Blood Brother Telegraphs Rave Culture in Capsule for Selfridges

PARTY PIECES: Blood Brother has teamed with Selfridges on a capsule range for the retailer’s Music Matters initiative, which opened in-store this week.
Launched in 2011 by Nicholas Biela and James Waller, the label is known for its smart casualwear and relaxed formalwear. Waller noted that the range was inspired by the duo’s history of throwing parties. For example, rave and nightclub flyers have become graphics on T-shirts and hoodies.
“We used to put on nights where we would get our mates to DJ and get down with everyone — friends, family, colleagues,” said Waller. “It was a great way of bringing people together, which is what Blood Brother is all about.”
The 11-piece men’s wear range consists of T-shirts, hoodies and bags in hues of acid green, bright pink, blue, white and black. Prices range from 55 pounds for a T-shirt to 160 pounds for a bag.

Blood and Earth

Blood and Earth

For readers of such crusading works of nonfiction as Katherine Boo’s Beyond the Beautiful Forevers and Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains comes a powerful and captivating examination of two entwined global crises: environmental destruction and human trafficking-and an inspiring, bold plan for how we can solve them. A leading expert on modern-day slavery, Kevin Bales has traveled to some of the world’s most dangerous places documenting and battling human trafficking. In the course of his reporting, Bales began to notice a pattern emerging: Where slavery existed, so did massive, unchecked environmental destruction. But why? Bales set off to find the answer in a fascinating and moving journey that took him into the lives of modern-day slaves and along a supply chain that leads directly to the cellphones in our pockets. What he discovered is that even as it destroys individuals, families, and communities, new forms of slavery that proliferate in the world’s lawless zones also pose a grave threat to the environment. Simply put, modern-day slavery is destroying the planet. The product of seven years of travel and research, Blood and Earth brings us dramatic stories from the world’s most beautiful and tragic places, the environmental and human-rights hotspots where this crisis is concentrated. But it also tells the stories of some of the most common products we all consume-from computers to shrimp to jewelry-whose origins are found in these same places. Blood and Earth calls on us to recognize the grievous harm we have done to one another, put an end to it, and recommit to repairing the world. This is a clear-eyed and inspiring book that suggests how we can begin the work of healing humanity and the planet we share. Praise for Blood and Earth “A heart-wrenching narrative. Weaving together interviews, history, and statistics, the author shines a light on how the poverty, chaos, wars, and government corruption create the perfect storm where slavery flour

Blood Brother

Blood Brother

Blood Brother: The gene that rocked my family offers a brave and nuanced take on one of the most radioactive issues of our times: genetic testing. When her beloved brother Jim is diagnosed with Huntington’s disease-a fatal brain disease-author Mona Gable is suddenly thrust into alien, frightening territory without a road map to guide her. Still, as she recovers from the shock of her brother’s death, decisions must be made. To get tested or not? To inform her children that they may also be at risk? To speak openly and publicly about a disease that historically has been cloaked in secrecy and shame? This is a must-read for anyone who has grappled with similar issues or who suspects that they, too, may have inherited a deadly gene. Gable writes about women’s issues, health, science, travel, and international issues. Her work has appeared in Prevention, Fast Company, Los Angeles magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Pacific Standard, the Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. From 2011 to 2013, she was the feminist editor of BlogHer.com and has been a contributor to the Huffington Post since 2006. The Vampire Doll Part Four: – Blood & Angels

This 53,000 word blockbuster is the 4th and final part of a BDSM series that spans 166,000 words and 540 pages of raw male and female domination. Every erotic taste is catered for in the 4 books of the series, from interracial and lesbian relationships, to Pony-girl, master, humiliation and collared submissive training. At the heart of the story are four 18 year old girls, who for one reason or another are on the run from the Maralian authorities and seek refuge in the City of Glodkin. Mary escaped her abductor in part one and is searching for Jenny, who has been transformed into a Pony-girl. The four girls fall foul of the city laws, which dictate that any girl under 20, without a guardian, can be snatched off the streets and institutionalized into Cat houses. Mary is outwitted, by one priest, and then another, and submits to being dominated in order to protect her friend, Suzy. A stranger comes to the church and demands to have Mary for a night, to accompany him to a gambling party. All hell breaks loose at the party…The characters in this novel, experience female and male domination, training (BDSM), and bondage in rubber and leather. It also contains explicit sexual situations, and is very much a story for adults only (18+). Definitely not for those with delicate sensibilities.

File that in the didn’t-see-that-coming category: The wardrobe for Taylor Swift’s epic girl-power music video for “Bad Blood” used clothes not from luxe department stores or high-end designers but from a Los Angeles sex shop called The Stockroom. Page Six reports that the store loaned stylists working on the video $ 13,000 worth of apparel.

That dollar amount might seem kinda crazy, but don’t forget that there were 36 different outfits shown between all the ladies (and Kendrick Lamar). According to a source at the shop, the latex dress Taylor wears in the opening scene is one of theirs, as is the blouse Selena Gomez wears (see them here and here). Both of the items, pictured above, don’t come cheap—you can pick up your own for $ 235 and $ 360 respectively.

  • Every Single Outfit From Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” Music Video (All 36 of Them!)

Thank goodness last night’s Billboard Music Awards opened with the premiere of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” video because let’s be honest—the world couldn’t have waited much longer (there was seriously that much hype). All the cameos from Taylor’s high-powered posse of pals meant there were a ton of different outfits and, spoiler alert, every single one was pretty sexy.

Outfit #1: Taylor’s nude bustier and skirt
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-latex-bustier
The video opened with so much action that we didn’t get a good look at Taylor’s first outfit until she got pushed through a window. With a nude latex bustier, miniskirt, garter belt, and thigh-highs, it started things off plenty steamy.

Outfit #2: Selena Gomez’s pussy-bow blouse and miniskirt
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-selena-gomez
Selena got retro-cool in black tights and pumps, plus a swing mini and necktie blouse.

Outfit #3 and #4: Kendrick Lamar’s black suit and Taylor’s white latex two-piece
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-white-latex
Kendrick wore a black suiting to sit behind a desk, boss-style, and Taylor wore white latex with buckles to log time in a sci-fi machine that appeared to fix any wounds she sustained from Selena.

    Outfit #5: Lena Dunham’s scene-stealing gloves
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-lena-dunham
We didn’t get to see Lena’s entire outfit, but her most major accessory was on full display: those buttery soft black leather gloves.

Outfit #6 and #7: Hailee Steinfeld’s white suit, and Taylor’s armor plates and crazy boots
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-hailee-steinfeld
For her part in the trio of healers, Hailee wore all white (all the way down to her chunky-heeled Chelsea boots) and helped outfit Tay in those sick armored pieces. Also worth noting here: Taylor’s crazy, Lady Gaga-esque boots.

Outfit #8: Serayah’s bondage bra and cutout bodysuit
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-serayah
Straps were everywhere on Serayah’s sexy number—they hugged her sides, crisscrossed at the shoulder, and replaced regular bra straps.

Outfit #9: Gigi Hadid’s bra, body harness, and over-the-knee boots
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-gigi-hadid
High-waisted shorts mixed with a harness and tall boots that felt like high-fashion armor.

Outfit #10: Ellie Goulding’s long-sleeve top, shorts, and wide belt
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-ellie-goulding
The thing that pushed Ellie’s look from basic LBD to something seriously dangerous? That wide belt, complete with three straps and a ton of buckles and hoops.

    Outfit #11: Martha Hunt’s full-coverage bodysuit
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-martha-hunt
Victoria’s Secret beauty Martha was the vid’s most ninja-like warrior, spinning and twisting in long-sleeve leather.

Outfit #12 and #13: Kendrick’s suit and Taylor’s sexy black lingerie
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-lingerie
A baseball cap made Kendrick’s earlier look more casual for a ride around the training facility, while Taylor got extra saucy in black lingerie and sexy stockings.

Outfit #14 and #15: Cara Delevingne’s bandage cage one-piece and Taylor’s silver spike bra
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-cara-delevingne
Cara made her appearance in a bandage bathing suit, while Taylor got fierce with a spiked bra top and wrist-length leather gloves.

Outfit #16 and #17: Zendaya’s bra, biker shorts, and platform boots, and Taylor’s turtleneck and platform boots
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-zendaya
There was a ’90s vibe going on for Zendaya, who rocked biker shorts, high socks, and chunky platforms. Taylor rocked the same shoes but had a Princess Leia thing going with her billowy sleeve onesie.

Outfit #18 and #19: Hayley Williams’ blue cutout bodysuit and Taylor’s leather leotard and over-the-knee boots
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-paramour
As one of the few ladies permitted to wear non-black, Paramour’s Hayley really stood out in blue leather. Taylor stood by in another leather leotard and tall boots.

Outfit #20: Taylor’s white jumpsuit and fur hood
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-snow-suit
For her turn out of all-black, Taylor wore a white short suit (that looked, shape-wise, a lot like this red carpet pick).

Outfit #21: Lily Aldridge’s white zippered two-piece, fur hood, and fur arm warmers
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-lily-aldridge
Lily’s outfit mimicked Taylor’s, though there were key differences. Hers was a two-piece with metallic silver accents and featured more fuzz on her arm warmers.

    Outfit #22 and #23: Karlie Kloss’s and Taylor’s all-black boxing outfits
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-karlie-kloss-boxing
The real-life pals battled in the ring in tiny one-pieces that could be marketed as super-sexy singlets.

Outfit #24 and #25: Jessica Alba’s and Taylor’s leather motorcycle racing jumpsuits
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-leather-suit-motorcycle
For the video’s fastest scene (speed racers!), Taylor and Jessica both wore slick leather racing suits.

Outfit #26: Taylor’s latex and leather jumpsuit
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-leather-jumpsuit
A matte leather jumpsuit with geometric latex lines would have stood out, flare or no flare.

Outfit #27and #28: Mariska Hargitay’s fringed jacket and Ellen Pompeo’s bold shoulders
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-mariska-hargitay-ellen-pompeo
Mariska’s statement jacket featured trendy fringe all over, while Ellen showed off some sharp shoulders with her structured shrug.

Outfit #29: Cindy Crawford’s leather bodysuit and body harness
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-cindy-crawford
Cindy looked every inch the glamazon warrior princess in high-shine leather with a harness and leg holster on her thigh.

    Outfit #s 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35: Lots of leather, lots of metal accents
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-video-finale
For the mini movie’s big battle scene, Taylor and her ladies rallied in uniforms ready for high-fashion fighting. From left to right, Hayley, Zendaya, Gigi, Tay, Martha, Serayah, and Cara all showed off a mix of leather shorts, bustiers, and boots.

    Outfit #36: Selena’s black bustier
    taylor-swift-bad-blood-selena-gomez-bustier
As the leader of the opposite army, Selena had the same vibe going on: a sexy bra top with sheer long sleeves and skinny straps.

Taylor Swift performed (at least one of) her own stunts in “Bad Blood,” her latest action-packed music video.

Need proof? Here’s a video of Swift messing up one of those stunts in a big way, which she shared Monday on Instagram:

A video posted by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Fortunately, Swift wasn’t injured in the incident, though she looks to have hit the deck awfully hard. “I’m good,” the pop superstar assured concerned onlookers after tumbling through the wall. “I forgot to keep running.”

In a caption along with the blooper, Swift encouraged readers to “Go to 1:42 of the #BadBloodMusicVideo to see the take where I got it right.”

“This, however, was the first take,” she added. “#stuntFAIL.”

For reference, here’s the shot that ended up making the final cut:

First Nighter: ‘Tamburlaine Parts I and II,’ ‘Tristan & Yseult’ Blood Spillage

Late in the Kneehigh production of Tristan & Yseult, at St. Ann’s Warehouse, a character says, “It’s hard to keep things white.” She’s referring to how easily white apparel can be soiled, often by blood.

I’d been thinking the same thing, since my attending the evening performance of Tristan & Yseult, followed my presence at a matinee performance of Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine, Parts I and II in the Theatre for a New Audience version, at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center. During the current run there, buckets of blood are being spilled daily.

And I mean the “buckets” reference literally. In this undertaking, a young boy carrying a bucket often arrives to pour (stage) blood over yet another of the marauding Tamburlaine’s victims. The soakings happen so often to any of the characters who unwisely choose to wear white that I’d made a note about it.

“Anything white,” I’d written, and that’s even before a figure in modern dress — a suit, tie and white shirt — showed up late in proceedings, where otherwise Tom Piper’s costumes were armor-era specific. Was the contemporary get-up intended as a reminder that such things go on today? Never mind. It’s just that before long the pristine white shirt was, you guessed it, covered with blood.

Director Michael Boyd has conflated Marlowe’s plays into one three-hour treatment interrupted by a single half-hour intermission. A patron can’t help thinking the interval is that long in order to afford stagehands time to wipe up the blood spilled in the first half. After all, in the second act so much more will drench the floor and the long transparent plastic curtain hung at the back of the thrust stage that another intense cleaning will be necessary.

Let’s just say director-editor Boyd has the courage of his theatrical convictions. Wars are marked and marred by bloodshed, and he’s out to get that across as graphically as he can. Keep in mind that Boyd headed the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2002 to 2012 and during his reign offered Shakespeare’s history plays at Stratford-upon-Avon and North London’s Roundhouse in some of the most stunning productions I’ve ever seen.

So, not so much despite the bloodbath on view here as because of it, he’s perpetuated another stunner in this Tamburlaine. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in what a top-flight director can do with a two-part classic that few directors even want to take on. Certainly, the works don’t often show up on these shores.

One reason for the infrequent appearance is that while the plays are bold and shocking, they’re not multi-dimensional. The brilliant Marlowe (1564-1593) was only 23 when they were first presented in 1587. They’re a young man’s flights of fancy. You might say they’re full of sound and fury but signifying if not nothing, then not a great deal of emotional depth.

In the course of the two parts, Tamburlaine (John Douglas Thompson) begins by abducting Zenocrate (Merritt Janson), who’s meant to be another’s bride, before he sets out to depose every monarch ruling in a wide swath around the eastern end of the Mediterranean. On he goes trampling over everything and everyone in his path through the Ottoman Empire, Persia and Central Asia. Before he’s finished in this outing, he’s perched atop a carriage that contains a lower cage heaped with gold crowns.

To say Marlowe is repetitious only suggests the problem. On the other hand, the iambic pentameter in which Tamburlaine expresses himself is mesmerizing. The crude warrior definitely has the gift of gorgeous gab. As he approaches each realm he plans to conquer, he addresses the rulers he’s about to bloody with irresistible rhetoric. He’s even high-toned when insisting that Calyphas (James Udom), the eldest of his three sons, is cowardly and deserves to be done in.

Marlowe’s Tamburlaine is so infallibly victorious — with percussionist Arthur Solari, in a niche above the stage, accompanying his destructive path with unceasing cacophony — that he meets no foe worthy of him. He’s only vanquished at last by illness. When onlookers are longing to see him get a comeuppance, this demise feels like a cheat. But apparently Elizabethan audiences were thrilled with it just as it is.

The imposing Thompson, who’s become one of today’s most accomplished classical actors, is astonishing for both stamina and declaratory prowess. How does any actor remember the order in which Tamburlaine’s speeches go, let alone memorize them? Thompson has no problem with his myriad lines.

Many of the other cast members, all doing Boyd proud, take on several roles. This means that Saxon Palmer, for one, gets to be bloodied again and again. After a while, the bloodstained actors become a metaphor for Marlowe repeating himself. More than that, the violence in Tamburlaine takes on the air of Marlowe’s foreseeing his own death. When he was 29, he was slain in a barroom brawl.

Listening to this bard’s poetry throughout the Tamburlaine parts and aware that Shakespeare and Marlowe were great pals and influences on each other, anyone might entertain the thought that had Marlowe lived longer, his output as he and friend Will continued to challenge each other, would likely have been more memorable than his still exciting Tamburlaine dramas.
    *****************************************************
The blood in Kneehigh’s Tristan & Yseult is less than what’s in Tamburlaine Parts I and II and is stylized. Emma Rice, the company founder and adapter here of the Cornish myth — with writers Carl Grose and Anna Maria Murphy — has something other than seeing red about which she wants to discourse.

Like Boyd, she’s greatly theatrical with the matter. On a Bill Mitchell set that conjures a one-ring circus, she begins by having Yseult (Hannah Vassallo) and her French-speaking Tristan (Dominic Marsh) enjoy their infatuation, despite Yseult’s obligation to older, less buff King Mark (Mike Shepherd). In one sequence, the young lovers swing from separate ropes in giddy infatuation.

Their fun is augmented by a good deal of cast buffoonery, so much so that before the first-act ends, the goofiness has become attenuated. The cuteness, which is narrated by a character identified as Whitehands (Kirsty Woodward, in an Igor Cassini-like suit, pillbox hat and gloves), goes on too long.

This isn’t to say the clowning by Niall Ashdown as Yseult’s nurse Brangian, Damon Daunno as King Mark’s right-hand man Frocin, along with Robert Lukay and Tom Jackson Greaves doesn’t continue to amuse, often as they scamper about in knitted hoods reminiscent of chain-mail head coverings.

The second Tristan & Yseult act is when Rice comes to her deliberate point. Whitehands has been talking about her place among the unloved. A neon sign above the set reads “The Club of the Unloved.” (The band on an upper level plays, among other songs of love-gone-wrong, “Perfidia” and “Love Hurts.”)

The message Rice forcibly wants to stress is that the passion shared by Tristan and Yseult isn’t available to everyone, is perhaps available only to the few. Others, like Whitehands, may witness it but never get to share in it. They’re condemned to one-sided romances. The white-gloved woman asks, “What becomes of so much wasted love?” While she’s imploring, Richard Wagner’s “Liebestod” roils, an homage to the Tristan-Yseult devotion, even if their love has been consummated but not fully requited.

Love both requited and un- is apparently an abiding theme for Rice, whose inventive Brief Encounter pastiche is what first earned her and Kneehigh stateside praise. (How personal a condition is unsatisfying love for Rice, a spectator could wonder?) Again in her Brief Encounter and against musical underscoring — Rachmaninoff, as Noel Coward used in his film — a pair of lovers have a short-lived but all-encompassing affair.

So at this point Rice, like Marlowe, has two companion parts. It’ll be interesting to see if she comes up with another to complete a love trilogy. Maybe Rice fans can second-guess her by combing through accounts of lovers who live out their mutual feelings while classical music throbs away in the background.

Cocaine Withdrawals and Blood Transfusions: Clive Owen On The Season Finale Of ‘The Knick’

WARNING: Major spoilers ahead. Do not read on if you haven’t seen the Season 1 finale of “The Knick.”

“The Knick” ended its 10-episode debut season on Friday, and the hope each character found in his or her new beginnings was bookended with a sense of dread. Thackery discovers an unfortunate way to kick his cocaine habit in the form of 1900-era heroin. Barrow bests Bunky Collier, but Mr. Wu learns of his manipulation. Cornelia’s wedding day arrives, but she’s haunted by the thought of her clandestine abortion and her feelings for Dr. Edwards. And Edwards himself is given the chance to shine while Thack is out of commission, but he, too, must suffer knowing Cornelia is off vowing to love another man. No character wins, but the show surely does. This was a stunner of a season finale, exemplifying the best of Steven Soderbergh’s slow-burning drama. HuffPost Entertainment caught up with star Clive Owen, who plays Thackery, to discuss the finale.

Did you study cocaine withdrawal to decide what that would look like once Thackery’s supply runs out?
I did as much research as I could. The great thing is that cocaine shortage again was based on fact. Everything in the show is inspired by real events. The idea of starving Thackery of his drug and then coming back and this more than ever was a brilliant way of climaxing. To go through that period of struggle, of not having the drug and then getting it and taking too much, was always, I felt, a great way to build him toward the end.

Nurse Elkin’s role in procuring cocaine is fascinating. Does Thackery really love her, or does he only appreciate when she can do things for him?
I think by that time he’s a desperate addict. When she delivers that and when she finally comes through with the cocaine, he’s like, “She’s the most beautiful, loving person.” He’s a desperate addict by this point. Just the fact that she’s delivering what he needs is everything.

We see him compete to advance various surgical procedures, but he does it mostly out of ego so he’ll always be considered the best. How much does Thackery actually care about medicine?
I really do think by the ending couple of episodes that he’s completely lost his way. He’s a complete paranoid, competitive mess by the end. He is brilliant, but by this point he’s in a desperate place and he’s not thinking straight. That’s kind of where we’re taking him — he’s heading for a fall.

Many of the surgery scenes are both graphic and relatively primitive. Is there a doctor on set guiding how they should look?
Yes, we had the most amazing expert, a guy called Dr. Stanley Burns, who runs this archive of literally hundreds of thousands of photographs from this period in the world. The show is like his fantasy come to life. He has an unbelievable wealth of material; he has medical documents that were handed between doctors at the turn of the century, he has instruments that were used at the time. He was there for every single operation and would be able to describe exactly how it would have been done, so we leaned on him tremendously.

That blood-transfusion scene in the finale is wild. Surely some of that is CGI.
Really, I have to say that the prosthetics guy on this thing did an absolutely unbelievable job throughout, and there’s so little CGI in this whole series. Everything is totally convincing, even to the naked eye, including that transfusion scene. That was the one scene where I remember I turned to Steven at one point and said, “How on earth are we ever going to bring back Thackery from this?” Will we ever be able to redeem him from this? I mean, in such a coked-up state, to be attempting something like that with this poor little girl, it’s a wild as it could get. But that’s the make of the show.

Do you think Bertie made the right choice in remaining so loyal to Thackery, especially at the end when he realizes what’s been going on?
It’s difficult because Thackery does eventually go off the rails, but there’s no question that, at the beginning when we meet him, Thackery is a genius. He’s learned an incredible lot. That’s the journey of what happens, but there’s no question that Bertie would have learned an awful lot, but he’s also had to withstand an awful lot.

    clive owen the knick

What do you think happened to Abigail and her syphilis nose?
We might not have seen the last of her. I won’t say anymore on that.

We’ve seen shocking surgeries all season, but the most jarring moment probably comes when we see that Eleanor’s teeth have been removed because that’s how doctors thought they’d cure mental illness.
I agree with you. It is shocking, and what’s shocking is that that was the practice at the time. That was real. They actually really did think that. And the scary thing, when you do a show like this, is that what we’d be doing in 40 or 50 years’ time would make us think, “How on Earth could we have thought that was right?” How on Earth could a doctor really have believed that?

It must be hard to shoot in contemporary downtown New York but make every scene look and feel like it’s set in 1900.
Steven has just the most incredible people around him that he’s been working with for a long time. What was really incredible is when you film on one of those outside days, you’d come to the exterior of the hospital and you’d walk on and everything would already be up and running. You’d do a shot in the carriage and it would pull up and you’d get out and 20 minutes later we’d be on to something else. It was so incredibly efficient, and they were so focused in getting those big outside scenes nailed so quickly. There were very challenging days — we were shooting real New York Chinatown for 1900 Chinatown. We’d find a block in there that we’d dress and shoot, but you can imagine the logistics of trying to pull that off. They went in there and they were just incredibly together.

What’s the most fascinating thing you’ve learned about medicine in 1900?
The thing that you’re kind of left with is just how much they were shooting from the hip. It was a time of change; things were coming big and fast. They were rethinking things on a weekly basis. At the time, doctors were sharing information across America and Europe. It was a wildly exciting time in terms of the breakthroughs they were making, probably this time in this period more than any other period.

You’ve worked with Robert Altman, Mike Nicholas, Alfonso Cuarón and Spike Lee. What does Steven Soderbergh, the consummate multitasker, bring to “The Knick” that no other director could?
I think the reason no other director could have taken this on and done it the way that he did it is that he has done everything. He directs, he operates, he lights, he edits, and it’s a singular vision. It’s 10 hours of television that completely comes back to one man and a singular vision. To have that is really extraordinary because I don’t know of any of the other directors you mentioned or any director that I’ve worked with who could do that and could hold the whole canal like he approached it at the speed with which he approached it. And he dealt with something so rich and detailed. He’s extraordinary in that way; there is no one like him. For an actor to work with that is a real privilege because he’s so on top of all aspects of what’s going on that you’re kind of left just worrying about your acting, which is a great place to be because you’re so sure. It’s a one-stop gig. You know that it all comes back to him. There’s something kind of great about that, about shooting a scene and there not being that dialogue of, “What if we did this?” or “What if we did that?” No. It goes back to that guy and his vision and his taste and his talent. I’m telling you he’s a hugely, hugely impressive person.

When does Season 2 start filming?
We go into pre-production soon and I think I’m heading out to New York for January.

What do you hope to see in Thackery’s future now that he’s been exposed to heroin?
He’s been so edgy in his story and so visceral and dangerous. What’s great is the idea of being able to go into the next season and it could just pick up and hit the ground running, taking it further and exploring new territories. I’ve got a number of the scripts already and it’s just really exciting where we can take it.

Eat Often, Feel Great & Lose Weight: An Eating Plan to Curb Appetite and Prevent Low Blood Sugar

Eat Often, Feel Great & Lose Weight: An Eating Plan to Curb Appetite and Prevent Low Blood Sugar

Are sudden feelings of intense hunger or cravings sabotaging your willpower to lose excess weight once and for all?

It is almost impossible to stick with a calorie restricted diet long enough to reach your weight loss goal if it leaves you feeling hungry. Low blood sugar can cause a lack of concentration, irritability as well as intense hunger. It leads to an instinctive urge to eat–especially sweets.

    The recommendations cover how to:

    * Increase satiety (the absence of hunger).
    * Time meals and snacks.
    * Choose low calorie density and high satiety foods.
    * Choose portions of foods you like from the different food groups to balance meals and snacks according to individual estimated needs.
    * Learn visualize appropriate food portions.
    * Make carbohydrates your primary fuel source as nature intended
    * Improve energy and concentration levels throughout the day.

This eating plan is also safe for the healthy individuals who do not experience low blood sugar.

Who better to ask for nutrition advice than a Registered Dietitian? There are many weight-loss books availalbe, but few with such professional backing. Denise Dubé, RD, PDt, CNSD, BBA has over 10 years experience as a clinical dietitian and nutrition consultant in the USA and Canada.

    By Alia’s Blood

    By Alia’s Blood

In the end, the Miami paper would nail it in their editorial. “This thing was about Alia, all about her, and her swim that fateful night.”The story began 28 years ago with a reporter stationed at a Coral Gables hospital located hard by Biscayne Bay. It concerned the mysterious death of a pregnant Honduran female and a deadly curse they say followed her from the Bay Islands. Alia, descendant of a 17th-century pirate and a woman taken from a captured slaver, was island nobility but chose to flee her family and an arranged marriage to be with the man she loved. Her daughter lived. Rumor had it that it was predestined the newborn would carry the curse, pass it to her surviving firstborn female offspring, then die. So it would travel, daughter to daughter, down through the generations until the bloodline was broken. The attending doctor filled in the required blanks of the death certificate and moved on, duty complete, official cause of death listed as cardiac arrest. Then, as is often the case in legends of cursed bloodlines, the tale sank into the tapestry of local lore. Now, after years of silence, it surfaces, exploding into the public consciousness. Serena, woman child of Alia, must now face her mother’s legacy–and break the curse or die.

‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Episode 11 Recap: Blood Ties

Note: Do not read on unless you’ve seen “American Horror Story: Coven,” Episode 11, titled “Protect The Coven.”

Sometimes when I settle in to watch “American Horror Story: Coven,” after the first few major developments of each episode, I feel like I’ve returned to the start of the show. It’s like I forgot to save a video game and I’m back several chapters and achievements, with all that time wasted. In other words, nothing that happens on “Coven” has any consequence; the words “dead,” “alive,” “magic,” and “witch” basically have no meaning. Queenie’s alive? OK. She was dead (at least gone for us) for quite some time. Kyle’s here! Where has he been? The Axeman? Ugh, you’re still here? You girls have what magic now? I can’t even keep track. Spalding?! Spalding’s … er … still dead, but alive in the attic?! Everything is just so nonsensical and convenient that it can be downright infuriating.

OK, whew, I had to get that out of the way. Now, if I look at tonight’s episode in a completely detached manner, I have to say I enjoyed it way more than last week’s mediocre midseason return. This week had gore (and plenty of it), scenes that were actually difficult to watch (some for a bad reason), and several great lines of dialogue. Approaching “Coven” as a series of insane vignettes is really the only way to do it justice. It simply cannot be judged as a normal TV show would. With that in mind…

Madame LaLaurie and her bloodlust are the obvious focus of this episode. Is she truly a monster? Yes, it turns out she is. This passive housemaid of the past few episodes is nothing like the LaLaurie we first met on “Coven,” when she was torturing her slaves and daughters down in the cellar. We flash back to 1830 and witness her moving to New Orleans from Paris, and see how her penchant for cutting off limbs and disemboweling living creatures has manifested. By cutting a head off a chicken (nice, cute touch: my thoughts immediately went to her head in the box), LaLaurie’s remorseless violence is unleashed. She finds an injured slave and, well, does what she does.

(This is a total aside, and probably best to discuss in a bigger forum, but two things really bothered me about the slave/gardener torture sequences in this episode. One, they were really gratuitous, and this is coming from a horror fan. Slave torture isn’t something I’m comfortable watching. Ever. And to draw it out, showing most of it, is tasteless. Which leads me to the second thing: in this particular climate, where the issue of slavery is very prominent in current pop culture, I’m having trouble understanding why Murphy & Co. are so blatantly displaying slavery torture. It’s almost like a slap in the face to the seriousness of it. Also, if you’ve recently watched “12 Years A Slave,” as I have, the torture scenes will be just unbearable in the context of a campy, oft-comedic show.)

Thank goodness there’s nothing but levity in between the gory bits, or else this would have been a really tough slog. Indeed, the greatest ability of “Coven” is to push you to the brink (i.e. – turning your head away from the screen) and then back again (i.e. – your face hurts from laughing at Angela Bassett’s latest remark). Even at Nan’s funeral, all the players get together and say goodbye at what’s supposed to be a grim occasion. Instead they barely care about Nan’s passing (Madison: “Have you met me?”), and Queenie interrupts whatever actual mourning is going on when she arrives with LaLaurie on a leash. Queenie has also somehow gotten LaLaurie’s head back on, which is a new power she seems to have attained, among others that we’re not aware of yet.

Back at Robichaux, LaLaurie is forced to return to her housemaid status. In one of my favourite scenes so far on “Coven,” we take a delightful romp through the house with LaLaurie as she takes care of each of the houseguests, cleaning, cooking and tidying. It’s fun to watch her deal with each character’s eccentricities and attitude, and then watch it come to a head when the poor gardener cuts his hand with shears. LaLaurie sees his bleeding, dripping hand and it all comes back to her: the torturing, slicing, the thirst for blood. She tells Cordelia that she’ll take care of the gardener, and proceeds to take him upstairs to Spalding’s doll room and basically mutilate him. Again, sorry, this scene I couldn’t watch.

When she looks up from her dirty work, there’s Spalding. Dead? Yep. Alive? Yep. I can’t tell you what’s going on with him. No idea. Regardless, he’s there, and he admires LaLaurie’s work, calling it “art.” Hmm, OK. In exchange for her retrieving him a rare doll from 1895, he tells her he’ll give her pills to make Marie mortal, so LaLaurie can kill her. When he busts out the Benadryl and LaLaurie couldn’t possibly know what the pills actually do, I thought Spalding was punishing her for her gruesome act. But no, he was just doing that so she’d get Marie out of the way. He knocks Marie out, she falls down the stairs, and advises LaLaurie to bury her. The cock of her eyebrow indicates that that’s probably exactly what she’s going to do.

Queenie has moved back into Robichaux, but you’d barely know it (where was she as Marie was being attacked by Spalding and LaLaurie?). After she tells off Cordelia in a very harsh way (and might I add, undeserved), she doesn’t appear again. I guess she’s on reserve for next week, when her random powers will come in handy. Straight-up, I hated Queenie in this episode. How does she have any reason to be angry at anybody? She abandoned the coven. Ugh, she’d better not be Supreme. Anyway, her vitriolic chat with Cordelia sends the headmistress over the edge. She takes a pair of gardening clippers to the eyes, re-blinding herself so she can regain her second sight. For future reference, Cordelia, there has to be a better way — couldn’t you just ask one of the other witches to put you into a deep sleep and do it humanely? Geez.

In another part of town, Delphi is pissed. Hank’s father is certain the witches are behind his company’s disintegration, and he’s right. In what isn’t the best move in these circumstances, he vows to make a deal with them, and when they finally trust him, kill them all. Talk about gross underestimation. These guys are the worst witchhunters ever! When he and his partners meet with Marie and Fiona, it’s clear that it’s he and his business buddies who’ll end up dead, not the witches. In a “fun” gore scene (this is the kind of “AHS” I love), the witchhunters get picked off by Fiona’s lover, The Axeman, while Marie texts on her phone and Fiona sips a filthy martini. I always enjoy a good boardroom killing scene. Nothing says love…

And speaking of love, what in the hell was that end scene? We’re supposed to believe that Zoe and Kyle are some star-crossed lovers, fated to be together. Why? Because she kills every man who sleeps with her, and Kyle is the only one who can survive it? Because she accepts the fact that he’s already died, and now he’s not all there? I don’t know where this suddenly came from, but when Myrtle was talking about their pure and true love, I was trying to think of where and when Zoe and Kyle ever outwardly displayed it. It’s been lukewarm in public at best, right? Anyway, Myrtle gives them bus tickets to Epcot (classic), and they’re on their way in a bizarre episode-ending running shot as they get on the bus to Orlando. Not like it matters anyway, because you know those two will be back next week. As much as I want to believe it, we’re not going to see them enjoying the World Showcase at Epcot.

Witch, Please: (every week I’m going to award the witchiest witch of them all) This is a tough one, since no one really used their powers this week. I guess it has to go to Madison for fighting with Zoe and knocking stuff off the wall, and nailing Zoe in the head with a light fixture. Say, were there any repercussions from that? Guess not. Also, Madison had some amazing lines this week.

    Random Thoughts:

    • The plotline involving Fiona and The Axeman is too boring for me to get into. They were talking about moving to some farm or something, to be free from his axe and her coven. I sincerely hope the last scene of “Coven” isn’t the pair driving out of New Orleans in a pickup or sitting on the farm’s porch. Oh God, that’s totally how it’s going to end, isn’t it?
    • The second-last scene, of Spalding back in his nightie holding the baby Marie was supposed to give to Papa Legba, was so disturbing I think I repressed it. I don’t care if a man is obsessed with dolls, but there’s a creepy line to cross, and “AHS” spewed blood all over that line. It’s also clear what’ll happen here: Spalding will be left in the coven with the little girl to raise, ensuring the coven lives on.
    • When Myrtle is explaining that Zoe must leave, Zoe’s quote is the best: “I’m so lost here.” Yes, we know. That phrase works on so many levels.
    • When Spalding turned the 1895 doll around in his hands and smelled its bum, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cringe.
    • Madison: “You flush my shit, bitch.”
    • Come to think of it, LaLaurie’s preceding comment, “You left your dirt in the commode,” is actually funnier.
    • Myrtle, who’s writing your dialogue? “In the fall, the rotting leaves smell like an Olympian’s ejaculate!” I’ve never heard anything like that — ever — in my 30ish years of TV watching.
    • LaLaurie: “Well, turds on that!”
