Australian Cult Brand Spell & The Gypsy Collective Lands in U.S.

Australian fashion labels, many of which are in the spotlight as Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, tours the antipodes, have long been popular in Southern California, where the climate and beach culture mirror the land of Oz.
Spell & The Gypsy Collective, the 10-year-old contemporary brand started by sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg, opened its first stand-alone retail space in the U.S., a pop-up at 1108 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Calif. Open through Nov. 25, the shop has attracted cult lovers of the brand, some of whom traveled from as far away as Florida and Canada just to shop.

“Because we’re slow fashion, we don’t make too many pieces so they tend to sell out very quickly,” said Pennefather, who started out in 2008 making jewelry that she sold at the open-air market in Byron Bay, Australia. When her sister, Lizzy, came on board a few years later, they expanded into clothing and e-commerce, and the business grew from there.

Montauk beachgoers will be able to pick up a swimsuit and sunglasses along with their lattes at Bluestone Lane’s new Beach Collective.
The Melbourne-inspired brand is rolling out East to set up a pop-up with seven Australian brands that debuts Saturday. The outpost at 786 Montauk Highway will keep pouring Aussie-style coffee and serving Down Under fashion until Oct. 8. While consumers’ coffee intake may vary from one day to the next, the Hamptons crowd will be able to find each of the seven labels whether they’re in need of artisanal-style caffeine or not.

A Decade of Aje, Australian Designer Duo Infusing Art Into Clothing

SYDNEY — The setting was a subtropical garden in Lavender Bay overlooking the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Marking its 10th birthday, contemporary Australian label Aje had all things Brett Whiteley on its mind.
In staging their latest runway show, design pair Edwina Robinson and Adrian Norris, who founded the brand, dove into the archives of one of Australia’s most recognizable artists. Working with the artist’s former wife, Wendy Whiteley, who oversees his estate, the brand worked to replicate every detail of five artworks onto clothes and showcased their resort 2019 lineup in Whiteley’s private garden on Wednesday.
“I had to go back and forth between Art Gallery of NSW and hold them against the prints, to make sure the colors are the same,” explained Robinson.
“They’re really iconic pieces, that people would have only ever seen in books or very rarely in the top galleries,” Norris added. “The paint strokes are exactly the same the way we printed. It is a direct replica of the piece.”
The brand, perhaps because of Norris’ other career as a painter, has kept the art world close. In a previous collection, the two used the work of another seminal Australian name, the Aboriginal artist Minnie Pwerle, adding her vividly colored brushstroke

Dion Lee Named the 2017 Australian Fashion Laureate

SYDNEY – Dion Lee has been named the Australian Fashion Laureate for 2017.
The New York-based Australian was presented with the award at a gala dinner for 300 at Sydney’s Barangaroo Cutaway venue on Thursday evening.
At 32, Lee is the youngest recipient of the Laureate, which is now in its 10th year and recognizes outstanding industry achievement.
Previous recipients include designers Akira Isogawa, Toni Maticevski and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia founder Simon Lock.
The Laureate is the latest in a string of accolades for Lee, who launched his business in 2008, after graduating from Sydney’s Fashion Design Studio and quickly garnering a following for his deconstructed tailoring and signature dresses with complex surface treatments.
The 2013 sale of a strategic stake in the business to the Sydney-based Cue Clothing Co. enabled the designer’s rapid retail expansion in Australia, where he operates eight stand-alone stores, in addition to e-commerce and concessions within the David Jones department store chain.
“[The Laureate] is a bit of a landmark moment for me — knowing that it is voted by your peers,” said Lee, who is now a New York Fashion Week runway regular and boasts over 70 global wholesale stockists.
“It has been a really surreal journey and not a journey

New Names, Resort-Focus Energize Australian Fashion Week

SYDNEY — New names, Liberty print swimwear and unisex surfwear were among the biggest buyer takeaways from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
Now in its 22nd year, the annual event pushed dates back several weeks to rebrand itself from a spring to resort showcase last year, resulting in a 75 percent increase in international buyer attendance over 2015, according to organizer IMG.
The company said it expects this year’s eight-day event, which concluded Sunday with a weekend of ticketed consumer presentations of the week’s highlights, to have drawn a cumulative attendance of 30,000.
Among them were a contingent of 33 international delegates, including 23 buyers — a number on par with 2016 — from New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Dubai. Airfares and accommodation were covered by the event.
More than 80 brands from Australia, New Zealand and China were showcased in 42 solo and group runway shows and a new IMG-operated “Designer Suites” showroom located at the event’s central hub for five years, Redfern’s Carriageworks.
Buyers praised the number of collections on offer, the event’s friendly vibe, good organization and the picturesque off-site locations that anchored the event in Sydney.

Coral Reefs – Australian Sites for Learning Environmental Education

Coral Reefs – Australian Sites for Learning Environmental Education

Coral reefs are critical for biodiversity, food habitats and as tourist destinations, but they are in serious decline around the world. Humans are a major cause of this problem. Here we explore high school students’ educational reef experiences with respect to specific learning outcomes. Students were surveyed and interviewed as they were trained in coral reef ecology and monitoring in both the classroom and at various sites in the Great Barrier Reef. The Three A’s of Coastal and Marine Studies (Marine Education Society of Australasia) are awareness, attitudes and action. This presupposes a learning situation where a gain in knowledge (awareness) will lead to a change in attitude, and thereby improve positive personal actions toward marine environments. This research analyses the link between the knowledge-attitude-action variables in relation to the effect of direct reef experience. This work addressed the question of proximal relations between humans and coral reefs. It brought together literature and techniques from varying disciplines to generate statistical findings, while student accounts confirmed the learning value of structured activities underwater as part of reef trips.

Nickelback Wanted By Australian Police For Crimes Against Music

Trashing Nickelback may be one of our great American pastimes, but this Australian police department just took hating the band to a whole new level.

The Queensland Police Service issued a tongue-in-cheek BOLO (Be On The Lookout) warning to locals via Facebook that the much maligned Canadian group would be bringing their crimes against music to the area. The faux wanted poster mocks the band for “impersonating musicians.”

Police are on the lookout for these men who are believed to be impersonating musicians around Boondall this…

Posted by Queensland Police Service on Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The quartet has been widely seen as a musical public enemy for decades. They were once deemed the second worst rock band of the ’90s in Rolling Stone.

Despite the disdain, Nickelback is still going strong and played in Brisbane, Australia on Wednesday.

Elitist haters, the New York Times mused, might be what gives Nickelback “a foundation on which to build an enduring fan base in the shrunken marketplace of the digital age,” despite being slammed for a commercial, formulaic sound and insincere lyrics.

Based on frontman Chad Kroeger’s reaction to an online petition to ban the band from the United Kingdom last fall, we’d guess he isn’t sweating the Queensland police.

“All these critics, they’re just tireless,” he told The Pulse of Radio in October. “They keep ragging on the band. If they had stopped writing all this stuff about us, there would be no controversy left in the band and we probably would have died out years ago. They don’t know that they’re still responsible for us being around today.”

Justin Bieber’s Graffiti Angers Australian Mayor

Justin Bieber won’t be mistaken for Banksy anytime soon, but he’s getting a bit more attention for his graffiti down in Australia with a Mayor condemning him and a hotel saying it was fine.

TMZ reports Bieber sprayed graffiti all over a hotel in Gold Coast, Australia last week while on his Believe world tour. The graffiti caught the attention of the city’s mayor Tom Tate who posted an exclusive video to TMZ.

“Hi TMZ, Mayor Tom Tate here from Australia’s Gold Coast,” Tate said. “You know I got a message here for pop princess Justin Beaver. We love your music but we hate your graffiti and your vandalism here in our city.”

The Gold Coast Bulletin had more information on the incident, with photographs proving Bieber was doing the deed at the QT Hotel.

However, the hotel didn’t seem to agree with Tate’s stance as it is actually running a graffiti art competition and said they gave Bieber permission to spray graffiti on its wall, a move the Gold Coast Bulletin described as a “one-fingered salute” to Tate.

“You could be painting your art on one of our walls with permission if you are the winner,” a hotel representative wrote on the QT Facebook page on Dec. 2. “All you need to do is post a sketch of your potential design here on our page to be in the running. The sketch should come with a brief description of why you believe it suits the Gold Coast.”

The hotel’s Facebook page also included a posted photo of “Anchorman” Ron Burgundy (played by Will Ferrell) with the caption “Stay Classy Tom Tate” on it. “We know that the Mayor assumed that it was done illegally and used it to make a point, and is now needing to stick to that position even though it’s not really fair,” the hotel rep added in the comments section. However, the hotel now has covered the graffiti by placing a tarp over it.

Tate told the publication his office received several messages from people who “agree graffiti has no place” in the area and “it is an eyesore and it has to go.”

As for Tate’s video he goes on to say Bieber has “two choices”: “come back and clean up your mess or come back and sing at the Mayor’s Christmas Carol” which takes place Dec. 7 in the Gold Coast. “Make me a believer everyone,” Tate says to conclude the 42-second video.

The singer — who reportedly showed up 70 minutes late for a Melbourne gig Monday night — will not be performing that day but is performing in Perth on Dec. 8 to wrap up the extensive trek that commenced in September, 2012.
