Vera Wang Suits Up Eagles Cheerleaders for Super Bowl Showdown With Patriots

DESIGNER SIDELINES: While some advertisers will be forking over $ 5 million for 30-second Super Bowl commercials, Vera Wang will be getting some air time for free.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleaders will be rallying for Nick Foles and the rest of the team wearing uniforms created by the New York designer. In 2003, Wang became the first big-name designer to suit up a NFL cheerleading squad. No slouch in the athletic department, Wang herself was a competitive skater before she segued into fashion. Through the years, Wang has suited up all sorts of elite athletes — Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek among them. At this month’s Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the undefeated U.S. figure skater Nathan Chen will hit the ice wearing costumes designed by Wang. “I have always been an athlete, a supporter of so many disciplines, a true fan, and very proud and humbled by having dressed so many athletes in competition and for many of their weddings and red carpet moments!‎” she said.
Considering 111 million tuned in for last year’s Super Bowl, Wang’s uniforms are set to be seen worldwide. “Whenever one designs for athletes, or performers, being viewed from 360-degree angles becomes imperative. But TV adds

Prince’s Brother Says His Hologram Will Not Be Used During the Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Prince’s family and friends were quick to shoot down reports that the late singer’s hologram would make an appearance during Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl LII halftime show on Sunday.

The “Purple Rain” singer’s family denied it was happening on Saturday through a Twitter account managed by his brother, Omarr Baker.

In the tweet, Baker shared a no entry sign along with “#PrinceHologram,” after TMZ reported Timberlake had a hologram planned in honor of Prince and his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the Super Bowl will be held.

Timberlake’s rep did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The NFL also was not immediately available for comment.

When a fan asked Baker, “Does this mean you didn’t authorize it or that it’s not happening?” he responded with, “Both.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Prince’s one-time fiancée and longtime friend and collaborator, musician Sheila E., also weighed on the hologram rumor on Twitter, writing, “Prince told me don’t ever let anyone do a hologram of me. Not cool if this happens!”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Prince’s Super Bowl XLI halftime performance in 2007 is still considered one of the best halftime shows of all time, particularly after the singer performed during an actual downpour of rain while singing “Purple Rain.”

While the icon’s image might not be making an appearance with Timberlake, the “Filthy” singer cited Prince as a big influence for his performance during a press conference on Thursday, according to Billboard.

“In my opinion, the greatest all-around musician in pop culture,” Timberlake said. “The time I got to spend around him, with him, talking about music — those are memories that I’ll take with me forever.”

When he was asked during the conference if he would be bringing out any special guests, the crooner admitted, “Well… no.”

“To be honest, I had a ton of grand ideas about special guests. There’s a whole list. I think Vegas has a lot of odds on it, from ‘NSYNC to Jay to Chris Stapleton to Janet,” he said.

Instead, he said he wanted to shine the spotlight on his trusty longtime band, the Tennessee Kids. “I feel like they’re my special guests and I’m excited to rock the stage.”

Timberlake — who revealed he’s “doing a few things with this halftime show they’ve never quite done before” — confirmed that he’ll play his Oscar-nominated smash “Can’t Stop the Feeling” but warned, “That’s all I am giving away! I’m not giving away anything else, so don’t even try it.

Remembering Whitney Houston with Her Super Bowl National Anthem Performance That United the Country

Ten days after declaring war is a lousy time for a party, let alone a Super Bowl.

On Jan. 17, 1991, an armed coalition led by the United States commenced Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf, marking the first major military action of the post-terrorism age. Less than two weeks later, the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills prepared for their own conflict as Super Bowl XXV kicked off in Tampa, Florida. Fears that Saddam Hussein would target this, the most American of sporting events, led some NFL officials to consider rescheduling. The big game would proceed as planned, but the festive mood of Jan. 27 was damped by the grim realities of a world at war.

Goodyear’s iconic blimp was grounded, and in its place flew Black Hawk air patrol. Instead of tailgate barbecues, the Tampa Stadium parking lot was crammed with concrete barriers and chain-link fences. Machine-gun wielding SWAT teams patrolled the roof of the arena while ushers carried metal detector wands down below. The mood wasn’t much brighter in the locker rooms. “Players were discussing privately if there would be a draft,” former Giants tight end Howard Cross later told the New York Post. “And whether our younger brothers might be drafted.”

It was into this tense, foreboding atmosphere that Whitney Houston strode onto the 50-yard line in a casual white tracksuit with red and blue stripes and matching white sneakers. With her dark ringlets pulled back in a wide headband, the 27-year-old looked more like an Olympian than the bonafide pop star who had scored back-to-back No. 1s the previous year with “I’m Your Baby Tonight” and “All the Man That I Need.”

She was there to open the game by singing the national anthem, Francis Scott Key’s “Star-Spangled Banner.” The tradition seemed charmingly quaint given the dire circumstances. “It was an intense time for a country,” Houston remembered in 2000. “A lot of our daughters and sons were overseas fighting. I could see, in the stadium, I could see the fear, the hope, the intensity, the prayers going up. And I just felt, ‘This is the moment.’”

The moment became the most famous of her career. Armed with no more than a song, Houston galvanized an uncertain nation.

Shortly after her performance was announced on Nov. 6, 1990—Election Day—Houston conferred with her longtime musical director Ricky Minor about the best way to wring every drop of passion and emotion from the ubiquitous tune. She spoke highly of a version sung by Marvin Gaye at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, a soulful, stripped down rendition backed by an electric drum machine.

Minor tracked down a VHS tape of Gaye’s performance—not an easy task in the pre-YouTube-era—and studied it closely to find elements he could incorporate in his own arrangement. After careful analysis, he decided to take the unorthodox approach of changing the anthem’s time signature. “The original version is in 3/4 time, which is more like a waltz,” Minor explained to ABC News in 2012. “What we tried to do was to put it in 4/4 meter… We wanted to give her a chance to phrase it in such a way that she would be able to take her time and really express the meaning.” Slowing the tempo would give Houston a chance to eke out each subtle nuance of every lyric.

The demands of a live television broadcast coupled with the challenges of an outdoor performance proved too much of a liability for event organizers. To ensure a flawless rendition, producers had to get creative. “NFL policy is that when they have a performer singing the national anthem for live TV, they request the performer record what they call a protection copy, just in case the singer has laryngitis, the day of the Super Bowl,” Houston’s publicist, Regina Brown, explained to JET in 1991.

After recording the instrumental backing track with the Florida Orchestra in early January, Minor sent a copy to Houston to allow her to practice. As it happened, she never did. “I was busy doing a screen test for a film with Kevin Costner,” was her excuse when she met up with Minor in a Miami studio two weeks prior to the Super Bowl. But she was a quick study. After listening to the track only once, she walked into the vocal booth and belted the version that would mesmerize millions across the globe “Amazingly, it was done in one take,” NFL executive Jim Steeg confirmed to SportsBusinessDaily.com. “All was in place for what many of us thought would be one of the greatest versions of the national anthem ever performed.”

Not everyone was impressed. Some NFL officials were less than pleased by what they saw as a radical reimagining of a cherished piece of Americana “They thought the harmonies were too different, that it was sacrilegious,” Minor told USA Today. Just days before the broadcast, NFL brass placed a call to Houston’s father and manager, John, begging him to force the singer to record a new version. “The conversation was brief,” Steeg told ESPN.com. “There would be no rerecording.”

Houston was surprisingly grounded when Super Bowl Sunday finally arrived. “It wasn’t a lot of hype going in,” her brother, Gary, later told EW. “She was like a little girl going into a football game — not really understanding the magnitude of this game. But she was very excited, like, ‘Isn’t this great?’” Seventy-four thousand sports fans filled Tampa Stadium, adding to an estimated 115 million watching on television. For the first time the game was broadcast internationally, allowing troops stationed across the globe to tune in. The performance would be for them.

It’s been said that Houston lip-synced “The Star-Spangled Banner” on this day, but that’s not entirely fair. Even while the tape played she sang her heart out, pouring her inimitable voice into a dead microphone. The only ones could who could hear her magnificent artistry truly live that day were servicemen and women, representing all branches of the armed forces, bearing the colors of each of the 50 states, gathered before her on the field.

For the rest of us, the grand unveiling of Houston’s stunning interpretation was nothing short of a revelation. “Whitney was at the height of her vocal powers, and her performance of the song was electrifying,” Houston’s label head and industry icon Clive Davis wrote in his 2013 memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life. “It was soulful, passionate, supremely confident, and rousing.” As she hit the final climactic high note—an E-flat above middle C—on the word “free,” four F-16 fighter jets performed a ceremonial fly-by in the skies above. “It was a moment of unforgettable drama and pride,” writes Davis.

Only a genius could take a song that, by design, belongs to all citizens, and make it her own. Make no mistake; this was not a selfish act, but a selfless one. The African-American community has had a troubled relationship to “The Star-Spangled Banner” dating back to more than a century before Colin Kaepernick. “The machinery of state violence has too often been used against black people for a song about bombs and rockets to hold much appeal,” writes journalist and screenwriter Cinque Henderson in the New Yorker. The NAACP named James Weldon Johnson’s poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as the “Black National Anthem” in 1919, and even Martin Luther King preferred “My Country, Tis of Thee.”

On Jan. 27, 1991, Houston, a strong, confident, supremely talented black woman took back the national anthem and made it speak for all Americans.

The primary role of an artist is to reflect and articulate the mood and feeling of those unable or unwilling to express these complex emotions for themselves. When she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Houston succeeded like few have, before or since. “It was a time when Americans needed to believe in our country.” Houston reflected in an interview with PEOPLE shortly after the event. “I remember standing there and looking at all those people, and it was like I could see in their faces the hopes and prayers and fears of the entire country.”

To many, the song outshone the outcome of the game (the Giants beat the Bills 20 to 19). The response was so overwhelming that Arista Records took the unprecedented step of releasing the version as a single just a few weeks later. It became the fastest-selling song in the label’s history up to that point, climbing to No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Houston donated her portion of the proceeds to charities supporting soldiers and families involved in the Persian Gulf War.

When the worst fears of Super Bowl XXV became reality a decade later on September 11th, Houston’s anthem once again served as a rallying cry. It was re-released to raise funds for firefighters and victims of the terrorist attacks. This time it peaked at No. 6, making Houston the only artist to take “The Star-Spangled Banner” into the Billboard Top 10. It would be her final trip to the top of the charts.

84 Lumber CEO Says Controversial Super Bowl Ad Was Not Pro-Immigration – and Trump’s Wall ‘Represents Security’

The controversial Super Bowl commercial for 84 Lumber about a migrant family crossing the border into the U.S. was not meant to be “pro-immigration” or a political statement at all, the company’s CEO Maggie Hardy Magerko tells PEOPLE.

Hardy Magerko, who took over ownership of her family’s $ 2.86 billion company in 1992, says she is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and believes that a border wall – which featured prominently in the TV spot – “is a need.”

“We need to keep America safe,” the 51-year-old executive tells PEOPLE. “America needs to be safe so you and I can have the liberty to talk… The wall, I think it represents, to me, security. I like security.”

Hardy Magerko says she personally helped develop the commercial and its striking imagery, but her personal beliefs don’t play into the commercial.

“This came from the heart and I didn’t do it for personal gain,” she says. “It’s not about me or my beliefs or the wall, it’s about individuals… treating people with dignity and respect.”

She adds: “My intent was to show, through the mother and daughter, that through struggles we will do anything we possibly can to make a better place for our children. If I thought the wall was negative, I wouldn’t have had the wall.”

“There were many interpretations, but the message is in the eyes of the beholder,” adds Hardy Magerko, who took over Pittsburgh-based 84 Lumber from her father, now 94. “So, depending on what struggles and what you’re going through… it’s all in interpretation.”

The ad, which features imposing shots of a U.S. border wall, is 84 Lumber’s first Super Bowl commercial and was initially rejected by FOX for being “too controversial for TV.”

The 90-second TV spot broadcast on Sunday featured a Hispanic mother and daughter making the treacherous journey north to the U.S. It cut off before the ending and urged viewers to go online to watch the full story.

The online ad, which is over 5 minutes long, ends with the mother and daughter encountering a wall at the U.S. border (something that Trump has repeatedly promised to build) – then finding a door built with lumber from a contractor, which allows them to enter the country.

The tagline, at the end of the full commercial, reads: “The will to succeed is always welcome here.”

It had a polarizing effect on viewers. Some took to social media to congratulate 84 Lumber for the company’s support of human rights and progressive policies, while others saw it as encouraging illegal immigration into the U.S.

“Of course, you get social media backlash,” says Hardy Magerko. “But there was more positive than negative far and away.”

Some social media users even threatened to boycott the company.

And others, were confused (especially when their site crashed after the ad aired).

“At the core, this commercial is about individuals that truly are scared, whatever that might be, whatever their own journey might be,” says Hardy Magerko.

She goes on to say it was not her intent to use the commercial as a platform to make political noise.

Hardy Magerko prefaces her thoughts on the controversial border wall and her commercial, which received a variety of responses both positive and negative, by saying: “I have no right talking about immigration policy, no right, because I don’t know anything about it!”

Hardy Magerko, who says she “unequivocally” voted for President Trump, says that when she found out he was elected, she had “so much hope.”

“I thought ‘Thank God he has the guts to do what needs to be done,’ and that’s to make decisions,” she explains. “We need someone to make decisions and move forward. He will make mistakes as we all are, we are human.

Rob Schapiro, chief creative officer of 84 Lumber’s ad agency Brunner, echoes her reasoning for the creating this type of advertisement.

“The intention is about opportunity,” Schaprio, who filmed the spot in Mexico, tells PEOPLE. “We view it as a patriotic story. If you think of liberty’s torch as a beacon of light from the land of opportunity, that’s how we viewed that light coming through the door. Exactly the same as a beacon of light, we are a company of opportunity and a land of opportunity.

“It’s a very patriotic message. The flag that this young child creates, you see what that means to the mother and daughter. That’s the beacon of light we talk about.”

Hardy Magerko watched the controversial ad play on Super Bowl Sunday with a few close friends in New York, while Schapiro watched from Pittsburgh, where both companies are headquartered. The two had worked closely together since November on casting and filming.

“We wanted to shake things up and I think we did!” says Hardy Magerko, still giddy from the explosive social media response. “During market research, we found that people 40 and younger don’t know about , so I thought ‘Okay… let’s tie in what is going on in the world and, more importantly, with our beliefs and company ideals and .’ ”

She adds, “The message, and what people maybe don’t understand, is that we didn’t mean this with any malice, we didn’t mean this with any sharp tongue or sword. Sincerely. I don’t view the wall as a bad thing. This was a patriotic commercial.”

Instead, Hardy Magerko says the advertisement, at its core, was meant to attract new, young employees for her growing business and to drum up new customers while “stimulating” the housing market.

“I believe in youth and being contemporary,” she explains. “We need to surround ourselves with people who will continue to build America and build 84 Lumber, we’re looking for people that are naïve and willing to sacrifice and get into a company thinking, ‘Wow this is really cool!’

“There are no politics at 84!”

Hardy Magerko isn’t too worried about backlash from the immigration ad (her core customer base is made up of small business owners and contractors), even from those who interpreted it as a stab at Trump.

“I didn’t put much thought into whether we would lose business,” she admits.

“I would hope, being naïve as I am, I would hope they understand I’m not taking a personal stance here. It’s about hope, it’s being patriotic. It’s hope for the future, it’s not knowing but standing together strong for all positives.”

In an event for their mental health awareness campaign Heads Together, Prince William, Princess Kate and Prince Harry faced off in a relay race at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with runners training for the upcoming London Marathon, of which Heads Together is the official charity partner.

The three royals raced against each other in the first leg of the relay, egging each other on as the crowd counted down to the start of the race and showing off their well-documented competitive streaks.

“Oh my hamstring,” William joked at the start of the race, ABC News reported. But the teasing didn’t throw his younger brother or wife off their game; Harry won by a fraction of a second.

Runners at the event were raising funds for Heads Together, which works to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues and help find resources for those who are suffering. The runners explained their reasons for getting involved in a video the campaign released:

Simone Biles And Shaq Kick Off Super Bowl With An Epic Photo

Simone Biles had an early contender for the best photo of Super Bowl Sunday before the game even started.

The Olympic gymnast shared a snapshot with Shaq to Instagram ahead of the main event at NRG Stadium in Houston. In the pic, the 4-foot-9-inch gold medal winner stands next to the 7-foot-1-inch basketball star.

The two made quite the duo.

The Dirty Thirties: A History of the Dust Bowl

The Dirty Thirties: A History of the Dust Bowl

The Dust Bowl was the largest ecological disaster in United States history, coinciding with the nation’s worst economic crisis, the Great Depression of the 1930s. Massive dust storms, combined with nearly a decade of drought, wreaked havoc on parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Arkansas. The storms were a relentless threat to the environment and the health and welfare of those in their path. The effects of the dust storms were far-reaching, impacting not just the farmers and their families, but the state of California. Many who were forced off their land viewed the state as a mecca and it became the new home for millions of former Midwesterners. However, many families stayed in the Great Plains and reluctantly turned to the federal government for assistance to make ends meet. The government’s new role as a provider of economic relief and social aid was met with gratitude by some and anger by others. In this book, Brinkley will take you through a short history of the “Dirty Thirties.” HistoryCaps is an imprint of BookCaps Study Guides. With each book, a brief period of history is recapped. We publish a wide array of topics (from baseball and music to science and philosophy), so check our growing catalogue regularly to see our newest books.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About The Super Bowl, Even If You Watch Every Year

Although you watch it every year, what do you really know about the Super Bowl?

This Sunday, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks are facing off in Super Bowl XLIX. The Super Bowl has a long history of memorable moments, and, with Marshawn Lynch’s Skittles and the Patriots (maybe) deflated balls alone, even more memorable moments are certainly bound to happen this weekend.

But before everything goes down this time around, here are eight things you can learn about the game and share at your viewing party … even if your favorite part is actually the commercials.

1. Someone has snuck into over 30 Super Bowls including the very first championship.

461728956

Dion Rich has gate-crashed many, many big events including the Oscars and Olympics, but he has snuck into the Super Bowl the most. In a 1993 Los Angeles Times profile, Rich explained his motives, “It was my hobby. The guys at home expected me to be on the tube or in the papers every year. I couldn’t let them down. I made it on TV or in some publication in 21 of the first 22 Super Bowls.” In the photo above, you can see rich even hoisting Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry after they won Super Bowl XII.

Unfortunately, security knows his face these days, checkpoints have increased since 2001, and Rich is no longer able to crash the Super Bowl. According to NY Daily News, his last successful attempt was the New Orleans Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002. Even in the ’90s, Rich told the Los Angeles Times:

After so many years it gets to be a real job. People see me on the sidelines all the time and think it’s easy. It’s not easy, it takes a lot of conniving and ingenuity and contacts. Every year they made it tougher … It just wasn’t that much fun anymore.

Image: Confessions of the World’s Greatest Gate-Crasher

2. The first person to say, “I’m going to Disney World!” really didn’t want to do it at first.

71157527

USA Today’s For The Win caught up with former Giants quarterback Phil Simms in 2014 to talk about how this first Disney plug came together. Perhaps surprisingly, Simms didn’t have much interest in being a part of the campaign: “I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “I just thought that was wrong trying to do something like that.”

Simms was named MVP of Super Bowl XXI in 1987 and he remembered just being happy about winning the game when the cameras caught him to do the commercial. “Of course I’m smiling because we won, and the other reason is because I can’t believe I’m doing this,” Simms told For The Win.

For his role in the commercial, Simms was paid $ 50,000 and Disney did in fact send his family to Disney World.

In 2008, SF Gate profiled Mark Allan, the camera person who typically rushes on to the field to get the line from the Super Bowl winner, including the first one with Simms. Apparently the person in the commercial has to repeat the line a few times and says both Disney Land and World so the commercial can be targeted to each coast. While trying to capture the players, Simms basically just keeps saying, “Look in the lens.”

3. Joe Montana once calmed his team down before a Super Bowl-winning drive by pointing to the stands and joking, “Isn’t that John Candy?”

77620418

It was the 1989 Super Bowl and Joe Montana’s San Francisco 49ers were trailing the Cincinnati Bengals with time running out. According to legend, the 49ers offense were understandably nervous as they had to trek down almost the entire field to score. As Rolling Stone recounted, Montana apparently knew the right words to say to his team to calm their nerves. In a huddle, Montana began pointing to the crowd, saying, “There, in the stands, standing near the exit ramp … Isn’t that John Candy?”

It hasn’t been confirmed whether John Candy was truly in the stands during that game, but, in any case, Montana led the offense 92 yards down the field to score a winning touchdown with just 34 seconds left on the clock.

4. Both “Little Giants” and “Space Jam” were created out of successful Super Bowl commercials.

466857949

Ad people Jim Ferguson and Bob Shallcross created a McDonald’s advertisement for the 1992 Super Bowl about pee wee football that ended up catching legendary director Steven Spielberg’s attention. In a 1994 Baltimore Sun article, it was said that Ferguson came into the office one day and was simply told to give Spielberg a call. Ferguson thought it was a practical joke at first, but ended up getting Spielberg on the line. Spielberg apparently said, “I want that commercial made into a movie. I want my ‘Home Alone.'”

In 1994, Ferguson also told the Chicago Tribune, “Ninety seconds and Steven Spielberg changed our lives,” referring to himself and his partner Shallcross. Both of them ended up working with Spielberg to develop “Little Giants.”

The Nike and MCI commercial “Hare Jordan” was another Super Bowl commercial that led to a movie. At the end of “Hare Jordan,” Bugs Bunny tells Michael Jordan, “This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!” This obviously ended up being the case as the two were together again for the movie “Space Jam.”

5. During the first Super Bowl, NBC accidentally missed the taping of a kickoff and so the whole play was reset for the cameras.

77764299

During Super Bowl I, in 1967, both NBC and CBS had television rights to the game since NBC had a deal with the AFL and CBS the NFL. The game was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs and would have to be partially reset at one point due to a screw up by NBC.

As Rolling Stone recounted, the problem happened when the game was coming back from half time and NBC was still televising an interview with comedian Bob Hope. NBC failed to switch to the game fast enough so it was decided that the kickoff Green Bay had just completed would be entirely redone.

Green Bay would end up winning the game and as mentioned before, Dion Rich’s gate crashing ways enabled him to see it all go down.

6. A star player missed the Super Bowl due to a cocaine binge the night before.

347119

The previously mentioned 1989 Super Bowl, in which Joe Montana apparently spotted John Candy in the crowd, had another notable aspect to it. Montana might not have even gotten the chance to make a comeback though if the Cincinnati Bengals offense had had all their players to begin with.

Stanley Wilson was a running back for the Bengals who had already had two strikes from the league for drug use. He had made it through this preceding season without a problem, getting tested multiple times a week. This self control unfortunately only lasted until the night before the Super Bowl as Wilson succumbed to what Rolling Stone described as a “crack-cocaine binge.”

A Cincinnati Enquirer article from 1999 looked into the night surrounding Wilson’s decision and detailed how it almost didn’t even happen. Wilson,on his way to a team meeting with other players, stopped and said, “I forgot my playbook. I’ll meet you guys downstairs.” Wilson headed back to the room and didn’t return.

As this was Wilson’s third strike, he was given a lifetime ban from playing in the NFL.

7. The Baltimore Ravens ended up winning the Super Bowl after referring to the game as “Festivus” the whole season instead.

459284751

Festivus might be for the rest of us, but, in 2001, the “Seinfeld”-created holiday was especially for the Baltimore Ravens.

As the book Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us details, the superstitious head coach of the Ravens, Brian Billick, forbade his team from referencing the Super Bowl and playoffs throughout that season. Since logistically this became a problem, offensive lineman Edwin Multialo proposed calling the big game “Festivus Maximus” instead. The term stuck and then the Ravens went on to win “Festivus Maximus” in what was probably one of the biggest celebrations of the holiday yet.

Later in 2001, The Baltimore Sun even referred to the event as “Festivus Ravenous!”

8. The referees that officiate the Super Bowl also get rings.

52286160

These referee rings aren’t quite the same as the rings that players get, but they’re certainly still a point of pride. Mike Pereira of Fox Sports explained in a 2014 article:

The Super Bowl ring. The officials get Super Bowl rings just like the players do. They aren’t as big as the players’ rings, but they are still valuable pieces of jewelry. These rings mean the world to the officials and they wear them with such pride.

The American Profile also wrote about Super Bowl referees in 2012 and had retired NFL referee Jim Tunney show them his three Super Bowl rings. Referee Gerald Austin was quoted in that article as saying these refs aren’t given much advance notice they’ll be officiating the Super Bowl. “They called me about 11 days before the Super Bowl XXIV,” said Austin.

BONUS: According to legend, the Super Bowl got its name from the “Super Ball” toy.

52286160

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has had a super ball (shown in the photo above) on display to commemorate Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt’s apparent coining of the game name after his children’s toy. According to Henry D. Fetter of The Atlantic, when Fetter was asked how he originally came up with the name, he said, “My own feeling is that it probably registered in my head because my daughter Sharron and my son Lamar Jr. had a children’s toy called a Super Ball and I probably interchanged the phonetics of “bowl” and “ball.”

But Fetter doesn’t believe that Hunt actually came up with the name. Going by Hunt’s account, by the time he said “Super Bowl,” the term was already starting to take off in newspapers to refer to the previously unnamed championship game. Fetter believes that there is no clear person to point to as the origin and instead the name was sort of collectively decided.

For what it’s worth, according to the Chiefs media page, Hunt is also credited with coming up using Roman numerals in the name and putting Coach Vince Lombardi’s name on the trophy.

Oregon Fans Get Married In Rose Bowl Parking Lot Because They’re ‘Big Football Fans’

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Steven Twomey and Lisa DeFluri were set to have a beach wedding in Oregon in July. But when their beloved Oregon Ducks got a berth to the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl, they changed their plans.

Twomey and DeFluri were married Thursday at the tailgate party in Pasadena about 100 yards from the entrance to the stadium.

DeFluri said it just felt right. “We’re big football fans.”

The two 25-year-old teachers from Eugene were married by Twomey’s stepdad, who registered online to perform the ceremony. DeFluri’s parents couldn’t make it but they were able to watch via Skype.

There were plenty of Oregon fans stopping to congratulate the happy couple when they saw the green and gold arch and ‘just got hitched’ sign.

Life Is a Bowl of Cherries (So Eat It Up)

By Becky Karush for meQuilibrium

If you want a lesson in fleeting pleasures and the art of mindfulness, look no further than a bowl of summer fruit. You might think fall, with its rich harvest, is the season of food, but I beg to differ. Fall is the season of turning food into meals, putting up preserves, seasoning and salting and cooking, sure. But as far as the pleasures of fresh food go, I put my money on the moment when you pop a sun-warmed cherry tomato off the vine and into your mouth, or slice into a crisp, cool cucumber delivered from the farm to the corner market that morning, or wash the two pounds of blackberries you harvested at the pick-your-own farm (and don’t forget the half-pound or so you ate while picking).

Summer fruits and vegetables are the great, immediate, delicious — and fleeting — luxury of this season. It would be wonderful to bite into a fresh-off-the-tree juicy peach when February drags on. But seasonal food gives you a chance to savor the present moment, knowing full well it will end.

If there’s anything to learn from summer’s bounty, it’s to be mindful of the pleasures available to you right now. After all, you can’t save a bag of plump Rainier cherries for when you have more time, or when you’re less stressed, or when you feel like you’ve earned it, or whatever thoughts are keeping you from delight. The cherries will just mold.

This isn’t just about healthy eating (though it’s that, too), but about being in tune with what’s right in front of you. Because when you have a delicious, ripe plum in your hands, do you worry that it might go bad someday? No! You eat it right then and there. That’s what it means to be present.

The same is true for your life. Put off or neglect the sweet moments of your days, and you’ll lose them for good. But if you embrace present-moment enjoyment, you give yourself a better chance of feeling more nourished, more resilient, and more likely to notice and appreciated joys to come.

Here are four tips to help you savor summer’s bounty.

1. Tune in to your appetite.
When you find yourself reaching for food, ask yourself — are you actually hungry or just bored? Upset? Stressed? What are you hungry for? Do you really want what you’re about to eat? How will it make you feel? When you do eat something, pay attention to the sensation of eating it as well as how your body feels after eating. When you tune in to appetite, hunger, and the sensation of food, you become more fully aware of what is happening in you and around you with each breath. (Read more on mindful eating.)

2. Resist the bag.
As you tune in to your appetite, you’ll want to feed it well. That means when in doubt, opt for the thing that came out of the ground, rather than off an assembly line. You’re building a positive feedback loop here: Pay attention to your hunger, fill your belly with delicious food, and then look forward to feeling hungry again, because you’ll get to enjoy more good food. Fresh fruits and vegetables taste better, they just do — especially when you can reset your palette from the hyper-sugary, over-salted snacks to which we’ve become accustomed.

If you’re not sure where to find fresh fruits and veggies in your area, check out EatWellGuide.org, a free directory for farms, restaurants, markets, and grocery stores that sell fresh foods.

3. Let food rule.
Try to have at least one meal a day without distractions. (This isn’t easy if you have young children in the house, so you might shoot for a yummy snack without distractions). Turn off your devices, put down your book, stop whatever project you’ve got going and give your food your full attention. And really experience your food. What does it look like, smell like, taste like? What does it feel like to chew and swallow? Do any emotions or images come to mind?

4. Relish it!
You certainly don’t have to be overly regimented about this. It’s about really loving what you eat. Let the plum juice run down your chin. Shell sugar snap peas into your mouth. Nibble the broccoli while it’s still on the stem just to see what it tastes like. Eat watermelon right down to the rind.

Every blueberry or summer squash presents you with the opportunity to be present. All you have to do is bite.

Bowl Haircuts For Bowl Tickets Offer: Florida State And Auburn Students Make The Cut (VIDEO)

Bad haircut for a great game? No problem.

Dozens of Florida State and Auburn students took up ESPN’s “Bowl Haircuts For Bowl Tickets” offer for a chance at two free tickets for the schools’ BCS National Championship clash Jan. 6. The styles the students received ranged from the standard bowl cut to a more extreme “Friar Tuck.”

“So much for the job interview,” one participant snickered in the video above.

In the end just three won the tickets in a contest whose rules were admittedly “sketchy,” ESPN host Kenny Mayne said. The losers had to be happy putting aesthetic stresses on their tresses for the sheer fun of it.

Hey, they can still watch on TV and will now have more time to visit a good barber.
