California Net Neutrality Bill Heads to Governor’s Desk

California lawmakers have greenlit a net neutrality bill that will be the strongest government-mandated protections in the country, but are likely to wind up in a courtroom battle with the FCC. The bill still needs Governor Jerry Brown’s signature to become law, however. The state Senate voted to pass the legislation on Friday, a day […]

Bill Clinton Pinch Hits for Chelsea at Mother’s Day Luncheon

When the pinch hitter at the 40th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon happens to be Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, one can’t be too disappointed.
His daughter, Chelsea Clinton, one of the recipients of the Outstanding Mother Awards, was stuck in Omaha, Neb., and couldn’t get a plane out, so her father happily obliged to accept the award on her behalf.
Clinton told some endearing stories about his daughter, who is vice chair of the Clinton Foundation.
“Here’s what I’d like you to know about my child. In some ways she had a remarkably privileged upbringing though we weren’t wealthy by conventional standards until I got out of the White House. I had the lowest net worth of any president ever elected since World War II. I was governor for 12 years, but it was always tough,” said Clinton. He explained that Chelsea started reading the newspaper at six years old and he was in a very hot reelection campaign, and she read things that people were saying about him.
“So I talked to Hillary at breakfast every morning in the election year — 1986 — and we turned it into a political debate. Three people were running and people were saying I was

Bill Cunningham to Be Focus of Upcoming Exhibition at the New York Historical Society

BILL’S NEW YORK: Street photographer Bill Cunningham was unquestionably a man of the city. The sidewalks of New York were his round-the-clock runway. Now the New York Historical Society has announced a special exhibition, “Celebrating Bill Cunningham,” that will be view on June 8 through Sept. 9.
Friends and friends’ family members of The New York Times lensman, who died in 2016 at the age of 87, provided the wide-ranging items for the show. Some New Yorkers will recognize the bicycle he used to pedal to and from assignments regardless of the weather or the hour. There’s also the “Bill Cunningham Corner” street sign that was temporarily installed at the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, the photographer’s preferred perch. Visitors to the Upper West Side museum will also find his first camera, an Olympus Pen-D 35mm, and his signature sparrow blue jacket. SUNY Revokes Honorary Degrees to Bill Cosby and James Levine

SUNY TAKES A STAND: The State University of New York said Thursday it has rescinded the honorary degrees awarded to Bill Cosby and James Levine.
Cosby had been awarded an honorary degree by the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2000.
Levine, music director emeritus and artistic director of the Metropolitan Opera, had been awarded honorary degrees jointly in 1996 from the SUNY Colleges of Optometry and SUNY Potsdam.
“Today we continue to take a stand against sexual misconduct,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson. “The actions that led to the recent conviction of Bill Cosby and the compelling evidence against James Levine are inexcusable and oppose the values and mission of our system. It is for this reason that SUNY revokes their honorary degrees.”
Cosby was convicted last week on three counts of aggravated indecent assault in a sexual assault case brought against him.
As reported on Monday, after consulting with a representative committee of its community, FIT recommended to SUNY, of which it is a part, that Cosby’s degree be rescinded. This is the first time that FIT has recommended that an honorary degree be revoked.
SUNY joins other universities that have recently revoked Cosby’s honorary degrees including Johns Hopkins University, Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon University,

Bill Cosby found guilty of sexual assault in retrial

The US comedian is convicted on all three counts of drugging and molesting a woman 14 years ago.

SPECIAL DISCOUNT UPDATE:

50 Years After Bill Cosby Allegedly Drugged Her, One Accuser Says, ‘We All Spoke Truth to Power’

After Bill Cosby’s conviction Thursday for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004, many of his other accusers are feeling vindicated.

For Kristina Ruehli, who alleges Cosby drugged and tried to sexually assault her in 1965, the conviction represents a watershed moment for women’s rights.

“We’ve got the snowball rolling but this is not the end.  It’s still moving,” Ruehli tells PEOPLE. “But it’s going be an avalanche. I think it will really pave the way in the future for women. We all spoke truth to power.”

On Thursday, Montgomery County jurors deliberated for about 14 hours over two days before handing down the guilty verdict. Afterward, Cosby was freed on bond by the judge.

Cosby was convicted on three charges, each of which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years: aggravated indecent assault: penetration with lack of consent; penetration while unconscious; and penetration after administrating an intoxicant.

State law could allow a maximum possible penalty of 10 years per charge — or 30 years total, but the judge will decide whether Cosby will serve his terms concurrently or consecutively.

Cosby assaulted Constand, 45, in his Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, mansion in January 2004.

Cosby, who did not testify during his trial, denies similar allegations from more than 60 women.

Ruehli was Jane Doe Number 12 in Andrea Constand’s 2005 civil lawsuit against Cosby – which Constand settled in 2006. Ruehli claims she was drugged by Cosby in December 1965 while she was a secretary at his talent agency.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

In 2015, Reuhli filed a defamation lawsuit against  Cosby, claiming that public comments made about her by Cosby’s team after she and other women came forward were defamatory. After a judge denied Cosby’s motion to dismiss her case in 2016, Ruehli, feeling vindicated, withdrew her case.

“I put my money where my mouth was – I spent nearly $ 100,000 on lawyers – to prove that I was telling the truth … about this monster,” Ruehli previously told PEOPLE. “I have stood up for myself. Now it’s time to go back to my happy life, lose some weight and weed my garden.”

Ruehli says she has put the past behind her and is feeling peaceful.

“I’m feeling a renewed faith in the justice system,” she tells PEOPLE. “I feel this is sort of confirmation in the belief systems I was taught all my life.”

She adds, “Something in my being that always believed in right from wrong, and now I can continue to believe that given sunlight, that there is justice.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Gets a Public Reminder to Save the Garment Center From Designers and Supporters

MAYORAL APPEAL: Rather than just send a letter to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio asking — for a second time — that the Garment Center Steering Committee’s recommendations be considered before any changes to the zoning are made, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (N.Y.) and a group of supporters held a press event Saturday morning.
On the rooftop of Nanette Lepore’s showroom, Lepore, Bob Savage, Yeohlee Teng, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and about 25 others voiced their concern about the potential upheaval of the neighborhood’s ecosystem. Standing beside a chart that outlined the garment center’s boundaries, Maloney recalled the time in the Seventies when the district was created by former Mayor Ed Koch and how he spoke “forcefully” about the need “to preserve this dynamic, creative ecosystem. He had that vision and every other mayor has kept that vision. I’m all for development in Brooklyn, but there’s room for everybody.”
Earlier this year city officials proposed a $ 136 million “Made in New York” campus at Bush Terminal in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. About 40 Garment Center supporters helped to stall plans to set that plan in motion, by staging another press event days before an Aug. 21 City Planning Commission meeting.

Bill Cosby’s Face On Famous D.C. Mural Replaced With 15 Black Stars

Ben’s Chilli Bowl in D.C. is a restaurant known for its famous cooking and brick mural that features famous black stars including Bill Cosby ― that was, until Wednesday.

The restaurant unveiled a brand new mural during a special ceremony Wednesday morning that showed 15 other famous black stars where Cosby used to be. The original mural, which debuted in 2012, also featured local musician Chuck Brown, local radio personality Donnie Simpson and then-President Barack Obama but the painting of Cosby drew heavy criticism, and had even been defaced after dozens of women came forward with allegations of sexual assault against the comedian. (Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault in a case involving Temple University employee Andrea Constand which ended in a mistrial last week.)

The mural, by artist Aniekan Udofia, now includes First Lady Michelle Obama, Muhammad Ali, abolitionist Harriet Tubman and singers like Chuck Brown, Gladys Knight, and Prince as well as contemporary artists like actress Taraji Henson, comedian Dave Chappelle and rapper Wale.

Chapelle  attended the ceremony to celebrate the new artwork and to express how honored he felt to be included.

Those selected to be featured on the new mural were chosen through an online voting process that attracted more than 30,000 votes from across the world, according to Washington City Paper. It is expected to stay for at least the next five years.

Judge in Bill Cosby Case Declares a Mistrial

Bill Cosby Isn’t The Exception, He’s The Rule

After 52 hours of deliberations, the jury in the criminal case brought against Bill Cosby by Andrea Constand was unable to reach a unanimous consensus. On Saturday morning, Judge Steven O’Neill declared a mistrial.

Constand says that, in 2004, Cosby tricked her into taking three blue pills that incapacitated her and proceeded to sexually assault her. In December 2015, nearly 10 years after settling a civil suit with Constand in 2006 for an undisclosed sum, Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Although Cosby wasn’t acquitted, and Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said that he planned to retry the case, a mistrial is unquestionably a win for the 79-year-old actor and comedian. A retrial will take time ― and it means that Constand will have to testify about her trauma again.

Journalist Dana DiFilippo tweeted a video of Cosby supporters celebrating after the mistrial was announced:

Before the Cosby trial began, justice felt somewhat inevitable. Because in a situation like this one, it just feels like it should be.

A man is publicly accused of sexually assaulting nearly 60 women over the course of decades. The stories are explicit, horrifying and similar. Many of them involve drugging and brutal rape. Together, they paint a picture of a serial and methodical sexual predator who used his celebrity to exploit women.

As far as the court of public opinion is concerned, Bill Cosby’s guilt was all but decided in late 2014, when the floodgates opened and women’s stories began pouring out on what felt like a near-daily basis. And it felt like, for the first time, people were listening

Of course, this was before the country had collectively propped up a man who bragged about grabbing women’s pussies without consent to our highest office. It was before more than 15 women had publicly accused a candidate for President of the United States of sexual assault with little to no tangible impact on his support.

In the cases of both Cosby and Trump, we’re reminded that women are viewed as unreliable narrators of their own experiences, and that powerful men who are accused of perpetrating sexual violence ― even by more than a dozen women ― are assumed to be victims.

Barbara Bowman, one Cosby’s alleged victims who has been telling her story publicly since 2006, wrote about this phenomenon in an op-ed for The Washington Post in November 2014, after a Hannibal Burress joke about Cosby seemingly woke people up to the reality of his past:

Why wasn’t I believed? Why didn’t I get the same reaction of shock and revulsion when I originally reported it? Why was I, a victim of sexual assault, further wronged by victim blaming when I came forward? The women victimized by Bill Cosby have been talking about his crimes for more than a decade. Why didn’t our stories go viral?

Two and a half years later, their stories have gone viral. But the legal outcome remains uncertain.

The lack of a guilty verdict in this case speaks to the challenges that any alleged victim of sexual assault faces when seeking recourse through the criminal justice system.

There are the statutes of limitations that prevent victims who wait to speak out from seeking criminal charges. There’s the lack of sensitivity training in some police departments. There’s the backlog of rape kits. There’s the difficult-to-prosecute “he said, she said” nature of many sex crimes. There are the questions victims of sexual assault know that they’ll likely be asked: “Why didn’t you report it sooner?” “Why did you talk to him after?” “Were you drinking?” “What were you wearing?” “Were you maybe kind of asking for it?”

Not only are sexual assaults underreported, but according to RAINN, just 7 out of every 1,000 rapists will see a felony conviction. That statistic doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Cosby may have had significantly more money and fame and press coverage than most alleged perpetrators of sexual assault and rape. It would be easy to assume that his celebrity is what protected him, that Andrea Constand would have gotten justice if her rapist were anyone else besides “America’s Dad.” But statistically, she wouldn’t have. In many ways, his situation was the exception but at the end of the day, he’s the rule.

Celebrities React To Bill Cosby Mistrial With Total Indignation

Bill Cosby stands accused by 60 women of sexual misconduct in alleged incidents that span decades.

On Saturday morning, he might have been convicted for one: the case of Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee who accuses the embattled comedian of molesting her after giving her drugs at his home in 2004.

The charges against Cosby, three felony counts, carried a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. But after 12 jurors became deadlocked in their deliberations, a Pennsylvania judge declared the case a mistrial. Prosecutors reportedly intend to seek retrial of the case, but the result is a blow to Cosby’s many accusers and women like them who too often face uphill battles in their fight for justice after reporting sex crimes.

Soon after, Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow, Ru Paul and others spoke out on social media, seemingly united in their criticisms of the outcome.

Celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom also offered her encouragement for sexual assault survivors:

Bill Maher Says He Regrets Using ‘Offensive’ Racial Slur In Apology

UPDATE: 2:40 p.m. ET ― Following the nonstop criticism, Maher has apologized for using a racial slur on his Friday show. In a statement to HuffPost, he said:

Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.

PREVIOUSLY:

“Inexcusable” and “tasteless.”

Those are the words HBO used Saturday to describe Bill Maher’s use of the N-word on his talk show, “Real Time with Bill Maher.

The host used the offensive word during a segment with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Friday’s show after he told Maher, “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.”

Maher replied, “Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n****r!”

The comedian told the audience it was a joke, but criticism of his remarks has been relentless, with Maher trending at the top of Twitter throughout the day.

Now, HBO has released a statement to People, saying, “Bill Maher’s comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless.”

The statement adds that HBO will remove the “deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show.”

As HuffPost’s Doha Madani points out, this type of controversy isn’t new for Maher. The comedian has a history of making offensive comments, once even comparing Muslim singer Zayn Malik to the Boston Marathon bomber.

Following the “joke” on Friday, many are calling for Maher to be fired from “Real Time.”

Thus far, Maher hasn’t issued a statement on the controversy and his reps have not answered requests for comment.

Bill O’Reilly’s ‘Killing Patton’ Movie Gets Killed By Fox’s NatGeo

Bill O’Reilly’s film “Killing Patton” has officially been killed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, O’Reilly’s latest movie adaptation of his best-selling “Killing” book series has been scrapped by the National Geographic Channel ― but apparently not for the reasons you’re thinking.

Despite multiple sexual harassment claims against him, and Fox News, which is also owned by 21st Century Fox, severing ties with O’Reilly, NatGeo told THR the movie was just “a difficult project to crack creatively.”

The statement continued, “Like most projects in development, it didn’t go the distance, so we passed on it.”

The movie, which is about World War II General George S. Patton, was announced in 2015 and scheduled to premiere in 2019. Four of O’Reilly’s other “Killing” films ― “Killing Jesus,” “Killing Kennedy,” “Killing Reagan” and “Killing Lincoln” ― have reportedly done well for NatGeo since 2013. THR called them “ratings drivers.”

Still, the network reportedly did not mention the allegations against O’Reilly in its statement. So, yeah, “Killing Patton” was just tough to “crack creatively.” Sure. Totally.

Bill Gates Wants You To Read Trevor Noah’s Memoir This Summer

Deepen your mind while you deepen your tan.

Microsoft founder, philanthropist and avid bookworm Bill Gates has a few book recommendations for the summer. Each of the titles, which he listed in a blog post on Monday, are meant to help readers better understand the larger world around them.

“Some of these books helped me better understand what it’s like to grow up outside the mainstream,” Gates wrote. “As a child of mixed race in apartheid South Africa, as a young man trying to escape his impoverished life in rural Appalachia, or as the son of a peanut farmer in Plains, Georgia.”

He adds, “I hope you’ll find that others make you think deeper about what it means to truly connect with other people and to have purpose in your life. And all of them will transport you somewhere else — whether you’re sitting on a beach towel or on your own couch.”

One book Gates recommends is Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show,” which details the comedian’s life growing up in apartheid South Africa.

“I loved reading this memoir about how [the] host honed his outsider approach to comedy over a lifetime of never quite fitting in,” Gates wrote.

To find out Gates four other picks, just watch the video above. Happy reading!

Nick Graham Dressing Bill Nye for Netflix Series

Nick Graham has expanded his relationship with Bill Nye and is dressing the scientist and educator for his new Netflix series, “Bill Nye Saves the World.”
The 13-episode show started on Friday.
“Bill is one of those rare personalities that combines a strong compassionate message with his slightly irreverent, but always brilliant observations of the world,” Graham said. “Besides that, he has always had an enormous sense of style that he has made his own, and so all I had to do was take a bit further.”
Nye said: “Nick is incredibly creative and it’s reflected in his clothes. I love wearing his suits. And besides, they fit me right off the rack.”
On each episode of the Netflix show, Nye will take on a specific science-related topic or concept with panel discussions and correspondent reports. The set, which is designed as a modern science lab, is an extension of his popular series in the Nineties, “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”
Nye also walked in Nick Graham’s fall men’s show, titled “Life on Mars,” in January, which garnered over 1 billion impressions and 385,000 likes for Nye on Instagram, according to Graham.
The designer collaborated with Nye on a limited-edition collection of quirky, science-themed bow ties in November of 2015,

9 Times Bill O’Reilly’s Replacement, Tucker Carlson, Showed Off His Sexist Cred

As of Wednesday, Bill O’Reilly is officially out at Fox News, a turn of events that has some rejoicing. Even though O’Reilly has been ousted only after it came out that he and Fox had settled at least 5 sexual harassment suits over the past 15 years ― and those claims began to hurt ad dollars ― his termination still feels like a win in the ongoing battle against sexist men with huge media platforms.

And yet Fox has announced that O’Reilly’s slot will be filled by anchor and commentator Tucker Carlson. While Carlson certainly doesn’t have any highly publicized sexual harassment allegations looming over him (a marked improvement!), he has a well-recorded history of dismissing sexual harassment and women in general.

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, shall we?

1. He complained about Ashley Graham’s “political” Sports Illustrated cover.

“Does it really need to be political?” Carlson asked, after the Sports Illustrated made history with its 2016 swimsuit issue by featuring plus-size model Ashley Graham on its cover, prompting praise for celebrating women of all sizes.

“Keep it out of my swimsuit issue,” Carlson says via voice-over in the clip below.

2. He refused to apologize when a writer at his website, The Daily Caller, referred to the NYC Mayor’s spokesperson as a “self-righteous bitch” with a “labia face.”

In 2015, an email obtained by Buzzfeed revealed that Carlson’s brother Buckley Carlson, a writer for his news site The Daily Caller, referred to called New York Mayor De Blasio’s spokesperson Amy Spitalnick as a “self-righteous bitch.” The email, which had been sent to Tucker, also speculated as to whether Spitalnick had ever been given a “pearl necklace,” accused her of having “extreme dick-fright,” and referred to her as “LabiaFace.” Oh, and it was sent to Spitalnick herself by mistake.

When the email came to light, Carlson declined to apologize on his brother’s behalf and quipped that the email had been meant “in the nicest way.”

3. He claimed that Democrats “made up” the concept of sexual harassment.

Yup. In 2006, during a segment of his old MSNBC show in which Democratic strategist Steve McMahon said that the Dems taking control of Congress would mean an era of “a lot more fun,” Carlson responded

A lot more fun? This is a group that made up the concept of sexual harassment. ‘You look great today.’ Boom, I‘m charging you with a crime.  Do you know what I mean? It‘s not a group I associate with fun. You want a sex scandal, the Republican party, baby, that‘s where you go.

4. He also showed that he actually doesn’t understand the concept of sexual harassment at all.

According to MediaMatters, on an episode of “Hannity” in February 2010, Carlson defended an ESPN analyst who had been suspended for making sexist comments about a woman’s clothes on air.

Because the sexist comments were made publicly, Carlson explained that the analyst had done done nothing wrong because: “Sexual harassment by definition takes place in private.”

5. He blamed women for sexism in politics.

On a 2007 episode of his MSNBC show “Tucker,” Carlson questioned the idea that woman have it harder in politics, citing the fact that “most voters are women.”

He asked: “If women were so anxious to have women in Congress, and there were so many great female candidates running, then why wouldn’t Congress be 52 percent female?”

Welcome to internalized misogyny and structural sexism, Tucker.

6. He told political writer Lauren Duca to “stick to the thigh-high boots.”

After her Teen Vogue article on Donald Trump and gaslighting went viral in December 2016, Carlson invited writer Lauren Duca on his show. He then proceeded to try and devalue her opinions and political writing because she writes for Teen Vogue, and has written non-political pieces in the past.

“You should stick to the thigh-high boots,” he said. “You are better at that.”

7. He defended President Donald Trump’s “Grab ‘em by the pussy” comments.

When audio of President Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women leaked in October 2016, Carlson claimed that the outrage over the comment was exaggerated.

“Nobody is actually shocked by this and everyone is pretending to be,” he said.

8. He described Hillary Clinton as “castrating.”

Because the idea of a female president is apparently the most terrifying thing ever, Carlson dedicated a segment of his MSNBC show in 2007 to talk about how scary Hillary Clinton is.

“There’s just something about her that feels castrating, overbearing, and scary,” he said

9. He said the Day Without A Woman boycott was an “attack on white men.”

After “A Day Without A Woman” took place on International Women’s Day this year, Carlson declared in a segment that because the day was designed to avoid shopping anywhere but women and POC-owned businesses, it was an act of “hostility” and “obviously an attack on white men.”

The Time I Hired Bill O’Reilly’s Gardener

“No man is a hero to his valet,” goes the old proverb.  In the case of Bill O’Reilly, no man’s a hero to his gardener.

O’Reilly’s high profile job loss reminded me of an incident that occurred during the first year of his Fox tenure.  I was seeking a gardener to take care of my small property on the north shore of Long Island, and one candidate, “Jeff,” gave me a list of customers who could vouch for his expertise.

The names, each followed by a phone number, were something like this:

John Smith
Mary Jones
Bill O’Reilly
Bob White
Jane Doe

I did a double-take when I saw O’Reilly, as I knew he lived in Manhasset, not far from me. “Is this Bill O’Reilly from TV?” I asked. “Yeah,” Jeff replied. “He’s the guy at Fox.”

At the time, I was Geraldo Rivera’s senior producer for his nighttime news discussion program on CNBC, and the two hosts (and future Fox colleagues) were engaged in some kind of public feud so petty that I can’t recall the substance of it.  But, I thought, this could be interesting.

“Let me ask you something, Jeff. Is Bill as tough on his gardener as he is on his guests?” Jeff had a quizzical look on his face. “His guests?” he repeated.  “What do you mean?”

“Well,” I explained, “I was just wondering if he treats you with the same kind of pompous condescension and disrespect that I often see him show to the guests on his program.”

Jeff was even more confused.  “What do you mean, his program?  He has a show? He told me he worked at Fox, and I figured he was some kind of behind-the-scenes guy. I had no idea!”

This was too good to be true. I thanked Jeff and said I’d be in touch. It was a weekend afternoon, so the second he left, I picked up the phone and dialed O’Reilly’s home number. He answered himself and, after I identified myself as Rivera’s producer, immediately began defending some comment he’d recently made about my boss.

“No, no,” I interrupted, “this isn’t a business call, or about your dispute with Geraldo. I just met your gardener, Jeff, and he gave me your name as a reference.” O’Reilly was audibly relieved, and gave me a glowing review of Jeff’s handiwork.

I thanked him for the recommendation, and then, I couldn’t resist. “By the way, Bill,” I said, “you should know that Jeff doesn’t do a good job for you just because you’re on TV.  In fact, he had no clue you’re an on air personality.”

“How is that possible?,” O’Reilly sputtered. “When I hired him I told him I worked at Fox!” “True,” I laughed, “but Jeff’s never seen your show.  As far as he knew, you could be in charge of the Fox cafeteria.”

O’Reilly was stunned, and I was delighted at being able to take the bombastic Bill down a notch. I ended up hiring Jeff, who did such a fine job with my grass and shrubs that I often suspected he must have been using some of the overflow of fertilizer that one could surely find at the O’Reilly compound.

Ludacris Sure Had The Last Laugh Over Bill O’Reilly And Pepsi, Didn’t He?

Back in 2002, Bill O’Reilly asked his viewers to boycott Pepsi because the company was working with the hip-hop artist Ludacris.

“I’m calling for all responsible Americans to fight back and punish Pepsi for using a man who degrades women, who encourages substance abuse, and does all the things that hurt particularly the poor in our society,” the Fox News host said on “The O’Reilly Factor.”

It worked. Soon after O’Reilly’s call to arms, Pepsi pulled all of its ads featuring Ludacris and stopped working with him entirely ― for what reason is still difficult to discern.

Flash forward 15 years, and the situation not only seems particularly ridiculous, but just drips with irony.

The beverage company recently found itself embroiled in yet another ad-related controversy. This time, however, the ad was actually offensive, making light of political protests depicting Kendall Jenner walking through a protest to deliver a can of Pepsi to a police officer and receive cheers all around. On April 5, Pepsi pulled the ad and apologized.

Just days earlier, on April 1, The New York Times published an investigation that found it was, in fact, O’Reilly who had been degrading women, not Ludacris. All told, Fox News and O’Reilly had paid out $ 13 million to five women because of his allegedly inappropriate behavior toward them, The Times found.

The revelation would lead to calls for O’Reilly’s ouster at Fox News. Asked about the controversy a little over a week later, Ludacris only said that he hoped O’Reilly could learn from the controversy.

“It’s not my place to judge Bill O’Reilly the same way he judged me,” he said during an appearance on radio show “The Breakfast Club.” “I’m thriving in life right now. All I can do is hope that Bill O’Reilly settles these issues and learns from whatever mistakes he may have made ― and also thrives.”

“But,” he added, “it is definitely ironic that Pepsi and Bill O’Reilly are under fire right now.”

O’Reilly was never able to settle his issues. On Wednesday, Fox News announced that “The O’Reilly Factor” host would not return to the network as a result of his treatment of women, leaving him with all the time in the world to go catch the No. 1 movie in America right now: “The Fate of the Furious,” featuring who else but Ludacris.

Ludacris appeared to subtly address the news Wednesday, just 30 minutes after it came out that O’Reilly was gone.

Now, I ask you: If that’s not a cherry on top, what is?

Bill O’Reilly On Chopping Block Amid Claim He Called Black Woman ‘Hot Chocolate’

What once seemed unimaginable now seems at least possible.

New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman reported Tuesday that the Murdoch family is “leaning” toward pulling Bill O’Reilly off of Fox News’ airwaves in the middle of growing pressure from advertisers and activist groups.

The report comes amid a separate claim by attorney Lisa Bloom that O’Reilly used to call a black woman who worked as a clerical worker at Fox News “hot chocolate” during her time at the network in 2008. The television host would reportedly make her feel uncomfortable in other ways as well.

“He would never talk to her, not even hello, except to grunt at her like a wild boar,” Bloom told The Hollywood Reporter. “He would leer at her. He would always do this when no one else was around and she was scared.”

Bloom, who said she verified the woman’s story with three witnesses, claims the woman feared she would lose her job if she complained at the time. She added that the woman wants no money, but has registered a complaint with the Fox News hotline in light of recent news about the host ― a service that apparently many female employees at the network only recently came to learn about.

O’Reilly, who remains cable news’ most dominant figure, went on vacation last week as advertisers dropped him by the dozens following a New York Times investigation that revealed the Fox News Network and the host had paid at least $ 13 million to settle five claims of sexual harassment.

More claims have continued to surface about the host’s actions ― some of them from the most unlikely of sources.

At least 70 advertisers have decided to no longer advertise on “The O’Reilly Factor,” which remains Fox News’ biggest show by far. But “O’Reilly Factor” viewers remain committed to their host. A recent HuffPost/YouGov poll found that 65 percent of people who watch the show still hold a favorable view of him, and only 9 percent of his Republican viewers think the show should be canceled.

The show’s ratings also dropped 26 percent in the first three days he was gone, further proof of O’Reilly’s influence, both nationally and internally at Fox News.

Sherman reports that James Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch have been arguing to their father, Rupert, that the network must rid itself of O’Reilly, but Rupert remains unsure, not wanting to appear to be bowing to outside pressure from outlets like The New York Times.

But on Tuesday, even Matt Drudge of The Drudge Report couldn’t help but think that O’Reilly’s days might be numbered.

Bill Murray Is Even Charming While Trying To Bribe Umpires

Baseball season is in full swing again, and it’s hard to pick out our favorite part. Is it the spring weather, the peanuts, the Cracker Jacks — or the joy of seeing Bill Murray goof around on a minor-league field?

WCIV sports reporter Daren Stoltzfus caught this chummy moment between the comedian and two umpires at a recent Charleston RiverDogs game in South Carolina. Murray, a co-owner of the team, was set to throw out the Opening Day pitch, but not before trying to sway the officials with some cold, hard cash.

The comedian was quite the staple while rooting for the Chicago Cubs at the 2016 World Series, and we’re hopeful he’ll make a trip to a major-league game soon.

Stoltzfus also shared a photo of Murray taking the time to shake each player’s hand before the game.

The team fell to the Lexington Legends 6–3 that night, but who cares? They’ve got Murray on their side.

Ads Praising Obamacare Repeal Air Hours After GOP Bill Failed

Republicans were humiliated twice on Friday. Once, for failing to replace the Barack Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act. Then a second time, for bragging that they did on national television just hours after they failed.

Ads that aired that night during national basketball games showered a handful of congressional Republicans with praise for “keeping their promise” on replacing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. In reality, President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) pulled their “American Health Care Act” just minutes before a scheduled vote.

“No more big government penalties or job killing mandates!” a narrator in the videos says. “New tax credits to make insurance cheaper, and real protections for people with preexisting conditions.”

The videos feature stock footage and upbeat music. The ads do not mention that 24 million people would have lost health care under Trump’s plan.

The ads, produced by the conservative American Action Network PAC, encouraged viewers to thank their Republican representatives for doing such a stellar job. Ads ran for Reps. David Young (R-Iowa), Barbara Comstock (R-Va.), Will Hurd (R-Tex.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.).

The ads ran during a Wizards-Nets game and on CBS stations before March Madness coverage, according to Deadspin.

On their YouTube page, American Action Network still has ads up for Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and Rod Blum (R-Iowa).

Despite the video suggesting Blum would have taken credit if the bill passed, he told The Courier that he was in fact pleased that it did not.

Bill Nighy Previews The ‘Satisfying’ ‘Love Actually’ Mini-Sequel

Bill Nighy is as excited for the “Love Actually” mini-sequel as we are.

During a Build Series interview with The Huffington Post on Thursday, the actor, who stars in the new movie “Their Finest,” shared a little bit of information about the much talked-about “Love Actually” revival, which will debut on Red Nose Day in the U.S. May 25.

“I’m in it,” Nighy, who of course played pop star and “Christmas Is All Around” singer Billy Mack in the beloved film, confirmed. “And Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson and Keira Knightley and Colin Firth and Lúcia [Moniz] and Andrew Lincoln and Chiwetel Ejiofor, you can probably guess that I’ve been saying this quite often over the last few days,” the actor joked. “It was very, very cool.”

The cast reunited with a goal to end child poverty and ensure that kids are safe, healthy and educated by supporting Red Nose Day and Comic Relief, which was founded by “Love Actually” writer and director Richard Curtis.

“You’ll get to see what’s happened to everybody in the 14 years since the movie was made,” Nighy said, adding that it’s definitely “satisfying.”

“I’ve seen Liam Neeson’s one and don’t miss it, and don’t miss Hugh Grant’s [bit] because it’s hilarious,” the actor concluded.

Nighy brings another comedic character to life as actor Ambrose Hilliard in “Their Finest,” a rom-com war drama that centers around a British film crew as they attempt to boost morale during World War II by making a propaganda film after the Blitzkrieg. The lovely movie is out April 7 in select theaters.

Bono Praises Mike Pence’s Defense of AIDS Bill During Friendly Meeting in Germany

After an address at the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday in which he vowed that the Unite States will “hold Russia accountable,” Vice President Mike Pence had a brief visit with U2 frontman and activist Bono.

The two men discussed the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) — a government initiative to provide treatment, testing, education, and counseling to those suffering with HIV/AIDS in Africa (among other places).

It was first signed in 2003 under President George W. Bush and later renewed in 2008 under President Barack Obama. As an Indiana congressman at the time, Vice President Pence was an advocate for PEPFAR’s passing.

“Twice on the House floor you defended that,” Bono told Pence. “That’s how we know you.”

“It was an extraordinary historic accomplishment and you played a leading role in carrying it forward,” Pence responded.

The rockstar has been raising awareness about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic for nearly two decades now — co-forming Product Red, which partners with big brands (Nike, Gap, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Beats by Dre, etc.) to help raise money for charities fighting the disease.

He also co-founded the ONE Campaign which aims to eradicate poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa by raising awareness and encouraging Americans to contact senators/elected officials and voice their opinions.

While Pence did advocate for PEPFAR’s passing, some critics have claimed that he enabled an HIV outbreak in Indiana when he was serving as governor. The critics claim that Pence’s defunding of Planned Parenthood, which was one of the few places in some parts of Indiana that offered HIV testing, as well as his alleged dithering on pushing forward a needle exchange bill to fight passing infections, led to a rise in HIV patients in Scott County. He eventually approved a bill for needle exchanges which led to a reduction in the number of HIV cases.

“I appreciate the chance to get together for you for a minute,” Pence told Bono. “I heard you were in town.”

“You’re the second busiest man on earth,” Bono joked.

Afterwards, the Pence tweeted about the meeting. “Enjoyed chatting w/ Bono at @MunSecConf,” he wrote. “Discussed prior effort to twice pass Africa AIDS assistance & future security in developing nations.”

The Munich Security Conference marks Pence’s first trip overseas as vice president.

3 Things We Wish Bill Maher Would

First of all, a confession: I probably agree with 90% of Bill’s Maher’s political/ideological positions, so the piddling complaints that follow aren’t the result of any fundamental difference in philosophy or political doctrine.

As far as I’m concerned, Bill Maher’s view of the world is very much in synch with my own. In fact, if he and I were to sit down at a neighborhood bar (I with a cheap domestic beer, he with a top-of-the-line reefer) and discuss politics, we could very likely go a whole hour without a single meaningful dispute.

My beef is more “personal” than ideological, more about “style” than “substance.” Alas, it seems that somewhere along the line Mr. Bill Maher has fallen hopelessly in love with himself. This has altered his act, and not in a good way. As a consequence of that high self-regard, he now comes off as some sort of a “latter day prophet” or elder statesman rather than a stand-up comic.

With all due respect, here are 3 things I wish Bill would do:

1. Grab on to a little humility, dude. You’re funny, you’re quick, you’re entertaining, but you’re no comedic or political genius. Mort Sahl, Richard Pryor and George Carlin were geniuses. As talented as you are, you ain’t one of those guys. Also, didn’t Mort Sahl, George Carlin and Richard Pryor write their own material? At the end of your HBO show we see listed the names of 6-8 co-writers. Show a little modesty.

2. Don’t be such an obvious “applause whore.” It is so damned annoying to watch you stop talking–to stop delivering your jokes and come to a complete halt–so long as even one person in the audience is still applauding. It makes you look insecure and weirdly “needy.”

You should do what Jimmy Kimmel does during his monologue. Understandably not wanting to have his next joke drowned out by applause, Kimmel will wait a moment for the applause to die down after a particularly funny remark.

But one thing Kimmel doesn’t do is destroy the pace. He doesn’t stand there waiting for that one appreciative guy in Row 3 to stop clapping before continuing. He keeps it going, which is what you need to do, Bill. Stop milking it.

3. Also, in the same vein, don’t look at the audience with dismay or disapproval when they don’t laugh at a particular gag or when, God forbid, they actually boo or groan at something you say. Again, not only does that make you seem prickly and unnecessarily “desperate,” it disrupts the flow; it alters the mood.

You need to remind yourself that this is a comedy show, not a townhall meeting, political convention or self-improvement seminar. Instead of “challenging” or scolding the audience (and I’ve seen you do this too many times) when they appear to disagree or underappreciate one of your gags, you need to keep your shtick rolling.

Finally, you have to remind yourself that, as perceptive, well informed and sharp as you may be (and you are all of those things), you are not a philosopher. You are not an icon and you’re not a fountain of wisdom. In the final analysis you’re a comic, and a damned good one. Basically, you need to channel Shecky Greene rather than Walter Lippman. Is that too much to ask?

Bill Nye, Simon Doonan Walk in 1st Annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show

“[The organizers] said to me, ‘can you get into runway mode?’” said Simon Doonan, creative ambassador at large at Barneys, who sported a navy Theory blazer backstage at The Blue Jacket Fashion Show Wednesday night. “And I said, I’m always in runway mode. My problem is not being able to get out of runway mode.”
Held at Pier 59, the first annual fashion show aimed to bring awareness to prostate cancer, a disease that ranks as the second leading cause of death among men. Designers like Joseph Abboud, Nick Graham and Nicole Miller were tapped to create custom designed blue jackets to be worn by the likes of host Carson Kressley, Mario Cantone and Lee Tergesen, among others. A few of the designs are currently up for auction, with proceeds benefiting the National Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The One Thing Bill Maher Loves About Donald Trump

On “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, Maher led a panel discussion about the Republican presidential candidates’ greatest weaknesses, inspired by the question that opened the GOP debate Wednesday.

While Maher has expressed clearly negative feelings about Trump in the past, he did reveal one thing he appreciates about the candidate.

“Trump [was] the only guy who was honest,” Maher said to his panelists. “He said, ‘I don’t forgive.’ I love Trump for that. He’s like, I don’t forgive. You fuck with me, I’m Vito Corleone, I will follow you back to Italy. I will find you in your old age and I will stick a knife in your stomach.'”

Back in September, Maher called out Trump’s ignorant comments about undocumented workers by channeling him in a segment jokingly telling Americans to rally against Australians “taking” our jobs.

“Australia is not sending us its best people,” he said. “They’re bringing drugs — yes, enough for everybody, but still — they’re rapists — OK, not rapists, but they do a lot of fucking — and I assume some are good people.”

Sigh. It’s not too surprising that Maher had trouble finding something about Trump to like.

Eddie Murphy Nails Bill Cosby Joke In Rare Stand-Up Set

Eddie Murphy delivered a rare stand-up set with the very thing he didn’t want to do a few months ago: a Bill Cosby joke.

Murphy received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday night, where he took to the stage for his first stand-up performance in 28 years. Back in February, we learned via a tweet from former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Norm Macdonald that Murphy had declined to portray Cosby on the “SNL” 40th anniversary special, not wanting to “kick a man when he is down.”

But Murphy wasn’t holding back on Sunday. “Bill has one of these,” the Oscar-nominated comedian joked, referring to the Mark Twain bust that honorees receive. “Did you all make him give it back?” (Several universities have revoked Cosby’s honorary degrees in the wake of his numerous sexual abuse allegations.)

Murphy then morphed into Cosby’s sing-songy lilt, saying, “I would like to talk to some of the people who feel that I should give back some of my motherf**king trophies.” Continuing in his best “Pudding Pop” voice, a callback to his Cosby impression from his famous 1987 stand-up film ”Raw,” Murphy reportedly said, ”You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in the people’s stomach … If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person, I am going to try and kill this man!”

Days earlier, Murphy had explained his decision not to do Cosby at the “SNL” anniversary tribute: ”There’s nothing funny about it,” he told The Washington Post. “If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people.” But Arsenio Hall, who was at Sunday’s celebration, told the Post that Murphy discussed the potential Mark Twain bit with him and Chris Rock, eventually changing his tune. “[Murphy] said, ‘Because Cosby gonna get sick of this soon, he’s gonna get sick of people hating, and eventually he’s gonna have to say something,’” Hall said of Murphy’s decision. “And we were like, ‘That is funny, man. Are you willing?’”

You can see a snippet of the set around the 2:25 mark in this video from The Associated Press. A full broadcast of the event airs Nov. 23 on PBS.

Eddie Murphy Explains Why He Wouldn’t Portray Bill Cosby On ‘SNL’ Special

Eddie Murphy says he chose not to reprise his famous impression of Bill Cosby on the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special because he didn’t want to joke about the embattled comedian’s sexual assault scandal.

“It’s horrible,” Murphy told The Washington Post in a lengthy interview published Tuesday. “There’s nothing funny about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. You’re hurting him. You’re hurting his accusers. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing.'”

Cosby has been accused of sexually assaulting more than 50 women.

Murphy, a former “SNL” cast member, almost appeared in the sketch before changing his mind and deciding to simply give a brief speech instead. He told The Post he “totally understood” why “SNL” wanted to do the bit, which ended up starring current cast member Kenan Thompson as Cosby.

“It was the biggest thing in the news at the time,” Murphy said. “I can see why they thought it would be funny, and the sketch that Norm [Macdonald] wrote was hysterical.”

After the airing of the February special, Macdonald explained in a series of tweets that Murphy declined to play Cosby because “he will not kick a man when he is down.” In response, Cosby released a statement thanking Murphy for his decision.

“I am very appreciative of Eddie and I applaud his actions,” a Cosby spokesperson said.

Bill Maher Thinks GOP Should Listen To Pope Francis On Climate Change

Bill Maher praised Pope Francis’ views on climate change on “Real Time” Friday night.

While admitting to have “mixed feelings” about the pope, the host did appreciate his views on this particular topic, especially in contrast to those held by many Republican representatives in Congress.

“I think it’s just awesome that this pope took on this issue,” Maher said. “I love that Boehner invited him to talk to Congress, and there he was the Grandmaster Flash of crazy non-evidentiary nonsense, lecturing the Republicans on reality.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher discussed British Prime Minister David Cameron, Kim Davis and Josh Duggar.

Bill Maher Rips Today’s ‘Sharing Economy’ On ‘Real Time’

It’s probably safe to say you won’t see Bill Maher ride around in an Uber anytime soon. The comedian put the ride-finding app as well as others on blast on Friday, calling out America’s “sharing economy” on “Real Time.”

“Airbnb? You really think anybody really wants to have total strangers living in their apartment for a week? ‘Oh look, someone else’s pubes on my soap. I’m living the dream,'” Maher said.

One major problem with sharing apps is that some of them can put your personal information at risk, though Maher seemed more focused on the financial aspect. The comedian blames outrageous income inequality and greed for the rise in services he says are now replacing people with robots.

“The one thing we’re not sharing are the profits. Somehow they forgot to create an app for that,” he quipped.

“I am not throwing away my shot,” leading man Lin-Manuel Miranda sings again and again and again over the course of Hamilton, the new instant-megahit musical with music, lyrics and book by the same Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda doesn’t waste his shot, for sure, and scores an absolute bull’s-eye. Hamilton is not just an excellent and rousing musical; it brings something new to the musical theatre, and does it so very compellingly that superlatives are in order. I–and I expect just about all my critical colleagues–would tell you to stop reading right now and get yer tickets, except there aren’t likely many to be had for the next year or three.

Alexander Hamilton was heretofore best known as the fellow etched in green on the ten-dollar bill; one of two major Founding Fathers–the other being Benjamin Franklin–who didn’t get to become president; and the patriot who was killed by the then-sitting vice president of the United States, in a duel on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. (To quote Miranda’s Hamilton: “Everything is legal in New Jersey.”)

The playwright fills in the blanks, showing us an orphan bastard immigrant from the West Indies who underwent Dickensian hardship; emigrated to the colonies just in time for the Revolutionary War; and became General Washington’s “right hand man.” He went on to help formulate the U. S. Constitution and–as President Washington’s Secretary of the Treasury–devise the financial structure of the new nation. Miranda–perhaps to avoid tarring his hero, by association–does not bother to tell us that Hamilton also founded the New York Post.

The magic of Hamilton comes from the manner of Miranda’s storytelling. While the action remains in the proper era (which is roughly 1776-1804), the street-talking characters are not so much founding fathers but founding brothers with up-to-the-minute attitude. (Hamilton from Nevis and the Marquis de Lafayette from France, leading the Continental Army at the decisive Battle of Yorktown, stop to jointly exclaim: “Immigrants! We get the job done!!”)

As one might expect from the author of In the Heights, the new show incorporates a considerable amount of street rhythm and rap. While this was the musical base of In the Heights, Miranda herein displays that he is a top-level musical theatre writer. He utilizes rap for a purpose; it turns out that rapid-paced streams of verbiage are the perfect way to cram tons of necessary exposition into the show, rather than making us sit through speech after speech and book scene after book scene. This is faster, funnier, and far more effective. The music ranges from tuneful to exquisite (as in, particularly, “Helpless” and “Satisfied” for the two leading ladies, and the lullaby “Dear Theodosia”), so no harm done. What’s more, Miranda demonstrates with numbers like King George’s “You’ll Be Back” and the explosively sinuous “Room Where It Happens” that he is an accomplished musical comedy writer, and no mistake.

Hamilton catapults Miranda to the head of the class. While breaking new ground in the melding of theatre and contemporary music, Miranda has also managed to focus the national political spotlight on Broadway, and that’s quite an accomplishment. He is abetted by excellent work from close collaborators Thomas Kail (director), Andy Blankenbuehler (choreography), Alex Lacamoire (orchestrations and musical direction) and designers David Korins, Paul Tazewell and Howell Binkley, all of whom make keen contributions to what is an instant classic.

2015-08-06-1438891144-4515585-HamiltonBway0341rDaveedDiggsasThomasJeffersonandtheensembleofHAMILTON.jpg

Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. Photo: Joan Marcus

The supporting players are exceptional without exception. Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs and Okieriete Onaodowan–as Hamilton’s Revolutionary buddies in the first act, and as his beloved son and two enemies (and future presidents) in the second–offer perfect performances, as does Christopher Jackson as Washington. (Diggs, though, stands out among them, with a marvelous Jefferson.) Hamilton, and Miranda, could hardly find better women in his life than Phillipa Soo (Natasha of The Great Comet) and Renée Elise Goldsberry (of Broadway’s Good People and TV’s “Good Wife”); both offer a stunning display of dramatic singing.

Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening and “Glee”) is wonderfully droll as King George, who occasionally wanders on to offer malevolent discourse to his colonists (“when push comes to shove, I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love”). Groff, who played more than half of the Hamilton run at the Public Theater, is the only major replacement; patrons who saw the show during the first five weeks downtown had the added treat of seeing Brian d’Arcy James in the role until he left for the new musical at the St. James.

Sharing the spotlight with Miranda is Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr. Odom, who made a powerful Broadway debut in Leap of Faith and appeared on TV’s “Smash,” is Iago to Miranda’s Othello; the author has seen fit, even, to give his villain material as strong as what he has written for himself. Hamilton–the character–is the center of attention, but Odom’s Burr is the musical’s sparkplug. “Talk less, smile more,” he counsels the young Hamilton early on, “don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for.” Which is in some ways the model for the modern reactionary politician.

The luckiest person involved, it seems, is Ron Chernow, author of the 2004 biography “Alexander Hamilton.” The book was a best-seller, which was its own reward, but Miranda happened to pick up a copy and latch on to it. Chernow suddenly has a Broadway hit and a major bonanza that he couldn’t have reasonably expected. For that matter, Miranda’s new musical is likely to make Alexander Hamilton more famous–to the public at large–than Presidents Adams and Jefferson combined.

There’s talk in Washington of displacing A. Ham. from the $ 10 greenback; even so, the man seems to have a considerably wider smile this morning. As for Miranda, I don’t recall anyone writing music, lyrics & book and starring in a hit musical since George M. Cohan last gave his regards to Herald Square. Miranda’s demonstration of talent, skill and savvy earn him a well-deserved gold star, and a goldmine too.

Judge Orders Bill Cosby To Give Sworn Deposition In Lawsuit

LOS ANGELES, Aug 5 (Reuters) – U.S. comedian Bill Cosby has been ordered to give a sworn deposition in a lawsuit alleging he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in 1974.

The order, entered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Tuesday and made public on Wednesday, states that Cosby will submit to questions under oath from the lawyer of his accuser, Judy Huth, on Oct. 9, and that she will answer questions from his attorneys on Oct. 15.

Cosby’s lawyers had sought to compel Huth to give her deposition before the comedian, but the judge sided with Huth in requiring Cosby to go first. (Reporting by Steve Gorman; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Bill Nye Reading Mean Tweets Is His Greatest Experiment Yet

Bill Nye taught us a lot about chemical reactions over the years, but none of that comes close to the Science Guy’s reactions to mean tweets

Nye recently read some unflattering tweets in support of a Kickstarter campaign for a documentary about him, which, to be honest, we kind of hope just turns out to be two more hours of tweets.

Mean tweets are a staple on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” but what happens when Nye’s science and reason meet the incoherent ramblings of the Internet? You get gold, people. Pure gold.

Bill Cosby Admitted To Drugging Women In 2005 Deposition

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he got quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with, and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman and “other people,” according to documents obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

That woman and a second woman testified in the same case that they knowingly took quaaludes from him, according to the unsealed documents.

The AP had gone to court to compel the release of the documents from the deposition in a sexual abuse lawsuit filed by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand — the first of a cascade of sexual abuse lawsuits against him. Cosby’s lawyers had objected on the grounds that it would embarrass their client.

Cosby settled that lawsuit under confidential terms in 2006. His lawyers in the Philadelphia case did not immediately return phone calls Monday. Constand consented to be identified but did not want to comment, her lawyer said Monday.

Cosby, 77, has been accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct, including allegations by many that he drugged and raped them in incidents dating back more than four decades. Cosby has never been criminally charged, and most of the accusations are barred by statutes of limitations.

Cosby, giving sworn testimony in the lawsuit accusing him of sexual assaulting Constand at his home in Pennsylvania in 2005, said he got seven quaalude prescriptions in the 1970s. The lawyer for Constand asked if he had kept the sedatives through the 1990s — after they were banned — but was frustrated by objections from Cosby’s lawyer.

“When you got the quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” lawyer Dolores M. Troiani asked.

“Yes,” Cosby answered on Sept. 29, 2005.

“Did you ever give any of these young women the quaaludes without their knowledge?”

Cosby’s lawyer again objected, leading Troiani to petition the federal judge to force Cosby to cooperate.

Cosby later said he gave Constand three half-pills of Benadryl, although Troiani in the documents voices doubt that was the drug involved. The two other women who testified on Constand’s behalf said they had knowingly been given quaaludes.

Three of the women accusing Cosby of sexually assaulting them have a defamation lawsuit pending against him in Massachusetts. They allege that he defamed them when his agents said their accusations were untrue. Cosby is trying to get their case thrown out before discovery.

Cosby had fought the AP’s efforts to unseal the testimony, with his lawyer arguing the deposition could reveal details of Cosby’s marriage, sex life and prescription drug use.

“It would be terribly embarrassing for this material to come out,” lawyer George M. Gowen III argued in June. He said the public should not have access to what Cosby was forced to say as he answered questions under oath from the accuser’s lawyer nearly a decade ago.

“Frankly … it would embarrass him, (and) it would also prejudice him in eyes of the jury pool in Massachusetts,” Gowen said.

U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno asked last month why Cosby was fighting the release of his sworn testimony, given that the accusations in the Temple woman’s lawsuit were already in the public eye.

“Why would he be embarrassed by his own version of the facts?” Robreno said.

Cosby resigned in December from the board of trustees at Temple, where he was the popular face of the Philadelphia school in advertisements, fundraising campaigns and commencement speeches.

Bill Hudson Fires Back At Kids Oliver And Kate Hudson, Says They’re ‘Dead’ To Him

Bill Hudson, the estranged father of actors Oliver and Kate Hudson, is firing back after his son’s scathing Instagram post with a seething message of his own.

“I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own,” Hudson said in an interview with The Daily Mail.

“I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name,” he continued. “They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.”

The comments come in response to an Instagram post by Oliver Hudson that went viral. The photo, reportedly taken more than 30 years ago, featured the actor and his sister as kids with Bill, and was posted with the caption, “Happy abandonment day… @katehudson.”

Hudson also slammed his ex-wife Goldie Hawn, who he says “poisoned” the kids against him, and expressed dismay at his daughter Kate’s Father’s Day post, which was a picture of her with Kurt Russell, Hawn’s longtime partner. The caption on the post read, “Pa, just simply….. Thank you Happy Fathers Day I love you to the moon and back.”

“It was an intimate shot and, as her father, I found it inappropriate and unsettling,” Hudson said. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Bill Maher Calls College Student A ‘Little Sh*t’ For Criticizing Jerry Seinfeld

Political talk show host Bill Maher called a college writer a “little shit” on his HBO show Friday night for questioning comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s claim that college audiences are too politically correct.

After San Diego State University student Anthony Berteaux, a campus editor-at-large with The Huffington Post, penned an open letter to Jerry Seinfeld telling him he was disheartened that the comedian thinks college audiences are too quick to call jokes racist, sexist or prejudiced, Maher told him to back off during a segment on “Real Time.”

“Now, I sure wouldn’t want to be judged by what I wrote at 20, but stupid though I was in 1976, I wouldn’t have presumed to lecture George Carlin on comedy,” Maher said, referring to the late, famed comedian. “Though I sure wish George was around today to write a letter back to this kid, as only he could. But since he can’t, allow me: Dear you little shit, I’m sure you’re busy with your new letter explaining astrophysics to Stephen Hawking and giving jump shot pointers to Steph Curry, but try to get a clue.”

In an interview with ESPN earlier this month, Seinfeld echoed sentiments expressed by comedians Chris Rock and Larry the Cable Guy about young people taking offense too easily.

“I don’t play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC,’” Seinfeld said. “[Young people] just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice.’ … They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.”

In Berteaux’s open letter, he challenged Seinfeld’s argument and cited Amy Schumer as a comedian whose jokes about sensitive subjects like rape successfully highlight injustices.

“It isn’t so much that college students are too politically correct (whatever your definition of that concept is), it’s that comedy in our progressive society today can no longer afford to be crass, or provocative for the sake of being offensive,” he wrote. “Sexist humor and racist humor can no longer exist in comedy because these concepts are based on archaic ideals that have perpetrated injustice against minorities in the past.”

Bill Nye Announces the 2015 Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup and Explains the Axis of Fun

Nothing validates a claim quite like hard facts from a scientist, which is why Fun Fun Fun Fest, Austin’s popular cross-genre Indie music festival, hand-picked Bill Nye to announce the 2015 lineup and provide evidence that this fest is, in fact, the most fun in all the land.

Fun Fun Fun X from funfunfunfestival on Vimeo.

Although The Science Guy clearly has the chops to crunch the numbers and appears to be all up in pop culture these days, how exactly did he end up as an ambassador for this fest?

“About 2 years ago, I wanted to find a better way of showing folks that FFF was different than other festivals, because I really believe that it is. It’s not a very credible thought coming from me though,” explains co-founder James Moody. “So we decided to work with a scientist to basically prove, through science, that FFF was special… and scientifically different from everything else out there. Thankfully Bill Nye agreed, likes tacos, and loves Wu-Tang, so here we are. Because science.”

To slam-dunk the case, Nye employs all the tools in his arsenal such as a Wu-Tang Periodic table, a mind-blowing fun equation and “Quantitative Bummer Observation” metrics to explain his conclusion. With the comedy lineup yet to be announced, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see him show up on the Yellow stage come November but I don’t have the science to prove it yet.

Check out the video for this year’s lineup and the full demonstration.

On ‘Inside Amy Schumer,’ Bill Nye Confirms The Universe Exists To Guide White Women In Their 20s

On Tuesday night’s “Inside Amy Schumer,” Bill Nye confirmed what we pretty much already knew — the universe only exists to send “cosmic guidance” to white women in their 20s.

Obviously.

Nye explained that while scientists once believed the universe was a “chaotic collection of matter,” recent breakthroughs have led them to understand it’s just basically a “giant dream board on which women pin their wishes.”

Because “if you just put it out into the universe, it will just manifest itself.” You know?

Model Janice Dickinson Sues Bill Cosby For Defamation Over Rape Claims

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Model Janice Dickinson has sued Bill Cosby for defamation over statements by his representatives that called her claims the comedian raped her in 1982 lies.

Dickinson’s lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court seeks unspecified damages on defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims. The suit states Dickinson requested a retraction from Cosby about statements calling her allegations, made last year to “Entertainment Tonight,” a lie. An email sent to Cosby’s attorney Martin Singer was not immediately returned. Singer called Dickinson’s claims that Cosby raped her in a Lake Tahoe, California, hotel room in 1982 “false and outlandish” in a letter to The Associated Press last year.

Dickinson’s suit states the denials by Cosby’s camp have caused her embarrassment, humiliation and led to her being re-victimized.

Killer Mike Calls Bill O’Reilly ‘Full Of S***’ On ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’

Killer Mike appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night and was very candid about his opinion of Bill O’Reilly.

“I like Bill O’Reilly as a character,” the Run the Jewels rapper said, prompting the host to laugh. “I hate how white people take him so seriously,” Mike continued. “He’s more full of shit than an outhouse.”

The rapper stuck by his belief that O’Reilly puts up a “fictitious” facade. But Maher disagreed slightly, saying that the political commentator’s temperament was no act. O’Reilly “may be full of shit,” Maher said, “but it’s sincere shit.”

The two then discussed O’Reilly’s claim that rap music is responsible for the decline of religion in America. Mike’s response was pure laughter.

In Friday’s episode Maher also brought up America’s obsession with British accents and discussed the criticism of first lady Michelle Obama’s speech at Tuskegee University with panelists Killer Mike, John Waters, Heather McGhee and Charles Murray.

Bill Maher Calls Out Rand Paul For Pandering To Republican Base

Bill Maher wants to know what happened to Rand Paul.

On “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, the host took Sen. Paul (R-Ky.) to task, claiming the presidential candidate has recently changed many of his libertarian beliefs.

“New rule: You can’t have any more Republican candidates for president until you tell me what you did with Rand Paul,” Maher said, “who was last seen standing in front of an aircraft carrier setting fire to everything he used to believe.”

By way of example, he said, “If you want to say, ‘I’m a new kind of Republican,’ don’t do what all the rest of them do and stand in front of the Yorktown … and then suggest adding $ 190 billion to the defense budget — the one you used to want to cut.”

Bill Kreutzmann, Grateful Dead Drummer, Joins Street Musician In San Francisco (And No One Noticed)

Tickets to the sold-out Grateful Dead concerts in Chicago this summer are fetching thousands of dollars online, but one member of the band played briefly for free in public on Sunday in front of a crowd of almost no one.

A video posted on Facebook shows Bill Kreutzmann, drummer and a member of the Dead since the band began in Palo Alto, California, in 1965, joining a street musician outside the Ferry Terminal Building in San Francisco.

The musician appears to be John F. King II, who’s known for drumming on garbage cans and other found objects. Kreutzmann posted the clip showing himself performing “undercover” in front of a decidedly smaller crowd than the ones he’ll face in Chicago.

In fact, it seems as if no one noticed at all:

Remember parking lot drum circles? I do. (And I’ll still join in, undercover… even after Sunday brunches in San Francisco.)

Posted by Bill Kreutzmann on Sunday, April 5, 2015

The video can also be seen here.

Kreutzmann has been busy of late. His tell-all book, “Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead” will be released in May. And of course, in July he’ll take the stage in the Windy City with his old bandmates for what’s being billed as the Grateful Dead’s final concerts.

Bill Maher Slams Liberals For Slamming Liberals

“Don’t throw the synthetic baby out with the bathwater,” said Bill Maher on Friday.

During his “New Rules” segment on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the talk show host took some time to call out liberals for attacking other liberals. Maher ran through a number of topics, including Elton John’s boycott of Dolce and Gabbana over comments on gay adoption and in vitro fertilization, backlash The Economist got over a cover and a college president who was forced to apologize for sending out an email that said “all lives matter” instead of “Black lives matter.”

“What is the point of attacking people who are 95 percent on your side?” said Maher, later adding, “I see atheists and agnostics bitching at each other. Why is this even a thing? Do you believe in a talking snake? Me neither. We’re on the same team.”

Bill Maher Calls For Ban On Fraternities In ‘New Rules’

Bill Maher is calling for the end of fraternities.

The host closed out his “New Rules” segment on “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night with a plea to the president.

“New rule,” Maher said. “Before he leaves office, President Obama must send in the National Guard to desegregate American’s last bastion of societal-approved racism: college fraternities.”

Maher went on to compare fraternities to the Islamic State group because of the hazing techniques used by some in the Greek system.

“Since 1970, there’s been at least one hazing-related death every year as pledges routinely endure alcohol poisoning, sleep deprivation, waterboarding, being dressed in diapers, buried in trash, force-fed cat food,” he said. “Jesus, why not just pledge ISIS?”

Eddie Murphy Apparently Declined Offer To Play Bill Cosby On ‘SNL 40’

Eddie Murphy’s first appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in 30 years was awkward and stilted, but according to Norm Macdonald, it could have been a whole lot different. Over the course of several tweets posted on Wednesday, Macdonald explained that there was, at one point, the idea to include Murphy in the “SNL 40” version of “Celebrity Jeopardy” as Bill Cosby.

As Macdonald wrote, he was disappointed “Celebrity Jeopardy” had become about celebrity impressions for the “SNL 40” special. But writer Steve Higgins thought having Murphy mimic Cosby would help tie it all together. Wrote Macdonald:

Macdonald relayed a bunch of other anecdotes about the week, including that Bill Murray almost didn’t make the show because of a golf tournament, before finishing out the Murphy story:

Without Murphy’s involvement, the sketch wound up happening with Kenan Thompson in the role of Cosby.

Murphy and Cosby memorably crossed paths before. During the 1987 concert film “Raw,” Murphy recalled how Cosby chastised him about using foul language in his stand-up routine.

Bill Murray Played The Mayor On ‘Parks & Rec,’ Making Amy Poehler’s Dreams Come True

In the stretch toward its final episode, “Parks and Recreation” is pulling out all the stops. On Tuesday night, that meant a little old guest appearance by Bill Murray. Yes, BILL MURRAY was on “Parks and Recreation.”

The actor appeared as Walter Gunderson, the deceased mayor of Pawnee — a character widely referenced throughout the show’s history but never before depicted. The mayor spoke to his residents from the grave in a little video message, and had an open casket at his funeral.

Getting Murray to play the mayor of Pawnee has been a dream of Amy Poehler and the “Parks and Rec” cast and crew for years. Back in 2011, Poehler mentioned her wish to cast him in an interview at PayleyFest and during an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” She brought it up it again in an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Sundance in 2013.

“I want Bill Murray to play the mayor,” she said “And I just dream about it every night. I whisper it to a bird and then I open the window and the bird flies away.”

Show creator Mike Schur told Entertainment Weekly that when they did finally manage to snag the actor, he was the perfect addition on set.

“He was just the most delightful person,” he said. “Not only was he incredibly complimentary of the show, he went around to every one of the actors and told them how great they were and cited specific episodes and moments. He hung out on the set for three hours, watching us shoot the show.”

The man, the myth, the legend.

Bill Maher Makes Yet Another Joke About Bill Cosby

Bill Maher made yet another joke referencing the recent sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby.

On Friday night’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host mentioned Cosby during a segment about Sarah Palin. While discussing the Republican voices who criticized a recent Palin speech, Maher said, “Sean Hannity asked, ‘Did the teleprompter go down?’ The Washington Examiner questioned whether she should be included in future Republican events. And Bill Cosby said, ‘I wouldn’t drug her with your drink.'”

The host has made jokes about the allegations against Cosby on numerous occasions, including during his monologue for the Nov. 14 episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher.” While discussing Obama’s then-new initiatives, he said: “If you’re a Republican, you see Obama as Bill Cosby sexually assaulting the Constitution.”

Maher also joked about the comedian on the Nov. 21 episode of the show. “It was a bad week for Bill Cosby,” Maher said. “On the plus side, he has lots of pills lying around that can make him forget the whole thing.”

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

Bill Nye Says ‘Give A F**k’ About Climate Change Instead Of Deflategate

Bill Nye is weighing in on Deflategate again, but this time he has a few props and a message to share about something far more important.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick claimed atmospheric conditions and temperature changes could have caused footballs to lose air pressure during the team’s AFC Championship win over the Indianapolis Colts.

On Sunday, Nye said taking that much air out of a ball would require an inflation needle. But in a new video posted on Funny or Die, The Science Guy declared that “one test is worth 1,000 expert opinions,” and put some footballs into a fridge set to 51 degrees, or the temperature at the Jan. 18 game.

That’s where the video takes a very different turn.

“While we’re all obsessed with Deflategate, let’s keep in mind that there’s something about which you should give a fuck,” Nye said. “Yes, like Tom Brady, the world is getting hotter and hotter, and you know why? Because we humans are pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”

Nye then began listing things that contribute to climate change — including long-winded Deflategate press conferences — and followed that up with a rallying cry.

“You should vote for congressmen and senators that appreciate the threat of climate change and the rate at which the world is getting warmer, so that we can preserve the earth for humankind for generations to come,” Nye said.

Oh, and about those balls…

Nye took one out of the fridge, gave it a squeeze, pronounced it “pretty much the same,” and said “the Patriots probably bent the rules a little bit.”

Nye, who lived in Seattle for a number of years, ended the video with a message that’s bound to rankle the New England faithful: “Go Seahawks!”

Bill Nye Says Belichick’s ‘Deflategate’ Explanation Doesn’t Make Any Sense

Count Bill Nye among those who aren’t buying the scientific explanations Bill Belichick is cooking.

“The Science Guy” told “Good Morning America” on Sunday that the New England Patriots coach’s recent explanation for why the team’s footballs were under-inflated during the AFC Championship Game “didnt make any sense.”

“I’m not too worried about coach Belichick competing with me,” Nye said, referring to the Internet dubbing Belichick “the science guy” after the coach’s complicated Saturday press conference. “What he said didn’t make any sense.”

Belichick said during the press conference that after carefully studying the issue, he had concluded that his team acted in accordance with NFL guidelines.

Belichick blamed the deflation of the team’s footballs on factors including “atmospheric conditions” and the team’s process of rubbing footballs before the game to wear them in, per the preference of the team’s quarterbacks.

But Nye, for one, wasn’t buying the idea that a little rubbing can deflate the football in any significant way.

“Rubbing the football — I don’t think you can change the pressure,” Nye said. “To really change the pressure, you need one of these, the inflation needle.”

Bill Nye told “Good Morning America” on Sunday that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s “deflategate” explanation “didn’t make any sense.”

But there’s one thing you should know about Nye: It appears he’s a Seahawks fan. “I cannot help but say, ‘Go Seahawks!”’ he admitted to “GMA.”

ESPN reported last week that the NFL had found 11 of the Patriot’s 12 footballs were significantly under-inflated during the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts. None of the footballs provided by the Colts were under-inflated.
