Fifth Harmony’s Ally Brooke Is Ready to ‘Unleash’ Herself with Solo Music: ‘For So Long, I Was in This Box’

Former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke is “Miss Movin On.”

The 25-year-old opened up exclusively to PEOPLE recently about her newest venture as a solo artist after the pop group announced an indefinite hiatus in May. First on Brooke’s list? She’s ready to “unleash Ally.”

“For so long I was in this box and now I’m out of it,” she says. “I’m able to be who I want to be.”

“Even my mom got emotional the other day. She’s like, ‘Ally, you are you again,’” she adds. “And it’s beautiful. It really is.”

Brooke recently signed a solo deal with Atlantic Records’ Latium Entertainment, where she says she is receiving all the support she has ever wanted to make her own music.

“I love being able to have a say in everything that I do,” the singer says. “They’re so open and also very smart and meticulous, and they pay attention to the details which is something that I’m just such a fan of.”

As for the type of work that fans can expect from her, Brooke says that the music “will be different than Fifth Harmony” but will still feature a young vibe that set the girl group apart from other artists.

“It’ll definitely have some flavor and flair, and I’ll be able to really be a different Ally than I was in Fifth Harmony,” she says.

There is no date set for the release of her new music, but Brooke is excited “about a few records.”

“We’re kind of just going with the flow, but you should definitely stay tuned. Sometime between now and 2022,” she says, laughing. “AB1 is on its way.”

The Latina artist is also excited to pursue Latin-influenced music, and “definitely has plans” to sing in Spanish. In fact, her new label is known for Latin artists like Play-n-Skillz and Messiah, who is featured on the Spanish remix of Cardi B’s smash hit “Bodak Yellow.”

Cardi B is on the list of people Brooke would love to work with, along with Justin Timberlake and Jennifer Lopez, who has been one of her inspirations since she was young.

“She’s such an outstanding performer,” she says. “She’s Latina and she’s paved the way for so many people. For me to even exist, it’s because of her, which is unreal.”

Brooke has been working on a couple songs with songwriters and producers like Yei Gonzalez, who produced “Dinero” by Jennifer Lopez ft. DJ Khaled and Cardi B, Grammy winner James Fauntleroy from 1500 or Nothin’ and Diane Warren, who has had nine No. 1 songs on the Hot 100.

“I actually had a dream list of writers to work with and was on there,” the “Perfect” singer says. “I found the list the other day and I scratched her name off which is really such a moment for me. It is very special.”

Recently, Brooke attended the Teen Choice Awards, where she was nominated for Choice Electronic/Dance Song and met up with former Fifth Harmony singer Normani. Aside from interacting through social media, she says she and the girls haven’t seen each other since their last show in May.

“Everyone’s doing their own thing so we haven’t really talked to each other,” she says. “I think everyone’s just in their own lane, in their own element.”

Along with her solo ventures in music, Brooke has been an avid representative of the ASPCA. She recently began fostering two kittens named Ladybelle and Minnie and plans to adopt them soon.

“We need to be their voices. They don’t have voices and we need to protect them,” she says. “They’re pure beings and we just need to take care of them.”

Brooke is content with where her life is today and says she is happy to have “the record label of my dreams.”

“I have a team who really believes in me and fights for me and who wants to see my visions come alive,” she says. “It feels like nothing I could ever describe, but I’m just thankful and I feel so blessed.”

Fifth Harmony’s Ally Brooke Posts Inspiring Message Before She Takes the VMA Stage: ‘Dreams Do Come True!’

Ahead of the highly anticipated Fifth Harmony appearance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Ally Brooke shared an inspiring post on Instagram about her career and living her dream.

The 24-year-old singer — who has been performing since the age of 9 — shared a tweet she posted in 2012 about the VMAs being a source of inspiration for the singer. “Watching the VMAs just inspires & motivates me even more 🙂 #dreamer #believer #oneday,” Brooke wrote back in the day.

“On September 6, 2012, I tweeted this….today, August 27, 2017 I will be taking the VMA stage with my girls….can’t describe my emotion,” Brooke wrote. “It’s hard for me to not breakdown in tears as I read this….thank you to GOD for this opportunity….it’s something I’ve dreamed of for so long….my cup of joy & gratitude is overflowing….I want to encourage everyone out there to KEEP DREAMING.

“Work hard. Follow your heart! Dreams do come true! Always believe. I am taking every millisecond in today. And will leave my heart on that stage tonight, more than I ever have 💛.”

Brooke’s career launched after the San Antonio native auditioned for TV’s The X Factor in 2012. It was there that she landed a spot on what would eventually become Fifth Harmony. Although 5H didn’t win the televised competition, the group went on to have success of their own.

In May, Brooke opened up to PEOPLE Chica about 5H as well as her “biggest inspiration” — the late Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla.

“Selena is my angel,” Brooke said. “She is my biggest inspiration. Being from San Antonio, Texas, I really feel that connection to her because she had a lot of performances and a lot of her most iconic performances in San Antonio. Back in my hometown, we love her. We all as a community celebrate her and adore her. We keep her memory alive.”

PEOPLE Now spoke with the foursome —  Lauren Jauregui, Brooke, Dinah Jane and Normani Kordei — backstage during their Thursday rehearsals for the VMAs, where they will perform their new hit single “Down.”

“We’re extremely excited,” said Jauregui. “This is definitely one of the biggest moments of our careers — something we’ve worked so hard for to get to a place where people would want us on the stage, so we’re excited as heck for it.”

The group released their third and self-titled studio album — their first without former fifth member Camila Cabello — on Friday.

Brooke Adams & Tony Shalhoub in Happy Days, at the Flea Theater

2015-07-06-1436147591-2268492-HappyDays1_JoanMarcus.jpg

I always like going to the Flea Theater, since they bring to fruition off beat, experimental and genius pieces such as Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, directed by Andrei Belgrader and playing now to packed audiences with Brooke Adams and Tony Shalhoub. An oddly timeless work written in 1960; to the naked eye it seems like it is an aged piece of cheese, but only if you have never read a book or are part of the generation that needs everything spelled out and explained in 60 seconds, as patience is short these days and Becket requires mature thinking, tempered with intellectual curiosity. It requires a willingness to see that whether the rituals in life move fast or slow, we all most likely, find ourselves in a routine for better or worse. And though the main character Winnie, is a throwback to Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker) days of yore, is she really that far away in her symbolic matrix from contemporary life?

Even if society has changed drastically in 55 years, we are human and do get older and we do begin to bury ourselves in sand, piling up the emblematic experience of a lifetime around us, until we are gone and buried. The metaphor is still as fresh as ever, though the conditions have changed and even then, if one searches their mind they will have an “Aha” moment of truth, recognizing familiar faces in their lives, even if it’s at the next table while dining at the Starbucks.

Winnie is a woman somewhere in her 50s, trying very hard to stay sane, alive and happy, as she is buried in earth so packed, she cannot or will not move, while her husband Willie moves in and out of day-light from his hole somewhere below the mound, where she presides. She will often call out to him, asking for his love and to affirm her life. He is wordless and with his head turned mostly away from the audience and Winnie, he spends most of his time reading an old paper, looking at porn, and grunting out a few things here and there of little consequence.

Ms. Adams makes a compelling Winnie, with a look of an aged beauty who might have been in a pageant in her youth. She refuses to be unhappy, even though you know by the strain of her smile that she is staving off the inevitability of death and is quite lonely to the very bottom of her soul.

The monumental task of carrying a full two hours of monologue is herculean, but Ms. Adams did it in a smooth and meticulous way; capturing Winnie’s dilemma of impending death, loneliness, and the steady nothingness that her relationship with her husband, who seems to be disappearing at will and with him her romantic memories. Ms. Adams has a distinctive quality of being uncommonness, which sometimes gets in the way of Winnie’s ordinary life history. We cannot help but notice her sparkle, she is not a warn piece of jewelry that has been dulled by time or become eccentric from a ritualized life forced into a mound of earth, maybe Ms. Adams is too charming. That hint of frustration, of utter eccentricity brought about by monotony fails to shine through, which seems to me missing from the steadiness of her performance.

Scarcely existent Willie, Mr. Shalhoub used his brief words wisely and was no less charming than he is in everything he does. However, I have to say, to be Willie successfully, one must be slightly more than catatonic and slightly less than dead. His final moment with his wife requires something deeper than the surprise vertical entrance of Willie wearing fancy attire. It requires mercy, love and something as unseemly as maybe a little hatred.
