Julia Louis-Dreyfus Documents ‘Jolly Transfusion’ Amid Cancer Treatment: ‘My Awesome Xmas Cocktail’

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has remained relentlessly positive as she battles breast cancer.

On Friday, the Veep star took to Instagram to make light of a blood transfusion she underwent as part of her cancer treatment.

“Getting ready for the holidays with my awesome Xmas cocktail #jollytransfusion #ivebeengood,” she captioned a photo of a medical blood bag attached to an IV pole.

Last month, the actress went in for her third round of chemotherapy since revealing she was diagnosed with breast cancer on Sept. 28.

“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one,” she wrote on social media at the time. “The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring friends, and fantastic insurance through my union.”

Continued Louis-Dreyfus, 56, “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

The announcement came just days after Louis-Dreyfus won her sixth consecutive outstanding lead actress Emmy for her role as Selina Meyer on Veep, setting the record for most wins for a performance in the same role for the same series.

HBO told PEOPLE that Louis-Dreyfus learned of her diagnosis one day after the Sept. 17 award show, noting that “it in no way impacted the decision to make this the final season” and that the production schedule will be adjusted as needed.

“Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time,” said the network in statement. “We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep.”

Kami Phillips, E-Commerce Editor: These mules are everything for fall. I’m absolutely obsessed with the gorgeous burgundy hue, luxe velvet and floral embroidery – three of the prettiest trends of the season. I’m stealing a styling trick from supermodel Gigi Hadid and rocking them with my favorite pair of cropped vintage denim and a cozy, matching turtleneck.

Buy It! Sam Edelman Aven Mules, $ 96 (orig. $ 120); shopbop.com

Sarah Ball, Fashion Market Editor: I’ve been looking for the perfect everyday fall bag, but one that’s not too boring. This mini camera cross body is perfect! The brown and black color combo make it extremely versatile (I’m not one to be weird about mixing brown and black) and the pony hair and print make it standout, so it feels special.

Buy It! Derek Lam 10 Crosby Mini Spring Camera Bag, $ $ 396 (orig. $ 495); shopbop.com

Colleen Kratofil, Style Writer-Reporter: Every fall I restock my closet with a new pair of black booties. I chose the same heel height from the same brand in the same plain shade but this year, I finally decided to change it up. I didn’t think I needed a pair of embroidered booties, but this ornate jacquard design by Sam Edelman is just as versatile as a standard black boot, they just look lightyears cooler.

Buy It! Sam Edelman “Taye” boots, $ 160; shopbop.com

Kaitlyn Frey, Style & Beauty Assistant: I’ve been dying to get my hands on a pair of over-the-knee boots for over a year now, but have held back on making the splurge since most styles I loved tend to be on the pricey side. But now with Shopbop’s sale I’m finally pulling the trigger and investing in this Sigerson Morrison pair.
Buy It! Sigerson Morrison Karissa Thigh High Boots, $ 521.25 (orig. $ 695); shopbop.com

Alex Apatoff, Deputy Style Director: I hate all my earrings. I need new ones. These ones are cute and in my budget.
Buy It! Cloverpost “Weld” earrings, $ 72.75 (orig. $ 97); shopbop.com

Andrea Lavinthal, Style & Beauty Director: For a person who covers trends for a living, I was embarrassingly late to the mules party. But I finally made it here and now I can’t get enough of backless slides — they just make every outfit look instantly cooler. I like the preppy vibe of this menswear-inspired loafer style, plus the navy hue feels so on-point for fall.

Buy It! Splendid Delory Mules, $ 86.40 (orig. $ 108); shopbop.com

Working Mom Makes Awesome Edits To Daughter’s Sexist Homework

After noticing a problematic narrative in her 6-year-old daughter’s homework, one working mom decided to fix it.

On May 23, Lynne Polvino posted side-by-side photos of her daughter Hazel’s fill-in-the-blank homework assignment, titled “Back to Work,” next to her edited version of the worksheet on Facebook

“Back to Work” prompts students to choose words from lists of three to fill in a story about a little girl named Lisa.

“Lisa was not happy. Her mother was back at work,” the story begins. The narrative explains the the little girl had a terrible morning at home and day at school because her mom went back to work after staying at home with her.

“Lisa had to get to school on time. Her father had to get to work on time. And now, her mother was in a rush, too,” the narrative reads.

Due to the change in routine, Lisa’s dad had to make breakfast, which was “not too good.” At the end of the story, however, Lisa “feels fine” because her mom’s job allows her to leave early and greet her at home after school.

Polvino lives in Queens, New York and works at publishing house in Manhattan. As a working mom, she was struck by the story in the homework assignment.

“It just pushed so many buttons for me, and with each sentence it managed to get worse!” Polvino told Today. “My shock and dismay quickly turned to outrage. I mean, what decade are we in, anyway? In this day and age, we’re going to tell kids that mothers working outside the home makes their children and families unhappy? That fathers don’t normally do things like cook and wash the dishes?”

Upset by the messages in the story, Polvino decided to rewrite it to more accurately reflect the kind of life she wants for her children. In the updated version, Lisa’s mother returns to work after “nearly a year of paid maternity leave” and the little girl feels happy.

“The morning was wonderful,” Polvino wrote. “Lisa had to get to school on time. Her mother had to get to work on time. Her father was home on his paid paternity leave, caring for Lisa’s younger brother and contributing equally to the running of the household. No one was in a rush because Dad had things firmly under control.”

After Lisa’s dad cooked a “very good” breakfast, she helped wash the dishes and went to school, where she “enjoyed the play-based learning and small student-to-teacher ratio in her state-of-the-art public school classroom.” After spending the afternoon at a “free federally-funded after school enrichment program” that offers Lego robotics and painting, Lisa returned home feeling good about all of her opportunities in life and quality time with her family.

Polvino’s Facebook post has been shared nearly 1,300 times and received more than 2,600 likes. At the request of friends, she made the post public, and it received more attention when Today contributor Alison Slater Tate wrote about it for the site.

In a follow-up comment on her Facebook post, Polvino clarified that her rewrite was meant as social commentary and not as a criticism of Hazel’s teacher or school.

“As we all know, NYC public schools face many challenges, including lack of adequate funding for up-to-date classroom materials, and I admire and appreciate all the good work the teachers and administrators do,” she wrote.

Though the mom did not send the the updated assignment to school with Hazel, she did email her teacher to share her concerns about the material.

On May 28, Polvino shared an update after hearing back from her daughter’s teacher. She said the teacher thanked her for bringing the issue to her attention, expressed her agreement and promised to review future worksheets more carefully before sending them home.

“She also apologized for the oversight and confirmed that it must have come from an out-of-date workbook,” wrote Polvino, adding that she believes public schools need more adequate funding for newer materials and smaller class sizes so that teachers can focus on educating children rather than “weeding out offensive decades-old worksheets.”

She concluded her update with a a shoutout to the working mothers who came before her.

Wrote Polvino, “A huge thank you and much respect to all the working moms of past generations who had to deal with this type of crap on a regular basis!”

Facebook Users Have Awesome Responses To Little Boy’s Makeup Tutorial

A viral video is helping to pose a parenting question to social media users.

On May 13, the Facebook page VibeswithBae posted a video of a young boy doing a makeup tutorial. “You walk in to your son doing this, wyd?” the caption asks.

The video has been viewed over 15 million times.

Commenters came up with some awesome responses to the question in the caption. Their reactions as his hypothetical parents ranged from asking him to do their makeup to helping him launch a beauty empire.

Many also offered their own beauty tips to the budding makeup artist.

The boy in the video is named Jack and lives in the U.K. His Instagram account, @makeuupbyjack has nearly 45,000 followers. Jack regularly posts photos and videos of his favorite makeup looks.

While there were tons of empowering responses to the viral video, there were also many negative reactions from Facebook users who said they would punish him if he were their son and do whatever they could to put a stop to his passion for makeup.

In response to the vitriol, one commenter brought up another recent viral video, in which a 3-year-old girl demonstrated how to change the oil in a car.

“Not 1 comment saying ‘she shouldnt be doing that! Thats a mans thing to do! Slap that girl up!’” the Facebook user wrote. “Everyone commenting saying how clever and awesome she was! So why is it OK for girls to do boys things but a boy getting slated for doing girl things?! Let people, kids, boys, girls whoever do whatever the fuck they like!”

Young boys with more “feminine” interests have faced backlash for not conforming to traditional gender norms.

Last month, Ellen DeGeneres invited a 12-year-old boy who was bullied for wearing makeup on her show. A viral Twitter hashtag also recently illustrated the way expectations of masculinity limit young boys and promote damaging stereotypes that can have a profound effect for many years.

In this day and age, maybe it’s time to just let kids be kids.

13 Awesome Baby Names That Pay Tribute To Famous Icons

We know that celebrities inspire popular baby names, from Audrey (Hepburn) to (John) Lennon. But celebrities also choose famous names for their children, with actors and musicians paying homage to legendary stars with their name choices.

Our report on this trend from a few years back highlighted picks like Mariah Carey’s Monroe and guitarist Slash’s Cash.

The trend hasn’t slowed down one bit! Those names remain in the headlines, but there’s a whole new class of celebrity baby names inspired by stars.

Bowie

Baby name Bowie made our original list, thanks to Rebecca Minkoff’s daughter, Bowie Lou. Since then, Zoe Saldana has welcomed a son named Bowie, as have Tess Holliday, and Dane DeHaan and Anna Wood. One reason for the acceleration? The early 2016 passing of music legend David Bowie has put this musical surname in the same class as Marley and Hendrix.

Presley

Jackson Rathbone’s younger child carries a doubly musical name: Presley Bowie. The middle is both a family name and a tribute to the late singer. Rathbone noted that Presley combines their family’s Southern heritage with a rockabilly vibe. After all, when the “Twilight” star isn’t acting, he’s also a musician. They’re not the first family to name a baby after Elvis: nearly 2,000 newborn Presleys entered the world in 2015 alone.

Etta

Carson Daly and Siri Pinter welcomed daughter Etta in 2012, just a few months after legendary singer Etta James passed away. Jazzy and sophisticated, Etta makes a logical successor to favorites Emma and Ella. It’s currently right outside of the U.S. Top 1000 list, but has risen steadily over the last few years.

Arlo

Legendary folk singer Arlo Guthrie’s unusual given name has become a rising favorite with plenty of parents. Leighton Meester and Adam Brody gave the name to a daughter; so did Johnny Knoxville. But we like this best for a boy, as chosen by actress Toni Collette, and more recently, English musician Charlie Simpson.

Axl

Fergie’s name for her young son came to her in a dream. The singer imagined herself watching legendary Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose perform at a festival. When she awoke, she and husband Josh Duhamel instantly knew it was the name for their son. Traditional Scandi Axel has history galore, but lately rock ‘n’ roll Axl is trending, too.

Greta

Count Greta as an early starbaby example of the trend – Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates gave name to a daughter years ago; so did David Caruso. But Ty Burrell of “Modern Family” puts Greta on the list of recent celebrity baby name picks. It brings to mind screen legend Greta Garbo, fitting right in with girls called Audrey and Ava.

Harlow

Nicole Richie chose a glam girl name when she and Joel Madden welcomed their daughter in 2008. Harlow comes from Jean, the original Blonde Bombshell of the 1930s silver screen. Plenty of other parents followed her lead, sending the name soaring. In 2015, “American Idol” alum Kimberly Caldwell welcomed a daughter with a double dose of blonde ambition: Harlow Monroe.

Hemingway

Parents love literary Harper and Holden. No surprise we’re looking for similar inspiration. Ben Hollingsworth of “Code Black” chose a little-used literary surname for his son last year: Hemingway, as in Ernest. The author is remembered for his writing, but also for his love of travel and sense of adventure. It makes a powerful combination for a child’s name.

Dusty

Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo have yet to confirm the reasons behind their daughter’s distinctive name ― though we know that Ellen DeGeneres suggested Dusty. Could it be inspired by 1960s icon Dusty Springfield, who recorded hits like “I Only Want to Be With You” and “Son of a Preacher Man”? It’s a fitting choice for the daughter of a singer and a supermodel.

Everly

The Everly Brothers were among the first class of musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1986. Anthony Kiedis, frontman for 2012 inductees Red Hot Chili Peppers, was among the first to use the name, for a son in 2007. But it’s Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan who sent the name skyrocketing, after they welcomed daughter Everly in 2013.

Isley

Glenn Howerton of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame solved the baby naming puzzle when he heard a song by the Isley Brothers. With singles like “This Old Heart of Mine” and “It’s Your Thing,” the brothers scored a string of hits in the 1960s and 70s. Today, their surname name fits right in with names like Riley, Miles, and even Isaac and Isaiah.

Montgomery

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen prove that Old Hollywood works for boys’ names, too. The couple named their third child, and first son, Montgomery in 2015. A year later, “The Young and the Restless” actor Greg Rikaart also gave the name to a son. Oscar-nominated actor Montgomery Clift used the nickname Monty; so do these newest little stars.

Ozzie

Max Greenfield is yet another dad to find a name that nods to his musical hero – Ozzy Osbourne. Son Ozzie James arrived in 2015. In an interview, Greenfield joked that it was an appropriate name in case his son turned out to be “a maniac.” Osbourne himself was born the much milder John Michael.

Thousands of people gathered in hundreds of cities Saturday to show their support for science and demand evidence-based policy in the wake of President Donald Trump’s anti-science agenda.

Awesome Teen Made Her Sister A Shirt That Exposes The Sexism Of Dress Codes

When 13-year-old Grace Villegas wore a long-sleeve, off-the-shoulder shirt to school this week, she didn’t expect her teachers to comment on it. But that’s exactly what happened.

Villegas told Yahoo Style that her Charlotte Russe shirt led teachers at her Kansas middle school to give her “looks that made me uncomfortable in my own skin.” The teen also said that several teachers made comments about the amount of skin she was exposing.

According to her older sister, Isabella, 18, one teacher told Grace that “she was revealing too much chest and shoulders,” and another told her, “You’re just making bad decisions today, Grace.” Isabella told The Huffington Post that Grace eventually changed outfits due to the shame she felt.

When the teen got home and told her older sister what had happened, Isabella was angry. So she decided to channel that frustration into a statement-making T-shirt.

I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.
Isabella Villegas, 18

The shirt Isabella made outlines her issues with school dress codes and the way they are enforced ― specifically when it comes to young women. The tee reads:

DRESS CODE:

-promotes the objectification & sexualization of young bodies

-blames the wearer for the onlooker’s perceptions/actions

-perpetuates rape culture

-is BS

Later that evening, she tweeted about it:

The tweet gained significant traction. As of Friday, it has nearly 1,200 retweets and 3,000 likes. And hundreds of people have tweeted back at Isabella.

The 18-year-old told HuffPost that while she doesn’t think dress codes should be completely abolished, they shouldn’t exist as tools of shame.

“Young girls should not be shamed for showing their shoulders and other non-sexual parts of their body for non-sexual reasons,” she said. “[Grace] went in feeling confident, and left feeling like her teachers no longer view her as the good student she is. I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.”

The Next Apple Watch Sounds Awesome

For GQ by Justin Fenner.

2016-04-26-1461688256-7766854-applewatchsecondgenerationrumors1.jpg
(Courtesy of Apple)

Did you know that Sunday, April 24 was the one-year anniversary of the Apple Watch? Neither did we. But after a year dominating the smartwatch category, the brilliant team of engineers and designers at Apple are reportedly doing what they do best: figuring out how to make good products even better.

Buried deep in the belly of a Wall Street Journal piece about the Apple Watch’s performance is the unconfirmed rumor that new versions of the device will include “cell-network connectivity and a faster processor.” In other words, future generations of the Apple Watch may be able to connect directly to your mobile service provider without having to tether to an iPhone. While Apple won’t confirm whether it’s working on this functionality, it would be a smart move for them to implement it. Not only would it improve the Watch’s performance, it would also make selling Watches to people who insist on using Android products a whole lot easier.

Apple is known for playing its cards pretty close to the chest. So if network connectivity is coming to the Watch, we won’t know about it until the company’s CEO Tim Cook says so himself. And that might happen soon: Cook’s next big on-stage moment is Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference, slated for June 13-17.

Avoid a Winter Workout Rut With This Awesome, Art-Inspired Gear

There’s nothing worse than working out in an outfit you hate—unflattering leggings, dingy sport bra, stretched-out top. Catching sight of your blah reflection in the mirror as you lunge your way through boot camp is enough to make you want to throw in the towel on the working out forever.

Luckily, that’s not as much of an issue as it used to be: Cool athletic brands are popping up faster than you can say “jump squat,” and the (well-documented) athleisure trend shows no signs of stopping. But while there are plenty of attractive activewear items on the market, there haven’t been many that incorporate art—until now.

Just in time for Miami’s upcoming Art Basel, cool-kid fitness retailer Bandier has released a series of capsule collections with well-known artists and activewear brands. All of the pieces not only feature eye-catching original prints, they were also created to be flattering on the body. Think: high-waisted leggings, sheer layers, and architecturally cut crop tops. These pieces look good at the gym, and they look awesome outside of it too. Just the thing to help avoid a winter workout wardrobe rut, don’t you think?

Scroll down for more details on Bandier’s Art-Meets-Activewear collection, available online December 3rd.

This Supremely Awesome Wedding Cake Will Make You Do A Double Take

They say marriage is all about compromise. If that’s the case, newlyweds Kia Parsons and Billy Bunning are off to an excellent start.

The UK couple had different visions when it came to their wedding cake; the bride wanted an all-white tiered cake with cascading sugar flowers. The groom, on the other hand, wanted to incorporate his love of comic book superheroes into the confection. So they met somewhere in the middle:

Julia Baker of Tier by Tier cake design created the cake for the couple’s August 14 wedding in Milton Keynes, England. One side is the traditional-looking cake the bride wanted. On the other side, icing curtains reveal the logos of Marvel characters Captain America, Spider-Man and Iron Man, as well as Batman from the DC Comics camp.

“I loved every minute making this cake, as I knew it would be something that people would be surprised at and appeal to all the Marvel fans!” Julia told The Huffington Post.

In all, she spent 40 hours on the cake. It took 12 hours to make the sugar flowers, and the cake-baking and building took about 28 hours.

Needless to say, Kia and Billy were thrilled with the finished product.

“Julia did such a fantastic job and we were completely overwhelmed by how brilliant it looked!” the bride told HuffPost. “From most angles of the room, the cake looked like a traditional wedding cake — just what we had wanted. It wasn’t until the cake was moved for us to cut that our guests realized there was a hidden extra.  Some didn’t even realize until the photos went online after the wedding!”

On Tuesday, a photo of the cake began going viral when it was shared by the Life Of Dad Facebook page.

“I was surprised at how popular it was and how quickly the pictures circulated on social media,” Julia said. “I have plenty more ideas to work on and I am calling these ‘double-take cakes.'”

Help Your Child Make Friends By Being Irresistibly Awesome

Are playdates a time for you to kick back and relax while your child is finally, blessedly, occupied? Don’t let yourself off the hook that easily, you slacker. Don’t you know your kid’s popularity and self-esteem are riding entirely on your ability to be the hook that draws friends back to your house as easily as dirt is drawn to your stupid beige carpeting? Anyway, here are some tried and true ways to be That Mom that kids whisper about, and not just because you forgot to take off your whitening strips and talked with a lisp at pickup.

1. Hover.

Every minute that your kid and his friend play on their own is another minute that can’t be spent on papier mache masks of dinosaurs. I mean, he SAID his friend liked dinosaurs. Look, you can use the popsicle sticks to make skull crests. Expert tip: The older the kids are, the more they like papier mache.

2. Reminisce.

You used to play Barbie too! You had the Dream House and you would make Ken pick Barbie up there to take her to prom. Other times, you would make Barbie and Ken into parents and Skipper was their sassy teenage daughter. You think you actually have some photos of you playing Barbie, if everyone wants to join you in the attic with the albums. It’ll just take a sec.

3. Tell funny jokes.

Expert tip: Teenagers secretly like really corny knock knock jokes. Make sure to have at least 50 at your disposal. If they aren’t laughing by joke #10, bring out the ones that involve puns. Oh wait, that’s all of them!

4. Fit in.

If they’re playing dress up, you play dress up. If they’re playing rock band, you play rock band. If they’re giggling about boys they like in school, in the privacy of your daughter’s room, use a cleverly secreted baby monitor to pick up on their conversation, and yell loudly upstairs: “Josh is definitely cuter!” Total bonding moment.

5. Provide snacks.

Endless snacks. Every time they try to leave, give them something else to eat. Preferably filled with sugar and food coloring. Nothing says, “I’m going to drop my kid off here every afternoon” to parents like a kid stuffed with cookies and Pixie Stix an hour before dinner. Bam, you’ve made your kid a best friend.

6. Buy them stuff.

To really make a hit, buy your kid’s friend something really expensive and/or something you already know he’s getting for his birthday from his parents. Don’t worry, he doesn’t look uncomfortable, he looks grateful.

7. The more the merrier.

Host your book club at the same time as your teenage son has a friend over to play video games. When Martha starts crying about her divorce again, as she’s wont to do after too many sangrias, ask your son’s friend if he agrees that a beautiful woman like Martha will meet a new guy in no time, and one that isn’t a narcissistic controlling jerk. Relatedly…

8. Ask them for advice.

Your daughter’s friend has excellent fashion taste. What would she like more than telling you which of your jeans from ten years ago make you look svelte and which make you look dowdy? It’s fun for everyone. Make sure to tell her that the only reason you gained those extra pounds was comfort eating during that rough patch in your marriage a couple years ago. She’s very wise for a 7-year-old.

9. Invite their parents.

When your child’s friend’s mom excitedly confirms, “This is drop off right? So convenient because you live right by Ikea, and — ” make sure to cut her off and invite her for coffee and homemade pie. Don’t be shy to tell her how you found a special recipe on Pinterest for just this occasion and threw out two pies that came out wrong before this one. It’s so cute when moms and their kids are all friends together.

10. Invite them yourself.

If for some reason, you’ve tried all of the above tactics, and your poor, socially inept child has ended up with fewer friends visiting the house rather than more, don’t lose heart. Reach out to your kids’ friends yourself, via social media, text or, even better, handwritten notes. Don’t let your child become friendless on your watch. And your wedding video isn’t going to watch itself!

Follow Dr. Rodman on Dr. Psych Mom, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Pre-order her book, How to Talk to Your Kids about Your Divorce: Healthy, Effective Communication Techniques for Your Changing Family.

Surfing, Skateboarding Cat Proves Our Feline Friends Make Awesome Adventure Buddies

Robert Dollwet says it’s his cat’s confidence that sets her apart.

We think it might be the fact that Didga the cat skateboards, swims, surfs — sometimes on top of dogs — and does gymnastics on command.

She even poops in a toilet. Then flushes.

OK, he’ll admit it: Didga is “most likely the most talented cat in the world,” says Dollwet, with more than a little fatherly pride.

You can watch this cat’s impressive range of skills in this spectacularly inspiring video Dollwet recently put together:

Dollwet is a former Hollywood dog trainer who moved to Australia seven years ago, for family reasons. (His partner, Tim, is Australian.)

Finding himself down under and sans pet, Dollwet went to the local animal shelter — where Didga basically insisted on being adopted.

“She was doing all she could do to get my attention,” Dollwet says. “Well, I had to go give this cat a closer look and I was sold. Animals really do pick you if you just let them.”

Back-cat-cha Didga & LucyI didn’t place her up there, Didga jumps on Lucy like a stunt horse rider. Why? I’m…

Posted by CATMANTOO on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Soon after that, Didga then chose her current profession as feline role model/adventure buddy.

The story goes that she and Dollwet were out and about, when a guy rode up on a skateboard, “jumped off of it and left it right in front of us while he walked into the shop,” Dollwet says.

“Didga without hesitation went over and got on the skateboard.”

But if Didga was inclined toward performance, she still needed training.

Dollwet also says he’s worked with her tons, using “lots of patience and lots of well-timed food reinforcement.”

And sure, part of the point of putting Didga’s amazing repertoire on display is to advertise Dollwet’s training abilities. (He’s got a pet training business in Australia, now — his canine clients often hang out with Didga.)

But another big aim is getting the world excited about cats. Especially rescue cats like Didga, who currently fill shelters, and might get snatched up a lot faster if folks realized just how much more fun they could be having with their feline friends.

“Cats can learn all sorts of things as long as you have patience and knowledge to teach them the right way,” says Dollwet, who’s put up a couple dozen YouTube tutorials on cat training so you and your cat can enjoy all sorts of hobbies together as well.

Or even just so your cat might finally stop scratching the furniture, since Dollwet also advocates against declawing.

“It’s all to bring attention to cats, and teaching people how to be more responsible,” he says.

Dad … you’re not doing it right!!

Posted by CATMANTOO on Friday, July 3, 2015

Of course even the most precocious kitty needs some down time.

Dollwet probably doesn’t mean to brag too much here, either, but he really can’t help himself: Didga is top cat — a “great companion” — in that department, too. And he’s got an Instagram feed full of photos to prove it.

“Her tricks are taught over weeks, months, even years. Just a little bit every day,” Dollwet says. “The rest of the time is spent doing normal cat things around my house.”

High-Five! It’s FRIDAY!!! ✋✋✋ #Didga

Tattoo Artist Turns Girl’s Leg Braces Into A Pair Of Wicked Awesome Disney Villains

A tattoo artist helped to make this girl feel like a Disney star; not a princess or queen, but an awesome villain.

Aaron Guillemette, a tattoo artist in Fall River, Massachusetts, created a set of Disney designs for 8-year-old Hope Laliberte’s leg braces, Today Parents reported. The illustrations feature two villains from classic animated movies — Ursula from “The Little Mermaid” and Cruella de Vil from “101 Dalmatians” — and they’re wicked awesome.

“I’m glad to be in a position where I can help the community in any way,” Guillemette told the news outlet. “When I was first approached about designing Hope’s braces, I thought it would be an awesome idea — especially when I heard what the subject matter would be. Hope wanted Disney villains on her braces, not princesses.”

hope laliberte leg brace

Hope and her twin sister were born premature at 24 weeks. The 8-year-old has cerebral palsy and a rare form of epilepsy, Yahoo reported, but her sister, Paige, does not. Hope has been wearing leg braces for the past four years but the clinic at Boston’s Children’s Hospital, where her braces are fitted, has limited designs.

Knowing their daughter was a big fan of Disney villains, Hope’s parents, Aaron Lebeau and Pamela Laliberte-Lebeau, turned to Guillemette, who owns the tattoo studio Up in Flames, for some custom designs.

Guillemette painted the Disney characters on sticker paper, which he then applied to Hope’s braces with coats of polyurethane to ensure they stuck, the artist told Herald News. The designs recreated the villains, but also incorporated Hope’s name — making them extra special.

And when Hope first saw her braces? “I screamed,” she told the news outlet.

The experience was special for Guillemette too, as he told Today Parents, “The look on her face when I gave them to her was worth everything it took to make them.”

Obama Tweets Back To Girl’s Awesome Letter About World Peace, Marriage Equality

A 5-year-old has some suggestions for how to solve a couple of global issues, and the leader of the free world has responded.

Last week, Yasmeen, self described as “5 almost 6 years old,” took to writing a handwritten letter to President Obama advocating for world peace and marriage equality.

Please stop war for our world, instead have a meeting. Please give a speech to tell everyone they can marry who they want. Thank you,” her message read.

On Friday, Yasmeen’s aunt tweeted a photo of the note to the POTUS Twitter handle, and that same day, the President replied.

“Tell your niece I really like her letter. Couldn’t agree more!” his tweet read.

After launching his first Twitter account six years into his presidency, President Obama broke the Guinness world record on May 18 for the “fasted time to reach 1 million followers on Twitter.” As of Tuesday, he has racked up 2.44 million followers. However, he has just seven published tweets — among them, his encouraging reply to Yasmeen.

This just goes to show, “please” and “thank you” still go a very long way.

7 David Letterman Quotes That Prove He’s Even MORE Awesome Than You Thought

Wit and witticisms from the man himself.

On Wednesday, David Letterman will step down as host of “The Late Show” after 22 years, on top of the 11 seasons he spent at NBC on “Late Night With David Letterman.” He’s a one-of-a-kind talent whose void in the late-night landscape will undoubtedly be felt.

But let’s not get all weepy and teary-eyed just yet. Instead, here are a few of Dave’s best quotes. Some are funny. Some are poignant. And the rest fall somewhere in between, where David Letterman was truly a master.

Nicki Minaj And Beyoncé Have An Awesome Summer Party In ‘Feeling Myself’ Video

Tidal subscribers were in luck on Monday when Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé dropped the video for “Feeling Myself” exclusively on the streaming service. The song, which appears on Minaj’s “The Pinkprint,” first leaked online last December. And now the video for “Feeling Myself” has leaked.

In the video, Minaj and Queen Bey play with squirt guns in inflatable pools in pink fur coats, eat cheeseburgers in a bounce house, have a champagne pool party and share Now and Laters. It’s pretty much the summer party of your dreams. (And proof that bucket hats only look good on Beyoncé.)

Beyoncé previously released her video for her new song “Die With You” on the artist-owned streaming service last month. Soon after, Rihanna released her video for “American Oxygen” and Jay Z released his music video for “Glory” via Tidal. There are also rumors that a possible Jay Z and Beyoncé joint album will exclusively premiere on Tidal, proving that the streaming service is serious about rewarding its users, especially after Jay Z’s special Tidal shows over the weekend.

Abbey Hendrickson writes the highly trafficked blog Aesthetic Outburst, which documents her life in an old farmhouse in rural New York. "You Are Awesome" collects together 25 of her craft ideas from her blog and her "20 in 20" challenge (for which she made 20 crafts in 20 days), each one presented in color and clearly explained step by step. What Awesome Conservative Cartoon Death Is America Missing out On?

This week’s poll from the Lester & Charlie Institute of Forward Thinking!

Conservatives are always outraged about something. A few weeks ago, we told you about the right-wing umbrage being tossed around — not because of Obamacare — but because of good old comic books. Well, for the conservative Comic-Con set, it’s getting worse.

Conservative comic book writers have already complained that illustrated heroes have become too complicated. Superman is “less patriotic.” Batman is too “dark and ambiguous.” Moral relativism is ruining our cherished American medium, and the real villains are those crazy liberals conspiring to keep conservative cartoonists from telling their wholesome stories!

There’s only so much that conservative comic fans can stand before they corner the market on Kryptonite and hold the world hostage, they cried!

All this yammer was before Marvel Comics thwakked conservatives this week with a double-whammy. First, we learned that the hammer-wielding Marvel character Thor will be reintroduced to readers as a woman. And the new Captain America will be black! Holy agenda, Batman!

This might have been enough to send these folks over the cliff. But then we read some incredible news, this time from Archie Comics: Archie Andrews, beloved white-bread icon since 1941, will be killed off in a storyline that has him taking a bullet for a gay gun-control advocate.

Yes, you read that right. “Life With Archie,” a progressive Archie Comics spin-off that imagines Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead as adults dealing with cancer and money troubles, first made news when it introduced an openly gay character, Kevin Keller. Keller is portrayed as a military veteran turned U.S. Senator who later went on to get gay married and take a firm stance in favor of gun control.

And now there’s this: The four-year-old spin-off series will conclude when Archie gets in between the gay gun-control Senator Keller and his would-be assassin.

If conservative comic book fans were sock-hopping mad before, this news is going to have them lining up at the Acme Corporation for a stockpile of instant holes and dynamite plungers.

Speaking of dynamite plungers, comic book characters do die. Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luther and even Hercules are pushing up daises along with hundreds of others.

So, back to those conservative writers who are complaining that comic book publishers don’t let them tell their stories. Are they of the opinion that everything should always stay the same, thank you very much, and let’s stop messing with things? Or would they take the side of killing off cherished characters?

We’d like to think these writers would rise to the challenge. No good writer, conservative or not, could forever resist the opportunity for a bold story move — even if that meant killing off an important character.

But how would they do it? If Archie Andrews is taking a bullet for homosexuals and gun-control advocates, how would these conservative writers put their spin on the inevitable death of a cherished character? And, more important, who would they kill? And how would they do it? Tell us what YOU think!

How We Are Awesome: Jamson S. Lwebuga Mukasa

Part of a new series at Find Create Joy, profiling awesome people.

2014-07-12-parents2.jpg

My parents, Jamson and Katherine Lwebuga Mukasa, when I was a kid.

“Get me an ambulance, get me out of here.”

It was about 2 in the morning and I was holding my Dad who was on the floor. Actually he’d fallen. Mom was standing beside me; my nephew was alert, even as he’s bravely wiping the sleep away. I say bravely because Dad’s recovering from a hematoma, or internal blood wound in his head, so having just fallen — or rather jumped — out of bed was not good.

How did we get here? And how could this event be a turning event in his recovery?

Read our story below.

For the past four years, since Dad’s first stroke, we’ve been in and out of the hospital. The event that led us to the place on the floor and me 3,000 miles away from home with my parents, was the most serious turn. Every other time, he’d rebounded but this time — something was different.

“I knew he thought he was dying. Of course we’re all dying. But I knew, as he looked at all the weight he’d lost, as he struggled to walk on his own, that he felt it.”

I’m telling you all this because you may find or have found yourself in similar circumstances, and perhaps this will help you.

Be Like a Fireman.

The volunteer firemen arrive. Anyone who does this work, know how wonderful you are. They were bright and calm in that dead night. They safely lifted him no drama and it was off to the hospital — again.

Be Open to Hidden and Potential New Paths.

Sometimes your life can take a turn that appears to not make sense. But if you are willing to go with it, it will show you what hidden potential and wealth is deep inside you and those around you.

In my family of origin, we’re all creative types, but I think Dad — maybe because he saw so many people needlessly die from third world situations — didn’t put much stock in making “art” as a career. He was interested in concrete ways of helping people.

2014-07-12-Dad1.jpg

My sensory memory of Dad during childhood was someone who was passionate about his work, but I didn’t see him a whole lot, except when I worked in his lab in the summer (a heroic effort to make me into a doctor that only convinced me 1) that hospitals and labs are very cold but 2) that I am interested in healers.)

He was however there when I needed him.

I competed at the Junior Olympics for track, and because of the expense, it was just me and Dad who took the trip out to Utah, where the games were held. I remember us taking a detour out to the salt flats and him explaining to me how these were formed, the weird dried up color of it — something I’d never seen before.

What we kids did not really know is that Dad had been keeping everything, I mean todo from our lives. In the process of helping our parents organize and downsize over the past year, we’ve found hundreds of photos — of his work, of course, but also from all seven of us kids — all our report cards, our art work, our projects, our ideas. He’d kept everything, neatly catalogued, like well, a scientist. He’d also kept papers from his brothers, brothers who’d passed away from before.

So all those times, I thought he was absent, or too much in his own world, he was present and aware in his own way. He was just trying to make sure we had ‘food on our family’ and pioneering a way to truly hold communities to account for air pollution.

2014-07-12-Attachment1.jpeg

And years before that, he was working on healing people with asthma, troubled by its pervasiveness in inner city communities. He led teams at Yale and Buffalo General researching this phenomena, as well as treating patients in their emergency rooms. And he’d taken pictures…

Always this appreciation and gentle awe of nature.

2014-07-12-Dad3.jpg

But until this year and excepting his school days, he’d never shared his work in public.

And then Dad decided — he wanted to do a show.

“It was my sister who in the midst of the latest insanity, got to making it happen.”

… making sure the gallery had the images and the write-up was correct and staging everything.

Embrace Challenges.

I’m running about noon on a hot day. I probably shouldn’t be doing this, but need to move.

A kid is walking with his Dad. He says as I pass by them –

“Hey Dad — pick it up hippo.”

From his dad’s reaction, I gather this is a reference to me. (If, for example, he’d been referring to his dad, his father would’ve made a joke, like, well, I’m walking faster than you, kiddo!)

So I turn around and jog back toward them, you should have seen the looks on their faces. And I say:

“Hippos can kill a man.”

The man is squirming, the kid is hiding behind his father – I enjoy this.

Yes, I did.

How do I know hippos can kill? Because my dad’s from Africa, f-cker and everyone who’s ever been to Africa knows this.

Dad’s that way, with a mischievous streak.

From my mother, I got my nerve to stand-up for myself.

Doctors are the worst patients though.

“A nurse is asking him what his name is, and he says, ‘I’m Mr. Wonderful.'”

It’s my shift at the hospital, it’s night and I am in the room he’s been moved to, and beneath the bravado, to me he looks like a little cat, or really — a boy. All I want to do is get him out of there. How many times I asked Jesus Christ to heal my father. Then I stopped asking and decided He was going to do it. So I started thanking Jesus for healing my father.

(I’m sure G-d had a good laugh at that, how me, the scientist’s daughter who’d so cynically viewed this realm, was here down on her knees praying every day, every night for this. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve prayed in general ways for myself, for loved ones, for world peace, etc. but this was a specific, urgent prayer. Not like, if you can please do this one thing for me — no. Didn’t care. This was a Jesus you gotta come through for me; you never let me down situation. Day and night I’m doing this. I was surprised at the energy I had to do this. )

Dire events can have a way of making you a believer in miracles. If you find yourself in such circumstances, you’re not alone, lean in on your faith. And if you have none, trust me, you can find it. You may need to take out a shovel and dig it up, you may need to find it in the twinkle of an eye of a bee, in the wind that pushes you along a walk, in the sparkle of the ocean, in the calling of a bird outside your door, but if you look, you’ll find it.

We often think our wounds are physical. Of course they are, you say. But in fact their root is something deeper than that. Make it your business to be fearless in navigating this territory.

He did.

In that moment when Dad asked for the ambulance, I knew he’d made a choice. Whatever had happened with his health, whatever disappointment he’d felt about no longer being able to do science or medicine the way he’d once done, I knew he was letting that go and committed to being healed.

The doctor in the ER says the jump out of bed was actually quite possibly his body reabsorbing some of the blood, which can sometimes cause unpredictable movements. But it was in fact a sign that he was healing.

Enjoy Your Life.

My parents today

For Dad, I think, the illness finally released him from the tyranny of having to be in charge, of the responsibility to help everyone. It allowed him to slow down — to sit in the yard and feel the sun on his feet, to share his pictures, to melt marshmallows with his grandkids.

Isn’t this what life’s about? Being in it, rather than watching it from afar?

When I left, I said goodbye once and then I just went back to say goodbye again. We shook hands and I started to cry.

He looked at me and smiled, his brown eyes, tinged blue now:

“I’m proud of you,” he says.

It was his way of saying it was okay to go now, that everything is okay now.

‘Leaked’ Star Wars Footage Is Awesome… And Fake

Someone’s having fun with computer graphics.

A fan-made video billed as “leaked” footage from the set of the new “Star Wars” film shows Imperial Forces taking over Germany’s Frankfurt Airport.

“Looks like the Story of Star Wars plays on Earth too in the next Episode,” YouTube user Frank Wunderlich writes in the description. “I took these pictures on my Flight back from the States to Germany at the Frankfurt Airport.”

The clips shows spacecraft such as Imperial Shuttles as well as AT-STs and even a giant AT-AT marching along the runway as Stormtroopers patrol the area.

At one point, an Imperial Star Destroyer is viewable in the background. At another, the Death Star is seen in the sky above.

No, it’s not really leaked footage. But it’s safe to say the Force is strong with this one.

Hero Captain ‘Sully’ Honored With Insanely Awesome Rap Ballet Music Video

This week saw the five year anniversary of “The Miracle on the Hudson,” and one very creative person decided to mark the occasion and pay musical tribute to Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III in a rather… err, uh, unconventional way.

Zach Sherwin has released the music video above entitled “Goose MCs” that has absolutely everything you could imagine in it and more. Is there a hip-hop sound and smooth lyrical rhyme that gets your head bobbing to the beat? Check. Are there ballerinas dancing and dressed up as both Captain Sullenberger and a flock of geese? Yup. A-Sides “Aside”: A Very Awesome Holiday with Gabba Gabba, Aye?

The Suburbs is probably in my top three favorite albums of all-time. But, I’ve been floored with all of Arcade Fire’s albums. I deeply felt all of the cuts on the dark Neon Bible, and caught on early when Funeral dropped in 2004. Surprisingly, up until this fall, I had never been able to see the band live. For years, I felt this gaping hole because of it. I’m fortunate in the field I’ve chosen to see a lot of concerts, but my favorite band had alluded me for quite a long time and I had this crushing need to see them anyway, anyhow when Win and his fellow talented Canucks hit the road again. In October, I scored tickets to see them perform tracks off their latest Reflektor album at a costume party within an abandoned Brooklyn warehouse. As I stood on line with my friend Max, a designer who lent me one of his masks for the evening, my anticipation for the show was as high as Snoop Dogg at a frat party. Once the lights went off, and the Fire’s alt-egos “The Reflektors” took the stage, I was mesmerized for an hour-and-a-half. I can honestly say their performance of “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)” that night was among the best songs I’ve ever seen live.

So why do I mention this Arcade Fire show from a few months ago? This is certainly not a “best of 2013” article. Been there, done that. I paint you this picture to tell you a different story altogether. Say what? I’ll explain. As I stated above, it’d been years that I had felt “a crushing need” to see a band live. Well, just a month after seeing Arcade Fire, it happened again. The astonishing thing about it was, unlike the Canadian indie rock band, it took just four months for me to see these guys live. If you don’t mind, I’ll paint another picture. (Not literally. I can’t paint.)

2013-12-24-gabba328.328.254.png

I had heard of Yo Gabba Gabba! long before my son was born nearly two years ago. I had seen it a few times for a few seconds while channel surfing, but as cool as I thought it was, I never thought to watch it regularly. Why would I? I wasn’t a parent and as trippy cool as it was, it just seemed wrong to tune in. Around that time, I also had a chance to play DJ at my friend’s son’s first birthday party, and play some tunes from the show. But, as wonderful as the kid-friendly tracks from The Roots and The Ting Tings (among others) were, I couldn’t keep them on my iTunes for very long. Fun side note: my friend Rich was dressed up as DJ Lance while I dressed up as Obi Wan Kenobi but referred to myself as DJ-Wan Kenobi. OK, maybe that’s not as innovative as I thought back then. Anyway, let me carry on. I promise there’s a point here. (I’m in too deep now to turn back on this post.)

Last summer, my wife and I started letting my son watch television here or there. We had planned to wait until he turned two, but fellow parents know how that can be almost impossible when there’s a toddler on one side of the room, and a big, shiny television on the other. That said, we’ve kept the TV-viewing down to a minimum but we make sure Gabbaland is a priority. We’ve all bonded over DJ Lance Rock and his pals Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex. Gabba has provided him with not just lively characters, sequences, and catchy songs, but with life lessons like don’t bite your friends or take a nap to recharge your batteries. Sound advice indeed. The show is innovative, fun, and just plain nuts with characters and vignettes that seem to come from Saturday Night Live’s Stefan’s imagination, but it’s an extremely valuable and educational show. Celebrity band and actor cameos help but the show is more than that.

So why am I shilling for a show that doesn’t need any help getting eyeballs tuned to it? The answer is quite simply Arcade Fire. Um, now I’ve lost you. Let me get you back. Last weekend, I took my family to the Beacon Theatre in New York City to see DJ Lance and the gang perform their A Very Awesome – Yo Gabba Gabba! Live – Holiday Show. The experience – from the minute we left the train station to the moment we arrived in the legendary New York venue – far exceeded all the wonderful feelings I had felt standing outside of the Brooklyn warehouse with my mask on. Look, seeing a band you love is great, but watching a show your child loves through his eyes of wonder is always going to top it. It helped that the show was so tip top on every level. From DJ Lance arriving on stage in a sleigh to the Gabba Gang recreating wonderful moments on the show like decorating a Christmas tree to Biz Markie presenting his funky beat of the day, it was a magical show – or as they’d say an “AAAAAAAAWESOME” show. If I was a toddler, this would’ve been my Beatles moment. It nearly was. Who would’ve guessed in all those years I was smitten to see my favorite band live that the moment I’d finally get to see them would be eclipsed a month later by a clumsy red cyclops named Muno?

About A-Sides Music
Jon Chattman’s “A-Sides Music” series was established in August 2011 and usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles — just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I’m hoping this is refreshing.
