BFC to Salute Kaia Gerber, Hari Nef and Luka Sabbat, Among Others, at The Fashion Awards

YOUNG AND RESTLESS: The Fashion Awards in London aren’t only for industry veterans: This year, a category will debut called New Wave: Creatives, which will highlight 100 young, international talents. On Thursday at an event in New York, the British Fashion Council unveiled 20 of the 100 names.
The 20 names include U.S. talents Kaia Gerber, Hari Nef, Lil Miquela, Luka Sabbat, Brianna Capozzi and Ethan James Green.
Last month, the first crop of 20 names was revealed in Shanghai. Chinese trailblazers on that list include influencer Mr. Bags and Anny Fan, photographers Leslie Zhang and Ziqian Wang and models Jing Wen and Ting Chen.
Ahead of The Fashion Awards, which will take place on Dec. 10 at Royal Albert Hall in London, the remaining 60 names in the New Wave: Creatives category will be unveiled. The awards are held in partnership with Swarovski and will be hosted by Jack Whitehall and cohosted by Alek Wek.

The Costume Institute’s ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ Ranks Third Among Most-Visited Exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Costume Institute’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” has passed the one-million visitor mark.
In doing so, the show now is the Costume Institute’s most visited and the third most visited for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Catholic-themed fashion extravaganza knocked out “The Vatican Collections,“ which was held in 1983, in the third-place slot. It is now just behind “Mona Lisa,” a 1963 show and “Treasures of Tutankhamun” from 1978. King Tut still reigns supreme for the Fifth Avenue museum with more than 1.36 million visitors.
But Heavenly Bodies may gain ground since it will continue to be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters through Oct. 8. Made possible through the support of Christine and Stephen A. Schwarzman, and Versace, the show is meant to be a museum journey examining how the Catholic Church has inspired legions of designers. Catholicism — past, present and future — was considered to be a delicate (and exhaustive) subject to tackle. That may be more true now than when it opened in early May, given last week’s report of decades of alleged child sex abuse by more than 300 priests in Pennsylvania.
The Costume Institute wasn’t the only record breaker

Name, Age, Occupation & Hometown: Bachelor Stats Reveal Trends Among Contestants

Throughout the past 22 seasons of The Bachelor, audiences have watched hundreds of women of varying ages, names and occupations compete for the final rose.

As a way “to see if there was any location bias” with the selected contestant since season 1 of The Bachelor premiered in 2002, Homes.com decided to examine the stats surrounding the show.

“It quickly became clear that there were a ton of interesting stats on The Bachelor, specifically focusing on the ‘ideal contestant,’ including her ideal location. We thought this was fun, relevant, and might inspire folks living in that area to apply as a contestant knowing, at least from a statistical standpoint, that they have a higher chance of being selected by the producers,” says Homes.com’s Vice President of Search Marketin, gGrant Simmons, whose “data sources were bachelor wikis, databases, and a collection of Homes.com team members.”

“It was great to identify the ‘ideal contestant’ and that is — drum roll please — a 36-year-old nurse from Atlanta named Jennifer,” says Simmons.

From their research, Homes.com found that Lauren is the most popular Bachelor contestant first name, with Sarah, Ashley and Amber tying for the second spot. (Will that stat fair well for current season 22 contestant Lauren B.? Find out next week on Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s dramatic finale!)

“Lauren is the most popular contestant name (15 mentions), but it was the average Jennifer who won the most roses (average of 4.88 vs. Lauren’s 3),” says Simmons.

As for cities that breed the most contestants, Chicago, Illinois, was the top spot, with Los Angeles, California, coming in second and Dallas, Texas, as a close third.

“Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas topped the list of most contestants with Chicago (19) having three times as many, and Dallas (12) having twice as many as Atlanta (6), our top city for winners,” says Simmons.

He explains: “California has the most contestants (103), most likely because it’s the most populous state, but it’s the top corners of the country and the Midwest that appears to have more contestants that catch the Bachelor’s eye.”

“The most surprising outcome of the data is that California, for all its sun, beaches, lifestyle and really expensive homes (in the top cities of L.A. and San Diego), doesn’t rate very well when it comes to roses given,” he shares. “Although that may be a numbers game with their 103 contestants averaging one of the lowest rose counts in the country.”

Bachelor Nation fans may or may not be surprised to learn that the majority of contestants were aged 25, with 26 coming in second and 24 in third place.

“It’s apparently true that Bachelors love the older women with the two 36-year-old contestants earning an average of six roses during their appearances,” Simmons explains. “On the flip side, it seems like nobody likes you when you’re 25, at least on The Bachelor. While that is the most common contestant age overall, it is also essentially the worst performing age.”

According to Homes.com’s research, the most common profession for contestants was teacher, second was student and third was in real estate.

The Bachelor airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.

‘Kaur Project’ Captures The Beautiful Diversity Among Sikh Women

Many women who identify as Sikh share at least one thing in common: The name Kaur. It may be a middle or last name, and it isn’t always how they’re identified legally. But it’s a part of their heritage that dates back centuries and something many Sikh women share.

Saji Kaur Sahota and Jessie Kaur Lehail, a photographer-writer duo from British Columbia, Canada, are asking Sikh women what being a Kaur means to them. Their series, called the “Kaur Project,” aims to highlight this common heritage while celebrating the diversity of the women’s experiences.

“We have seen a lot of feminist theory incorporated into mainstream media, but there’s been nothing specifically for and about Sikh women,” Lehail, the writer behind the project, told The Huffington Post. “So we thought why not create something ourselves.”

Lehail and Sahota decided the only parameter for the project would be that the women must identify as Sikh and use the name Kaur. Thus far all the women featured in the project are in the B.C. area, though Lehail said they’re hoping to expand to other areas in the near future.

For every woman featured in the “Kaur Project,” Sahota does a photo shoot and Lehail conducts a 20-minute phone interview. The benefit of talking over the phone, the writer said, is that it allows the women to share things they might not otherwise share in person.

Lehail asks two simple questions: “How do you identify yourself as a Kaur” and “What has your journey been so far.” The women take their answers in many different directions, addressing topics like marriage, divorce, having children, losing children, struggling with depression or abuse, managing relationships with parents and in-laws and balancing all the many roles life places on them.

Some of the themes of the interviews are specific to Sikh or immigrant communities, Lehail said, “but a lot of what’s discussed is applicable to any community and almost all women.”

It also became clear to Lehail that being a Kaur can mean different things to different people. Like Kaur for women, Singh is given to many Sikh men as a middle or last name. The naming tradition began in the 17th century as a way to resist the caste system, in which a person’s name indicated their status in society. The names Kaur and Singh act as equalizers, reminding all Sikhs of the inherent equality of all human beings.

But framing the project around Sikh identity can be tricky, Lehail admitted, partly because Sikh identity isn’t homogenous. Some Sikhs are baptized, for instance, in what’s called an “Amrit ceremony.” After this, they take on new names and commit to upholding rules of dress, including keeping their hair uncut. Some Sikh men and women also wear turbans, an item once worn only by royalty in South Asia and which has become a symbol of equality in the faith.

But not all Sikhs practice these traditions. “We didn’t want to limit the project to just females who are Sikhs who wear turbans because Saji and I both have cut hair,” Lehail said. “We believe in the religion, but there are variations to how it’s practiced.”

Across the 60 women who Lehail and Sahota have featured so far, those variations are clear. “It’s a learning opportunity for the mainstream about Sikhism and Sikh women,” she said. “But also for Sikh women to learn about themselves.”

Check out some of the photos and stories from the “Kaur Project” below:

Harambe and ‘Damn Daniel’ Among The Memes That Won The Internet In 2016

2016 has widely been considered a tough year. But not all of 2016 was a downer. The Internet, as it often does, has provided plenty of hilarity in the form of viral memes to lighten things up.

We took a look at Google’s 2016 search trends and found the top 10 most sought-after memes of the year. From Harambe memes to the angry Michael Phelps face, these Internet creations will go down in online history as classics.

1. Harambe

When Harambe the gorilla was shot in order to protect a small child who had wandered into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, public outrage ensued. The Internet, however, had other plans for Harambe, and used the incident as the basis for a series of viral memes that were hard to miss on social media, making Harambe the top trending meme of the year.

It’s no surprise that a meme making light of an animal’s death caused quite a bit of controversy, especially with the Cincinnati Zoo. The zoo deleted its social media accounts amidst a barrage of Harambe memes. During the 2016 presidential election, people even joked that they voted for Harambe as a candidate.

2. Damn Daniel

The “Damn Daniel” trend all started with a viral tweet, which featured a video of teenager Daniel Lara in his white Vans sneakers. Throughout the clip, Lara’s friend comments on his shoes, saying “damn Daniel.” You have to watch it to truly understand why this is Internet gold, and the second top trending meme of the year

3. Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is not only the top Google search of 2016, it is also the third most viral meme of the year. With the game’s U.S. release on July 6, it makes sense that only a few weeks later, the Internet had already gone to work creating memes.

4. Dat Boi

It’s difficult to trace the origin of “Dat Boi,” the meme featuring an animated frog on a unicycle, but several sources believe it was inspired by an older meme on Tumblr from 2015. While pinpointing the source for its popularity is tricky, “Dat Boi” skyrocketed to viral fame in May 2016, when the vast majority of the “Dat Boi” memes were created.

Adding even more humor to this meme, it appears the image may have come from a physics textbook, according to this Twitter user’s discovery:

5. SpongeBob Caveman

Perhaps one of the most visually hilarious meme trends of the year was SpongeBob Caveman, also known as Primitive Sponge. For any SpongeBob SquarePants fans out there, you’ll likely remember the 1999 caveman episode that created the magical creature that is SpongeGar. Fast forward to May 2016, when a Reddit user decided to bring back SpongeGar, sparking the viral meme trend that is now known as SpongeBob Caveman. This timing explains why a spike in Google searches for the meme started in late May.

6. Michael Phelps

If you watched the Rio Olympics, you’re likely familiar with the angry Michael Phelps meme. When the camera featured Phelps’ face in the holding room, as he was listening to music and preparing for his 200m butterfly semifinal, the Internet immediately moved to meme-ify the moment.

What resulted from this unintentional death stare was a series of memes that we are certainly not going to forget anytime soon.

7. Donald Trump

The Donald Trump memes started trending during the first presidential debate in September, and saw its biggest spike in Google searches in early November, when the election took place. Largely created as a response against Trump’s policies and statements, this meme trend was met with controversy from Trump supporters.

8. “Making A Murderer”

The Netflix original documentary “Making A Murderer” left many viewers convinced that Steven Avery was framed and innocent. This inspired a series of comedic memes in his support. Google searches for the memes spiked around mid-January, about a month after the show premiered on December 18.

9. Ken Bone

During the second U.S. presidential debate on September 29, undecided voters had the chance to ask candidates their questions directly. Ken Bone inquired about the candidates’ energy policies, and immediately became an Internet sensation.

The memes started rolling out within the next few days, causing a spike in Google searches.

10. Birdman

During an appearance on the radio show “The Breakfast Club,” rapper Birdman went on a rant and abruptly walked off the show, thus sparking yet another viral meme trend. The first to poke fun at the awkward interview was an Instagram user who uploaded an edited version of the video, with Michael Jordan’s crying face over Birdman’s:

ONE FOR THE BOYS: British designers Christopher Raeburn, Lou Dalton, Astrid Andersen, Craig Green and Sibling have been shortlisted for the BFC/GQ Designer Men’s Wear Fund 2016, the British Fashion Council said Tuesday.
“As the men’s wear industry continues to grow in size and reputation this year’s shortlist shows the diversity and the talent of London’s men’s wear designers,” said Caroline Rush, the BFC’s chief executive. “As well as sheer creativity, these designers also have impressive business strategies and the potential to be Britain’s next big menswear brands.”
The nominees for the prize will take part in a two-week mentoring program where they will receive aid on branding, leadership, commercial retail, e-tail, wholesale and digital innovation. The fund is supported by Vertu, which will hold a mentoring day at Interchange Camden in London.
At the end of the month, the shortlisted designers will provide a business plan to a judging panel and the winner will receive mentoring support for a year as well as a grant of 150,000 pounds, or $ 218,245, towards their business and 50,000 pounds, or $ 72,748, worth of services. The Bessie’s: The Dance Community Awards Excellence Among Its Members

Rarely are dancers celebrated for their work. They almost never break free from an attentive gaze that comes with constant critique and comparison. In the studio, teachers correct every articulation, striving for perfection in the human body. On the stage, critics dissect performers’ motions, searching for error. As unrealistic as Black Swan might have been, the film captured one thing beautifully: dance is a stressful art form, not just tutus and tiaras.

So it’s especially lovely when the dance community can gather together and applaud each other’s efforts. Such is the environment at the Bessie’s, dance’s version of the Academy Awards or the Tony’s. This year, the 31st-annual ceremony took place at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, with its iconic neon-red sign. Bright, plush, velvety décor set the mood, chandeliers cascading to make prisms on the walls. A DJ played music more reminiscent of a club than a cultural event, and the room felt warm, inviting — more than cordial.

2015-10-23-1445612169-2146963-BessiesHosts_CarmelitaTropicana_JockSoto.jpg

Performance artist Carmelita Tropicana and former New York City Ballet principal Jock Soto made an unlikely pair as hosts. She proved eccentric, a serpentine bodysuit hugging her curves as she told too many sex jokes to count. He harbored all of the professional, stoic rigidity of a male ballet dancer whose discipline and concentration led to a 24-year career with George Balanchine’s ensemble. Still, they managed to get along, informal and improvised.

The presenters were all big names in the industry, from dancers to choreographers to programmers. Kyle Abraham took the podium, as did one of the women who launched him, Ella Baff. Ivy Baldwin delivered especially poignant eulogies for her deceased collaborator, Lawrence Cassella, and Marcelo Gomes stunned in a gorgeous silver suit.

As for the winners, most were respectful, earnest, and timid. Amar Ramasar, who was awarded Outstanding Performer, thanked Peter Martins for believing in a kid from the Bronx in an especially memorable speech. And in David Neumann’s acceptance for Outstanding Production in I Understand Everything Better, he admitted something with which any dancer could empathize: he was humbled, amazed, and… tired.

2015-10-23-1445612080-90583-151019_Bessies_awards_022.jpg

Amar Ramasar accepts his award for Outstanding Performer. Photo credit: Yi-Chun Wu.

For me, the only surprise was that Robert Fairchild did not win Outstanding Performer for An American in Paris. I admit, I’m biased, and always will be biased — ballet is what I most enjoy, and I can grasp it much better than some of the alternative works downtown (though I like those, too, for the challenge). But Fairchild blew me away as Jerry, especially in his final dance scene. His charisma, his finesse, it was all magnificent… a triumph for ballet. The fact that it went unrecognized by the Bessie’s — not only Fairchild’s extraordinary dedication to his part, but also Christopher Wheeldon’s engaging choreography — baffled me.

Another notable absence was any nominee from American Ballet Theatre. This did not shock me; I’ve been following the company since I was a child, when Gomes was the new kid on the block, and I know the company is in a period of transition right now. But the hope is that Kevin McKenzie will nurture a new vanguard of artists and technicians, like Martins has at NYCB in recent years.

The evening’s apex: Steve Paxton called in from Paris to accept the 2015 NY Dance and Performance Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Dance. In a video beforehand, he seemed a little peeved to receive a “lifetime achievement” award; after all, he’s still kicking, still innovating, still creating. But on Skype, he was congenial, offering some off-the-cuff advice: everyone should choreograph something at least once in their life. And if you think about it, we choreograph every day. How we move along the street, how we navigate situations — it’s all choreography, whether physical or psychological.

Like most award shows, the Bessie’s sprinkled in a few performances to rupture the seriousness of the situation. After all, it would be a shame to take up the Apollo stage and not use it. Storyboard P, who won the 2015 Emerging Choreographer Award, liquefied his bones in what seemed a tribute to Michael Jackson. Lisa Nelson improvised a sweet solo with a ribbon at its center. But really the only moment that left an impression was when Camille A. Brown emerged in her white gloves. She’s intoxicating, truly, with the star quality that makes her worth watching. These days, you can’t always believe the hype surrounding a choreographer. Believe the hype about Camille A. Brown.

By 9:30, the show was over. Most people headed to an after-party to dance the night away, sans pirouettes and with alcohol and pizza. Everyone seemed to know everyone else — there were no outsiders, except perhaps me, but I was fine with being an outsider looking in. It was nice to look, to see the friendship and appreciation. I don’t envy artists for their vulnerability to the public, but at the Bessie’s, they mingled among others who understood. Speakers emphasized how hard it is to dance in NYC in the 21st century. But they do it because they love it.

That’s what you could feel at the Apollo: all the love.

Jack Among the Indians (Illustrated)

Jack Among the Indians (Illustrated)

A long time ago, before any of you were born, great herds of buffalo fed on the western plains, and wild Indians lived by hunting them. They ate the flesh, wore the skins as clothing, slept in lodges made from the hides, and fashioned tools from different parts of the buffalo’s body. There were few settlements, and as the buffalo roamed far and wide over the treeless land, the Indians followed them; for then both were free. Often a tribe was obliged to defend itself against the attacks of enemies; and its young men often made war journeys into hostile country. Though the daily life of the village was quiet and simple, yet sometimes it was interrupted by most exciting incidents and adventures both of hunting and fighting. You listened attentively to the story of “Jack, the Young Ranchman,” and I hope that you will like to learn what Jack did the next season, when he spent the summer with the buffalo eaters of the Northern Plains, hunted their game, fought their enemies and lived their life.

The Gender Gap Persists, Even Among Hollywood’s Most Rich And Powerful

Female actors in Hollywood are earning less than their male counterparts. On Friday, The Daily Beast released information from the Sony hack which reveals that Jennifer Lawrence received a smaller portion of the back-end compensation for “American Hustle” than her male co-stars, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner.

But according to a recent graphic released by The Washington Post (via the New York Film Academy), Lawrence is not alone. In the year 2013, the 10 highest earning male actors earned between $ 32 million and $ 75 million dollars, while the 10 highest earning female actors earned between $ 11 million and $ 33 million.

The Washington Post also notes that the charts points to other forms of discrimination faced by women in Hollywood:

The chart also suggests that age is a bigger factor for female actresses: Their median age is 34.8, while the median age for male actors is 46.5 … Part of the pay gap is undoubtedly due to women’s lower representation overall: Less than a third of speaking characters in the top 500 films between 2007 and 2012 were women, and only 10.7 percent of movies featured a balanced cast where half of the characters were female.

Earlier this month, leaked data also revealed a gender gap among Sony executives: of the 17 employees at the company who earn $ 1 million or more per year, only one is a woman.
