Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2018

Sarah Burton played with contrasts for pre-fall, creating fragile, romantic looks and ones with a more tailored, urban edge. She juxtaposed androgynous tailoring with more decadent lace, knit and embroidered pieces, in a bid to create a “darkly romantic” mood. Long lace tiered tops were layered over tailored pants, while romantic printed dresses were paired with edgier leather harnesses. Blazers featured cutouts and lace appliqués. The collection also had touches of British art nouveau and with the patterns on a pleated silk dress recalling the inky lines of Aubrey Beardsley. The collection was filled with gossamer knit skirts and dresses, some with ruffles, and others with transparent panels that gave the garments a otherworldly look. The collection’s evening offer featured a series of high-shine sequined looks, including a floor-length chiffon gown delicately embroidered to create floral patterns.

Alexander McQueen, Givenchy to Open South Coast Plaza Boutiques

Alexander McQueen and Givenchy are the latest luxury brands to sign leases at South Coast Plaza. They are to join more than 250 boutiques at the retail center in late spring, and the McQueen boutique will be the only Orange County location for the brand (there is a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles), while the Givenchy boutique is a Southern California exclusive (it’s one brand that’s missing on Rodeo Drive).
Family-run South Coast Plaza, which the late Henry Segerstrom built into one of the most profitable retail centers in the world, with annual sales topping $ 1 billion, is already home to Dior, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Hermès and The Webster. Segerstrom was many times the first to bring European brands such as Courreges to the States. SCP this year celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Givenchy store at the Aventura Mall in Miami.

The McQueen boutique will be located on Level 2 of the center in the Nordstrom Wing, while the Givenchy boutique will be located on Level 2 near Jewel Court. The locations are significant because South Coast Plaza has more than 1 million feet of retail space, and customers often must park — or valet

Alexander McQueen Resort 2018

Inspired by English country gardens, Alexander McQueen’s resort outing was brimming with romance: Flowers were printed and embroidered on delicate chiffon mididresses, while knitwear and corseted gowns were designed to evoke caging. Juxtaposing the softer elements were slim suits done in a handwoven tweed, structured monochromatic blazers thrown over dresses and oversized trenchcoats. Embellishment was another key element. With the idea of family heirlooms in mind, Sarah Burton added heavy crystal embellishments in the shape of flowers on everything from gowns to knitwear, while suits were matched with statement necklaces.

The Second Season of Adidas Originals by Alexander Wang Is Coming

Adidas and Alexander Wang are launching the second season of their collaborative collection Adidas Originals by Alexander Wang July 29 in New York and globally August 5. “Ever unconventional, Adidas Originals and Wang return to disrupt fashion’s status quo, reinventing design, communication and retail,” reads a release from Adidas issued this morning, which also contained links to a short film directed by Ryan Staake to tease the collection. To summarize the plot of the one-minute, six-second film, a couple of bike messengers plaster some posters around town, pedal their way to a rave, presumably clad in the unisex collection — the statement piece being a florescent ski mask with three black stripes on it. They party all night and one of them passes out in a bed.  It’s hard to tell who the main bike messenger is, but whoever it is has long black hair and a slender build that brings to mind Wang himself.

The disrupting retail component is a text-to-buy checkout experience: Part of the launch is a wilding posting campaign featuring a phone number — (917) 512-7715 — which customers in New York City can text after 12 p.m. on July 29 to engage with a chatbot and

Iceland Inspires Alexander McQueen’s Fall 2017 Campaign

ICY HOT: Alexander McQueen’s fall campaign trail led to Iceland, where Jamie Hawkesworth photographed Rianne Von Rompaey. There are rugged black-and-white shots against the Icelandic landscape and contrasting warm, interior shots in saturated color. The collection was inspired by Cornwall and, in particular, the works of the 20th-century sculptor Barbara Hepworth, whose studio was in St. Ives.
Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton worked alongside the stylist Camilla Nickerson and creative agency M/M Paris on the campaign that will break in the biannual title Love, which lands on newsstands later this month.
The great outdoors is becoming something of a theme for McQueen campaigns: For fall-winter 2016, Hawkesworth braved the wind-chilled Scottish terrain for a spare and dramatic shoot, while for spring 2017 he and Burton took to the beaches off the northwest African coast.
At the time of the last campaign launch, McQueen said Burton and the photographer shared “a mutual love for British nature and wildlife.”

Duchess of Cambridge Taps Alexander McQueen Yet Again

MCQUEEN’S REIGN: The Duchess of Cambridge did her best to remain as low-key as possible during her sister Pippa Middleton’s wedding on Saturday, and her choice of dress suited her attitude.

There was no way she would ever risk upstaging the bride, like Pippa nearly did in her curve-hugging Alexander McQueen gown at Westminster Abbey six years ago. Instead, the duchess wore a custom-made, Forties-style midi-dress by McQueen, the same fashion house that created her wedding gown.
The dress had full sleeves, a peplum waist and full skirt, and its peachy pink color complemented the cascade of roses around the door of the church. Her hat, adorned with a large rose, was by milliner Jane Taylor, and her morganite earrings were from jeweler Kiki McDonough. The stiletto heels were Gianvito Rossi.
Mother of the bride Carole Middleton also plumped for pink – and she chose the same couture brand as she had six years ago for her elder daughter’s wedding. Mama Middleton donned a Catherine Walker coat dress with buttons down the front and bracelet sleeves, pairing

Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2017

Creative director Sarah Burton’s collection was all about female power, both creative and physical, with a collection inspired by the British artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth and by medieval armor and heraldry.
There were eagle, griffin and mystical embroideries on long chiffon dresses, while others resembled tapestries and a silvery pleated one recalled shining armor. Many were accessorized with leather corset belts or long falconry gloves.
The Hepworth aesthetic came through in color and texture – which contrasted with the medieval flourish. The color palette took in gesso, stone and bone, the latter tone was best expressed through a long and dramatic leather topcoat.
One pleated dress had deep V-neck and a marble print, while another was done in cream devoré  velvet. Accessories included a necklace with a large stone at the center (inspired by the one Hepworth wore), flat booties and pebble-shaped clutch bags.

First Lady Melania Trump Turns to Alexander McQueen For Latest Look

RED ALERT: Having taken an increasingly public role on the world stage in the past week or two, First Lady Melania Trump was front-and-center at the Saturday rally President Trump held in Florida.
Not to be missed in a cap-sleeve red Alexander McQueen knee-length dress, FLOTUS led the crowd in The Lord’s Prayer. The President (who kept his own look casual with a white buttoned down shirt but no tie) smiled affirmatively as he crossed the stage before his wife offered a few remarks.
Wearing the Republican party’s signature color, the First Lady pledged to create and support initiatives that would help women and children throughout the world.

She told supporters, “It is my honor and a great pleasure to stand here before you as First Lady of the United States. The America we envision is one that works for all Americans and where all Americans can work and succeed. A nation committed to greater civility and unity between people from all sides of the political divide.”
“I will always stay true to myself and be truthful to you no matter what the opposition is saying about me.” FLOTUS said.

Alexander Stutterheim Builds an Unusual Kind of Luxury Brand in Sweden

In fashion, Sweden has fostered notable names such as Acne Studios, H&M and Nudie Jeans. According to Alexander Stutterheim, the cofounder of contemporary raincoat brand Stutterheim, the Scandinavian country has yet to give birth to a luxury label on par with Hermès and Margiela. He’s taken on the mission to rectify that, offering his hand-knit sweaters from his Stockholm apartment, where he has fulfilled custom orders with in-the-know shoppers, to boutiques for the first time next fall.
Slated to exhibit at Paris’ Man trade fair in January, John Sterner: Swedish Knitology is set to wholesale chunky fisherman sweaters knit by hand from ecological wool and introduce new styles, in Merino wool and cashmere, as well as accessories such as scarves, beanies, socks and gloves.
Made in a week by a grandmotherly knitter in the south of Sweden and numbered with a leather tag like a work of art, the fisherman sweater, dubbed Antidote, retails for $ 1,050. Stutterheim sees the possibility of growing the brand on the potential of the cashmere sweaters and the Merino knits, which sell for about $ 900 and $ 300, respectively. The accessories start at $ 30 for socks and fingerless gloves and go up to $ 80 for hats. Made by

Alexander Hamilton: Father of American Banking and American Burnout

On Tuesday, the musical Hamilton was nominated for a record 16 Tony awards. And three weeks ago, its creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, won the Pulitzer Prize. And it’s all, of course, richly deserved — Hamilton is everything the critics say it is: Ben Brantley of the New York Times, for instance, suggested people “mortgage their houses and lease their children to acquire tickets.” Ideally though, they should get tickets for their children too as the show has also been credited with getting young people interested in American history. But one angle of the saga of Hamilton, both on-stage and off, that has not been commented on is how it shows the value of time off.

In fact, in March, before the most recent round of awards and accolades began, Miranda announced he was going to take some time for himself. “I’m going on vacation next week to my undisclosed location under the sea where I recharge,” he said in a YouTube video. The video is part of a series Miranda does called “Ham4Ham,” in which he performs and interacts with people waiting to get tickets to the show — it’s not enough that he entertains them for 2 hours and 45 minutes once they do get tickets! His vacation was certainly well-deserved. Since he opened the show Off Broadway at the Public Theater in February of last year, Hamilton has been performed over 400 times.

As the show’s description on Playbill puts it: “From bastard orphan to Washington’s right hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country’s first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy, Hamilton is an exploration of a political mastermind.”

But, in addition to all that, one element of the show I found particularly interesting given my exploration of all things sleep is how it depicts a crucial and apparently timeless facet of our political culture. Hamilton wasn’t just the subject of our country’s first sex scandal — he was perhaps also our first fully documented case — and the founding father — of political burnout.

Ron Chernow, the author of Alexander Hamilton, the biography on which the musical is based, depicts a man who never slowed down. “This intensely driven man,” Chernow writes, “always compensating for his deprived early years, had a mind that throbbed incessantly with new ideas. When it came to issues confronting America, he committed all the resources of his mind.” But how much better would his adopted country have been if he had given some time to his mind and his body to refuel before he hit a wall of burnout?

Miranda himself proved the value of taking time off since it was while taking a breather from his previous hit show that he happened to read the Chernow biography that Hamilton is based on. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it was my first vacation from ‘In the Heights’ where I read this book,” he said on Charlie Rose in March. “It was literally the first time I had any time off from the show.”

Put another way, the inspiration for a musical about a man unable to give himself some time to recharge came to Miranda when he chose to give himself some time to recharge. And one of the biggest takeaways from the musical, for me, is this question: If the hard-driving Alexander Hamilton had given himself that time, how much better — and longer — would he have been able to serve the adopted country he loved so much?

The perpetual motion started early on, with Hamilton asking to be admitted to Princeton on an accelerated track. He was turned down, Chernow writes, likely because Princeton had allowed James Madison to finish on an accelerated schedule, during which he “worked himself into a state of nervous exhaustion.” When Madison finished his degree, according to Chernow, “he was still so debilitated from his intense studies that he feared for his health.”

So Hamilton wound up at King’s College (later renamed Columbia), where he rose at 6 a.m. every day and studied day and night. And this compulsion never let up. In the Revolutionary War, Hamilton rode on horseback “at a furious pace” along the Hudson delivering important messages from George Washington. Riding as many as 60 miles a day for five days straight, the trips took their toll on Hamilton. As he wrote to Washington in 1777, to explain a delay in his travels, “I have been detained here these two days by a fever and violent rheumatic pains throughout my body.” The frenzied pace continued after the war as Chernow writes, “At moments of supreme stress, Hamilton could screw himself up to an emotional pitch that was nearly feverish in intensity.”

At one point, Chernow tells how the chronically overstretched founder of our country’s first bank had to write to the Bank of the United States to admit “he did not know his account balance because he had lost his bank book.”

This theme of constant, ceaseless work — along with the inevitable consequences — comes through resoundingly in the musical as well. Again and again, Miranda presents a Hamilton who feels the pressure of all the work ahead of him. “And there’s a million things I haven’t done,” he sings, “but just you wait, just you wait.”

In the second act, as Hamilton is trying to get the Report on the Public Credit, his financial plan to establish government credit by full payment of government debt, through Congress, his wife Eliza and her sister Angelica urge him, in the song “Take a Break,” to get some rest. “Run away with us for the summer,” Eliza begs. “Let’s go upstate.” To which Hamilton replies: “I have to get my plan through Congress. I can’t stop until I get this plan through Congress.” The women tell him that “John Adams spends the summer with his family.” But Adams, Hamilton throws back, “doesn’t have a real job anyway.”

The sisters, in fact, are a counterpoint to Hamilton’s idea of a non-stop working existence. “Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now!” sings Eliza in “The Schuyler Sisters.” And in “That Would Be Enough,” she urges him to:

“Look at where you are
Look at where you started
The fact that you’re alive is a miracle
Just stay alive, that would be enough.”

There’s even a song entirely devoted to the theme of Hamilton working non-stop, called, appropriately, “Non-Stop.” “Why do you write like you’re running out of time? Write day and night like you’re running out of time?” asks Aaron Burr. To which the ensemble answers: “Every day you fight like you’re running out of time, like you’re running out of time. Are you running out of time?”

And, in a sense, he was. The sex scandal that would derail his career, and indirectly affect the decisions that led to his own premature death, was looming. Sleep deprivation had left Hamilton vulnerable to the plot, hatched by Maria Reynolds and her husband James, for Maria to seduce Hamilton and then blackmail him. In “Say No To This,” Miranda’s Hamilton is aware of this:

“I hadn’t slept in a week
I was weak, I was awake
You never seen a bastard orphan
More in need of a break
Longing for Angelica
Missing my wife
That’s when Miss Maria Reynolds walked into my life.”

And so begins an affair, and America’s first sex scandal — fueled by America’s first-recorded, and now sung — case of serious political burnout. (As Bill Clinton himself acknowledged: “Every important mistake I’ve made in my life, I’ve made because I was too tired.”)

“Like many people driven by their careers, he did not allow himself sufficient time for escape and relaxation,” Chernow writes, describing Hamilton as “a volatile personality encased inside a regimented existence.” Once the Reynolds affair was made public, Hamilton’s political opponents used it against him, making sure Hamilton was “distracted by the Reynolds probe.” “This sword of Damocles,” Chernow writes, “perpetually dangling above his head, may provide one explanation of why he never made a serious bid to succeed Washington as president.”

And the episode also laid the groundwork for his feud with Burr. “For fifteen years, Hamilton had tried to run down the sources of the lies told about him,” Chernow writes. “The effort had left him weary and dispirited, but he still could not shed the fantasy that, if only he went after slander with sufficient persistence, he could vanquish his detractors once and for all.” And it was this mood of lashing out, a habit he honed during the Reynolds scandal, that led to his duel with Burr.

There’s certainly no doubt that burnout among our political leaders has proved as enduring as Hamilton’s bank and other parts of his legacy. In fact, most of them actually brag about it. Our political campaigns constantly feature candidates presenting themselves as ceaselessly working – as if that’s a good thing. Ted Cruz used his sleep deprivation as a fundraising tool two weeks before he suspended his campaign (was his decision to nominate Carly Fiorina made in the brain fog of exhaustion?) In fact, we now know from mountains of recent science that sleep deprivation dulls our judgment, our decision-making, our creativity, our productivity — in short, pretty much every quality you want in a political leader.

And that’s no surprise: one recent scientific study showed that even moderate sleep deprivation can leave you with levels of cognitive impairment roughly equivalent to being legally drunk. And yet no political campaigns would feature a candidate saying, “vote for me, because I structure my life so that I make all my decisions while effectively drunk.” (Actually, that might explain a lot about this year’s race, but that’s a different post.) “No politician would smoke in front of a camera,” Dr. Till Roenneberg, a prominent sleep scientist in Germany, told me, “but all politicians clearly declare — and show it in their faces — how little they have slept. We know how important sleep is, but they convey to the world that sleep deprivation is good.” In fact, a recent McKinsey study shows how degraded our prefrontal cortex, which directs executive functioning, becomes when we’re sleep deprived.

And we actually do have evidence of how productive it is when a politician does recognize the creative powers of recharging. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was confronted with a problem every bit as pressing as Hamilton’s financial plan — how to give aid to Britain in the war without formally entering it. But, unlike Hamilton, Roosevelt did decide to go away. To think through the problem, he announced he was going to take ten-days to sail around the Caribbean on a navy ship.

And like Eliza, Eleanor was all for it. “I think of you sleeping and eating and I hope getting rest from the world,” she wrote him. Roosevelt’s aide Harry Hopkins also saw the importance of what Roosevelt was doing. “I began to get the idea that he was refueling,” Hopkins later said, “the way he so often does when he seems to be resting and carefree.”

The result of that refueling was Roosevelt’s idea for the $ 50 billion Lend-Lease program, in which the U.S. would lend arms and supplies to Britain and be paid back in kind after the war. Would he have come up with the plan by continuing to work around the clock “as though he was running out of time?” Those around him certainly attributed the masterful plan to Roosevelt’s masterful use of his creative resources. “One can only say that FDR, a creative artist in politics, had put in his time on this cruise evolving the pattern of a masterpiece,” Roosevelt’s speechwriter Robert Sherwood later wrote.

After Hillary Clinton stepped down as secretary of state in 2012 — having logged nearly 1 million miles flying to 112 different countries — she told the New York Times‘ Gail Collins. “I would like to see whether I can get untired.” What a great word — “untired.” Is she making room in the current campaign to regularly get herself untired?

In a Daily Show appearance in 2007, her husband talked about the wider consequences of political burnout! “I do believe sleep deprivation has a lot to do with some of the edginess of Washington today,” he said. “You have no idea how many Republican and Democratic members of the House and Senate are chronically sleep-deprived.”

And if you thought politics was edgy in 2007, take a look at the headlines today as our politicians continue to push away a free and available resource — sleep and renewal — that can help them come up with more creative solutions to our many challenges.

Alexander Hamilton was only 49 years old when he died, in the infamous duel with Aaron Burr. What connection did his burnout have with his untimely death? When you find yourself walking to a duel at dawn — after you had lost your son in a duel three years earlier — it’s fair to ask if you’re mustering all the wisdom you’re capable of.

Like other burnout aficionados, Hamilton was selling himself short. Contrary to all our collective delusions, he was successful not because of his overwork and burnout, but in spite of them. And perhaps if he’d listened to Eliza’s advice to “take a break,” he’d have had more time to build the nation he was so devoted to.

NEW YORK — The opening of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is still a few weeks away, but limited-edition designer merchandise inspired by the exhibition has already been selected.
As of May 5, museum goers will find jewelry, handbags, scarves, stationery, books and postcards amidst the more than 150 items. As a nod to the fact that fashion insiders like to be first, the museum will launch the collection online May 2 to celebrate this year’s Met Ball that night. All of the merchandise will be offered in its Fifth Avenue main-floor store on May 5, timed to the official exhibition opening for the public.
Gleaning shopping preferences from the in-store assortment that was offered for last year’s blockbuster “China: Through the Looking Glass” show, The Met’s retail team is focusing on smaller items that retail for $ 500 or less. Small, lightweight items that are not cumbersome for tourists or out-of-towners to carry in their bags or stash in suitcases are consistently popular, according to a staffer in the museum’s retail division. Exclusive offerings include a $ 385 silk chiffon Alexander McQueen scarf. With prices ranging from $ 425 to $ 925, Issey

The 10 Best Looks From Alexander Wang’s Last Collection for Balenciaga (Plus, Zoe Kravitz on the Runway)

The moment has come. Earlier this evening Alexander Wang took his last bow at Balenciaga as the house’s creative director. Wang’s final show was one of the most anticipated collections of the Paris Fashion Week spring 2016 season. But instead of going out with fireworks, the California-born Wang sent out a quietly exquisite collection of all-white clothes, set to a ’90s rap soundtrack of Notorious B.I.G.’s Going Back to Cali and Snoop Dogg’s Nuthin but a G Thang. The soundtrack alluded to his departure from Paris with this last Balenciaga show and that it’s back to the States for the New York-based designer.

While the collection was feminine and diaphanous from afar, a closer look will show you that subtle touches of Wang’s street style aesthetic are everywhere. Overalls in silk duchesse, flat mules in Chantilly lace, and drop crotch pants were interspersed between the siren gowns, for which the esteemed house of Balenciaga is known. Last, but certainly not least, Wang’s friend and supporter Zoe Kravitz took to the runway in a transparent lace dress in support of Wang’s big show.

And, in a touching final moment, the vivacious Wang took his biannual jaunt down the runway, skipping, running, twirling and taking selfies during a long and emotional bow. Here are our favorite looks from the collection:

Looking Back: Alexander McQueen’s ‘Highland Rape’ 1995 Runway

Designers from Vivienne Westwood to Oscar de la Renta and Isaac Mizrahi have long mined Scottish tartans for inspiration. But perhaps none is more closely associated with the theme than Alexander McQueen, who broke out with his seminal “Highland Rape” collection in 1995 and reprised it for fall 2006 with his “Widows of Culloden” effort, which he described as “very ‘Macbeth.’” WWD called it “a moment” that lived up to the hype — “fabulously creative and achingly wearable.” Afterward, McQueen said, “I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work….I find beauty in melancholy.”

ShowStudio Debuts Alexander McQueen Short Film

MCQUEEN ON FILM: Sunday might have marked the close of the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, but the designer’s archive is getting another lease of life, thanks to Nick Knight’s ShowStudio Web site.
Knight, together with filmmaker Younji Ku and art director Jon Emmony, has created a montage of ShowStudio’s archive footage of the late Lee Alexander McQueen’s creations, for a film called “Lee Alexander McQueen, 1969-2010.” Knight has taken footage of some of McQueen’s most striking looks — among them a red feathered dress from his spring 2001 show, and a sculptural hound’s tooth outfit from his fall 2009 collection — and has heightened the looks’ impact by distorting the footage and embellishing it with 3-D animation.
The latest project adds to “Unseen McQueen,” a ShowStudio film that features footage of McQueen’s collaborators talking about working with the designer, whose release coincided with the “Savage Beauty” opening in March. The new film is currently live on the showstudio.com Web site.

Rising Star Pico Alexander Talks Social Media, Bioluminescence and Taking Risks

2015-06-03-1433346089-8240349-ALEXANDERPICOBway.com.jpg

I met up with Pico Alexander at the Cafe at the Signature Theatre on the eve of his 24th birthday. He was taller than I expected with a thick head of hair that he hid under his fedora hat. Pico has a spiritual energy to him, with a look and demeanor that reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. When I make the comparison he smiles and blushes; “He was my favorite when I was a kid. I used to pause the dvd Edward Scissorhands because I was crying so much. I felt so bad for him! Like when he punctured the waterbed or tried to cut the steak. I love that guy. Thank you for saying that.” Sodas in hand, we sat down, with piano music playing in the background at the Cafe, and started chatting:

Where does the name Pico come from?
My grandfather started jokingly referring to me as Pico when my mom was pregnant with me. And then when I was born, they wanted to give me a serious name, so they named me Alexander. But nobody ever called me Alexander except for one teacher in sixth grade.

Growing up, you went to LaGuardia High School. What did you focus on?
I auditioned for music and for acting because that’s what my parents were breeding me to be. I played classical piano and trumpet for awhile. My mom has this fond memory of me getting into her car after the audition and saying ‘Mom, i’m going to be an actor’. But in reality I had been writing that in journals for years.

You are kind of a man of mystery. You aren’t very active on social media. You don’t use twitter or have an instagram account.
No social media for me.

Why’s that?
I think that I spent too much time comparing myself to other people and it didn’t seem very real anymore. All of a sudden you have more than a thousand friends and everybody is posting all the best things that happened to them. And it kind of unsettled me really. I started posting a status and waiting to get the likes. If I got the likes then I was validated as a human for that day and if I didn’t it was like “f***, nobody likes me”

Who is Pico?
I don’t know. I’m trying to figure that out. I’d be hesitant to give any sort of an answer because its always changing.

What would your friends say about you?
They would probably say I’m one of the most immature people they’ve ever met!

In what way?
I can be my share of selfish and uncompromising and loud and obnoxious and a bit of an asshole and definitely mean to my share of people. And not very empathetic. And these are the things that I’m working on now. It definitely took me awhile to realize that I’m not the center of the universe.

Did your off-Broadway show Punk Rock help in that way?
Sure, I think Punk Rock had an effect.

2015-06-03-1433348599-5262989-pico2.jpg

Let’s talk about What I Did Last Summer. Who do you play?
I play Ted. He’s a local boy, a Canadian. He can be a little bit of a rowdy influence and he’s a friend of Charlie, the protagonist. Charlie meets Anna Trumble who is a bit of an outcast and eccentric and she taps into his potential and tells him that he has a gift and he has to work on finding out what it is. She unlocks that for him and he goes and finds out there is more to life than what he originally thought.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?
We pretty much just lose it back there in the dressing room. It’s me, Noah Galvin, and Dan Weiner our drummer. We all share the dressing room, get hyped up, and listen to music.

I saw that you played a young Joe Carroll in FOX’s The Following. What was it like being on set?
The scene was a lot bigger beforehand. There was a fish in the scene and the character Doctor Strauss puts the fish on the table and its flopping around and the Doctor wants to illustrate to Joe that he’s enraptured by it. Which was super interesting because, by law, you are only allowed to take a fish out of water for 20 seconds at a time. So we had a dude standing by with a bucket who would constantly interrupt the scene and grab the fish and throw it in the bucket and take another fish and put it on the table.

I read online that you want to swim with sharks. Is that right?
Yeah, I’d love to swim with sharks! Sharknado. A bit of a metaphor for wanting to risk it all in a way.

What are some of your hobbies?
I’m writing a lot lately. And I’m very fascinated with my dreams. I’m taking a sober year this year. I had a crazy experience at the end of last year. I was away on a small island with my family and I swam in this bio-luminescent bay and thought – it’s not going to get any better than this – and on the spot decided to try a year of sobriety as a challenge. Because of that, my dreams are so vivid this year. So I want to really focus on that unconscious self this year and connect with that self and see what it is that I truly want.

Do you meditate?
I meditate a little bit. Not as much as I’d like to.

One question I ask everyone: What’s one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
To slow down. Listen. Observe. Help people. Help them up not push them down. And to be honest. High school is a really tough time for everybody and we don’t really understand that at the time. Be honest about your fears and your shortcomings. And just be nice.

What do you like best about yourself?
That’s crazy. I never think about that. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in melancholy. I think I like my honesty. I’ll ask people questions that might be uncomfortable but will also put myself one hundred percent out there. I’d rather fail than be mediocre.

Is there anything that you want people to know about you?
No. He laughs. I’m always weary of putting anything in writing because it’s always changing. If I had to choose, I would want them to know that I’m loyal.

Do you have any favorite quotes?
I like the quote “It is written” from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Because it means it is what it is and everything is what it is and that’s ok.

Alexander McQueen Play to Open in London

MCQUEEN ON STAGE: It seems as if the buzz around the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” exhibition that opened last week at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum has inspired a host of creative endeavors exploring the late Lee Alexander McQueen’s life. Two books have already been published this year — Andrew Wilson’s “Alexander McQueen: Blood Beneath the Skin” and Dana Thomas’ “Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano” — and now a play about the late designer is in the pipeline, too. May 12 will see the opening of “McQueen,” a play written by James Phillips and directed by John Caird, at London’s St. James Theater. Among the cast are “Glee” star Dianna Agron, who will make her British stage debut playing a fictional character called Dhalia and Stephen Wight, who will play McQueen, while British actress Tracy-Ann Oberman will play Isabella Blow. Wight has appeared in the BBC’s “Sherlock,” and stage productions including Michael Grandage’s “Don Juan in Soho,” and Nicholas Hytner’s “The Habit of Art,” while Oberman is known for her British television work. The theater states that the work is “more than a bio play,” and describes it as “a journey into the visionary

Alexander McQueen Launches Capsule Collection of Silk Scarves

SILK STORY: Alexander McQueen has created a capsule collection of silk scarves to mark the launch of the designer’s “Savage Beauty” retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum, opening on Saturday. Each scarf features one of five designs drawn from signature house creations such as the Armadillo shoes from spring 2010, and the Spray Painted Dress from spring 1999. “Our silks remain the most popular and accessible product from the house, and we wanted everyone to be able to own a memento celebrating ‘Savage Beauty,’ featuring imagery from Lee’s most memorable collections,” said McQueen’s chief executive officer Jonathan Akeroyd. The capsule collection will be available in limited runs of only 100 for each design, and the scarves will retail for $ 595 at the Alexander McQueen flagship on Bond Street in London and at alexandermcqueen.com.
