David Spade Reveals He Stopped Talking to His Absentee Father After Becoming a Dad Himself

Becoming a parent changed David Spade‘s life — and his own family dynamics.

In his newly released audiobook, A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World, the actor and comedian opens up about how his relationship with his father Wayne, who goes by the nickname Sam, changed after he welcomed his own child, daughter Harper, with former Playboy Playmate Jillian Grace in 2008.

“This one’s going to be a little tricky — this is a chapter about my dad, and the way that it fits into this audiobook is I’m a dad now,” he says. “And the difference — and why it caused some complications with my own dad — is because he was sort of a ne’er-do-well, which is putting it mildly. I think f—up is more on the nose.”

Spade, 54, describes his father as “cool and funny,” but also “a bit of a skirt-chaser, times a thousand million,” and “a bit of boozy Suzy.” When he was 4 and his brothers Bryan and Andy Spade were 8 and 6, respectively, Spade says his father suddenly vanished from their family home in Michigan.

Growing up, Spade says he saw his father about two or three times a year.

“We’d be sitting at the doors with our bags because he would call us and say he wanted to see us,” says the actor. “What I didn’t realize back then was that it was a control thing. We never had his phone number. He would call us when he felt like it.”

Nevertheless, the actor says the duo maintained a relationship and even moved in together in Arizona at one point. But years later, when Spade became a father himself, everything changed.

“I have a daughter now, and she came out of a situation with a girl I was dating and it was not planned,” Spade says. “And I get angry, because my brothers and I were planned. Now, I’m so happy that I have a daughter and she’s the best thing in my life, but I couldn’t picture my daughter being sick and calling me and me not answering.”

“Or just calling her without any way for her to call me,” he explains. “That would be too much, it would be too rough. So when I had her, I got this new tidal wave of resentment towards my dad because of his irresponsible behavior and manipulative mean streak. So I stopped talking to him.”

“I know it sounds crazy, but I just thought, ‘Holy s—. You really played your cards the way you did when we were kids,’ ” Spade continues. “I mean, I like to have fun too, but it can’t be 24/7 and literally nothing else. The only thing my dad really did was give me an excuse to be nuts. I can always cry and go, ‘It’s my dad’s fault. He left me when I was 4! Now I’m crazy.’ ”

Though he has not divulged any recent details of his co-parenting relationship with Grace, Spade posts photos and videos of Harper on Instagram and sometimes shares sweet anecdotes about her while appearing on talk shows. In 2015, he joked about navigating the ropes of parenthood while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“I’m new at this — how long ’til I can school her in tic-tac-toe?” he said. “Because I am really good at it, but I’m faking it so she can win. But now I’m getting frustrated because she thinks I’m dumb. She laughs so hard when she wins and then I think, ‘Well, I could beat you.’ I want to say that, but I don’t.”

“I think when she turns 6, I’m really going to turn it on,” Spade quipped. “I’ll start really winning a lot. I’m going to sweep every category.”

Custom Becoming a Cash Cow for Tailored Brands

Tailored Brands will continue to capitalize on the strength of its custom clothing business in 2018 — after growing the category to more than $ 100 million in sales last year.
In reporting strong results for 2017 after the market closed Wednesday, Doug Ewert, chief executive officer, said he believes the company is now “the largest and fastest-growing retailer of men’s custom clothing. So far this year, custom sales are now trending above $ 3 million per week, and we are clearly in the early innings of this opportunity. With custom suits starting at around $ 400, we can serve a large addressable market of men who want a personalized look and a perfect fit and a reasonable price.”
He said the plan is to “significantly increase the penetration of custom as a percentage of total suits sold.” The bedrock of this strategy is the company’s ability to deliver a custom suit in an increasingly shorter period of time. “During 2017, we tested expedited custom delivery and validated our hypothesis that the faster we can deliver a custom suit, the more customers will give it a try,” he said.
Earlier this year, Tailored Brands said it will now deliver Joseph Abboud or Jos. A. Bank Reserve

Former 007 George Lazenby on Becoming Bond

Combining a documentary and narrative approach, Hulu’s new film Becoming Bond chronicles the life of George Lazenby, the roguish Australian male model-turned-actor who succeeded Sean Connery in the role of James Bond.

Having never acted before in his life, Lazenby won the role of cinema’s most famous secret agent but only played the role once, in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. According to Lazenby, he turned his back on fame and fortune, rejecting a multi-picture and $ 1 million offer to return as 007. (The franchise ultimately wooed Connery back for one more film before Roger Moore took over the role.)

Becoming Bond  is built around Lazenby recalling his life — from his impoverished, problem child youth in Australia to his days as a mechanic and car salesman to finally his accidental career as a male model and then, of course, the big screen’s second James Bond — and love affairs, which are all reenacted in largely comedic fashion in scenes starring Josh Lawson (Superstore, House of Lies) as Lazenby.

Watch Out, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Is Becoming A Magazine

Oh Goop, where do we begin? The purveyor of vaginal eggs, leaf-scented perfume and $ 275 shower heads has left our brains spinning from fact-checking its dubious medical claims.

And now, all that Goopiness is spreading to a newsstand near you.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site inked a deal with Conde Nast that includes quarterly print issues of Goop, Women’s Wear Daily reports.

The magazine, which reportedly grew out of a conversation between Paltrow and Anna Wintour, will feature typical Goop content on topics like health, cooking, style, design, wellness and travel. The first issue debuts in September.

This is great news for those of us who like to ogle extravagant gift guides on paper, but as always, be prepared to take Goop’s health suggestions with a grain of salt (and NOT an iodine supplement).

In Trump’s America, Comedy Clubs Are Becoming Less And Less Funny

One night last month, improv player Peter Kim took the stage at the legendary Second City theatre in Chicago with the other members of his acclaimed comedy troupe for what was supposed to be just another fun night of laughs.

It would turn out to be anything but. During the show, the cast, which often involves audience members in their skits, asked a woman in the crowd to name something that annoyed her, “like getting stuck in traffic.”

But the answer that rang loudest didn’t come from the woman. It came from another man in the audience, who was seated next to a Hispanic couple. “Sitting too close to a Mexican!” he shouted, before requesting a high-five from a friend.

I think that this moment of Donald Trump has resulted in a few people feeling more license to shout out crude remarks and behave crudely.
Second City CEO Andrew Alexander

The incident shook Kim, so much so that he decided he’d had enough. Over the preceding year, hecklers had become an increasing problem for him and his fellow comedians, spewing racist, misogynistic and homophobic language during shows.

In an essay for Vox, Kim recalled “a man dragging his wife out of the theater while yelling ‘fucking liberals can go to hell!’” Another time a man called him a faggot while Kim was exiting the stage. Then there was the incident when an audience member yelled, “Don’t clap for him,” while Kim was dressed in full drag. That doesn’t even include all the times people from the audience heckled him for being Asian.

And so, Kim decided to call it quits. Three other members of the show left around the same time, too. Two members of management also quit, and another member of management took a leave of absence.

A Second City spokeswoman declined to comment about the departures when reached by The Huffington Post, but Andrew Alexander, the club’s CEO and producer, told Chicagoist that while multiple factors helped explain the departures, antagonistic, conservative-leaning crowds were a large factor.

“Over the last six months, we’ve seen a much higher level of audience verbal shout-outs; and sometimes those have become racist,” Alexander said. “In 44 years of this work, I’ve never seen anything like it. The audience seems to feel like they have license in very unpleasant ways.”

He added, “I think that this moment of Donald Trump has resulted in a few people feeling more license to shout out crude remarks and behave crudely.”

The situation at Second City may seem extreme, but it appears to be far from unique. Comedy clubs in the lead-up to the election (and now in its wake) have presented a unique breeding ground for conflict. After all, there are very few, if any other, public spheres in modern American life in which conservative Americans pay money to sit in a room as left-leaning comics discuss the state of the world. Add in alcohol, and the possibility for conflict only heightens.

Amy Schumer talks with a Donald Trump supporter

In the last two months, two separate incidents involving prominent liberal comedians and their conservative audiences have made national news. On Oct. 16 in Tampa, Florida, approximately two hundred audience members violently booed and then walked out of an Amy Schumer show after she criticized Trump, asking,  “Do you get worried at all with how impulsive he is, that he gets so fired up from ‘Saturday Night Live’ doing a skit on him?”

Just under a month later and only days after Trump’s election, Wanda Sykes took the stage at Boston’s TD Garden for a fundraiser on behalf of The Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care. But the situation quickly turned ugly once she joked that Trump was not the country’s first “racist, sexist, homophobic president,” leading to unmistakeable and loud boos from the audience.

“Fuck you, motherfuckers, fuck all of y’all.” “Fuck you, you, you … How can you say he’s not racist? ‘Grab them by the pussy’? How can you say he’s not sexist? You can you say he’s not racist? How can you say he’s not homophobic?” (Sykes later noted in a Facebook post that the audience “cheered and applauded” at the end of her set when Sykes’ wife ran on stage and gave her a kiss.)

Wanda Sykes faces off against an antagonistic crowd in Boston

News of those two incidents has been widely circulated. But they appear to be far from the only examples of comedy clubs becoming increasingly tense in recent months. Former “SNL” star Darrell Hammond told HuffPost that a number of pro-Trump audience members “were just screaming” at a recent show.

At a post-election show in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Nov. 11, a set by another former “SNL” cast member, Tim Meadows, came to a deflating end after a heckling Trump supporter got into it with a security guard.

The scene at comedy clubs mirrors what has transpired more generally since Trump’s election. Between Nov. 9 and Nov. 18, the Southern Poverty Law Center received word of more than 700 incidents of hateful incidents of harassment. In New York, NYPD commissioner James O’Neill said there has been a 31 percent increase in hate crimes in the city in 2016 compared to this time in 2015.

It’s definitely an aggressive time to be a comedian.
Comedian Todd Masterson

“Since the election, we’ve seen a big uptick in incidents of vandalism, threats, intimidation spurred by the rhetoric surrounding Mr. Trump’s election,” said Southern Poverty Law Center president Richard Cohen. “The white supremacists out there are celebrating his victory and many are feeling their oats.”

Todd Masterson, a Los Angeles–based comedian, said that while he personally hasn’t witnessed an uptick in heckling Trump supporters since the election, he has noticed a change onstage and behind the bar. “Straight, bro-y dudes,” he said, suddenly feel emboldened to return to political incorrectness. “One guy was like, ‘Oh, I can tell rape jokes again,’” said Masterson. At a comedy night he performs at in Los Angeles, a pro-Trump bartender also told the producers of the show that they “can’t do any anti-Trump material,” he said.

Added Masterson, “It’s definitely an aggressive time to be a comedian.”

But the aggression isn’t limited solely to Trump supporters, according to Marcella Arguello, a Latina comedian in Los Angeles. “I thought that conservative people would be a problem,” she said. “What I’m getting is very sensitive liberal audiences.”

At a recent show, Arguello said, she was doing a bit about the safety pins that Americans began to wear after the election in solidarity with marginalized peoples. Part of the bit involves imagining her immigrant mother, who is not aware of the fad, being harassed by a man wearing a safety pin at Target. But she wasn’t able to finish her joke before another woman in the crowd who appeared to also be Latina spoke up.

“She was like, ‘You shouldn’t be letting these people laugh at immigrants not having access to the internet,” Arguello said. “I was like, ‘Are you kidding me right now?’” Arguello, who admitted she doesn’t deal well with hecklers, then jokingly asked if the heckler wanted to fight.

The anger shows no signs of dying anytime soon. But the show will go on. And so, Peter Kim, the comedian who left Second City last month, told the Chicago Reader this week that he was returning to Second City for a new show based entirely on working with the crowd.

“I wanted to be in the same place where the same people might come so I could have a chance to talk back and shut down hecklers if they have hate speech,” he said. “I think the key story is that these hateful people were out there anyway. It’s not specific to Second City — clearly, after the election you see them coming out in droves.”

DISPATCH: Becoming Aware With Lisa Garr

2015-07-02-1435851440-9077635-RewireMe3.jpg

In NYC to share her book, Becoming Aware: How to Repattern Your Brain and Revitalize Your Life, Lisa Garr recently offered her story, insight, and inspiration on how to live your best life at a truly experiential workshop hosted by Rose Caiola of Rewire Me.

If you’re not familiar with the story that would change the trajectory of her life, here’s the short version: A competitive mountain bike racer, Garr found herself severely dehydrated during a race in triple digit temperatures as her body wasn’t absorbing the water she drank. While riding on top of a mountain, she passed out. Bike and body flying through the air, helmet cracked and shattered, body rolling downhill, Garr eventually finds herself in a place absent of pain. “We’re so vastly interconnected,” she says, describing the pure euphoria she felt in this out-of-body-experience. “We’re missing the biggest piece which is total, complete, utter inner connectedness.” The cosmic giggle is, whether you mean “inner” or “inter,” it’s true either way.

2015-07-02-1435851474-6108928-RewireMe4.jpg

While cynics may attribute this realization to the severe accident, it seems natural to me that a flip side of major pain is massive clarity. As Garr embarked on the journey to restore her right prefrontal cortex, she absorbed, embodied, and lived the tools and techniques that allowed her to “effectively heal my brain.” If you see her conduct interviews on TV, online, or at conferences you’d never guess that this woman could hardly speak after her bike accident, let alone have captivating conversations with leaders in health, science, and wellness that serve a huge audience.

So how do we optimize our lives? How can we repattern our brain to create what we desire? Below’s a taste of the exercises Garr’s used to reboot her brain, which can inspire you no matter if you intend to do a complete overhaul or just fine-tune and reinforce existing neuro-pathways.

Visualization Exercise
Bring to mind what you want to create. This could be related to health, fitness, body image, beauty, family/relationships, work, financial abundance, art, creativity, spirituality… Walk into this image with all five senses. Full immerse yourself. Feel it, taste it, touch it, see it, smell it. Neurons that fire together, wire together. This multi-sensory experience will create fresh neuro-pathways.

Journey of Consciousness
A nice tool to pull your vision into the here and now is to see it as if it is happening. “Use your imagination! Play! It’s all possible. You’re playing in a new arena in your brain. It’s fun!” Garr states. The beauty of neuroplasticity is that we can continue to shape our brains. Learn a new language, pick up a new exercise, anchor into your most sacred vision. Make your brain your best friend by molding it to support your thriving.

2015-07-02-1435851514-784937-RewireMe.jpg

Your Dream Fully Realized
Garr shared a wonderful meditation/embodied visualization that involved a gorgeous glass-encased, golden elevator with soft-close doors, and other magical features. I’ll let her elaborate on this exercise in a future interview… For now, know that you can create your future in your brain and let its essence, the vibration of your dream, sink into your every cell. That’s what I’d call whole-body plasticity. Once you’ve created those new neuro-pathways, your mind will start to scan for them, looking to find matching vibrations.

Action
Visualizing and embodying whatever you desire in one thing but you have to put in inspired action to bring your dreams to fruition. Do the necessary work; speak it; write it; share it. Viscerally feel it. You create best when you’re filled with 100 percent of your energy.

2015-07-02-1435851555-2330922-RewireMe5.jpg

Formula for Success
Story + Passion + Giving Back = Success. Garr certainly practices what she preaches; her own goal is to uplevel the consciousness of humanity through media. Looking at the discerning buffet of her book, radio, TV, and online shows, it seems she’s right on target. Garr’s ultimate tip for you is this: Combine the story of your life with your career and giving back.

Becoming Aware is a beautifully interactive book. Look for the QR codes that’ll open up guided exercises for extra support. Sprinkled throughout you’ll find Awarisms — handy gems of wisdom. Moreover, Garr shares her nutritional plans as well as inspirational photos with family and friends (many of whom I’m sure you’ll recognize). Dive in. Live in joy. Stay aware!

Is Blake Lively Becoming a Designer?

It seems that beyond inspiring a whole lot of sexy-chic outfits, Blake Lively‘s pregnancy also got her thinking about the next professional skill she’d like to add to her CV. Sources are suggesting that the actress might introduce a range of children’s clothing and products to her e-commerce website, Preserve.

There’s currently a small children’s section on the site, though it’s not hard to imagine Blake would want to blow it out with more offerings once she gets into mommy mode at home. Until her designs hit, you can shop cheeky pieces like this bunny coat.

You’re Engaged, Now What? Six Steps to Take Right After Becoming Engaged

Congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time in your life and you don’t want to be stressed out BUT you probably are. You’ve been waiting for him to propose and now that he has, everything is coming at you at high-speed. Many of my clients say that they had an idea of what they wanted their wedding to look like but once they got engaged, all of that went out the window. The engagement period really should be a time to celebrate this next step in your relationship, not a time to be consumed with planning and stress. Here are six planning steps to take within the first month of your engagement that will help take away some of that stress.

1. Pick a date or two. Picking a date gives you direction in the beginning. You may have a venue in mind that you’ve always wanted to be married in but they may be booked on your date. If you’re flexible you may find more success in booking a venue.

2. Sit down with your fiancé and put together a budget. You won’t know exactly what things cost immediately but come up with a number that you are comfortable with spending. If the average cost of a wedding in your city is $ 55,000 but you can only spend $ 30,000, that’s your number. Now is not the time to try to keep up with the Joneses.

3. Hire a wedding planner. It kills me when I hear people say that a friend of a friend or their aunt who “does events” is going to handle their wedding. There is so much more to planning a wedding than fluffing your dress right before you walk down the aisle. We’re here to ensure that you make it TO the aisle! Figure out what the most important things are that you are looking for in a planner and while you’re interviewing, keep those them in mind. Don’t hire someone based solely on their Instagram account or their pricing alone. Ask for references and talk to their previous clients. If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, try hiring an amateur. Trust me on this one.

4. Find a venue. Your venue will help you determine your guest list. If your dream venue can only hold 100 people but you have at least 200 that you want to invite, keep looking. This part takes a little bit of time because you have to make appointments to see each venue. Put together a list of 3 that you like and start there.

5. Make a guest list. I always tell my clients to make 3 lists. Your first consists of your family and friends who you would put into your lifeboat if you were on a sinking ship. You have limited space on this lifeboat so make those people count. Second, make a list of the people who you would add onto your boat if there were a few extra seats. These are cousins who you talk to at Christmas time and that’s it. You’d like to see them at your wedding but if they aren’t there, it won’t ruin your day. The final list consists of those coworkers who you see 40 hours a week and commiserate about work with but you wouldn’t pick up the phone to call them after 5:00pm. Remember that you have to feed each guest and that’s where a huge chunk of your budget will go. If you wouldn’t pay $ 100 for their meal, don’t invite them. Making a guest list should be taken that seriously.

6. Designate a wedding-free time-zone. As involved as your fiancé may be, he doesn’t want to talk about wedding details every day for the next year. No one wants to do that, not even you. There really isn’t a need to talk about your wedding every day during your engagement. That’s why you hire a planner to handle all of the little details so that your relationship doesn’t become all about your wedding. Remember that you still have to take care of your relationship.

Becoming King

Becoming King

“The history books may write it Reverend King was born in Atlanta, and then came to Montgomery, but we feel that he was born in Montgomery in the struggle here, and now he is moving to Atlanta for bigger responsibilities.” — Member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, November 1959 Preacher — this simple term describes the twenty-five-year-old Ph.D. in theology who arrived in Montgomery, Alabama, to become the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in 1954. His name was Martin Luther King Jr., but where did this young minister come from? What did he believe, and what role would he play in the growing activism of the civil rights movement of the 1950s? In Becoming King: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Making of a National Leader, author Troy Jackson chronicles King’s emergence and effectiveness as a civil rights leader by examining his relationship with the people of Montgomery, Alabama. Using the sharp lens of Montgomery’s struggle for racial equality to investigate King’s burgeoning leadership, Jackson explores King’s ability to connect with the educated and the unlettered, professionals and the working class. In particular, Jackson highlights King’s alliances with Jo Ann Robinson, a young English professor at Alabama State University; E. D. Nixon, a middle-aged Pullman porter and head of the local NAACP chapter; and Virginia Durr, a courageous white woman who bailed Rosa Parks out of jail after Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white person. Jackson offers nuanced portrayals of King’s relationships with these and other civil rights leaders in the community to illustrate King’s development within the community. Drawing on countless interviews and archival sources, Jackson compares King’s sermons and religious writings before, during, and after the Montgomery bus boycott. Jackson demonstrates how King’s voice and message evolved during his time in Montgomery, reflecting the shared struggles, challenges, experiences, and hopes of the people with whom he worked.

15 Minutes Of Lions In Slow Motion On A GoPro Cam Is Pure Bliss, But Are Lions Becoming Endangered?

Self-proclaimed animal behaviorist and lion whisperer, Kevin Richardson, has a controversial relationship with animals, to say the least.

Footage of his trip to Pretoria, South Africa, reveals his extremely close encounters with his lion and hyena friends, and many argue that the interactions are much too close for comfort.

Regardless of what you think about Richardson, it’s hard to deny the majesty of the big cats when they are viewed through a GoPo lens, and are in slow motion.

The camera effect makes it feel as though you are with them, and you will want to reach out to touch the animals through your screen. They just look so soft!

Richardson warns that lions may be the next endangered species because of the damage to their habitat, and hopes to use his unique relationship with them to bring attention to the fact that wildlife in Africa is suffering.

Lions are not officially listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, even though their population has dramatically decreased in a short period of time. According to a study by researchers at Duke University, lion populations in Africa have gone down by almost two-thirds over the last 50 years. The study shows that in the 1950s there were as many as 100,000 lions on the continent, but now there may be as few 32,000.

Because they are not yet recognized as endangered, the big cats are not protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and it is legal to import lion trophies and parts into the U.S.

The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is to preserve African carnivores through education, awareness and funding. The sanctuary aims to bring awareness to “the rapid decline of large carnivores in Africa due to habitat loss, human-predator conflict, unscrupulous hunting, disease and their illegal trade.”
