Coconut Oil Called ‘Pure Poison’ by Harvard Professor Who Warns Against Its Supposed Benefits

Coconut oil is under fire again.

The controversial food started gaining popularity in 2011 for its supposed promise of supporting the immune system and helping people lose weight, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Coconut oil has, however, fallen from grace in recent years as some health experts have spoken out against it. Sales of the ingredient reportedly fell in 2017.

In one particularly harsh criticism, Dr. Karin Michels, an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, repeatedly called coconut oil “poison” in a German talk she gave titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors,” USA Today reported.

A video of her speech was posted in July and has been viewed more than 900,000 views on YouTube.

RELATED: 12 Ways Stars Use Coconut Oil in Their Beauty Routines

“I can only warn you urgently about coconut oil,” Michels said. “This is one of the worst foods you can eat.”

According to Business Insider, Michels said that coconut oil is more harmful than lard because of its saturated fatty acids, which can clog coronary arteries.

Dr. Frank Sacks, a nutrition professor at the Harvard Chan School, explained the ramifications of consuming saturated fatty acids to The Boston Globe: “Coconut oil is very high in saturated fat, and that raises your LDL cholesterol — bad cholesterol,” he said. “It’s unhealthy to be eating it.”

Several experts agree with Michels’ and Sacks’ assessments.

In The New York TimesDr. Alice H. Lichtenstein, a Tufts professor of nutrition science and policy, noted that “there’s virtually no data to support the hype” of coconut oil as a healthy ingredient.

RELATED: Celebs Swear By Coconut Oil — Here Are Six Beauty Items You Need Right Now

Lichtenstein said that “there appears to be no independent benefit of consuming it,” although research about coconut oil’s impact on the body is limited.

CNN reports that a 2016 study found that 72% of Americans — but only 37% of nutritionists — believe that coconut oil is healthy.

Dr. Tom Brenna, a Cornell professor of human nutrition, told The New York Times, “If you’re going to use coconut oil, make sure you get virgin oil … And, of course, everything in moderation.”

Three in a Bed: The Benefits of Sleeping with Your Baby

Only since Victorian times has it been standard practice for mothers and fathers to send their babies to sleep alone, away from the parental bed – often in another room. This book reveals how babies who sleep with their parents benefit by getting virtually a full night’s sleep. The author explains the advantages of this radical form of baby care, including its benefits for breastfeeding mothers, reviews the history of babies in the bed and, through interviews with parents, explores attitudes to the idea. The book also contains a fresh perspective on the tragedy of cot death, as well as practical advice on how to sustain your sex life, hints on safety in the bed, answers to all the common objections and dealing with the moment when the baby leaves its parents’ bed.

Smiles Mean Money in France, But Hidden Benefits Are Even More Enriching

“A person who smiles a lot is either a fool or an American.”
— Russian adage

The French government has launched a new  campaign  to make its citizens smile in an effort to promote a more welcoming environment for tourists. But science tells us that French authorities will be beating their heads against the wall if they really think they can coax aloof Parisians to put on a happy face.

Because, well, there’s no smiling in France.

Or so say psychologists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who have found that the most expressive nations —  those with citizens who are quickest to crack a smile – are those with heavy immigrant populations. That puts the homogeneous France near the bottom of the list with Russia and Japan. Among the leaders: Canada, Brazil and the good ol’ U.S.A.

So, what is it about living in the world’s melting pots that puts smiles on the faces of their citizenry? Simply put, a smile is the mother tongue. It bridges language barriers, predicts trust and signals friendly intentions among people of disparate origin.

And conversely, it is a lack of smiles, among other things, that has given France a reputation for being a difficult place to visit, especially if you don’t speak the language.

This isn’t the first time the French have tried to legislate smiles to convey warmth to tourists. The current effort is similar to campaigns in  2003  and 2009 , when the tourism board set up “smile ambassadors” at the nation’s most-visited spots. But by all accounts, the efforts of the police du sourire fell flat. Those smiles turned – or stayed – upside down.

What Happens to Our Brains When We Smile

There is fascinating research about the power of an upturned mouth. Smiling activates the release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and serotonin, that help  fight off stress. Having  too little of these brain chemicals has been linked to depression. When we smile, we also trigger the release of “happy hormones,” including  endorphins, the same chemicals that give us that “runner’s high” after exercising. Even aping a smile can spark a feeling of  happiness  and  reduce stress. Charles Darwin was the first to suggest that one’s emotions could be enhanced by one’s expressions, positing that just the  act  of smiling produces positive emotion.

Fast forward more than 100 years and “positive emotion” leads off renowned positive psychologist Martin Seligman’s five-sided PERMA model of the traits that foster well-being. According to Seligman, there are two kinds of smiles, the “Duchenne smile” and the “Pan American” smile. The Duchenne smile (named for neurologist Guillaume Duchenne) is involuntary and genuine. It is a broad smile that forms wrinkles on the outer edges of the eyes (i.e. crow’s feet). On the other hand, the Pan Am smile (the forced smile of flight attendants from the long-defunct airline), is inauthentic. It involves only the muscles of the mouth. (To see if you can spot the fake from the real smile,  take this quiz  from the BBC.)

But back to our poker-faced friends around the world: In the UW-Madison study, researchers examined the psychology of smiling in 726 people from nine countries and compared the results for each country with its immigration numbers. Participants were asked what constituted a good reason to smile, with options like, “is a happy man,” “to sell you something,” or “feels inferior to you.”

The results? Countries with more immigration over the last 500 years were more likely to interpret the smile as a happy or friendly gesture.

In countries with less diverse pasts, such as France, Russia and Japan, the act of  smiling  is more complex. Japanese people will grin to  mask negative feelings. The Japanese tend to control their expression of emotion so much so that people there have been  given instruction in the art of the smile. Meanwhile, the French are so notorious for not smiling that the British tourism group VisitBritain released a guidebook with tips for U.K. hoteliers to avoid offending guests from other nations. “Don’t exchange a smile or make eye contact with anyone from France who you do not know,” the guidebook states.

But can we equate the act of smiling with true happiness? In a paper called “The French Unhappiness Puzzle,” economist Claudia Senik argues that France’s “cultural mentality” makes the French far less happy than their wealth and lifestyle would predict. Senik’s research suggests that French unhappiness is due in large part to “multi-dimensional” dissatisfaction and a low level of trust in other people. She says policies to address unhappiness in France should start in early childhood.

A smile, real or fake, is a good starting point, and the bigger the grin, the better. Researchers at  Wayne State University analyzed the smiles of 230 Major League Baseball players culled from their 1952 trading cards to test how positive emotions affect longevity. The intensity of the players’ smiles was compared with life data for the men, controlling for body mass index, education, career length and other factors. As it turned out, the players with the broadest smiles lived seven years longer.

The Big Picture

The UW-Madison researchers believe there are public policy implications that come with exposure to, and understanding of, diverse cultures living within the same borders. For example, said lead author Paula Niedenthal, citizens “may be more or less willing to pay for universal healthcare, because they empathize differently with in-group and out-group members.”

So let’s hope the French Smile Revolution is a winner this time around. It’ll build trust among tourists and natives alike, and lift moods all around. Personally, I hope the friendly efforts penetrate deeper than a superficial strategy aimed at fiscal gain, because we don’t have to excavate ancient history to see how the smile has been  used as a  propaganda  tool.

Here in the free world, I highly recommend smiling. And go all the way. You can fake it ’til you make it, but the Duchenne smile is a  more powerful mood changer  than the perfunctory one flashed at the Pan Am jet-setters.

3 Surprising Beauty Benefits Of Lavender

beauty benefits of lavender
Photo: Getty Images

Ah, lavender. Just thinking about the plant brings on feelings of relaxation. Sipping on tea made out of its leaves, or smelling its scent will calm your mind or help you sleep better. But did you know that you could also use this purple flowering plant for homemade beauty treatments?

Lavender has been used through the ages for of its cleansing and healing properties. Romans started using it to scent and purifying their baths centuries ago, ancient Egyptians turned its essential oil into a perfume for the mummification process and people burned bundles of lavender during the Great Plague of 1665 in London to try to ward off infectious diseases.

Whether used alone or with other soothing ingredients, there are plenty of reasons why you should keep this herb handy. Here are three surprising uses for lavender.

1. Acne treatment. Most people with acne don’t realize that a plant oil such as lavender won’t clog pores, according to Marina Peredo, a board certified dermatologist at SkinInfluence NYC. “The antiseptic and antibacterial properties may be a more natural solution to mild acne,” she says. To create your own facial toner, Peredo recommends combining a few drops of lavender oil to witch hazel. The lavender works to heal and treat breakouts, while the witch hazel tones your complexion. Dab the solution onto a cotton ball and apply to cleansed skin.

2. Scalp rinse. If you’ve tried just about every dandruff shampoo to relieve dry, itchy scalp, don’t give up hope until you’ve mixed up the lavender hair rinse by Amy Jirsa, a master herbalist and yoga instructor. In her book “The Herbal Goddess,” Jirsa shares a recipe that combines dried lavender steeped in boiled water and apple cider vinegar to make a nourishing rinse that will remove build-up, alleviate irritation and restore the natural pH balance of your scalp. Watch her explain the steps on YouTube.

3. Wound care. Suffering from a bug bite? Gary Goldfaden, a dermatologist and founder of Goldfaden MD skincare, suggests smoothing on a bit of lavender oil to reduce the swelling and minimize itching. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, it also helps to soothe wounds and improve the development of scar tissue, which can be beneficial to healing the skin.

Goldfaden notes that many people have allergic reactions to lavender, most commonly in the form of skin rashes. If you have more sensitive skin, Peredo recommends mixing it with natural oils or even your regular moisturizer. But you should always perform a patch test or consult with a physician before trying any homemade beauty recipe.

How do you incorporate lavender into your beauty regimen? Tell us in the comments section.

10 Benefits of Faithfulness

“Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?”
–Proverbs 20:6

We live in a society of constant progression. I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t any construction being done on the highways. Every day we see a new release of something: the next best phone, the next best car, the next best shoes. We desire the latest and greatest in every aspect of life. Sadly, it’s becoming that way in our relationships too.

I’ve never known men to be faithful to woman. In my lifetime I can’t recall ever meeting a man who prided himself on his faithfulness to his woman. It was a known fact among men that we would take what we could get, when we could get it. The closest thing to a faithful man that I met was in college, when one of my teammates said that because he was faithful to his girlfriend, all he would allow himself to do was go on dates with other women. I don’t think his girlfriend would have approved if she knew. Then of course you meet the men who want praise from women online, so they claim to be faithful in the comment section of posts like this. Then of course you have the women who think they understand men and swear that they’ve met millions of faithful men, but for some reason they’re single still. And lastly, there’s the women who thought their dads were Superman and could do no wrong but had no clue what they were doing behind their backs.

There are faithful men. I’m sure of that now.

For a long time I’d lost faith in men and our ability to be faithful to women. On the other hand I saw women as perfect beings who could do no wrong unless wronged by men. Then, over time, I began to see a different side of women. I’d reach out to women in search of matches for my male clients, and 90 percent of the women would say they were single. Then, once they found out I wasn’t asking for myself, they were in a committed relationship all of a sudden. I slowly began to lose faith in all of mankind’s ability to be faithful — faithful to our jobs, to our kids, or to our spouses.

Then I looked in the mirror and saw that I was a part of the problem as well. All my life I’d jumped from woman to woman, always looking for an upgrade as if I were dealing with cars. I was no different from any other man I knew. I decided to try something different. I decided to be faithful.

“If a man can love one woman without lying, cheating, or misleading, he can do anything!”
–Tony A. Gaskins Jr.

Many women were shocked and appalled when reading that quotation, but less than 1 percent had ever experienced a man who was 100-percent faithful to them. So what was so shocking? The truth of the matter!

I decided to be faithful to my wife from the day I married her. It’s very hard when you’re wired to reproduce and replenish the Earth and this unexplainable desire burns inside you. Any honest man will tell you that we desire to be with every woman we are attracted to. So to suppress that desire is one of the hardest things a man will do in his life.

The results of faithfulness:

  1. A peace beyond my understanding
  2. Chronic happiness
  3. An uncontrollable sense of pride
  4. A strong confidence
  5. Love that feels like a fairy tale
  6. A secure woman by my side
  7. A drama-free love life
  8. An incomparable sex life
  9. A real connection with one human being
  10. Unexplainable and uncontainable success

Being faithful to one woman has been the most challenging thing for me, considering my background as a womanizer, college athlete, poet, ladies’ man, etc. I wanted to be normal and cheat like every other guy I knew. I wanted to fit in. I wanted to make myself feel like I was more of a man by the amount of women I could get. Now things are different. I’m on a real-love movement. I’m even doing real-love seminars around the country for free. I pride myself on being faithful to my wife. I made mistakes early on in our relationship, and I even pushed her to places she didn’t want to be. Now it’s all good. We are about to celebrate seven years of marriage, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Once you allow yourself to build a real connection with one person, you’ll never want to trade it. For a lot of women, this is very easy to do, and they can’t understand why it’s so hard for men. Maybe you’re not meant to understand, because if you understood men fully, you may run the other way for the rest of your life.

To the guys reading this: If you’ve found that woman you can trust and build with, give faithfulness a fair shot. Settle down and love all of her and only her. Be faithful to your woman and watch the doors be unlocked in every other area of your life. You’ll experience a peace and clarity about life that you didn’t think was possible. Trust me. I’ve done it all when it comes to relationships, and nothing in the world compares with this feeling. I’m not writing this for praise or applause. I’m writing this because I want every human on Earth to experience what love really feels like when you have two fully committed people.

Let love love you!

Blessings,
Tony Gaskins
