Joyce Azria has proven adept at adaptation, having grown up in her family’s BCBG Max Azria business, then exiting in 2016 to launch her own direct-to-consumer young contemporary brand Avec Les Filles as consumer preferences shifted to branded, designer-driven, omnichannel merchandise.
Now she’s delving deeper into the online space — specifically Amazon — with a new, under-$ 50 basics brand called Rohb, which made its debut in beta mode on the e-commerce behemoth this week, with its own shoppable site coming soon.

Perry Ellis Partners With Amazon Alexa

Perry Ellis is tapping into the voice activation market.
The men’s wear brand has teamed with Amazon to create an “Ask Perry Ellis” skill, or a set of built-in capabilities, that works with the voice-activated Amazon Alexa device to offer styling suggestions for various occasions.
“Over the years, we’ve seen men’s dressing habits evolve from wearing clothes for one specific occasion to the need to wear clothes for many different occasions,” said Melissa Worth, Perry Ellis’ president, before presenting the new technology on Thursday morning at The Standard Hotel in New York’s East Village. “At Perry Ellis, we are committed to providing solutions that are going to help him feel comfortable, look stylish and be appropriately dressed for any occasion on his calendar.”
According to Worth, after surveying a group of men, the team at Perry Ellis found that 81 percent of them had challenges getting dressed and 45 percent said the biggest struggle was getting dressed for a specific event and making sure they were appropriately dressed.
Perry Ellis is hoping to remedy this with “Ask Perry Ellis,” which allows men to ask Alexa what to wear for a particular event — the skill is programmed to respond to 150 different occasions ranging

Amazon Launches Private Accessories Label The Fix

CHEAP FIX: Amazon has unveiled a new venture to bring affordable, fashion accessories to its masses.
The Fix is the online giant’s new private label of shoes and handbags based on designer-level trends, with handbags beginning at $ 49 and shoes starting at $ 69.
The range became available for purchase Tuesday, and was celebrated that evening with a cocktail event at the Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan.
Amazon Fashion’s director Kate Dimmock spoke to the new line’s purpose: “Our customer is really looking for a great hit of style — something that’s on-trend. They have an accessible price point and are well made. That was really a challenge. We are all about a breadth of selection, it’s really a key part of Amazon’s identity, and another key aspect for us with new styles releasing monthly.”
Dimmock’s staff of market editors explore the fashion industry to hunt for trends. They have targeted satin for daytime, platforms and fashion sneakers.
Dimmock abstractly referenced the Amazon “customer” with considerable repetition. But when pressed for demographics about the site’s target fashion audience, she demurred: “It’s not about how old she is, her income, where she is. She’s everyone, she’s everywhere — so it’s really about finding someone who has the

The Blend of the Traditional and Contemporary Dominates Amazon India Fashion Week

NEW DELHI, India — While the fashion  silhouette changed this season at the 29th edition of Amazon India Fashion Week Winter 2017, held in association with Maybelline New York, the shows opened with a focus on how to blend traditional craft with contemporary design.
The first show of the week, featuring 13 designers, focused on using handlooms in modern fashion. A collaborative effort between the Fashion Design Council of India and the Handloom School supported by retailer Good Earth showcased work by designers including Rohit Bal, Rajesh Pratap, Singh Suket Dhir, Raw Mango, Akaaro, Antar-Agni, Eka, Pero and Urvashi Kaur.
As Sunil Sethi, president of the Fashion Design Council of India, observed, the event dedicated to India’s handlooms and textiles did indeed make a “giant leap in the legacy to promote the homespun.”
Anita Lal, founder of The Good Earth Co., said, “We’ve never participated in fashion shows. But we realized that in order to popularize the concept of handloom it has to be seen as something desirable, something that has a certain appeal to younger people, which is why we did the fashion show and sponsored.”
Textile minister Smriti Irani, who was at the event, observed that the industry itself was going through

CFDA Stays Positive Despite Loss of Amazon Sponsorship

New York Fashion Week: Men’s may have wrapped up its most successful edition to date last week but it’s already facing a hurdle for next season: Amazon Fashion, which has been the principal sponsor since the shows started two years ago, has ended its association.
The decision comes even though the web giant is making an evermore aggressive push into fashion, and views it as one of its fastest-growing categories.
Despite Amazon’s move, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, organizers of the shows, is putting a positive spin on things, pointing to the ongoing commitment of at least two of the other sponsors — Cadillac and men’s grooming brand Axe.
“This season of NYFW: Men’s was a creative and commercial success,” the CFDA said in a statement to WWD. “We look forward to the next season taking place July 10 to 13. NYFW: Men’s continues to thrive because of the ongoing commitment of partners such as Cadillac and Axe.”
Samsung is also a sponsor and its participation will continue, said Mark Beckham, business director of Fashion Week for CFDA.
Beckman stressed that even though Amazon’s two-year contract with the men’s shows has ended, the company continues to work with the organization on other projects. He also

Amazon Is Running Out Of Dystopian Books That Eerily Reflect Our Present Political Moment

George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984. Sinclair Lewis’s It Can’t Happen Here. Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism.

One by one, classic books depicting dystopian dictatorships ― and the factors that allow such governments to “happen here” ― have been shooting to the top of Amazon’s hourly-updated best-seller lists, and, in some cases, selling out on the site, leaving publishers rushing to fulfill demand.

It’s a fitting sequel to the dire literary warnings bandied about regarding a potential Donald J. Trump presidency during, and immediately after, the long campaign. Authors such as J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin compared Trump’s promised vision of America with the darkest dystopian elements of their own works, and critics invoked the chilling alternative histories The Plot Against America by Philip Roth and The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick (as well as the Amazon series based on it) as warnings of what could come to pass.

Now that the Trump presidency has actually commenced, interest in such literary examinations of totalitarianism and malevolent dictatorships has only appeared to grow. Trump’s first week in office was packed with overtly false statements from his press surrogates, as well as drastic executive orders that many Americans saw as evidence that his time in office would match the least optimistic projections. Following massive protests and federal court orders responding to his ban on travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, these orders were reportedly flouted, leading experts to warn of a constitutional crisis

Meanwhile, just as Rep. John Lewis’ award-winning graphic memoir series March rocketed up the Amazon charts and sold out on the site after the civil rights icon sparred with Trump earlier this month, classic works of fiction and nonfiction that depict oppressive regimes have taken up residence at the top of Amazon’s best-seller list.

George Orwell’s 1984, which portrays a dystopian government’s use of disinformation and revised history to solidify power, sold out on Amazon last week after it saw sales explode by upwards of 9,500 percent following the inauguration, according to Penguin Random House’s Craig Burke. (The publisher’s Signet imprint puts out editions of classics, including 1984.) Animal Farm, another political satire by Orwell, has also seen higher demand, Burke told HuffPost in an email. “Last week, Signet ordered an additional 300,000 copies of Orwell’s novels,” Burke said ― a number which includes a 75,000-copy reprint of 1984 announced last week.

He added, “We printed last week about half the copies of 1984 that we sell in a typical year.”

It Can’t Happen Here, a less widely read classic by Sinclair Lewis, has also been selling strongly for Signet. Described as the satirical, yet unsettlingly realistic narrative of “a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press,” the book’s eerie resonance with current political events has made it another popular choice in recent weeks. About 45,000 copies of Signet’s It Can’t Happen Here have been sold since Inauguration Day, said Penguin Random House ― and as of Monday, it had also sold out on Amazon:

Perhaps most jarring is the sudden popularity of Hannah Arendt’s 1951 doorstop The Origins of Totalitarianism, a hefty work of political philosophy that traces the roots of both the Nazi and Stalinist regimes. It’s not a light read, given both the subject matter and its 500-plus page count. Nonetheless, the book ascended the Amazon chart and, as of Monday, was sold out on the site. “This,” wrote Jezebel’s Hannah Gold, “is extremely metal.”

Edging Arendt out for the top spot in current history best-sellers: the 1988 oral history The Journey Back From Hell: Conversations with Concentration Camp Survivors by Anton Gill.

Based purely on these Amazon snapshots of current demand, it seems America is in a rather pessimistic mood these days. Of course, nothing eases a sense of pervasive existential despair like curling up with a good book. Anyone need to borrow a copy of The Hunger Games?

A Brick-And-Mortar Amazon Bookstore Is Coming To NYC

Amazon shoppers, prepare yourselves: a giant Amazon bookstore is hitting Manhattan IRL this spring.

A whopping 4,000 square feet of Time Warner Center will be taken over by the company as it opens its first physical retailer on the right coast (Amazon currently has bookstores in Oregon, Washington, and California). The NYC store is just the first of a few Amazon plans to open on this side of the country, with ones in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Illinois to come.

The decision to revert from the digital world to the real world stems from the fact that 91 percent of retail shopping that still happens in physical stores, the LA Times reports.

“My expectation is Amazon will take all the best of online and apply it to the physical store,” Brendan Witcher, an analyst at research group Forrester, said to the Times.

He added that a physical store would facilitate window displays to catch the attention of occasional shoppers and allow new users to “experience the Amazon brand.”

Not everyone is convinced by the sentiment behind Witcher’s pitch. “Amazon’s new brick and mortar bookstore is wildly banal,” Dustin Kurtz wrote for The New Republic. “The store … betrays inexperience with retail.”

“Can’t Amazon let the book-selling old guard have anything?” HuffPost’s Claire Fallon asked.

The Amazon Books news came not long after the announcement of Amazon Go just last month. Amazon Go, a Seattle-based grocery store, uses deep learning technology to allow customers to grab whatever they want and leave.

Run-DMC Files $50 Million Lawsuit Against Amazon and Wal-Mart for Trademark Infringement

Attorneys for the Run-D.M.C. brand have filed a $ 50 million lawsuit against Amazon Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Co., Jet.com and a few other outlets for trademark infringement and trademark dilution, among other things.
First reported by TMZ Thursday, the legal filing was made in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The complaint, which includes numerous images of Run-D.M.C.-inspired products as they appeared on Amazon’s and Wal-Mart’s respective sites, alleges that the retailers are advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple Run-D.M.C. styled products. Eyewear, hats, T-shirts, wallets and patches are among the items referenced, some of which are said to use the Run-D.M.C. trademark. The complaint charges that the products being sold “confuse the public and suggest that Run-D.M.C. endorses the products.”
Homegrown in Hollis, Queens by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, Run-D.M.C. helped define hip hop culture in the Eighties. Mizell, better known as “Jam Master Jay,” was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens in 2002.
