British Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane’s Personal Archive to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s New York

SHAUN’S SHOWCASE: The personal collection of British jewelry designer Shaun Leane is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York in December.
The designer said the collection represents “a level of creative freedom that has no parallel today and a time when jewelry, performance art and fashion fused as one. It has prompted questions in my own mind as to the important role the collection still has to play in conversations surrounding the relationship between these vital creative industries.”
He’s hoping the auction will address the questions he asked himself when making the jewels: “Is it art? Is it fashion? Is it jewelry?”
The sale is part of the auction house’s “A Life of Luxury” series, and will see 45 bespoke pieces thrust under the spotlight. Leane made the pieces for Alexander McQueen, his old friend and colleague of 17 years, for the latter’s shows and for Givenchy, and for clients such as Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Highlights include the coiled corset from McQueen’s The Overlook collection for fall 1999 to 2000 that took its cue from the film “The Shining.” It was created with 97 aluminum coils. There is also a silver crown of thorns

Crown Worn by Ariana Grande for ‘Dangerous Woman’ Publicity to Be Auctioned by Private Collector

CROWNING MOMENTS: Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert was an all-out charitable effort, but the private collector who has put the crown that she wore to promote her “Dangerous Woman” album up for auction has taken another route.
A spokesman for Nate D. Sanders Auctions said the item was consigned before the Manchester attack and the proceeds will not be donated to charity. The bidding is set to start Thursday at $ 5,000. Mary Collins of Vauje jewelry, who designed the headpiece with handset rhinestones near its spikes said she sold it last year. That private collector has since consigned it to the auction house, the spokesman said.
Collins did not respond immediately Monday to a request for comment.
Last month 22 people were killed and 119 were injured after a terrorist bomb exploded in Manchester Arena immediately after Grande’s “Dangerous Women” concert tour. After initially postponing the U.K. leg of her tour, the 23-year-old musician helped organize the One Love Manchester concert and returned to Manchester a few weeks later. Held in the city’s Old Trafford cricket ground, the concert featured Justin Bieber, Coldplay and Katy Perry. The event helped raise more than $ 12.7 million for the victims and their families, according to

Bobst Collection to Be Auctioned at Sotheby’s

Important pieces of art and jewelry that once belonged to the storied Bobst family — benefactors of health educational institutions including New York University’s Bobst Library — are to be auctioned at Sotheby’s this spring. The collection of Mamdouha and Elmer Holmes Bobst includes Impressionist works by Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and gem designs signed by Van Cleef & Arpels, and Donald Claflin for Tiffany & Co., among others.
Many of the collection’s artworks have low estimates within the multimillion-dollar-range.
Mamdouha Bobst, who passed away last year, had a singular taste for feminine, modern jewelry that is presently on display at the public preview of Sotheby’s spring Magnificent Jewels sale. Among the lots from her collection are pieces by Marianne Ostier, including a platinum and diamond tiara originally designed for a Hungarian lady. Elmer Bobst — a close acolyte of President Richard Nixon who advised the White House on health policy — gifted his wife the delicate crown to wear to a presidential dinner held in his honor.
Also included in the collection are rare pieces designed by Donald Claflin for Tiffany’s. These lots include the first use of tanzanite, which was discovered in 1968 by Masai tribesmen. Claflin, a young and gutsy designer, incorporated

Band of Outsiders’ Intellectual Property, Inventory To Be Auctioned

BAND OF BIDS: Band of Outsiders’ intellectual property rights and inventory are to be put up for auction. According to a public notice placed in today’s weekly print issue of WWD and the Wall Street Journal, the brand’s secured creditor, Belgian fashion fund CLCC SA will hold a public auction on July 29 at the offices of its legal representation, Otterbourg P.C.
News that Band of Outsiders had canceled its fall line and laid off staff first broke on May 26. The label has since closed its retail operations at 70 Wooster Street, following a liquidation sale. A source close to the situation told WWD that CLCC SA gained peaceful possession of Band of Outsiders’ assets after the label was unable to make payment on a credit line of more than $ 2 million. Despite the label’s liquidation efforts, the inventory to be auctioned still includes more than 5,000 units, the source said.
It is understood that Alan Cohen of Abacus Advisors Group — who is overseeing next week’s auction — is taking a wait-and-see approach when it comes to selling the brand’s intellectual property and inventory as a single asset or as separate entities. “They are going to take offers for both assets and individually…depending
