Jacqie Rivera Reveals the Secrets Behind Her 70-Pound Weight Loss and Transformation

Reality star Jacqie Rivera lost a whopping 70 pounds and feels as amazing as she looks. The daughter of Jenni Rivera and famous sibling shares her weight-loss journey in the new season of Universo’s reality show The Riveras, airing in March. The 27-year-old also reveals what her divorce process from the father of her children has been like and how she is adapting to her new life as a single mom.

Her transformation inspiration? “What motivated me is my children. I was starting to see that I didn’t have enough energy to be a good mom, and I wanted to be a good example,” she said about working toward a healthier lifestyle in a promotional video she shared with PEOPLE CHICA. “As you can see in my social media, I’m staying focused. I don’t work out all the time but when I can — and I’m just eating healthy. It actually makes me feel better. I just have more energy now, so I think I’m going to keep doing it.”

Jacqie — in her fuller figure “before” photo in pink dress (above) — began her metamorphosis in October 2016 by waking up at 5:30 in the morning, before her children, and doing cardio on exercise machines at home. She also said goodbye to junk food, including sodas and her favorite chili chips. Learning to eat nutritious and balanced meals and having a more active lifestyle allowed her to shed the unwanted pounds. She is now using a personal trainer to get more toned.

“It’s sometimes overwhelming doing everything I do,” she admitted. “Being a single mom of three and working for my mom’s nonprofit organization and even trying to pursue my own dreams and goals. It’s all balance. And staying close to God because that’s the only way I can stay sane.”

She also opens up about divorce from Mike Campos after five years of marriage in the upcoming third season of the reality show, which also stars her siblings, Chiquis Rivera, Johnny Lopez, Jenicka Lopez and Mikey Marin. “On The Riveras you guys are going to be able to see me in my whole process of being separated and trying to make it work and then finally going through the divorce process. I’m trying to stay positive. It’s hard, it’s a big change, but that’s life and I have to keep pushing. I have three kids to live for so I got to stay strong,” she added.

Jacqie admits that being a mother has helped her understand her own mom, the late Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, better. “I think my kids are my life-savers. Without them, I think I’d be completely crazy. I’m not a perfect mom and now I understand my mom so much more. I think I used to be hard on her and now I can understand what it’s like to be a single mom,” she admitted. “I don’t want to pretend that I’m a perfect mom. I want them to see me for what I am and show them that no, we are never going to be perfect, but we can fight to be better, and they are the reason that I’m better.”

The Family Behind Weatherproof Launches The Very Warm Project

Cousins Shai and David Peyser are helping their family, which owns outerwear brand Weatherproof, establish a bigger presence in the contemporary category.
They have partnered to introduce The Very Warm, a men’s and women’s outerwear line that will launch for fall. Each season, the brand will partner with artists to incorporate one-of-a-kind artwork into its products.
“I came into the business a couple of years ago and we decided to do something that was art inspired,” Shai Peyser said. “We wanted to start a conversation with outerwear and a way to do that is with the lining. I personally have a love for art and street art so we are incorporating that into the lining.”
For the first season, The Very Warm has tapped artists Trav, Jasper Wong, Morgan Lappin and Caleb Troy to create pieces for the lining. The collection includes coach jackets, reversible bombers and quilted parkas and retails from $ 189 to $ 375.
The line is being sold at Nordstrom, and beginning in October, the brand will host a three-month pop-up shop within Odin’s SoHo location in New York. The pop-up will include events every few weeks hosted by artists who have collaborated with the brand.

Mika Brzezinski Reveals True Story Behind President Trump’s ‘Face-Lift’ Tweet: He Begged for the Name of My Doctor

Mika Brzezinski is setting the record straight about President Trump‘s tweet regarding her alleged face-lift — which wasn’t a face-lift at all.

In a candid new interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, the Morning Joe co-host reveals that she got a procedure to tighten the skin under her neck — and explains why the president knew about it.

Brzezinski says she started laughing when her coworker Willie Geist first showed her Trump’s widely derided tweets, in which he claimed she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when she and her fiancé and co-host Joe Scarborough visited the Trumps at Mar-a-Lago around New Year’s Eve.

“I said … ‘S–t. I kind of wanted to keep that to myself,’ ” she said of the procedure.

“I had a turkey neck. My mom told me to get it done,” she explained. “I was FaceTiming all my friends, telling them to get it done, that it wasn’t so bad.”

RELATED VIDEO: Exclusive: Natasha Stoynoff Speaks Out: ‘I Don’t Want Women to Feel Afraid’

Brzezinski said that she told Melania Trump about the procedure when the TV hosts stopped by Mar-a-Lago on New Year’s Eve. But it was the then-president-elect who was impressed.

“The irony of it all is that Donald kept saying, ‘That’s incredible. You can’t even tell. Who did it? Who did it?’ He kept asking for the name of the doctor,” Brzezinski recalls. “He literally asked 10 times. ‘Is he down here? Who is he?’ ”

A White House spokesman declined to comment on the subject.

Trump’s Twitter attack on Brzezinski — in which he also called her “crazy” and “low I.Q.” — isn’t the first one she’s been subjected to. Last summer, Trump tweeted that she was “a neurotic and not very bright mess!”

WATCH THIS: People at the White House: The Final Interview with The Obamas

Brzezinski and Scarborough told Vanity Fair that they actually mended fences with Trump at the time after his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, brokered a meeting with the four of them.

She said Trump even apologized for the tweet.

“Jared said we should end the meeting right then and there, because it was one of the only times he had heard him apologize,” Scarborough said.

This time, however, the couple said they are not holding out hope for an apology.

Dan Harmon Finally Reveals Reason Behind ‘Rick And Morty’ Delays

It’s been roughly an eternity since the last season of “Rick and Morty” (or more accurately, roughly under two years).

The delay for the third season has gone on so long that co-creator Dan Harmon is now worried that fans are speculating the Adult Swim’s animated show won’t be coming back at all. “Rick and Morty” debuted the season three premiere on April Fool’s, but since then there’s essentially been radio silence on the subsequent episodes.

So to quell online rumors that he’s been fighting with co-creator Justin Roiland or that the show is doomed, Harmon wrote a statement truncated into tweets this morning. This apparently isn’t like the 2012 situation with Harmon’s former show, “Community,” when the NBC network and Sony ousted him, leaving a carcass of the television program to decay through a horrid Harmon-less season.

Harmon and Roiland are just taking forever to perfect this thing.

“But the truth in this case is so very boring,” wrote Harmon. “I will put it to you as objectively as I can … The reason S3 took long is because it took long to write, because it was S3 of a show that we were scared to make worse than S2 or S1.”

Fair enough. It’s still entirely unclear when this wonderful show is coming back though.

Below is Harmon’s long, “hungover thread” on Twitter:

Tim Cook ‘Reveals’ Who Is Really Behind Donald Trump’s Late Night Tweets

Tim Cook used part of his address to graduating students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday to poke fun at President Donald Trump.

The Apple CEO began by saying he’d never figured out how students at the university in Cambridge pulled off their spectacular course-end pranks ― such as the placing of a propeller atop the campus’ Great Dome.

“Or how you’ve obviously taken over the president’s Twitter account,” Cook added. “I can tell college students are behind it because most of the tweets happen at 3 a.m.”

Cook went on to deliver some serious advice to the class of 2017, and the effect that the online world may have on their lives.

“The internet has enabled so much and empowered so many. But it can also be a place where the basic rules of decency are suspended and pettiness and negativity thrive,” Cook said.

He encouraged students not to let “the noise knock you off course” or to “get caught up on the trivial aspects of life.”

“Don’t listen to the trolls, and for God’s sake don’t become one,” Cook added. “Measure your impact on humanity not in likes, but in the lives you touch. Not in popularity, but in the people you serve.”

The Funny Story Behind How The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Album Got Its Name

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” could have been a totally different album altogether, were it not for a simple misunderstanding.

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has revealed how the title and concept of the British band’s eighth album actually came to him during an airplane flight with roadie Mal Evans.

McCartney said in an interview posted to his website on May 25 that the idea behind the record, which celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday, all emanated from him mishearing Evans asking him to “pass the salt and pepper.”

“I thought he said Sergeant Pepper,” said McCartney. “I went, ‘Oh! Wait a minute, that’s a great idea!’”

After having “a laugh about it,” the 74-year-old musician said he immediately “started thinking about Sergeant Pepper as a character.”

“I thought it would be a very interesting idea for us to assume alter egos for this album we were about to make,” he added.

The rest, as they say, is music history.

Jason Derulo, Antonio Brown Go Behind the Scenes at LVL XIII Fall Campaign

Jason Derulo walks the talk. He settles into a director’s chair to eat poached salmon and asparagus (which he has ordered for his small posse as well) at the glam station before the fall shoot for his and Antonio Brown’s LVL XIII label commences in Los Angeles.

PEOPLE’s Jess Cagle Takes You Behind the Scenes of Oscars Sunday

It’s finally Oscar Sunday, and PEOPLE is taking fans right to the center of the action.

Jess Cagle, Editor-in-Chief of PEOPLE and Editorial Director, Time Inc. Style & Entertainment Group, is prepping for ABC’s official Oscar pre-show, Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live from the Red Carpet. The pre-show, which is hosted by Good Morning America anchors Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer and Michael Strahan, will feature Cagle as a contributor alongside Marie Claire‘s Nina Garcia and Vanity Fair’s Krista Smith.

Of course, one can’t head to the biggest night in movies without a full stomach. Cagle and his date (and partner) Matt Whitney, writer for the TV show Timeless, grab a bite to eat in West Hollywood before heading to the Dolby Theatre for the night’s festivities.

Cagle also offered a view of the cloudy skies above Hollywood, where rain is predicted to threaten the awards show’s red carpet. Luckily, he shared yesterday that a rain structure is already in place to keep celebrities (and their fashion choices) protected from any unfavorable weather conditions.

After a good meal, the final step before heading to the Academy Awards is looking the part. Cagle assisted Whitney in getting picture-perfect for the red carpet, giving a tutorial on how to successfully tie a bow tie.

Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live from the Red Carpet airs on ABC at 7 p.m. ET. The Oscars themselves will air at 8:30 p.m. ET and The Oscars: All Access live stream from the red carpet and backstage will begin at 7 p.m. ET.

For more Oscars fun, watch the PEOPLE & EW Red Carpet Live Oscars pre-show on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on the People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN). Go to PEOPLE.com/PEN, or download the app on your favorite device. Then watch our Red Carpet Fashion Wrap-Up after the Oscars!

But before you do any of that, be sure to get your own Oscars ballot to play along during the show.

Meet The Extraordinary Husband-Wife Duo Behind ‘Curious George’

Curious George is one of the most recognizable characters in literary history. Children far and wide grew up getting to know the playful monkey, perpetually embroiled in mischief. But those same kids who enjoyed the never-ending antics of a banana-loving protagonist were probably less familiar with the other name emblazoned on the Curious George books: H. A. Rey.

The initials stand for Hans Augusto. But they represent only one half of the duo that actually brought George to life. Margret Rey, Hans’ wife, was equally responsible for the seven books that make up the original Curious George series. Hans was in charge of illustrations, Margret the writing; both helped generate the many ideas and plot points that amounted to stories like Curious George Takes a Job and Curious George Flies a Kite.

A new documentary raising funds on Kickstarter aims to bring the details of Hans and Margret’s relationship to light. “Monkey Business: The Curious Adventures of George’s Creators” hopes fans of George will be fans of the late Hans and Margret, too. And a brief dive into their lives proves the wife-husband team has a history well worth learning about.

According to Louise Borden, author of The Journey That Saved Curious Georgethe Reys were both born in Germany to Jewish families. They began dating while Hans was traveling through Brazil. They married in 1935 and moved to France shortly after. However, they were forced to leave their then-home of Paris in June of 1940, along with five million others fleeing encroaching Nazi forces. So the story goes, Hans and Margret left the city on bicycles they built from spare parts, eventually making their way to a ship that brought them to the United States. Once there, they settled in New York City ― a curious manuscript in tow.

At that point, George was not exactly new. Though his books were first published in the U.S. in 1941 under the enduring title Curious George, the monkey himself is technically French. And originally named Fifi (Zozo in England). Fifi began as a simple cartoon Hans sketched, but ballooned into a full-fledged character when a French publisher suggested he turn it into a children’s book. Margret and Hans based most of George’s adventures on their own lives as children and adults.

Over the next 25 years, the monkey’s ascent to children’s literary fame as “George” would come to represent one of the most inspiring stories of immigrant success. Over 30 million copies of the Curious George books have been sold worldwide since, published in 16 different languages. What many consider to be a staple of American children’s literature is actually an international phenomenon born of migration and survival.

“Monkey Business” filmmaker Ema Ryan Yamazaki ― who grew up reading the Reys’ books in Japan ― is “obsessed” with Curious George. During research for her documentary, she visited the University of Southern Mississippi, making her way through the 300 boxes of archival materials that make up the Rey collection there. From wartime journals, personal photos, unpublished George artwork, and correspondence, she sifted through the preserved items, searching for the real story behind the H.A. Rey name. The real story behind George.

“As someone that was impacted by Curious George during my childhood, I’ve seen that it’s not just me who feels this connection to him, but the world,” Yamazaki explained in an interview with The Creator’s Project. “And not just children ― George has had an impact on multiple generations. He’s been around for 75 years, something about this monkey has transcended cultures and time to mold our childhood.”

Lay Lee Ong, literary executor of the Rey estate, has professed support for Yamazaki’s film, as have a number of other Curious George–related experts. (For the record, so has famed documentarian Alex Gibney.) Yamazaki hopes her Kickstarter campaign will help pay for the intensive animation featured in the film and the work of lead animator Jacob Kafka, among other things.

Check out more of the Reys’ story on Kickstarter. If Yamazaki raises her intended $ 175,000, fans of Curious George will have a lot to look forward to.

This Is The Actual Inspiration Behind Those Crazy Outfits At The Met Gala

Monday night’s Met Gala left onlookers speechless with the elaborate gowns and overall commitment to the theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

This year the annual exhibit, which opens up to the public at the Metropolitan Museum of Art shortly after the eve of the gala, examines the relationship between hand-made and machine made garments over time. The result? An even bigger display of mind-blowing gowns than those usually seen on the red carpet.

The museum’s website explains that the exhibit, which features over 150 ensembles, will “address the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production.”

There are feathers! There is intricate design! And if you thought the train on Zoe Saldana’s dress was long, well:

Enough said.

Feast your eyes on the gorgeous gowns below, and if you’re in New York, be sure to visit the exhibit, which runs May 5 to August 14.

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER”I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side-the Communist side-of the Iron Curtain.” Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Ss shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé’s Street Style Transformation

by EDWARD BARSAMIAN

“She wears the crown for all the work that she’s put into the industry,” says Beyoncé’s personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. “But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman.”

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey’s place in fashion royalty–one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there’s another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old’s Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We’ve also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte–courtesy of Akers. “I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they’re doing,” Akers told us recently, adding, “and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London.”

It’s been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star’s renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. “I wanted to be a little more experimental with color,” says Akers, adding, “like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She’s such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color.”

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that’s sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. “High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment,” explains Akers. “I can get a skirt for $ 50 in matte jersey. It’s going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that’s $ 795.” Akers says the secret to her A-list client’s style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. “That’s the reward,” says Akers matter-of-factly. “That she’s enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident.” How else, after all, to run the world?

A Collection of Four Stories by Gemma Parkes, Eve McFadden, Jocelyn Modo, Jacqueline George. Authors are a talkative bunch, especially now we can communicate online and spend far too much time on social media. Time that would be better spent writing, no doubt. Still, chatting strikes up new ideas and four authors from Yellow Silk Dreams have decided to create an anthology. Completely separated by geography and culture in the USA, UK and Australia, the four of us sat down at our computers and wrote stories on the same theme – The Castle. The results are here, and I think you will agree that they could not be more different. I will not even attempt to describe the stories – just read on and I hope you have fun. If you do (and I’m sure you will), you can find more books by these authors at their website and at the Yellow Silk Dreams home page. Good reading! The Authors: Gemma Parkes – Scarlet I’ve been writing fiction for several years, I used to write romance but my stories gradually became sexier until eventually that’s all I wanted to write! I also read profusely. You will find my stories available to download on Amazon/Kindle, All romance, Xcite and Smashwords. I love travelling to exotic places, taking in the culture and, of course the weather. I love eating good food and trying out lots of different dishes. My current favourite is Thai, but if you think you can persuade me otherwise, go ahead. I have some amazing friends I love spending time with. Friendship is so important, don’t you agree? Man Behind ‘Oprah,’ ‘Dr. Phil’ Remembered At Star-Studded Memorial Service

A who’s who of Hollywood, music and politics gathered last night at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to celebrate the life of Michael King, the much-beloved syndication king behind wildly successful shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Roseanne and Dr. Phil. King passed away suddenly March 27 at age 67 from complications of pneumonia.

Former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Norman Lear, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg and Sugar Ray Leonard, among others, remembered King as an “intellectual” but “street-smart” businessman, an outsized personality, a generous philanthropist and exceptionally kind and devoted friend, brother, husband, father and uncle. Kenny G, Michael Bolton and David Foster performed at the invitation-only event, held by King’s wife, Jena and children Ali, Audrey, Teddy and Jesse.

As Clinton remarked later in the program, referencing a poem by William Wordsworth, King’s “last best hope of his great good life were the unforgettable acts of kindness, love and laughter. We are all here because we basked in his embrace.”

White floral arrangements and candles in tall glass votives set an elegant and peaceful scene as bagpipes welcomed 400-plus guests, including Bobby Kennedy Jr., Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin, Don Henley and Joe Walsh from The Eagles, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, producer Lawrence Bender and actors Tommy Chong, Paul Reiser and Lorraine Bracco.

A bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” marked the start of the service, after which Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson from St. Monica’s Church in Santa Monica, California, led those gathered in prayer.

King’s children then came on stage, the oldest three giving emotional, at times tearful, speeches about their love for their dad — and his love for them. Eldest daughter and singer Ali said King was “the funniest person I know.” Son Teddy, a student at the University of Southern California, called his father his “best friend.” Teenage daughter Audrey welcomed guests and spoke on behalf of her mother, who was seated in the audience, then read two searing poems she wrote herself, leaving many attendees in tears.

In one, titled “Poem For My Mom,” she wrote:

A love so intangible, is that much
More alluring-
That much more passionate.
When you feel the cold wind
Just know it is him kissing your neck,
Teasing your senses,
Reminding you
He loves you.

Teddy introduced the former president with an anecdote of a trip he took with his dad and Clinton to South Africa, where the trio had gone to do charity work and visit Nelson Mandela. A known jokester, King impersonated Clinton, who had fallen asleep in the jeep. The account elicited laughs from the audience.

“Teddy, thanks for that wonderful story, I would far rather be impersonated by your father than anyone I can think of,” Clinton began, to laughter. “I will say this: We have this vast King clan here, and we had the bagpipers playing, and I thought, ‘It is so Michael King, ending with a flourish, an invasion of the Skirball Center by the Irish Catholics.'”

Clinton continued on a serious note in light of the Charleston shooting on June 18.

“Everywhere in the world is bedeviled by people who are the opposite of Michael King. People who think all that matters is our differences,” Clinton said. “We have more refugees than any time since World War II. It was a terrible, terrible thing that happened in South Carolina yesterday. Michael King is the polar opposite of all that.”

Robert, King’s brother and partner in King World Productions, followed the former president’s remarks, saying his younger brother “would not want us to mourn his death; he’d want us to celebrate.” Older brother Richie offered a few, heartbroken words about the loss of a national treasure, his business partner and his best friend of 67 years. “That’s all I can say,” he said, choking back tears.

Kenny G performed, dedicating his song, “Innocence,” to the family. And tributes, tears and laughter continued.

Collaborator and producer Jeff Wald joked, “I was worried about going on after President Clinton — then I realized I couldn’t do worse than George Bush.”

Producer Norman Lear panned, “There are people all over this town who would die to put a crowd like this together.” Confessing that he had thought King was Jewish throughout their 30-year friendship until just before the memorial service, Lear said, “Jewish. Irish. It doesn’t matter. Michael was the definition of the word ‘mensch.'”

The speeches were interspersed by video tributes from those unable to attend, including Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg and Sugar Ray Leonard. In hers, Oprah Winfrey offered her condolences and shared photos and memories of King. “Here was a man who really knew how to live. He didn’t just live big — he lived huge,” she said.

Major philanthropists to many causes, King and his wife donated to friend, lawyer and speaker Robert Shapiro’s foundation to combat drug addiction, and to Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen’s Oceana foundation, the largest ocean-conservation charity in the world.

“I really felt Michael got to experience the joy of what it means to be human,” Danson said. “He got to love and be loved.”

The event concluded with musical performances by Michael Bolton and producer David Foster, who sent the crowd off on a buoyant note: “Let’s do this right. Everybody get up, scream, shout, and stomp your feet so wherever he is, he can hear us right now.”

Bryce Dallas Howard’s High-Heel Workout From Behind the Scenes at Jurassic World

Much ado has been made about Bryce Dallas Howard‘s high heels from Jurassic World—specifically, the fact that she wears a pair the entire time, running from dinosaurs and all. Costar Chris Pratt parodied her running, and Howard savvily answered questions about it at the film’s premiere, telling reporters “it’s way better than running barefoot in a jungle, I’ll tell you that.”

bryce-dallas-howard-costume-jurassic-world-movie

Howard was the one who green-lit the Sam Edelman heels after hurting her ankle while shooting a take in platform wedge sneakers that the crew had spray-painted to look like nude heels (which must have been an intriguing look too). After the heel decision had been made, Howard told People she “fixated on having the strongest ankles imaginable” and made a wooden platform contraption specifically for working out her feet.

“I’d put my foot on it and do calf raises and then stay on my tippy-toe and do squats. Then I’d turn perpendicular and exercise each side of my foot. Just to practice the stabilizing muscles.”

Exercise kinda like you’re prepping to run from dinos with this squat and calf-raise combo:

The Team Behind ‘Batkid Begins’ Shares Behind-The-Scenes Stories From Their Heartwarming Documentary

In 2013, the Make-A-Wish Foundation made 5-year-old leukemia patient Miles Scott’s dreams come true when they turned San Francisco into Gotham City and transformed Scott into “Batkid.” Alongside a fully-grown Batman partner, Batkid saved a damsel in distress, brought two super-villains to justice and captured the hearts of the thousands who turned up to see his crusade in person and the millions who watched online.

And on June 26, the incredible story comes to the big screen with the documentary “Batkid Begins.” On Wednesday, HuffPost Live’s Ricky Camilleri spoke to the team behind the film and the wish itself to get the behind-the-scenes story of how it all went down.

The documentary chronicles the increasingly elaborate preparation for granting Scott’s wish. Patricia Wilson, the CEO Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, said she initially hoped for about 200 people to show up for support. When that turned into more than 25,000, organizers worried all the attention might be too much for a 5-year-old. But when the pressure was on, Bakid never hesitated for a moment.

“I tell you what, the first time he saw that costume, he just started stripping right down to his Batman underwear and put that costume on,” Wilson said. “We put the hood on and I said, ‘Who are you?’ He goes, ‘I’m Batman!’ And I thought, ‘Okay, we’ve got a real Batman here.'”

“Batkid Begins” is in select theaters June 26. Our advice: bring tissues.

It’s a quiet Thursday morning in New York City, and everyone is half-laughing as the instructor helps individuals with their form between encouraging water breaks.

With celebrity clientele like Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss and Chrissy Teigan, it’s hard to believe that ModelFIT opened its flagship studio, complete with delicate flower vases and Diptyque candles, less than a year and a half ago.

It all began a few years ago when Vanessa Packer, who founded the healthy lifestyle website bonberi, started working with personal trainer Justin Gelband. Gelband, who’s known for his work with models Miranda Kerr, Irina Shayk, Erin Heatherton and more, had the fitness thing down. But Packer, who is all about maintaining a healthy diet, meditating and getting enough sleep, was trying to help him get his health on track in other ways.

While she was teaching him to limit energy drinks and incorporate green juices into his diet, he asked her to work with some his clients. Soon enough, the duo started talking about combining forces in a larger way.

“Once we became friends, we started talking about the possibility of working together — doing what I was doing with the nutrition stuff, and what he was doing with the fitness stuff,” Packer told The Huffington Post. “We wanted people to get a personal training feeling in an intimate class setting. From the inception of that thought and that plan, we opened two years later.”

vanessa and justin

Vanessa Packer and Justin Gelband opened ModelFIT’s flagship studio on Bowery in New York City on February 25, 2014.

So, what makes people go crazy over ModelFIT? At $ 40 a class, ModelFIT isn’t cheap, especially for us non-model folks. But after giving it a try, we have to admit that it was a solid workout. Although there were jumping jacks, ankle weights, arm, ab and leg exercises involved, perhaps the best part was how little huffing, puffing and sweating the hour entailed.

According to Packer, this lack of huffing and puffing is because ModelFIT’s whole mission is about living a balanced life. If you’re a regular at ModelFIT, you’re probably eating well and getting enough sleep. Because of that, ModelFit encourages you to slow down and take your workout one step at a time, resulting in a lean, toned body that doesn’t push you to your physical limit.

Indeed, research shows that sweating buckets is hardly the be-all and end-all of fitness. While cardio is certainly important and we’re all about a good sweat sesh, there’s a lot more to it. “Being in shape means improving health, endurance, and building core muscles, all of which you can do without sweating,” certified trainer Craig Ballantyne told Women’s Health.

As for what makes the actual workout unique, it’s all about the small muscles. “We really take the time to focus on all those little muscles that in everyday life you don’t really use or even know about,” Packer explained. “Another thing we focus on is not killing yourself to get results. Our prescription for being fit and being well is not to work out for two hours a day and eat whatever you want. Our workout is a mindful workout. You have to think about the muscle you want to feel and the movement you’re doing.”

Will ModelFIT expand all over the globe? With the success it’s seen over the past year, it certainly seems like a possibility. But for now, Packer is focused on making New York’s flagship studio the best it can be while working with Gelband to spread the word about ModelFIT’s unique, small muscle-focused workout. Want to give it a test run? Try ModelFIT at home with this 20-minute total body workout instructed by Packer herself.

26 Stunning Photos Of Women’s Tattoos — And The Stories Behind Them

Tattoo artist Kat Von D once said, “I am a canvas of my experiences, my story is etched in lines and shading, and you can read it on my arms, my legs, my shoulders, and my stomach.”

Tattoos are stories — marked in ink and blood — quietly traveling around us all day on shoulder blades and wrists and across entire backs. These stories can be powerful, uplifting and even heart-wrenching. They can symbolize a life-changing event, they can be in memory of someone special, or they might exist simply because they’re beautiful.

We spoke with 26 women who shared photographs of their tattoos and the varied reasons they got them. Some tattoos came out of heartbreak, others from moments of celebration.

Here are 26 gorgeous images of women’s tattoos and the stories behind each of them:

“Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands:” The Inspiration Behind the Novel

2015-05-22-1432296362-180571-img_5138.jpg

It’s one of those classic, absolutely reasonable questions–that is, alas, as impossible to answer briefly as the meaning of life. But I am asked it often. All novelists are.

Where do your ideas come from?

The glib answer–always offered with a smile–is this: “Macy’s.”

The reality is that each of my 17 novels sprang from a very different seed and grew in a very different fashion. My most recent novel, “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands,” is a case in point.

Emily Shepard, the 17-year-old Vermonter who narrates the book, was born in Beirut–or, at the very least, she was conceived there. It was December 2012, and I had arrived in the city while on a seven-day speaking tour in Lebanon. My plane landed around 3:30 in the afternoon, which my body clock adamantly told me was really 10:30 at night. I went out to dinner with my hosts from one of the universities, and returned to my hotel around 11 p.m.–at about the time I would be rising if I were back home in Vermont. I had slept on the plane, but not very much. I was exhausted and knew I should go right to bed, since the next day was going to begin with a breakfast meeting.

But I didn’t go to sleep, because I had started reading a novel on the flight and had to finish it. It was riveting. The book? Emma Donoghue’s “Room.” It wasn’t simply the plot that held me fast, as taut as it is; it was the narrator. As a novelist, I was dazzled by the authenticity of the voice Donoghue had created for her five-year-old male storyteller. That’s right, a little boy named Jack shares with us the wrenching, adult story of his and his mother’s imprisonment in a shed, and his mother’s desperate attempt to save them both.

I finished the novel around two in the morning in Beirut, and knew I wanted my next novel to be a first-person tale with a voice that genuine and unexpected. I had no idea, however, who that storyteller would be. An important detail, I know.

Ten days later I was back in my beloved 802. (We have just one area code here in Vermont: 802.) I went to lunch with a friend of mine, Annie Ramniceanu, a therapist who at the time was working with teens in trouble. She told me how a couple of homeless kids–teens who were falling through the system–had built igloos against the Lake Champlain cold out of trash bags filled with wet, frozen leaves, and I knew instantly the novel I wanted to write.

The very idea of a teen girl living alone in one of those igloos broke my heart. That image haunted me–and spurred me on.

And I knew my narrator. I knew Emily Shepard was a cutter and Oxycontin addict, and an aspiring poet with a girl crush on Emily Dickinson. She was a homeless kid and an orphan trying desperately to keep it together after a Fukushima-scale meltdown of Vermont’s lone nuclear plant.

Most of my novels begin very much like this: an inspiration. An anecdote. An unexpected synaptic connection.

Now, “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands” is not the first time I’ve had a female narrator share with my readers a story. “Midwives,” “Trans-Sister Radio,” “Secrets of Eden,” and “The Sandcastle Girls” had female narrators, too.

But, as I will reveal in my post here next week, this was the first time I found myself texting my teenage daughter for hipster-speak synonyms for “hookup” and “stoned.”

Stay tuned.

(The paperback of “Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands” arrives this Tuesday, on May 26.)

Pregnancy Style Advice Your Mom Definitely Didn’t Hear, Courtesy of the Blogger Behind Pink Peonies

To me, there’s no greater test of true style than pregnancy. It’s when a woman either digs in and really embraces what she loves to wear or doesn’t, pulling on a whole lot of this-will-hide-the-bump options. Blogger Rach Parcell is the force behind Pink Peonies and is expecting her firstborn sometime soon. She’s also definitely one of those ladies who hasn’t let her new curves confuse her style.

“I thought I would wear a lot of flowy, loose tops with skinny jeans, but I quickly learned that a form-fitted silhouette that has some stretch to it is by far the most comfortable and flattering,” she told me about her approach to maternity dressing. “I feel the most confident in something that shows off my bump.” She did decide to invest in two pairs of classic maternity jeans and doesn’t regret the purchase, saying she’s planning on getting more mileage out of them with future pregnancies.

pink-peonies-blogger-black-dress-yellow-saint-laurent-bag

Her blog is filled with plenty of amazing outfits, but I’ll admit I was surprised by how many recent times I spotted her rocking heels. I’ve never gone through a pregnancy, so have no personal experience to speak of, but was under the impression that pumps become more uncomfortable (and feet can swell!).

“So many women warned me that my feet would grow one size larger and that I wouldn’t be able to wear heels at all while pregnant, but I haven’t experienced that” she told me. “If anything I like to wear them more now because they elongate my legs and help to balance out the bump.”

Yoga: The Truth Behind The Posture

Yoga: The Truth Behind The Posture

Does Yoga have a religious impact? Can Yoga be practiced for physical benefits alone? Is there such a thing as Christian Yoga? These are the type of questions that the author explores in Yoga: The Truth Behind the Posture. Dr. George Alexander, who grew up in India, understands the true purpose of Yoga as only an insider can. He examines how Yoga affects the mind, emotions, and physical body of all who follow this ancient practice. He also draws from personal experiences in India, England, and America to illustrate how Yoga is used to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western belief systems-two worldviews that are totally incompatible. This well-researched book explores the significance of mantras and the differences between Hindu and Biblical teachings on the nature of God and man, life and death, meditation, prayer, and morality. It also looks at the history of Yoga from its Hindu conception in India, 5,000 years ago, to its introduction in the West, its adaptation over the years to Western culture by Hindu spiritual ambassadors, and its growing phenomenon in physical fitness.

Behind the Eight Ball

Inner-city black women open their hearts to share the pain of crack addiction and its consequences Behind the Eight Ball: Sex for Crack Cocaine Exchange and Poor Black Women documents an American tragedy that highlights the widening gap between social and economic classes. In their own words, poor black women-nameless, faceless, and marginalized by poverty-share the details of their lives before and after crack cocaine invaded their communities, each recalling the circumstances of her introduction to the drug and her first experience using sex to support her addiction. These candid interviews expose the socioeconomic changes in inner-city neighborhoods that created the perfect conditions for a crack stronghold; the crack cocaine economy’s impact on the lives of inner-city residents; and the social and familial consequences of crack addiction among poor, black women. Behind the Eight Ball: Sex for Crack Cocaine Exchange and Poor Black Women places crack addiction, crack-related prostitution and its consequences, STDs, HIV, and pregnancy into the context of the larger social issues of inner-city poverty, race, gender, and class. This unique book reveals the sex-for-crack barter system as evidence of a long-term social exclusion and systemic racism that has worked to destroy the self-image of poor black American women. The women interviewed reflect this negative image, exchanging sex for crack on a regular basis to support their addictions at the risk-and reality-of unplanned pregnancies. The baby I am carrying now, I don’t know who the father is. There are a few (men) that I had sex with around the time I got pregnant-that day. But which one it is, I don’t know who. Behind the Eight Ball: Sex for Crack Cocaine Exchange and Poor Black Women examines: why poor black women addicted to crack are disproportionately at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, and unplanned pregnancies how the social and economic characteristics of poor black communities suppo

This Hilarious Video Boils Down The Makeup Trends We Need To Leave Behind In 2014

As 2014 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the pretty moments… and the not so pretty moments of the year past.

Thankfully, YouTube vlogger and makeup artist, Jackie Aina aka Makeup Game On Point, released a video that is one of the funniest, most honest end-of-year roundups we’ve seen to date. Although she usually executes sleek tutorials on eyeshadow and more, this beauty guru gets playful (and mad real) with the makeup styles that made 2014 so… special. Yes, we’re talking about contouring (among other fads).

Check out Aina’s hilarious video above and see which beauty trends need to stay in 2014, and 2014 only. And when in doubt, remember Aina’s wise words: “Your lashes should not be able to slice a pizza in half.”

North Korea Blames U.S. For Shutting Down Its Internet, Says Obama Was Behind ‘The Interview’ Release

HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea called President Barack Obama “a monkey” and blamed the U.S. on Saturday for shutting down its Internet amid the hacking row over the comedy “The Interview.”

North Korea has denied involvement in a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures but has expressed fury over the comedy depicting an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. After Sony Pictures initially called off the release in a decision criticized by Obama, the movie has opened this week.

On Saturday, the North’s powerful National Defense Commission, the country’s top governing body led by Kim, said that Obama was behind the release of “The Interview.” It described the movie as illegal, dishonest and reactionary.

“Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest,” an unidentified spokesman at the commission’s Policy Department said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

He also accused Washington for intermittent outages of North Korea websites this week, after the U.S. had promised to respond to the Sony hack.

There was no immediate reaction from the White House on Saturday.

According to the North Korea commission’s spokesman, “the U.S., a big country, started disturbing the Internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag.”

The commission said the movie was the results of a hostile U.S. policy toward North Korea, and threatened the U.S. with unspecified consequences.

North Korea and the U.S. remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The rivals also are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. The U.S. stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against North Korean aggression.

The True Story Behind ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’

2014-12-16-RandyBrooks_HP.jpg

This story was written and performed by Randy Brooks for the live, personal storytelling series Oral Fixation (An Obsession With True Life Tales) on December 13, 2011, at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas.

The theme of the show was “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”

“Randy tells a hilarious story about his childhood Christmas spent with his idiosyncratic family and how it led to his writing ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,'” says Oral Fixation creator and director Nicole Stewart. “Read the story he wrote about those fun days, and be sure to watch the video below to see him sing his famous song! It’s our holiday gift to you.”

I’m tempted to say that when I was growing up in Kentucky in the 1950s, Christmas was a simpler affair. But of course it was simpler — I was a kid! I had no responsibility but to sit and wait for Christmas to happen. And as far as I knew, it was simple for adults, too, since I was under the impression that Santa Claus took care of everything.

But Christmas really was simpler for the male gender back then because some believed that the women would take care of all the cooking and the cleaning. After our holiday meals, the women would clear the table and disappear into the kitchen, while the men set up a card table in the living room in front of the black-and-white television. Beer and cigars appeared, and Granddaddy and his brothers — Uncle Lewis and Uncle Henry — commenced playing cards with one eye and watching football with the other.

Sometimes I’d climb up in Granddaddy’s lap, and he’d let me have a sip of his beer. He always drank either Schlitz or Oertle’s ’92. I never had to acquire a taste. I liked it right away; it tasted like Granddaddy. As he became more involved in the card game, I became more involved in the beer — until I fell asleep in his lap.

All of us grandchildren called my grandmother Dot-Dot. “Dot” was short for Dorothy. As a toddler I added a second Dot, and it stuck. The real mystery is why anyone ever called her Dorothy in the first place since her name was Katherine.

Granddaddy suffered a stroke when I was just seven. Uncle Lewis and Uncle Henry passed away around that same time. But Dot-Dot lived on into my young adulthood.

She was a funny little thing. As time thinned her hair, she took to wearing a luxurious wig of a brunette color not found in nature among women her age. A true Kentuckian, she liked her bourbon. A memory lingers of her leaving our house one night, giggling, with wig askew, and my dad asking if she was sure she was OK to drive.

This was my mom’s side of the family. I never knew my dad’s parents as well. We would pay them an obligatory visit on Christmas afternoon, and I would receive a little dress shirt and bow tie or some gift similarly repugnant to a young boy.

Granddaddy Brooks died of an overabundance of Southern cooking while I was still quite young. His widow, my dad’s mother, was a repository of ailments. My most enduring memory of her is that she would sit at the dinner table going, “Ooh… ooh… ooh. Well, honey, aren’t you going to ask me what’s wrong?”

The other fixtures around my childhood Christmas table were Great-Great-Great Cousin William and his wife, Aunt Edna. They were a colorful duo. Cousin William was vice president of a distillery (and believed in bringing his work home with him). He and Aunt Edna would have a drink or two before leaving their house, another couple at our house before dinner, and by the time we all sat down at the table, they were attacking each other like Republicans and Democrats. Cousin William liked to bait Aunt Edna by speaking ill of Sam, their dachshund. Truth be told, I think he was secretly fond of Sam, but he never failed to get a rise out of Edna by saying that he had a good mind to “slip Sam the needle.” Edna would spit out some venomous response, to which Bill would reply, “I think maybe I ought to slip you the needle, Edna!” The rest of us would laugh heartily, but nervously — never quite certain whether we were witnessing performance art or mayhem in the making.

A recurring story of Aunt Edna’s had to do with their courtship. Coming home from a date on a moonless night, the porch light was burned out, and Cousin William couldn’t locate the keyhole to open the door. Aunt Edna said, “I told him, Bill, if that thing had hair around it I bet you could find it!”

But back to Dot-Dot. If memory serves, she passed away in 1982. My mother tells me that Dot-Dot was a harsh taskmaster, a former school teacher who expected perfection from her children. But as the oldest grandchild, I could do no wrong. Dot-Dot and I had a special relationship.

About five years after her death, I stumbled upon a Merle Haggard song called “Grandma’s Christmas Card.” As I listened, I anticipated that Merle was taking us where so many country songwriters did during that period: singing the praises of some beloved figure for two verses, only to reveal in verse three that the beloved figure had passed away.

I thought, “Merle, if you were half the songwriter you think you are, you wouldn’t manipulate your audience like that. You’d break the news in the first line of the song that Grandma was dead — and then if you could still come up with three verses and a chorus, you’d really have something!”

So I climbed in bed with my guitar and wrote my own Merle Haggard Christmas song. I dredged up those childhood memories of the Christmas poker games with Granddaddy and his brothers, and most of all, Dot-Dot, with her wig and her whiskey. Had she lived just five years longer, I’m sure no one would have gotten a bigger kick out of the song that resulted. And whenever it’s played on the radio, I suppose that, in a way, my relatives and their idiosyncrasies live on in other families’ Christmas celebrations. Merry Christmas, everybody.

No Child Deserves To Be Left Behind

When one examines the hypocrisy inherent in so many heated discussions about birth control, it quickly becomes apparent that conservatives will do everything possible to proclaim and protect the legal rights of a zygote while ignoring the need of a child to be nourished and protected through the arduous and often frightening journey to adulthood.

2014-08-06-conservatives1.jpg

Although Christian conservatives may delight in singing What Child Is This? at Christmastime, their willingness to protect a living, breathing child is questionable.

  • Some children are sexually abused by members of their family.
  • The international trafficking of young children who are sold into prostitution and child labor situations is appalling.
  • For some of the more fanatic NRA members and open carry enthusiasts, the prevailing sentiment seems to be that their right to keep and bear arms trumps an innocent child’s right to life.
  • Darkwulfe’s diary on Daily Kos entitled The Voyage of the St. Louis (and How it Mirrors the Border Crisis) offers a disturbing history lesson for opponents of immigration reform.
  • A recent cartoon suggests that any and all children from Central America who attempt to cross the southern border of the United States in their desperate effort to find a better life should scream “My name is Fetus” in order to assure their safety.
  • Ian Grey’s poignant article on Salon.com entitled How I Escaped My Pederast offers a heartbreaking story of how confused and vulnerable teens can be ruthlessly exploited by pimps and chickenhawks.
  • In many cases, homeless teens end up on the streets of America after coming out to their not-so-tolerant Christian parents. In other cultures, however, the deadly combination of poverty and illiteracy can undermine a child’s emotional and spiritual development.

Two new films making the festival circuit offer dark, yet refreshingly blunt insights into teens who rise above their situations in order to redefine their lives. Each offers a candid perspective on reality that would easily scare off studio executives hungry for a commercial success.

Seen at the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival, Abdellah Taïa’s largely autobiographical film, Salvation Army, takes its time gathering momentum. The story follows a 15-year-old boy named Abdellah (Said Mrini) who is first seen living with his five sisters in Casablanca.

Abdellah may look innocent and rarely say much, but he’s keenly observant. Though he has an unrequited crush on his older brother, Slimane (Ammine Ennaji), he understands that Slimane is only interested in women.

2014-08-06-salvation1.jpg

(Ammine Ennaji) in a scene from Salvation Army

On those nights when his parents have sex, Abdellah sometimes tries to prevent his father (Abdelhak Swilah) from beating up his mother (Malika El Hamaoui) following intercourse. At other times he recognizes the subtle signals from a local fruit vendor (Hamid Elouajdi Mouladi) who uses Abdellah for a quick fuck before rewarding him with a watermelon to take home to his family.

Only when Slimane encourages Abdellah to learn how to read in French (so that he can escape from a life of poverty, patriarchy, and cultural oppression) do Abdellah’s horizons begin to broaden. As the filmmaker explains:

Salvation Army is actually a story of a solitude. Fragments from this solitude. The narration is not a classical one. The images seem slow and silent, but they are not. The hero is a gay Moroccan but he is not a cliché victim. Like so many Moroccans, he deals with reality with some perversity. He is totally alone. I had to find the right distance, the right images to say the hard reality of my country, Morocco (and not only for gay people). To show the silence imposed on everyone there. To show a world that I know very well. No one could write the adaptation in my place. I did it alone. I hope that they will get the rhythm, the hidden secrets.”

Midway through the film, an older Abdellah (Karim Ait M’Hand) is seen with Jean (Frédéric Landenberg), an older European man who is a professor. Although Abdellah has managed to get a scholarship to study in Geneva, he remains poor. When he and Jean hire a man to row them around in a boat while in Morocco, the man compliments Abdellah in Arabic on having found himself a rich boyfriend.

However, in a repressed culture like Morocco’s, their relationship is pretty much a quid pro quo. Jean gets a sexy (if somewhat sullen) young boyfriend while Abdellah snags a visa that allows him to live in Switzerland. After he breaks off his relationship with Jean, Abdellah’s options become increasingly limited. Eventually, the lonely young man finds himself knocking on the door of the local Salvation Army, hungry for food, shelter, love, and a better future.

Taïa’s brooding film, which is extremely short on dialogue, benefits immensely from Agnès Godard’s cinematography while capturing the quite desperation and loneliness of a stranger in a strange land. Here’s the trailer:

In the past few years LGBT film festivals have featured numerous entries depicting the challenges faced by straight parents of a gay child or gay couples who have adopted children (or conceived children with the help of a sexual surrogate). Few have shown gay men being confronted by the angry child they created with their best friend in college on that hopelessly drunken night when they were still trying to prove to themselves that they were straight.

Ignacio Montes is Armando in My Straight Son

Venezuelan filmmaker Miguel Ferrari has done a spectacular job of filling that gap with a provocative new film entitled My Straight Son (which was screened at the 2014 Frameline Film Festival). The film’s original Spanish title translates as Blue and Not So Pink, meaning that life isn’t always as pretty or happy as one might wish.

Set in Caracas, My Straight Son revolves around the closeted Diego (Guillermo García), a handsome, charismatic, and successful photographer who specializes in the fashion and arts scene. For the past few years, Diego has been in a stable relationship with Fabrizio (Sócrates Serrano), a successful OBGYN doctor who wants to marry Diego, move in together, and settle down.

2014-08-06-straightson2.jpg

about getting married and settling down in My Straight Son

Because Diego is often so wrapped up in his work that he ignores phone calls from his family, he learns (on extremely short notice) that his ex-girlfriend is putting their son on a plane to spend the summer with him while she participates in a special project in Paris. From the moment Diego picks up Armando (Ignacio Montes) at Simon Bolivar International Airport, it becomes obvious that the handsome teenager has arrived with a big chip on his shoulder.

2014-08-06-straightson3.png

Diego (Guillermo García) is visited by his son,
Armando (Ignacio Montes) in My Straight Son

Armando’s attitude (“I’m not your pal, I’m your son!”) has nothing to do with the fact that Diego is gay but everything to do with his anger that, as a father, Diego has failed to remember his birthdays and shown little interest in his son’s life. If meeting Diego’s overly dramatic friends delivers a stiff dose of culture shock, Armando’s reunion with his father is further tested when Fabrizio becomes the target of a vicious gay bashing and dies in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Diego asks friends to look after his son while he tries to deal with Fabrizio’s homophobic parents, attempts to track down the thug who murdered his lover, copes with his loud-mouthed and perpetually inappropriate female friend, Perla Marina (Carolina Torres), and seeks help from a popular transsexual cabaret performer named Delirio del Rio (Hilda Abrahamz) while struggling to handle his grief over Fabrizio’s death.

2014-08-06-straightson4.jpg

(Guillermo García) in a scene from My Straight Son

Meanwhile, Armando (who is shy with girls) has been chatting online with a young woman and trying to get up the courage to meet her in real time. Armando hasn’t helped matters by sending her a picture of one of the fashion models his father has photographed instead of a picture of himself.

Primarily known to Venezuelan audiences as an actor, Ferrari’s debut as the director of a full-length feature film is most impressive. Not only does My Straight Son look at Diego’s crises from the perspective of a man trying to cope with his biological family, his extended gay family, and his former lover’s homophobic family, it does a triumphant job of depicting the emotional strength of family values that transcend religion or ideology. As Ferrari explains:

“What I value most in an actor is the simplicity of his actions and the ability to empathize with the character, to stand in their shoes and make me believe that he is the character — unadorned and without fanfare. This film is not about a gay issue. It is a film with a great variety of characters, each with their particular sexual preferences. I wanted to talk about them from their human dimension, separating them completely from stereotypes. I wanted to talk about people who never talk; people who are discriminated against by prejudices of all kinds. This is a story about love, friendship, and about family in its broadest sense.”

2014-08-06-straightson5.jpg

My Straight Son is also a story with some hairpin dramatic turns, emotional challenges, and joyous surprises that is beautifully framed by Alexandra Henao’s cinematography and enhanced by Sergio de la Puente’s music. Its cast turns in rock solid performances (including the horrific gay bashing scene that costs Fabrizio his life) which allow viewers to witness a large coterie of complex characters forced to undergo substantial emotional growth. Lionel Richie On The Secret Chaos Behind Producing ‘We Are The World’ (VIDEO)

In 1985, producer Quincy Jones gave Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson the assignment of a lifetime. To help fight famine in Africa, he wanted them to write a song for the most famous artists in the music industry to sing together. On his upcoming “Oprah’s Master Class” interview, Richie reflects on creating the song that would become an anthem heard worldwide.

“Quincy walks in the door and says, ‘I need the song now,‘” Richie says. “And a day later, we had the bones for ‘We Are the World.'”

Now, it was just a matter or recruiting the talent. “Back then you couldn’t email it,” he says. “You had to put it on a cassette and send it to people. So we had people agreeing to be involved with a song they haven’t heard yet.”

The historic recording brought together an unprecedented number of artists, including Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan and Cyndi Lauper.

“And of course, what [the song] did do was beyond our wildest imagination,” Richie says. “We became a country unto itself. We became the world.”

“Oprah’s Master Class” with Lionel Richie airs Sunday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera

“Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera” is the first book to explore the meticulously composed and richly detailed photographs that Norman Rockwell used to create his famous artworks. Working alongside skilled photographers, Rockwell acted as director, carefully orchestrating models, selecting props, and choosing locations for the photographs–works of art in their own right–that served as the basis of his iconic images. Readers will be surprised to find that many of his most memorable characters-the girl at the mirror, the young couple on prom night, the family on vacation-were friends and neighbors who served as his amateur models. In this groundbreaking book, author and historian Ron Schick delves into the archive of nearly 20,000 photographs housed at the Norman Rockwell Museum. Featuring reproductions of Rockwell’s black-and-white photographs and related full-color artworks, along with an incisive narrative and quotes from Rockwell models and family members, this book will intrigue anyone interested in photography, art, and Americana.

Artist Adrien Broom Reveals the Inspiration Behind Her Fanciful Photos

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_e1954771.jpg

By Mila Pantovich

There are many different types of artists out there, from photographers and painters to sculptors and filmmakers, and some artists are talented enough that they excel at more than one medium. It’s pretty darn amazing though when someone has so much creativity spilling from their minds that they do all of it, and that’s exactly what Adrien Broom does.

Whether she’s working on her acclaimed Color Project in her Andy Warhol-esque studio space in New Haven, Connecticut (which includes simultaneously shooting a film and creating a book), going on the road with friends Grace Potter and the Nocturnals as their official photographer, or building ornate sets out in the woods, Adrien is always bursting with a creative energy that can only be described as beautifully organic.

2014-05-06-adrien_broom_facebook_a1954771.jpg

With much of Adrien’s work exuding a childlike innocence, sometimes in direct opposition with darker themes, it’s no surprise at all that her love for artistic expression grew at a very young age. Plus, her parents are both creative types; her mother manages an art gallery, and her father owns a company called H.P. Broom Housewright and refurbishes antique houses (oh yeah, and he’s also a landscape and figure painter). Noticing that she was the type of child who arranged food at a restaurant into still-life, Adrien’s mother set up a artistic after-school activity for her daughter with an art teacher named Xena. They went through a few different things (“At first we did piano and I…hated that”), before Broom started finding things that she enjoyed.

“She was the zaniest, coolest old woman,” recalls Adrien fondly. “She was kind of a jack-of-all-trades artist. She did lots of arts and crafts stuff, she was very hands-on. We would…do some drawing and this and that, and I remember just loving it…and loathing all the other after-school things [laughs].”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_a1954771.jpg

Her work, which she describes as a built set that she stages narratives within, straddles the hazy line between childhood and adulthood. Many of her favorite books as a child still resonate with her today, especially in her work, and she cites Maurice Sendak and Jill Barklem (Brambling Hedge in particular) as influences. She describes her art as pulling on the childlike place within her while being very much grounded in her adult perspective. “… I really want the work to be accessible, to children and adults… there’ll be different interpretations of the work, no matter who you are, how old you are, and that’s kind of the point…”

Much of her work is deeply rooted in fairy tales and mythology, reinterpreting figures like Aphrodite and stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears. You’ll notice while looking through her portfolio that she often uses animals, both living and taxidermied, in jarring ways. Sometimes the animals are juxtaposed with people in a way that seems to imply mankind’s invasive way of living, and other times she shows a harmonious balance. “I’m actually thinking about taking people out of my photos, and mostly having animals. I love what they symbolize, I love peoples’ connection with different kinds of animals, I love that they are social creatures, even though we don’t really understand. I love kind of combining our social ways with them. I just like the contrast, the beauty. They’re just gorgeous.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_h1954771.jpg

One of her favorite places to shoot is Ray of Light, a rescue farm in Connecticut. “They have the most gorgeous animals that they’ve rescued from different walks of life. Like that picture with the zebra? It’s actually a half-zebra-half-donkey… called a ‘zonkey,’ which is the best name I’ve ever heard in my life. I think they rescued him from a circus situation. He was kind of a prima-donna, I got like, one shot before he almost destroyed my whole set,” she laughs. Though some animals are certainly easier to handle, like the turtles she used in Day Dreams, Adrien definitely doesn’t shy away from a challenge — she actually wants to start using a lot of birds in a future project she’s been brainstorming.

With so many ideas, Adrien keeps a notebook in which she jots down whatever comes to mind. “I think the best advice I’ve ever gotten in my whole life was from a photographer, and he was like, ‘Adrien, you’ve got all this stuff…you need to calm down. The best thing you can do for projects is do one project at a time.’ And I think if I didn’t do that with the Color Project, I would never get it done. I’ve put my heart and soul and all my brainwaves into this one project, and I try really hard to not think about other things till I’m done.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_d1954771a.jpg

She’s been working on the Color Project for over a year now and it was partly funded through a Kickstarter campaign (the little girl starring in the project even donated five dollars). An eight-part exploration of color, the imaginative series shows a world of white as seen through the eyes of a child. The little girl first passes through a door into a red world, then orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and lastly rainbow. In looking at these images, it’s hard to picture someone physically creating the world without relying on photo editing techniques, but that’s exactly what Adrien does in her studio.

Each color takes over a month to create and shoot, starting with planning and material sourcing from her home in Brooklyn and ending with spending a couple weeks in her studio to make it a reality. Once shooting is finished, she goes back home and starts the editing process. “We build for about two weeks, but I plan the rest of the time. So it’s a lot of sketching and drawing what the set is going to look like, then finding all the materials,” Adrien explains. “A lot of people have been amazing with donating materials and time. So, it’s a lot of calling people and saying ‘This is the project I’m doing, are you interested in being involved?’ There’s a lot of planning.”

2014-05-06-adrien_broom_facebook_b1954771.jpg

The images are creative and striking, telling the tale of a little girl becoming a young woman through her experiencing of new worlds. Since it’s taken so long to shoot, you can actually chart the model’s growth throughout the series, which has been one of Adrien’s favorite parts. “From the first picture until now, I swear the girl’s grown like a foot,” she laughs. “And her face is changing, you know, she’s turning into a young lady, and actually, I love that, because the whole story is about growing up and discovering yourself and the world. I’m glad that it took this long to put together, so you cannot just emotionally but physically see her change. She was nine when we first started, and I think she’s about to turn eleven.”

Now that Adrien has finished the green world, she only has purple and rainbow left before this lengthy process is over and done with — something which will definitely be a little bittersweet. “I love working on them so much, but I’m so excited to see it as a full, finished project, and flip through and see the story unravel, and see [the girl] traveling through it. It’s going to be amazing to see the whole thing, but I’m gonna be sad, because I love the project.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_d1954771.jpg

Once the photography project is finished, she plans on hunkering down with her film collaborator Joe Manassi (who records video footage on shoot days while she takes photos) to figure out how exactly they want the film and children’s book to look and sound. “I’m actually debating, it might be a little backwards in a way,” she says. “I’m debating on having absolutely no words in the book, and have some words in the film. But I’m not really sure, it might just be music, but there might be words. I think I need to see the finished product [first].”

Though the Color Project may be ending soon, Adrien definitely doesn’t have a lack of things to keep her busy. She recently finished her first commercial gig for Disney and Phillips, an advertisement for night-lights based on Disney characters. “They wanted the advertisement for these night-lights to be a half-child’s bedroom, half-dream world. So I built these huge extravagant sets that were exactly that, so it was just like a perfect project for me because it’s kind of what I do anyway. It was awesome, it went really well, it was really fun.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_o1954771.jpg

She’s also been the official photographer for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals since the very beginning — Matt Burr, the drummer, is one of Adrien’s closest friends and has been since they were kids. The moment the music group is brought into conversation, Adrien makes her deep admiration and respect for them immediately obvious. She not only adores their music, but she also gives them credit for helping her gain the confidence needed to break out into the photography world.

Around the same time the band decided to make a go of it, Adrien had resolved to make a career out of photography. She started by helping the band with their press photo needs, oftentimes taking shots of them hanging out in coffee shops, while she was simultaneously working on her own projects. “With them it’s kind of fun, because there’s no set, it’s all kind of documentary. I’m in it and I’m not in control of anything. With my stuff, I’m 100 percent in control of everything, so it’s really nice to have that contrast.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_q1954771.jpg

“But then it’s crazy; they’re so insanely talented and so dedicated, they’re the hardest workers, they really motivate me a lot. Whenever I’m feeling lazy, I’m like, ‘No no no, Matt and Grace have been on the road for four years straight, get your ass out of bed.’ There’s no excuse,” Adrien laughs. “They’ve blown up, and they’re still working really, really hard, but they deserve it. It’s awesome. We just put out a book together, which is super cool. They’re kicking so much ass.”

The book, Inside Looking Out: A Decade On The Road With Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, is something the group of friends had been talking about for years and chronicles 10 years of their lives together. “They’re the ones that kind of convinced me to just say ‘f**k it’ and be a full-time photographer. I was going through a really hard time, personal life stuff, and Matt was like, ‘Get off your ass, come on the road with us, get out of the house.’ So I did that, that was the first time I really went on tour. It was the first time I was really happy in a long time,” Adrien remembers. “It just made me really happy, taking photos. I was like, ‘Oh, maybe this should be my life.'”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_g1954771.jpg

From then on, Adrien never looked back and it’s a good thing too, because the artist has a lot coming up. Most recently she was invited by the Hudson River Museum in New York to contribute to a cool new project that will be taking place in seven museums around the country in 2015. Called the Seven Deadly Sins, each museum will be showcasing a different sin, each rooted in fairytales, and Adrien was invited to do “Envy” for the Hudson River Museum. Though information on the event is sparse, it’s one exhibit all of us at JustLuxe are pretty excited to check out.

“It’s gonna be half installation. I think I’m doing three rooms with full installation, and then a ton of photographs,” she says. “I’m really looking forward to that. [It’s] going to be a weird head-place to be in for like a year. It’s just like, thinking about envy all day long. [Fairy tales are] very dark, but very fascinating. I’m going to be just living in those old, old texts for a while. I think the show will be really cool.”

2014-05-06-adrienbroom_f1954771.jpg

We’ve chatted with a lot of artists over the years, from musicians to photographers, but Adrien personifies genuine friendliness. She may be incredibly talented, but she talks about her art in a way that invites you into her life and her process, inspiring us all to pursue what we love.

The Actual Meanings Behind The Most Mysterious And Pointless Emojis

There’s no denying the rush you get when you’re able to write an entire sentence in emojis. Better yet, when you can write out a movie plot or an entire song chorus? Amazing. Emojis are awesome.

But let’s be real… a good portion of them are also totally useless. Because how often, REALLY, are we going to reference a VHS tape? And why do we need a clock face depicting every single hour? Without a doubt, some of those icons are total mysteries, and they’re taking up valuable keyboard real estate that could be used for emoji unicorns, burritos or, you know, the other emojis we definitely NEED.

So, without further adieu, here are some burning questions we’ve all had about emojis, and the answers you never knew you needed:

Some other emoji mysteries we solved:

The beloved smiley poop emoji (which, let’s be honest, is probably the best) is actually called “Dog Dirt.” DOG DIRT.

What you’ve probably been calling an “acorn” is actually a “chestnut.”

Also, you’ve probably been using this emoji to mean “ice cream” but it’s actually “shaved ice.”

This random square with a red ribbon is actually a bookmark. Who knew?!

That white thing with a pink swirl on it, that definitely looks like a dessert, is actually a “fish cake,” which is a total disappointment.

There’s still no cheese emoji or burrito, which are absolutely vital. Thank goodness, though, that we have an emoji for “Roasted Sweet Potato” and custard.

Don’t feel bad if your whole world is crumbling. Even the makers can’t make sense of some of these things because some of them are actually just called “Double Curly Loop,” “Wavy Dash,” and “Sparkle.”

This list is brought to you by the team at HuffPost Partner Studio. Check out some of the sweet content we’ve created in partnership with the world’s top brands, or find us on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram so you don’t miss a thing.

ABOUT THE BOOK Enid Blyton (1897-1968) stands as one of the most popular childrens book writers of the 20th century. Her legacy continues through a devoted fan base of those who grew up with her stories of inquisitive children getting into misadventures in the English countryside. Blyton also appealed to younger readers with her Noddy series, about a little boy made out of wood who lives in Toytown; the series produced a total of 24 books and a string of popular TV series. The appeal of Blytons books for older readers, from ages eight to 12, was primarily the lack of parental supervision or interference; in the Famous Five books, the indulgent aunt and uncle generally let the kids go off, unaccompanied in caravans or on camping trips across the moors at the ripe old ages of 14 though 16. MEET THE AUTHOR Paula Whiteside is currently a freelance writer for several web content providers, as well as the copy editor for Wine Business Monthly, an international industry magazine located in the Sonoma Valley Wine Country. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Although her academic career was promising, her parents marriage was not as stable. Enid later recalled nights when she would comfort her brothers at the top of the stairs as their parents loudly argued below. Her father left her mother for his secretary at the wholesale clothing business he managed when Enid was 13. To keep up appearances, the children, when asked, would tell neighbors that he was away on a visit. Enid later used this ruse as the premise for her book The Six Bad Boys, which Blyton biographer, Barbara Stoney, called an unusual attempt for Enid at social realism.” With her greatest ally gone from the home, young Enid began writing as a way to escape her mother. This most likely contributed to her prolific writing output as an adult, writing up to 10,000 words a day. The young Blyton also entertained her brothers by telling them stories, made up rhymes, wrote in her diary and read prodigiously. Her work and deter

Wall:Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain

I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red sidethe Communist sideof the Iron Curtain.” Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Sis shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Sis learned about beat poetry, rock ‘n’ roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilitiescreativity could be discouraged but not easily killed. By

Designers Behind New York’s Floating Pool Announce Next Steps

The team behind Plus Pool (+POOL) — that floating swimming hole that promises to be the world’s first water-filtering system of its kind — is inching closer to its goal of creating a massive public pool on the banks of New York’s East River.

In a statement released this week, masterminds Archie Lee Coates IV, Dong-Ping Wong and Jeff Franklin announced they are beginning construction on Float Lab, an experimental version of the planned 164-foot +POOL. They raised the funds for the smaller pool (35 feet by 35 feet, to be exact) through their last Kickstarter endeavor. Set to launch in 2014, it will put their filtration membranes to the test in real-river conditions and run throughout the summer to capture data.

Coates and company have partnered with naval architects at Persak & Wurmfeld, filtration textiles and systems specialists at Mackworth, fabricators at Olollo, Hudson River Park’s Pier 40, River Project, Columbia University’s Earth Institute and Riverkeeper to help make the test pool and water quality studies happen, and to keep the public informed of their progress.

Along with Float Lab, +POOL also announced the next phase of it’s “Tile by Tile” campaign, a crowdfunding method that offers supporters the opportunity to purchase a +POOL tile that will become part of the project’s final structure. The team is hoping to raise $ 500,000 this time around to further the larger pool’s design, engineering development, and economic impact report, among other things.

The 164-foot +POOL is still scheduled to open in 2016, if fundraising allows. In total, the pool needs to sell 70,000 tiles to reach its $ 15 million goal — a sum that would make this project the largest publicly and privately funded civic project to date.

“We look at the High Line as a perfect model [for +POOL funding]. It’s both public and private in the sense that it functions like a public park — it’s free to the public, the public can use it,” Coates explained in an interview with The Huffington Post. “But it’s offering all of this privately, because it’s funded through a non-profit called “Friends of the High Line.” That would be our goal, so that the project is not a burden on the city.”

“We’re not adding problems, but we are creating something that is a full-on part of the civic architecture of the city,” he added.

Waistland: The (R)Evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis

In the modern jungle of burgers, couches, and remote controls, obesity is an enormous and growing epidemic. Weight-loss books and diet gurus urge us to "listen to our bodies," but our instincts are designed for the African savannah, not food courts. The sugary and fatty foods that we, as hunter-gatherers, are programmed to forage used to be hard to come by. Now they’re as close as the vending machine down the hall. Radical changes are necessary and, fortunately, are biologically easier than small or gradual changes in diet. Barrett tells us how to reprogram our bodies, break food addictions, and ignore our attraction to "supernormal stimuli"-artificial creations that appeal to our instincts more than the natural objects they mimic. Barrett delves into scientific research-from animal ethology to evolution-to show the disastrous direction in which our instincts have led us, and how, using our intellect, we can get back on course.
