‘Waste No More’ Environmental Project to Debut in the U.S. at Park Avenue Armory

IT ALL ADDS UP: As part of the fashion industry’s ongoing crusade to make sustainability a more palatable subject, the art installation “Waste No More” will be staged at the Park Avenue Armory starting Thursday.
On view through Nov. 12, the environmentally oriented project will be set up in conjunction with The Salon Art + Design. Curated by Li Edelkoort, the show is meant to raise awareness about the mammoth amount of textile waste that consumers contribute to annually and to also show visitors the upsides of the circular economy.
An estimated $ 500 billion worth of clothing that is barely worn and rarely recycled is lost annually. More simply put, the average U.S. citizen throws away 70 pounds of clothing each year. Without any improvement, the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget by 2050, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
With a name that seems to riff on the theatrical immersion experience, “Sleep No More,” Waste No More will be set up in the reception rooms of the Upper East Side Armory. It is presented by DesignWork, which is part of Renew, an initiative that turns previously owned Eileen Fisher clothing into felted material for fashion, home

Outerwear Brand Bacon Creates Capsule for Saks Fifth Avenue

Customers into cozy, fashionable puffer jackets have yet another option to choose from.
Italian contemporary outerwear brand Bacon — which already lists Gigi Hadid among its fans — has unveiled a small capsule collection with luxury department store Saks Fifth Avenue.
The brand’s signature women’s “Puffa” style jacket was reinterpreted in two exclusive colorways: red and blue. The cropped jacket, retailing at $ 615, boasts an exaggerated collar and a tie detail.
Additional styles and dedicated colorways will be added to the capsule early next year, strengthening the tie-up with the U.S. department store.

“We want to shift the customers’ perspective on down jackets and we are really focused on trying to evolve the silhouettes. After a few seasons of oversized shapes, we’re gently shifting toward more refined styles, without giving up our rock soul,” said founder and ceo Andrea Pilato Barrara.
The brand delivers fall duvet coats for women featuring oversized proportions and in a number of bright colors informed by the Nineties aesthetic. Established in 2008 as a sportswear label, Bacon will launch its first summer season in 2020 with a selection of windbreakers. Starting with the current fall season, it also introduced two men’s

Dolls Kill Arrives on Fairfax Avenue With Concept Shop

WELCOME TO FAIRFAX: Dolls Kill founders and husband-and-wife team Shaudi Lynn and Bobby Farahi saw a nice-looking space on Fairfax Avenue and went for it. The two on Saturday celebrate the grand opening of the company’s second store outside of their hometown of San Francisco, where they opened their first store in the Haight District a year ago.
The Los Angeles location, at 415 North Fairfax Avenue, is designed with an industrial nightclub in mind. To that end, the company imported a sound system from Italian custom audio equipment manufacturer Pequod Acoustics and played up the store’s gritty brick walls.
“Unlike the many retail stores that pop up all over L.A. in locations that over and over serve as some sort of clothing venue, our location on Fairfax had never been a storefront before,” said Shaudi Lynn in reference to the space’s past life as a mattress seller.
The store well exceeds the size of the company’s foray into retail with Fairfax totaling 6,000 square feet and dubbed a concept shop. San Francisco totals 1,100 square feet at 1475 Haight Street.
The Fairfax store’s assortment will include limited drops from the company’s proprietary labels Club Exx, Current Mood, Poster Girl, Widow and Sugar Thrillz

Madison Avenue Says ‘Let’s Dance,’ Ballet-style

There will be dancing in the streets and tutus in the windows on Madison Avenue in September.
“American Ballet Theatre on Madison Avenue” will be presented by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District and the classical ballet company from Sept. 20 to 27, to benefit the American Ballet Theater’s Costume Fund and spur shopper traffic on the city’s most luxurious shopping avenue.
Retailers up and down the street will fill their windows and set up in-store exhibits with ballet costumes and memorabilia from ABT’s  archive covering ABT’s 78-year history of performing in New York. Costumes from classic ballets like “Swan Lake” as well as those from new works will be displayed.
“This really is a way to engage the neighborhood and a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with one of the nation’s great cultural institutions,” Matthew Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue BID, told WWD.

Gabriela Artigas & Company Opens First Retail Store on Melrose Avenue

Gabriela Artigas & Company, the 10-year-old Los Angeles-based jewelry brand that wholesales in more than 70 brick-and-mortar stores globally, has opened its first retail store at 7970 Melrose Avenue, a stone’s throw from Reformation, G-Star, Adidas Originals, Revolve showroom, Fred Segal and Jonathan Adler.
Influenced by their roots in Mexico City, sisters Gabriela and Tere Artigas, who serve and designer and director of sales, respectively, founded the line, which ranges from delicately minimalist earrings to bold architectural necklaces and bracelets, in 2008. The company formerly occupied a studio and private showroom space nearby, but when water damage forced them to move, they found the Melrose space and decided to try retail.

“We’ve learned so much about our customer over the last decade that we felt confident enough to present our own space,” said the designer.
The 850-square-foot store is a design collaboration between the Artigas sisters and their friends Tatum Kendrik of Studio Hus; Hillary Taymour of contemporary apparel line Collina Strada; and their brother, Alex Artigas of Artless Corporation, who custom designed the mid-century modern and minimalist-style furniture.
Decorative elements and hardware in the store reference the jewelry itself, from the metals

Jack Erwin to Open Store on Madison Avenue

Jack Erwin, a men’s online footwear brand, will open its first full-service brick-and-mortar store in Manhattan this summer.
The flagship will be located at 488 Madison Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets, and will carry the brand’s full line of European-made, handcrafted shoes as well as some exclusives.
“Over the past three years, the Tribeca showroom has shown us that many of our customers not only want to try on our shoes for fit and comfort, but also really enjoy seeing the quality of our materials and craftsmanship while engaging with our team in-person,” said co-founder Lane Gerson. “As Jack Erwin grows, it’s important for us to continue nurturing these customers by improving and expanding our retail experience, and with so many new products launching this year, we think now is the perfect time to introduce Jack Erwin Madison.”
Jack Erwin launched in 2013 and sells primarily online, although it is also carried in Nordstrom.

Ralph & Russo, Choice of Royalty, Celebs, Coming to Madison Avenue

British couture house Ralph & Russo has signed a lease with Thor Equities to open a 5,800-square-foot flagship at 680 Madison Avenue. The building, between 61st and 62nd Streets, is also home to Tom Ford’s 12,300-square-foot flagship and a 7,000-square-foot Brioni unit.
Ralph & Russo operates a maison in London’s tony Mayfair district, while a main boutique at Harrods — one of three in the store — sells couture, shoes and leather goods. There’s also an atelier in Paris, which, like the London maison sees clients “strictly by appointment.”
Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, the Australian couple who are partners in business and life, have grown their small couture atelier, which was founded in 2007, into a force that caters to international celebrities, billionaires and royalty on several continents.
They know that couture, while dependent on skilled artisans steeped in tradition, must be accessible to clients, who want the exclusivity and craftsmanship inherent in couture, but also want it to fit into their lifestyle.
Ralph & Russo launched ready-to-wear in September during London Fashion Week, to make their aesthetic available to customers who can’t afford couture, as well as to further expand their reach.
There’s been whispers that Meghan Markle could tap Ralph & Russo

Lutwyche Opens Bespoke Shop on Madison Avenue

The British invasion into New York City continues.
Following in the footsteps of Huntsman and Thom Sweeney, two U.K. tailors that recently set up shop in the city, Lutwyche has also entered the fray.
The London-based bespoke maker has opened an appointment-only shop at 717 Madison Avenue, where it will create custom clothing for customers from an upscale location on the third floor.
The brand was founded by Tony Lutwyche in 2000 and currently offers bespoke and made-to-measure clothing as well as a small ready-to-wear collection. The ready-to-wear is carried at several Saks Fifth Avenue stores and Lutwyche also hosts trunk shows at the Saks stores twice a year.
His new 3,000-square-foot shop will not carry the ready-to-wear but will focus exclusively on custom and made-to-measure clothing.
Before starting his business, Lutwyche attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was a major in the cavalry. It was there that he got his first taste for sartorial dressing when he had to buy his officer’s uniforms from Savile Row tailors. “They were reassuringly expensive,” he said, “but the experience was disappointing and the product was great, but musty.”
Once his military service ended — and a short stint in the banking world proved not to his

De Grisogono Marks Madison Avenue Flagship

De Grisogono is raising the curtain on its partnership with DLK founders and former Leviev executives Lisa and David Klein.
The two entities look to match De Grisogono’s flair for color and unconventional designs with the Klein’s expertise in important gemstones, which they honed at Leviev. As such, the two parties have worked together on new designs to be sold internationally. Additionally, the Kleins have spearheaded a new De Grisogono store at 700 Madison Avenue from which they will direct the jeweler’s U.S. business. The boutique officially opened its doors on Monday.
David is to fulfill the role of De Grisogono’s U.S. chief executive officer, and Lisa its president. De Grisogono’s international operations will continue to be run out of Geneva, Switzerland.
In February WWD announced the partnership, which has seen the Kleins’ Leviev business cease operations in order to focus on De Grisogono’s U.S. business development. They have also been hard at work to lend their expertise in stones to De Grisogono creative director Fawaz Gruosi’s designs, which have been known to skew brash and over the top, often through a use of semiprecious stones instead of remarkable gems.
“Boldness, vibrancy and modernity are a part of the De Grisogono DNA but as you

The Tie Bar to Make Madison Avenue Store Permanent

The Tie Bar is putting down permanent stakes in New York.
The Chicago-based men’s accessories brand opened a pop-up shop at 400 Madison Avenue in May that was originally expected to be open for only six months. But the success of the location, which is between 47th and 48th Streets, prompted the brand to make it the company’s first permanent store in the city.
“New York continues to be a rapidly growing market for us, so to maintain a permanent store presence here was a must,” said Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer of The Tie Bar. “Our now family of stores has proven extremely effective for the brand, exposing us to a new regional clientele.”
The brand, which offers neckwear, dress shirts, socks, pocket square, ties bars and other accessories, also has a store in Chicago and recently opened a unit in Boston. Both of those locations also got their start as pop-ups.
According to the company, the brand expects to expand to several other “key markets” in 2018. Specific cities were not disclosed, but a spokesman said The Tie Bar is looking at the East and West Coasts as well as in parts of the South.
The Madison Avenue location was the company’s third

British Online Retailer Avenue 32 Shuts Operations

DEAD END: British online retailer Avenue 32, which sold contemporary women’s wear, has shut down, the company said Wednesday.
The business posted a message on its web site: “Goodbye…After 6 wonderful years, we have decided to focus on new projects and so, sadly, Avenue32.com is now closed. Thank you for being such loyal customers. Orders placed before 11th August 2017 will be processed as normal and the returns period remains at 15 days from receiving your order.”
Launched in 2011 by chief executive officer Roberta Benteler, who had spent her career in private equity, Avenue 32 was backed by Germany’s Benteler Group, which makes steel tubes, components and systems for the auto industry.
Sources said the closure came down to financing as the company struggled to generate sales. Financials experts say it’s difficult for small online retailers to secure funding and financing nowadays: Not only do they have to show they are profitable, they are also facing competition from all directions. They have to compete with the big online luxury players such as Net-a-porter.com, Moda Operandi, Stylebop.com, Mytheresa.com Farfetch and Matchesonline.com, stand-alone brand sites and Instagram sellers.
One industry source speculated that the company’s failure also came down to customer acquisition, which is expensive.

Obey Takes Up Melrose Avenue Space for Pop-Up

PUNK INSPIRED: Streetwear-inspired clothing brand Obey has taken up residence on Melrose Avenue for a month-long pop-up.
The brand on Thursday evening is expected to celebrate its first foray into stand-alone brick-and-mortar in the city along with the launch of its Debbie Harry x Obey women’s collection, with artist Shepard Fairey on hand to DJ the private launch event.
The concept shop, at 7400 Melrose Avenue, totals 1,000 square feet and will have in stock pieces from the collaboration with Harry in addition to other items from the fall collection for men and women. A collection of zines will be available from various artists and publishers, including Never Press, Studio Number One and Animals Mag. Additional events are also planned for the space.
The company’s collaboration with Harry was first disclosed last year.
“I’ve been a Blondie fan my whole life and have collaborated with them in the past, which has been a dream come true. But working with Debbie on this project has been totally inspiring,” Fairey told WWD at the time of the collaboration’s announcement. “She’s been very involved and hands-on for the whole process, just another display of her incredible talent.”

Nordstrom Staffers to Join Sunday’s Pride March on Fifth Avenue in New York

Nordstrom employees will be out in force at Sunday’s NYC Pride March in New York.
More than 200 staffers have signed up to march down Fifth Avenue, which is considerably more than last year’s turnout of 80. Supporters will be wearing Nordstrom Pride T-shirts that are also available on the company’s site and at select retail locations. Online shoppers can learn how net sales from the $ 24 T-shirt will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The short-sleeve black tops are imprinted with emojis that spell out “Love and peace to you.”
Organized by the nonprofit Heritage of Pride, this week’s Pride events are expected to attract more than two million people and will follow the theme “We Are Proud.” The event was started to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, which started the modern LGBT movement. This year’s march will step off at noon with the help of grand marshals New York firefighter Brooke Guinan, Gay Men’s Health Crisis activist Krishna Stone and Chinese LGBT activist Geng Le.
Nordstrom, as well as Gap, are among the bronze sponsors of this year’s walk down Fifth Avenue, and has done so since 2015. Other apparel companies are also supporting Sunday’s event. Macy’s is

Tie Bar Opens Madison Avenue Pop-up

NEW YORK — The Tie Bar has entered the men’s wear fray on Madison Avenue — at least for the next six months.
The Chicago-based men’s furnishings brand has taken a temporary space at 400 Madison Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets for a pop-up shop to showcase its new dress shirt collection in addition to its assortment of neckwear, socks, pocket squares, tie bars and other accessories.
Allyson Lewis, chief executive officer, was in town to put the finishing touches on the shop, which will have its official opening on Thursday.
“This is a very different location for us,” she said. “It’s more of a work destination, but we are a workwear brand at heart.”
This marks the third pop-up the Tie Bar has had in New York. Its other two were in SoHo and Greenwich Village. It has also had pop-ups in Boston and Washington, D.C.
The brand launched dress shirts last October and released its second collection in early April. “In October, we focused on core wardrobe staples but now we have more seasonal fashion — light spring colors and fabrics,” she said. “And they’re performing very well.”

Dress shirts are a new addition for Tie Bar.

She said there are no plans to offer sport shirts

Brioni Opens New York Flagship on Madison Avenue

NEW YORK — Brioni is taking its luxury Italian aesthetic to Madison Avenue here with the opening of a two-level, 5,974-square-foot flagship on 62nd Street.
The store is the second iteration of a David Chipperfield Architects Milan design that launched in Paris in July on Rue Saint-Honoré. But Gianluca Flore, chief executive officer of the Kering-owned Brioni, said the layout of the New York store allows for a fuller expression of the design.
“It’s even nicer than Paris,” he said. “That fact that it is two full floors allows for the concept to express itself in a better way.” The Paris store is also on two levels, but one is below ground.
The New York store, which opens Thursday, replaces a smaller unit on 57th Street that closed on Sunday. The flagship was intended to open in late October, but construction delays, due in part to the fact that the location is a residential building, pushed back the opening date.
The opening of the store comes as Brioni is in the midst of another reboot after a tumultuous 10 months. It parted ways with its then-creative director Brendan Mullane, tapped Justin O’Shea as his successor, and then pushed O’Shea out after six months following pushback from

North Sails NYC to Open on Fifth Avenue With Sailing-Inspired Apparel

STRONG GUSTS AHEAD: The political climate being what it is, more than a few New Yorkers wish they could just sail away to another land. With next week’s opening of a North Sails store, they will have an outpost to buy sailing gear should they actually follow through on that whim.
The 2,100-square-foot North Sails NYC store will start greeting shoppers Wednesday at 108 Fifth Avenue. The location will be the company’s third in the U.S., since Newport, R.I., and Annapolis, Md., locations opened in recent months. North Sails NYC is an offshoot of North Sails, which was started in San Diego in 1957 by Olympic gold medalist sailor Lowell North. With distribution in 29 countries, the company designs, engineers and manufactures sails for racing and cruising sailboats from 8 feet to 200 feet.
Sailors or boat owners in search of North Sails’ actual sails will have to shop elsewhere. But in line with its nautical heritage, the new boutique will have a beverage bar with a curated international selection of water for shoppers to choose from. North Sails has also partnered with Nespresso to offer espresso and other coffee drinks for consumers to purchase.

The Fashion and Accessories That Everyone Will Be Wearing (Or Want To!), As Predicted By Avenue 32’s Fashion Phenom, Roberta Benteler

Do you remember those beyond-cute macramé-detailed bikinis that just about every chic girl seemed to be flooding your Instagram with last summer? How about those candy-colored faux-fur coats that are equal parts adorable and cool, seen on the likes of Alexa Chung and a ton street style stars?

Those are just two of the many gems that you can thank Roberta Benteler for. No, she’s not the designer for swimwear line, Kinii, or outerwear brand, Shrimps, which we’re referencing above—but she is the one who put both of those brands on the map—or rather, the geotag.

Allow us to explain. The German-born, London-based Benteler has long been obsessed with fashion, but what’s more is that she has a gift that we like to call “the scent.” Benteler can sniff out the next It Bag, It Brand, and even It Girl, before designers and fashion folk get plugged in. Luckily for every style-savvy woman out there, the 30-year-old is putting her powers of fashion fortune-telling to good use, with her e-commerce site, Avenue 32.

ave-32-roberta-benteler
Roberta Benteler

Benteler travels the globe to discover new design talents, but she’s also always scouring Instagram for new brands to bring to her site. It’s rife with colorful, unique, and of-the-moment finds from the likes of Vika Gazinskaya, Cédric Charlier, and Galvin (and not to worry if those names aren’t familiar to you yet; give it some time and you can bet your feed will be flooded with them soon). She discovered Kinii when she saw it on Instagram, and acted fast, becoming their first-ever retailer. “When we met Ipek [Irgit], she was the designer in a little showroom in New York City, she had just started making them and none of us had any idea of how big the brand would get in such a short space of time,” Benteler told Glamour. “The designs are incredibly visually striking and caught my eye immediately.”

A photo posted by Bar Refaeli (@barrefaeli) on

Bar Refaeli in her Kinii bikini. The style has also been worn by fashion trendsetters Leandra Medine, Dree Hemingway, Hannah Bronfman, and Cara Delevingne.

Shrimps, too, was a fascinating find, and shows just how much a great retailer can influence designers themselves. “In Shrimps’ case, Hannah [Weiland] walked into the Avenue 32 office wearing her first-ever shrimps coat,” Benteler recounted. “She was an intern at another designer and dropped something off—we saw her coat and instantly ordered 50 of them!”

shrimps-coats-marta-pozzan-alexa-chung-kate-foley
Marta Pozzan, Alexa Chung, and Kate Foley wearing Shrimps coats.

How did she hone her eye, or yes, “the scent”? Some of it is inherent, but what makes Benteler able to turn her fashion obsession into something you can actually buy is that, in addition to going to fashion school, she also began her career in the staid, suited world of finance. “Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to start my own business,” said Benteler. “Coming from a family of entrepreneurs and fashion being my first love, it was naturally what I gravitated toward. Although I did go through phases where I wanted to become a fashion designer and have my own label. Who knows, maybe as a next project!”

Today, with Avenue 32, she’s aiming to take the rush of excitement she gets when she finds new talents to shoppers across the globe. “[I want] to bring back the element of discovery to shopping,” she said. “I feel like a treasure hunter when I am looking for new brands for the site and that is how I would like our clients to feel when they discover the brands on Avenue 32.”

That said, we asked Benteler to make some fashion predictions for the upcoming spring season and she opened up her top-secret photo album to us (some pieces are so new, they haven’t even been professionally photographed yet!). Get your thumbs ready to like:

Manolo Blahnik Books First-ever Personal Appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue

SHOE IN: Manolo Blahnik will make his first-ever personal appearance at a Saks Fifth Avenue store next month. On Sept. 10 the stiletto-maker will appear within his Saks shop-in-shop boutique — located on the retailer’s “10022” shoe floor — for a signing.
From 5 to 7 p.m., shoppers who purchase a new pair of Blahniks can have their shoes signed by the footwear impresario.
Blahnik’s Saks shop-in-shop — his first-ever permanent retail fixture at a Saks store — opened within the retailer’s Manhattan flagship location earlier this month.
“New York is a very important city for me, so seeing this shop coming to life means a lot…It is very exciting to meet new faces and see the usual customers again. I really enjoy communicating with them; it’s always great to hear their experiences and feedback in first person,” Blahnik said of the event.

American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Saks Fifth Avenue Dedicates Windows to Fern Mallis

SAKS CELEBRATES MALLIS: Saks Fifth Avenue is putting Fern Mallis in the spotlight by dedicating 16 of its streetfront windows — including all of the Fifth Avenue ones — to her new book “Fashion Icons.” Drawing from her “Fashion Icons” conversations at 92Y with the likes of Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs, the Rizzoli-published tome will be stacked up in the displays with select mannequins adorned in designer attire from each of her respective subjects.
Expected at Monday’s book signing and party are Klein, von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Norma Kamali, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, André Leon Talley, Betsey Johnson, Simon Doonan and Bill Cunningham. The event will be the first one to be hosted by Saks’ new president Marc Metrick.
As for how she reeled in so many people to the Upper East Side Y, Mallis said, “I don’t want to pat myself on the back, but I did a lot of research. Most people don’t get to know a designer in that way or hear them talk about their lives. There was a warmth and comfort in each of the conversations that made people feel safe in talking to me.”

Lincoln Avenue: Chicago Stories

Lincoln Avenue: Chicago Stories

With its twelve sharply observed stories filled with memorable characters and dialogue imbued with the pop music of the day, Gregg Shapiro reflects on what it meant to grow up gay in Chicago during the 1970s and 1980s. Relationships -family, boyfriends, and otherwise-are explored in stories such as “Lunch with a Porn Star,” “Marilyn, My Mother, Myself,” and “Your Father’s Car.” Only a gay Chicago native with a keen eye could give us such an insider’s view of the Windy City from a more innocent time not too long ago.”The men of Lincoln Avenue are in search of something, but don’t worry, they’ll find it before morning. In these unflinching and deeply located stories, Gregg Shapiro inhabits the cars, bars, and avenues of the gay metropolis that came of age in 1980s Chicago. This is fiction that embodies and pays homage to a world as fleeting as youth but as indelible as the city streets themselves.” – Barrie Jean Borich, author of Body Geographic”Gregg Shapiro creates whole worlds with these stories, in which characters navigate everything from first lust to familial dramas, in narratives told with humor, understanding, and a keen sense of place. Stories such as ‘Lincoln Avenue’ pose the meaningful, unanswerable question: Why do we love the people we love? This is a memorable and entertaining collection.” – Kelly Dwyer, author of Self-Portrait with Ghosts and The Tracks of Angels”I love these great Chicago stories, so fresh and sharp, so excitable and hard-edged and tenderhearted. These stories remind once again why I’ve been a fan of Shapiro’s work for years.” – Richard McCann, author of Mother of Sorrows”A nostalgic ride through the streets of Chicago that starts in a 1975 Hornet and ends in a 1980 Cutlass wagon, the stories in Lincoln Avenue are like a stack of faded Polaroids from our collective gay past-each capturing the hopeful novelty and awkward uncertainty of youth in a single frame.” – Wayne Hoffman, author of Sweet Like Sugar and Hard”These lovely stories f
