Takashi Murakami, Virgil Abloh and ‘America Too’ at Gagosian Beverly Hills

The line was half a block long, not an unusual occurrence at Gagosian Beverly Hills, but certainly one that hasn’t happened since its Oscar Week opening featuring Damien Hirst back in February. Wednesday night’s opening of “America Too,” the third collaboration between Takashi Murakami and Virgil Abloh, drew a small army of fans, most of them young and several of them famous.
Travis Scott, Kourtney Kardashian, Usher, Kid Cudi, Orlando Bloom and Luka Sabbat were spotted in the crowd, which was sizable inside, though nothing compared with the orderly throng outside. They were let in a handful at a time, making it possible for as many fans to take in the event as possible.
Many of the artworks themselves, in a variety of media, were also oversize, including the giant “Material Too,” a take on the American flag, that hung in the center of the North Gallery. It was probably also the biggest number of iPhones seen at an art opening, as young fans excitedly Instagrammed themselves in front of the colorful works, including Murakami’s iconic rainbow flower, onto which the signature arrows of Abloh’s Off-White label were overlaid, or “Arrows and Flower Neon Sign” and a rotating piece that blinked like

America Ninja Warrior Host Kristine Leahy’s Dog Prefers Blueberry Facials to Exercise

When American Ninja Warrior host Kristine Leahy isn’t watching the country’s fittest residents tackle monstrous obstacle courses, she is probably watching her best friend Jersey waddle around.

Leahy, 31, is a proud mom to her “baby,” a empathetic pug with a penchant for sweaters.

Jersey is the host’s very first pet, so everything runs on the canine’s schedule.

“She yells at me like crazy when she wants something,” Leahy told PeopleTV of the pug, adding that her pet, who also has a sweet side, loves sitting in her lap.

While some might expect Leahy to own a more athletic dog, she says her big dog in a little package prefers blueberry facials at Beverly Hills pet boutique Pussy & Pooch to working out.

Watch the newest episode of Paws & Claws on PeopleTV. Go to PeopleTV.com, or download the PeopleTV app on your favorite mobile or connected TV device.

Jersey often accompanies her famous owner to work, keeping Leahy company in her trailer, and jet-setting across the country when American Ninja Warrior calls for travel.

Overall, Leahy’s goal is to give her pug the best life, and she is nailing it.

Street Signs: Slam Jam Brings Innovative Distribution Model to North America

After almost three decades in business, Luca Benini, the founder of Slam Jam, which is based in Ferrara, Italy, decided it was time to enter the North American market.
“The key objective for Slam Jam is to go international with our distribution by 2020,” said Benini. “Approaching America is a crucial pillar of the strategy, with the very valuable support of market specialist Point.”
Benini partnered with Point Intl., which includes Jason Sherman, Jason Benta and Jordan Thomas, who have held stints within sales at brands including Diadora Heritage, Under Armour and Billionaire Boys Club. They built a relationship organically and got to know each other during Paris fashion week and Miami Art Basel.
Slam Jam is a retailer, distributor and operates production facilities. Long before the luxury and streetwear categories were bedfellows, Benini was connecting these worlds and rooting his brands in skate, art and music. Late last year, Slam Jam teamed with Carhartt WIP to open Spazio Maiocchi, an art space in Milan that hosts exhibitions and fashion events and Benini has helped revive and reposition heritage brands such as Kappa.
In 1989, Benini started distributing Stüssy in the European market and Carhartt WIP quickly followed. Slam Jam currently handles the Italian distribution for

Pregnant America Ferrera Celebrates Baby Shower with Ugly Betty and Superstore Costars

America Ferrera‘s baby shower may have been without cheesy party games, but it wasn’t lacking in love.

The 33-year-old actress was joined by family and friends over the weekend for a party celebrating the impending arrival of her first child with husband Ryan Piers Williams.

“No poopie diaper games here. Just dancing, drinking (water for me 🤗), and some of the people we love to celebrate the little human we can’t wait to meet,” she captioned a series of photos from the bash on Instagram.

Ferrera also gave a shout out to her pal Elsa Marie Collins for planning the party at Beauty & Essex Los Angeles, which the mom-to-be called “a gorgeous place to celebrating,” noting that she was “not being paid to say that.”

The guest list included her Ugly Betty costars Ana Ortiz and Mark Indelicato, who posed for a picture in which both actors happily placed their hands on Ferrera’s growing belly.

The actress also posed for a group shot with her “Superstore family,” including Ben Feldman, Kelly Stables, Nichole Bloom, Colton Dunn, Kaliko Kauahi, Nico Santos and Lauren Ash — who recently told PEOPLE Now that the baby “recognizes my booming, loud, obnoxious voice” and kicks for her.

Ferrera — who wore a colorful floral dress and pink sandals — also made sure to get some family snaps before the new addition joins, sharing silly pictures with her husband and a shot from the party’s photo booth with the baby’s grandparents.

Marcolin Appoints Rettore as CEO for North America

The Marcolin Group has appointed Davide Rettore chief executive officer for North America.
Rettore returns to Marcolin after a three-year hiatus spent at Kering. Most recently, he served as global brand director for Kering Eyewear.
The executive previously worked as brand manager for Roberto Cavalli and Just Cavalli eyewear, a licensee of Marcolin. He also spent two years as Marcolin’s group brand manager.

Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club Requests to Hire 70 Foreign Workers During Administration’s ‘Made in America’ Week

Trump‘s Mar-a-Lago Club has requested approval to hire a total of 70 foreign employees to staff the Palm Beach, Florida, estate starting in October – a move that, coincidentally, comes during the president’s Made In America Week, the Washington Post and Buzzfeed News have reported.

According to three requests posted to the Department of Labor’s Public Job Registry, Mar-A-Lago is seeking to hire 15 housekeepers, 35 waiters and 20 cooks through H-2B visas.

The H-2B visas would allow the foreign workers to staff the for-profit club – which Trump has visited 25 times since beginning his presidency – from this October until May 2018. Trump’s Jupiter, Florida, golf club made a similar request for six cooks.

H-2B visas are specifically for foreign workers that will fill temporary jobs in the U.S. in fields including tourism and construction, among other things, the Post reported. Just earlier this week, the administration said it was expanding the H-2B program to offer an additional 15,000 visas to foreign workers, reported The Hill.

A Department of Labor spokesman told the outlet that Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s Jupiter golf club are required to attempt to fill the positions with American workers first, before they can ask the Department of Homeland Security to issue visas for foreign workers who want the roles.

Coincidentally, the Trump administration has spent most of its Made in America Week highlighting U.S.-made products and companies.

The week – which is the first of several upcoming themed weeks – kicked off on Monday, and has included a roundtable discussion profiling 20 companies that manufacture their products in the U.S.

The White House also hosted a American Product Showcase, which included U.S. companies from all 50 states.

This issue was full of new revelations, including the long-awaited explanation for why Thor Odinson has thrown his lot in with Captain America and Hydra rather than the Avengers. Unlike Scarlet Witch and Vision, Thor isn’t being brainwashed. Instead, he’s simply motivated by loyalty to Steve Rogers, a man who very recently proved himself worthy of wielding Mjolnir where Thor himself is not. Reebok Veteran Chris Froio Returns to U.S. to Serve as General Manager at Reebok America

BACK TO BOSTON: Having done some significant layoffs in recent months in advance of its planned move to new corporate headquarters in October, Reebok International has tapped Chris Froio as general manager of Reebok America.
With 25 years of experience with the company both in the U.S. and abroad, Froio is now overseeing the brand’s efforts to build sales in the increasingly competitive U.S. market. Most recently he served as Reebok’s brand director in Western Europe, which became the brand’s fastest-growing market and nearly doubled sales, according to Reebok president Matt O’Toole. He was based in Herzogenaurach, Germany, but his successor has not yet been named, a Reebok spokesman said Tuesday.
Froio, whose former roles at the company included head of Reebok’s Training business unit, is now heading up Reebok’s U.S. retail and wholesale organizations. He reports to O’Toole.
As an indication of its commitment to the domestic business, the company combined its global and U.S. teams into one in order to maximize the full resources of the brand to work on bolstering the U.S. business. In addition to well-established competitors like Nike, Under Armour, Puma, New Balance and Asics, Reebok has a slew of other labels trying to chip away at its

Chris Pratt Says His Blue-Collar America Remark Was ‘Pretty Stupid’

Anna Faris has been live-tweeting her life away this week, so maybe she noticed that her husband’s comments about diversity in Hollywood didn’t exactly go over well on social media.

Earlier in the week, Chris Pratt told Men’s Fitness that Hollywood has a representation problem when it comes to blue-collar Americans, despite an Oscar season that highlighted the experience of working-class people (see: “Moonlight, “Manchester By The Sea” or “Fences”).

“I don’t see personal stories that necessarily resonate with me, because they’re not my stories,” he said. “I think there’s room for me to tell mine, and probably an audience that would be hungry for them. The voice of the average, blue-collar American isn’t necessarily represented in Hollywood.”

His comments immediately elicited a passionate response from tweeters who were quick to remind Pratt that not only are there a tons of movies about working-class white men, there are other and more pressing representational issues to focus on in Hollywood.

Pratt apparently realized the error of his ways and took to social media on Friday to walk back his statements after the backlash.

“That was actually a pretty stupid thing to say. I’ll own that,” he wrote on Friday. “There’s a ton of movies about blue-collar America.”

Celebrities, take note. Now this is how to take responsibility and apologize publicly.

America Ferrera: Representation ‘Is How Most Of Us Learn What Is Possible’

America Ferrera delivered a rousing speech on the importance of representation beyond the media at the Human Rights Campaign’s Los Angeles Gala Dinner on Saturday.

The 32-year-old actress was presented with HRC’s Ally for Equality Award during the ceremony, and in her acceptance speech broke down why it’s important that people of color and in marginalized communities see themselves reflected in culture.

“We know that representation matters. We know this. Not just in the media but in our schools, in our hospitals, in our boardrooms, in our halls of power ― we know that it makes all the difference to see ourselves reflected by culture, with dignity, with humor, with compassion,” Ferrera said in a video of her speech posted Monday.

“It is how most of us learn what is possible for us,” she continued. “What our place in the world is. And too often we have to spend so many years unlearning what culture has taught us about who we are or ought to be; but it doesn’t have to be that way. We can change that. Every single one of us. We can leave the next generation with a better reflection of their innate worth and their inherent power simply by claiming and living in our own power.”

The Human Rights Campaign, the largest advocacy group in the country for LGBTQ rights, honored both Ferrera and Katy Perry during the gala for being allies and using their platform to elevate the voices of those in the LGTBQ community. The singer received a National Equality Award while Ferrera joined actress Meryl Streep and host Seth Meyers in receiving the Ally for Equality Award in 2017.

During her speech, Ferrera also explained how she’s lacked role models in her own path to achieve her dreams.

“I didn’t grow up seeing a lot of examples of short, brown, chubby, poor daughters of immigrant parents grow up to be successful actresses and loud activists,” she said. “I had to use my imagination most of the time.”

The star then thanked the mentors and friends who encouraged her to use her voice, including her high school drama teacher who was in the audience. And she admitted that some days it is “really hard” to be vocal about issues she cares about but feels her own empowerment is connected to the empowerment of other marginalized groups, like the LGBTQ community.

Watch Ferrera’s full speech above. You can hear her comments on representation at the 10:00 mark.

Heroic Artist Gets ‘Make America Great Again’ Tattooed Around His Anus (NSFW)

Queer performance artist Abel Azcona has taken his critique of Donald Trump to the next level: by tattooing the words of the president’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again,” in a circle around his anus.

The tattooing of the phrase occurred in the Defibrillator Gallery in Chicago amongst a crowd of eager onlookers earlier this week. Azcona, who has engaged in more than 500 performance projects and over 100 individual exhibitions around the world, told The Huffington Post that he considers the bold statement to be a queer, political act.

“I always worked my body as a weapon and a political tool,” Azcona said. “For more than 12 years I have been performing political and social performances and exhibitions that have led me to jail, detention or death threats. I believe in the empowerment of the body and of the pain. The anus is a pleasure zone for many people, and an area of sin for others. I think demystifying what the anus is, and writing a fascist political motto like that in my anus, is a clearly critical and subversive action.”

Azcona went on to say that anyone who faces marginalization or discrimination at the hands of the Trump administration has a responsibility to speak out in whatever way that they see fit.

“I believe that all of us who consider ourselves different should never be silent,” Azcona continued. “We must attack. We must use our body as a weapon of empowerment. We are faggots, women, Mexicans, blacks and different. And we are brave. Art is the greatest critical, social and political weapon I know, and if we know how to use it, among all we will end up with Trump’s hatred of this new era.”

What a painfully powerful statement! Head here to learn more about Azcona.

‘Get Out’ Star Daniel Kaluuya: I’m ‘Too Black’ For Britain, ‘Not Black Enough’ For America

Actor Daniel Kaluuya doesn’t think he should have to prove his blackness.

In a new interview with GQ magazine, the “Get Out” star shared his thoughts on Samuel L. Jackson’s recent critique that black British actors may not be able to relate to black Americans. For Kaluuya, Jackson’s comments reflect his personal experiences of being ostracized in different settings for being dark-skinned.

“When I’m around black people I’m made to feel ‘other’ because I’m dark-skinned,” he said. “I’ve had to wrestle with that, with people going ‘You’re too black.’ Then I come to America and they say, ‘You’re not black enough.’ I go to Uganda, I can’t speak the language. In India, I’m black. In the black community, I’m dark-skinned. In America, I’m British.”

The actor went on to add that similar to black Americans’ vast range of social issues, the London’s black community has confronted oppression, prejudice, and police brutality.

Since Jackson’s much-discussed statements ― which drew criticism from British actor John Boyega ― made headlines last week, Jackson later told the Associated Press that his comments were not necessarily  a “slam” towards the performers, but rather an assessment about how “Hollywood works in an interesting sort of way sometimes.”

Despite Jackson’s commentary, Kaluuya says it’s not his intent to be a “culture vulture “ of the black American experience, but rather focus on telling black stories.

“This is the frustrating thing, in order to prove that I can play this role, I have to open up about the trauma that I’ve experienced as a black person,” he said. “I have to show off my struggle so that people accept that I’m black. No matter that every single room I go to I’m usually the darkest person there…I kind of resent that mentality. I’m just an individual.”

Sean Spicer Sends Distress Signal To America With Upside-Down Flag Pin

During Friday’s White House press conference, Sean Spicer sent Twitter into a frenzy when he wore his American flag pin upside down. Though Spicer’s unfortunate move was likely accidental, an upside-down American flag is an officially recognized sign of distress.

Almost immediately, everyone on Twitter began making the same joke about what kind of signal Spicer was trying to send.

The upside-down flag was recently used in a promotion for the next season of “House of Cards,” so of course the Netflix show tweeted about Spicer’s mishap:

Spicer’s error was flagged down during the press conference and he quickly fixed it. According to Yahoo White House correspondent Hunter Walker, Omarosa Manigault reportedly passed Spicer a note about the error.

We know Melissa McCarthy and the “Saturday Night Live” writers are just loving this new material.

Fred Armisen And Carrie Brownstein Make A Case For The ‘Portlandia’ Bubble In Trump’s America

In 2011, just midway into President Barack Obama’s first term in office, IFC’s “Portlandia” debuted with an ode to the liberal bubble of Portland, Oregon.

“The dream of the ‘90s is alive in Portland,” sang the show’s stars, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, along with other young, flannel-wearing people.

The song celebrated Portland’s insular and nostalgia-prone weirdness. But ever since President Donald Trump’s unexpected election last November, people around the country have been re-examining liberal bubbles and the potential downsides that can come with living in them.

On Thursday night, one of the final episodes of Season 7, the show’s penultimate season, will debut on IFC.  Although Fred and Carrie created this storyline for the episode, entitled “Portland Secedes,” before the election of Trump, it’s hard to separate the episode (or the entire season for that matter) from the pervading existence of Trump’s America.

As such, The Huffington Post spoke to Fred and Carrie about how the rise of Trump affected their writers’ room, how his presidency puts a new viewing lens on “Portlandia,” and whether Americans should keep their cultural bubbles.

The Q&A below has been edited and condensed for clarity.

How the rise of Trump impacted the writers’ room

The creators have said that for past seasons, Portland residents’ high level of “optimism” led to many sketch ideas. Despite not knowing the results of the election around the time you were developing Season 7, Trump’s rise was already still apparent. Did his campaign alter your approach to the characters?

Fred: Well, I mean, in the writers’ room, it came up a lot. But I think we try to avoid anything that’s too directly topical so that it has some shelf life. I think it has less to do with politics specific to an election as opposed to the politics that are happening in general. Like, whatever the general feeling is that year around that time. Because we don’t have the luxury of having, like, a live show, it’s a little less specific.

The value of protecting values

The “Portland Secedes” episode imagines Portland attempting to leave the United States to maintain its unique weirdness. A spoiler that’s necessary for context: They don’t succeed.

In light of the election results, it’s hard to not see the sketch as something of a parody of Trump’s America. Even so, it’s unclear whether the focus is Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, or whether you are going for a joke similar to a recent “Saturday Night Live” sketch, which imagined putting a dome on Brooklyn to preserve its bubble. Either way, was there actually an attempt at a political lens here?

Carrie: I do think the political climate permeated the writers’ room ― that echo chamber and that sense that things were quite partisan and everyone had kind of sorted themselves into categories ― culturally or by neighborhood or by city. And I think we’ve always been a show that is about one’s relationship to place.

So, it made sense that these characters in our world would be interested in kind of protecting things that they had built and value. I think on the entire political spectrum, everybody feels they’re sort of trying to protect their values. And I guess that’s just what these people are doing in a kind of comical and absurd way.

The opening scene of “Portland Secedes”

The case for keeping bubbles

In a 2015 interview with Good before the rise of Trump, Carrie said, “I think that you do have to create a bubble. And I think that anything that’s really been powerful starts with people ignoring the consensus and just focusing.”

A post-election hypothesis has been that Trump’s win came as a result of liberals living in a bubble that keeps “real America” hidden from them. But is there still any value to living in a bubble?

Fred: Well, as far as value goes, obviously it’s nicer to be in an environment where you feel comfortable. But it’s also clear that it’s probably not the most realistic thing. Also, on the other hand, I don’t know how we can avoid it. I mean, I suppose you can try to educate yourself, but just geographically, I think people are just drawn to a sort of kind of place and it just ends up being that way.

I think it’s unavoidable, but we have been able to sort of curate our surroundings. Even online so that you’re kind of giving yourself a lot of confidence in the way that you are.

Putting out Season 7 after Trump’s victory

After the election, audiences have put a political lens on work that was created before Trump’s win. Notably, the new A Tribe Called Quest album and “The Young Pope” both have been considered resonant and responsive works to Trump’s America, even though that couldn’t have been their original intent. How does it feel to have such a lens focused on Season 7?

Carrie: Yeah, I think that’s an inevitability. You know there’s almost a level of toxicity that we’re immersed in, and I think people are realizing it was almost a privilege in some ways during the Obama administration to be able to tune out politics every once in awhile. Or to be able to kind of exist in a space that didn’t feel violent or aggressive or confusing. But I think it’s important to remember there’s always been vulnerable and marginalized populations who have felt attacked and disenfranchised under any administration, just based on institutional disparities.

But I do think that it’s just the new lens that we examine all music and television and literature. I think everyone is searching for meaning and explanation and a way of making sense of some of the …. just the confusion. So, you can’t necessarily start out with the intention of making things clear for people. But I think the best kind of ― and most lasting ― artistic statements feel relevant when they’re happening, but also feel relevant in retrospect.

In some ways that’s been our goal always. It’s just that, the fact that people can watch the show now and still feel it was in this world ― not incongruous with this current administration ― is what we always set out to do. To feel part of something and part of something that will last.

How the election will continue to affect the show’s characters

Recently, Carrie performed at the Women’s March and told Vanity Fair that she feels there is a “a feeling of collective despair, uncertainty, and anxiety right now.” Even if the show doesn’t take aim at specific political moments, if there is a collective despair, would that inevitably bleed into the characters’ lives for Season 8, the final season?

Fred: It’s hard to tell, but [I have] a memory of the writers’ room and just feeling like, we had optimism then because we didn’t know what the result of the election was going to be. So there was a lot of discussion [about Trump], but I actually can’t remember what ― now that things are like this ― I can’t remember what the split was in the room.

We came up with the mens’ rights movement sketches as characters, but I still don’t know. I think that just came from a time where we thought maybe men were feeling unrepresented. It was a joke, really, but maybe it was more real than we imagined.

Carrie: Yeah, it was almost like we were still existing in a bubble of certainty, but at the same time, I think we felt a vulnerability. An encroaching vulnerability upon that certainty. And I remember that there was an anxiety that was creeping in ― realizing that what we assumed was in our future, might actually not happen.

And I think the most telling thing is when we tried to sort of move past the discussion ― which was at the time, the primaries and then the actual general election ― that we couldn’t. That we found, even in the preamble, that there were sort of fault-lines. We had to navigate that and I think we can see that in the writing. That we would land upon that place that felt a little unstable and try to kind of write from that.

I think a lot of our characters this season are sort of exploring change or disinheritance or a sense of, I don’t know, trouble ahead, I guess.

One of the sketches about men’s rights activists from Season 7

Fred and Carrie’s closing thoughts on contextualizing Season 7

Fred: The only thing I can think of is just the role of Portland. Now to me, it just represents a different kind of city. I personally just have this feeling of wanting to embrace it even more because I take it for granted less. That a whole city can have an identity like that. I think I just cherish it a little more now.

Carrie: I think I feel lucky that we have another season of “Portlandia” because, as much as it feels very necessary to write from a satirical perspective, I also feel the need to be able to see things through a lens of absurdity, because I think so much right now feels so out of whack as to be absurd. Verging on surreal.

And also people need to laugh. People always come back to me from each season and I think I’ve heard more [right now about] this relief at laughing. Just the actual physical, emotional release that comes from laughter. And I think that’s something that we’re really able to do on the show and I feel lucky to be able to do it for another year.

“Portlandia” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on IFC.

Is America Still A Nation of Immigrants?

The letter below was originally written after 9/11 as an open letter to a relative of mine who had worries about migrating to America. But it feels that it is especially relevant to our time. So here it is, revised.

Dear Cousin,

What is it like to be an immigrant in America these days? Is it still worth coming, you ask, and is the American dream still possible?

Your questions gave me pause. Who from Vietnam, after all, would have thought to ask them a few years back? Didn’t the American dream, or rather the dream of coming to America, cause the movement of millions in our homeland, and stir the soul of many millions more? It breaks my heart then to hear that you might not come. It is to me the worst news yet about my adopted country.

Yet it’s undeniable. The nation of immigrants is turning its back on immigrants once more. The immigrant’s hold on American soil has become increasingly tenuous. Even citizens now face a barrage of hate speech and many are being attacked in a rising wave of hate crimes. In schools, white students scream “build the wall” at their classmates who are Mexicans or Muslims.

“Build the wall” has become a racist mantra chanted by many around the country against non-whites.

2017-02-08-1486590726-9013476-gop2016trumpjpeg950be.jpg

Cousin, have you heard the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine? When it stops singing, it means the oxygen has run out, providing a warning to all.

In America, and in the context of a free and open society, often the immigrant is that canary. In economic down times he is often the first to be blamed. And amid the ongoing US war against terrorism, he is fast becoming a scapegoat.

After the 2016 election that ushered in Donald Trump as President of the United States, many hate-crime related incidents occurred in which the President’s name was invoked by the perpetrators, as if to sanction the violence and verbal abuse.

In the name of protection and security, immigrants’ rights are being eroded as I write. Foreign students and workers tremble. I’ve seen an old South Asian man whose hands shook at the airport when he gave his green card to immigration officers, fearing sudden arrest and deportation. I know an undocumented college student at Berkeley — he was brought to the US when he was three years old — who now fakes his address on any application for fear of being deported.

2017-02-08-1486590339-421738-H05_Racist_Trump_USA.jpg

‘I have my hopes’

Yet I have my hopes. Americans rallied at airports in protest when Trump signed an executive order to keep certain groups of people out of the country, including green card holders. The protest against the new tyranny is strong and ongoing. I have hope to that the damage Trump is creating both at home and abroad can be mitigated by his growing unpopularity. After all, he is dismantling international institutions that have been in place since World War II, potentially returning the world to a state of competing nations with hard borders, high tariffs, trade wars, and gun boat diplomacy, turning against the forces of globalization.

And worse, in turning against America’s liberal values and our identity as a nation of immigrant, we are losing our strength in diversity.

Over the years I find it beneficial to look at this country through two different lenses: America versus the United States. The United States is a sovereign nation with permanent interests that is currently waging a war on terrorism. And it will trample upon innocents in its path, be it at home or abroad, if need be, in order to win it. In the process, the newcomer to this country, one without a voice and resources, often becomes collateral damage.

America, on the other hand, has everything you and I ever dreamed of: transparency, freedom, democracy, opportunity, due process, fair play and the promise of progress. America is where you work hard and earn respect.

The two versions exist in a kind of complex dance. In good times, America leads. In bad times, America is forgotten and the United States dances alone. These days, I fear that to be a patriotic immigrant is to love the ideals of America despite what the United States is doing in the name of security.

While I understand the logic of permanent interests, if America is destroyed in the process, then what is the use? And as far as I am concerned the only good patriotism is a civilized one. Blind patriotism always leads to bloody ends. To be patriotic is to dare ask questions. Must rights be abused in the name of security? Is it truly the country’s interest to demonize its minorities and its newcomers?

Dear cousin, I hope I haven’t completely frightened you, but the situation requires honesty. To reach American shores these days is a much more difficult undertaking, with fewer ready-made promises on the horizon.

I still want you to make this difficult journey, but you must be prepared for the challenges ahead. And I’ll let you in on a secret about this American dream you spoke so fondly of: it is you who must renew it. Without you, who dream the American dream, the country is in danger of becoming old. Without your energy, we would weaken. Even if we don’t know it yet, we all desperately need to be reborn through your eyes.

So, is the American Dream still alive? No, cousin, not really. Not without you at the table. Not without you prospering. Not without you.

Keane Singer Tom Chaplin Makes Triumphant Solo Debut in America

Releasing an album no longer guarantees success in an industry where platinum-selling singers face the same pressures as fledgling artists. Yet, Keane frontman Tom Chaplin proved that talent and heart still matter as much as the numbers do when he kicked off a 15-date North American tour in Atlanta this weekend to celebrate his solo debut, The Wave. In a triumphant return to the U.S. after more than four years away, Chaplin raised the roof with a dozen new songs that showcased his stellar vocal abilities – and also shared stories about his recovery from drug addiction.

Chaplin’s 90-minute set at the Buckhead Theatre included favorites “Everybody’s Changing” and “Bend and Break” from Keane’s 2004 debut, Hopes and Fears, as well as the current single, “Still Waiting.” The Wave’s “Hardened Heart” and “Bring the Rain” (co-written by Chaplin and Max McElligott ) recalled the joyous rave-ups for which Keane is best known, while “The River” (penned with Aqualung) suggested a clearer pop direction. Chaplin’s backing band did not pretend to be a replacement for Keane, but instead found its own earthier path as drummer Sebastian Sternberg and multi-instrumentalists Tobie Tripp, Beau Holland, and Rose Langley brought verve to the arrangements with strings and harmonies.

The intimate audience of 400 fans never relented in its cheering, except to make room for two quiet confession: “Solid Gold,” in which Chaplin dedicated to his ‘long suffering’ wife for sticking with him during years of substance abuse relapse, and “Worthless Words,” with a delicate falsetto bridge and apologetic refrain. Deep into the set, when he sang “Quicksand” in honor of his toddler daughter, Chaplin bounced with nervous excitement as he promised to pick her up when dreams ‘fall through, screw you, and batter you to black and blue.’ In that moment, it was impossible not to root for a permanently happy ending to the singer’s much-publicized struggles.

In our pre-show interview at a nearby café, Chaplin says making The Wave was less about running away from his former bandmates (including formidable tunesmith Tim Rice-Oxley) and more about having the space to dig into something heavier: the reasons why he kept putting his body on the line for the false elation of a chemical high.

“Being a drug addict is horrible and exhausting,” he says. “It can lead you to death, but it forced me into a corner. All my energy towards this album started at my lowest point. I wanted to get it all down [on record] and [by the middle of 2015], I was on a roll.”

Chaplin says The Wave‘s themes drew upon his psychoanalysis sessions and conversations with his wife over the past few years. The raw demo vocal on “Bound Together” feels like a 21st century take on The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood;” the satisfying mantra of “Cheating Death” promises ‘just keep believing/you’ve got the strength to go on;’ and “Hardened Heart” moves from desperation into self-forgiveness as Chaplin sings of being ‘stuck on a road of sadness with nowhere to go’ but keeps insisting, ‘it’s a beautiful life.’

“Those words come from a very dark place, knowing you’ve hurt everyone that’s close to you,” he says. “A lot of people have commented online about the song and said that it could have been written about their depression. For me, the depression was self-induced.”

Chaplin is not alone in his use of music as a mechanism for recovery; artists in many genres have made albums about their journeys to sobriety – from Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt to Keith Urban and Eminem, some of whom went on to have the biggest hits of their careers after getting clean. Like others who have pursued projects outside of the bands that made them famous, Chaplin says the “door is open” for future possibilities with or without Keane. During our interview, he mentions how much fun he’s had playing around with covers of Sia and Bruno Mars songs and writing unexpectedly sturdy ballads with songwriters who’ve made hits for pop stars like Cher and Enrique Iglesias. Although The Wave is rooted in the same pop-rock style that helped “Somewhere Only We Know” break through on mainstream radio when Keane embarked on its first U.S. tour more than a decade ago, Chaplin is firmly on a path to a solo career, if he chooses to stay the course.

“It was easy for me to slip into the life of the charming, jocular guy in Keane, but I wasn’t facing my truth,” he says. “The only way I could get well was to talk, and to be open and vulnerable for the for first time in my life. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. I could actually breathe again.”

Reza Aslan On Why America Needs A Muslim ‘Modern Family’

As an American Muslim living in a climate of Islamophobia, Reza Aslan has had to develop a thick skin when speaking about his faith in public. In an appearance on Vox’s series “The Secret Life of Muslims,” Aslan shared a few conclusions about what he thinks can challenge negative perceptions of Islam.

As a scholar of religion and a New York Times bestselling author, Aslan is frequently called upon by the media to comment on issues surrounding Muslim life in America. Often, Aslan finds himself in the position of having to defend Islam, a faith practiced by roughly 1.6 billion people in the world, against the actions of a few political extremists. He’s also had his credentials as a New Testament scholar questioned on Fox News ― just because he’s a practicing Muslim.

“The hardest part for me when I’m being interviewed is to tamp down my astonishment,” Aslan said in the recently published video. “The thing that’s mostly going through my mind is, ‘Calm down, calm down.’”

What Aslan has learned from his experiences is that bigotry doesn’t stem from ignorance ― it stems from fear. Aslan believes that even truthful information doesn’t stand a chance against fear.

“The only way you’re going to dissipate that fear is by getting people to know someone that they’re afraid of,” Aslan said.

That’s why he believes it’s important for Americans to see examples of the average Muslim family in American pop culture, film, and television. In the same way television shows like “Will and Grace” and “Modern Family” helped audiences become familiar with same-sex families and relationships, Aslan thinks a series that showcases American Muslim life will help break through the negative perceptions and fear that some Americans have about Muslims.

As part of that mission, Aslan has teamed up with former Friends” executive producer Andrew Reich to create a comedy show about an Iranian-American family from San Jose, California. The untitled show was purchased by ABC last year, according to Deadline.

“Stories have the power to break through the walls that separate us into different ethnicities, different cultures, different nationalities, different races, different religions, because they hit us at the human level,” Aslan said.

Watch the clip above to see more of Reza Aslan’s appearance on Vox.

In Trump’s America, Comedy Clubs Are Becoming Less And Less Funny

One night last month, improv player Peter Kim took the stage at the legendary Second City theatre in Chicago with the other members of his acclaimed comedy troupe for what was supposed to be just another fun night of laughs.

It would turn out to be anything but. During the show, the cast, which often involves audience members in their skits, asked a woman in the crowd to name something that annoyed her, “like getting stuck in traffic.”

But the answer that rang loudest didn’t come from the woman. It came from another man in the audience, who was seated next to a Hispanic couple. “Sitting too close to a Mexican!” he shouted, before requesting a high-five from a friend.

I think that this moment of Donald Trump has resulted in a few people feeling more license to shout out crude remarks and behave crudely.
Second City CEO Andrew Alexander

The incident shook Kim, so much so that he decided he’d had enough. Over the preceding year, hecklers had become an increasing problem for him and his fellow comedians, spewing racist, misogynistic and homophobic language during shows.

In an essay for Vox, Kim recalled “a man dragging his wife out of the theater while yelling ‘fucking liberals can go to hell!’” Another time a man called him a faggot while Kim was exiting the stage. Then there was the incident when an audience member yelled, “Don’t clap for him,” while Kim was dressed in full drag. That doesn’t even include all the times people from the audience heckled him for being Asian.

And so, Kim decided to call it quits. Three other members of the show left around the same time, too. Two members of management also quit, and another member of management took a leave of absence.

A Second City spokeswoman declined to comment about the departures when reached by The Huffington Post, but Andrew Alexander, the club’s CEO and producer, told Chicagoist that while multiple factors helped explain the departures, antagonistic, conservative-leaning crowds were a large factor.

“Over the last six months, we’ve seen a much higher level of audience verbal shout-outs; and sometimes those have become racist,” Alexander said. “In 44 years of this work, I’ve never seen anything like it. The audience seems to feel like they have license in very unpleasant ways.”

He added, “I think that this moment of Donald Trump has resulted in a few people feeling more license to shout out crude remarks and behave crudely.”

The situation at Second City may seem extreme, but it appears to be far from unique. Comedy clubs in the lead-up to the election (and now in its wake) have presented a unique breeding ground for conflict. After all, there are very few, if any other, public spheres in modern American life in which conservative Americans pay money to sit in a room as left-leaning comics discuss the state of the world. Add in alcohol, and the possibility for conflict only heightens.

Amy Schumer talks with a Donald Trump supporter

In the last two months, two separate incidents involving prominent liberal comedians and their conservative audiences have made national news. On Oct. 16 in Tampa, Florida, approximately two hundred audience members violently booed and then walked out of an Amy Schumer show after she criticized Trump, asking,  “Do you get worried at all with how impulsive he is, that he gets so fired up from ‘Saturday Night Live’ doing a skit on him?”

Just under a month later and only days after Trump’s election, Wanda Sykes took the stage at Boston’s TD Garden for a fundraiser on behalf of The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care. But the situation quickly turned ugly once she joked that Trump was not the country’s first “racist, sexist, homophobic president,” leading to unmistakeable and loud boos from the audience.

“Fuck you, motherfuckers, fuck all of y’all.” “Fuck you, you, you … How can you say he’s not racist? ‘Grab them by the pussy’? How can you say he’s not sexist? You can you say he’s not racist? How can you say he’s not homophobic?” (Sykes later noted in a Facebook post that the audience “cheered and applauded” at the end of her set when Sykes’ wife ran on stage and gave her a kiss.)

Wanda Sykes faces off against an antagonistic crowd in Boston

News of those two incidents has been widely circulated. But they appear to be far from the only examples of comedy clubs becoming increasingly tense in recent months. Former “SNL” star Darrell Hammond told HuffPost that a number of pro-Trump audience members “were just screaming” at a recent show.

At a post-election show in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Nov. 11, a set by another former “SNL” cast member, Tim Meadows, came to a deflating end after a heckling Trump supporter got into it with a security guard.

The scene at comedy clubs mirrors what has transpired more generally since Trump’s election. Between Nov. 9 and Nov. 18, the Southern Poverty Law Center received word of more than 700 incidents of hateful incidents of harassment. In New York, NYPD commissioner James O’Neill said there has been a 31 percent increase in hate crimes in the city in 2016 compared to this time in 2015.

It’s definitely an aggressive time to be a comedian.
Comedian Todd Masterson

“Since the election, we’ve seen a big uptick in incidents of vandalism, threats, intimidation spurred by the rhetoric surrounding Mr. Trump’s election,” said Southern Poverty Law Center president Richard Cohen. “The white supremacists out there are celebrating his victory and many are feeling their oats.”

Todd Masterson, a Los Angeles–based comedian, said that while he personally hasn’t witnessed an uptick in heckling Trump supporters since the election, he has noticed a change onstage and behind the bar. “Straight, bro-y dudes,” he said, suddenly feel emboldened to return to political incorrectness. “One guy was like, ‘Oh, I can tell rape jokes again,’” said Masterson. At a comedy night he performs at in Los Angeles, a pro-Trump bartender also told the producers of the show that they “can’t do any anti-Trump material,” he said.

Added Masterson, “It’s definitely an aggressive time to be a comedian.”

But the aggression isn’t limited solely to Trump supporters, according to Marcella Arguello, a Latina comedian in Los Angeles. “I thought that conservative people would be a problem,” she said. “What I’m getting is very sensitive liberal audiences.”

At a recent show, Arguello said, she was doing a bit about the safety pins that Americans began to wear after the election in solidarity with marginalized peoples. Part of the bit involves imagining her immigrant mother, who is not aware of the fad, being harassed by a man wearing a safety pin at Target. But she wasn’t able to finish her joke before another woman in the crowd who appeared to also be Latina spoke up.

“She was like, ‘You shouldn’t be letting these people laugh at immigrants not having access to the internet,” Arguello said. “I was like, ‘Are you kidding me right now?’” Arguello, who admitted she doesn’t deal well with hecklers, then jokingly asked if the heckler wanted to fight.

The anger shows no signs of dying anytime soon. But the show will go on. And so, Peter Kim, the comedian who left Second City last month, told the Chicago Reader this week that he was returning to Second City for a new show based entirely on working with the crowd.

“I wanted to be in the same place where the same people might come so I could have a chance to talk back and shut down hecklers if they have hate speech,” he said. “I think the key story is that these hateful people were out there anyway. It’s not specific to Second City — clearly, after the election you see them coming out in droves.”

Denim North America Creates New Product Presentation Package

Denim North America, a division of DNA Textile Group, is introducing a new style of product presentation called the Dyed & Woven Collaborative Workshop.
“Since the mid-Nineties, there has been no significant change in the way that denim mills present fabric,” said Lisa Harris, DNA’s creative director. “We transitioned from fabric cards, to washed-leg panels and finally to full garment presentations, as it has remained for the past 10 years. We are taking a new approach by sharing our development tools directly with our customers and bringing the mill process to them. This allows for a truly transparent and collaborative development effort.”
DNA is showing the flexibility and diversity of a single base component across multiple fabrics, silhouettes and a variety of washes in the collection.
The Dyed & Woven Collaborative tool kit contains a sample from each step of the design process — from yarn slub and shade to construction, and wash — offering the ability to visualize many different combinations that the components are capable of producing. The kit has pouches of fabric swatches and yarns in a rolled up carrier ready for traveling, with pockets for DNA’s look book and other materials.

Work and Family in America: A Reference Handbook

Once viewed as a “women and day care” problem, work-family now encompasses a vast and complex set of issues. Eldercare. Fatherhood. Telecommuting. Pay equity. Employee productivity and retention. Feminism. Child care and childcare development. Youth violence. Welfare. Nontraditional families and family values. This extensive overview of this burgeoning field includes everything from a detailed history and statistics comparing trends in the United States and abroad to key legislation and legal cases. It gives biographical sketches of well-known activists like Betty Friedan, Arle Hothschild, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. Lesser-known advocates like James A. Levine, director of the Fatherhood Project at the Family and Work Institute and MIT professor Lotte Bailyn, who believes work should be organized around tasks, not time, are also included.

AMERICA ONE- NextGen II (Book VI)

AMERICA ONE- NextGen II (Book VI)

Ryan Richmond has dreamed about going to space since the age of seven. Reading space updates-and seeing pictures of Neil Armstrong on the lunar surface in National Geographic-was the ignition of this dream. At nineteen he sold his first company and employed the remnants of the Russian Space Program, three of the best space brains in the world. In his twenties he founded and sold two more companies and hired the most outstanding scientists and engineers from the European Space Authority. During his thirties, after selling his third company, he invested heavily in Internet start-ups, like Google, netting billions. Then he patiently waited until NASA’s shuttle program came to an end and contracted the best brains in the U.S. Space program, and went to Space. Decades later, Ryan and his crew at Astermine Co. are experienced space travelers, and it is time to begin a scheduled trading route between their new base on Mars, and Earth. Each planet has treasures the other planet desperately needs, but there are a few unhappy space people who don’t want Homo sapiens on their planet.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Plunging Gown at the Captain America: Civil War Premiere Makes Chris Evans Literally Stop and Stare

Elizabeth Olsen is known for having her sisters’ (Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen) minimalist, refined style, so it’s not often she goes full-on Hollywood glam. But Tuesday she pulled out all the style stops at the European premiere of Captain America: Civil War in a sexy, keyhole-neckline dress that turned more than a few heads — including her co-star’s, Chris Evans.

What makes the otherwise covered-up (long-sleeve, floor-length) gown so sexy is the accentuated plunging neckline, waist-cinching ruched bodice and body-skimming fabric. It also shows cleavage from all angles.

Olsen returns as the Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) in the latest installment of the hit superhero franchise and in a behind-the-scenes clip from the film, she comments on what it feels like playing a good guy (in Avengers: Age of Ultron she took a villainous turn).

“What I like about Wanda is the idea of her being terrified of her own abilities, it’s really fun to play with,” she explains.

Plus, she loved working with such a huge, creative cast. “There’s been a few moments where you kind of look around and go, ‘Oh, I’m in good company. This is rad.’”

Amerika? America!: From Immigration to Espionage

Amerika? America!: From Immigration to Espionage

This memoir was vetted by the CIA.”February 12, 2010: CIA Declassifies History of the Glomar Explorer”Interested in a first-hand account of Project Azorian? We have it! The story of how naval engineer Manfred Krutein assisted the CIA in raising a sunken Soviet submarine from the ocean floor, including orchestrating the “Hughes Glomar Explorer” ocean mining cover story for this secret project is told with breathtaking immediacy in his diary entries, which are interspersed with wife Eva’s third memoir of the Krutein family saga of emigration from Germany to Chile to the U.S.Eva Krutein – refugee, wife, mother, musician, community leader, writer – confronts every crisis in life with courage, honesty and good humor. Vol.1, “Eva’s War” takes place in Europe, as Eva and her infant daughter flee westward from Danzig in January, 1945. Vol.2, “Paradise Found, and Lost” tells how the growing family emigrates to Chile, lives and thrives there for nine years, and then decides to move again, to the USA. “Amerika? America!” is a story of rough beginnings, with gradual and sometimes comical adaptations to strangeness – it is California in the 1960s! – with five teenagers. Suddenly Eva’s narrative is interrupted by the voice of her husband, Manfred. His secret diary is quoted at length, revealing how his “ocean mining” assignment for Howard Hughes and the Glomar Explorer is really complex and extended cover for a secret spy project: raising a lost Soviet submarine from the floor of the Pacific. Eva and her family know nothing of this secret for years. The story tells of family tensions and growth to maturity, music and travel, especially to Hawaii, Iceland and back to Danzig [now Gdansk]. Told with compassion and honesty, the Krutien memoirs strengthen our feelings of worldwide human solidarity.”Another colorful, heart-warming tale of the Krutein family’s life adventures – this one addresses immigration to Amerika and the process of becoming American. It’s a wonderful book!” -Dr. G
