Alabama Chanin Will Be Back in the City During New York Fashion Week

SOUTH OF THE CITY: After a nine-year break from New York Fashion Week, Alabama Chanin will be back on the scene with a private showing Sept. 4 to Sept. 7 at the Bowery Hotel.
The label’s namesake, Natalie Chanin, has been quietly building the sustainable-focused business in Florence, Ala. Committed to cultivating craftsmanship via the artisans and seamstresses that help to produce the collection, the company has been rooted in sustainable production for nearly 20 years. Its offerings are a combination of hand-sewn and machine-made garments. Chanin said, “It feels like our latest designs really stand out from work we’ve done in recent years, so it was important to us to join NYFW again. We’ve worked for many years now to build our manufacturing facility, improve our U.S.-based organic supply chain and develop these new designs.”
Chanin consults with other designers and brands such as Patagonia. For more than four years, the label has been working on a line of upcycled products using down jackets from Patagonia’s recycling program. Recently, Alabama Chanin has been exploring “the future of craft” with a major athletic company. “As our manufacturing capabilities have grown, so have the opportunities to work closely with established brands,” Chanin said.

Parents of Alleged Rape Victim Sue U. Alabama After She Kills Herself: ‘Tragic Yet Preventable Situation’

Megan Rondini was a 20-year-old premed student at the University of Alabama in July 2015 when her life changed.

That’s when Rondini, a junior, told friends that she had met a man at a popular bar in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. At some point in the evening, she alleged she was sexually assaulted at his home, possibly after being drugged.

According to her parents, Rondini went into a downward spiral after the alleged assault. They say she suffered depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. She withdrew from the University and returned home to Texas. In February 2016, she hanged herself.

Now Rondini’s parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against several people who they say failed her daughter. In the lawsuit, obtained by PEOPLE, Michael and Cynthia Rondini are suing their daughter’s alleged rapist, two university employees, the Tuscaloosa County sheriff, a sheriff’s deputy, and a sheriff’s office investigator.

The complaint alleges that the university did not give Rondini adequate psychological treatment and support after the incident. The suit says that specific University employees “deliberately and repeatedly denied services and mishandled accommodations with hostility.”

The suit also claims that the sheriff’s office inadequately pursued the investigation, and were sympathetic towards the alleged rapist rather than their daughter. The suit also claims that authorities focused on some of Rondini’s actions, including taking a handgun and cab fare from her alleged attacker’s home.

The Rondini’s attorney, Leroy Maxwell Jr., did not return PEOPLE’s call for comment, but told that the family hopes this lawsuit will prevent other families from going through the same thing. “The Rondini family is not in this for the money, they are only interested in shining a bright light on a tragic yet preventable situation,” Maxwell said in a statement. “The court will determine if this case rises to the level of punitive damages.”

Meanwhile, several entities are working together to strengthen their support of sex assault victims. The university is partnering with the nearby hospital, the District Attorney’s office and law enforcement to establish two victim advocacy programs to care for sexual assault victims. The organizations also said in a statement that they are retraining their staffs.

The University of Alabama has defended its actions. “When Megan went to the hospital, a university advocate met her at the hospital to provide support and stayed with her throughout the examination process,” the school said in a statement. “Megan also received information from university representatives regarding services available to her on campus, including counseling through the university’s Women & Gender Resource Center.”

The alleged attacker has not been charged with any crime. He and his lawyer did not return PEOPLE’s calls for comment.

Alabama Chanin Returning to Wholesale, Relaunching E-commerce This Fall

American made has been the bedrock of Natalie Chanin’s designs throughout her 17 years in business, and now the Alabama Chanin founder hopes her return to wholesaling will help to bolster her home state’s workforce. The fall launch will coincide with the brand’s new web site.
The designer still relies on local artisans in and around Florence, Ala., to create her hand-sewn designs — just as she did with her first company Project Alabama, which she left in 2006. At that time the birth of her daughter “just changed everything,” so she regrouped, left New York and returned to her home state of Alabama to launch Alabama Chanin.
With the capacity to scale up and its new machine-made collection, Alabama Chanin is returning to wholesale and aims to have 10 to 12 retailers this fall. In September, the company will introduce wovens and a full range of ribbed core pieces that are sewn locally. With a supply chain that is seed-to-shelf, the label’s cotton is sourced from Texas, processed in North Carolina and cut-and-sewn in Alabama. “It’s taken a long time to get there so we’re really proud of it,” Chanin said.
The company has always focused on Made in America and sustainability,

Donald Trump In Alabama: Bring It On

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Republican front-runner Donald Trump on Friday joked, “I know how Billy Graham felt” as he addressed the largest crowd yet of his thriving presidential campaign.

“I would like to have the election tomorrow,” Trump crowed. “I don’t want to wait.”

Thousands of Alabama voters came out to hear the New Yorker bring his message to the Deep South. The 40,000-seat Ladd-Peebles Stadium was about half-full when Trump began his speech.

Trump was welcomed by an array of Alabama politicians, including Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, who praised him for the attention he’s drawn to immigration issues. And Trump led off his speech with more criticism of immigrants living in the country illegally, drawing loud cheers when he repeated his promise to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

He reiterated his intention to end “birthright citizenship” for children of immigrants here illegally.

Trump also attacked the Obama administration’s deal with Iran to restrict that country’s nuclear program, calling it “so sad.”

And he promised to “repeal and replace Obamacare” — the health care law that’s President Barack Obama’s singular domestic achievement.

Before Trump arrived, his fans — some carrying signs, others wearing T-shirts supporting the billionaire businessman — spoke of his outsider status in a crowded field dominated by former and current elected officials as the song “Sweet Home Alabama” blared from loudspeakers.

”Donald Trump is telling the truth and people don’t always like that,” said Donald Kidd, a 73-year-old retired pipe welder from Mobile. “He is like George Wallace, he told the truth. It is the same thing.”

Wallace, a fierce opponent of civil rights, served as governor of Alabama and sought the presidency multiple times.

Kidd said Trump is a “breath of fresh air,” and praised him as a businessman with common sense.

Savannah Zimmerman, a 27-year-old registered nurse from Mobile, agreed. “I think he appeals to us Southerners because he tells it like it is and he has strong opinions. That is the way we are here in the South,” she said.

Mary Anne Bousenitz, 59, a retired psychiatrist from Tuscaloosa, said she isn’t offended by the insults Trump has directed at women, like “dog” and “bimbo.”

“I’m not married to the man and it’s not like I’m going to have to sit across a turkey at the table with him,” she said.

Interest in the candidate forced organizers to move a planned rally from the Mobile Civic Center, which holds about 2,000 people, to Ladd-Peebles Stadium, a 40,000-seat football stadium.

Before the rally, Trump tweeted: “We are going to have a wild time in Alabama tonight! Finally, the silent majority is back!”

During the height of the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon sought the backing of the “silent majority,” widely considered to be Americans who stood behind the Republican president and weren’t getting the attention that protesters attracted. Trump has derided elected officials and cast his candidacy as an outsider’s bid.

The Bush campaign on Friday night e-mailed thousands of supporters in Alabama, denouncing Trump as a Republican presidential candidate. The campaign statement said that Trump favors partial-birth abortions, supports restrictions on gun rights and backs laws that infringe on states’ land rights.

“Trump’s positions are deeply out of step with the Alabama way of life,” the campaign said in the email. “We know Alabama cherishes life, especially the life of the unborn.”

Right to Rise USA, the super PAC supporting Bush, tweeted photos of a plane, with a banner ad bashing Trump and promoting Bush, flying over the stadium, before Trump’s rally.
