Aaron Hernandez’s Ex-Teammate Thinks Fiancée’s Baby Is Another Man’s — and Says Disgraced Athlete ‘Would Be Happy’

Thirteen months after former football star Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in prison, his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, announced that she’s expecting her second child.

“Many of you have had speculated that I may be expecting another miracle which is very accurate, I wanted to take time and process and post when I was ready to. I wanted to have a moment for myself alone with my daughter … we are beyond excited about the new addition and chapter we will soon begin,” Jenkins, 28, wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a bump-revealing photo.

The surprise announcement has left many who knew the former football star wondering what Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence in prison for murder, would have thought of the latest developments.

“Aaron had demons; we all know that,” says a former teammate of Hernandez’s from the University of Florida. “But he really was devoted to his daughter. Boy, did he love her. I think he’d be very glad to know that she was going to have a little sister.”

The former teammate believes the baby is not Hernandez’s.

Hernandez and Jenkins had a complicated relationship. They welcomed their daughter Avielle, 5, in 2012. In November of that year, the two also became engaged, although they never married.

“In many ways, Shayanna was the best thing to ever happen to him,” says the teammate. “He was crazy about her. She knew a lot of things about him, and she accepted him anyway.”

One of the things that Jenkins’ accepted about Hernandez was his bisexuality. “She knew that about him,” says the source, “And she supported him.”

So would Hernandez be okay with the fact that Jenkins has moved on with her life? “She was so loyal to him,” says the former teammate. “He would be happy for her.”

Hernandez, a former tight end for the New England Patriots, was arrested in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a man dating Jenkins’ sister. As he awaited trial, he was charged with the fatal drive-by shootings of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado.

He was convicted of Lloyd’s murder and given sentenced to life in prison; he was acquitted of the double homicide in April 2017 and days later was found dead in his prison cell. The disgraced athlete had killed himself, he was 27.

In May 2017, Jenkins appeared on the Dr. Phil show and said she did not believe the athlete killed himself, despite authorities’ determination otherwise.

“I don’t think this was a suicide,” she told Dr. Phil McGraw, citing his acquittal and pending appeal on the Odin case. “That would make me doubt that he took his own life. He was very positive, so excited to come home.”

She added that Hernandez had spoken with their daughter after his acquittal and told her, “Daddy’s gonna be home.”

Driver Survives Metal Pipe Crushing His Van on the Highway: ‘Another Foot to the Left and He Would Be Dead’

An Orlando driver is lucky to be alive.

On Saturday morning, a Mack truck driver hauling scrap metal was driving westbound on the State Road 528 exit to Interstate 4 when he lost control of his truck, struck the guardrail and overturned.

As the truck tipped over, a large metal pipe tumbled off the overpass and landed on top of 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar’s Pontiac van, crushing it.

“Another foot to the left and he would be dead,” Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes tells PEOPLE. “He had no idea. He didn’t see it coming. It came down right in the middle of his van. It is miraculous he didn’t get more than a scratch on his face.”

Montes says Escobar was able to walk out of the van on his own. “He wasn’t trapped or anything,” she says.

Montes is thankful there wasn’t anyone in the passenger seat. “If there had been any passenger that passenger would have been dead,” she says.

Escobar was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and has since been released.

The truck driver, 33-year-old Antonio Santiago Wharton, was uninjured and ticketed for careless driving.

Montes say the ramp has been the site of numerous accidents and fatalities.

“We have had so many crashes there,” she says. ” They take the ramp too fast, hit the guardrail and end up overturning. We have had a couple of fatalities from semis doing that.”

Luckily, not this time.

“I think everybody is just amazed,” says Montes. “In my 23 years this is in the top 3 when you look at a crash and someone survives.”

How A-Rod’s Relationship with J.Lo Is Different for the Athlete: ‘This Is Another Level,’ Says Source

J-Rod is going strong.

Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez hit the town in Miami, where the athlete is in town for work commitments surrounding the MLB All-Star game.

On Sunday night, Rodriguez, 41, was accompanied by Lopez, 47, as he hosted a dinner at Prime 112 for a group of friends from Fox Sports, including Joe Buck, Frank Thomas and John Smoltz. Guests dined on steak (for Rodriguez) and seafood (for Lopez) and fried Oreos and sipped on D’Usse Cognac.

“They were celebrating the All-Star game in Alex’s hometown,” says a source about the couple. “Jennifer was talking baseball with the boys.”

After dinner, the duo headed to the 1 Hotel South Beach for New Era’s MLB All-Star party. According to an onlooker, the couple ducked into the exclusive bash via a private entrance and were brought directly to a VIP room.

FROM COINAGE: These Athletes Are Only Getting Richer After Leaving the Field

Jetting between Miami and New York, the couple — who first stepped out publicly in March — are “doing great,” adds the source. “They are incredibly happy.”

According to the source, Lopez is on “another level” for Rodriguez when compared to his past girlfriends. “She’s amazing. She comes to this dinner and there are 20 people there, a lot of sports celebs and big guys in the business, and she can sit right down with them and start talking sports,” says the source. “She loves baseball.”

Goop Deletes Yet Another Strange Health Claim After Getting Fact-Checked By NASA

At this point, we’re not surprised when Goop’s health and wellness claims turn out to be shady. But this latest case is out-of-this-world strange.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site pulled a claim about “energy-balancing” body stickers after Gizmodo spoke with a NASA expert who pointed out the claim was untrue. Goop initially promoted the pricey Body Vibes stickers ($ 60 for a 10-packby claiming they “rebalance the energy frequency in our bodies” and even treat certain ailments thanks in part to being made with the “same conductive carbon material NASA uses to line space suits so they can monitor an astronaut’s vitals during wear.”

But Gizmodo’s Rae Paoletta published a piece Thursday in which a NASA expert pointed out the agency’s spacesuits don’t contain conductive carbon material at all, not to mention he found the supposed science behind the product to be “a load of BS.” Goop subsequently pulled the spacesuit claim, though not the piece promoting the stickers.

Meanwhile, Body Vibes’ website still claims its stickers “use an exclusive material originally developed for NASA” that “can hold specific frequency charges that naturally stimulate the human body’s receptors.”

Suuure they do.

A post shared by Body Vibes (@mybodyvibes) on

Goop is no stranger to sticky health claims: This year alone, the brand caught fire for plugging needless products like leaf-scented perfume and pricey “anti-mold” shower heads. Then there’s the potentially dangerous health advice, like its suggestions to use vaginal eggs and consider iodine supplements, which can actually harm some healthy people.

Through it all, Paltrow stands by her brand. She recently announced she’s taking a break from acting to focus on being a female business leader, a role “that people are not comfortable with,” she said this week at the Cannes Lions Festival. She also joked to Jimmy Kimmel about her site’s wacky recommendations earlier this month, saying, “I don’t know what the fuck we talk about!”

After this latest go-round, we definitely don’t either. Meanwhile, Goop is looking into NASA’s comments, according to a statement sent to HuffPost:

As we have always explained, advice and recommendations included on goop are not formal endorsements and the opinions expressed by the experts and companies we profile do not necessarily represent the views of goop. Our content is meant to highlight unique products and offerings, find open-minded alternatives, and encourage conversation. We constantly strive to improve our site for our readers, and are continuing to improve our processes for evaluating the products and companies featured. Based on the statement from NASA, we’ve gone back to the company to inquire about the claim and removed the claim from our site until we get additional verification.

Pippa Middleton Stuns At Yet Another Wedding

Newlyweds Pippa Middleton and James Matthews are positively owning wedding season style.

The duo touched down in Europe to attend a friend’s nuptials in Sweden on Saturday after their epic honeymoon abroad. Pippa rocked a floor-length floral gown from Erdem and walked hand-in-hand with her new husband, who wore a tailored tuxedo and classic white bowtie.

Pippa really knows how to stand out at a wedding, as evidenced by her infamously poofy bridesmaid dress from the ‘90s (not to mention her other, more famous bridesmaid dress).

Since their own ceremony last month, Pippa and James have flaunted their fashion prowess in Sydney, Australia and also holed up on a private island, presumably working on their tans.

Clearly, this Middleton can rock any role at a wedding. We can’t wait for the next event!

Another Victory For ‘Wonder Woman’ As ‘The Mummy’ Gets Buried At The Box Office

“The Mummy” is no match for “Wonder Woman.”

During its first weekend in theaters, the Tom Cruise monster movie debuted at No. 2, earning a tepid $ 32 million in North American grosses. “Wonder Woman” retained the top spot, collecting an impressive $ 57.2 million.

That “Wonder Woman” figure is especially noteworthy because superhero flicks tend to see steep declines ― about 60 percent ― during their second weekend in theaters, once the most faithful fanboys and -girls have already scurried to the multiplexes. The first major comic-book adaptation directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins’ film fell by only 45 percent, the least of any modern superhero movie.

“Woman” has now accrued about $ 205 million domestically and another $ 230.2 from foreign markets.

This weekend’s tallies are as much a victory for “Wonder Woman” as they are a defeat for the critically derided “Mummy.” Other recent big-screen iterations of the character ― 1999’s “The Mummy” (starring Brendan Fraser), 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” 2002’s “The Scorpion King” and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” ― premiered to heftier sums.

Universal Pictures has a lot riding on this latest reboot, as it is meant to launch the Dark Universe, an expensive franchise that’s slated to span several movies. Stateside audiences were largely uninterested in the inaugural installment, putting the Dark Universe in a precarious position. That said, major studios often rely on international grosses to support tentpole releases nowadays, and this weekend’s $ 141.8 million in overseas revenue means Universal can, on some level, ignore domestic patrons’ ambivalence.

Holdovers “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” ($ 12.3 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” ($ 10.7 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” ($ 6.2 million) round out the Top 5.

Another winner: “It Comes at Night,” a low-budget horror film that trendy indie studio A24 released nationwide. The post-apocalyptic chiller collected $ 6 million, a decent total for a low-budget title costing $ 5 million.

“Baywatch” ($ 4.6 million), “Megan Leavey” ($ 3.8 million), “Alien: Covenant” ($ 1.8 million) and “Everything, Everything” ($ 1.6 million) complete the Top 10.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Will End With Another Cliffhanger

“Stranger Things” Season 2 is shaping up to be an Eleven out of 10.

Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin already told HuffPost that Season 2 of the breakout Netflix series is going to be better than Season 1, and now Gaten Matarazzo is here to hype fans up even more.

The actor is teaming up with Holiday Inn for their “Summer of Smiles” event, which, among other things, involves chocolate milk happy hours at participating hotels. One of Matarazzo’s most memorable scenes from “Stranger Things” is when his character Dustin discovers a stash of chocolate pudding in school, so chocolate milk happy hours seem right up his alley.

While casually hanging out by a pool, the actor filled us in on what to expect in Season 2. (You can watch the interview in the video above.)

Ladies, gentlemen, Demogorgons, get ready for another cliffhanger.

Matarazzo said people can look forward to “a good amount of explanation that they’ve been looking for, but also there are some new stories coming in that you’re gonna want to hear about if there is a Season 3. Also, we got another cliffhanger in there for ya, so that’s gonna be exciting.”

The actor told HuffPost that the new season is action-packed, and you’ll learn more about the Upside Down.

But we can’t help but think, “What could the cliffhanger be? And what are the explanations we’re finally going to get?”

One revelation you probably shouldn’t count on is that Dustin is one of the test subjects like Eleven. Matarazzo told us that’s the craziest “Stranger Things” theory he’s heard so far … but he’s into it.

“Who doesn’t want to be like Eleven? Eleven’s awesome,” the actor said.

“Stranger Things” Season 2 is out Oct. 31.

PopPolitics: ‘War Machine’ Director on the Futility of Another Troop Surge in Afghanistan (Listen)

Melania Trump Snubs ANOTHER Of Donald’s Attempts To Hold Her Hand

It’s likely unintentional, but Melania Trump has yet again snubbed her husband, President Donald Trump, as he attempted to hold her hand on Tuesday.

The moment happened when FLOTUS and POTUS arrived in Rome for their first audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican. It’s the couple’s third stop in the administration’s first international tour; they were in Saudi Arabia over the weekend and Israel earlier this week.

While deplaning from their flight from Tel Aviv, Trump made a move to hold Melania’s hand. Melania ― who probably didn’t see her husband’s gesture ― swipes her hair behind her ear instead.

Trump then put his hand behind her back to hide the fumble:

This comes just a day after Melania swatted Trump’s hand away on the tarmac in Tel Aviv, which was first spotted by Twitter user @raggapegs:

We know Melania doesn’t mind holding hands because there are photographs of the two doing so during this same trip.

Last month, Trump was criticized for walking far ahead of his wife while departing Air Force One. Etiquette expert Elaine Swann told HuffPost that “the proper thing for him to do is to wait for his spouse at the bottom of the stairs and then take her hand and assist her down the last few steps as she comes down.”

So at least it seems that Trump is now making an effort ― fumbled or not. Maybe Melania simply prefers to keep to herself while deplaning.

Why Caroline Rhea Says She Will Never Host Another Reality Show After The Biggest Loser

Caroline Rhea learned one important lesson while hosting The Biggest Loser: Reality shows are not for her.

The actress says she was uncomfortable in her hosting gig during the first three seasons of the reality competition show that saw contestants try to lose large amounts of weight for money.

“ that I don’t want to be the host of a reality show,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I am not the kind of person who wants to tell somebody they’re eliminated. Ever. Ever.”

For more from Caroline Rhea, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Rhea, 53, says she was not a fan of the competitive and often cutthroat atmosphere the show promoted.

“The drama, the tension, the manipulation — it’s not for me,” she says.

From Coinage: See Where 6 Stars Were Before They Were Famous

The Sabrina the Teenage Witch alum says she struggled each week when it came time to announce who was going home — even going as far as to purposely delay having to make the announcement.

“When it was time to eliminate someone, I’d be like, ‘Does anyone have anything else to say?’ ” she says. “I didn’t want anybody to leave with a bad taste in their mouth.”

Drake Rep Slams Former Porn Star’s Paternity Accusation: ‘She’s Just Another Woman Claiming He Got Them Pregnant’

Drake is hitting back at accusations from former porn star Sophie Brussaux, who claims she is pregnant with his child.

Brussaux—who was spotted with the rapper, 30, in January following his split from Jennifer Lopez—has hired two major New York City attorneys to begin the proceedings to prove paternity and seek child support, TMZ reports.

The site says Brussaux claims she is three and-a-half months pregnant, and believes the conception occurred at the end of January. A photo of the pair together in Amsterdam was taken on Jan. 24.

“If it’s in fact Drake’s child, which he does not believe it is, he will do right by the child,” Drake’s rep tells PEOPLE. “She’s just another woman in a long line of women claiming he got them pregnant.”

FROM COINAGE: What Is the Grammy Bounce? (No, It’s Not a Dance Move)

Brussaux also claims to have texts, purportedly from Drake, urging her to undergo an abortion. A rep for Drake tells PEOPLE that they have not seen the message and cannot comment on its veracity.

Brussaux didn’t immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.

SHOPPING NEWS UPDATE:

Ivanka Trump’s Brand Was Purposely Mislabeled Under Another Name At Stein Mart

Another day, another questionable development involving Ivanka Trump’s clothing line. Or, in this case, lack thereof.

Business of Fashion reported Monday that discount retailer Stein Mart has been selling Trump’s merchandise in stores labeled under another designer’s name ― Adrienne Vittadini Studio.

The move undoubtedly raises eyebrows about the motives of G-III, Trump’s licensing company. Brands like Ivanka Trump oftentimes don’t like to be associated with lower-tier retailers like Stein Mart, so both BoF and The Cut questioned whether the move was made to disassociate Trump’s name from the retailer. But Trump’s designs sell at other off-price stores like T.J. Maxx, so that doesn’t totally add up.

Trump’s brand saw an increase in sales in 2016 and a huge spike following the controversial “free commercial” Kellyanne Conway gave the brand on television in February 2017, when she encouraged Americans to buy Ivanka Trump’s brand.

But another theory could be that unlike higher-end stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, which dropped the brand altogether, the move was a way for Stein Mart to distance itself from the brand without having to actually distance itself from its clothing.

In a statement sent to The Huffington Post, G-III revealed that it worked on its own accord to change the labels ― a move that is weird, but technically legal, and, according to BoF, “commonplace”” for some brands.

“G-IIII accepts responsibility for resolving this issue, which occurred without the knowledge or consent of the Ivanka Trump organization,” the statement said. “G-III has already begun to take corrective actions, including facilitating the immediate removal of any mistakenly labeled merchandise from its customer. The Ivanka Trump brand continues to grow and remains very strong.”

A request for comment from both Authentic Brands Group (which licenses Adrienne Vittadini) and Stein Mart were not immediately returned. But as Susan Scafidi, professor of fashion law at Fordham Law School and founder of the Fashion Law Institute, pointed out to BoF,  if Adrienne Vittadini was not aware of the label swapping, there could be a bigger issue at hand.

“If the original label is replaced with that of a third party unaware of the substitution, the responsible party would be liable to the third party,” she said.

It might be time to check the labels on your most recent Stein Mart purchases, people.

All Signs Point To Another Heartbreaking ‘Walking Dead’ Death

It looks like we’re saying “peace” to another “Walking Dead” character.

With an “all-out war” supposedly on the way, you know at least one other main character on the show is probably going down, and it looks like we now know who it will be.

Yeah, it’s about time to say goodbye to Sasha.

Sonequa Martin-Green is set to star on the new series “Star Trek: Discovery,” and while that is great for the actress, it’s not so good for her “Walking Dead” character.

Even more heart-wrenching, we’re just getting over the fact that Abraham gave Sasha a peace sign before his death in the season premiere. Now you’re gonna lay this shiz on us?

When asked about the impact of the new job on her “Walking Dead” role, Martin-Green told Entertainment Weekly she “can’t say anything.”

The actress said, “I can say that the story is as impactful and powerful and dynamic as it always has been, and there’s nothing to worry about where that’s concerned.”

Showrunner Scott Gimple was optimistic, telling EW that Martin-Green can “do anything.”

We don’t doubt that. We just think she’ll “do anything” while going where no woman has gone before on “Star Trek.”

In addition to the vague comments from Martin-Green, dedicated spoiler group The Spoiling Dead Fans have already spread rumors that Sasha will die in the second half of Season 7.

The reports also say that Michael Cudlitz, aka Abraham, may be making an appearance in the finale, so get your tissues ready.

Peace out.

Meryl Streep Is About To Add Another Major Award To Her Mantel

Meryl Streep will soon be able to add another prestigious award to her ever-growing résumé.

The Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning star will be honored with the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Ally for Equality Award, in recognition of her longtime support of the LGBTQ community, in February. The actress, who was last seen on the big screen this summer in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” will be presented with the award at the 2017 HRC Greater New York Gala, slated for Feb. 11 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

HRC President Chad Griffin praised Streep, 67, for standing up for the LGBTQ community “throughout her phenomenal career” in a blog post on his organization’s website.

“Whether through her iconic roles that raised the visibility of LGBTQ people, or by boldly speaking out for equality, Meryl Streep embodies the very nature of what it means to be an ally to our community,” he said.

In August, Streep opened up about her connection to the LGBTQ community in an interview with PrideSource. “I just can’t remember when [LGBTQ] people were not in my life,” she said. “I’ve grown up with gay people and been in love with gay people.”

Streep is no stranger to playing LGBT characters, too. In 1979, she played a lesbian in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan,” and was bisexual and shared a smooch with Allison Janney in “The Hours.” Then, of course, there was her much buzzed-about onstage lip-lock with Sandra Bullock at the 2010 Critics’ Choice Awards. And who could forget about her fantastical love scene in “Angels in America,” in which an angel (played by Emma Thompson) brought her to orgasm while hovering over Manhattan?

She’s also courted a sizable LGBTQ fanbase with quotable turns in “She-Devil,” “Death Becomes Her” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Another Part of a Long Story

Another Part of a Long Story

An engrossing biography about the marital breakdown of a major literary figure, of particular interest for what it reveals about O’Neill’s creative process, activities, and bohemian lifestyle at the time of his early successes and some of his most interesting experimental work. In addition, King’s discussion of Boulton’s efforts as a writer of pulp fiction in the early part of the 20th century reveals an interesting side of popular fiction writing at that time, and gives insight into the lifestyle of the liberated woman.” -Stephen Wilmer, Trinity College, DublinBiographers of American playwright Eugene O’Neill have been quick to label his marriage to actress Carlotta Monterey as the defining relationship of his illustrious career. But in doing so, they overlook the woman whom Monterey replaced-Agnes Boulton, O’Neill’s wife of over a decade and mother to two of his children. O’Neill and Boulton were wed in 1918-a time when she was a successful pulp novelist and he was still a little-known writer of one-act plays. During the decade of their marriage, he gained fame as a Broadway dramatist who rejected commercial compromise, while she mapped that contentious territory known as the literary marriage. His writing reflected her, and hers reflected him, as they tried to realize progressive ideas about what a marriage should be. But after O’Neill left the marriage, he and new love Carlotta Monterey worked diligently to put Boulton out of sight and mind-and most O’Neill biographers have been quick to follow suit. William Davies King has brought Agnes Boulton to light again, providing new perspectives on America’s foremost dramatist, the dynamics of a literary marriage, and the story of a woman struggling to define herself in the early twentieth century. King shows how the configuration of O’Neill and Boulton’s marriage helps unlock many of O’Neill’s plays. Drawing on more than sixty of Boulton’s published and unpublished writings, including her 1958 memoir, Part.

My First Time Sleeping — And Falling In Love — With Another Woman

Sometimes, the path to falling in love takes a beautiful, wholly unexpected turn.

In the Glamour magazine video above, a woman named Lindsey discusses how she slowly fell in love with another woman, even though she never expected to be in a same-sex relationship

As Lindsey explains it, her game plan as an 18-year-old new college student was simple: Hook up with boys ― lots of them. The one thing she hadn’t planned for? Falling in love with her “chipper,” almost annoyingly nice roommate, a girl also named Lindsay.

“[We started] hooking up in secret, still totally convinced that we were both straight: we were just best friends, this is totally just what best friends did,” Lindsey says she told herself. “But long story short: We’re still roommates and best friends today ― we’re also in a relationship.”

Hear how the story unfolds in the video above.

Another British Flop: Men’s Wear Retailer Austin Reed Follows BHS Into Administration

LONDON — The British high street is looking more and more like a graveyard with a second heritage retailer, men’s wear brand Austin Reed, collapsing into administration just 24 hours after British Home Stores did the same.
Austin Reed, which was founded in 1900, had already been undergoing a turnaround at the hands of distressed retail specialists Alteri Investors. Alteri had recently taken a stake in the company after advising on its turnaround. The fall into administration, Britain’s equivalent of Chapter 11, leaves 1,184 jobs at risk.
The retail brand that decades ago stood shoulder-to-shoulder with British men’s wear greats such as Burberry, Aquascutum and Daks fell victim to a combination of fast-changing consumer habits, the shift to omnichannel retailing and an overarching crisis in the formal suiting arena that has seen men favor fashion-forward, sportier shapes and trans-seasonal fabrics over traditional, tailored investment pieces.
On Tuesday, administrators from Alix Partners, the international business advisory firm, said they were called in by Austin Reed’s directors due to “cash flow difficulties arising from challenging retail market conditions.”
The administrators confirmed that Austin Reed would continue to trade while Alix explores “all possible options” for its future, including a sale of all or parts of the business.

Yet Another Reason Advertisers Should Embrace Body Diversity

Academic studies can be fascinating… and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you.

The Background
When it comes to women’s bodies, academics have identified a “tyranny of slenderness” in contemporary culture. This “tyranny” is perpetuated through the ultra-thin models almost exclusively featured in ads. But while advertisers have defaulted to the thin ideal, research has yet to prove conclusively that this tactic actually sells more stuff. (Research has been able to prove that looking at all of those unattainable bodies reinforces the thin ideal and makes women feel bad, so there’s that.)

The Setup
In a recently published study, researchers from Baylor University wanted to see if the “thin sells” maxim made sense, so they surveyed 239 women ages 16 to roughly 65 to find out how much each woman internalized the thin ideal. Then, they randomly divided the women into three groups to see if they would buy handbags based off of particular advertisements. One group was shown five ads for handbags with “skinny” models and another group was shown five handbag ads featuring “average size” models (these were the “skinny” models Photoshopped to look a bit heavier). The last group was shown ads with no models, just handbags. The researchers also collected their basic demographic information, as well as each woman’s body mass index.

The Findings
Of the 239 women in the sample, only 30 percent were what the researchers called “high internalizers” who fully subscribed to the thin ideal. The other 70 percent were either ambivalent (45 percent) or “low internalizers” who rejected the thin ideal (25 percent). Ads with ultra-thin models only convinced women who were “high internalizers” to buy the handbags; otherwise model body size had no direct impact on the effectiveness of an ad — the “average size” models worked just as well as the “skinny” models. Fun facts about those “high internalizers”: These women were younger, consumed more media, earned more money and were generally unhappier with their bodies than the other women in the study.

The Takeaway
If, as this study would have you believe, advertisers pander to the insecurities of a small percentage of women, then also they’re likely alienating 70 percent of female consumers. It seems that a wider range of bodies are just as effective, if not more, at selling products, so perhaps that’s incentive enough for advertisers to embrace body diversity on a wider scale.

Until that actually happens, it might be helpful for women to keep in mind that previous research has shown that only 5 percent of women can actually achieve the thin ideal — just something to consider while you’re being bombarded with nearly 3,000 ads on a daily basis.

L.A. Reid Says It’s Not ‘Realistic’ For Mariah Carey To Make Another Number One Hit

Mariah Carey has a new compilation of her number one hits entitled, “#1 to Infinity.” Sound familiar? Yes, it’s her third. On Monday, the songstress gave fans a sneak peek of the music video for the album’s lead single, “Infinity.”

Although the single failed to crack Billboard’s Top 10 charts — it debuted at 82 earlier this month— Carey’s longtime label boss, L.A. Reid, says it’s not “realistic” to expect the Grammy Award-winning songstress to regain her previous chart-topping success in today’s music climate.

“Mariah Carey made her first hit record in 1991. To even be on the radio at this point in her career is a huge accomplishment, because radio doesn’t cater to veteran artists or legends,” he said.

But he didn’t stop there. In a new interview with Billboard, Reid explained why he feels veteran artists such as Carey, Bruce Springsteen and Prince have difficulty earning radio airplay.

“Radio caters to in-the-moment stars… Nobody that put out records 25 years ago is going to have a No. 1. Not Paul, Stevie, Bruce, Mick or Keith. Not Prince, not anyone. So if she can get on the radio, we’ve done damn good. Would we like to have a No. 1? F– yeah, I’m greedy. But it’s not realistic.”

Reid’s revealed his solution for veteran artists to the mag. “I like concept records, I like the idea of thematic, storytelling records. I love duets and the Great American Songbook. I think a great vocalist should un-cage themselves and think about things like that sometimes,” he stated.

“I mean, Frank Sinatra did it. It’s fun to sing songs you love. And let’s not forget that one of Mariah’s biggest hits, ‘I’ll Be There,’ was a cover. There are many things that Mariah can still do.”

Josh Hartnett Lost Out On Another Role Because He Passed On ‘Batman’

Josh Hartnett regrets passing on “Batman,” but not for the reason you may think.

Speaking to HuffPost Live on Wednesday, the actor explained that he’d met with Christopher Nolan while the director was casting for the 2005 installment, but he’d actually hoped to discuss his next film, “The Prestige,” instead.

“[‘Batman’] was not what I was interested in,” Hartnett recalled. “I really wanted to convince him that when he did the ‘The Prestige,’ maybe hire me.”

“And then, of course, as time went on, he ended up hiring the guy who he hired to play ‘Batman’ to play in ‘The Prestige,'” Hartnett continued, referring to Christian Bale.

The experience served as a teachable moment for the “Penny Dreadful” star.

“I realized much later that this is a relationship business,” said Hartnett, adding that he “regret[s] not forming a relationship with a great filmmaker [Christopher Nolan].”

“That was not necessarily where my head was at the time,” he concluded.

Another Chance At Love: Why My Second Marriage Totally Rocks

Your divorce diploma is still fresh.

The anger and bitterness rip through you like a terrible case of food poising.

The last thing on your mind is getting married again.

A few years go by. You start to date. Maybe you’re serious about someone. And maybe you’re a little gun shy about tying the knot again. I get it. I’ve been there, too.

After the implosion of my first marriage, which I thought would last forever, I never in a million years imagined that I would ever get married again. If my 19 year marriage could end in massive failure, what chance did a second marriage have? Three years after my divorce I was perfectly happy being the yoga teaching, empty-nested, crazy dog lady.

Just as I was making plans to sell my house and move, I received an email from someone I hadn’t heard from or seen in 25 years. He wrote that it had been a long time and that he’d love to see me. My first boyfriend from high school, a blast from my past… of course I wrote back and gave him my phone number.

He called the next night and we met for coffee at 9 PM. We stayed up all night, traveling back and forth through time, remembering who broke up with whom. I fell crazy upside down in love all over again. He proposed two months later and we were married three months after that.

Nearly nine years ago we joined our families together, his four kids, my two kids (and my two dogs), and we embraced the extended families that accompany second marriages.

We came together not has broken halves looking for our other half but as two complete and whole people. Our marriage is stronger than either of our first marriages because we respect each other and see each other as individuals.

That night in the coffee shop nine years ago, my husband said to me, “you are the same bold and brazen girl I knew in high school.” In that moment I knew I never had to be anyone other than me with him.

There is truth and authenticity in my second marriage which was never in my first marriage. My husband and I can be raw and real and vulnerable without the fear that our marriage is in danger or that our vulnerability will be used against us when we least expect it.

A few nights ago we opened up a bottle of wine. It’s so easy to fall into conversation with my husband and talk about this and that. I watched as he poured me a glass of red warmth. A Merlot with a hint of smoke. We listened to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven.

“Did we ever go to a school dance together?” he asked. Maybe we did. I don’t remember. Neither does he. He took my hand and led me around in a slow circle.

I remembered making out in the hallway in high school, my back up against the lockers, his body pressed hard into mine. My psychology teacher interrupted us and pulled me into his class room, admonishing me, “young ladies don’t behave this way in public.”

I remembered when I was 16 and my husband was 17. Damn… he could make my toes curl. At 51, he still can.

Sometimes love has a way of sneaking in through the back door when you’re busy making other plans. If you’re still on the fence about giving marriage another shot, take your time and trust your gut.

I had no desire to get married again and then BAM, there I was in the middle of a park with over 100 people watching me say “I do” to the man who once was the boy I first fell in love with.

Bill Maher Makes Yet Another Joke About Bill Cosby

Bill Maher made yet another joke referencing the recent sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby.

On Friday night’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host mentioned Cosby during a segment about Sarah Palin. While discussing the Republican voices who criticized a recent Palin speech, Maher said, “Sean Hannity asked, ‘Did the teleprompter go down?’ The Washington Examiner questioned whether she should be included in future Republican events. And Bill Cosby said, ‘I wouldn’t drug her with your drink.'”

The host has made jokes about the allegations against Cosby on numerous occasions, including during his monologue for the Nov. 14 episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher.” While discussing Obama’s then-new initiatives, he said: “If you’re a Republican, you see Obama as Bill Cosby sexually assaulting the Constitution.”

Maher also joked about the comedian on the Nov. 21 episode of the show. “It was a bad week for Bill Cosby,” Maher said. “On the plus side, he has lots of pills lying around that can make him forget the whole thing.”

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

Don’t Buy Another Pair of Jeans Until You Read This: The Trick for Longer, Leaner Legs

It feels like there are a million different pairs of jeans out there. Some are good and some are…ugly. A pair that fits perfectly is worth a million bucks, while others that don’t do anything for your shape should be tossed as quickly as you can get your arms moving. And even though we just discovered that most of us have way too many pairs in the closet, there’s no time like the new year to toss what doesn’t work and invest in a pair that’s guaranteed to make you look ah-mazing.

dl-1961-jeans

For expert insight on fit, I consulted with Sarah Ahmed, creative director of DL1961, and pestered her about how my legs can look long and lean because, honestly, what girl doesn’t want that?

For length, your best bet is “by far a mid-rise skinny jean. An 8.5- to 9-inch rise really does miracles for the appearance of both the waist and legs.” As an alternative, try a kick flare (it’s the style on the far left above). It’s more subtle than the mega-bells you might be thinking of and can actually add inches, especially if you get your pair tailored to wear with heels or platforms.

If you want to slim stems, Sarah said to look for styles with longer inseams (ask a sales associate to identify some of their options) and try on the darkest shade possible. “A deep blue or black wash tends to smooth the legs, making them appear much leaner.” I brought up the question of moto ribbing, which I think looks eternally cool but can cut legs in a not-so-flattering way. “You can have too much horizontal detailing,” she warned me, suggesting I shop for “ribbing that’s slanted to not have that dreaded digging-in effect.”

What’s your current favorite pair of jeans? Is there a miracle brand that always looks good on you?

Forget the Media: Another View of Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is about a freelance news videographer who hunts down the most graphic shots of mangled bodies and still-warm blood he can find, and then sells them to local television news. He becomes quite good at his craft and makes lots of money. And if that was all it was all it was about, it would be a compelling condemnation of our current media culture.

But it’s about much more than that. And as such, it is far more compelling and far scarier.

When the videographer in question, Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), repositions a dead body in the aftermath of a traffic accident in order to create a better shot, it might seem inhuman. But there’s really nothing new there. Haskell Wexler did something very similar 45 years ago in Medium Cool, a movie which is in fact primarily concerned with the role of the media in modern America, and which should be much better-known than it is in 2014. Several years later, the Sidney Lumet/Paddy Chayefsky collaboration Network provided the definitive satire on the subject. I think first-time director Dan Gilroy is aiming at a broader and more insidious modern problem in Nightcrawler.

The most terrifying moments in Nightcrawler do not involve Louis staging crime scenes or manipulating information to benefit his film clips. The brazenness he shows in ducking under police tape to get closer to the scene is de rigueur in the paparazzi era. It is when he talks about his ambition, his carefully-considered business plan, his savvy branding strategies, that Louis is at his scariest. And that is where Nightcrawler moves beyond the mostly-effective satire on modern media and becomes a sharp condemnation of 21st-century corporate mentality.

I had a feeling something was off in Gilroy’s message about the media as I watched Louis interacting with TV news producer Nina Romina (Rene Russo). If Gilroy wanted to say something specifically about the way “news” has been commodified in 2014, a smart guy like Louis would not be going to a third-rate local network affiliate. That’s so 1980s — back when local network affiliates mattered. Today, they have become so marginalized that most media outlets would jettison them in a heartbeat if the FCC would allow it. If this were about media, at the very least, Louis would be going to cable news programs which have been making good coin by engaging in the fear-mongering that Nina champions. And he’d more likely be seeking out online tabloids — especially sites like TMZ or Radar that may want to move their celebrity-based reportage into general suburban blood and mayhem.

I was also confused while watching as to the effectiveness of the other main figure in the movie, Riz Ahmed’s Rick. Rick is a very weak character. Gilroy gives him the briefest of backstories. He is young and homeless and ethnic, and desperately needs the job which Louis offers. He speaks up for himself in a halting voice but is generally overwhelmed by the hurricane that is Louis. In all their scenes together, Louis is the driving force. Rick’s role is almost entirely reactive. When he does attempt to stand up for himself, Louis has no trouble putting him down. As I watched, it seemed clear to me that Gilroy was far more interested in Louis and Nina, and even in rival nightcrawler Joe Loder (Bill Paxton), with whom Louis may or may not partner. Upon reflection, I’ve come to believe that Gilroy essentially abandoned the character of Rick on purpose, because it serves as a good metaphor for his larger message.

So if Nightcrawler is not, at its core, a condemnation of the current condition of news media, what is that larger message? Gilroy’s movie is about a society that has become unmoored, a society in which traditional economic and moral structures no longer function. Corporations may have always been greedy, but in Nightcrawler those corporations don’t even exist. They are not present to offer a pension or health care or a set of guiding principles. It is crucial that Louis is a freelancer. He has taken the place of the corporation. This shouldn’t be surprising. After all, corporations are treated as individuals today. The Supreme Court said so. Why shouldn’t individuals turn into corporations as well? Corporations with no accountability beyond individualistic morality. No checks or balances. Louis essentially can do whatever he wants. Nina tries at times to rein him in. Rick raises tepid moral objections. Late in the story, law enforcement tries to intervene. None of these entities make a dent, and in Nightcrawler, there are no other regulators to be found.

Louis, as he says twice in the movie, is a very quick learner. He is disciplined and motivated. And he has a computer. He applies the lessons he learns through his online research. He takes business classes. He gathers facts and figures pertinent to his career. He speaks the language of entrepreneurship very well. He negotiates in a very straightforward and aggressive manner. He counsels Rick on ethics and cautions him not to sully his reputation in the business world. He is often refreshingly honest and direct. Until such time as it no longer benefits him. Then he commits various acts, usually hovering just around the threshold of criminal activity, without the slightest regard for anything beyond his own self-interest. That is the message of Nightcrawler. There have always been ambitious “go-getters” like Louis Bloom. But today they have more power at their disposal, and less regulation of their actions, than ever before. They have a reach that extends far beyond your local network news.

I didn’t think so much about Medium Cool or even Network while watching Louis Bloom at work. Those movies are more genuinely about media. I was reminded more of movies from that earlier era that featured very sharp outsiders who used modern technology to foster their careers: Lonesome Rhodes, the monstrous media personality played by Andy Griffith in A Face in the Crowd (1957) and J. Pierpont Finch, the ambitious young ladder-climber played both on stage and screen by Robert Morse in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (film version, 1967). Both are as unscrupulous as Louis Bloom, though they represent opposite ends of the personality spectrum. Lonesome is brutal and coarse, arguably more cruel than Louis. Finch (or Ponty, as he is called), is a pussycat. His role is primarily comic, and though he has the “bold brave spring of the tiger that quickens his walk,” he is ultimately a good guy. In the version of America that produced Lonesome and Ponty, a monster like Lonesome could be stopped and defeated, while an ambitious nice guy like Ponty could learn a couple of lessons and be rewarded. Louis Bloom is their 21st-century progeny: an evil bastard who, upon learning a few lessons, cannot be stopped.

And what of the poor abandoned Rick? Whereas Louis and Nina are members of the old school American immigrant class, classes which have long-established identities as Americans (and not as Jewish-Americans or Italian-Americans), Rick is the newer ethnically-diverse immigrant. I think the decision to give Rick minimal backstory was deliberate. Rick is essentially fodder. His employer sells him on the traditional American dream, but has no intention of allowing the dream to come true. When corporate self-interest is at stake, people like Rick have no standing. But Louis? If you listen closely, you can almost hear Louis singing “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.”

Nothing can keep the “Sisterhood” apart, clearly,

The ladies of “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” reunited on Saturday when Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel showed up to support their fellow “sister” America Ferrera at her new play, “Lips Together, Teeth Apart.” Tamblyn posted a photo to Instagram of herself with Lively and Bledel at the off-Broadway show with the caption, “Go America! Supporting our girl in her play, Lips Together, Teeth Apart. #sisterhood.” Ferrera then tweeted the photo, thanking her friends for showing up.

While we love seeing the ladies reunite in real life, we’re still hoping for an onscreen reunion. Last year, Ferrera told InTouch that all of them would love to work together again. “I think the four of us only ever think about how we can get back together and make people pay us to be with each other,” Ferrera said.

Draw Another Breath (It might be your last)

This novel contains scenes of graphic violence and is intended for adult reading. Jeff Bravis walked away from the minimum security federal prison camp on a visiting day, drove from the parking lot in a car he paid a guard to leave for him with the keys in the visor. He switched the car for a Jeep he stole in the casino parking lot in Lincoln City, Oregon and drove down the coast with one thought in mind. He had to find out where the key was to his deceased father’s safe, and an ex-CIA agent holed up in the jungle had a clue. This one-minded pursuit would lead Jeff to Central America with as diverse a group of thugs as had ever congregated for one mission. The techie genius who didn’t care who got blown up along the way, as long as he could feed his desire to play and win at Texas Hold Em. Two grizzled bikers down on their luck and between armed robberies. A fitness trainer/prostitute who fled Vegas after she accidentally killed a cop who came to arrest her ex-boyfriend. And finally Jeff’s high school buddy Eddie and his girlfriend, fresh from stealing high-end cars in Southern California. Follow them into the jungle of Guatemala, each in search of their own personal treasures, and all claiming to be there only to aid Jeff find his elusive key. Some of them will never return to the United States alive, but they’ll all do their part to make sure it’s the other guy who dies.

“Some Fun Tonight”: Not Just Another High End Boutique Coffee Table Book On The Beatles… This is a Monument!

I met a Beatle once.

It was an after-soundcheck meet ‘n’ greet for one of his All Stars shows at Radio City Music Hall, 1992. There were about 35 of us, waiting in the dead-center of the orchestra seats at Radio City, about 5:30 in the afternoon. If you’ve ever been there, you know the intersection. Mostly couples, I was by myself, standing off to one side. While everyone else was chit-chatting, I saw figure emerge from behind a draped curtain by the stage door.

And now, here was Ringo Starr, drummer of The Beatles, strolling towards the knot of people I was with, all by his lonesome. It was a 15 second dream-like moment. And I had it to myself. No one else noticed him until he was less than 25 feet away.

Ringo was very pleasant to one and all. His almost-cartoon-affable self.

Everyone was dazzled to the point of incoherence. Barely anyone said more than Hi. One woman did have the nerve to say, “Our son loves you on ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’… ”

Lots of chuckles, Ringo, too.

I was the last person to shake his hand.

As I did, I blurted, “The last time I saw you in the flesh, Ringo, was when my Dad took me to see you at Forest Hills on August 29th, 1964.”

Ringo pulled down his sunglasses, gave me a good stare, pushed ’em back up his nose and replied, utterly deadpan, “Nope, sorry. Don’t remember you.”

Pushing my luck, I ventured, “Well, will you allow me to be the 300th person today to tell you that you changed my life?”

“301, actually.” Ringo shot back… with a smile in his voice.

Okay, don’t worry, I’m not doing the horrendous babyboomer cliche memory lane stroll regarding 8:0whatever pm on February 9th, 1964. You’re welcome. Thank you.

Suffice it to say, I saw The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show that Sunday evening, fifty years ago, and was taking my first guitar lesson Wednesday, three days later.

So, you aware of this growing genre in book publishing, the over-priced, very limited edition, Boutique Coffee Table Rock Photo book, yes?

Big picture books aren’t new. But, these are not available in stores. They are ultra-deluxe, over a foot-wide, thick-as-a-brick books encased in their own protective candy-shell, put out with little or no fanfare. They are so pricey and there are so few printed that you have to be Into It to even know of their existence. I’ve seen a few. While they are a load of fun, and usually well done, they all are chocked with photos we’ve all seen at least two or three times before. Frankly, annoying for the money spent.

Well, we got a brand new one of these high-end-y no-ads word-of-mouth books here. It’s devoted exclusively and exhaustively to the three tours of America that The Beatles plowed through the Summers of 1964, 1965, 1966.

And since I just brought it up, regarding The Big Draw of any Beatles book, the photographs…

I am fairly devout. I own a lot of books on The Beatles. I have counted less than ten photos throughout both of the volumes I’m about to tell you about that I’ve ever seen before. This is a visual cornucopia without equal in my Beatle Fan experience. An absolute over-stuffed feast of virgin images.

The author, and not-to-be-dissuaded compiler of Some Fun Tonight!: The Backstage Story of How The Beatles Rocked America: The Historic Tours of 1964 – 1966, Volumes One & Two, is one Mr. Chuck Gunderson.

Mr. Gunderson has not come up with a Boutique Coffee Table Rock Photo book.

No.

He has created a monument.

This two volume book is only available at www.somefuntonight.com for $ 175.00. This is inexpensive, folks! This book will sell out! This book will be on eBay going for over $ 400 within the next 18 months. Guaranteed!

Full Disclosure: I was remunerated for this article with a copy of the book(s).

I love who wrote the Foreword for Volume One…

Bob Eubanks [WTF?!].

“This is the most complete factual material you will ever read about a band that changed the music in America forever. I believe this book will go down as the Bible of Beatles concert history.”

Well, yes, I exactly and precisely agree, Bob… Ummmm…

BOB EUBANKS? What?! Why?!

Okay, dig… more from Bob E’s Foreword…

“I was working at the number one rock station in LA. I wasn’t a very good disc jockey and knew I’d better do something to make myself more important… I was privileged to be one of only three promoters to produce a Beatles concert during each of the three years they toured America.”

Oh. Okay. Wow!

“Their wide-eyed innocence in 1964, the air of being amazed by all that was going on around them, was gone, replaced by a reserved attitude in 1965. And by 1966, they were a totally different group of guys: harder to please, a change in personalities, and, I believe, tired of their world.”

And Bob would know!

Volume Two begins with a Foreword by Barry Tashian, guitarist of Boston’s The Remains, ones of the support acts. His piece is highly personal with memories of The Beatles launching a sing-a-long of “Yellow Submarine” as their plane (Beatles and support acts all flew together) was taking off, hanging out in hotel rooms with the boys (“Don’t go new the windows, Barry!”), witnessing The Beatles awkwardly meeting The Beach Boys, both bands in mutual awe, even a night spent with Barry, David Crosby, Paul, and George stuffed into tiny Porsche careening around LA. Barry also lets us in on a secret; George was the friendliest and most thoughtful.

An author, and traveling reporter on Beatles tours, in Larry Kane’s Introduction in Volume Two, he reveals that John Lennon once smushed mashed potatoes and peas into his, Larry’s, hair. Paul was an unrepentant and crazed pillow-fighter, to the point of the pillows disintegrating. Both Paul and John, when they found out that Larry’s mother had recently died, sat down with him and went through their agonies with Larry regarding their own mothers’ early deaths (wow). The Beatles threatened to cancel a concert in Jacksonville, Florida when they found out that the audience might be segregated. It wasn’t. George, very afraid of flying, had a motto, “It’s Beatles and children first.”

The author, and not-to-be-dissuaded compiler of Some Fun Tonight!: The Backstage Story of How The Beatles Rocked America: The Historic Tours of 1964 – 1966, Volumes One & Two, Mr. Chuck Gunderson, explains his mission…

“My goal for these two books was to give the reader an all-inclusive ‘backstage’ story of how The Beatles rocked America during their historic tours of 1964, ’65 and ’66. I produced a factual account of every tour stop during those three amazing summers in the mid-1960s, from the moment The Beatles landed in America to the time they left. I recorded the goings on that occurred before the band ever set foot in each town, such as local promoters dueling for the rights to present them, ‘boss’ radio stations squaring off to sponsor shows, and fans lining up for tickets that would be snapped up in a matter of hours. I also wanted to give a nod to the fourteen supporting acts that shared the bill with the biggest band on the planet.

Of course, the book had to be filled with high-quality images of The Beatles onstage, backstage, at press conferences, in hotels, limousines and decoy vehicles, at airports, colorful concert memorabilia, legal documents, and the fans who followed them. Many images were unearthed from long-forgotten files and dusty archives. To achieve this vision, dozens and dozens of interviews had to be conducted, thousands of emails sent, hours upon hours of research and fact-checking in newspaper morgues, and tremendous expense incurred to license high-quality photographic images – let alone compiling the actual history!

The Beatles stood on North American soil for only a brief moment in their career – a grand total of just ninety days… Look carefully at the faces of the fans in these books; they may be your friends, parents, grandparents – or even you! – but together, they made Beatlemania happen.”

That is a Mission Statement!

Back to the photographs here…

More than half of the photos included, these books being exclusively about their touring, feature the band on stage, guitars strapped on, plugged in, drums being pounded, faces being made, sweat on brows.

I was hit hard by one very powerful impression as I wandered through these pages several times…

The Beatles were four guys (human beings) in a rock band.

Read that sentence again, please.

The Beatles were two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, all four could sing songs they’d written or covered.

These volumes bring this simple but profound truth home with a sledgehammer.

This was… a fuckin’ GOOD rock band.

Seeing just one fantastic stage photo after another of them with all their equipment… the amps, the cables, the back up guitars leaning haphazardly against the drum riser…in use… (a real treat for gear-heads)… Well, it really brings this extremely important factor to the fore in a way that packs a wallop!

As the years go by, The Beatles, for me, are becoming only more important, more monolithic.

It has become genuinely difficult to think of them as four really young guys (George turned 21 during their 1964 US tour… Ringo, the oldest, wasn’t going to be 24 ’til that July!), who played musical instruments, wrote songs, and sang ’em. The fact is, I never really saw The Beatles as ‘guitarists’ and ‘bassists’… that would happen in June of 1964 with The Rolling Stones for me, Keef being my first “guitar hero”.

No. The Beatles were The Beatles. A type of gods.

Sorry… More of… Back to the photos in these books…

There are a bare minimum of ten portraits of each Beatle sprinkled around these books (Vol. Two, especially) that you will simply want to cut out and have framed by a professional (maybe buy two copies?). Truly, some of the most gorgeous and revealing photographs of the individual Beatles I’ve ever seen in the past 50 years, and again, for the first time!, are in this book.

There are dozens and dozens of shots where the photographer clicked at the exact right moment. The guys’ personalities are in full view throughout.

I had intended on compiling a list of great shots. Well, actually, I did. I went through the books and jotted down the page numbers for about 50 photos per volume that I felt were ultra-special. But, now, I realize it’s pointless. There isn’t a dull page in this book.

One of the unexpectedly creepy things you see here… The JFK assassination had occurred only 77 days before The Beatles performed on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time, Feb. 9th, 1964. Lots of the backstage shots in this book are heavily reminiscent of the photos of Lee Harvey Oswald being, marched through the halls of that Dallas Police station to his death. The vibe in many about-to-hit-the-stage shots is inadvertently pretty goddamn spooky.

I must admit, I really love “noisy muffler” on page 76 of Vol. One. The Beatles wearing Stetsons on page 280 in One is a riot. It’s also really obvious on page 209 of Vol. Two that The Beatles showed up to at least one press conference ripped on marijuana.

The amount of specific-concert-related promotional flyers, ads, contracts, memos, gathered in these two volumes is just frickin’ nuts. How did Chuck find this stuff?! It’s mind-boggling, really. Oh, and the reproductions are superbly crystal-clear, every damn one of them. Crazy!

That reminds me… All the photos in this book are printed in a high-end intensity when it comes to sharpness of image. The paper used through every page of this set of books is the heaviest finest stock available that still feels like paper, as opposed to oaktag.

The spare-no-expense ethos is rampant… as befits the subject and the amount of loving work put into this exquisite presentation.

Lastly, the text… It really is hard to pull yourself away from the 450+ photos, but, when you finally do, a veritable textbook of facts, figures, and anecdotes awaits you. The text certainly isn’t dry, but, as a juxtaposition to all the lush visuals, it is very very straight. No fan-gushing whatsoever. Facts, facts, facts. Figures, figures, figures. History, history, history. Stones are just not left unturned anywhere. It’s almost overwhelming. My one and only complaint about these volumes… the photo captions are, for the most part, seriously bland… and given how many utterly incredible photos there are, it gets kinda funny how understated everything written-word is throughout.

Next week, I’ll rerun by experiences on August 29th, 1964, when I saw The Beatles live at Forest Hills Tennis stadium. Today, I’ll leave you with this little story…

Oh, but… BUY THIS BOOK, Beatle Fanatic. You will NEVER EVER regret it!

Pharrell’s hat’s off to Chuck Gunderson, whose hard work and time has achieved that rare rare state…

Definitive!

My daughter, Eleanor, now 23, was about to turn 5. For almost a year, I’d been playing her old songs by The Who on my acoustic guitar. The ‘kid stuff’, as it were… “Happy Jack”, “I’m A Boy”, “Boris The Spider”, “Maryanne With The Shaky Hands”…

Then one day, it hit me… It would be much more fun and much more educational for ME to just leave Ellie’s musical taste to her own devices. That was it. No more ‘indoctrinating’. But, first, I needed to do one more thing.

I walked into Ellie’s room while she was playing with her dolls and said, “Hey, Pup, I think you might like these guys. They’re called The Beatles.” I then dropped CDs of the first five albums on her bed and left the room… real low-key.

The next day, I got home from work to find Ellie sitting on the couch looking very grim.

“What’s the matter, sweetie?”

“You’re gonna be mad at me, Daddy.”

What?! No, I won’t! Why?”

Very chastened, she announced, “I like The Beatles better than The Who.”

Trying not to burst out laughing, I replied…

“Oh, Ellie! The Who are Daddy’s favorite band. The Beatles are THE BEST BAND.”

“Ohhhhhhh…”

Smiles… Storm passed.
