How a Simple Mistake Helped Night of the Living Dead Become a Classic

George Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead is where the modern concept of the zombie as we understand it today really started. The film didn’t just essentially launch the zombie sub-genre, but it remains to this day eminently re-watchable — truly one of the giants of horror cinema.

And indeed, as the film hits its 50th anniversary this year, it continues to inspire new fans, new works, and new critical evaluation. The new book Journey of the Living Dead: A Tribute to Fifty Years of Flesh Eaters, by Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, celebrates 100 years of cinematic zombies with an analysis of how Night of the Living Dead permanently impacted the media landscape. Blumberg, who is an occasional contributor to IGN, has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from the book which delves into the curious case of NOTLD’s copyright, of lack thereof, and how it helped to contribute to the film’s massive success. Read on for the full excerpt…

Melania Trump’s Parents Become U.S. Citizens as Trump Administration Targets Legal Immigrants

First Lady Melania Trump‘s parents became naturalized United States citizens on Thursday, PEOPLE confirms.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Slovenian immigrants in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony in New York City, the Associated Press reported. The husband and wife — a former car dealer and a former textile factory worker, respectively — had been living in the United States as permanent residents.

The couples’ lawyer, Michael Wildes, did not specify the length of time the Knavses have been living in the United States, according to the AP. Under United States law, permanent residents must be in the country for at least five years in order to apply for citizenship.

Wildes told reporters outside a Manhattan federal building on Thursday that the Knavses’ citizenship process was “no different” from anyone else’s.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

“The dialogue we are having on immigration, this is an example of it going right,” Wildes added.

Wildes confirmed to PEOPLE that the Knavses became citizens on Thursday, but declined any further comment. The first lady’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While President Donald Trump‘s parents-in-law were successful in obtaining citizenship, his administration is seeking to make citizenship more difficult to obtain for both undocumented and legal immigrants.

In January, Trump proposed ending most family-based immigration and replacing it with a system prioritizing skilled immigrants. He has also recently said he’s looking to terminate a visa lottery program for people from countries under-represented in the U.S. This plan would limit immigrants like the first lady to sponsoring only spouses and underage children, as opposed to parents and other adult family members.

Throughout his tenure in the White House, Trump has upheld his promise to crack down on immigration. Last month, he released memos that make denying visa applications easier.

RELATED VIDEO: PEOPLE Writer Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

The memos “are intended to further restrict and discourage much-needed legal immigration,” Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance, told AXIOS. “This abrupt change in policy will have the perverse effect of discouraging businesses from having work performed in the U.S. — a highly undesirable outcome for all workers, businesses and the economy as a whole.”

Trump has not commented on the Knavses’ citizenship.

Ex-Teacher Debra LaFafave ‘Has Become a Christian and She’s a Great Mom’ Years After Student Sex Scandal: Friend

Wherever Debra Lafave goes, people recognize her.

Lafave became nationally-known in 2004 when she was arrested for having a sexual relationship with a student at the Tampa-area school where she taught. She was 24; he was 14. The story became international news — partly because female teacher sex scandals were relatively rare, and partly because Lafave was a tall, statuesque blonde.

The boy told police officers in Temple Terrace, Florida, that he had sex with Lafave three times in four days, according to court documents. One of those times was allegedly in a car while his 15-year-old cousin drove them around. He also said she performed a sex act on him multiple times, including during one encounter at her home.

In November 2006, Lafave pleaded guilty in Hillsborough County court to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior. In court, she offered her “deepest apologies” to the boy and his family and said she was “deeply remorseful.” She also disclosed that she was undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder.

“My greatest regret would probably be the fact that I put this young man through this,” she said in court. She was sentenced to three years house arrest and seven years probation and was required to register as a sex offender.

Thirteen years have passed since her arrest, but Lafave is still constantly recognized in the Tampa area. “We’d go to the mall, and people just stare,” her friend, Joe Zuniga, tells PEOPLE. “She looks the exact same. She still gets hate mail about it. She hates the attention.”

Zuniga, a Latin recording artist, has known LaFave for more than a decade — and she cooperated with him in the publication of a book about her life, Debra Lafave: A Crown of Beauty for Ashes. The self-published book is sympathetic to his friend, who Zuniga says has grown both spiritually and emotionally since the scandal.

“She’s a completely different person when she was when she was 24,” says Zuniga. “She has grown up a lot. She has become a Christian, and she’s a great mom. She recently got married, and she just ignores the media. She knows it will always be there, but she focuses on her life now. It’s very normal.”

“She Makes No Excuses”

Lafave is now 37 years old, living in a modest 3-bedroom home in a small Tampa suburb. She had twin boys in 2011, but the relationship didn’t last. She recently got married again.

As a registered sex offender, Lafave is required to check in with the state regularly to give her whereabouts.

Zuniga says that Lafave understands the gravity of what she did in 2004. “She makes no excuses for what she did,” he says. “She has always owned up to it. She says, ‘If I could turn back time, I’d never would do that.’ She understands that she didn’t just negatively affect her life, but she hurt many other people, and she is still very sorry for it.”

Lafave has not responded to PEOPLE’s request for an interview. “Everyone contacts her to tell her story,” says Zuniga. “I’ve asked her why she wouldn’t, and she says she’s just not interested in the attention. She wants to just live her life as a wife and mom.”

Have We Become An Angry Dating Culture?

I’m seeing a really disturbing trend out there.

I want you to take this time right now to read every single word that I’m writing.

I don’t want you to glance through this article, because if you’re single, this is by far the most important thing you've ever read in your life.

I’m going to start off with this:

How frustrated are you now in your dating life?

If you can write that down right now, write the one word that describes how you feel in your dating life right now.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve noticed a really disturbing trend when it comes down to dating.

The word that we used to have a long time ago, before the flood of Internet dating sites and dating apps and social media validation.

And all these ridiculous ways to get lost in cyber world.

The word that people used to use in dating was a magical word, it was called hope.

People got excited about finding a new mate.

People got excited about finding a new partner.

People went out and actually talked to one another.

If you’re a woman reading this article right now, I want you to think, when was the last time a man came over and approached you and flirted with you?

If you’re a man reading this, I want you to think, when was the last time you actually walked over and actually took a dare and flirted with a woman?

I want you to also ask yourself this question: when you're out in public, how often do you look at your cell phone?

Everybody is angry right now because everybody is escaping.

We’ve become a dating culture – especially in the western world – of people who are swiping and hoping that they’ll stumble across the right photo, the right picture, the perfect person.

Dating has become a paradoxic choice. It’s almost like shopping on Amazon.com for stereo equipment.

You take a look, you read the reviews and you see if – after reading reviews from random strangers – this is the perfect thing for you. And don’t even get me started on how dating is only a review away. Pretty soon there’s going to be a review site, a major one, a major breakthrough where people will post about their exes, and then you’re going to find out the truth about everybody and the next thing you know, it’s going to feed this dating anger even more.

Let’s even get more honest with today. When was the last time you went out on a date with somebody and didn’t Google them ahead of time so you can have a preconceived story about what you think they are due to somebody else’s opinion of them on Google?

Or maybe an article they wrote because well, in today’s neurotic world, we can go deeper and deeper into the void.

It used to be this magical moment: boy meets girl.

Boy asks girl out, actually calls her on a thing called the telephone, not a texting device. Your iPhone is a phone, people, not an iText.

There would be this anticipation. There would be nerves.

At the end of the date, you’d wonder if you liked each other, you’d do a post-date re-cap with your friends and you’d give that person another chance.

Now, there’s no post-date re-cap anymore. It’s either a yes or a no immediately. You don’t think about it because when you do. You go back into the illusional, delusional world of swipe dating.

Because we always know there’s going to be something better, because that’s the way we’ve been programmed.

And this is why people are so frustrated. People are frustrated and angry. Women are angrier than ever before.

I know this factually. I’ve been coaching women for a long time and as the years go by, women get more and more angry.

They feel like they are running out of time.

I'm in my 30's, when am I going to have my children, when am I going to meet that guy?

I'm in my 40's, I haven't met him yet. When am I going to find the man that I'm supposed to marry and live happily ever after.

I'm in my 50's and I'm running out of time. I'm not going to be pretty for a long time and all men want is younger women.

It just goes on and on and on. Women have this accelerator down they feel like they have no time left in the world, that they are just aging at 100 miles per hour and they get angry and pissed off that nobody is seeing their beauty, so they are forced to date the men they don’t want to date.

People are angry out there.

If you ask people how they feel about dating, most people will say they hate it.

To me, I’d ask why do you hate dating? It’s an opportunity to meet someone you’ve never met before. It’s so amazing because it gives you an opportunity to have the relationship you’ve never had.

If you’re not open, how do you expect to even meet somebody? And yet, we do all of these ridiculous things, pretending we’re open.

Swiping. Social media posting. We have this illusion of a social life. No wonder people hate dating, because we’re not getting anywhere!

We’re like bald snow tires in a snow storm. We just spin and spin and spin and get nowhere, and then when we finally do find somebody…

We try to hit the accelerator button down and try to get to a relationship as quickly as possible so we can avoid the thing that we truly hate: dating.

Folks, you’ve got to lose the anger to find love. Period. End of story. End of rant.

Lady Gaga: Gay Men ‘Helped Me Become A Woman’

Lady Gaga delivered a poignant and passionate monologue during her “RuPaul’s Drag Race” appearance this week about her relationship with the LGBTQ community and the significant role gay men have played in her life.

The moment happened during the first “Untucked” of this ninth season of “Drag Race,” the weekly behind-the-scenes web series that airs the day after the show’s Friday night episodes. Just after the 15:00 mark, Los Angeles-based contestant Valentina thanked Gaga for what she’s done “for the gay community” over the years.

The singer responded by talking about not only her own identity and how it relates to the LGBTQ community, but also the ways gay people have impacted her throughout her career.

I’m not a gay woman, you know? And [it’s] that touchy sort of subject where ― can you stand up for people that you are not necessarily fully part of that community in a way that you can understand what you all go through? But I have always been surrounded by incredibly intelligent, powerful gay men who have lifted me up through lots of changes in my life. Becoming famous was very strange and it’s the gay men in my life that helped me to become a woman. And I don’t know that a lot of people would understand that but it’s because of what you’ve through ― you survived so much that you inspire me to continue surviving.

While Gaga has identified as bisexual in the past, she also uses the word “ally” to describe her relationship with LGBTQ people.

Thanks for continuing to be an amazing advocate, Gaga!

Jane Austen Has Become An Alt-Right Icon, Somehow

Life as a Jane Austen fan can be, occasionally, infuriating. Male classmates deride her as subliterary fluff, pop culture uses her as a shorthand for romance novels, and, for women, professing to love her turns you into a cat-possessing cliché. The latest insult, however, is the most egregious yet: Alt-right thinkers have appropriated Austen as a symbol of white nationalism, according to a Chronicle of Higher Education article by Nicole M. Wright.

Wright, an assistant professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder, noticed an Austen cameo in a Milo Yiannopoulos speech in January. “As a Victorian novelist might have put it,” she quotes him, “it is a truth universally acknowledged that an ugly woman is far more likely to be a feminist than a hot one.” Amusingly, Wright points out, Yiannopoulos, an alt-right “fellow traveler,” was incorrect about Austen’s era: the Regency-era author died some 20 years before the Victorian period commenced.

More to the point, however, is that Yiannopoulos is not being very careful with his references. The “truth universally acknowledged” in Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, that “a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife,” is delivered with gentle sarcasm, not earnestness. In parodying the language of philosophical treatises, the author mocks the very simplistic assumption she’s putting forth.

Austen’s scathing wit, often directed at the shallow societal mores of her time, is often overlooked, so it’s little surprise that alt-righters would take superficial and misguided lessons from her work. Diving deeper into the overlap between the author and the alt-right, which is by no means new, Wright found several standard interpretations of Austen’s significance in a variety of alt-right forums she perused: “1) symbol of sexual purity; 2) standard-bearer of a vanished white traditional culture; and 3) exception that proves the rule of female inferiority.”

Given that Austen wrote marriage-plot novels set in the early 19th century, when chastity and advantageous marriages were middle- and upper-class women’s primary objectives, she’s easily appropriated as a symbol of premarital abstinence and valorization of traditional marriage. Jane Austen girls don’t hook up, they settle down; they don’t forge their own way, they build their lives around husbands. In a novel such as Emma or Mansfield Park, the casts are nearly, if not entirely, white, and their social encounters are governed by clear hierarchy and a shared culture.

Though absurd, the deployment of Austen to argue for the idyllic nature of an all-white, patriarchal state makes sense. Using white women as justification for egregious racism is one of the oldest tricks in the bigot’s book, a way of arguing that discrimination and violence against non-white people is necessary to protect fragile white women’s safety and purity. As perhaps the single most famous woman writer in Western history, Austen and her heroines are easily turned to this purpose. “Of course the one female author who has name recognition on par with Shakespeare is the one who gets dragged into debates like this,” Juliette Wells, an associate professor of English at Goucher College, told The New York Times.

Literary critics can and have critiqued Austen for the whiteness and apparent conventional morality of her novels, but the case is by no means simple. As biographer Paula Byrne argued in 2014, there’s substantial textual evidence that Mansfield Park obliquely but pointedly condemned colonial slavery and anti-black racism. In her unfinished novel, Sanditon, a West Indian heiress described as “half mulatto” appears yet never speaks; however, she is presented as a highly eligible maiden.

To use Austen as an alt-right icon, these thinkers must either read the author’s work poorly or not at all, relying on our cultural association of her work with chaste courtship, romantic marriage, and overwhelmingly white British society to imply an endorsement of those values. In fact, white nationalists would do well to realize, her work has endured largely because it cleverly and subtly skewered them.

‘Serial,’ The Podcast Obsession Of 2014, To Become A TV Show

When the “Serial” craze first got going last fall, one of the things you would hear from  listeners trying to get you on board was that the podcast was as compelling as a TV show. And it was true: once you started listening, the thirst for new installments rivaled the thirst for new episodes of great shows like “The Good Wife” and “Game of Thrones.”

Looks like Hollywood (being Hollywood) isn’t willing to cede such compulsiveness to public radio. Deadline reported today that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller — the writing-and-directing duo behind comedic hits like “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street” — are adapting “Serial” into a scripted TV series. Several of the podcast’s producers, including Season 1 host Sarah Koenig, “This American Life” host Ira Glass and “Serial” co-producer Julie Snyder, will be executive producers on the show.

“Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at ‘Serial,'” Snyder said in a statement. “Developing a show with them is exciting because we feel like we speak the same language, only they’re smarter than us.”

There were rumors, for a while, that producers might adapt the content of “Serial” Season 1 – the murder of teenager Hae-Min Lee and the subsequent dubious conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed — into a movie. But Lord and Miller’s show will take a different tack. It will focus, instead, on the making of the podcast. And it apparently won’t be about the original podcast’s first season. It’s not yet clear whether it will be based on some upcoming season – such as the upcoming one, reportedly on ex-POW Bowe Bergdahl – or a fictional season of their own devising.

A show about a group of podcast producers doesn’t sound all that exciting on the face of it. But Lord and Miller specialize in adapting unpromising material — schlocky ’80s TV shows, plotless children’s books, blocks — into thrilling narratives. So if anyone can do it, it’s them.

Kate Moss’s Daughter, Lila, Says She Does Not Want to Become a Model

Kate Moss‘ younger sister Lottie might have entered the modeling world, but the supermodel has another mini-me who’s not keen on the catwalk: her daughter with magazine editor Jefferson Hack, 12-year-old Lila Grace.

kate-moss-daughter-lila-grace

The tween opened herself up to Internet questions via her since disabled ask.fm page, resulting in an admission that just like everyone else and their mom, sometimes Moss embarrasses her. Thanks to an ask about what she envisions for her future, the world knows that while Lila might like to become a designer, she has no aspirations of super-dom (“mayb a fashion designer idrk but defo not a model” (sic)). For a favorite designer, she named Stella McCartney.

Kate’s daughter certainly has time to change her mind, but hearing that it’s a profession that holds little interest is seriously surprising. With the children of ’90s superstars coming of age right about now, we’ve seen an entire wave of genetically blessed offspring rise up and say they want to model (like gorgeous daughters belonging to Cindy Crawford and Sylvester Stallone, respectively).

embraces the legal substance of style, including all of the issues that may arise throughout the life of a garment, starting with the designer’s original idea and continuing all the way to the consumer’s closet. The diverse categories of law that affect the business of fashion include intellectual property, business and finance, international trade and government regulation, and consumer culture and civil rights. From the historical relationship between clothing and culture to current issues involving the globalization of fashion, the newly defined field of fashion law is made to measure for the modern apparel industry.

The new track will result in students receiving their master of laws, or L.L.M., in the fashion field (classes are also set to include modeling law and sustainability). Interested fashion folk who don’t want to necessarily become lawyers can also benefit: a master of studies in law will offer similar insight that can be used by anyone in the designing or retail worlds.

Diane von Furstenberg, president of the CFDA, said she thinks the new offerings will “help us all as an industry, lawyers or not, better understand, grow, and protect our businesses.” A scan of the past few years’ headlines might prove that the degree is needed now more than ever. Just this month, Isabel Marant came under fire for a blouse in her collection that echoes the signature designs of a community of apparel makers in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Lady Gaga is certainly no stranger to the limelight, but she doesn’t mind sharing it every now and again—especially when it comes to sharing it with her beyond-cute French bulldog, Miss Asia Kinney.

As such, the fabulous Miss Asia has some big fashion news of her own today: She’s the star of Coach’s new ad campaign. Called Coach Pups, it will feature other famous dogs, including Ariana Grande’s beagle-Chihuahua, Toulouse.

The campaign was shot by esteemed fashion photographer Steven Meisel, who often shoots Gaga herself for the likes of Vanity Fair and Vogue. It features Miss Asia modeling the Edie and Rucksack handbags.

“I am so proud of Miss Asia!” said Gaga in a statement. “She’s a natural in front of the camera, and we’re both so excited that the iconic Steven Meisel shot her for Coach’s pup campaign! I really love getting to watch my best friend be a star.”

Here’s What Pamela Anderson Wore to Become a Countess

Care for some clarification on that statement? Pamela Anderson has just been named Countess of Giglio, an area in Montenegro, in gratitude for her conservation work. For the official ceremony, shown on her Instagram and involving an official piece of paper and some sword-tapping, Anderson wore a long wrapdress that (with a few small modifications) wouldn’t look totally out of place on Kate Middleton or Spain’s ultra-chic Queen Letizia. For shoes, she wore black platforms with a thick heel.

Last fall, Anderson was awarded “the Dame of Grand Cross of the most prestigious knighthood title of Constantine Order of Saint George,” an honor given to her by Montenegro’s Prince Stefan (a self-declared royal of sorts, who says he’s the descendent of the former ruling family). The official ceremony to accept the official title—the Imperial Countess of Giglio—happened this weekend, and per a letter posted to her foundation’s website, she now seems permitted to sign documents as “Lady Pamela Anderson.” Her sons Brandon and Dylan were also knighted in appreciation for the work they do fighting animal abuse and climate change.

While the honorific comes from Montenegro, the ceremony took place in Italy.

Why Low Self-Esteem People Become Frozen In Bad Relationships

Much of my clinical work over the years has been with individuals and couples who experience a diminished sense of self-worth; low self-esteem. When they find that their relationships have entered the dead zone, they often feel stuck within them — troubled and frustrated. They’re unable to push for revitalizing them, if that’s possible, or leaving, if that would be healthier. And even as they uncover the roots of their low self-worth through therapy, they often remain frozen in a bad, even destructive relationship.

Some recent research provides some empirical confirmation and information about that clinical picture. It found that the partner with diminished self-esteem tends to avoid confronting problems or conflicts to begin with. That avoidance often reflects feelings of insecurity about the partner’s feelings for them. That, in turn, leads to hunkering down and withdrawing from the conflict, which might be resolved through more open, transparent communication.

The research, conducted by the University of Waterloo, confirmed in essence that partners with low self-esteem tend not to voice relationship complaints with their partner because they fear rejection. “There is a perception that people with low self-esteem tend to be more negative and complain a lot more,” says Megan McCarthy, the study’s lead author. “While that may be the case in some social situations, our study suggests that in romantic relationships, the partner with low self-esteem resists addressing problems.”

And, “If your significant other is not engaging in open and honest conversation about the relationship,” says McCarthy, “it may not be that they don’t care, but rather that they feel insecure and are afraid of being hurt. We’ve found that people with a more negative self-concept often have doubts and anxieties about the extent to which other people care about them,” she says. “This can drive low self-esteem people toward defensive, self-protective behavior, such as avoiding confrontation.”

A summary of the research also points out that people with low self-esteem’s resistance to address concerns may stem from a fear of negative outcomes. That is, they may believe that if they speak up and confront what troubles them, they risk rejection from their partner; and that, in turn, will damage their relationship. Consequently, that tends to lead to greater mutual dissatisfaction in the relationship.

“We may think that staying quiet, in a ‘forgive and forget’ kind of way, is constructive, and certainly it can be when we feel minor annoyances,” says McCarthy. “But when we have a serious issue in a relationship, failing to address those issues directly can actually be destructive.”

It’s good to see empirical support for familiar patterns that men and women often bring to psychotherapy. This can help them clarify how and why they perpetuate the negative relationships that they hope to heal; and what they need to deal with to bring about some positive movement.

How Meditation and Breath of Fire Will Help You Become a Master of Your Art

For the last few years I have been doing vipassana meditation and a breathing technique called breath of fire every morning and evening. These exercises have calmed me down and have increased my creativity in ways that I never before could have imagined.

Vipassana Meditation was created by the Buddha over 2,500 years ago and is still taught for free at centers and retreats throughout the world. Breath of Fire is a three minute breathing exercise that is a part of Kundalini Yoga.

Being Creative is like fishing in an Ocean. You are lucky if you can catch a fish. I consider catching a fish like catching a great idea. You can catch ideas, but how many of them are actually good and how many of them can you put together to make a project that is substantial? It could take months before you have one great song or one great script or one great flow of ideas that make you proud.

If you do breath of fire for three minutes daily within six months you will not be fishing in an ocean, you will be fishing in a fish tank. All your ideas will be right there in front of you. You will be able to grasp them more quickly and more easily. You will not spend weeks or months trying to find the fishes. You will find the great ideas in days or even hours. Imagine that? Imagine being able to hold onto and mold great ideas within days?

If you add twenty minutes of vipassana meditation daily on top of the three minutes of breath of fire in six months you will be fishing in a fish tank that is lighted. Now you are playing the game of creativity with ease and joy. Imagine being able to see all your ideas with such ease and also being able to connect the ideas?

Making a decision is a difficult trait for most creative types. We have so many ideas that we want to pursue that focus is often difficult. With breath of fire and meditation you will know which ideas to focus on and which ideas to discard. You will be able to clearly see how ideas match with each other and you will be able to clearly see how past ideas might now work with current ideas. You will become a Master of your Art.

I am now at such peace and ease with my life. My creative process is so fulfilling and enjoyable. I am OK with myself and that in itself is very important. Creative types have been known to be very hard on themselves. From Jim Belushi to Kurt Cobain to Robin Williams; we have seen our fair share of creative types being out of control. With meditation and breathing, I believe the suicide rates amongst creatives will disappear and the amount of ease and joy will increase.

One must enjoy their creative process. One must love their creative process. And one must be fulfilled in their creative process. Breath of Fire and Vipassana Meditation helps us achieve these goals.

For more information on Vipassana Meditation you can go to www.dhamma.org. For more information on Breath of Fire, you can take a Kundalini Yoga class at your local yoga studio.

5 Easy Ways to Become More Empowered

Caitlyn took the Internet by storm earlier this week, setting herself apart from men, women and other celebrities with facades, simply by copping up to who she really is and always has been. Oh- and that’s Caitlyn with a “C”, not a “K”. Sorry not sorry, Kris? I think we have an empowered woman on our hands and I couldn’t be more delighted!

The Vanity Fair teaser released on Monday gets me all sorts of excited and emotional. Caitlyn Jenner — the former Bruce Jenner — describes her transformation as finally becoming free. Feeling free and embracing your true self is all I can hope for- for anyone. It is a freedom worth fighting for. When you give yourself the space to love who you authentically are, you are able to live your life wholeheartedly.

Jenner compares her Vanity Fair cover shoot with winning the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics: “That was a good day, but the last couple of days are better… This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person.” Who would think that celebrating your own realness could feel better than becoming a world-class champ?

Well I’m all for it! And anyone can allow themselves that sort of satisfaction and independence because we all have the power to become the best versions of ourselves. So here are a few easy steps to take toward your own journey of accepting and loving who you really are as an individual and finding your personal sense of freedom:

1. F**k what people think of you
Understand that when people judge or criticize you, they are saying more about themselves then they are about you. I advise you to listen to what others say, but consider deeply — is this about you or them? Sometimes criticism can be helpful and beneficial for you. Other times, it may be directed toward you but not about you, so leave the purposeless stuff behind.

2. Don’t let society define you
This has to do with what’s expected of you. Courageous individuals and groups are breaking down the old-school compartments and labels, and have been for decades. Women were expected to be homemakers, men have to be the major ‘breadwinners’, same sex marriages aren’t acceptable, and more. Those ancient-minded ‘faux pas’ are becoming the new normal if they’re not already. You must do what brings YOU fulfillment.

3. Observe your intuition and inner thoughts
The only way to find yourself is to pay attention to what goes on in your own mind. As mentioned before, we are shaped by what we’ve learned throughout life. Make the differentiation between what you truly desire and what you’ve been conditioned to accept.

4. What makes you happy?
Write it down, make a list, keep a journal… but answer the question! And the second part to the question is: What are you passionate about? The answer to these two questions will be what drives you. Bring these interests, ideas and beliefs into your world.

5. The “golden rule”
Treat others as you want to be treated. Taking others’ into consideration will shed light on who you are as well. As mentioned in item 1: judgments and criticisms are usually about the person doing the judging or criticizing. We can also self-reflect in our generous acts as well, such as choosing one act of kindness over another because you can relate to it. Before you direct any sort of energy – positive or negative -toward someone else, find out where the motivation comes from within yourself. As you gain more awareness of yourself and how you act toward others, you will find the root of where your intentions come from; therefore, getting to know your true self.

Chris Christie Launches Bid to Become New President of FIFA, Citing Ability to Build Bridges

2015-06-03-1433346583-1567787-christieresized2.jpg

In a dramatic week for world football, Sepp Blatter, the President of FIFA, gave himself a red card and announced his resignation, and Chris Christie declared his goal of replacing him.

At a hastily arranged news conference in a Dunkin Donuts, Governor Christie said:

“I have always believed that I would make a great President, so for the benefit of the people of New Jersey, America and the world, I will be formally announcing my candidacy for the Presidency of FIFA as soon as I’m done eating. “

As reporters collectively choked on their frosted maple crèmes, Christie continued:

“I have to tell you guys that I would be the perfect person to replace Blatter.

I appreciate that a deep knowledge of football is essential for this job, and I have it! I’ve been watching the Cowboys, the Giants and the Eagles my entire life and I will bring all that know-how to the table for the benefit of American football fans throughout the world.

I also hear that running FIFA is like running the mafia. That’s awesome because I’m the Governor of New Jersey for Christ sakes, so enough said about my qualifications in that regard.

Additionally, I know that the new head of FIFA must have a lot of experience dealing with the US Department of Justice in ongoing criminal investigations. Well, guess what? I’ve been doing that for well over a year now!

Most importantly, I believe FIFA really needs someone to build all the bridges that have been burnt during this entire fiasco. And as I’m sure you will agree, whenever anyone thinks of bridges nowadays, they immediately think of me!”

After his announcement, Christie did not immediately respond to questions from reporters, citing an urgent need to finish his doughnut.

In further developments, other republican FIFA presidential hopefuls also declared their candidacies, notably Rick Perry, Scott Walker and Sarah Palin — the latter of whom called the decision to give the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, “the worst supreme court ruling since Roe v. Wade.”

No matter who else throws their hat into the ring, Christie is likely be the most appealing candidate to FIFA sponsors such as McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken — particularly given his extraordinary rates of consumption.

However, when contacted for comment, Irma Crook, one of the few remaining executives at FIFA, said: “Chris Christie wants to become the new President of FIFA? Oh my God, quick! Let’s get Sepp Blatter back!”

The Right and Wrong Way to Become a Professional Wedding Planner

There’s a right way and a wrong way to gain experience in the wedding planning career field. The right way is to get involved in planning events (of any kind) and get an internship or a job that gives you the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of wedding planning so you actually have the experience you need to flawlessly execute the most important day of brides and grooms lives.

But let’s start out with the wrong way to learn how to plan a destination wedding – lying or faking it will destroy your reputation (before you even have one) and ruin the first most important day in a couple’s life.

It is not uncommon for wedding planners to refer clients to one another when a planner encounters a client who wants something she doesn’t know how to do. In most cases, this happens when an engaged couple goes to their hometown wedding planner or a trusted travel agent and asks for direction.

For a travel agent, the logical thing to do is direct the clients to a reputable wedding planner at their destination and stick to the travel logistics. Trying to use this as an opportunity to get your foot in the door as a wedding planner is a very bad idea. Experienced professional destination wedding planners are busy people. We have plenty of legitimate clients calling us to plan their weddings. I have less than zero desire to teach or mentor a travel agent who might, eventually, become a competitor. I spend plenty of time teaching my interns, thank you very much.

More disturbingly, I’ve received a number of what, at first, appeared to be legitimate referrals (yes, we get those) from hometown wedding planners with clients who wanted to get married someplace else. For that sort of referral, we play a flat “thank you” fee if the client hires us, and then our company takes it from there. Unfortunately, unethical wanna-be destination wedding planners with absolutely no experience use the same tactic to try to learn how to do their job through somebody else. That’s not ethical and I won’t work with them.

Let me explain more clearly for anybody who thinks this sounds mean or unfair. This doesn’t just happen to me, as other colleagues in the industry have complained about it as well.

Contacting a pro and saying you are a “wedding planner” with a destination client and you want to “work together” is fine if you are actually a wedding planner. But if I can’t find you online, you’re not on WeddingWire, and your Facebook page has eight likes (all from your family), you aren’t a wedding planner. Someday you might be, but right now, you’re not. And if you’re advertising your services as such, you are a big fat liar and a fraud. You might want to check out the truth-in-advertising laws too before one of your victims (aka clients) realizes they’ve been duped and sues you for everything you do not have.

I have spent almost eight years honing my skills as a destination wedding planner. I worked hard to learn how to do an excellent job with all sorts of clients in a variety of destinations in the Caribbean, and I do not plan to give any of my tips and tricks away to a competitor, no matter how she sugar-coats it as a request to “work together.” I mentor interns year-round and trust me, those girls leave my company with the tools to plan a wedding just about anywhere. In exchange, they work their butts off for me while they’re here. We give them housing near the beach and a stipend, but they give us their heart and soul as they struggle to make each client’s day as perfect as possible. They want to succeed and make my company look good in the process. It’s win-win for me and the interns.

There is literally zero upside to me helping another wedding planner impress her clients in my own neighborhood, so to speak. “Working together” to plan a wedding when one of us has a clue – and the other does not – means that I’ll have to do triple the number of conference calls (she’ll want to discuss everything before and after the client call) and get half the credit for the final result, if that. In fact, that planner may well call herself “experienced” after I plan that initial wedding and start advertising her services as a destination wedding planner. She is not. And I won’t be a part of her ruse. Planning one destination wedding while somebody else does all the heavy lifting, and flying in a few days beforehand to enjoy the events, doesn’t make you a wedding planner. It makes you an annoying guest who wants to have input once she’s arrived. We get enough of those already, thank you anyway.

When I first started getting these inquiries from other planners, I got excited, I thought it was going to open up a whole new marketing opportunity for me, working with wedding pros all over the United States. Instead, I found that most of the planners who were contacting me weren’t really wedding planners at all. Having a “wedding planning certification” (what is that anyway?) and claiming you’ve successfully executed lots of weddings (even if they were all family members or besties and not a one of them actually paid you), does not make you a “professional” or “experienced” wedding planner. Sure, it’s great for your resume and sounds good in interview when you’re telling them how much you do know, but it doesn’t qualify you to handle a wedding and tens of thousands of dollars of a bride and groom’s money.

I’ll just say it – pretending you’re a destination wedding planner to get the client, and then calling somebody who really is a wedding planner to try and split the fee so they can do all the work or teach you how to do it, is total and utter bullshit. And you will get busted. Oh, you might make it to the actual wedding. But when the shit hits the fan and you don’t have the right permits, can’t figure out the marriage license paperwork, or don’t know what to do in that destination when a guest has a medical emergency, you’ll be outed for the fraud you are and destroyed on social media by your clients and their guests. 2015-05-21-1432242793-5033039-110813_SandyMalonePortraits422640x427.jpg

A couple of years ago my staff and I dropped everything to fix a wedding in distress because of a wanna-be wedding planner from Louisiana that got herself in over her head. We were hired by a nearly hysterical Mother of the Bride less than two months before the big day, and we had to start from scratch.

The planner (who it turned out had a full-time day job in a totally different field because she wasn’t actually a wedding planner) had been hired to plan a wedding in Mexico, assuring the clients that passports weren’t necessary for U.S. residents. Wrong. That’s how the wedding ended up in Puerto Rico.

Because the planner knew even less about the Caribbean than Mexico (is that even possible?), she’d put the guests in a hotel more than an hour away from the wedding venue where the wedding party was staying, and they’d all have to travel by bus – and not via a scenic route – to and from all of the wedding events at a cost of literally thousands of dollars to the wedding couple. The first thing we did was move all of the guests to a hotel a few minutes from the wedding venue. And then we fixed everything else that was a mess. I’d name and shame that planner except she had a clause in her contract forbidding her clients to review here ANYWHERE – a huge red flag when you’re hiring somebody – and I don’t want to cause my happy clients any grief.

My point is that misleading clients about your level of wedding planning experience is a ridiculous thing to do. You’ll get busted fast. And trying to get an experienced professional to plan it for you so you can take the credit is shady, at best. Anybody with sense isn’t going to let you take advantage of them like that.

If you want to be a wedding planner – hometown or destination – you have to get experience before you advertise yourself as a “professional.” If you’re don’t qualify for an internship because of your age (lots of folks are doing middle-age career changes), that’s not a non-starter for your new career. Believe it or not, there are literally tons of opportunities in your own community to help you learn how to plan events – fundraisers, fun runs, food drives, carnivals – all of these sorts of activities have planning committees that do all the work to make them happen. While they’re not likely to hand over the reins to you the first time you volunteer, prove your value and the next time you’ll have more responsibility.

If you’re lucky enough to be young and still in school when you’re reading this, you are literally surrounded by event planning opportunities. From Student Government, to Greek organizations, to religious clubs, to athletic booster clubs, literally everywhere you look, there’s something going on. All you have to do is sign up and get involved. That way, when you apply for a wedding planning internship or job later on, you already have legitimate event planning experience on your resume.

Experience is what will teach you how to be a wedding planner, and it’s what is going to give you the confidence (and make your clients feel confident about your ability) to stand at the helm and steer the ship. Because to a large degree, that’s what you’re doing. Not only do you have to do all the pre-planning and vendor coordination ahead of a wedding, it’s your job to keep the trains running on time, do quality control, and supervise all the vendors and perfect the little details on the wedding weekend. If you don’t know how to trouble-shoot real problems at a wedding, you’re not ready to be in charge. Period. A university degree in hospitality or tourism will give you a lot more foundation for a future career running events than some useless, undefined “Wedding Planner Certification,” but even with a diploma, you have to have the practical experience (and legitimate references for it) on your resume or nobody is going to be interested.

The moral of the story here is that you cannot cheat to become a good wedding planner. You can’t steal somebody else’s work as your own, you can’t subcontract the work to another planner and tell your client you’re doing the work, and most importantly, you cannot fake your way through it. If you try, you might end up with a lot of unhappy folks stuck in Mexico without passports.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events. And by the way, actual brides can hire us to consult for them on DIY weddings at home or away, but we won’t babysit somebody who claims to be a wedding planner.

This Movie Theater PSA Is Inspiring Kids To Become Teachers

A public service announcement encouraging young people to become teachers has been playing in hundreds of movie theaters around the country in recognition of national teacher appreciation week May 4 to May 9.

The PSA, called #TEACHNow, has been playing in nearly 400 theaters as part of Participant Media’s TEACH Campaign, which aims to stimulate great teaching.

“My goal with #TEACHNow is to visually illustrate that teaching is so important that it deserves its own recruitment piece featuring teachers as the heroic, life-changing, amazing people they are,” Lesley Chilcott, director of the ad, said in a press release. “We need to show our most talented youth that teaching is an incredible career choice.”

“We’re really trying to create an awareness that innovative passionate students should consider teaching,” Lisa Zimble, director of the TEACH Campaign, told The Huffington Post.

Kids who went to the movies this week to see superhero shows like, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” may have left inspired to become a different kind of superhero.

Did Coco Chanel Become the Designer She Was Because She Was…Single?

A fashion professor has raised an interesting point I’ve never thought about before: Was Coco Chanel‘s success tied, partially, to the fact that she never married? The designer wasn’t without her share of long-term, emotionally charged love affairs; one theory for the beyond-famous interlocking C’s is that the logo was created as a way to immortalize the love between Chanel and Boy Capel after he passed away. But lovers aside, no one ever put a ring on it.

coco-chanel-2

“For Chanel and young divorcée Madeleine Vionnet, their single status, atypical for the time, meant radically rethinking their relationship to the male gaze and therefore to style,” Alice Litscher, a professor in fashion communication at the Institut Français de la Mode in Paris, told The Guardian. “Vionnet’s loose bias cuts or Coco’s tweeds expressed a radical sense of liberation from classical femininity and seduction.”

Chanel was paramount in changing how women viewed style, introducing comfortable jersey and taking inspiration from the uniforms of sailors, both of which combined to create the easy shifts we still wear today (Downton Abbey watchers, think about when you first noticed the female characters’ costumes begin to change—that would’ve been Chanel’s influence at play).

Have you read a Chanel biography? If you haven’t, I’m suggesting it for any lazy couch time over the holidays. She was fascinating.

There’s a huge myth around fear that I want to dispel today and it’s that certain people are more fearless than others. I’m sure there are exceptions to this, but for the majority of seemingly fearless people, the correct term would be more like fear-filled.

I’ve done a lot of big things in my life and business lately, as well as in my relationship, finances and everything in between, but I’m not fearless.

The truth is, I’m riddled with fear more often than not.
Creating a life and business around your passion, going deeper into intimacy and connection in relationships, putting yourself out there, trying new things, expressing yourself in whatever way you do… it’s all scary as hell. It’s uncomfortable, challenging, terrifying and hard. But when you commit to creating an amazing life, fear’s just part of the process. People who appear fearless are the ones who understand this.

It’s not at all about an absence of fear… it’s about knowing that fear will always be there, even more so the deeper you descend on the journey, and letting it guide you rather than deter you from moving forward. I live a fear-filled life because that’s what it takes to create amazing things and attract amazing people, experiences and opportunities.

Four things you need to know to become “fearless” in your life:

1) Fear will never go away unless you settle into a rut.
Really sit with that for a moment… if you’re not experiencing fear in your life right now, chances are you’re sticking to what you know, settling for less than you deserve, and you likely aren’t doing much growing either. If you’re doing the work, building amazing things, and diving deeper into your truth, you’re experiencing fear and discomfort. It comes with the territory and there’s no way around it. So if you’re not, take an honest look at your life and see if you’ve settled or fallen into a comfortable rut to avoid the discomfort.

2) It gets easier with time.
At this point in my journey, I’m pretty comfortable with fear. I’m launching a newish website and offerings, putting out my first book, diving deep and dark in my personal development and relationships, letting go of things, shifting my life and business, and generally doing more and more of the work it takes to create an amazing life. It’s scary, hard and uncomfortable. I’m terrified every time I send out a vulnerable blog post, release a new module for my program (despite doing this work for almost a decade), and step further into my truth.

3) Fear can be the best fuel if you let it.
I’ve talked and written about this many times as one of my favorite quotes from Robert Heller, “fear is excitement without the breath.” Fear is an awesome kind of energy that can be easily shifted into energy, excitement, enthusiasm, and fuel if you stop fighting it. Rather than running away or retreating, or avoiding it all together, feel the fear and breathe into it deeply. Let it turn into the nervous, excited, and jittery energy it can be and then move forward. I do this often and it always helps me tackle the scary things in my life and businesses with more ease than tension.

4) Bravery comes from vulnerability, not fearlessness.
Something Brené Brown says that I love is, “Vulnerability is our most accurate measure of courage.” If you want to be brave, “fearless” and courageous, you have to be vulnerable, there’s no way around it. Creating amazing things in your life and business requires depth, connection, expression, and truth. It requires you to put yourself out there in more ways than one and that’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. The more vulnerable I get, the deeper my personal relationships and connection to my clients and audience have become. I can’t count the number of blog posts or social media updates I’ve hesitated to hit send on, and then had to walk away from the computer so I couldn’t quickly “undo” them. Those are the times I’ve most deeply connected with you. And it wasn’t until I started getting more vulnerable that my business really began to blossom.

Take action now!
Where do you want to be “fearless” in your life, work, or relationships? Where are you stuck in a comfortable rut? Choose one thing you’ll do right now to be fear-filled and vulnerable and go do it. Breathe into the fear that comes up and trust in the journey. Fear is a guide as much as it is fuel, so whatever you need next, you’ll likely feel the most fear around. Let me know what you chose and how you executed and we’ll celebrate together!

When Barcodes Become The Basis For Contemporary Art

What if the barcode on your favorite cereal box could be transformed into a glitched-out, abstract artwork, dripping with geometric visuals and robotic melodies?

Thankfully Dmitry Morozov, a Moscow-based multimedia artist, is here to turn our far-out technological dreams into a reality. In an an interactive installation entitled “Post Code,” Morozov transforms the omnipresent consumerist icons into digital landscapes of melting colors and shapes.

book

To do so, Morozov created an artistically inclined mechanism that scans the barcodes of various objects, turning the encoded digits into post-card sized works of glitch art. Along with visual translations, the mechanism also retrieves the melodic beeps and hums hidden within the codes, extracting from the simple swipe-happy bars unique combinations of both sound and sight.

While many barcode-centric artworks focus on the bizarre relationship between buyers and goods or the monotonous nature of the black-and-white codes, Morozov’s works view the tiny designs as individual sites of beauty. Morozov frees the barcodes from their solely digital existence, blessing them with a physical form — and a beautiful one at that.

As the artists writes on his website, “Thus, such exclusively digital object [sic] becomes means of obtaining an artifact, suitable for archaic, but ultimately human mode of communication — a postcard.”

On The Fly: Today, You Become A Man And I Become Broke

As a rule, I try not to criticize the choices of others. If they have earned or inherited their piles of money, who am I to stand in judgement of how they spend it?

Actually, I’m officially tossing that rule out the window, effective immediately. Yes, I am judging people who throw elaborate Bar Mitzvah parties. I judge them to have lost all perspective on the world in which we live. I judge them to be setting a hideous example for their kids, including the newly minted man in the family. I judge them to have taken leave of their senses along with their credit card.

In turn, they may judge me and deem me jealous because they could afford to hire a professional event stager to transform the room into a spaceship, arrange for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders to stop by and pose for photos with the pint-sized man of the hour, and to have Steven Spielberg produce and direct a movie that is invariably titled “Sammy: The Early Years.”

Yes, they may deem me jealous, but they’d be wrong.

What is clamping my wallet shut as we plan for my son’s Bar Mitzvah is the idea that there should be any planning of this magnitude involved at all. To become a Bar Mitzvah is a rite of passage filled with ritual and tradition. I love that part of it. What we do about the party afterward, well, that’s on us. The modern-day spin on the party can cost upwards of $ 100,000 and is treated in some circles as a mini-wedding with the boy’s mother behaving like a Bridezilla. Just the other day, another Mother-of-a-Bar-Mitzvah-boy called me upset that her own mother had handed her a long list of guests she wanted to invite. “My son doesn’t even know these people,” my friend said.

And then there’s the pity you will get for trying to keep the event budget down to a month’s take-home pay. A well-meaning friend keeps sending me links to home-made centerpieces she finds on Pinterest. For under $ 11 — and, in my case, six hours of my life per centerpiece — I can make them out of candy and pipe cleaners, she told me. And if I change the theme to Legos, the possibilities are endless for matching place cards and invitations, she advises. When I told her there will be no “theme,” she couldn’t quite process it. “What will the decorations be then?” she asked.

The problem is, my idea of what a Bar Mitzvah party is is very different from modern-day conventions. I want something where the celebration’s roots go back in time the way the ceremony does, something that embraces family and community.

I want my son to have a Shtetl-style Bar Mitzvah, where we come together as a village to share the day. His special aunties will bring the freshly baked bread and I’ll slaughter the chickens. We will drink and dance and make music together in celebration of the uber-Shabbat on which my son accepted the responsibilities of adulthood as a Jew. In olden days, he would also be accepting the burden of paying the taxes for the family as well, which is why the Bar Mitzvah dad thanks G-d for his son’s ascension to manhood.

I want to have the party in our home — because the Shtetl lacks adequate and affordable banquet facilities — and all the neighbors will be invited — useful if we play music loud or late. We will remember to feed the hungry and welcome the poor to our party because joy feels best when shared. We will practice inclusiveness and not turn up our noses at inviting the kids who never get invited to join the Bar Mitzvah party circuit. We will go out of our way to make sure our elder relatives and teachers are there because without them, how would we know about our tradition and where we came from? We will welcome our friends and loved ones to our home and our pride and joy in our son will be infectious.

We do not need elaborate floral centerpieces or clever themes or matching color schemes to do any of that, do we? Do we even need a DJ? OK, maybe a DJ.

Much to my son’s initial horror, I am dead serious. I even consulted MyJewishLearning.com, my guide to all things Jewish when my rabbi isn’t available and sometimes even when she is.

According to MyJewishLearning, the Bar Mitzvah feast historically was served as the third meal of the Sabbath (dinner) and always occurred in the parents’ home. In the 17th Century, German Jews added the tradition of buying the Bar Mitzvah boy a set of new clothes for the occasion; before that, he wore his existing finery and presumably his mother didn’t spend hours getting her hair and makeup done either. An hour before afternoon prayers, the Bar Mitzvah boy went to the homes of the guests to invite them to the meal. There were no invitations with matching pre-stamped RSVP cards mailed eight weeks in advance and no Save The Date notices sent out six months before the event. At the meal, the boy delivered his speech and served as the leader in reciting the grace after eating. Amen.

I want my son’s Bar Mitzvah ceremony and party to mean something. I don’t want it to be a carbon copy of the ones he went to last week and the week before that. I don’t want to have conversations like “Jake had a photo booth and gave everyone hats” or “Dylan had a chocolate fountain plus the cake” or “Michael had a stretch limo bring all the kids to the restaurant.”

I want my son to feel special, to know we recognize the hard work and study he has put into this event in his life. I just don’t want the only take-away to be a henna air-brushed tattoo and party favors that wind up in the trash the next day anyway.

But you are probably thinking about now, “Shouldn’t the party be about him? Shouldn’t it be what he wants?” I see my son’s becoming a Bar Mitzvah as a teaching moment for all of us, so no — not necessarily. My children do not always get what they want; they get what they need to the best of our ability to afford them. I will listen to his ideas about how he sees his party and we will discuss them. We will not overspend and we will throw a Bar Mitzvah party that speaks to the values of the occasion. We will certainly compromise and my first compromise was to agree that I will not actually slaughter any chickens.

“That’s a relief, Mom,” he told me, smiling. And then, proving that he “got” the message, he showed me an ad from a vendor advertising how their photo booths will “impress all your guests.” His comment: “Like a photo booth impresses people?”

Mission accomplished.
