Father of Two Nearly Dies After Being Bitten By Rattlesnake’s Severed Head: ‘It Was Very Scary’

A man from Corpus Cristi, Texas, is recovering in the hospital after receiving more than 20 doses of antivenom to save him from a bite he received from the severed head of a rattlesnake.

On May 27, Jennifer Sutcliffe was beginning to prep her yard and garden for a family cookout that day when she came across a startling sight.

“I was pulling the grass and little weeds that were growing,” Sutcliffe, a nurse, tells PEOPLE. “I reached down to pull a clump of grass that was growing by one of my flowers — and I almost grabbed a rattlesnake.”

The snake, a four-foot long Western diamondback, was slithering through the garden and had come dangerously close to the mother of two. Sutcliffe called out to her husband, Jeremy, who ran over with a shovel and rammed it into the venomous animal, decapitating it. With the snake’s head severed from its body, the couple figured they were clear of any danger. But when Jeremy reached down to dispose of the animal’s remains almost 10 minutes later, the snake sunk its fangs into the fingers of his right hand.

Sutcliffe called 911 and helped her husband into their car as she tried to find a local hospital with rattlesnake antivenom available. But as she drove, Jeremy’s condition rapidly worsened, and it seemed as if they were quickly running out of time.

“We only got two miles down the road before he started going in and out of consciousness and having seizures. It was very scary,” Sutcliffe, 43, recalls. “I was trying to keep him calm, alert and awake, and just letting him know we were getting help.”

RELATED: Alabama Father Paralyzed After Venomous Coral Snake Bite: He ‘Thought It Was Just a Kingsnake’

With Jeremy fading, Sutcliffe pulled over and waited for medical personnel, who then rushed Jeremy to a helicopter and flew him to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital. Once there, Jeremy went into septic shock, and doctors had to place him in a medically induced coma by that evening.

“His blood pressure kept bottoming out, so they were giving him a lot of fluids,” Sutcliffe says. “I thought maybe he was going to be okay, but then the doctor told me it was a very grim scenario, because of the amount of venom that he got. That’s when I realized he wasn’t out of the woods.”

With her husband on a ventilator and his organs failing, doctors told Jennifer several times during those first 24 hours that her 40-year-old husband may not make it through the ordeal. Thankfully, Jeremy survived that first critical day, and doctors were able to stabilize him.

Jeremy made it out his coma on May 31, after receiving a total of 26 doses of antivenom, a massive amount considering bites typically only need two to four doses, Jennifer says. As of Thursday, Jeremy remains in stable condition, though he is experiencing acute renal failure.

“He’s stable, but he’s still on dialysis because his kidneys aren’t working,” Sutcliffe says. “They’re doing a lot of wound care as he lost the skin on his right two middle fingers, it’s just a high risk of infection for that wound.”

The couple has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Jeremy’s medical expenses, which has so far raised $ 200 of their $ 10,000 goal.

According to National Geographic, when a snake is decapitated, its head still has the capacity to carry out reflexive action, such as being able to open its mouth, bite and inject large amounts of venom. They are able to keep these reflexive abilities up to an hour after having their heads severed. In a story that made headlines in 2014, a chef from China was fatally bitten by a severed cobra’s head while he prepared to cook its body for soup — some 20 minutes after he decapitated it. In January of that same year, an Austrailian man was bitten by a red-bellied black snake 45 minutes after he severed its head with a shovel.

It’s important to point out that not all snakes in North America are venomous, and are harmless to humans. But if you are bitten by a venomous serpent — such as a rattlesnake, coral snake, water moccasin and copperhead — Mayo Clinic suggests that you remain calm, remove jewelry and tight clothing before you start to swell, and position yourself so that the bite is below or at the level of your heart until you can get medical attention.

“One of the things I’ve learned is if it ever happens again, is if we’re able to step away from the snake and not getting bitten, go into the house and call 911,” Sutcliffe says of what she would do differently. “Have them come to take care of the snake, that would be the best scenario next time.”

Khloé Kardashian on What Surprised Her About Being a Mom: ‘You Find This Energy and Patience’

Khloé Kardashian has been a mom to daughter True for just five weeks now, but she’s already learned a lot about being a parent.

While she’s been an aunt to her nieces and nephews for many years, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality star, 33, recently revealed that there have been some unexpected surprises about having her own child.

“I’ve always been really patient with children and it’s come in handy now that I’m a mommy. I think what surprises me most is no matter how tired you are, you find this energy and patience for your child,” the new mom shared on her app and website on Tuesday.

“You know that babies are so helpless and they rely on you for everything. So something just takes over and you find the energy to care for this helpless precious baby,” she wrote of her daughter, who was born on April 12.

As she continues to learn more things about being a mom, Kardashian recently admitted that she’s also learning how to fit in her favorite workouts in between feedings.

“The beginning parts of working out kind of suck because you’re pushing your body so hard, you’re so tired, and you’re trying to get back into your rhythm,” the Good American mogul told fans and followers on Snapchat Monday.

“It’s much more difficult than I think you expect it to be. I’ve been working out for 11 days now, I feel really good, but tired. My body is sore because it’s re-waking itself back up,” she added.

Kardashian also showed off her postpartum belly by revealing her bare abs in another video as she explained that she still has areas on her body she’s hoping to target.

“Five weeks after baby, feeling good. Muscle memory is a real thing because it’s still under there. Got to tighten it all up. I’ve got to get rid of this part. Just need everything to be solid,” she said while pointing out her backside.

The new mom also emphasized, “Just because I have a baby, doesn’t mean I have to stop doing the things that I love, and I love working out and getting my mind right.”

Die Hard 6 Script Reportedly Being Rewritten by The Conjuring Writers

20th Century Fox has reportedly hired The Conjuring writers to rewrite the script for Die Hard 6.

The Tracking Board reports Chad and Carey Hayes, who wrote both The Conjuring movies, will work on the screenplay for the next Die Hard entry. Earlier reports suggested the film will be an origin story featuring a young John McClane as a regular cop in 1970s New York.

Bruce Willis’ older version of the character reportedly still would feature somewhere as a bookend to the prequel story, with the film also moving between past and present, according to The Tracking Board’s report. No word yet on who might portray the younger John McClane or when Die Hard 6 might hit theaters.

Khloé Kardashian Feuds with Sister Kourtney for Consistently Being Late ‘Every F— Time’

Khloé Kardashian has had enough.

During a trip with her older sisters, Khloé, 33, got frustrated with Kourtney, 38, for making her and Kim, 37, wait an extra 30 minutes to leave for an event.

“What is she doing?” Khloé said to sister Kim, who gestured that she doesn’t know, in an E! clip of Sunday’s upcoming episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

In an attempt to find out Kourtney’s status, Khloé — who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Tristan Thompson — called her phone, which went directly to voicemail.

Just moments later, Kourtney casually walked into the waiting room with her phone to her ear and said, “Khlo?”

“Kourt, I’m being serious,” Khloé fired back at the eldest Kardashian sibling. “You need to figure out your life.”

Kourtney proceeded to explain that she was “on the phone with Larsa ,” but Khloé was still angered at her sister’s selfishness.

WATCH: Vacation Like a Kardashian: Here’s How Much It Will Cost You

“So you shouldn’t be on the phone! We’ve been waiting for you for 30 minutes!” Khloé said to Kourtney, who exclaimed, “I was getting ready!”

From Khloé’s perspective, Kourtney’s tardiness is obviously a pattern.

“But you’re always like this and we’re just waiting for you and waiting for you,” said Khloé.

Kourtney, who was visibly irritated, returned to her phone call with Pippen, and told her sister, “All right, I don’t have time to listen to you yell.”

Khloé clapped back, “I don’t have time to wait for you. I don’t want to go on trips if this is how you are every f—— time. You don’t care how selfish that is?”

Evidently, Kourtney wanted to ignore the issue at hand. “Shall we?” she said as she walked out of the room.

Lottery Winner with Cancer Dies Three Weeks After Finally Being Able to Afford Doctor

A winning lottery ticket worth a million dollars offered hope to one New York man, but the life-changing event would be short-lived as he lost his life to stage 4 cancer just three weeks later.

Donald Savastano, a self-employed carpenter living in upstate New York, struck it rich when he was driving home from work in early January and stopped at a convenience to purchase lottery tickets. The 51-year-old walked in and bought a Merry Millionaire ticket, and scratched it while on his way back to the car—revealing he had hit the $ 1 million grand prize.

“I couldn’t believe it!” Savastano told the New York Lottery in an announcement of his prize. “I brought it back in and scanned it under the ticket checker and knew it was a winner.”

Savastano decided to take the one-time lump sum payment, totaling $ 661,800 after withholdings. The winnings, he said, would allow him to build for the years to come.

“Being a self-employed carpenter, I didn’t really have a plan for retirement,” he said. “The money will help with that. I don’t have any other extravagant plans. I’ll buy a new truck, pay off some debt and invest for the future.”

One of those plans was finally going to the doctor for a check-up because he hadn’t been feeling well. But the visit resulted in terrifying news: Savastano had stage 4 metastatic cancer.

Danielle Scott, an employee at the store where the ticket was purchased, told ABC 7 that Savastano didn’t have insurance.

“He had a friend come and talk to me,” told ABC 7. “They told me that he was very sick and that he had brain and lung cancer and that he was in the hospital and they didn’t think he was gonna make it.”

Savastano died from the disease on January 26, just 23 days after purchasing his ticket.

“I was hoping that the money was maybe going to save his life,” Scott told the news station.

An obituary for Savastano he learned carpentry from his father as a child growing up on Long Island.

“He was known for his high-quality work and perfectionism,” the obituary reads. “He always tried to reach out and help those he could by teaching them ‘the right way to do things.’ “

Savastano lived with his girlfriend of 12 years, Julie Wheeler, and helped to raise her two sons. The family is asking for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Mom of Carolina Panthers Employee Who Killed 2 Kids Says She ‘Has Never Shown Any Signs of Being Depressed’

The mother of a North Carolina woman and Carolina Panthers employee who killed her two kids and committed suicide by jumping from an interstate highway bridge on Saturday says she saw no red flags to suggest her daughter would be capable of such a crime.

“Our daughter has never shown any signs of being depressed,” said Patricia Treadway, the mother of Christina Treadway, 34, and grandmother to Christina’s two children, 7-year-old son Isaiah Miller and 3-year-old daughter Iliyah Miller, in brief comments to Charlotte TV station FOX 46 WJZY.

“I want people to know she is a loving mother and would not have done this if she wasn’t so trapped and so alone,” Patricia Treadway said.

In a post on a GoFundMe page created by Christina’s parents, Allen Treadway wrote: “I am her father and we are struggling to understand how something like this could have happened, they were all beautiful souls.”

Writing on his own GoFundMe page, where he supported the Treadways fundraising efforts on behalf of their daughter and grandchildren, the children’s father, Antoine Moore, said: “Just know these kids were treated very well and loved emensley by their mother and father.”

“Christina was a loving mother who loved those children dearly,” he added. “Please allow them to Rest In Peace and allow us time to mourn this horrible event without the negativity. No one will ever know what myself and both families involved are going through. Please keep us all in your prayers.”

Antoine’s father, Greg Moore, said his son and Christina had been in a relationship for about 10 years, and that his son was out with friends when he received a text from Christina saying “she was going to end it all.”

“My children’s mother decided to end her life,” Antoine Moore wrote on his GoFundMe page. “And end my two beautiful kids lives. I am beyond hurt and sad.”

He added: “You never know what a person is going through mentally. My kids were my everything I truly don’t know how my life will go on.”

Christina Treadway put her children’s singing and dancing talents on display in a series of YouTube videos that also featured Christina herself, going by the name Tina Lateena. She worked as a seasonal ticket-taker employed by the Carolina Panthers football team at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Authorities say that after Christina jumped from the bridge of Interstate 485, where she died at the scene, they learned information that directed them to her residence. Police forced their way inside to find the children alone and fatally injured. They later died at Carolina Medical Center.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

Police have not shared a motive or revealed the type of the injuries suffered by the children.

Antoine Moore’s mother and the children’s paternal grandmother, Tina Moore, said that Christina “was a great mom. She was really, really a great girl.”

She added: “I love Tina to death, but she was just troubled. I don’t know what happened because she came and stayed at my house for the summer. I don’t know what happen, she just lost it.”

The maternal grandmother, Patricia Treadway, said of her daughter and grandchildren: “They were loved so very much in life and so very much in death.”

Katy Perry Opens Up About Being a Judge on American Idol: ‘I’m a Straight Shooter’

America, get ready to roar! Katy Perry is searching for the next “Kelly Clarkson.”

PEOPLE sat down with the “Swish Swish” singer at a special event hosted by a Denver Boys & Girls Club — where lucky members had the opportunity to meet, ask questions, and play Just Dance 2018 with the pop star. There she revealed just how much she plans to idolize authenticity during her first season as a judge on the American Idol reboot.

“My personality is that I’m a straight shooter — almost to a fault,” says Perry. “I just value authenticity so much that it can sometimes get me into trouble, because I take this job really seriously. I don’t want to walk away from American Idol and just have a season go by and we don’t have any Kelly Clarkson because that means we’re just filling space on television and I really truly want to be able to do this exercise and make someone’s dream come true.”

The ABC vocal competition series is set to premiere on Sunday, March 11, hosted by Ryan Seacrest with Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judging panel.

“It’s kind of like that good old fashion American dream: we find you, you work hard, you compete, you get tested in every way and you rise to the top if it’s meant to be for you. So I believe in that great American dream.”

And aside from sitting back and judging America’s next biggest star, Perry has also been on the hunt for America’s latest and greatest Halloween costume — right from her “Witness: The Tour” ensembles!

“If I wanted to pull out a candy-type creation I could, but I think that there’s a necessary evolution. You can’t always be that one thing, and I like trying new things. I like experimenting musically, sonically, and with my sense of style. Trends change and I like to start trends, not necessarily follow them,” she says. “ say there’s one costume maybe like every year that kind of like rises to the top and becomes a Halloween costume, and that’s when you know you’re doing something is when people dress as you for Halloween.”

Making sure to “wear whatever I want,” Perry’s famed peppermint dress evolved into a crop top that lights up to display a variety of messages, including words like “kiss” and images of peppermint candy.

“I think my peppermint dress from the California Dreams tour was one of my favorite ones ’cause it was mechanical. I flipped a switch every single night I went on and the bra started spinning. Now I wear an LED bra that has all the spinning things that I’ve worn on my tata’s,” she says.

“I like all my costumes now,” Perry continues of her favorite stage pieces. “I have a gold one in particular that I wear every once in a while for special occasions that makes me feel like I’m in Star Wars.”

With a series of dazzling bodysuits, latex getups and sheer cutouts, Perry says she’s “happy” about her figure.

“My body’s changing and I’m like, ‘It’s winter, and I’m like hibernating. I’m storing the foods, I’m thick, I’m happy about it,’” she says. “There are things that I wear that sometimes I feel like I look great in them, but you don’t have to be like skin and bones.”

Thirteen Grammy nominations later, making RIAA history as the first artist to earn three Diamond Song Awards and even launching her own collection of shoes and fragrance, the “Roar” singer remembers the times when she wasn’t on top of the world.

“I never had it come easily, and a lot of people forget sometimes that people had to work really hard to get here — especially when they’ve been around for so long they’re like, ‘Well, you were just born this way.’ It’s like, ‘Oh no, oh no,’” she says.

“I got to a point where I finally could help take care of my family a little bit, and that made me feel so good. I get to help take care of my sister and my nieces and stuff like that,” she adds. “ makes me feel like ‘Wow, they’re never gonna have to struggle like we did as a family growing up because all of our arguments were about money.’”

Her biggest ‘I made it’ moment?

“I played the Super Bowl and I didn’t trip, and I didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction!” an ecstatic Perry says of taking the stage at Super Bowl XLIX in 2015. “Super Bowl is kinda like touching the ceiling.”

At Valentino, Alber Elbaz Talks Being a Nerd

SAVED BY THE BELL: It was back to school for guests attending the Valentino show Sunday, located in the gymnasium of the Lycée Carnot school, designed by Gustave Eiffel. So what kind of students were the show guests?
Clad in a black biker jacket with studded wave motifs at the back, Carla Bruni, who sat next to Valentino Garavani chattering away in Italian, looked like she’d have been a bit of a rebel. But the rest were remarkably well-behaved, so they all claimed.
“I was a very good student. I was a nerd and I remain one,” said Alber Elbaz. When asked if he had any projects in the pipeline, he teased: “You know, silence is a beautiful thing.”
Justice Smith, who has just wrapped filming “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” said he was a straight-A student. “I was so scared of the rules, although I think toward the end, that’s when I started to drop off. But I was a good kid, not to toot my own horn,” he said. Asked about his impressions of the French, this being his first trip to Paris, he replied: “Everyone tries to get you drunk, but I’m cool with that. We’ve been so jet-lagged. We were like,

Justin Bieber Focusing on ‘Being Spiritual and Attending Church’ After ‘Disappointing’ Decision to Cancel Tour: Source

Justin Bieber is taking some time to love himself.

On Monday, a rep for the singer, 23, revealed the singer was canceling the remaining dates of his Purpose World Tour “due to unforeseen circumstances“; following the announcement, Beliebers around the world unleashed tweets voicing their frustration.

Now, a friend of Bieber is explaining why the “Sorry” singer needed a break from his grueling schedule on the road.

“He didn’t feel like he could give the rest of the tour as much energy as his fans deserve,” says the friend of Bieber’s decision to call it quits. “He is a perfectionist and didn’t want to disappoint fans with some half-ass performance. He thinks his fans deserve and should expect the same performance at the end of the tour as in the beginning. He just didn’t have that passion right now. He is truly exhausted.”

Concurs another insider: “He checked out. It was a long, long run for him.”

Bieber toured his Grammy-nominated Purpose album for about 18 months before pulling the plug.

“It’s a mental exhaustion that very few people understand,” adds the friend. “It seems very fair, although understandably disappointing to his fans, that he canceled the rest of the tour. It’s a mature way of saying, ‘Sorry, I need to focus on my own health for a bit.’ It wasn’t an easy decision for him. He has had this feeling before though and knows he has to just take a break from performing. It doesn’t mean he will never tour again — of course he will. He loves touring. Let the guy rest, and he will come back even better.”

As for how Bieber is spending his down-time these days?

“Being more spiritual and attending church is how he finds his energy and focus again,” adds the friend of the singer, who is a member of New York City’s star-studded Hillsong Church congregation.

Indeed, a source previously told PEOPLE, “He’s been going to church and has been hanging out with his church crew.”

Per the initial press release from Bieber’s rep: “Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts. Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across six continents during this run. However, after careful consideration, he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.”

Nina Dobrev Says It Was Her First Time Being a Bridesmaid at Julianne Hough’s Wedding

It’s been 10 days since Julianne Hough‘s romantic outdoor wedding on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to NHL star Brooks Laich, but the world still can’t get enough of the details Dancing With The Stars judge’s picturesque (and Pinterest-perfect) nuptials. So when PeopleStyle got to sit down with Reebok’s newest ambassador Nina Dobrev — who is one of Hough’s best friends and was a bridesmaid for the wedding — we had to get the inside scoop about what being in the wedding party was like.

But Dobrev says she didn’t have much to compare her experience as Hough’s bridesmaid to…because she’s actually never been one before!

“Well I have to tell you, it was my first ever bridesmaid experience I ever had,” the actress tells PeopleStyle. “Julianne and Brooks popped my cherry — in a way! ” Dobrev hasn’t stopped raving about the entire wedding weekend on social media, and has a feeling any of her future experiences as a bridesmaid won’t be anywhere near as great. “It is only downhill from here,” she says.

The star, who wore a pastel pink Marchesa bridesmaid dress, says she was one of the lucky few who knew what (two!) dresses her best friend would be wearing on the big day. “I was at all of her fittings at Marchesa and saw her every step of the way when they were designing it,” Dobrev says. “I got to be a big part of that as a spectator.”

When it came to the wedding ceremony and reception, the 28-year-old star (who recently went public with her new boyfriend Glen Powell) tips her hat off to event planner Troy Williams of Simply Troy Lifestyle + Event, who organized every detail of the weekend affair.

10-Year-Old Boy Drowns After Being Swept into a River Pipe in Connecticut

A 10-year-old boy who slipped into a Connecticut river and was then swept into a river pipe, was found dead on Friday, according to multiple reports.

Authorities say Ben Callahan slipped from an embankment when he was playing with his two brothers and fell into the water.  The boy then got swept into a water pipe along the Branford river, WTNH reports. His brothers tried to rescue him, Branford Police Capt. Geoff Morgan told WFSB.

“They were on the edge of the roadway by the culvert,” Morgan said. “One of them lost their footing and got swept into the pipe that goes underneath the water.”

The boy went missing at about 1 p.m. on Friday and was located three hours later, the Associated Press reports. His body was found in the pipe that goes underneath the water, NBC Connecticut reports.

Police used divers, sonar and a drone to locate the boy, according to AP.

“This is a very tragic event, the loss of a young member of our community,” Morgan said.

Morgan urged families to be mindful of waterways after rainstorms.

“When waterway swells around rainstorms, remind your children to not get around those pipes,” Morgan said.

Branford Public Schools said the boy was a student in one of its schools, as reported by NBC Connecticut.

“Our collective hearts are broken and our thoughts and prayers are with the family. The school district is arranging for grief counselors to support children experiencing difficulties with the tragic passing of a classmate,” the school district said in a statement.

A candlelight vigil will be held Sunday evening.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help raise money the Callahan family and has already raised over $ 11,000, nearly double its $ 5,000 goal.

Cardi B Covers ‘Fader,’ Talks About How Being Unapologetic Led To Her Success

Cardi B is the cover star of The Fader’s Summer Music issue.

The “Lick” rapper went deep with the magazine to discuss her journey from stripper to Instagram star to reality TV star to award-nominated artist.

The Bronx native told the publication she’s never been one to hide her big personality. But when she reached half a million followers on Instagram ― mostly due to her empowering and hilariously real videos ― fame wasn’t on her mind. She didn’t even think about following her dreams in music. She was all about handling the business in front of her.

“I was always scared to follow my dreams because if I follow my dreams and I fail, I can’t dream about it anymore,” she told The Fader. “It’s easier to settle for less.”

But a little encouragement from her manager led her to create her breakout single, “Foreva,” derived from one of her most memorable and viral moments on “Love & Hip-Hop: New York.”

Since dominating the reality series (and Instagram timelines), Cardi has dropped two mixtapes, signed a major deal with Atlantic Records and got nominated for two BET Awards. The rapper said though she feels guilty at times about her family struggling with money, she reminds herself of her work ethic.

“I do feel kind of guilty sometimes ’cause, like, I could buy myself a $ 5,000 dress or a $ 3,000 dress and I’m buying these things but I’m knowing that my cousin need money for the rent,” she said. “And then I gotta tell myself, ‘Stop feeling guilty. You worked for this.’ When I was a stripper, I used to strip like six nights a week. I used to bust my ass. And I didn’t stop [working]. Until today I work just as hard as I did before.”

Though Cardi is done with the strip club and reality television, she’s sure of her place in life now more than ever before, even with the criticism she may face.

“Am I ever gonna grow thick skin? No. I just gotta focus on making money,” she said. “Cause ain’t no going back. I’m gonna be famous forever.”

Chris Paul on Five Four Collection and Being a Free Agent

NEW YORK – Chris Paul didn’t seem stressed about being a free agent.
The NBA player, who is currently between teams, was in good spirits on Tuesday night while celebrating the launch of his capsule collection with Five Four, a men’s wear subscription service, at Catch in the Meatpacking District.
“This is sort of my first time being a free agent, and I can see how it can become stressful and taxing and you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. But I’m so fortunate to have the family and support system that I have,” said Paul.
Although Paul has worked with the Jordan brand for the past 10 years, this is the first time he’s partnered with a fashion company. According to Paul, some of that had to do with his contract with the Nike-owned company, but a lot of it had to do with the relationships he built with Andres Izquieta and Dee Murthy, Five Four’s cofounders. Paul first met Izquieta and Murthy when he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers and was intrigued by the Lob City sweatshirts that fans were wearing in the stands, which Five Four used to make.
“It’s been amazing to watch their growth since

Dancing with the Stars’ Rashad Jennings Opens Up About Being Bullied as a ‘Chubby’ Teen with a 0.6 GPA

Rashad Jennings understands firsthand the effects of childhood bullying, and is making it his priority to set a positive example to the next generation of leaders.

The Dancing with the Stars finalist spoke at Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, where he answered students’ questions and opened up about how he overcame the odds as an overweight, fifth string running back with a 0.6 GPA in high school and advanced to the NFL.

Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE, 32-year-old Jennings reveals that he was bullied as a teen, which is one of the reasons that he now wants to be an uplifting role model to students in the way that he leads his life.

“I was definitely bullied,” Jennings tells PEOPLE. “I was made fun of a lot because I was a 0.6 GPA, chubby kid with glasses and all that good stuff. But I was just goofy enough not to show people how I was feeling inside. That’s why I say you never know what somebody’s dealing with behind their eyes, because I personally just don’t do a good job of showing my struggles unless I tell it. It doesn’t come off my face.”

Jennings, who will compete against Normani Kordei and David Ross next week for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy in the DWTS season 24 finals, recently binge-watched Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, which opened his eyes up even further to the negative impacts of teasing and bullying.

“There’s so many different metaphors in of how a kid can get to that position and you don’t even realize it — in a matter of a couple months how from home life, maybe no attention or don’t feel comfortable to open up, every kid’s been there,” says Jennings. “It makes you stop and analyze how a couple decisions that you can make and how you speak to somebody could push them right over the limit.”

Thankfully, despite being bullied in his teen years, Jennings says he never contemplated taking his own life “because unlike the show, I did have outlets and people that listened.”

“It just reminded me of why I enjoy talking to kids about the importance of uplifting each other and being wholesome,” Jennings says reflecting on the Netflix series, and adds, “because you don’t know — you never know what somebody’s dealing with in their heart and behind their eyes. We don’t have that ability.”

FROM PEN: Learn The Process Behind Selecting TIME‘s 100 Most Influential People

Although Jennings humbly believes that “there’s nothing special about me, I just always find myself in special positions,” he is using his celebrity and voice for good.

“Kids need to see something worth mimicking. I know that I do too. I personally need to see something worth mimicking to give me encouragement to stand on the things that I believe in and know to be true,” he says about the importance of speaking to students. “To give them a hope that dreams come true, hard work pays off, that you can become anything that you desire, because sometimes you forget that in everyday work. Even adults — we forget that. We quit striving because we’re comfortable and that’s another type of failure to me.”

“For these kids, especially in high school, they are looking for substance,” he continues. “You don’t know if you’re planting a seed in somebody’s life or watering it. I never know which one I’m doing, and so I’m always conscious to do one or the other.”

Dancing with the Stars‘ season 24 finale airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Gloria Steinem on Beauty: ‘After You’re 70, You Have No Interest in Being Sexy’

Feminist icon, author and activist Gloria Steinem has always had a complicated relationship with her looks. Among early feminists she was known as the beautiful one, a designation that rankled.

“Before feminism I was pretty — only after feminism was I ‘beautiful,’” she says. “The low expectations of what feminists looked like had elevated me! People thought if you could get a man, you wouldn’t be a feminist.”

Less was made of her beauty as she aged, and she’s found that freeing: “I want people to listen to me.” Yet she looks terrific at 83, and like most of us, she takes care with her appearance. “I certainly think about my looks,” she says. “I try to look like myself, does that make sense? I feel free and happy, and I like to look that way.”

Steinem talked to PEOPLE exclusively for the 2017 World’s Most Beautiful issue about what beauty means to her, the tyranny of plastic surgery — and why a woman’s never too old to wear a motorcycle belt with studs.

Botox? Fillers? Cosmetic surgery?Botox: no. Fillers: No. Cosmetic surgery: never. I definitely color my hair, but I’ve been doing that since my 20s. God alone knows what’s under there. I get it done every couple of months — if you get those little crayons with the terrible name, Tween Times, you don’t have to go so often.

Do you work hard to stay so slim?I exercise sometimes. I’ve always been conscious of weight because my father and my sister both weighed over 300 lbs. for most of their lives. So it’s like being in a family of alcoholics — you don’t drink. I’m not that careful, I love to eat. I just binge in moderation.

Do you feel bad about your neck, like Nora Ephron did?Yeah, but not that bad. Nora Ephron started to feel bad about her breasts when she was very young — she just felt bad about herself, period. I was so sad that she wrote those articles about breasts and neck — I don’t know what was going on in her head.

Julia Roberts is the 2017 World’s Most Beautiful Woman! Learn her secrets to staying young — and subscribe now for this special edition featuring over 50 pages of beauties — only in PEOPLE!

Why would you never consider cosmetic surgery?Recently I was in Florida speaking at a book club that benefits services for older people. And the degree to which plastic surgery has taken over is frightening. People would look so much better without it! To look out at these hundreds and hundreds of faces with hair extensions and false lips and false breasts — it made me want to cry. The culture is perfectly clear that it’s gendered — men don’t do it to the same degree.

But you’re genetically blessed…Well I don’t know. My neck is sagging, everything is sagging. My skin is terrible. But so what? I would be afraid no one would listen to me. Talking to someone with bad plastic surgery is like talking to a man with a bad toupee. You cannot think about anything else.

Is there any particular look you aim for as you’ve gotten older?I’m just wearing what I’ve always worn. I saw a motorcycle belt with studs and sequins in the window of a men’s Harley Davidson’s store and went in and bought it. The guy was kind of appalled. I am conscious of trying to look cool, but I do occasionally think to myself — maybe an 83-year-old woman should not be wearing a motorcycle belt! Then I do it anyway.

Do you think about looking sexy?Listen, after you’re 70 you have no interest in being sexy. You have no interest in sex, so the idea of being sexy is like, hello, I have all those brain cells now for something else! The culture is so sexualized, it’s hard to explain that you don’t miss it. It isn’t better, it isn’t worse. It’s just different.

One New Jersey teen has a very tough decision to make — which Ivy League school to attend.

As it came time to apply to colleges, Morris Hills High School senior Ifeoma White-Thorpe decided she’d “shoot shot” and go for the nation’s biggest and most prestigious universities, WABC reports.

One-by-one, the results came in. White-Thorpe had gotten into all eight Ivy League schools.

“It was definitely a surreal experience,” White-Thorpe tells PEOPLE. “I don’t think anyone applies to these type of schools expecting that they’re going to get into one of them.”

Beginning with Harvard College, the 17-year-old was accepted to Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth Cornell, Columbia, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania.

“I remember when I got my Harvard acceptance, how excited and thrilled and how humbled I felt by it because I was just like, ‘Wow! Out of the thousands of candidates they get they chose me,’ ” she says.

“I feel like I’m still in a daze now that I think about it I’m like, ‘Wow! Is this really me?’ ”

As if choosing between the eight schools weren’t difficult enough, White-Thorpe was also accepted to Stanford University.

“At this time, there is no school that I particularly favor over the other,” she says. “I like all of the schools equally. Moving forward, I’m going to go to all of the accepted students days and feel it out.”

FROM COINAGE: 5 Financial Mistakes to Avoid in Your 20s

The teen is student government president at the Rockaway high school, according to WABC. She said she hopes to study biology and pursue a career in global health, noting that she wants to continue her research in cardiac arrest and the sickle cell disease trait.

But aside from that, the teen says she’s looking for a great social climate at her school of choice.

“I’m really looking for a strong community,” she tells PEOPLE. “A strong support system.”

While White-Thorpe was surprised at the good news, the teen’s mother said she expected nothing less from her determined daughter.

“She has always been a hardworking girl,” Pat White-Thorpe told ABC News.

“As a little girl, she was a great writer. I remember when she was in kindergarten. She spoke on behalf of the kindergarten class and it blew our minds away.”

PEOPLE had an exclusive first look at the story Monday.

“I couldn’t figure out why I was so unhappy. I blamed it on being tired and possibly growing out of the role: ‘Maybe I’m just not a goofy person anymore. Maybe I’m just supposed to be a mom,’ ” she said.

The Real Work Of Being An Ally

By Tamara Winfrey Harris

Never in a generation have women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community more dearly needed active allies to counter inequality. Unfortunately, the contours of active allyship are elusive to most Americans — even progressive ones. It’s not simply that it is easier to disapprove of bigotry passively than it is to actually do something about it. (Though it is.) It’s also that many people lack experience resisting the prejudice baked into American society.

But there are plenty of men and women who have long been committed to living the values of anti-racism, -sexism, and -homophobia who can teach us how to do better. In the weeks leading up to Donald J. Trump’s inauguration, I spoke to everyday activists — writers, lecturers, Sunday School teachers, and mothers — about how to support marginalized people and fight discrimination. Conspiring with marginalized people to beat back bigotry requires five things of would-be allies, they told me: learning, listening, speaking up, taking action, and being brave.

Learn.

People of color know full well the effect systemic racism has on their lives. They know its history, its hiding places, and where it intersects with other issues like class and gender. White supporters of people of color need to understand this, too, and they can start by seeking out information about race with the same attention and vigor they pay to other issues they care about.

Ashley Ray was motivated by her family to learn more about race: She is white, her husband of 17 years is black, and her children are biracial. She began teaching herself about racism and white supremacy as a way to be a better wife and mother. She started online, where several organizations devoted to social justice and equality have robust resource pages, including the Human Rights Campaign, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Conspire for Change, and Showing Up for Racial Justice.

She also sought out the actual voices of people of color. This is crucial, because most Americans live in a bubble: Seventy-five percent of white people, for instance, do not have non-white friends. This is why, Ray says, it is so important to listen to firsthand accounts of what it is like to be Latinx or Native or African-American or Asian in America. Allies should expand their media consumption to include outlets — like Colorlines, Ms., Bitch, The Advocate, and Black Girl Dangerous — that feature voices and reporting often ignored by mainstream media.

Listen.

And, Ray stresses, allies must “learn to believe these voices and understand that you’ve been conditioned not to. You have to make the choice to believe them.” It is a sad fact that women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community are often suspected of bias when speaking about their lived experiences and the real impact of inequity. Advocates have to challenge themselves to listen to marginalized people and to trust them, even when that means confronting their own prejudices and inaction.

Deanna Zandt, author and founder of Lux Digital, currently runs a blog called Ask Deanna About Racism But Only If You’re White. Deanna has always been a progressive and an ardent feminist, but finding her race politics took some soul-searching — prompted when she was chastised for talking the talk without walking the walk.

“I am part of the Women, Action, and the Media (WAM!) community. We had a conference where during and afterward a bunch of women of color, and then queer women of color specifically, spoke up publicly about not feeling included or welcome,” she explains. Feelings hurt, she responded to the complaints with defensiveness.

“One of the things that happened during that process is I realized that everything that had ever been said to me by [men] about gender, I was in my head saying to these women of color about race,” she remembers.

That experience led Zandt to reflect on the ways she’d failed to intervene in black women’s erasure from feminist spaces, and how she had been denying her own race-related blind spots.

Ray also acknowledges that being called out for race bias still sometimes prompts feelings of defensiveness — a very human reaction. But, like Zandt, over time, she has learned the most helpful response as an ally is to be quiet, listen, and examine the charge. Ray says, “Most of the time if something is getting called out, it needs to be called out.”

Speak Up.

An ally’s ability to speak up for marginalized people to other privileged people is perhaps the most valuable thing they have to offer.

“It’s very effective for boys and men to hear other boys and men speak out against violence against women,” says Byron Hurt, an activist and filmmaker whose documentary Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes examines toxic masculinity. Hurt says that men who support women give other men permission to think about themselves and women in a different way. This proactive advocacy by men is imperative, because sexism is men’s problem to solve, he says: “[Men] can’t expect women to fight all of the battles around sexism.”

Likewise, says Terri Kempton, “racism is a white problem created by white people to benefit white people and it needs white people to change it,” she says. White Nonsense Roundup, the group she co-founded four months ago, is a collection of mostly white people trying to educate other white people about issues of race and privilege. The group serves as an “on-call service” for people of color who are experiencing harassment or are embroiled in tough racial discussions with white people online. “They can tag us or they can use our handle on Twitter and call us into a conversation and we will take over some of the education piece so the burden doesn’t perpetually fall on people of color.”

The other part of the group’s work is coaching white people in having conversations about race with friends and family — for instance, teaching them how to push back on offensive jokes. (Kempton says not to laugh, but to put the burden of proof on the joke teller to explain why they believe their comment is funny. She also suggests leveraging common ground and shared culture. For example, reminding a dedicated mom of her love for her kids may help her understand why immigrant parents also want the best for their children. And, she says, it’s okay to prepare snappy comebacks in advance or to circle back if you get tongue-tied when incidents occur.)

Take Action.

Most Americans are not activists. And not all people can take the same risks. But everyone can work within their sphere of influence to make change.

“There is a part of me that wanted to leave my job and go to Standing Rock,” says Dr. Liza Talusan, an educator, facilitator, activist and writer. “[I] wanted to block the highway or do a ‘die-in,’ at City Hall. [But] I totally admit that’s not me. My capacity is doing it through the systems of education.”

Talusan said that for her — a straight woman who’s motivated to support gay and trans equality because of her Catholic faith — that means, in part, being a resource for “religious institutions looking to be more inclusive of LGBT communities” and visiting Catholic schools to talk about gay and trans inclusion. While these actions align with her profession in diversity education, Talusan also acts on her values in everyday life: for instance, by “disrupting norms” when she teaches Sunday school, using inclusive language that acknowledges different family structures.

Be brave.

These things are not always comfortable. But Ray says that allyship means “committing to pushing past the point of comfort to take effective and impactful action to change things” — even if that action is messy or dangerous. A willingness to take risks is non-negotiable. Kempton says that to be an ally requires “bravery.”

Whatever their discomfort, good people must intercede, for instance, when they see a Muslim woman being harassed for wearing a hijab. Maeril, a French art director and filmmaker, created an illustrated guide to standing up to public Islamophobia and other harassment: Sit beside the person being harassed and engage them in conversation, ignoring the attacker. Maintain eye contact with the victim and continue the conversation until the attacker is starved of attention and leaves. Escort the victim to a neutral area where they can collect themselves. Respect their wishes if they say they are okay and just wish to leave.

Speaking out against bigotry and inequality can come with a personal sacrifice. Jackson Katz, an educator, filmmaker, author, and creator of Mentors in Violence Prevention (which works on gender violence prevention), says that people working in solidarity with marginalized groups “give up the ease of interaction with people in [their] own group.” Dr. Damon Berry, a professor of religious studies, says that in some cases he’s lost relationships with friends and family, “because there was just no space for us to develop any understanding of each other.” At the same time, he’s gained “deep friendships and real, profound connections” with people different from himself. “You learn things about them, they teach you things about yourself, and you support one another and you care for one another,” he said. “To me, that’s what a society should be.”

Looking ahead to a Trump presidency, the moral imperative to do what’s right has to override the costs. “People who want to perform allyship are really going to have to consider what they would risk,” Berry says. “There may come a time where one is called upon to sacrifice economic comforts, to sacrifice even physical safety. And if you are not willing to sacrifice those things, and more, perhaps — to stand for what you believe in and the commitment you made — then you don’t have the courage of your convictions. Perhaps you never believed it at all.”

Being Musically Attuned

Being Musically Attuned

Listening according to mood is likely to be what most people do when they listen to music. We want to take part in, or even be part of, the emerging world of the musical work. Using the sources of musical history and philosophy, Erik Wallrup explores this extremely vague and elusive phenomenon, which is held to be fundamental to musical hearing. Wallrup unfolds the untold musical history of the German word for ‘mood’, Stimmung, which in the 19th century was abundant in the musical aesthetics of the German-Austrian sphere. Martin Heidegger’s much-discussed philosophy of Stimmung is introduced into the field of music, allowing Wallrup to realise fully the potential of the concept. Mood in music, or, to be more precise, musical attunement, should not be seen as a peculiar kind of emotionality, but that which constitutes fundamentally the relationship between listener and music. Exploring mood, or attunement, is indispensable for a thorough understanding of the act of listening to music.

3 Rules For Being A Good Third Wife

By Mandy Stadtmiller

“Marriage … You’re in it for life in theory,” my husband ruminated while recording an episode of his podcast recently as he sidelined to talk about our union, which just reached the 14-month mark. “But you can still walk out. I mean this is my third fucking wife.” His female guest interrupted him, rightfully shocked as to what he just revealed.

“Wait — this is your third wife? Oh my God! Why do you keep getting married? What’s the point of getting married?”

“I just love it,” my husband replied sarcastically before getting earnest. “You fall in love, you stay with somebody, and marriage is just the next step. That’s the way it was the first couple of times. It wasn’t like that with Mandy.”

Related: 4 Love Myths That Are Hurting Your Relationship

Listening to their banter, I was tickled by all the things he was saying (“her smile is one of those light-up-the-room kind of smiles,” “we’re perfect for each other,” “sometimes I’m afraid of her”), but it was that last six-word sentiment that stood out the most. With that sentence, he broke down his philosophy to a successful third marriage as the Rule of Three (as in writing or comedy): In the first two you establish a pattern, and on the third you deviate from it.

My husband’s first two marriages came out of a deep love, but they also came out of something deeply flawed: A sense of obligation. Our own marriage came from a different place: He really wanted it, and the only obligation he had was to his own desires.

So what did I do to change his mind about marriage? In his words, I was the anti-wife. (I myself called it being “unwifeable.”) I am the opposite of wanting to have kids and move to the suburbs. The sex got better over time as opposed to getting worse. Our emotional intimacy grew to deeper levels of understanding as opposed to that creepy sensation of living with your roommate. There’s more honesty, more communication, more intimacy — and zero game-playing.

You might be wondering what my reasons were for being open to marrying a guy who’s been divorced twice. I suppose the same qualities that made me so right for him made him so right for me. I come from chaos: My dad is a blind combat vet. My mom has severe OCD. I understand very well that how someone appears to be on the surface is often never even close to the real story below.

To me, judging someone for being married twice would be like judging my father for how he looked or my mom for how she behaved. It’s an entirely superficial and socially imposed status designation. Failure, dysfunction, and lessons learned are how people succeed in life. To discount someone based on their past failings would be both petty and short-sighted.

But let’s be real, there are still many questions that you need to ask yourself if you are going to become the third wife. Say, are the past wives still involved in his life? Will he drop you when things get tough? Are some people just not meant to stay married — and will they just keep making the same mistakes over and over?

Here are my top three pieces of advice for marrying that thrice-charmed spouse.

Rule No. 1: Don’t get married because you’re with some guy who “needs to be married.”

“In none of my relationships after my second divorce was marriage ever something I aspired to be a part of ever again. Meeting you changed all that,” my husband told me right before he proposed.

But how did I change it?

He fell in love with me precisely because he says I was so different than past girlfriends — and didn’t care about ever getting married again. He knew that I was married from 25 to 30 to my college sweetheart and wasn’t planning on entering the institution again anytime soon. (Which I believe also made me an ideal partner for him. I know how tough marriage is, and why you shouldn’t enter into it without some brutal soul-searching.)

As for him, he made it clear that he wasn’t some “marriage fetishist guy” from the get-go. I remember attending one of his stand-up shows early on in our relationship and hearing him say he was “never getting married again.” My friend whispered to me, “Oh, too bad.” But I didn’t think so. After all, I was over marriage, too. Ironically, that mindset made us both open to the institution again — our negative Obligatory Marriage Disease baggage was in the past.

Only when something is truly dead (like killing off all that peer pressure from friends, family, society to get married) can something new, such as a natural, powerful desire make a commitment of your own volition be reborn.

Rule No. 2: Understand what worked and what didn’t in your partner’s past marriages.

There can be a sense of dismissiveness (or shock) when people meet someone on their third marriage. But a lot of times this comes from a simple lack of understanding — and if you want to be a good Wife No. 3, empathy is your No. 1 priority. You best strive for compassion and emotional intelligence … unless you want to be reading an article by Wife No. 4 someday called “Four Rules for How to Be a Good Fourth Wife.”

In looking at what didn’t work in my husband’s past marriages, we both started analyzing his perspective, maturity, sobriety, self-awareness and experience. He gained these things as he grew older, which makes each marriage easier to understand. He was 20 the first time he got married, and 31 the second time. When he married me a year ago, he was 45.

Marriage No. 1: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They were far too young, he hadn’t gotten sober yet and they both grew up and out of it.

Marriage No. 2: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They stopped being able to communicate their needs to each other and he had a malleable moral compass at the time. (Translation: He cheated.)

Our marriage: What works: We love each other and are grown-ass adults who have spent thousands of dollars on therapy to gain self-awareness and compassion. What doesn’t: We forget to have gratitude sometimes, which can lead to petty fights and resentments.

What saves us: We have 87 years combined experience between the two of us and a whole lot of perspective. Neither one of us “majors in the minor” and we are able to draw upon various lifehacks in order to hit a kind of metaphorical reset button — often.

Rule No. 3: Resist the urge to throw his past marriages in his face.

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve said things like, “No wonder you’re twice divorced!” But it’s something I learned to stop saying after the first few major fights (hey I needed three tries, too!). It’s low, cheap, irrelevant, ugly, off-topic, and poisonous. Ask yourself how you’d feel if someone brought up your failed relationships whenever you fought. I myself am once divorced, and my husband has never thrown in my face a similar admonition like: “No wonder you got divorced!” He knows it only feeds the blech. Don’t feed the blech.

Instead, feed the “firsts”! You may be the third wife, but think about it: You have a lot of firsts with your husband. For us, our marriage marked the first time either of us had an official wedding (he had previously done courthouses, I did a chapel in Vegas). It’s the first marriage in which we’ve both continuously fueled each other’s creativity. And it’s the first marriage in which we’ve both been sober.

You may be the third wife — but if you make each other your first priority, you’re guaranteed to be the last.

How a Waitress Taught Me the Best Lessons About Being Likable

What are the secrets of being likable? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Lisa Kirk, Writer, Soul Forward, on Quora:

I learned the secrets of being likeable from a waitress named Debbie.

I was working in a high-end restaurant as a cocktail waitress. The place was known for its steaks and was a hot spot for businessmen. The lunch crowd was made up mostly of suits and ties; a lot of powerful guys who wore beautiful watches and who all had sort of a new car scent about them.

The tip potential from a single shift was huge. Most of us were young, broke waitresses; we quickly got to know the customers and could spot the big spenders the minute they walked through the door.

You had one shot at gaining a customer’s loyalty; from the time they sat down until they paid their bill was your chance to make a big impression. If you did it right, they would reward you with a great tip and choose your section again in the future.

It was high stakes peacocking.

We would each try to be the most requested server. We were required to wear black skirts and white shirts so that we would make subtle improvements to our uniforms in the way of shorter hemlines, tighter shirts, and push-up bras; the whole idea was to get noticed.

We would be charming, and would try different approaches to get them to like us.

Most of us were great at getting first timers to sit in our section, but for some reason they didn’t become regulars. In this type of an environment, regulars are everything.

This was the case for everyone except Debbie.

Debbie was a money maker, big time. I had heard about her during my training period. The server I was shadowing told me the fastest way to get fired is by messing with Debbie.

I had heard stories about her. Customers would forfeit available tables in other sections and wait at the bar until something opened up in her area. She had most of the big spending customers as her regulars. The bartenders and staff loved her; she was the queen of the kingdom.

I finally met her two weeks into my job, and she was not what I had expected.

I had imagined her to be this super model look alike with a tiara practically welded to her head. Going off of her incredible reviews, I had drawn her very differently in my mind.

She was from Tennessee. She had long wavy brownish hair that she pulled back into a messy ponytail. She wore no makeup, had on a regular length black skirt and an oversized men’s button-down white shirt. She was not what I had expected.

She was the girl next door.

So what was it about her that connected so powerfully with everyone? It wasn’t her looks or her sex appeal; Debbie’s magic was her people skills.

I studied her. Seriously, I watched her like an educational film. I wanted to learn her secret. I paid attention to her body language, listened to her tone of voice and dissected her interactions with the customers. I asked people why they liked her so much, and I was able to piece together the anatomy of her social gift.

  1. She was easy. She didn’t need anything in the way of approval from anyone. She didn’t have any expectations of people. She maintained her own self esteem.
  2. She let you be you. You didn’t have to edit yourself around her or apologize for your opinions. You could talk to her openly about anything.
  3. She heard you. There’s a big difference between listening and hearing. She had the ability to interpret what you were trying to say, and understand where you were coming from.
  4. She refused to trash others, ever.
  5. She cleaned up her messes. If she made a mistake, she owned it.
  6. She was comfortable in her own skin. This was a big part of her charm. She liked who she was, felt good about herself.
  7. She was warm. Debbie was like the sun; she was warm and welcoming. People felt good being around her.
  8. She had no expectations. She didn’t do anything with an agenda. She didn’t manipulate people or situations.
  9. She was real. She wasn’t trying to be anyone or anything; she came as she was.
  10. She liked people and understood human nature. Debbie would often say you can’t have a beautiful garden without fertilizer. She knew that people could be ugly and give you crap in life, but the key was not letting it make you hard or bitter. Whatever was thrown at her in life was added to her garden and made her more beautiful as a person.

Debbie was popular because she was real.

She was honest; everything about her was hers. She didn’t alter herself to impress anyone. She didn’t need validation. Being around her was effortless; she didn’t need your constant approval, she didn’t bring along drama, and she accepted you exactly as you were.

She required zero maintenance.

There are so many copies and fakes in the world; people want the genuine article. It doesn’t matter how shiny a piece of glass is; when you put it next to a diamond it loses its luster.

I learned you can’t create who you are and try to pass it off as an original; at best you’ll be a good forgery.

Debbie was the real deal; she was the diamond.

Tired of Being Tired? How to Re-Energize and Be Happy

You’re tired. You’re exhausted from the moment you get up in the morning. It feels like you’ve been plowing the field with a fork. You’re working too hard and not getting enough done. This can get a person down, especially during this busy season. Fatigue can trigger sadness and vice versa.

There’s hope! Short of a serious medical issue, there are several reasons for being tired that can be remedied with just a bit of effort. I’ll list them below and then offer seven simple solutions to help you get more energy and a positive outlook; a rejuvenated way to greet the New Year.

Emotions
Anxiety, depression, fear, grief from loss, stress and the feeling of lack control are all factors that may create a bio-chemical reaction (cortisol and other stress hormones) that if unregulated may wear a person down. With a new year you may be reflecting on the past year and come up with self-criticism and regret. Or you may be anxious about the future, your finances and/or your loved ones. Below are some suggestions on how to release some of the emotional weight so that you are not feeling so exhausted from carrying them.

Time does not heal all wounds but gives us the tools to endure them. ~ Singer Patti Smith’s father

Habits

  • Not enough sleep – Adequate sleep is needed to replenish our body and internal systems so that we are refreshed able to think and feel energized to deal with the day. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep and go to bed at about the same time each day.
  • Too much caffeine – feeling tired may trigger you to drink more caffeine and that becomes a cycle where the caffeine keeps you from getting quality sleep which promotes the desire to ingest more caffeine the next day and so forth.
  • Too much alcohol – taxes the body’s filtering systems, liver, kidneys and also changes the way one thinks and acts, all of which can be tiring.
  • Excessive junk food – empty calories makes the body crave for nutrients and also hinders the body’s absorption of the very nutrients that can replenish the body.

How to Re-Energize

  1. One of the most effective ways to feel less tired is to do something new, break out of your routine. Take a class, research a topic you’re interested in, ask for a new work project and/or develop a fresh hobby. Even small changes like walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator or trying new food/cuisine may help. When monotony or a worry pattern sets in, it oftentimes drains our enthusiasm for life, which results in a feeling of fatigue.
  2. Physical Exercise. The positive endorphins that are created and released in the body from exercise make us feel good and less tired. Endorphins blocks pain receptors and also produce the same positive feelings in the body like morphine. Start or increase your exercise program; do something that is a slight stretch from your current state depending on your current activity level.
  3. Go outside. Being in nature is very healing and it can improve one’s mood. You can combine exercise with being in nature by going for a walk in a park or some other kind of outdoor activity.
  4. Connect with others. Human beings are social animals and we thrive when we have positive social interactions, particularly physical touch. Sharing your concerns with a trusted person may also result in assistance and solutions. Have a meal with others, hike with a friend, make an appointment for a massage, or combine three things that will make you feel better: do an outdoor physical activity with others, your body and moods will thank you for that.
  5. Reassess your priorities. Review the total demands on your time. Perhaps you have very valid reasons for being tired. If you have too much on your plate, decide which ones you can eliminate, delegate or postpone. Just the very act of assessing your commitments may help you relieve some of the tension and stress that comes from having too much to do. Prioritize your tasks based on what is important for you and let go of the ones that are just busy work.
  6. 6. Ask for help. Seek professional and/or spiritual guidance from qualified people if you have an emotional matter that you feel stymied by. Request for assistance to help you get some of your tasks done. If the work is needed, there will be others who can help get it done. Position your appeal as something that is for the common good.
  7. Ask for help from a spiritual source. The power of healing and rejuvenation that may come from a spiritual level has been well documented.

As you move into the New Year, know that you can choose different ways to improve your health and wellbeing. Just by acknowledging the possibility that you can be less tired, you have already started your journey. Here’s to your health, vitality and happiness!

How One Widow Went From Mourning The Passing Of Her Husband To Being A Successful Sex Instructor

“In a nutshell, we do it all! I employ 60 fetish masters so it isn’t hard to find someone for a session. Just like that” says Leona snapping her finger, “The session is paid for and scheduled!” This is Leona, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, and she runs an adult fetish service in which very few things are not on the menu.

Leona says that her online fetish menu was specifically designed to expand the sex lives of people in stale relationships, something she knows little about as there wasn’t anything neither she nor her husband wanted to try, that they DIDN’T try. “When we first met it was seriously the hottest sex I had ever had! The bathroom, the car, in a reception hall BEFORE guests were seated. YES I said a reception hall! We were running late to my cousins wedding and we thought, why sit in the church during the ceremony when we could be the first to the reception! We crept into the venue WHILE the ceremony was going on around the corner one street over and christened it as only the 2 of us could!” Leona describes her married sex life as something they both looked forward to at least 7 times a week.

“He was the love of my life and when he passed, I was devastated. It took some time for me to come around because although our life together wasn’t built around sex, sex was a huge part of it!”
Leona says that a year into mourning was when she came up with the idea to help people in relationships in which the one thing that was missing was an uninhibited sex life. “That’s where I come in OR I send one of my associates in for a session. We specialize, across the board, in pretty much everything. BUT” says Leona, “I draw the line at ANYTHING having to do with children or animals! Anyone comes to me with THAT type of a fantasy or fetish and I REPORT THEM! But let’s say your partner wants to try anal, double penetration maybe bringing in a third party into bed with the two of you, all these things can be scary to someone if the wrong people are brought in. We on the other hand are the right people to incorporate into your sex lives because we teach you how to do it right!” She emphasizes that she isn’t running a brothel and that “you can’t hire us to come out and have sex with you, we’re hired to teach you how to try new things safely.”

Leona says that nine times out of ten, when your partner comes home and wants to try something new, the other person in the relationship automatically wonders WHERE they got this new idea, “Aren’t you turned on anymore?” seems to be THE most common question. “You know, men talk with their friends and we women talk with ours. It’s not that either isn’t happy in the relationship, but it’s like if every week you have spaghetti on Wednesday and grilled fish on Thursday…you know what you’re getting and how it’s going to taste right? But what if you didn’t have that every week, you’d look forward to it that much more when you did have it!”
She goes on to say that so long as 2 consenting adults agree on trying something new, that’s the first step to spicing up their sex life. And, she’s one click away. Literally scheduled for sessions online, one can click on Leona to service your fetish privately in the locale of your choice.

“First of all, you have to be 18 years old or older to navigate my site. Once you’re in, you’re invited to peruse the menu and make your selections. Let’s say you and your significant other want to try anal, you click on that fetish, then click on the instructor of your choice, male or female then you schedule your session on our calendar and finally pay our fee and wala! You’re done!”

Leona says that believe it or not, not everyone knows what they’re doing when trying a new fetish and that’s the reason why they shy away from trying something new. “It should never be about your partner wanting to beat you up in order to get off! It has to be enjoyable for everyone involved!” Leona says that one of the most popular requests is for women to turn the tables on their partners who enjoy marital rape. “Listen, rape is rape! Just because you’re married doesn’t make it your own personal sex buffet. Unless, that’s something you two agree upon. But you should NEVER agree to something because you’re afraid of losing your partner. Sex should be something you look forward to, you shouldn’t be afraid of it!”

Leona says that she only employs sexually open minded people who work with her service on a full time basis. “My fetish masters are just that, masterfully skilled sex operatives who know EXACTLY how a fetish should be enjoyed. There are some fetishes that sincerely need to be spaced out before enjoying too often. Every orifice we have isn’t meant for penetration and once it’s been enjoyed, it may need at least 21 days or so before it can be penetrated again.”

I wonder if Leona is in a relationship and her answer is no. She says that her husband was the love of her life and she doubts she’ll ever meet anyone like him again and she’s ok with that. She also says that she enjoys the sessions she’s incorporated into because it gives her the opportunity to impart a little wisdom upon her employers. “Never take each other for granted and be open to new things. So long as no one is in danger and the main objective is to have a great time sexually? Do it, enjoy it! You only have one life to live!”
I couldn’t have said it better myself Leona! Bravo!

Jennifer Lawrence Says What We’re All Thinking About Being A Bridesmaid

Jennifer Lawrence is all too familiar with the long hours, demanding schedule and slew of difficult personalities that come along with… being a bridesmaid.

Lawrence stars on Vanity Fair’s Holiday 2016 cover. And inside the mag, she reveals that after four times serving as a bridesmaid, she’s done playing a part in friends’ wedding parties.

“Weddings rock, but I will never be a bridesmaid again,” she said. “There needs to be a bridesmaids’ union. It’s horrendous. If anyone asks me again, I’m going to say, ‘No. That part of my life is over. I appreciate the ask.’”

She feels so strongly about it, she apparently plans to forego picking her own.

“If I do ever get married, I don’t think I will have bridesmaids,” she added. “How can I rank my friends?”

Of course, serving as a bridesmaid can be a meaningful and beautiful experience for any friend. But do it a few times and you’ll realize that Lawrence pretty much hit the nail on the head here.

All those in favor of forming a bridesmaids union, say “I!”

Get it before it’s gone. With the licenses for the apparel offerings of President-elect Donald Trump no longer active, there aren’t too many goods left in the market.
On the Trump Organization web site Wednesday, the Donald J. Trump Collection suits, dress shirts and neckwear are prominently displayed, along with an assortment of small leather goods, accessories and eyewear.
Clicking on the apparel tabs brings a potential customer to Amazon, where a two-piece windowpane suit is $ 156.74 and a two-button flat-front wool model is $ 114.99. Neckwear — including an extralong model — ranges from $ 59.50 to $ 85 while a Tattersall dress shirt is $ 26.26 and cufflinks are $ 29.95 to $ 40. All of the merchandise is being sold at a sharp discount.
The small leather-goods tab brings a shopper to a Van Heusen store locator page while the eyewear customer is brought to eyeglasses.com.
According to men’s wear sources, the three companies that had held the licenses for these products — PVH for dress shirts and neckwear, Randa for small leather goods and Peerless Clothing for tailored clothing — are no longer producing any merchandise under the Trump name. “When Terry Lundgren said he was done, everybody dumped the product and stopped making it,” said

4 Things That Comedy Improv Taught Me About Being a Wellness Entrepreneur

For the past four months, I have been spending my Tuesday evenings making a total fool of myself in comedy Improv classes. I enrolled at Just the Funny in Miami to add some ‘funny’ to my life and take a break from working so much. See, I launched a new business last year — an online course and community for health & wellness professionals – and I was spending 12+ hours a day at the computer for many, many months.

When I enrolled in the Improv classes, I expected to laugh a lot, make some friends, maybe even build more on-stage confidence, but I didn’t expect to have ‘a-ha’ insights about my business.

Here’s what Improv comedy classes taught me about being an entrepreneur:

1. You can’t do anything wrong

There are no mistakes in Improv comedy. Every word, phrase or gesture is an opportunity to create something fun and unexpected. Since there is no script, there is no plot or dialogue to follow. You make it up as you go along. The same is true for being an entrepreneur. I can do whatever I want in my business. There is no script, no one-way plan that I have to follow. Sometimes my business or marketing strategies generate a lot of excitement, and sometimes they fall flat – just like on the Improv stage. But just because I don’t get engagement on a particular thing, doesn’t mean that I did something “wrong,” it just means that I need to do something differently until people start smiling again. Which leads me to my next insight…

2. Fail fast, then Keep Going

When you find yourself in a situation that isn’t amusing, which happens a lot in both Improv and business, you need to find your way out fast and keep going. There is nothing more paralyzing to improvising then dwelling in some mental drama about what just happened. If I get stuck in over-thinking, regretting or being embarrassed, I fall apart. Improv classes taught me that there is no shame in telling a joke that doesn’t get a laugh – or launching a product that doesn’t sell – as long as you learn from it. What separates a good improviser from a not-so-good one is her resiliency and her ability to keep going no matter what happens. The faster you fail, and find a new approach, the quicker you can figure out what makes people happy.

3. Commit to it

My Improv teacher hollers from the back of the room, “Commit to it!” It hits me like an electric shock. I stand up taller, speak my words stronger, pay attention closer – and the audience is mesmerized. How true this is for my business, too! If I make a choice and put in half-assed effort, my audience is bored; they don’t care; they aren’t engaged. If I bring my full-energy and enthusiasm to something, they can feel it; it’s contagious; they want more. We don’t have the option in Improv or in business to be lazy. If we don’t commit fully because we are scared or distracted with other things, our performance will stink. We need to show up consistently and commit fully if we want our audience to do the same.

4. Trust Your Partner

On the Improv stage, you only have 2 things that you can rely on – your imagination and your partner. We spend a lot of class time doing weird exercises like feeling each other’s faces and telling each other embarrassing moments so that we can build unconditional trust. This taught me how to lean into my partner instead of trying to be out there on my own. Ironically, this is exactly what I need to do in my business. One of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is how much I need other people to be successful. I can’t do it all by myself. In both Improv and business, the answers to your questions and your next steps are not written in some playbook somewhere, they are in your partner’s eyes.

If you are working in wellness and you need a community to laugh and learn from, join the Women in Wellness Club. We know how to get things done, and have FUN in the process.

Khloe Kardashian on Her Traumatizing First Waxing Experience at 13, Getting Older and Being Inspired by Kylie Jenner

Things don’t always go as expected for Khloé Kardashian. But the completely candid reality TV star is known for rolling with the punches in many aspects of her life, including her personal beauty journey.

Take, for example, the first time she ever got waxed. She didn’t plan on it, but that’s because her mom, Kris Jenner, planned it for her. “My mom has always been very crazy about rituals and routines,” Kardashian tells PeopleStyle recently. “I remember she made me get a facial for the first time, I was like 13, and I guess I’d started having hair under my arms. During my facial, I had someone come and wax my underarms and I was so terrified because she didn’t warn me! I was like, ‘What is happening?!’ I thought that was part of the facial. It was so traumatizing.”

And her surprise waxing actually has a lasting impact psychologically. “I remember I didn’t want a facial for like years cause I thought that came with it,” she said. “It’s funny because my mom is so polished. Most people would be like, ‘This is what you do. Take a razor and so on.’ And my mom was like, ‘We’re waxing this!’” (This set the precedent for Kylie Jenner’s forced manis as a teen, too!)

Yet, at the same time, it’s her family who inspire her to feel beautiful everyday. “I’m a huge energy person—I feed off of other people’s energy, and I try to get them to feed off of mine,” she says. “The people around me make me feel beautiful.”

And that includes sister Kylie Jenner. “I’m so proud of Kylie cause I love when she is bare-faced and at her freest,” she said. “When I was younger, I never wanted to be bare-faced, cause you’re a little more insecure. So I love Kylie’s self-security at a young age.”

RELATED: Why Khloé Kardashian Takes Credit for Kim Kardashian West’s Nude Selfie Twitter War

In fact, it’s both of her youngest Jenner sisters, Kylie, 18, and Kendall, 20, who are some of her main beauty inspirations. “If I am on vacation with Kendall and Kylie, they’re literally Indian-style, copping a squat, in a bikini and I’m like, ‘What!’ But they’ve always had those bodies,” she says. “I’ve just always wanted to be one of those girls. I never wore bikinis as a kid, I’ve never showcased my body like that. I have always been a one-piece girl or I was just didn’t feel comfortable going to the beach with my friends. I am still very appreciative of how hard I have worked for my body now, I just wonder, ‘How did those little bitches get so comfortable?!’”

Khloe Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner Getty

That said, she finally stopped comparing herself to others and started feeling comfortable and confident with her body. “I have grown to have a ton of self-love, and that’s something I had to work on, so I am at a place where I just feel beautiful within my own skin,” she says. “But I have always wondered, when can I just sit Indian-style? I don’t know if I will ever be, but I’m not like, ‘God I need to be in a turtleneck.’ But being older, and now finally being like, ‘OK, I can be in a bathing suit around my friends.’”

So, is Kardashian afraid of getting older? “In 10 years, I don’t know what I am going to look like—facial, hair color, body, anything,” she says. “But I also think that’s the fun of life. I hope I age gracefully. I believe in lasers and fillers—whatever makes you happy. But I am not obsessive about that stuff.”

“I just like to take care of myself,” she adds. “I sleep with oils and lotions on my face every night and I focus on being healthy from the inside out, taking 20 vitamins every morning and drinking water. That’s how I want to age gracefully.”

On Being Found Unconscious in a Nevada Brothel

Now that it appears, thankfully, that former NBA player and Kardashian in-law, Lamar Odom, is going to be okay, we are free to banter about the preposterous serendipity of being found unconscious in, of all places, a licensed whorehouse tucked away on the remote and barren landscape of the Mojave Desert.

In addition to emitting a genuine sigh of relief at Odom’s recovery, coupled, admittedly, with a raised eyebrow and roll of the eyes at the whole string of indignities that had to accompany such a circumstance, we are also free to speculate as to who among us would pay the greatest “public relations” price for such notoriety.

Let us consider 10 stations in life and rank them accordingly. Here they are in descending order, with the person paying the steepest price listed first, and the person paying, arguably, no price at all (indeed, rising in stature as a result), listed last.

1. CLERGYMAN. It’s no contest. Despite prostitution being legal in parts of Nevada, no one who makes his living communing with God and offering spiritual counseling to the public is going to beat a seedy rap like this. Legal or not, his career is going to take an enormous hit. Unless his book is a bestseller, he’ll probably have to find a real job.

2. POLITICIAN. Ditto for an elected official, even one representing a district in Nevada. It’s bad enough visiting a brothel and paying strangers to have sex with you, but being so recklessly uninhibited that you allow yourself to black out, and have to be scraped off the floor by paramedics will likely render you “unelectable,” even as a Democrat.

3. CEO. It’s not the sex we object to, it’s the manner in which it was obtained. You run a company, you employee hundreds of people, and yet you can’t find a local woman to accommodate you? You have to schlepp all the way out to the desert to get relief? CEO’s should appear confident and resolute. This makes you appear needy.

4. DOCTOR. Not just any doctor. It has to be a cardiologist, neurosurgeon, psychiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, otherwise it won’t resonate. If you’re a podiatrist, proctologist or acne doctor, the obloquy will be minimal, and no one except your patients, fellow MD’s and attending nurses are likely to care.

5. ANCHOR MAN. It’s a job that requires presentation, steadiness, credibility and, dare I say, trust. Sorry, but you relinquish the whole package when you party yourself right into a coma.

6. MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER. You show up in a $ 3,000 suit and a $ 400 haircut, and charge $ 150,000 to address an audience on the topic of “Putting the Entrepreneurial Spirit to Work for You,” and then people read that you dropped $ 75,000 during a visit to a Nevada cathouse called the Love Ranch? You’ll bounce back, but it’s impossible to come away totally unscathed. Maybe lower your quote to $ 100,000.

7. AVANT GARDE ARTIST (poet, painter, sculptor). Fortunately, because people aren’t certain what you do in the first place, you will be given an inordinate amount of slack. If you were a construction worker or fry cook, they’d want to see you hang by your jimmy-whatnots, but given that you’re an existential poet, they’ll keep a respectful distance.

8. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE. People, especially men, might wonder why you “have to pay for it,” but because you’re a celebrity jock the public will continue to judge you by what you do on the field, diamond or court, not what you do for recreation. Virtuoso athletic performance trumps almost everything.

9. ACTOR. Britain has its royal family, and America has its Hollywood actors. Unless it involves violence directed toward another person, we’re willing to forgive the most atrocious self-destructive behavior. Because we see them as creative geniuses, the normal rules don’t apply. It’s part envy, part admiration, part hero worship. We’re hooked.

10. ROCK STAR. Not only will his career not take a hit, but once word spreads and everyone learns what happened, he will become even more popular, more notorious. Imagine if it were Keith Richards (not now, but when he was younger). His reputation would not only have remained untarnished, it would’ve been sanctified.

Best of luck, Lamar. Seriously. Loved you with the Lakers. Get well, dude.

Justin Bieber Opens Up To Complex Magazine About Being Arrested

Justin Bieber is Complex magazine’s latest cover star.

The 21-year-old, who was photographed by David Black for the mag, opens up about everything from his infamous arrest in Miami to how he deals with all the critics.

Speaking about that time he urinated in a bucket at a club, the Biebs said, “Honestly, I think the pissing in the bucket wasn’t as big as people made it seem. Just because, dude, think about it. Imagine, you hear that fucking Ozzy Osbourne pisses backstage. Immediately, ‘Oh, he’s a freaking rock star!’ As soon as I do it, ‘He’s being a brat.'”

He continued, “Dude, what is bratty about pissing in a bucket? I had to go piss — we all have to pee.” He has a point — we all do have to pee, but at least most of us have the decency to do it in a restroom, even if said restroom is on the opposite side of where we are.

The singer also called out the Miami police (who arrested and charged him for DUI and drag racing last year), saying, “they just wanted press.”

“I never was speeding; I never was drag racing … The cop supposedly wanted to be famous for arresting celebrities, and someone had heard him say that prior to that,” he said. “He was like, ‘Put your hands on the hood!’ I was like, what? I lifted my hands and I was like, ‘What do you mean, what’s going on?’ He was like, “I told you, put your hands on the hood! Now you’re under arrest for resisting arrest!'”

“I felt it, dude. I was just like, Oh, they’re trying to get me right now at any cost. I went in, and I’m telling you, that 24 hours sucked. It was really cold. That was the worst part.” Poor Biebs.

Excerpt: … TREASURE CHAPTER I THE WISE MAN AND THE FOOt THERE is no justification for the idea that cousins ought to have similar tastes and aspirations any more than that they ought to be alike in form and feature. And yet when people were told that George Harvey and Thomas Ewins were cousins they would generally say: "What! Those two cousins! Well! Who would have thought it!" Certainly the cousins had a few things in common: they had no other near relatives and they lived together, sharing the same joint, the same dish of vegetables, the same pudding, the same loaf, the same domestic et ceteras, provided by Mrs. Bowers. They did not, however, share the same philosophy. They did not often discuss it–as philosophy. But every now and then they raised voices in scorn, each finely overflowing with contempt for the other. They had both had to make their way in life as they had been left fatherless at a tender age, and had sown and reaped for themselves almost from the early teens. Harvey was a printer and for some few years past had managed the business formerly belonging to Edward Gollam, but now the sole property of his sorrowful and not well-to-do widow. When Mr. Gollam died and left his widow with four girls and a printing business, Ewins told his cousin to ask for a partnership, or start printing on his own account. But Mrs. Gollam wondered so pathetically how she "could manage with four girls; if one had been a boy it would have been different, particularly if he had been old enough to step in his father's shoes, but girls . . . and how could she manage a business that she knew nothing of?" And when a woman (or man for that matter) looked pathetically helpless George Harvey was always touched. It was quite true that George Harvey might have made…

Being Calm and Mindful for Your Child

The school year is just starting all over the country; children will be encountering new teachers, higher expectations, peers who may have grown or matured in varying degrees over the summer, and changing alliances among those peers. Your child may face a calm re-entry to the school year, or may be distressed to find himself in very unfamiliar, and unhappy, territory. Your child may look to you for comfort and support; how are you going to handle your role?

While every parent wants his or her child to be happy, successful, and well-liked, we don’t always get our wish. If your child is the one who comes home with a long face and teary eyes, be prepared to offer assistance that will build his skill-set and improve his level of resilience; comfort him, and help him search for what will help him the most. This would NOT mean providing solutions and answers, but helping him discover those solutions and answers on his own.

If your child is upset over a school issue, do not become overemotional about the issue.

  • Stop and think: What else could be true? What might my child have left out of the story (intentionally or unintentionally)? Do not relate this situation to one that involved you when you were young. Realize this is a completely new situation that involves your child, not you.
  • Ask questions. Exactly what happened? What were the responses? What did you say? How did you say it? How do you think it sounded/seemed to the other purple involved? What led up to the situation?
  • Who else was there? Was there someone you could have asked for help about this at the time? Is this a big deal, or just a little something that happened? Is this worth worrying about, or could it be forgotten so tomorrow can be a fresh start?
  • If someone says something about this incident tomorrow, how can your child respond that is neither unkind nor sarcastic to anyone, but treats the situation as no big deal so things don’t have to get out of hand?
  • Is there an adult at school to whom your child could speak about this privately? Is there a teacher, counselor, administrator, or nurse who he trusts to keep a confidence, and give good advice?
  • What can your child try, on his own, to solve this problem? What could be done differently next time? Or, with whom can your child spend his time instead of with that person(s)?
  • Responding calmly to events that involve neither hurt nor intimidation, nor danger of any kind, lets your child know that not every issue needs to be treated like a major catastrophe. Sometimes things just don’t go our way; we can learn to accept this gracefully, and then move on to the next event.

If situations are reoccurring for your child, it may be advisable for you, as the adult, to speak confidentially to a teacher or counselor. Ask if they are aware of the event. Ask if they feel you need to be involved, or how they can help your child move forward. The object is to avoid over-parenting, a pattern that can compromise children’s autonomy, mastery, and personal growth. Rather, help your child grow into a competent, kind, resourceful person who has the resilience to survive the tough times.

Good luck; let me know how it goes.

Being in Love

I want to feel joy for joy’s sake
Not wanting to earn it
Or reach it
Or arrive finally at its door
After working
And seeking
After years of wracking pursuit, falling at the threshold
Begging for mercy and entry and somewhere to rest and sleep in peace.

No.

I want to awaken there
Dancing on the head of that pin
Smiling in my sleep
And rising to a peppy dawn
I want to jump up in inspiration for the new day
I want to take pen to paper
And explode upon the page,
my existence on this planet
At this time, at this place, in this body, with this mind, and countenance, and spirit and soul
With these eyeballs, and ears, and fingers, and taste buds, and ability to experience aromas, exotic and sublime, miraculously breathing in and out, and in and out again.

I want my moments of being alive to be a celebration of the moments I get to be alive
Love the people I get to love
Feel the love of those whose energy, flow, willingness for interbeing, makes me somehow feel loved, too.

I want to bathe in child-like wonder
For innocent experience, naked awareness, clear seeing
Present a truer reality
A realization longstanding
A wisdom
Transcendent of deluded mind, frightened mind, ego mind, hurt-child mind
To original mind, mirror-like
and free
I stand, reflecting awe, embracing mystery, curious, openhearted, immersed in the now and loving the opportunity to be in love with this very life.

Ballerina Misty Copeland Talks Being Unapologetically Black And More

This is an excerpt from Essence magazine’s September 2015 cover story “Stepping Up” about American Ballet Theatre ballerina Misty Copeland. The article was written by Julee Wilson, senior fashion editor at The Huffington Post.

“…One of Copeland’s most endearing qualities, beyond dancing on her toes and making it look easy, is the fact that she’s so unapologetically Black. ‘It’s easy for someone who isn’t Black or other or who has never experienced racism to dismiss what I’m saying…it’s easier for them to say, ‘Why do you focus so much on that? You’re a beautiful dancer.’ But the reason I’m here and I have this voice is because I’m Black.’ Copeland tells me that she has never tried to pretend that ballet doesn’t have a race problem. She recounts times fellow dancers told her that some American Ballet Theatre (ABT) staff members were overheard saying, ‘Misty stands out too much because of her skin color.’ With that said, Copeland’s singular mission is changing the landscape of ballet by promoting Project Plié, an initiative launched in September 2013 by ABT with Copeland on the advisory board to increase racial and ethnic representation at ballet companies around the country. Copeland also mentors several dancers on the rise. At the moment she has more than a dozen mentees (including identical twin brothers Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad, who are currently standout students at the School of ABT). ‘I’m going to continue to be who I am and my experiences as a Black woman have made me who I am. All of a sudden now that I’m in this position, I’m not going to say, ‘I’m just a dancer.’ It’s a huge deal because I’m a Black woman. That’s why it’s a big deal…”

Help Your Child Make Friends By Being Irresistibly Awesome

Are playdates a time for you to kick back and relax while your child is finally, blessedly, occupied? Don’t let yourself off the hook that easily, you slacker. Don’t you know your kid’s popularity and self-esteem are riding entirely on your ability to be the hook that draws friends back to your house as easily as dirt is drawn to your stupid beige carpeting? Anyway, here are some tried and true ways to be That Mom that kids whisper about, and not just because you forgot to take off your whitening strips and talked with a lisp at pickup.

1. Hover.

Every minute that your kid and his friend play on their own is another minute that can’t be spent on papier mache masks of dinosaurs. I mean, he SAID his friend liked dinosaurs. Look, you can use the popsicle sticks to make skull crests. Expert tip: The older the kids are, the more they like papier mache.

2. Reminisce.

You used to play Barbie too! You had the Dream House and you would make Ken pick Barbie up there to take her to prom. Other times, you would make Barbie and Ken into parents and Skipper was their sassy teenage daughter. You think you actually have some photos of you playing Barbie, if everyone wants to join you in the attic with the albums. It’ll just take a sec.

3. Tell funny jokes.

Expert tip: Teenagers secretly like really corny knock knock jokes. Make sure to have at least 50 at your disposal. If they aren’t laughing by joke #10, bring out the ones that involve puns. Oh wait, that’s all of them!

4. Fit in.

If they’re playing dress up, you play dress up. If they’re playing rock band, you play rock band. If they’re giggling about boys they like in school, in the privacy of your daughter’s room, use a cleverly secreted baby monitor to pick up on their conversation, and yell loudly upstairs: “Josh is definitely cuter!” Total bonding moment.

5. Provide snacks.

Endless snacks. Every time they try to leave, give them something else to eat. Preferably filled with sugar and food coloring. Nothing says, “I’m going to drop my kid off here every afternoon” to parents like a kid stuffed with cookies and Pixie Stix an hour before dinner. Bam, you’ve made your kid a best friend.

6. Buy them stuff.

To really make a hit, buy your kid’s friend something really expensive and/or something you already know he’s getting for his birthday from his parents. Don’t worry, he doesn’t look uncomfortable, he looks grateful.

7. The more the merrier.

Host your book club at the same time as your teenage son has a friend over to play video games. When Martha starts crying about her divorce again, as she’s wont to do after too many sangrias, ask your son’s friend if he agrees that a beautiful woman like Martha will meet a new guy in no time, and one that isn’t a narcissistic controlling jerk. Relatedly…

8. Ask them for advice.

Your daughter’s friend has excellent fashion taste. What would she like more than telling you which of your jeans from ten years ago make you look svelte and which make you look dowdy? It’s fun for everyone. Make sure to tell her that the only reason you gained those extra pounds was comfort eating during that rough patch in your marriage a couple years ago. She’s very wise for a 7-year-old.

9. Invite their parents.

When your child’s friend’s mom excitedly confirms, “This is drop off right? So convenient because you live right by Ikea, and — ” make sure to cut her off and invite her for coffee and homemade pie. Don’t be shy to tell her how you found a special recipe on Pinterest for just this occasion and threw out two pies that came out wrong before this one. It’s so cute when moms and their kids are all friends together.

10. Invite them yourself.

If for some reason, you’ve tried all of the above tactics, and your poor, socially inept child has ended up with fewer friends visiting the house rather than more, don’t lose heart. Reach out to your kids’ friends yourself, via social media, text or, even better, handwritten notes. Don’t let your child become friendless on your watch. And your wedding video isn’t going to watch itself!

After Being Denied 73 Years Ago, 92-Year-Old Black Woman Finally Receives Her Library Card

Ninety-two-year-old Pearl Thompson was a student at Shaw University in 1942 when she attempted to check out a book from the Olivia Raney Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her school, which is an HBCU, didn’t carry the book she needed for a history class so she visited the local library. According to her daughter, Deborah Thompson, Pearl was denied a library card because she was black, so instead, she was sent to the building’s basement to read the book.

“I expected to go in and get a book,” Pearl told News & Observer.

Seventy-three years later, Pearl returned to Raleigh with her daughter and granddaughter and finally got her library card.

Pearl Thompson signs the back of her library card.

“She was fighting good health but she was determined to make this trip,” Deborah told HuffPost. She said Pearl is currently battling kidney disease and suffers from heart issues — but she wouldn’t let that stop her.

The Olivia Raney Library was the city’s first public library and later became a part of the larger Wake County Public Library system. In the 1960’s, it merged with Richard B. Harrison Library — a library Deborah said Pearl helped to launch — which only served blacks at the time. The Olivia Raney Library, which is now closed, serves as a local history library and the administration at Cameron Village Library, which opened right after Olivia Raney Library closed, held a ceremony in Pearl’s honor last week.

“We all felt that the presentation of Mrs. Thompson’s library card needed to be honored with a ceremony and we also wanted the opportunity to rectify a mistake of the past,” Ann Burlingame, deputy director of Wake County Public Libraries, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

After college, Pearl, who has always been an advocate for education, went on to become a teacher in Raleigh for nearly fifty years.

“I was determined that when I became a teacher every child would have an opportunity to learn to read,” Pearl said at the ceremony. “A little boy [had] Down’s syndrome and they said he would never learn to read. And I taught him to read. Even to the point he wrote books himself.”

Thompson moved to Ohio with her husband after 12 years as a teacher in Raleigh, and she now lives in Cincinnati where she taught for 37 years. Decades after her days in college, she said she doesn’t hold a grudge against the library and their poor treatment.

“I don’t hold any kind of hate in my heart, because that doesn’t do it,” she said. “That doesn’t get you there.”

Eli Roth On Being ‘Almost Killed’ By Fire While Filming ‘Inglourious Basterds’

Quentin Tarantino films have a distinctive style, most recognizably characterized by a crazy amount blood and guts. In one of the more memorable scenes from his 2009 revenge-on-the-Nazis movie “Inglourious Basterds,” Sgt. Donny Donowitz, aka “The Bear Jew,” literally shoots Hitler’s face off in a burning French cinema. The sequence is unforgettable, but it almost came at the cost of several lives, according to Eli Roth, the actor who played Donowitz.

When Roth dropped by HuffPost Live to discuss his Shark Week talk show “Shark After Dark,” host Josh Zepps asked about the scene and the danger it created for the cast and crew.

“Yeah, we were almost killed doing that sequence,” Roth replied casually.

With the set being built on a “fire-stage,” the fires in the scene were supposed to be controlled. But when the scene was actually filmed, with all the final set pieces like flags and seats actually in the room, the fires grew much bigger and hotter than expected.

“[The flames] were spreading so exponentially,” Roth remembered. “They said if we were in there another 15 seconds, the stage we were on would have collapsed and we all would have been killed.”

Roth and the crew luckily got out right before the situation could have taken a turn for the worst, but clearly no one is safe in Tarantino’s world.

Watch Roth discuss this near-disaster in the video above, and click here for his full HuffPost Live conversation.
