Discussing Brexit, Feminism and Grace at Catherine Quin’s Literary Salon

BOOK CLUB: Catherine Quin, the London-based designer known for her minimalist creations, has carved a path of her own, removed from the never-ending fashion cycle.
Her ultimate mission, she said, is to connect with her customers and to encourage them to “buy less, but better.”
Earlier this week she gathered a group of the women who most inspire her, including political activist Gina Miller, chef Jemima Jones, footwear designer Lily Hanbury and founder of Women for Women charity Brita Fernandez Schmidt, at the vintage book library on the top floor of Maison Assouline in London.
The women, who gathered for tea and literary readings, also featured in Quin’s latest campaign and modeled her new collection, Women of Grace. The collection is filled with elegant shirtdresses, fuss-free jumpsuits and oversized tailoring in the designer’s signature neutral palette.
“I wanted to celebrate qualities that aren’t normally brought to the fore nowadays. This year there has been a lot of toxicity in politics and I’ve really been inspired by women who stood up for what they believe in, and who were really dignified in how they dealt with all the criticism and the furor. It just made me think how grace is not talked about so much

London Sunday Times Publishes Rich List, With Brexit a Big Wealth Factor

THE WEALTH DIARIES: The 2017 Sunday Times of London Rich List is out, ranking British — and international — billionaires and millionaires whose wealth reflects the shape-shifting world economy over the past 12 months.
The 29th annual edition of the list includes Britain’s 1,000 richest people, and the compilers argue that many of the 134 billionaires were able to amass even more wealth from the “post-Brexit boom” last year, which fueled the stock market and pushed down the value of the pound. New money, they said, came mainly from the city of London, property and manufacturing.
“While many of us worried about the outcome of the EU referendum, many of Britain’s richest people just kept calm and carried on making billions,” said Robert Watts, who compiled the list.
A sidebar to the main story is the International Rich List, which is even more interesting than the British one. At number one is the Walton family, owners of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., whose net worth is estimated to be 100.6 billion pounds, or $ 136.82 billion; at number four is Inditex owner Amancio Ortega, with a fortune of 63.5 billion pounds, or $ 86.36 billion; while at number 12, there’s Bernard Arnault, whose net worth is calculated to be 35.2

U.K. Culture Minister Responds to Brexit Design Manifesto

LOOKING AHEAD: Matt Hancock, the U.K.’s culture minister, issued a statement highlighting the importance of finding ways to help the country’s design sectors continue to flourish after Brexit.
Hancock, who is responsible for digital and cultural policy, added that he plans to work closely with the industry as the government begins to conduct Brexit negotiations.
“The U.K.’s architecture and design are vitally important to our future as an outward-looking nation. It is a dynamic sector that significantly enhances our economy and global reputation,” he added.
Hancock’s comments follow the presentation of the Brexit Design Manifesto earlier this month, an initiative created in response to the Brexit vote, by architectural and design magazine Dezeen. The aim of the initiative, spearheaded by Dezeen’s editor in chief Marcus Fairs, is to develop a close relationship between industry representatives and the ministry and to highlight the sector’s ever-growing contribution to the economy.
Among the manifesto’s key aims is to establish an ongoing dialogue with government officials and discuss key topics, which are likely to be affected by the U.K.’s exit from the European Union. These include the importance of world-class education and the need to access international intellectual property regimes.
