Roseanne Barr Thought She Was Going Blind for a Whole Year — But It Was a Misdiagnosis

After a whole year of thinking she was going blind due to macular degeneration and glaucoma, Roseanne Barr received some good news: She was no longer losing her eyesight, and it was a misdiagnosis all along.

“I went to a new doctor about a year ago,” Barr tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue, on stands Friday. “She told me I don’t have macular degeneration, but rather a mole on the inside of my eye that’s growing, and that’s why my vision is narrowing. Probably in the next year or so I can get it removed. I have a bad eye, but I’m not losing my eyesight.”

“My dad has macular degeneration so I thought it was genetic,” she adds. “I just accepted it. It was a way better diagnosis than some of my friends were getting. It’s not deadly. I didn’t take it too badly.”

In 2015, the 65-year-old actress was given the news of her deteriorating eyesight and immediately took to her own treatment plan.

“I have macular degeneration and glaucoma, so is good for me for that because I have pressure in my eyes. It’s a good medicine for a lot of things,” Barr previously told the Daily Beast.

For more on the Roseanne revival, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on stands Friday

While Barr admits that she was scared at first, she eventually learned to accept the health scare.

“I’m positive that nothing will go right in life,” she says. “That lets me off the hook. You never know. It’s never what you think and it’s never what you dread – it’s always something else that you didn’t expect. So you might as well live every day and have as much fun as you can. Do at least one good deed a day anonymously. Have as much fun as you can have.”

Now, Barr, who spends a lot of her free time babysitting her grandkids and working on her macadamia nut farm in Hawaii, just finished wrapping the revival of Roseanne as a limited ABC series.

“The first day in the writers room, I thought I was in heaven,” she says. “Every idea I had all this time, I had pitched to them and they picked them right up. It was kind of like a machine – it worked so well. The first day on the set, I hadn’t seen John (Goodman) or Laurie (Metcalfe) for a long time, and there we were. It was really exciting to watch them rebuild the set — it’s just perfect. It still felt new, but very familiar.”

The Roseanne revival premieres Tuesday on at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Best Friends Forever: 4-Year-Old Blind Girl Reunites with Beloved Missing Cat

A pure white cat, Angel was literally a bright spot in her family’s life.

So when Angel escaped from her Pensacola, Florida, home and went missing in September, it was a dark time for Heather Howell and her 4-year-old daughter Charley, who is blind and battling brain cancer.

According to WEAR, Howell searched for the cat and went to Facebook for help, desperate to reunite Charley with her furry best friend.

“We went to the shelter a couple of different times and looked and called them several different times. I looked on Pet Harbor, I probably looked on that thing once a night,” said Howell.

It ended up being by chance that Howell found Angel again: She spotted the stunning cat on Facebook being adopted by another family. Angel was reportedly surrendered to a local shelter by individuals claiming to be the cat’s owner, and the shelter then put the sweet cat up for adoption.

Eventually, Howell was able to get in touch with the family who adopted Angel and explained the situation to them.

Even though Vanessa Hilliard adopted the cat for her own daughter, she immediately understood that Angel belong with her original family.

“I believe if anyone was in our position or predicament would’ve done the same thing,” Hilliard said.

The Hilliards hand-delivered Angel back to Charley so they could watch the adorable reunion play out in real-time.

If they had any doubts about where Angel belonged, the cat’s reaction made it clear that they made the right choice.

“That was the calmest she was since she’s been with us when she heard her voice,” Hilliard said about the cat’s behavior upon seeing Charley again.

The Relationship Blind Spot That Could Tank Your Marriage

Beware the relationship blind spots: seemingly harmless issues that can derail a marriage if you’re not careful. Pastor John Gray of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, has spent time counseling many married couples, and, as a married man himself, he points to one common example of a blind spot that can ruin everything: thinking that you can maintain prenuptial friendships without any changes after marriage ― especially friendships with members of the opposite sex.

As Pastor John explains, this is a relationship blind spot he knows personally. “I have somebody that’s like a sister to me. We talked all the time, we never dated… We’ve known each other 28 years,” he says. “But, unless she was friends with my wife, we couldn’t be friends anymore.”

Yes, Pastor John knows how that may sound.

“Some people are like, ‘That’s crazy. Your wife needs to get over it,’” he says. “No. Because one of the blind spots is that pre-existing relationships somehow trump your marriage. They don’t.”

If your spouse takes precedent over your parents, Pastor John reasons, why wouldn’t the same be true for a friend? “When you get married, you forsake everything else to build that,” he says.

The key, he continues, is not to make any assumptions about how your partner may feel.

“Some spouses are okay with platonic friendships of the opposite sex, and others are not,” Pastor John says. “Deal with that blind spot, because that can became a very real point of contention later on.”

The pastor is starring in a new series on OWN, called “The Book of John Gray.” It premieres April 15, but you can watch the first episode in full right now on WatchOWN.tv.

Missing 17-Year-Old Blind Cat Found in Different State, Three Years Later

It was a long time coming, but Larry is finally home.

The blind 17-year-old feline, who originally hails from Washington state, was reunited with his owner after disappearing three-and-a-half years ago.

According to Multnomah County Animal Services in Troutdale, Oregon, which shared the story on its website, a good Samaritan brought the elderly orange tabby to the MCAS after he found it wandering around his apartment complex.

“Luckily, the cat had been microchipped as a kitten and the contact information traced back to Nancy, who happen to still be reachable by the phone number on file,” the post said. “Nancy said she had gone to work one day and the 14-year old cat she had brought home as a kitten had disappeared without a trace.”

The cat’s owner lost hope of finding her pet, named Larry, but thanks to that microchip, they were reunited after Nancy received the call from MCAS last week.

“Without a microchip, this now-blind senior cat living across state lines would never find his way back into his owner’s arms,” said the post. “As it turns out for Larry, he will be able to spend his remaining years with the home he knew most of his life.”

NEXT STOP, CUBA: For the sixth edition of the upcoming Art Wynwood, eco-friendly fashion designer Luis Valenzuela has created pieces inspired by Cuban artist Cundo Bermúdez. There will also be a special Cuban art exhibit at the fair.
At the opening night preview, models will be on hand wearing the dresses and turbans Valenzuela has designed. If any of the VIP guests (or any other art fans) decide they need to add his dresses to their closets, they will have the option to buy these unique pieces in his booth at Art Wynwood. The show runs Feb. 16-20. The street artist and Obey clothing founder Shepard Fairey will be in town to pick up the Tony Goldman Lifetime Achievement Award.

Love Is Blind. Until You See Your Ex Again!

2015-07-01-1435779013-8857339-Marina.png
Art world celebrity/performance artist Marina Abramovic (who by the way is now art directing for Givenchy) indirectly provided this subliminal setting to a music video you’re about to witness — if not already — from her “The Art Is Present” show in 2010 at the MoMA. Back then, her live art performance consisted of spending one minute of silence, sitting just across from a complete stranger, with the goal of triggering whatever emotions each subject, including herself, would bring. Several strangers took part, but it’s her response to one in particular that you’re about to hold back tears or reach for the tissue paper.

2015-07-01-1435772395-9037067-HowIBecameTheBomb.jpg

Fast-forward or should I say, refresh to today, against the backdrop of music by Nashville musicians How I Became The Bomb, who capture on their song, “Ulay, Oh” the emotional story of former lovers Marina Abramovic and a surprise stranger — in this case her ex Ulay’s — first encounter after the two separated more than 30 years ago. You’ll know which stranger he is just by the emotional outpour from Marina, but watch closely at the 1:30 minute mark.

News Flash: love is still our strongest emotion! Currently racking up over 19 million youtube views, and that’s only within one month, this video is indeed touching. But it shouldn’t be surprising, even though some won’t get it. Those who do, the majority of us who’ve been loved, loved someone, been in love or just are longing, know that these emotions aren’t necessarily just reserved for romantic relationships either. In fact, Ulay in this case, could’ve well been a runaway child now found, a once absent biological father, the list goes on. As a result, the song took off totally organically and reached Billboard’s Top 100 (#58) last week. Like many videos out there, nothing was manipulated to make this go viral. Uploaded last October and just sitting there waiting for people to find it, the song was created by the band after the lead singer and main composer, Jon Burr accidentally wandered into MoMA during “The Artist Is Present” and saw the footage later, wrote the song, then contacted Marina for permission to use the footage for the band’s video.

Could it soon be the anti-“Gangnam Style” viral video of the summer? Most don’t bring this level of catharsis to viewers, unless of course we’re talking about practice, or it comes to those skillful cats. Who knows, maybe it boils down to ‘Love vs Cats’! Then again, there could always be another dress gone viral that causes us all to go blind.

Amy Schumer Denies She Has A ‘Blind Spot’ About Race On Twitter

Amy Schumer took to Twitter Sunday morning to defend the way she treats race in her comedy.

“I am a comic,” Schumer wrote. “I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren’t comfortable with.”

The post appears to be a response to a Guardian article published early Sunday morning that said Schumer has “a shockingly large blind spot around race” despite her large body of feminist work.

From The Guardian:

“Schumer’s stand-up repeatedly delves into racial territory tactlessly and with no apparent larger point. Her standup special features jokes like “Nothing works 100% of the time, except Mexicans” and much of her character’s dumb slut persona is predicated on the fact that the men she sleeps with are people of colour. “I used to date Latino guys,” she says in an older stand-up routine. “Now I prefer consensual.”

Schumer’s response didn’t mention the Guardian article directly, but said: “You can call it a ‘blind spot for racism’ or ‘lazy’ but you are wrong.”

The Guardian isn’t the first to take issue with the way the comic approaches race. A Daily Dot article published last week made similar claims. Schumer also drew criticism for a joke she made about “Gone Girl” and Latinas while hosting the 2015 MTV Movie Awards in April.

Blind Pooch Gets Help Moving Around From Two Loving Pups

This dog can count on her furry friends to always have her back.

Kiaya, an Akita from Waterford, Michigan, lost both her eyes by the end of last year due to a battle with glaucoma. But the 10-year-old pooch can still get around fine, all thanks to Cass and Keller — two other dogs who help guide her, functioning much like seeing eye dogs.

“Her brothers are pretty amazing at the way they help to guide her around,” Gwen Sila, the veterinary ophthalmologist who operated on Kiaya, told ABC News. “Each of them will stand on either side of her so she doesn’t bump into anything and lead her around the yard.”

The 10-year-old dog began getting assistance from Cass back in 2013 when her left eye was removed, the owner of all three dogs, Jessica VanHusen, said. Cass grew more attached to Kiaya and stayed by her side. After the pooch’s second eye was removed in November of last year, he stepped up his game. He’s become protective of his “sister.”

“Cass always allows Kiaya to get to her food dish first and waits for her to start eating,” VanHusen said, in a press release. “When I take them in the car, he leans against her to keep her steady because she sometimes gets a little off-kilter. He also loves to groom her.”

VanHusen says that Keller, who’s the youngest of the bunch, took a little longer to react to Kiaya’s condition but has become more and more careful and watchful.

Cass and Keller show incredible compassion, and VanHusen hopes that her dogs’ story will show others that caring for a special needs pet can be a beautiful thing.

“They’re an inspiration to everyone,” VanHusen said. “I hope others will see them and realize that a special needs pet deserves a chance. It takes a little effort, but it’s absolutely worth it.”

Sometimes, when an animal is in need, their furry friends step up to lend a helping hand. Tervel, a blind farm dog who is also partially deaf, was afraid to leave the safety of his bed, according to a National Geographic video. But a stray cat named Pudditat grew attached to him and later on began taking on the role of “guide cat,” helping the pooch get around.

“I think Pudditat must’ve realized that Tervel was a bit vulnerable,” the pooch’s owner said in the video. “He just seemed to know that there was a need there, somehow.”
