Pratt Students Help Honor Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond at Annual Fashion Show

NEW YORK — Pratt showcased the work of 17 designers Thursday night at Spring Studios, and honored Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond with the Pratt Fashion Visionary Award.
In an interview Friday, Moss said he hoped students would remember that “the process is supposed to be long and intense, and if they stay the course they will eventually reach the goal and the purpose that was assigned to them by the universe. As artists, we go through the ebbs and flows and sometimes we don’t survive them. I just want them to know that at some point it does get better.”
Jean-Raymond received the award from his mentor Dapper Dan, who can appreciate that sentiment. Over the past four years, the two men have had many conversations and “Sunday talks,” Jean-Raymond said, adding that Dan has always been someone who he could count on pre-Gucci. “We navigated through different fashion industries, but at the end, we ended up in the same place,” Jean-Raymond said.
In addition to researching his next collection for his show in September, the designer said he is working on a signature shoe for Reebok. With his contract with Reebok scheduled to run out this year, the designer said he is

MILAN — Consulting firm Ernst & Young assigned its annual awards on Tuesday evening at the Italian Stock Exchange.
The awards ceremony, which is at its 22nd edition, celebrated entrepreneurs who managed, through their innovative spirit and strategic vision, to create value contributing to the growth of the Italian economy.
In particular, Ernst & Young distributed awards in six categories including Fashion & Retail, Industrial Products, Food & Beverage, Innovation & Digital Transformation, Family Business and Globalization.
Nunzio Colella, founder of fast-fashion labels Alcott and Gutteridge’s parent company Capri Srl, scooped up the prize for the Fashion & Retail category for “being able, starting solely from his brilliance and enthusiasm, to build a reality made of a dense network of sale points, promoting an inclusive approach with his employees and enhancing his territory.”

Born in Naples, Colella started his career in fashion opening a series of multibrand stores in the Eighties. After founding his company Capri in 1988, he introduced the Alcott label in 1990, which was initially sold in multibrand stores. Given the success, he decided to acquire the historic Palazzo Stigliano building in Naples to open Alcott’s first flagship. At the time, the building housed the store of men’s brand Gutteridge,

Hodinkee Makes Annual Collectors Summit Free to Public

As a celebration of its 10th anniversary, Benjamin Clymer, the founder of Hodinkee, decided to forego charging attendees $ 3,000 to attend its Collectors Summit, which will take place in New York from Dec. 7-9.
“It’s a way to give back to our community,” said Clymer. “We decided that this is something we believe in and we figured once every 10 years we could swing it.”
The summit, which will be held inside a loft on Grand Street, will feature talks that can hold up to 150 people along with exclusive product drops, including a collaboration with Swatch.
Hodinkee has grown from a one-man-operated watch site to a 35-person company that produces a magazine, two podcasts and operates online retail. In addition to its limited-edition watch collaborations, which usually generate around $ 3 million in sales per year, it sells around 30,000 leather goods a year. Going forward, the company is targeting lifestyle products and has plans to collaborate on stereo equipment and camera accessories.
Next up is a physical retail space in New York, which Clymer said will be a hub for the watch world that’s open to the public. Clymer said the goal is to create a space that’s not too masculine and feels

Tumi Sets Date for Annual Retail Campaign

Charity, Anyone?: Tumi’s annual retail promotion that supports All Hands & Hearts is slated to run this year from Sept. 13 to Sept. 23. Shoppers enjoy 20 percent off full-price retail items at Tumi stores and at Tumi.com, with 5 percent of total sales earmarked for donation to the charity.
All Hands & Hearts is a nonprofit organization founded by model Petra Nemcova to help rebuild safe and resilient schools in areas hit by natural disasters.
Last year’s event saw Tumi donate $ 400,000 from the customer-sales campaign to the organization, which used the funds to rebuild The Rhodes School of Performing Arts in Houston. The Rhodes School, damaged last year by Hurricane Harvey, is a tuition-free campus that caters primarily to low-income, minority communities.
In addition to the donation, the travel brand helped All Hands & Hearts gather volunteers to work on reconstruction efforts. Tumi also partners with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Waves for Water.
Nemcova, part of the relief efforts in Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, said she heard of the school’s plight from local partners.
“Once we saw firsthand the damage and destruction, we knew we had to find a way to help rebuild the school and were fortunate that our

Gabourey Sidibe to Keynote Fourth Annual TheCurvyCon

TheCurvyCon, the three-day consumer-facing convention celebrating the plus-size community, will return to New York Fashion Week on Sept. 6 to 8 at a new location, Center 415. Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe will keynote the event.
Powered by retailer Dia&Co, the fourth annual edition will connect body positive and plus-size influencers, celebrities and tastemakers and their fans while focusing on the fashion community.
TheCurvyCon cofounders and lifestyle influencers — Chastity Garner Valentine of GarnerStyle.com, and CeCe Olisa of CeCeOlisa.com — raised the seed money for TheCurvyCon by selling the clothes out of their closets in 2015. Now after three sold-out years, they have more than tripled the size of the event in response to the consumer demand.
“This has been a grassroots movement from the beginning,” Olisa said. “We’ve created an in-person experience that reflects the powerful body positive movement happening online. At the same time, we continue to break down barriers in the fashion industry by aligning plus-size fashion with mainstream fashion during New York Fashion Week.”
Garner Valentine added, “Our goal is to facilitate change in the fashion industry. There is still much work to be done, but we are excited to see the conversation on size diversity and inclusivity more forward every year.”

Initiatives in Art and Culture to Hold Annual Fashion and Design Conference

The Initiatives in Art and Culture will present its annual Fashion and Design Conference next month.
This year marks the event’s 19th iteration. It is to be titled “White: Palette Prism, Possibility.” The conference will be held on Nov. 10 and 11 at the Graduate Center for the City University of New York.
IAC founder Lisa Koenigsberg said of the conference’s theme: “A central visual and cultural communicator, color is an incredibly important element in creative industries, both from an aesthetic standpoint and when we examine the associated deeper meanings. In this conference, the color white is examined as a powerful statement of purity and tradition, and as a catalyst for change — a color of origins, of new beginnings and of hope. We believe this hope and the notion of new beginnings is manifested through design and is a driving force throughout the world.”
Speakers include Jason Wu, Hilldun Corp. chief executive officer Gary Wassner, Zac Posen, Shinola president Jacques Panis, Robert Verdi, Daphne Guiness and Ralph Rucci.
Discussions include symposiums like “50 Shades of White: Exploring Color.” That particular talk is to be led by Donald Kaufman, founder of Donald Kaufman Color.
Other discussions include panels on sustainability and the bridal jewelry market.

Jennifer Garner Gets Chummy with Joe Biden and Olivia Wilde at Annual Save the Children Illumination Gala

Jennifer Garner had a fun –and charitable! — night out in New York City on Wednesday.

The actress attended the annual Save the Children Illumination Gala as a guest this year after serving as host for the last three outings. She posed with former Vice President Joe Biden on the carpet and was seen catching up with Olivia Wilde before taking pictures.

The Butter star, 45, later ditched her high heels and slipped on sneakers during the auction portion of the night as she ran around and gave signed Rex Ryan footballs to people who pledged contributions.

Garner also presented the Visionary Award to fashion brand BVLGARI North America and talked about her recent trip to Houston with Save the Children in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

“As flood waters receded, we expanded our response to include childcare programs because childcare centers…provide essential care after a disaster so that parents can rebuild their lives, put their lives back together, return to work,” Garner said. “Save the Children has chosen to make childcare recovery one of our signature programs in the United States, and today we’re helping more than 1,500 centers in Texas restore their services.”

Garner documented her trip to the area on her new Instagram page, giving followers a look at her interacting with children in the area.

The actress serves as a benefactor for the organization and spoke in front of Congress members at a hearing on Capitol Hill in March.

Emma Roberts, Haim Attend Chloé and MOCA’s Third Annual Dinner

“To quote my favorite Oscar Wilde line, ‘You can never be overdressed or overeducated.’ That is why Chloé and MOCA came together,” said Museum of Contemporary Art director Philippe Vergne on Tuesday, when the brand and the museum hosted their third annual dinner.
This year, the event celebrated the recent opening of the Anna Maria Maiolino exhibition at MOCA’s Grand Avenue site. Vergne gave a private tour to guests including Emma Roberts, Aimee Song, Chloe Norgaard, Courtney Trop, Estee and Danielle Haim, Kelis, Kelly Rowland and Thomas Jane. The exhibit includes Maiolino’s early prints, as well as her sculpture and photography. The pièce de résistance was a room filled with unbaked clay sculptures, including a giant wall covered in dots of clay. “Maiolino has this idea of always needing to put something on the table, and to put objects between her and the viewer,” Vergne explained.
Outside the gallery, he paused to introduce a work by another artist, a ping pong table with a lily pond in the middle. The notion of playing games and provoking conversation proved true as Roberts and her stylist Britt Elkin decided to play. The catch-22 was that no one can win the game, as the ball

This year, the event will be hosted by Dave Chappelle and feature Kendrick Lamar and Calvin Harris. One winner (and their friend!) will be chosen by Sept. 7 to receive tickets to the gala, as well as roundtrip airfare to and from New York City and hotel accommodations.

In February, Rihanna stood before a crowd at Harvard University to accept the Humanitarian of the Year Award and encouraged the audience “to make a commitment to help one person.”

“I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart,” she said during her acceptance speech. “My grandmother always used to say if you have a dollar, there’s plenty to share.”

MILAN — Chiara Ferragni, the Italian influencer and entrepreneur behind The Blonde Salad digital platform and the Chiara Ferragni Collection of footwear and accessories, is taking her collaborations to a new level.
The Italian lingerie label Intimissimi asked Ferragni to design all the costumes for its annual “Intimissimi on Ice” show, which will take place on Oct. 6-7.

Details on the costumes have not been disclosed yet.

Anna Nicole Smith’s Daughter Is Adorable In Annual Kentucky Derby Showing

No matter who snags the crown Saturday, Dannielynn Birkhead and father LarryBirkhead have won for the sweetest dad-and-daughter appearance.

The 10-year-old daughter of the late model Anna Nicole Smith continued her annual tradition of hitting the Kentucky Derby red carpet with her father this weekend. Both were decked out in cream and pink outfits Saturday, with Dannielynn topping her outfit off with a headpiece perfectly suited for the festivities.

The pair also made an appearance the night before, all dolled up in formal attire for the 29th Barnstable Brown Kentucky Derby Eve gala.

In an interview with the “Today” show last year, Larry explained that he’s not interested in pushing his daughter into the spotlight.

“People call me all the time and say can she be in a movie, can she model?” Birkhead said at the time. “I didn’t care about it, so I’d say no, she’s not interested. She’s just a regular kid.”

Dannielynn has been making the Kentucky Derby rounds with her dad since 2010, when she was 3 years old. Clearly, her love of pink hasn’t changed a bit. And neither has her close bond with her dad.

Top Hollywood Talent Agency Cancels Annual Oscar Party to Benefit Refugees Instead

One of Hollywood’s top talent agencies is canceling its annual Oscar party and using the money it would have spent on the shindig to help refugees affected by President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban.

United Talent Agency announced on Wednesday that the company would be swapping its annual party for a $ 250,000 donation to the American Civil Liberties Union — the group that challenged Trump’s travel ban and was granted a stay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The company will also be donating part of the money to the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian organization. UTA also announced plans to host a pro-immigration rally two days before the ceremony at its L.A. office.

“This is a moment that demands our generosity, awareness and restlessness,” UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer reportedly wrote in a memo to staff. “Our world is a better place for the free exchange of artists, ideas and creative expression. If our nation ceases to be the place where artists the world over can come to express themselves freely, then we cease, in my opinion, to be America.”

UTA reps some of the industry’s most high-profile stars, including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Harrison Ford and Mariah Carey.

Trump’s executive order, signed Jan. 27, prevents citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S, and indefinitely bars Syrians from crossing the border. The ban has been halted by Homeland Security and several judges across the country, although the Trump administration continues to push for it to be reinstated.

“When fear and division get the better of a society, artists are among the first to feel the impact — and to denounce the ill winds,” Zimmer also reportedly said in his memo.

RELATED VIDEO: President Trump Assails ‘So-Called Judge’ Challenging Travel Ban

The news comes as several people have been prevented from making an appearance at the show due to the ban. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category, already announced that he will not be attending the show even if an exception is made for him. Along with Farhadi, the Syrian subjects in the documentaries The White Helmet and Watani: My Homeland are also unsure if they will be allowed to travel to the U.S. for the awards show, although both teams are still working to find a way for them to attend.

The Academy Awards air live on ABC Feb. 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Bill Nye, Simon Doonan Walk in 1st Annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show

“[The organizers] said to me, ‘can you get into runway mode?’” said Simon Doonan, creative ambassador at large at Barneys, who sported a navy Theory blazer backstage at The Blue Jacket Fashion Show Wednesday night. “And I said, I’m always in runway mode. My problem is not being able to get out of runway mode.”
Held at Pier 59, the first annual fashion show aimed to bring awareness to prostate cancer, a disease that ranks as the second leading cause of death among men. Designers like Joseph Abboud, Nick Graham and Nicole Miller were tapped to create custom designed blue jackets to be worn by the likes of host Carson Kressley, Mario Cantone and Lee Tergesen, among others. A few of the designs are currently up for auction, with proceeds benefiting the National Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Calvin Klein Cancels Annual Bash at Cannes Film Festival

CALVIN SKIPS CANNES: Calvin Klein, which has thrown some of the splashiest events at the Cannes Film Festival in collaboration with the Independent Filmmaker Project for the past five years, is taking a pass this year. The company has decided to cancel its annual party, which over the years has honored such stars as Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Watts, Julianne Moore, Rooney Mara, Emily Blunt, Isabelle Huppert, Mélanie Laurent, Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz. The parties have taken place at a private villa on the French Riviera.
Last year’s event attracted such celebrities as Jake Gyllenhaal, Harvey Weinstein, Rossy de Palma, Joan Smalls and Doutzen Kroes. The party included a huge seafood buffet, a DJ set by Harley Viera-Newton and a live performance by California band Haim.
With the changing of the guard of the design team at Calvin Klein — Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli are both exiting as creative directors of women’s and men’s Collection — sources said the company decided to skip the celebration this year.
Klein confirmed that it won’t be doing an event in Cannes but still supports the IFP, which includes its sponsorship of the Gotham Awards with the presentation of the Calvin Klein Euphoria Grant to an

Apollo Theater Celebrates Its Rich Legacy With 10th Annual Spring Gala

Monday night marked the 10th anniversary of the Apollo Theater’s annual Spring Gala, which was met with much fanfare.

The event, which featured a celebratory benefit concert, was hosted by Extra TV correspondent AJ Calloway and featured star-studded performances from Nile Rodgers and his pioneering disco-funk group Chic, Ne-Yo, Luke James, Rosanne Cash, “The Voice” season 8 contestant Kimberly Nichole and South African a capella trio The Soil.

During his opening monologue, Calloway shared some of his personal experiences and memories of the Apollo.

“I used to sneak into the Apollo when I was in high school,” Calloway said. “I was in [New] Jersey, my parents didn’t know I was here, but I used to watch Amateur Night so I’m very happy to be on this stage. And I started my career here. The first time I was on this stage was ‘106 & Park’ and that was 15 years ago. So I’m really, really happy to be here.”

In addition to Calloway’s return to the Apollo stage, the event also served as a homecoming for Rodgers, who landed his second professional gig performing with the theater’s house band. Prior to taking to the stage to perform a medley of Chic’s biggest hits, Rodgers opened up to The Huffington Post about the significance of headlining this year’s annual gala.

“When I played here I was 19-years-old,” Rodgers said. “I had just finished a year with ‘Sesame Street,’ which was my first professional job. And I was just telling the band how it was the first time I walked out onto this stage. It’s amazing for me to be here now, all these years later playing my own music, which is crazy.”

For Apollo Theater President & CEO, Jonelle Procope the Gala has served as an important part in the theater’s growth for the past 10 years.

“Although the Apollo is now in its 81st year, we have only been a nonprofit since 1991 and I would say it has really been over the last 10 years that the institution has experienced tremendous growth as a nonprofit with expanded artistic, educational and community programs,” Procope said to the Huffington Post.

“The Gala, which is one of our largest fundraisers, has provided crucial support toward those initiatives. It also allows us to celebrate and honor the Apollo’s rich legacy as the musical home for so many legendary artists like Nile Rodgers and the opportunity to continue that legacy as an important springboard for the next generation of artists.”

The benefit, which raises funds for the theater’s education and community outreach programs, also honored James Dolan, President and CEO of Cablevision Systems Corporation and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, who accepted the Corporate Award on behalf of The Madison Square Garden Company, and Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, who accepted the Percy C. Sutton Civic Leadership Award on behalf of The Ford Foundation.

Check out a collection of Apollo Gala performers through the years in the slideshow below.

The 4th Annual Infrasound Music Festival in Black River Falls, Wisconsin

2015-05-09-1431135157-2883323-11174931_608017985999305_3074945794000739631_n.jpg

Beautiful souls swinging their tangled tendrils, orbs of fire tracing invisible geometry, rumbling bass that vibrates your innards, Palo Santo arousing olfactory bliss, and artists caressing canvases with their paintbrushes. This imagery evokes a sense of home within me, a familiarity even if its in an unfamiliar place.

This is the world of the music festival. A place where people come to gather, grow, share, love, give, play, watch, listen and learn. The festival paradigm is unified but also diverse. There is a similarity shared by all festivals which is what creates its growing community. However, each festival offers its own distinct flavor which is what keeps this community diverse.

Infrasound represents a new style in music festivals based on sound system culture and intelligent dance music. A refreshing change from the usual predictable lineup and crowd. – Taylor Winum, co-founder of Infrasound Music Festival.

These idyllic festivals are popping up all over the world, even in unlikely, but not unbelievable, locales. The 4th annual Infrasound Festival will be held on May 28th-31st of 2015 on a pristine lake in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Like many of the world’s greatest music festivals, Infrasound humbly began in 2010 as a warehouse party in downtown Minneapolis. The first official Infrasound Festival took place in Houston, Minnesota in 2012 and then moved to Black River Falls in 2013, where it has a found its home. The founders of this Midwestern festival are Alex Heiligman, David Liberman, and Taylor Winum, whose entire lives are focused on bringing good music to the U.S. The Infrasound family also hosts Infrasound Equinox, another diverse event which is held during the autumnal equinox in September at the same venue.

2015-05-09-1431135231-1352584-11136143_598416523626118_420759980499143366_o.jpg

With a lineup decorated by superheroes of the electronic underground, festival patrons from all over the country rushed to purchase their tickets. The lineup includes Tipper, The Opiuo Band, Benga, Ott, Bluetech, Thriftworks, Russ Liquid, Mr Bill, Mumukshu, Perkulat0r, AtYyA, and many more. Android Jones will be providing Tipper’s kaleidoscopic visuals, a combination that is sure to send you to another dimension. Set amidst an oxygen-rich forest and beneath a delicious looking Milky Way, the venue and the event exist in perfect symbiosis. Festival-goers may enjoy a cool dip into liquid or watch the sunrise paint the glassy water in hues of pink, orange, peach and yellow during Tipper’s lakeside set.

2015 has brought Infrasound Music Festival an enormous amount of attention, so much so in fact, that the event is almost sold out. Online ticket sales have ended, however there is still hope for those who have not yet purchased their festival passes. The founders have decided to use an application process for the remaining tickets. The application aims to ensure that those who are most passionate and supportive of Infrasound and the intimate culture of the festival will get one of these final tickets. The application process will begin on Saturday, May 9th at 2 pm CST and conclude on Friday, May 15th at 11:59 pm CST. Everyone who submits an application will receive a response between May 19th and May 21st.

Infrasound grew out of my boredom with most festivals and shows all over the country and I wanted to create something different. It’s been crazy to watch it grow from a warehouse party into a sold out festival. – Alex Heiligman, co-founder of Infrasound Music Festival

With yet another mystical, magical, and majestic music festival to add to the bucket list, Infrasound promises to be the destination for those who seek the unique. With lakeside sunrise sets, all the fresh air you can breathe, and a community of respectful, creative, inspiring, imaginative and kind human beings, Infrasound Music Festival is not to be missed. The prefix infra- means “below” and infrasound means frequencies that are below the human spectrum of audibility. To be below the sound means to immerse yourself deep within its vibrations and drench yourself in the liquid sound waves of bass music. Together at Infrasound we will dance upon the Earth, above judgement, and below the sound.

American Reference Books Annual 2012: v. 43

American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) provides collection development and reference librarians with critical reviews of all print and online reference materials published in 2011, as well as some resources from 2010 and 2012. Reviews are written by practicing academic, public, and school librarians who are intimately familiar with the needs of libraries and ideally suited to discerning both positive and negative aspects of each resource, including eBooks, electronic databases, and free reference websites. The 2012 edition is organized into four main parts: General Works, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Science and Technology. Topical chapters are arranged alphabetically within each section. Unlike many other reference review sources, ARBA comprehensively covers all materials that will be relevant for academic, public, and school libraries, as well as professional tools that can be used by librarians in these fields.

The Biggest ‘Jackie’ Annual Ever!

The Biggest ‘Jackie’ Annual Ever!

Your daughter, or even your granddaughter, probably has no idea what it was like growing up in the sixties and seventies. Nowadays, MTV, mobile phones, the internet and downloaded pop bypass much of the excitement of rushing to the newsagent each week to find out who were the featured pin-ups, which of your favourite stars were being interviewed and what intriguingly delicate problems Cathy and Claire were tackling. This bumper edition of nostalgic pages is from the magazine that was truly top of the pops with every girl in the country for almost thirty years after its first publication in 1964.The magazine’s heyday came in the seventies when The Osmonds, David Essex, The Bay City Rollers, David Cassidy and Slade were among the regular faces appearing in its pages but it wasn’t just for the pop, TV and film stars that girls beat a path to their local newsagent’s door. Like the original magazine, ‘The Biggest Jackie Annual Ever!’, it includes fashion and beauty tips, puzzles and quizzes to help you find out, for example, the difference between loving someone and being in love with someone, recipes, horoscopes and enthralling Readers’ True Experiences, as well as a smattering of romantic picture story strips. Now is your change to relive all of those golden Jackie moments and show the youngsters in your life what life was like when you were growing up. You can listen to a few hits while you do so, too, because of ‘The Biggest Jackie Annual Ever!’
