Shan’ann Watts Brother ‘Always Worried About Her and the Girls’ But ‘Couldn’t Protect Them’

The younger brother of Shan’ann Watts says that he had always worried about his big sister and her daughters living in Colorado, because he wouldn’t be around to keep them from harm.

In an emotional statement read aloud at Shan’ann’s funeral, Frankie Rzucek remembered his big sister as being an ambitious, loving woman who couldn’t wait to become a mom.

From a young age, I always knew my sister was going to be successful — and nothing would stand in her way,” Rzucek’s statement read.  “She was born to be a mother. Boy, was she ready! Closets were full even before she knew she was pregnant. She couldn’t wait. She was my mom, times ten — whether either one of them wanted to admit it. She had ambition in her eyes and wanted a great life for her children and herself.”

Rzucek went on to say that his sister excelled at motherhood. “They were always well-dressed and well mannered,” he wrote. “She taught them to be brave and independent, just like Shan’ann. She was very successful and independent, before any man came along — and that’s just the way she wanted it.”

But despite Shan’ann’s independence, Rzucek was always concerned about the distance between them.

“I always worried about her and the girls being so far because I couldn’t protect them,” he wrote. “Growing up, she was a perfect role model. She had a lot of friends and was very popular, which made it hard for me being her little brother trying to protect her from heartbreak and other things. She moved out at 18 and never looked back.”

Frankie did not mention Shan’ann’s husband, Chris Watts, who is accused of murdering his entire family. He has previously lashed out at Chris, calling him a “heartless psychopath” and saying that he “stole my whole world.”

Chris Watts has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder as well as other charges in the deaths of his wife and two daughters, Bella, 4. and Celeste, 3. He is being held without bond at the Weld County Jail. He has not yet entered a plea.

In an interview with police, Chris Watts claimed that he only strangled his wife after he saw her on the baby monitor strangling their two children — a claim that police have said they do not believe.

As the case against Chris Watts continues, Shan’ann’s family continues to mourn the woman who seemed to have the life everyone envied. “She was ready to take on the world, and we know she did,” Frankie Rzucek concluded in his statement. “I love you always, your brother, Frankie.”

Glass is the Third Act We Always Wanted for Unbreakable

Warning: Spoilers for Unbreakable and Split follow…

Long before the MCU, and even before Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, M. Night Shyamalan followed up his massive breakout hit The Sixth Sense with a really solid take on the old “what if superheroes were real?” story.

Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, didn’t reach the heights of Sixth Sense but in looking back, fans still herald it as one of the writer/director’s best and most satisfying projects. The way the story unfolded definitely seemed to set up “adventures to come,” though it also managed to stand very well on its own, as an isolated island work, without franchise goals. You could certainly imagine Willis’ David Dunn continuing his work as Philadelphia’s super strong rain-poncho’d vigilante while Jackson’s Elijah “Mr. Glass” Price rotted away in a psychiatric care facility…and that was enough for most.

Christian Siriano Owns ‘Maybe 20 Pairs’ of Glasses, But Always Wears the Same Ones Every Day

When you think of designer Christian Siriano, it’s hard to imagine him without accessorizing with his signature black-rimmed glasses. So when the opportunity to partner with Transitions Optical to design colorful, fashion-forward lenses presented itself, Siriano knew it was a perfect match.

“It’s nice to work on something that feels very like something I wanted or needed,” Siriano told PEOPLE. “Getting dressed everyday should be a fun experience so why should your eyewear be any different? These lenses give wearers freedom of expression and comfortable vision day and night. I’m loving the product.”

The experience working with the brand, known for its smart lenses that adjust to the perfect tint when you step outdoors to protect your eyes, has even inspired Siriano to switch up his eyewear look more than he has ever before.

“I’m actually really bad that I never change my glasses. I wear my glasses and never put sunglasses on, which is a really bad habit,” he told us. “I probably have maybe 20 pairs of glasses and I literally wear the same pair every day. But with these new lenses with different colors I am going to start switching them out more because now I actually have a reason to.”

He added, “I just got a pair of really cool gold lenses that I like and there’s also a classic silver tone. I’m going to try and switch it up.”

And perfectly timed with his partnership, Siriano unveiled his own Resort 2019 collection, which included ’60s cat eye sunglasses with Transitions lenses popped in.

“I put these different lenses kind of in my typical sunglasses shape. The frames itself are modern, square and really bright colors. It was inspired by a Barbie Dream House kind of vibe so they’re fun and quirky. So all around think girls will look really cool,” he told us.

When it comes to Siriano’s personal eyewear aesthetic, the designer described his go-to look as “pretty classic and simple” with a “cool dark frame,” but admitted he wasn’t always fond of his glasses.

“I’ve had them since I was 12 or 13 and of course, when you’re young, you’re like, ‘Oh my god,’” Siriano said. “You just feel like a nerd. But now I can’t imagine not wearing them. It is so funny. It is my look now. I love how they have become such an accessory for people to wear if even if they don’t need them.”

Grieving Dad’s Words of Love After Son Was ‘Lured’ Into Woods in Rape and Murder: ‘I Will Always Honor Him’

In the wake of what authorities described as his 16-year-old son’s brutal rape and murder at the hands of a longtime friend, Washington dad Benjamin Eastman Jr.’s repeated message has been one of “love and togetherness.”

“I want thank the community and friends for all they have done for my family,” Eastman, who goes by “B.J.,” posted Thursday on Facebook, adding that words could not “explain the love feel right now.”

“There’s no way could ever get through this without it,” he wrote. “I would like everyone to remember my son how they want to but most of all how he has made our community and other communities far and wide stop and forget about judgment and hate.”

“Our community is full of love and togetherness right now,” he concluded his post. “My son made the world a better place. He continues to do so and I will always honor him for that. I ask that we all focus on that.”

Prosecutors say it’s too early in the case to discuss a possible motive in the beating death of Benjamin “Ben” Eastman III a week after his birthday — but the details released so far have attracted international attention.

Meanwhile, his community in southwestern Washington has drawn closer together in the shadow of such a vicious crime.

“When you have a county as close-knit and tight as Lewis and a town like Randle, which is even smaller, a tragic incident like this is going to impact everybody,” Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer tells PEOPLE.

RELATED: Slain Boy’s Father Sat Front Row in Court to Face Accused Murderers — ‘I Wanted Them to Look at Me’

Charging documents previously obtained by PEOPLE show how, according to investigators, Ben was tricked into going in the woods sometime after texting early on June 24 with another 16-year-old boy, Benito Marquez, a friend and classmate who had known Ben for years.

Marquez and his older brother, 21-year-old Jonathon Adamson, “lured” Ben “under the guise of a camping trip,” prosecutors said in a probable cause affidavit.

There the pair allegedly carried out an assault they had planned together: striking Ben for some “20 to 45 minutes” and kicking him more than 100 times. During the attack, Ben was sexually assaulted with a stick, according to the affidavit.

Adamson and Marquez beat him in the head with a large rock, just to make sure he was dead, authorities believe.

Finally, they allegedly buried his body on the property of a relative where it was discovered three days later, after Ben was reported missing by his father. His shallow grave was marked with a homemade cross of sticks.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Marquez, who had seemingly posted on Facebook asking for help finding Ben before his body was discovered, was an early subject of the investigation, according to authorities. But he and Adamson then allegedly fled the county, traveling some 200 miles east, before being found by the state patrol on June 29, the probable cause affidavit states.

They were each interviewed by police and subsequently charged with first-degree rape and murder as well as tampering with physical evidence and unlawful disposal of remains, the affidavit states.

Detention records confirm they remain in custody in Lewis County in lieu of $ 10 million bond.

They have not entered pleas and an attorney representing them declined to comment to PEOPLE. They are scheduled to return to court on Thursday.

While B.J., Ben’s dad, has spoken out about the suspects and sat front row in court at their first hearing, on Monday, he has largely kept the focus on his boy.

“I want everyone to remember the love we feel for each other,” he posted on Facebook Friday, following a vigil for Ben. “My son will live in our hearts.”

He also offered this: “Remember to smile or say hi to a stranger.”

Speaking to local TV station KOMO earlier this week, B.J. said, “It’s easy to get caught up in the negative aspect of this, but I remember my son and his smile.”

“There is evil people out there,” B.J. said then. “I don’t know what makes them tick. I don’t want to know. I’m loved and my son was loved and that’s all I’m about.”

Prosecutor Meyer tells PEOPLE Ben’s death — the violence and intimacy of it — is “hard to put into words.”

“Ben was a nice kid from a good family,” he says.

Others who knew the teen have also paid tribute to his love of the outdoors and sports, especially the Miami Dolphins, and his loyalty and light spirt.

“You’d be in a bad mood and he’d just walk in — you’d just be mad as mad as you could be and he’d just crack a smile and make you giggle just over anything, always,” Ben’s brother Derek Dunaway told KOMO.

“He really liked to stand up for his friends,” Principal Chris Schumaker told the Daily Chronicle after a vigil Tuesday night at Ben’s school, where he was a rising junior.

“A lot of the time, his friends would get in trouble because of his shenanigans and somehow he was able to kind of sidestep getting caught. So then towards the end he would kind of say, ‘Mr. Schumaker, it was kind of me, I deserve the detention,’ ” the principal recalled. “And I would say, ‘No, you know they did the crime, they get the time.’ He tried really hard to plea-deal consequences his friends earned. But in the end, I would just say ‘Ben, go back to class it’s okay. They’ll get through it, you’ll get through it. There’s always tomorrow.’ ”

Selena Gomez’s Latest Ads Are Fit and Fierce: ‘I Might Not Be Perfect, but I’m Always Me’

Selena Gomez may have just starred in her second collection for Puma back in January — as a ballerina for the brand’s En Pointe collection, which is a collaboration with the dancers of New York City Ballet — but the actress and singer, 25, is already back with another sporty campaign shoot for the brand.

To complement the ballerina-inspired “En Pointe” collection, Puma recruited the star to model the new Ignite Flash training shoe launching March 15. Gomez posed on a rooftop wearing Puma leggings, a crop top and sports bra, along with the sleek new sneakers.

“I feel confident. I feel empowered. I feel in control. I am brave,” the actress said in a previous statement about working with Puma.

She added, “Yes, I might not be perfect, but I’m always ME. No masks, no filters, just Selena Gomez.”

Looking for more style content? Click here to subscribe to the PeopleStyle Newsletter for amazing shopping discounts, can’t-live-without beauty products and more.

“ flexible style takes her from the gym to the red carpet and to all corners of the globe. Her fearlessness is reflected onto the collection with bold, statement pieces that command attention,” Puma said in a statement.

Gomez isn’t the only star with a new major fashion campaign. Less than a week after her surprise City Hall wedding, model Emily Ratajkowski is debuting her latest Spring 2018 campaign with DKNY.

In a spring campaign video and shoot, Ratajkowski dances and lip syncs through the streets of New York City to the beat of  “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc while sporting the athleisure-inspired collection.

The model’s previously starred in lingerie campaigns for the brand.

While we’ve been waiting for Big Little Lies‘ highly anticipated return for season two, actress Laura Dern has had another project up her sleeve. The star, 51, landed a fragrance campaign alongside Tavi Gevinson and Sasheer Zamat in honor of Kate Spade New York’s new fragrance (which launches today!), called In Full Bloom.

The digital and social media-exclusive ads meaningfully feature a diverse group of women to showcase women at different ages and points in their lives when they’re “in full bloom.”

“We focus on a psychographic instead of a demographic,” said Brian Vander Meyden, vice president of global marketing and prestige sales at The Premiere Group, the distributor of the brand’s fragrances, told WWD. “To have women of three different ages speak to what in full bloom means to them makes unique.”

Meanwhile, Victoria’s Secret Angel Martha Hunt landed a gig with Ramy Brook, and is starring in the fashion brand’s spring/summer 2018 campaign, shot by Sebastian Faena.

When it came to getting the perfect shot, Hunt went all in. The model, 28, posed in a red sundress as someone off camera tossed buckets full of water in her face, which she gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at in an Instagram video which she captioned, “Shoutout to all the models that have been here.”

Gigi Hadid joined forces with Vogue Eyewear again this year, after designing and launching her first capsule collection of sunglasses inspired by her own personal style last summer.

This time around the collection, which is available for purchase at Sunglass Hut, features plenty of Matrix-like tiny sunglass styles and round rocker chic frames just like the ones we’ve been seeing the supermodel sporting lately.

And Frye is celebrating its 115th year of footwear by launching its Hometown Pride campaign with rock-country duo Brothers Osbourne, the first fashion collaboration for the brothers. The campaign highlights local talent and Frye’s deep music roots through a celebration of Nashville’s flourishing scene, which perfectly reflects the personality of this Nashville-based band.

In a release, the brothers said, “Frye is a company deeply rooted in our country’s history. Not to mention the undeniable style and quality.”

Why You Should Always, Always Check Your Sunscreen’s Expiration Date

Picture me, age 14: Blond, blue-eyed and pasty-pale.

It was a scorching hot weekend in June, and I was on a three-day camping trip with my dad. As two fair-skinned, freckle-faced Caucasians, we diligently applied sunscreen — SPF 45 — each morning before emerging from our tent, and every couple of hours thereafter. Coppertone would have been proud.

Sunday evening on the way home, though, I felt red and hot. I could see the signs of sunburn emerging, and I felt tired and dizzy from too much time in the sun. When I awoke on Monday morning, my shoulders and upper back were covered in second-degree burns, oozing, pussy blisters screaming across my skin. Getting dressed was a non-starter — even the lightest, gentlest fabrics felt like daggers on my shoulders. I was a mess.

The problem? Our sunscreen was more than a year expired.

As sunscreen ages, its sun-protection ingredients degrade, reducing its effectiveness. Keeping a fresh bottle on hand, and using it every time you’re out in the sun, will keep you from getting sunburned — which can cause your skin to become dry, discolored, wrinkled and prone to bruising over time — and also help prevent skin cancer, the most common cancer of all.

Thanks to that painfully unforgettable experience, I’ve become relentless in my sunscreen advocacy crusade. You won’t find me preaching about wearing a high SPF — any broad-spectrum sunblock over SPF 15 will do — but you will hear me insist that you check the expiration dates on your sunscreen bottles. I wouldn’t wish the (highly preventable!) burns I experienced on anyone.

The good news is the Food and Drug Administration requires companies to print expiration dates on sunblock, since it’s classified as an over-the-counter drug. And while dermatologists often say that a bottle of sunscreen, usually around 6 ounces, should last only about a week with daily, full-body use, we all know that’s not how the average person uses it. We buy a bottle at the beginning of summer and leave it in the car, or forget it at the beach, or tuck it under the bathroom sink, using it again the next summer (or many summers later) after rediscovering it, never questioning its efficacy.

But now that you know sunscreen expires — with potentially disastrous results — you’ll surely remember to check your bottles.

If your sunblock doesn’t have an expiration date on the bottle for some reason, though, keep Dr. Shari Lipner’s advice in mind.

“Sunscreens are designed to last for three years,” says the assistant professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s Weill graduate school of medicine. “If your bottle does not have a date printed on it, write the date that you purchased it [on the bottle] and make sure to discard after three years.”

She also notes that storing your sunscreen in a hot car can degrade key ingredients, causing it to become less effective. “If the consistency seems off — runny or grainy,” she advises, “discard and buy a new sunscreen.”

And if you do end up with a sunburn this summer, don’t freak out. There are ways to treat it and reduce its more insufferable side effects. First, says Lipner, get out of the sun as soon as possible. Then, take a cool shower or bath, and apply cool compresses to any burned or red areas for 10-15 minutes, four times a day.

“Aloe vera and moisturizer are soothing and will help the skin heal faster,” she says. And you can take ibuprofen to help with swelling. “If it blisters, never pop the blisters. Let them heal on their own to avoid infections,” Lipner says.

Still need a reason to apply (non-expired!) sunscreen regularly? Consider this patient of Lipner’s: “The worst sunburn I ever saw was in a 23-year-old woman who fell asleep on the beach. Her face and body was completely blistered. She did not seek care immediately and her wounds became infected.”

Yikes! Don’t be that woman. Before the days grow hotter, get thee to the drugstore for a fresh bottle of SPF.

Lena Dunham On Body Image: ‘I’ve Always Been Like Rihanna To Myself’

After six seasons of her hit HBO series “Girls,” Lena Dunham says she never quite understood the extensive criticism she got about her nudity on the show.

On Tuesday, the actress and show-runner joined co-producer, Jenni Konner, and moderator, America Ferrera, for an in-depth discussion on the legacy of the show at the Tribeca Film Festival. Ferrera, recalling her own experience starring on the ABC show “Ugly Betty,” asked Konner and Dunham how they felt about the reactions to Dunham’s “non-traditional” body.

“Men, generally, were very angry that she felt comfortable showing her body,” Konner commented.

“In the third season, a reporter from The Wrap raised his hand at [a press conference] and asked ‘Why do you show your body so much?’ And I had a rage spiral.”

For Dunham, the vitriolic reaction to her body confidence seemed to stem from the fact that she didn’t feel she was being “so brave” by doing nude scenes.

“I’ve always been like Rihanna to myself. Like, I just have a great time with my own body,” the actress explained.

“I think people were so ready to believe that I was, like, jumping past some massive hurdle in order to get naked on television. That’s not where my fear lies. If that’s what scared me, I wouldn’t do it every week.”

Dunham added that she got more criticism from men and women who “also didn’t have perfect bodies” than anyone else.

“Some of the most love and compliments I’ve gotten have been from women who are considered to have perfect and beautiful bodies, who I think feel the constant pressure to maintain those bodies,” Dunham added.

“They seemed to have felt freed in some way by seeing me just say ‘fuck it.’”

Now that “Girls” is over, Dunham has plans to focus on her online feminist newsletter, Lenny Letter. She and Konner announced plans to expand the newsletter into a traveling variety show this May

David Cassidy Reveals He Is Battling Dementia: ‘A Part of Me Always Knew This Was Coming’

David Cassidy is battling dementia.

The 66-year-old actor, widely known for his starring role as Keith Partridge on the 1970s series The Partridge Family, reveals to PEOPLE that he is fighting the memory loss disease.

Cassidy, who watched his grandfather battle the disease and witnessed his mother “disappear” into dementia until she died at age 89, tells PEOPLE of his diagnosis: “I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming.”

Of his mother’s struggles, Cassidy recalls: “In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room. … I feared I would end up that way.”

Now that he’s come to terms with his condition, Cassidy has made the decision to stop touring as a musician to concentrate on his health and happiness. “I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions,” he says. “I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”

Cassidy’s revelation follows a roller coaster of personal ups and downs that the actor has faced in the past decade, including a show in Agoura Hills, California, this past weekend where Cassidy repeatedly struggled to remember lyrics to songs he had been singing for nearly 50 years.

In November 2010, he was charged with a DUI and was subsequently charged with the same offense in August 2013 and January 2014. A month after his third arrest, his wife, Sue Shifrin-Cassidy, filed for divorce. In February 2015, the actor filed for bankruptcy and was charged following his hit-and-run eight months later in October 2015.

The ’70s teen heartthrob has also battled substance abuse issues, including a stint in rehab in 2014.

Cassidy, who received an Emmy nomination for his appearance on Police Story in 1978, was most recently seen on TV in a 2013 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

3-Minute Abs: Achieving the Look You’ve Always Wanted in Only 3 Minutes a Day

3-Minute Abs: Achieving the Look You’ve Always Wanted in Only 3 Minutes a Day

Do you think you need special equipment to train your abdominal muscles? Do you think the models you see in fitness magazines look like that all the time? Kurt Brungardt, author of The Complete Book of Abs, dispels those myths in this tiny but information-packed book. He has a radically different idea about exercising abdominal muscles: instead of working them all at once, he believes, you should divide the muscles into three distinct regions–upper, lower, and sides–and work them for three minutes each on separate days. The exercises he recommends are interesting and challenging, and he even includes a few dietary tips, noting that exercise alone won’t give someone the much-coveted “washboard” look.

8 Things You Do That Will Always Be Creepy. Always.

Creeping. It can be a daily struggle for those who are shy, introverted, or horrified by the idea of human contact. But we’ve all been creepy at some point in our lives, and here’s how.

The following creeping was performed in a controlled environment by a trained professional. Do not creep like this at home.

Big thanks to HuffPost’s own Suzy Strutner, Kate Bratskier, Sahaj Kohli, Julee Wilson, Patty Doma and Jenna Amatulli for letting me creep them out. And another big thanks to Tiara Chiaramonte for photographing and being witness to so much creepiness.

Why I Always Ask for Photos of Just the Two of Us

A few weeks ago, we met my friend at the local river preserve for our annual family photos. We wrangled the kids, stashed M&M bribes and emergency extra clothes in the car, and hoped for the best. Being a photographer myself, I had scheduled the shoot during the golden hour, which of course coincides with bedtime. Call me crazy, but I’d rather deal with meltdowns than bad lighting.

Just like every year, I was quick to request photos of my husband and me in addition to the whole-family shots. I like the reminder that our marriage is a separate entity, a force to be reckoned with. A few times during the evening, we strapped the boys in the stroller and ventured into the tall grass, just the two of us. For the most part, they sat and watched patiently, only occasionally crying out in boredom.

We tuned them out for five minutes and kept our eyes locked on each other, purposely and intentionally — because even though we don’t always practice this perfectly, we want our kids to see Us.

“Us” being husband and wife, two people who still love each other after almost 11 years together.

It would be easy to let these kids swallow us whole if we let our guard down for half a second. They are young and needy right now, and it would be easy to save everything marriage-related for after bedtime. It would be easy to let them interrupt every conversation, to let them leave toys in our bedroom, to let them be in every single picture.

It would be easy to let them destroy Us on some days.

But if we want our kids to respect our marriage, we have to let them see our marriage. We have to let them see our date nights, see us kiss in the kitchen, see us fight and make up. The only way they’re going to see Us is if we let them. Or, in the case of annual family photos, if we force them to watch from the sidelines.

Some days I think our marriage has never felt more difficult than it does right now. In this demanding phase of parenting two little kids, we have to fight for our marriage constantly — for quiet, for date nights, for intimacy of any kind. Our days are full and messy and exhausting, and it’s all too easy to give our marriage the leftovers, the two percent of energy we have left at the end of the night.

We deserve better.

Some people might think it’s weird that we take family portraits every year, but I love documenting our kids at this age, because they are changing so much. Last year, our youngest was barely a peanut in my belly, and now he’s eating butternut squash from a booster seat. In 20 years, it will be nice to look back at these pictures and remember this year, the year that our toddler turned 3 and said the funniest things, the year that our sweet second baby rocked his gummy smile.

This was the year we became parents of two, and it was damn hard and exhausting as hell, but look at us. We survived; we relayed; we fought and made up 200 times. We made mistakes and apologized and forgave each other and slammed a few doors and offered grace upon grace upon grace. We argued at 3 a.m. over whose turn it was to get up, we watched our boys become best friends, and we basically became parents all over again. We re-examined our expectations, had our fair share of living room therapy, and learned to love each other a little bit better.

It has not been easy. Some days the pressure and tension in this house could blow up the moon. But even on those days, somehow — by the grace of God — we find our way back.

And this is why I always ask for photos of just my husband and me.

Because in 20 years, when we look back at these pictures, I will be glad that we stopped for five minutes to remember Us.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Recently, my wife and I used the drive-thru window at our local bank. I love the drive-thru because sometimes, I’m just too lazy to go inside. With the drive-thru, I don’t have to move from my seat and can do all of my banking transactions through that little drawer under the window.

Isn’t it amazing how many lazy inventions we’ve developed over the years? We have moving sidewalks, remote controls, and even clap-off lights. The one that tickles me the most is the Lazy Susan turntable. It sits in the middle of the table and rotates so that we don’t have to exert our arms an extra six inches to pick up the mashed potatoes.

But I digress.

As I rolled down my window to pass my deposit to the teller, I heard a harsh vibrating sound outside. If you’re like me, you are accustomed to the normal sounds that your car makes. When you hear an odd or new sound, you know that it’s not normal.

I put my car in neutral thinking that the vibration might be related to the car being in gear. This, by the way, is the kind of mechanical knowledge one gets with a undergraduate degree in psychology. The vibrating sound immediately stopped. I then put the car back in gear and the vibrating sound returned. True to my training in Pavlovian responses, I repeated the sequence several times as I replicated these significant research results:

Car in gear = vibrating sound
Car in neutral = no vibrating sound

I began to salivate… at the thought of buying a new car.

You see, my Honda Pilot is 10 years old but it looks great and runs great. I have no reason to buy a new car except that my car is old and I know it won’t last forever. But this new vibrating sound may be my car’s version of the death rattles.

I began to wonder if my car would even make it back home that day. Would I need a tow? And how would I sell a car with a harsh vibrating sound like this one? I needed to be certain that my car was dying before I started looking at new cars online.

I repeated my diagnostic test once more and then looked at my wife. She has an undergraduate engineering degree but it was in computer science, not mechanical engineering. So, I was not looking at her for a diagnosis but for an affirmation of the obvious declining health of my car.

“Do you hear that?” I asked.

She nodded.

Then she casually said, “I wonder if what you’re hearing is the man working on that metal sign over there?”

I stopped my diagnostic tests and simultaneously, stopped salivating.

The vibrating sound started again and then stopped. But my car was in neutral the whole time.

Oh.

Apparently, when someone uses a saw to cut metal, it sounds exactly like a 10-year-old car dying… at least in my limited experience as a paramechanic.

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever been absolutely certain of something only to find out that it was something else altogether? I suspect it happens more regularly than we’d like to admit. And the worst times to experience these certain uncertainties are when they relate to the words and actions of others.

For instance…

… out of simple curiosity, our spouse or partner asks us why we were late getting home and we’re sure that he or she doesn’t trust us.

… the cashier at the grocery store says we owe more than we expect and we’re sure she is wrong even though we really just misread the label on the shelf.

… our boss allows a coworker to take some additional time off due to a confidential family crisis and we’re sure the boss is just being preferential.

These are the “vibrating sounds” of life and we often misdiagnose them. Sometimes, our misdiagnosis is due to our own experiences or prejudices. Other times it’s simply because we aren’t skilled in analyzing the situation correctly. In other words, we never got adequate training in life mechanics.

The book Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson is a wonderful resource to help us realize that human interactions can be difficult and that we can often misread the process unless we are willing to get our hands dirty and break down the communication machine.

The most critical step is listening — not just listening to the words but to the story behind the words. The backstory is where we learn about other people so we truly understand where they are coming from.

When I heard a vibrating sound in my car that day, I only had one piece of the story — the sound. Once I listened to my wife and paid closer attention to all the clues around me, I was able to understand the whole story.

Things in life are not always what they seem to be. People are not always how they seem to be. And it’s usually a great relief to find out that our situation doesn’t require a complete overhaul after all. Instead, often, we just need to listen a bit more carefully.

What Are Those Aviator Sunglasses the Kardashians Are Always Wearing?

People who watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians with a fashion lens might have noticed something going on—nearly every single female has worn the same oversize pair of jet-black aviator sunglasses at some point.

kardashians-black-aviator-sunglasses-porsche

The clan hasn’t ever said exactly what pair they’re rocking, but they appear to be a Porsche style with removable lenses (specifically, P8478). The shades are available in a few sizes, but the oversize fit all the women rock likely means they have the largest option (69 millimeters).

khloe-kardashian-black-aviator-sunglasses-close-up

A zoomed-in shot of Khloe’s pair shows that they definitely have the small hooks that allow the lens to be exchanged for other colors. Compared with the Porsche P8478 style, available now, it’s kinda hard to argue they’re not the same.

The Most Meaningful Careers Aren’t Always Blissful

2015-05-29-1432885971-6506740-WillWorkForBlissPicSmall.png

Like most millennials raised on the “world is your oyster” parental movement, I graduated college thinking that career would be one big party. Stepping off into not-so-adult adulthood with an empty bank account and a shoebox full of graduation cards, I might as well have tattooed Joseph Campbell’s words on my heart:

“Follow your bliss and the world will open doors where there were only walls.”

Naturally, starting my own life coaching business at 23 would be a fairy tale. I imagined my schedule book miraculously filling with “soul mate-like” clients and my PayPal retirement fund blossoming overnight. I had found my purpose, by golly — my bliss — which meant the success part should follow suit, right? Piece. Of. Cake.

Wrong. Love her as I may have, my business gave me no sympathy (and certainly no cake).

My lovely purpose gave zero hoots about: the post-recession economy, my student loans, my spells of inspiration drought, nor my waves of childlike ambiguity. Like a painfully quiet spectator, she watched with indifference as I could barely pay my bills. As I reached for the discounter shampoo in the toiletry aisle, my purpose couldn’t even be bothered about my increasingly frizzy hair.

Nothing had ever felt so right and yet boy did I ever want to shake that Joseph Campbell like a prophetic rag doll. “I’m living my calling, Joseph… but where’s the flippin’ bliss?”

My purpose gave only the rudest of silence.

The Myth of Bliss
These days, I think bliss-following should probably come with a more accurate disclaimer:

“So you want a career that flutters your heart and floods your veins with pride like golden honey? Follow away! Side-effects may include: depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, insomnia, weight loss, weight gain, mania, vitamin D deficiency, cystic acne, shame and embarrassment, loneliness, brain fog, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, relationship issues, hair challenges, identity crisis, and/or extreme poverty.”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m still “Team Bliss'” biggest cheerleader, it’s just that everyone left out the second half of the story. The part that tells us that bliss is like lusting after the most beautiful woman in the room who just so happens to be challenging and cruel and — oh yeah, totally out of your league.

Because despite what all of those endearing graduation cards might have said, passion-chasing was not a foxtrot down a hall of open doors. If only I had known that following my bliss would force me to become exactly what I’m capable of…

Growing Pains
There’s this assumption in many a self-help circle that if following your bliss is messy, then you must be doing something wrong. That when we are living the “right life” it should feel fantastic. And look like over-night success. And smell like fresh-cut roses on a Sunday afternoon (not “I haven’t showered in two days because entrepreneurship is hard” smell). Some would even say that when we are living our authentic mission — “the life we were born for” — we should attract abundance and happiness and all kinds of karmic loveliness. My generation in particular is known for that sort of “stubborn optimism” that success will eventually find us.

It turns out I’m not entitled to a comfortable life. It turns out, bliss or not, the universe doesn’t owe me riches or happiness (not even life! — I learned, after an earth-shattering, near-death experience). The only thing I am entitled to is the opportunity to become the person I came here to be. And while that might sound like a pretty lame birthday present from life, I’ve come to see it as the most beautiful gift of all.

Maybe purposeful work is supposed to be tough. Maybe “hard” doesn’t always mean you’re on the wrong path, but is sometimes a sign you’re on the best path. Maybe you don’t just develop a career… maybe the greatest career will develop you. We’re not just chasing job titles, salaries, or recognition, we are growing — growing into the people capable of mastering our dreams. Into the truest, happiest, most brilliant version of ourselves. Into professionals: people who can sustain the prizes we crave and who can love themselves and love their work with their whole darn hearts. That stuff ain’t pretty.

Career is Hard, Generation Y
I remember my 23-year-old self — already defeated by career-building, reading HuffPost in her PJs at 3 p.m. on a Monday, contemplating the existential woes we millennials call “quarter-life crisis” — and I wish that I could tell her a “career-knight in shining armor” isn’t coming.

“Don’t wait for your dream job to appear on Monster.com. Don’t pray to be discovered by a publisher or validated by ‘likes’ or for the magic SEO Gods to deliver your golden opportunities. You will never have the perfect resume or bio. You will never be good enough or smart enough or ready enough to pick up the phone. It will never be the ‘just right’ time to quit the job or start the blog or go get your booty out there.”

Today I know your purpose is not your savior. It knows exactly what you’re capable of and would expect nothing less. Your purpose will let you fail — often publicly, sometimes miserably — until you learn to see your own strength. Your purpose will make you sit and stew and brew in those excuses until you see the mind’s folly, until you see your own truth.

Because your purpose wants you to have your dreams, but only like the parent who lets you ride your bike solo before you think you’re ready. Who doesn’t always let you win. Who sometimes makes you wait your turn. Who knows that a little broken heart today will let you love even bigger tomorrow.

Because It’s Worth It
Today, I love my career with every ounce of my being because it broke my heart (a million plus one times).

Hammering nail after nail into that foundation until the day those few lousy boards became a house. (Became a home. Became a village.)

Until the day I took a chance on myself. (Until the day they took a chance on me.)

Until the day my quiet spark became two. (Became three. Became a blaze.)

Until the day the person I thought I knew became the person I had always wanted to know.

Yep, that must be the real miracle, Joseph Campbell. You were right all along: bliss hand-delivered me opportunity after opportunity — to become my own hero.

So cue the panic attacks. Don’t forget the rejection letters, sweaty palms, and the very worst of hair days. Just give me a real 21st century career, please: true and hard, but so very beautiful.

These Dazzling Long-Exposure Photos Prove That Slow Travel Is Always Worth It

k

There’s much to be said for slow travel. Taking extra time to savor your surroundings — without racing to catch the next bus or hustle toward the next tour — is often the best way to truly get to know a place as a traveler, not as a tourist.

This point was proven yet again when HuffPost asked the Snapwire photographer community for the best long-exposure views they’ve ever captured. Long exposure photography takes time, patience and a willingness to go slowly, much like slow travel itself. And from New Zealand to Lake Tahoe, these views show that no matter where you go, taking an extra breath and savoring an extra moment is always worth it.

Kardashian Throwback Photo Proves Kim Has Always Been Camera Ready

Turns out Kim Kardashian loved the camera long before she became the internet’s selfie queen.

In a throwback photo posted to Kris Jenner’s Instagram on Friday, an adolescent Kim poses alongside Kourtney Kardashian and two friends in a very model-esque pose.

Work it, girl.

All these years later, Kim and Kourtney’s younger sister Kendall Jenner actually is a veritable supermodel. Which makes us wonder: might there be some fun old footage still to be unearthed that hints at her future walking the runway? Aside from old episodes of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” that is.

Paris: A Holiday That is Always With You

2015-05-19-1432074578-4851506-HP_1_IMG_9603_2.jpg

Every time I visit Paris, I think about the way Hemingway referred to the City of Light as a “Moveable Feast.” But I have to admit that I like the Russian translation of the title even more, “A Holiday That is Always with You.” When a few weeks ago I returned from a trip to Paris, a surprise package was waiting at my door with the book, Why LA? Porquoi Paris? An Artistic Pairing of Two Iconic Cities, by Diane Ratican. And, if that was not enough of a coincidence, the next day, I went to Paramount Studios to attend the third annual Paris Photo LA, the prestigious international photo fair with its home base at the Grand Palais in Paris.

2015-05-19-1432074632-8129173-HP_2_fountainbleu.jpg

So, let me share with you my recent adventures in and around the City of Light, where I was a guest of the Paris Region Tourist Board at the Grand hotel du Palais Royal, across from the Museé de Louvre, an ideal place to stay for any art aficionado. My hosts also arranged my first ever trip to Chateau de Fontainebleau, the imperial residence which Napoleon considered to be “the real home of kings, a house of centuries.” I was especially intrigued to see there the relatively modest — by size — private apartment of Napoleon himself. With its sprawling parks and gardens, the Chateau was the splendid home to French royalty from the 12th century until the abdication of Napoleon III in 1870. There is so much to see and to experience in Fontainebleau; one should plan to spend at least a whole day there.

2015-05-19-1432075266-1797048-HP_4_VAUX.jpg

The same day, we drove to resplendent Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte, which is only one hour away from Paris. In 1641, it was purchased by Nicolas Fouquet, who, several years later, became the Minister of Finance for Louis XIV. Fouquet had grandiose plans for his estate. At one time, it was said that Fouquet employed 18,000 workers to maintain his gardens and rebuild his castle. Among them were the famous architect Le Vau, the landscape designer le Notre, and artist Le Brun.

2015-05-19-1432075338-4624421-HP_3_VAUXIMG_5453.jpg

In a tragic turn of events, after lavish festivities to celebrate the opening of his estate, Fouquet — the richest man in France after the King — was arrested under a false accusation of misappropriation of public funds. Voltaire famously said, “On 17 August [1661], at 6 in the evening, Fouquet was the King of France; at two in the morning, he was nobody.” In 1875, after many years of neglect, the Chateau was sold to Alfred Sommier, and today, it is administered by his descendants and regularly opens to the public.

2015-05-19-1432075399-716367-HP_5_PHILHARMONIE.jpg

Back in Paris, I spent a good amount of time getting familiar with two new major cultural projects, Jean Nouvel’s Philharmonie de Paris and Frank Gehry’s Fondation Louis Vuitton. Even four months after its official opening, the Philharmonie building is still 20 percent incomplete. The building is impressive, but not particularly likeable. But, what’s important is that it has become a big success with the public from Day One, mostly due to its splendid acoustics and reasonably priced tickets. On the ground floor, there is an exhibition space, currently devoted to David Bowie; the next exhibition will feature the art of Marc Chagall.

2015-05-19-1432075454-1265309-HP_6_FLV.jpg

My visit to Fondation Louis Vuitton, the translucent glass fantasy by Frank Gehry in Boulogne Forest, made me forget the splendor of Fontainebleau and Chateau de Vaux. At the age of 86, Gehry has delivered his most adventurous, most ambitious architectural project. There is a seamless interaction between the outdoor and indoor spaces, which makes one think about the influence of Los Angeles modernist architecture.

2015-05-19-1432075513-3170910-HP_7_FLVext.jpg

One climbs up several levels of the building, discovering numerous terraces and patios. And, with every twist and turn, yet another view of Boulogne Forest with Paris in the distance is revealed. And, for the first time in his practice, Gehry chose to reveal the architectural and engineering structure of his building, the structure that made me think about the gorgeous skeleton of a gigantic dinosaur. Even compared to his celebrated Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and his Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Fondation Louis Vuitton shines as Gehry’s absolute best.

The Future Is Always Here

Given the state of the world today it’d be totally understandable if you were dreading the new year and whatever might happen next, instead of feeling joyful and full of anticipation.

Yet a new year has a very special effect: It makes us feel like we have the chance to start over, to do things better this time, to make amends, even to right all the wrongs in the world.

So why does it take a new year to make us feel like this? Why is it that for 364 days we live with regret, doubt, holding on to what we did wrong and wishing we hadn’t, or dreaming of a future that doesn’t exist?

No matter how hard we want to, there’s one thing we can never do and that’s change the past. We can weep, beat our fists against the wall, eat bags of cookies to assuage the guilt, but none of this will make the slightest bit of difference and certainly won’t make us feel any better. The past is gone, over, no more.

Continuing to wish that our actions or words had been different means we’re really not here in the present, we’re living in what-could-have-been or what-might-have-been or if-only. And if the past is too painful or even too boring then we switch over to the future, that place of infinite potential that we want to believe could be real, like wishful thinking or a daydream. We live in what-might-be or what-could-be.

Of course we can learn from the past. Often the most painful experience turns out to be our best teacher; we can even feel gratitude for the experience as it taught us so much. And memories can be like comfortable old shoes we are reluctant to part with. We can certainly put them on now and then, but we don’t have to hang out there on a permanent basis.

Instead we can change our attitude. Fully accepting that the past is irreversible and the future doesn’t exist means we can actually be in the present moment. What a relief! Finally we can just be here and now. Wow! What a revelation!

Each day is unique. It has never happened before and it will never happen again. And we have no idea what will actually occur.

What a great day just to be here now! The perfect day to let the past rest where it is and let the future take care of itself. As is every day. To experience just this moment, to pay attention to the colors, sounds, smells and sensations; to pay attention to your feelings, to other people’s feelings. And to make this day, this week, this month, and this new year, one of beauty and tenderness.

Are you hanging out in the past, the future, or are you here now? Do comment below. You can receive notice of our blogs by checking Become a Fan at the top.

17 Reasons Mary Poppins Will Always Be The World’s Best Nanny

“Mary Poppins” premiered in theaters 50 years ago this week, on Aug. 26, 1964. The Disney film, directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Julie Andrews, soon became a success (it was the most profitable film of 1965) and received rave reviews from critics: “I find [Mary Poppins] irresistible. Plenty of other adults will feel the same way. And, needless to say, so will the kids,” Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times. “Mary Poppins” won five Oscars at the 37th annual Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”).

Beyond those accolades, however, is its legacy: If “Mary Poppins” achieved one thing, it’s that even today, 50 years later, the film industry (and probably the real world) has yet to find a nanny like her. And that’s despite countless attempts by the likes of Scarlett Johansson (“The Nanny Diaries”), Emma Thompson (“Nanny McPhee”) or the late Robin Williams (“Mrs. Doubtfire”).

However, no one has managed to unseat Mary Poppins and take her job. Here are a few reasons that explain why she is so unique.

1. Her ability to organize bags …

2. … and the speed with which she can organize

3. She’s always prepared …

4. … but aware that there’s always room for improvement

5. She can go up the stairs without any effort …

6. … and is basically one step away from being able to teleport

7. Because she pays attention to small details …

8. and can move her head like this.

9. She’s capable of making a group of men dance this way …

10. … and with a single movement, she’ll leave your mouth agape

11. She’s never at a loss for words …

12. … and not afraid to speak her mind

13. She knows the secret of life …

14. … and doesn’t judge things by their appearance

15. She’s good at keeping secrets …

16. … and snaps her fingers like this.

17. So let’s applaud Mary Poppins, still the best at 50

9 Reasons Meryl Streep Will Always Be Our Leading Lady

Happy birthday, Meryl Streep! Hollywood’s indisputable sweetheart is 65 today and we can’t believe it. Not only is she looking fantastic, but the woman is on fire. Over 35 years since her first Oscar win as a newcomer to Tinseltown, Queen M was a nominee for the 18th, yes, 18th, time at this year’s Oscar’s for her performance in “August Osage County,” making her the most nominated actress in history. And though she’s a bit older than the average Hollywood actress, she’s defying all odds, still being one of the industry’s most sought-after actresses with several upcoming films in the works.

We get it, Mer. You’re unstoppable. Here are nine reasons Meryl will always be the woman of our dreams. (Is there anything she can’t do?)

1. She’s one smart cookie.
She’s played a prime minister and an Editor-in-Chief on screen, but Streep would have been just as successful if Hollywood hadn’t come knocking. She attended both Vassar College and Yale’s School of Drama. In fact, she reportedly had applied for law school, but ended up oversleeping the morning of her interview and took it as a sign that she was destined for something else.

2. Her many accents.
From a sassy Southerner, to British iron lady, to a straight-talking nun in the Bronx, the Jersey-made actress can pull off any, we mean any, accent like a native. Here’s the proof.

3. She’s charitable.
Her enviable designer duds from “The Devil Wears Prada” were auctioned off for charity at her suggestion. She donated her entire salary ($ 1 million) from “The Iron Lady” to the National Women’s History museum. And recently it was uncovered that Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, have donated around $ 1 million to a variety of causes, including Meals On Wheels and the Coalition for the Homeless, quietly through their charity, the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts. Saint Meryl?

4. Her body confidence.
There’s nothing sexier than confidence and well, Meryl just wears it well. “I wasted so many years thinking I wasn’t pretty enough and why didn’t I have Jessica Lange’s body or someone else’s legs?” Streep said in a 2009 interview. “What a waste of time. Now I’m enjoying the tatters of what’s left and I’m very happy. Part of it is having beautiful strong daughters and hearing them whine about what’s wrong with them. I’m like, ‘Shut up! You’re lovely!'”

5. She’s grounded.
You won’t see any diva-like behavior here. “I try to lead as ordinary a life as I can,” Streep has been quoted as saying. “You can’t get spoiled if you do your own ironing.”

Perhaps it was her humble start that keeps her so down to earth. Streep waited tables in her 20s and once didn’t even have a place to sleep at night.

“On my very, very first trip to London I went around busking to earn a few pennies to afford some food and overnight accommodation,” she told Closer Magazine. “One night, when I hadn’t made enough, I actually slept in the open in Green Park under a tree. The view from the park was of the Ritz hotel, and I vowed to myself that night that I was going to stay there one day -– and I have.”

6. She has a kickass marriage.
meryl streep don gummer

Streep has been married over 35 years to sculptor Don Gummer, avoiding the “Oscar Curse” many times. Streep has said the key to her marriage has been communication about everything, no matter how small and to embrace your differences. “I go to the theatre a lot,” she told The Independent. “My husband doesn’t care if he never goes to the theatre but I don’t berate him because he doesn’t want to go to the theatre … we’re different.”

7. She’s embracing aging, gracefully.
Streep has had some of her most challenging and memorable roles after turning 50, though the majority of roles in Hollywood are for younger women. “The good thing about getting older is that when they actually do cast you it’s often something interesting,” Streep said in an interview with Good Housekeeping. “You have to embrace getting older. Life is precious… each day is a gift.”

Earlier this year Streep was honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and said, “”I feel like I’m an example now in my dotage of the fact that you just can’t put those old gals out to pasture. We’ve got a lot of stuff still to say.” You go girl!

8. She’s a feminist.
meryl streep hillary clinton

She’s no doubt played some strong female figures — Britain’s only female prime minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” to culinary genius Julia Child — but she still thinks women are underrepresented in Hollywood and beyond. “‘It would be nice to have a woman President. I think half the Senate should be women, half of Parliament, half the ruling mullahs” she once said. It seems she’s a big fan of Hillary Clinton too.

Streep has also been outspoken about the sexualization of women in Hollywood. Following “the period when a woman was attractive and marriageable or something—not ‘marriageable.’ F******* I guess is the word…they really didn’t know what to do with you…” She said in an interview with Vanity Fair. Streep credits her success to not being pigeonholed in the same way.

9. She’s perfectly comfortable in her own skin, and that’s what makes her a great role model.
“For young women, I would say, don’t worry so much about your weight. Girls spend way too much time thinking about that, and there are better things,” Streep said after being awarded an honorary degree earlier this year. “For young men, and women, too, what makes you different or weird, that’s your strength. Everyone tries to look a cookie-cutter kind of way, and actually the people who look different are the ones who get picked up. I used to hate my nose. Now, I don’t.”

Well, there you have it.

Always and Forever

When the going gets tough… In the Irish town of Carrickwell, with its lush, endlessly rolling hills and authentic country tranquility, three women’s lives are anything but calm. There’s Mel, a compulsively ambitious mother/publicity manager at a high-powered PR firm — living proof that balancing motherhood and a full-time job is no walk in the park. The hot-headed, indomitable Cleo, just out of college with a degree in hotel management, would like nothing better than to modernize and revive her family’s dwindling hotel — but faces a constant battle with her old-fashioned parents. And finally, there’s the stylish, sweet-tempered Daisy, a self-consciously curvy fashion buyer for an upscale clothing boutique, who has been struggling — and longing — to have a baby with her absolutely perfect boyfriend. Although unconnected, these three women have one thing in common: they all need a break from their stressful lives. …these tough gals hit the nearest spa! So each one sets out for a little R & R at the new Clouds Hill spa, built by an American woman with her own secret turmoil. It is there that Mel, Cleo, and Daisy meet — their worlds and troubles colliding — forming an intimate bond that helps them to realize what matters most in life, always and forever.
