cuts. That was my workday. The struggle to get people the medicine and information they needed seemed almost futile at times. Then one day I got the answer. It hit me like a ton of bricks while driving home one spring evening along the California coast. I was born again, but it had nothing to do with Jesus. It did have a lot to do with a little plastic motorcycle. And I did become

The Many Beauty Secrets of Melania Trump (Spoiler: She’s ‘Against Botox’)

In case you didn’t know, Melania Trump is the most beautiful woman in the world. Well, at least according to her husband, presidential hopeful Donald Trump. But being that gorgeous and living up to The Donald’s exacting taste in women isn’t something that just happens, it’s something that must be carefully cultivated and maintained. So when GQ was granted an intimate, all-access interview with the designer and former model in which she reveals a handful of her beauty secrets, we sat up and took note.

Melania Trump Beauty Secrets GQKristina Bumphrey/Starpix/REX/Shutterstock

And Melania dished out the helpful info right from the get-go, starting with her headshot that accompanies the piece. How does she get that inner glow? A diet consisting entirely of diamonds, of course:

Just be warned, you might not want to try this one unless you also happen to be married to a real estate tycoon.

As for her outward glow, you can save your skin from the ravages of aging by skipping out on late night affairs:

“She is a homebody. She’s rich, but not a socialite; she prefers family to the It set and retires early after events.”

Putting on a full face of makeup every day is a duty, not a privilege:

“At an age when her classmates were pimply, casual high schoolers, Melania was always perfectly made up, recalls Sedej. Foundation, mascara, blush, lip gloss, all in just the right, subtle amount. ‘Even in summertime,’ she says, ‘she was always perfect, every day.’”

She also does a light workout daily (surely with bronzer and lashes fully intact) and even finds time to eat a piece of fruit or two between all those diamonds:

“In New York, Melania lived a quiet, homebound life, taking assiduous care of her body: walks with ankle weights, seven pieces of fruit every day, diligently moisturizing her skin.”

But really, at the end of the day, there’s just no substitute for good genes, not even Botox:

“Again, Melania scoffs when I ask if she had had a breast augmentation. “I didn’t make any changes,” she says. ‘A lot of people say I am using all the procedures for my face. I didn’t do anything. I live a healthy life, I take care of my skin and my body. I’m against Botox, I’m against injections; I think it’s damaging your face, damaging your nerves. It’s all me. I will age gracefully, as my mom does.’”

What do you think of all of Melania’s beauty secrets? Sound off below!

John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

Check it out in the clip above.

The Grand Conspiracy Against Publishing Your Book

Here’s what I believed when I was trying to get my first publishing deal:

There is a cabal of writers and publishers purposefully keeping me out. Every successful writer is part of this cabal. They know who I am and they hate what I write because it is too good and they feel threatened by me and my work. I’m just too brilliant. Too edgy. Too innovative and new.

Of course, I never verbalized this or said it in my head in this specific way or perhaps I would’ve realized how ridiculous and narcissistic and petty it sounds. But there was always a feeling of something being incredibly unfair, and if I give words to that feeling, then that is the feeling and those are the words, however delusional they may sound now. I never realized, at the time, how much comfort there was inside that feeling because it absolved me completely of any and all responsibility for my success or failure.

What did it matter how well I wrote? How hard I tried? Why bother rewriting anything? Why look for the cracks in what I’d already done? There was a vast conspiracy against me and my book and so, nothing was my fault. I was already perfect.

It is so incredibly tempting to take the power out of your own hands and put it in someone else’s. It’s terrifying to accept that what you write and how good it is, is ultimately up to you, because then you have to accept that maybe your first novel (all 80 000 words of it) isn’t good enough and maybe you have to start again from scratch. Maybe your writing hasn’t found an audience yet because, maybe, that audience doesn’t exist. Maybe the people who read it just don’t like it.

All those maybes are hard, painful things just to consider, let alone act upon. But the best writers I know not only entertain those thoughts, they sigh, roll their eyes and start again. They wake up feeling completely and utterly despondent, and then they go to work. The worst, on the other hand, often aren’t writers for long and if they are, they spend their time going to seminars and endlessly trawling through articles looking for tricks, for the right agent, publishing secrets and quick and easy tips — something, anything that doesn’t involve actually going back and doing the work — and it is work. Ask not for motivation. Ask for discipline.

Here’s the only real tip, trick or secret to writing:

You have to actually enjoy the act of writing, not the idea of being a writer, not the respect and awe you believe you’ll command as a writer, not the romance of tapping away at a typewriter or signing someone’s book — you have to love the numbing, horrible, finicky hard work of sitting there with sentences and paragraphs and pages, working out how to make each and every word sing its own song. The act of writing anything, a novel or a poem, is only slightly more pleasurable than it is laborious, and if you are a writer, you chase that little bit. You slave on, chasing. But if you’ve got that, then everything else stops mattering as much because that little, tiny bit is there every single time you sit down in front of a keyboard or a notepad. And it’s enough.

That’s it. It’s 2015. There are a million different ways to find your audience, if they exist. You just have to give them a good enough reason to, find you.

The plain and simple reality is it’s hard to get someone to read a book, let alone buy one. The process of becoming a writer, as a profession, is hard work and takes a long time and luckily, none of that matters if you enjoy the act of what you’re doing. And while sexism, racism and phobias of all kinds are real and terrible and should be revealed and stamped out wherever they’re found, all the writers and publishers I’ve met, didn’t have a single thing against me, or you.

And while that’s scary, it’s also really, really, really good news.

Good luck.

Nickelback Wanted By Australian Police For Crimes Against Music

Trashing Nickelback may be one of our great American pastimes, but this Australian police department just took hating the band to a whole new level.

The Queensland Police Service issued a tongue-in-cheek BOLO (Be On The Lookout) warning to locals via Facebook that the much maligned Canadian group would be bringing their crimes against music to the area. The faux wanted poster mocks the band for “impersonating musicians.”

Police are on the lookout for these men who are believed to be impersonating musicians around Boondall this…

Posted by Queensland Police Service on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The quartet has been widely seen as a musical public enemy for decades. They were once deemed the second worst rock band of the ’90s in Rolling Stone.

Despite the disdain, Nickelback is still going strong and played in Brisbane, Australia on Wednesday.

Elitist haters, the New York Times mused, might be what gives Nickelback “a foundation on which to build an enduring fan base in the shrunken marketplace of the digital age,” despite being slammed for a commercial, formulaic sound and insincere lyrics.

Based on frontman Chad Kroeger’s reaction to an online petition to ban the band from the United Kingdom last fall, we’d guess he isn’t sweating the Queensland police.

“All these critics, they’re just tireless,” he told The Pulse of Radio in October. “They keep ragging on the band. If they had stopped writing all this stuff about us, there would be no controversy left in the band and we probably would have died out years ago. They don’t know that they’re still responsible for us being around today.”

Someone Requested All Of The FCC Complaints Against ’30 Rock,’ And They’re Magical

Ain’t no filth like Liz Lemon filth.

Tiny Fey’s “30 Rock” ran for 138 episodes, garnering more than 100 Emmy nominations, but apparently it should’ve been taken off the air far sooner, thank you very much.

The fine people of MuckRock requested every FCC complaint lodged against the sitcom — there were only nine, but some viewers took strong offense to the “crap” broadcast by NBC.

Many people were upset with the show’s language, including moment’s where Fey’s character Liz Lemon “called someone a son of a bitch” and an unidentified actor said, “Kiss my daughter’s ass.” A particularly dismayed viewer was offended by the line “Have you been soaking your tampon in vodka?” and ended their complaint chastising the character Jenna Maroney for “kissing a man dressed as a woman.”

And of course the network sensation “MILF Island” was mentioned by a foul-mouthed complainer: “M-I-L-F is acronym for ‘Mother I’d Like to Fuck’ This is shameful … Where in the WORLD is the decency rules and why are they not being enforced.”

Maybe the network should’ve run with “Queen of Jordan” instead.

Take a full look at all of the complaints below:

Filmmaker Fights the Stigma Against Mental Illness

2015-03-14-1426349822-1318183-Directing.jpgThe best thing about the #MyMentalHealthStory campaign I launched in December of 2014 is I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people. In this interview, get to know filmmaker, Jeff Holiday. Here Jeff shares what inspired him to become a storyteller and how his family’s experience with mental illness and suicide has shaped the making of his short film, Boulevard.

Visit www.jeffholiday.com and www.boulevardthefilm.com to learn more about Jeff and his film.

Tell us about your background and film making experience.

My love for storytelling dates back to when I was very young. At age 12 my parents bought me my first video camera for Christmas. My friends and I would put together short little movies, commercials and stop motion videos, most of which are pretty embarrassing to watch now.

In 2005, right after my grandparents’ death, while at Floyd Central High School, I always wondered what was happening inside the school’s radio/TV room on my way to class. The following year I spent as much time as possible in that studio. Looking back, I was feeling lost and I used my ability to create things to deal with what was bothering me. This was just magnified after my grandparents’ death.

My experience in high school was great and led to me to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications at Ball State University (BSU) and by my senior year I became the Executive Producer on PBS’s Connections Live, an Emmy Award winning news magazine show. I’m currently completing my Master of Arts in Digital Storytelling at BSU and I’ll graduate this May.

Your latest film project, Boulevard, is set in the future where mental illness is a myth and suicide is a crime. The story is about a man named Nathan who loses of his wife to suicide and his journey to understand if he could have prevented her death. I have read this plot was inspired by the murder-suicide of your own grandparents, Wayne and Shelby Hinton, in May 2005. Do you feel the main character Nathan is patterned after you and your experiences?

Yes, the character Nathan is patterned after my life although Nathan’s circumstances are different from mine and Boulevard is a different story from my own. For me, I knew making this film would emulate my past because so much creativity is driven by those experiences. And even though I’ve wanted to tell a story about suicide for a long time, I was hesitant because I was afraid of what people might think. But I stopped caring about others judgments and realized this type of story needed to be told.

Have you personally encountered stigma as it relates to the death of your grandparents?

I’ve encountered the stigma too many times to count, for a longtime I just avoided the conversation altogether. Most of my college friends didn’t know about my grandparents’ death until I started working on Boulevard. In getting Boulevard off the ground, I shared my story with those who were working on the film. It was difficult to tell colleagues my grandfather committed suicide, but even harder to share how he took my grandmother’s life. I just didn’t know how to approach it at first. But the more I told my story, the easier it got and I eventually shared my story with everyone who I worked with.

What does your family think about this film project?

At first I was worried about what my family might think, but they have been extremely supportive of my efforts. The reason I can so easily speak about my experience is because my family has encouraged me to talk about it. The subject of mental illness and my grandparents’ death has never been a secret in my family. If a family member wishes to talk about it, they are not discouraged. When we get together, the topic always comes up because it is part of who we are now.

Your desire to fight the stigma around mental illness is admirable. With one million people who die annually by committing suicide, we still have much work to do. Can you discuss how this film will educate about mental illness?

My goal is to create a film that is entertaining but also educational and thought provoking. While Boulevard is just one perspective — my perspective — out of millions, I hope it can help start conversations about mental illness independent of whether a person is personally struggling or not. The message of Boulevard will be very clear; the stigma has gone on for too long and we must stop it. Start your own conversation.

Where are you in the process of producing and completing Boulevard?

We are currently in pre-production for Boulevard and have completed casting the main roles and we will start filming in April. Once the film is complete, I’ll take Boulevard to the film festival circuit for the attention it deserves. As for distribution, I’m working on finding a place, but I can assure you I’ll give it away for free if I have to. I didn’t create this film to make money.

Why should people see this movie?

I think people should see Boulevard because it’s a different take on the topic of mental illness. While I’ve worked extensively in documentary filmmaking, and believe in its ability to persuade and encourage social change, it does have its limitation in that the audience is often limited to those who are already aware of the stigma and the need for change. In other words, it is preaching to the choir. By creating a fictional film the audience begins to broaden, reaching those who are unaware of the stigma many face.

Is there anything else you want to share with readers?

People always ask me if I’d do anything to bring my grandparents back. Obviously yes, I’d give nearly anything to see them again. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized something; while I’d do anything to see them again — it’s hard to ignore how much I’ve learned and grown from my experiences after their deaths. They gave me a lot while they were alive, and I feel they continue to do so even now.
