Michael Phelps And Allison Schmitt Get Real About Going To Therapy

Olympic athletes Allison Schmitt and Michael Phelps know what it takes to win in the pool: Train hard, push yourself and listen to your coach.

But both swimmers say they also had another source of support that made all the difference ― a psychologist.

“Every time that I came out of that office, I felt so much better,” Phelps told HuffPost. “I was so much more relieved just talking…it didn’t matter what I was talking about. I was getting it out and I was communicating.”

Phelps and Schmitt were presented with special recognition awards at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s annual event to recognize National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day in Washington, D.C. on May 4.

The pair have partnered with SAMSHA to encourage kids to view mental and behavioral health as a core component of their overall wellness.

Schmitt says not asking for help when you are struggling with a mental health condition is akin to getting swallowed “in the rip tide.”

“Get that lifeguard out there,” she said. “It will make it a lot easier even during those rough water times.”

The swimmers have a long history of friendship and support. Schmitt entered treatment in early 2015 to help manage depression and she credits Phelps with encouraging her to ask for help.

“[Michael] said to me, ‘I can tell there is something wrong,’” Schmitt told The Detroit Free Press. “‘I don’t know what it is. I’m here for you. I can help you or I can find someone else to help you.’”

“That was the turning point for me,” Schmitt said, adding that she sought help soon after that conversation.

Phelps has long been open about working on his personal life outside of the pool. As a child, he was diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and more recently, the Olympic champion entered treatment for substance abuse in 2014 after a drunk driving arrest.

“We’re taught to persevere,” Schmitt told HuffPost. “It works in the pool: [If] you don’t get a time you want, swim faster. But life is a lot bigger than that.”

Schmitt says that when you’re hurting from any sort of life stressor or a mental health condition, it’s essential to ask for help.

Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that among children ages 2 to 8, one in seven experiences a psychological disorder, which is classified as a mental, behavioral or development problem. Approximately one in five adults, or 43.8 million American adults, experiences a mental illness in a given year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

“A lot of these people suffer silently,” Schmitt said. “[But] it’s okay to not be okay.”

Words to live by, we think.

As part of May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re focusing on treatment and the stigma around getting help. Check out our coverage here and share your story at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

Allison Williams ‘Completely’ Lied To Friends About The Plot Of ‘Get Out’

This post contains major plot spoilers for the film “Get Out.”

Allison Williams, while making the rounds for Jordan Peele’s psychological thriller “Get Out,” has been as tight-lipped about the film’s twists as one might expect. Williams plays Rose, the white girlfriend of main character Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) who invites him home to meet her family, where events take a dark turn.

But she hasn’t just been hiding the dramatic plot of the movie from the public.

“I’ve also been completely lying to my friends and family about the premise of the movie ― for almost two years now,” she told The Huffington Post during an appearance on the “Here to Make Friends” podcast. “When my friends asked me what it was about ― this is how I said it in press, too; I basically did press as Rose, which doesn’t help the suspicion that I might just actually be a psychopath in real life ― I basically said, I bring my black boyfriend home to meet my parents, I assume they’re going to be totally cool with it, and then when he gets there, things start to go weird, and then it quickly becomes us against the world, and I have to choose between my family and my boyfriend.”

“Literally people I’ve known for my entire life, I was like, this is the premise of the movie… and then they’d get out of the movie, and they’re like: ‘I have to talk to you for two reasons. One, our friendship is over. Two, I loved the movie.’”

As those who’ve seen “Get Out” realize, Williams’s spoiler-free summary leaves out a major turning point in the film: when Chris, and the audience, realize that Rose is in on her family’s malevolent scheme to lure young black men to their home, hypnotize and entrap them, and transplant white clients’ brains into their victims’ bodies. Her charming, “woke” persona has all been a pitch-perfect performance, carefully geared to specifically appeal to her thoughtful, artistic boyfriend’s needs.

Williams told HuffPost that she’d already been sold on the script by the time Rose appeared on-screen for the first time. The opening scene follows LaKeith Stanfield as a young black man walking alone in a white suburb, a scene Williams pointed out is reminiscent of the shocking killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012. “After I read that scene, I was like, ‘I don’t really care who Rose is, I definitely want to be in this movie,’” she said.

She, like many in the audience, was caught by surprise when she first encountered her character’s psychotic turn. “I was reading the script, and I was like, ‘Rose seems great! She seems totally fine,’” she admitted, laughing. “Then I got to the end and I was like, ‘Now I have to play her. This bitch is crazy.’”

“A lot of white people don’t see it coming,” Williams told HuffPost. “And then they try to talk themselves out of it. ‘Maybe she’s been hypnotized too.’”

Check out Allison Williams’ full interview with Here to Make Friends on the podcast ― the discussion of “Get Out,” which is spoiler-heavy, starts at about the 40-minute mark:

Inside Allison Holker’s Son’s Neutral Nursery: ‘I’m Really Big on Letting a Child Decide What Color They Like’

When Allison Holker and Stephen “tWitch” Boss were brainstorming the nursery design for their son Maddox Laurel, now 10 months, they didn’t stick to tradition — and for good reason.

“I’m really big on letting a child decide what color they like, instead of throwing a color at them,” Holker, 29, tells PEOPLE exclusively of Maddox’s room in the couple’s newly renovated home. “I felt going more of a neutral brown would help him find what he likes.”

“I believe that not every girl might like dolls, I don’t think every boy might like cars. I think that a kid needs to have a little more space and develop on their own and see what they are naturally drawn to,” adds the Dancing with the Stars pro. “Going a neutral color will help him pick what his favorite color is on his own.”

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

The couple enlisted the help of HomeGoods designer Amy Lipnis to bring their vision to life. The resulting space makes use of the neutral browns, tans and creams, but throws in pops of colors like yellow and blue, as well as a few special items that brighten up the room.

“We have a rocking-chair elephant that is just adorable,” Holker says of her favorite piece in the nursery. “Being able to sit with my little boy every night before he goes to bed and read him his story is the best time of the day for me. It’s something we do every night together, and it’s just our special time.”

“I really hope that when he gets a little bit bigger that he’ll actually sit on the rocking chair and actually enjoy it as much as I do. It’s so cute and it adds a really lovely childlike nature to the room,” adds the mom of two.

There’s no doubt little Maddox is covered, but what about Holker’s 8½-year-old daughter Weslie?

“My daughter’s favorite space in the house is definitely our dining room,” she says. “My daughter absolutely gets really excited for our family dinner and she always cooks with us.”

Continues the fit mama, “When we sit down, she’s always excited to ask the first question at the dinner table of, ‘How was everyone’s day?’ She’s always the one to start off the conversation, which we love so much.”

Though Holker and Boss, 34 — The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘s resident DJ — have been living in their first home together for a bit, they have taken their time in making it their own. But their patience and hard work have been worth it.

“We’ve been living in our home for a year now, so we’ve been working on designing it, trying to figure out what to do with . We’re excited to have it finally done and we absolutely love it now,” Holker says.

Allison Holker Chops Off Her Hair! ‘I Feel So Much Stronger and More Confident’

Leave it to a Dancing With the Stars pro to take a big leap — metaphorically, that is — just weeks after having her second baby! The dancer, who welcomed son Maddox March 27, revealed another big life change this week: A short, choppy and wavy new “lob!”

Allison holker haircutAxelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic; Courtesy Allison Holker

The star, who first unveiled her cut on Glamour, tells PeopleStyle that she was more than ready to ditch her famously long, curly locks. “I needed a change,” she says. “I have never had short hair and my mother, my husband and my hairstylist have always said that short hair would suit me very well. So I decided to take a risk. And it truly was a great decision.”

The husband in question: Stephen “tWitch” Boss, her fellow pro dancer, who she says encouraged her to embrace the scissors. “tWitch loves my hair this style! He always wanted to see it this way, and well, he has good taste because he was right!” she says, adding that she also was enamored of the style from the minute one.

“I loved it, from the moment I saw it. As a woman I used to think I had to have long, full, wavy hair to feel gorgeous and womanly. But I feel so much stronger and more confident with this hair. I’m not relying on my hair to say I’m a woman. I am a woman.”

To achieve the look, Holker showed hairstylist Kennedy Van Dyke a “gorgeous” photo of Sarah Hyland at the Emmys; shortly thereafter, her famously long locks had hit the floor. But Holker has no regrets. “I feel more myself. It fits my personality; I’m spontaneous, bubbly, cheerful, and fun,” she says. And even better? It requires less maintenance: “It’s so easy to style! Just a little texture builder spray (by Matrix), shake it out and I’m ready to go. [Plus], since I have had this haircut, I use less contour on my face. This style shapes my face better and naturally brings out my features.”

But as much as she’s loving her big beauty change, it’s that other major life change that’s really rocking her world at the moment. “Maddox smiles every time I kiss his cheek, And it absolutely melts my heart,” she says. “Maddox has brought such a special light out of me that I didn’t even know I had.”

Are you loving the cut?!

Ruth Bader Ginsberg Gets Rap Tribute In ‘Judges Delight’ Video By Allison Lane

It’s really no secret that Ruth Bader Ginsberg is kind of a badass. Now, her legacy as a Supreme Court Justice is immortalized in an unexpected way — a rap parody of the Sugarhill Gang’s iconic “Rapper’s Delight.”

The video comes from Allison Lane, an actress, writer and filmmaker known for her work with “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “Going Down In LA-LA Land” and the upcoming “Kiss Me, Kill Me.” The hilarious “Judges Delight” tribute to RBG is a feature on Lane’s popular YouTube channel called “See You Next Tuesday.”

“When the SCOTUS Marriage Equality ruling came in on Friday, I was so overcome by emotion,” Lane told The Huffington Post in an email. “It was just so beautiful… this moment of millions of rainbow profiles & #LoveWins and the Rainbow-White House! I saw 2 men in their 80s who finally got married after 54 years together! I saw a toddler jumping for joy when he learned his mommies could finally get married! It felt like a great tide had turned and I was compelled to make a video for my comedy Youtube channel to help celebrate!”

Lane added, “Ruth Bader Ginsburg is actually kind of a bad ass, which is why the internet has termed her the Notorious R.B.G. I thought, what if we have fun with that bad-ass image and make her into a superhero rapper… for real. Then I heard the applesauce that Scalia was spouting in his dissents last week and well, the rap lyrics almost wrote themselves!”

Check out “Judge’s Delight” above and head here for more from Lane.

Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer Square Off In Hilarious ‘Mom’ Scene

Allison Janney has been killing it this fall between her heartbreaking dramatic work on “Masters of Sex” and her rib-splitting scene-stealing on “Mom.” This CBS sitcom is quickly becoming “The Allison Janney Show,” and this week provided the funniest scene yet. Janney was helped by an equally brilliant Octavia Spencer, who’s guest stint on this show is so strong we’re kind of rooting against that “Murder, She Wrote” reboot. Make her a regular cast member here, instead.

As Regina, Spencer has proven the perfect comic foil for Janney’s Bonnie. The two women do not like one another, and yet they keep finding themselves together. This week, Bonnie fell completely off the wagon after losing her apartment, job and car — the last she just can’t find. Christy enlisted the aid of Regina and Marjorie to help Bonnie sober up, but they couldn’t keep up with her. Wracked with guilt, Bonnie decided to help Christy with her burden.

This meant a hung-over and simply awful looking Bonnie showing up at the restaurant, where she literally tried to take over Christy’s job. She sweetly introduced herself to a table and when she couldn’t find them bread, she brought them an extra candle instead. Then, Marjorie and Regina caught up, but it was Regina’s impressive tackle of Bonnie that finally ended her ill-conceived attempt to help.

Allison Janney is making a strong case for “funniest woman on television,” and Octavia Spencer is proving a brilliant comedic partner. Here’s hoping the two share as many scenes as possible as “Mom” continues every Monday at 9:30 p.m. EST on CBS.

Allison Janney Gets To Work With Menopause On ‘Mom’ Now, Too!

As if Christy didn’t have enough trouble dealing with her mother on a good day on “Mom,” the freshman sitcom threw in a new wrinkle into the three-generation family dynamic. Bonnie called Christy in a panic in the middle of the night. She was certain that she was pregnant. But that wasn’t it at all.

In a very quick scene that Allison Janney absolutely owned, she found out that it was menopause. All we saw was her storming across the waiting room of a doctor’s office”Are you freakin’ kidding me?! you’re a lying son of a bitch! you shouldn’t even be allowed to practice in this country!” she shouted as she stormed across the scene. “Menopause, my ass!”

Janney is having an absolute blast with this character, and she embraced the more absurd aspects of her new situation with the same gusto she’s been throwing into her boozing and whoring around. Already the most entertaining character on the show, this new development pushes Janney to a whole new level, as evidenced by her throwing a dish and a phone out the kitchen window to close the half hour.

The absurdity continues on “Mom,” Mondays at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
