According to The New York Times, women in New York City just aren’t as into biking as men are.
One of the main reasons: fashion.
The Times reported that women tend to have wardrobe concerns, especially when it comes to riding a bike to work. Personal stylist Yael Steren told the paper that she advises clients who commute by bike to bring a change of clothes with them. “The more polished and well put-together you are, people will take you more seriously,” she said.
Photographer and cyclist Sam Polcer begs to differ. “It’s a myth that you have to wear spandex or your sweaty gym clothes if you’re going to ride a bike,” said Polcer, who founded The Preferred Mode, a blog that features stylish riders doing their thing. He’s photographed women wearing anything from heels to maxi skirts while riding their bikes. “What’s been most surprising to me is that you actually can ride a bike in heels, you just don’t put your heel on the pedal.”
