Marcia Patmos Opens Brooklyn Store for M.Patmos With Focus on Community

Six years after officially launching her M.Patmos brand, Marcia Patmos has opened her first store in Brooklyn.
Located at 380 Atlantic Avenue, the lofty space offers her designs and a range of other products, including art books, records, organic beauty products and home decor. Jewelry from local designers, sneakers from Alumnae upcycled styles from the Los Angeles-based VisionQuest, cashmere blankets and throws from Saved and zero-waste pillows from Oliver Yaphe are some of the pick-up items for sales. Photographer Sarah Bird’s “Trees” exhibition is on view, too.
Patmos said of the opening: “I thought it was a good time, because people are interested in independent designers. There are two things happening. There’s the Amazon world and there’s also people, who like to go into a store to touch things, speak to a person and find special things that you don’t find on Amazon, etc.”
To design the space, Patmos used as many recycled goods as she could, “stalking” The Big Reuse in Gowanus for salvaged goods like mirrors, shelves and other finds. With large bay windows, old wood floors and tin ceilings, the designer wanted the interior to have an industrial feel. She made the clothing racks from plumbing pipes. To keep things

Chrissy Teigen, John Legend Cheer Brooklyn Decker at Finery’s L.A. Launch

“We realized that women were spending more on their clothing than their education, and yet there is so much that is hanging in their closets that they don’t use,” said Whitney Casey by way of explaining why she and Brooklyn Decker decided to create Finery, the virtual wardrobe and styling app they launched in March 2017.
Just over a year later, the former CNN journalist and the model-actress celebrated with a launch party at the Microsoft Lounge in Culver City, Calif. While the company is based in New York, where both divide their time with Austin, Tex., Decker has a host of friends in Los Angeles, such as Chrissy Teigen, John Legend and Jen Atkin, all of whom came to cheer her on, as did New Yorker Emmy Rossum (both she and Decker are filming television shows in L.A. this summer).

Casey shared the stat that women only wear 20 percent of what’s in their wardrobes because “you really can only inventory that much in your busy life. How are you also supposed to remember everything that you own? You have your three go-to outfits and that propagates not wearing the rest of

Supreme Confirms Brooklyn Store

NEW YORK — Supreme has landed in Brooklyn.
After months of speculation, the company has confirmed that it will open a store on Thursday at 152 Grand Street in Williamsburg.
The cavernous space is sparse, much like Supreme’s other shops, but features skylights and a bowl for skating. This is the brand’s second New York store.
Resellers say rumors of a Brooklyn store have been percolating for a few years because of the crowds Supreme draws at its SoHo store on Thursdays when new product drops, but talks started to dissipate once the company created a drop system that alleviated those crowds on Lafayette Street. Customers now meet in a park the Monday before Thursday drops and put their names on a list. They then receive a number that dictates when they can enter the flagship, eliminating the need for a line.
In July, Louis Vuitton had to cancel its Supreme pop-up on Bond Street because Manhattan’s Community Board No. 2 unanimously denied the proposal, citing Supreme’s tendency to violate New York permit requirements and its lack of a plan to manage the crowds on a quiet, residential street. The collection was never released in New York.

Calvin Klein and Warhol: The Brooklyn Artists Who Got the Job Done

The postmodernist prints blanketing Raf Simons’ second offering for Calvin Klein Collection are the work of a New York City screen-printing collective, WWD has learned.
Lqqk  Studio — the Brooklyn-based screen printing studio and brand profiled by WWD last week — took up residence on the 14th floor of the brand’s headquarters, serving an in-house printing operation for the weeks leading up to the label’s show.
Lqqk founder Alex Dondero, along with a staff of five printers, created experimental treatments and screens for the house’s spring collection.

Lqqk Studio’s Brooklyn headquarters.

Simons’ collection required extensive screen-printing development, logistics and labor. For the task, Lqqk created 70 screens using licensed Warhol prints — sometimes printing garments with up to five layers of color. The team printed on surfaces including leather, canvas, nylon, silk, wool and PVC — adjusting its ink formulas to suit each fabric.
Dondero said of the project: “It was all licensed Warhol prints — that is the inspiration, so staying true to that was really important. The liberties I was given were rooted in technique. It was about how to print something and make sure it’s not too clinical, but not too messy. Being gestural without going too far.”
“It’s kind of just knowing

Supreme Said To Be Opening Brooklyn Store

Supreme is said to be opening its second New York location in Brooklyn.
According to the @supreme__hustle Instagram account, which is dedicated to all things Supreme, the streetwear brand will open a store in Williamsburg and a real estate source said Supreme had been eyeing a 3,000-square-foot space on Grand Street.
Resellers say rumors of a Brooklyn store have been percolating for a couple years because of the crowds Supreme draws at its SoHo store on Thursdays when new product drops. In 2014 the New York Police Department temporarily shut down the location due to safety concerns surrounding the release of the Supreme Nike Air Foamposite sneakers. The NYPD recently closed Palace, a streetwear brand based in London, due to unruly customers during its store opening.
Andre Arias, who resells Supreme, said talks of a Brooklyn store started to dissipate once the company created a new drop system that alleviated crowds on Lafayette Street. Arias said customers now meet in a park the Monday before Thursday drops and put their names on a list. They then receive a number that dictates when they can enter the flagship, thus eliminating the need for a line.

Rodd & Gunn to Open Store in Brooklyn

Rodd & Gunn, a New Zealand-based men’s wear brand, will open its second U.S. store in New York City in March.
The 3,200-square-foot store at 81 Front Street in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn joins a flagship that opened in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Calif., in October.
Rodd & Gunn operates 85 stores in New Zealand and Australia, but entered the American market as a wholesaler.
Asked why the brand chose Brooklyn instead of Manhattan for its East Coast debut, Mike Beagley, chief executive officer, said, “We weren’t really looking at opening on the East Coast, but this opportunity came up and we thought it was a great way of commencing in New York quickly. It is an amazing building in an iconic location that we believe is an emerging retail and lifestyle area of Brooklyn – incredibly high average household income and literally a stone’s throw from Wall Street.”
He said the California store has performed “exceptionally well and we are really happy in how the Newport Beach community has embraced us. We are trading well above plan and selling all of our categories from hand-made in New Zealand luggage to outerwear and footwear.”
Beagley said the plan calls for opening eight to 10

How A Hijab-Friendly Brooklyn Salon Became A Space For Women’s Empowerment

Muslim cosmetologist Huda Quhshi used to lug her supplies around New York City, cutting and coloring women’s hair over sinks in crowded apartments.

But Quhshi’s days of itinerant hairstyling are over. Last month, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bay Ridge, the 37-year-old realized her lifelong dream of opening a salon that caters entirely to women. Her salon, Le’Jemalik, has become a kind of sanctuary for women who want to let their hair down in a ladies-only space.

“It’s a place where you can come and feel relaxed, and just have a beautiful experience without worrying that a man is going to walk in,” Quhshi told The Huffington Post.

Le’Jemalik, which means “for your beauty” in Arabic, offers a full range of services, from hairstyling to nails, waxing and makeup. It even sells wedding dresses and offers regular seminars for beauty professionals looking to enhance their skills.

The salon hosted its grand opening on Jan. 29, with hundreds of visitors stopping by to glimpse the space, Quhshi said. It had already attracted a fair amount of media attention, not only as a business run by and for women but as a place where Muslim women, in particular, can feel safe and welcome.

Not all Muslim women cover their hair or wear hijabs. But those who do maintain a commitment to covering in front of men to whom they aren’t related. It’s a tradition upheld by some Orthodox Jewish women, as well.

Some salons have dividers or rooms in the back to accommodate women with these religious requirements. But Quhshi said she wasn’t aware of any other salons in New York City where the entire space is a men-free zone.

Men are allowed in the front waiting area of Le’Jemalik, but the actual service area lies behind a double door that only women may pass through.

Quhshi said the salon has attracted many Muslim and Jewish clients since it opened. But she emphasized that “this space is for all women.”

“I’ve had women from other faiths tell me that they’re so excited about this space, even though they’re not Muslim,” she said. “They’re happy to be able to support a woman-run business and come here just because they want to feel comfortable.”

As a hijab-wearing Muslim woman of Yemeni descent, Quhshi said she hopes she can be an inspiration to other women who may have to overcome bias to achieve their goals.

“I want to help other girls follow their dreams,” she said. “I’m definitely happy to empower other women and make other women feel like I’ve opened doors for them.”

Pintrill Opens Brooklyn Store

Jordan Roschwalb’s enthusiasm for pins is infectious.
“I wanted to be able to give pin collectors a space to congregate just like sneaker collectors go to Stadium Goods,” said Roschwalb when asked about Pintrill’s first brick-and-mortar store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “This will be a flagship where people from all over can come and experience this.”
Roschwalb cofounded Pintrill in 2014 along with Doni Gitlin and Andrew Yung. Over the past two years the brand has grown rapidly with its clever, of-the-moment pins, which retail from $ 12 to $ 20 and are released on a weekly basis.
The Pintrill flagship, which opens this Saturday at 231 Grand Street, sells Pintrill’s vast collection of pins. They are displayed on clear pegs to give the appearance that they are floating. The 625-square-foot space, which will also serve as Pintrill’s headquarters, is stocked with vintage pins Roschwalb sources from all over the word — they are featured on rotating trays in a glass box — and supplementary items to display pins such as vintage corkboards, trays and Pintrill’s line of hats.
Different displays in the shop, which is sprinkled with vintage toy viewfinders, will be dedicated to new weekly releases, in-store exclusives and a board behind the cash register

Brooklyn Beckham’s New Girlfriend, Sonia Ben Ammar, Is a Street Style Star In-The-Making

Brooklyn Beckham has a new girlfriend, and we predict she’ll be a major street style star in no time. Paris-based model Sonia Ben Ammar is stunning, with classic French girl style she displays in full via Instagram. We know the look is about casual basics, plenty of flats, and outfits that have perfect little details you only notice when giving them a thorough once-over, and it’s pretty much check, check, check for the lovely.

Sonia’s style holds true to the sartorial standard: she’s got a super collection of perfect skinny jeans and cozy sweaters that are basic enough, but manage to look effortless when styled together just so. Her accessory game mixes some jealousy-inducing bags with the quirky pieces any 16-year-old girl would like (four of her most recently posted pics show one of those stretchy, thin plastic chokers that first emerged in the ’90s).

MORE: 10 Key Style Differences Between French and American Women

Stat-wise, she’s signed with Next Management and has also done some acting and singing. Her and Brooklyn’s relationship supposedly started when their families were vacationing at the same time in the Maldives, and they’ve moved on from “chaperoned” Paris trips to some Hollywood concert canoodling. For the latter she wore a ring-neck tee and carried a chain-strap orange bag. So cool.

The two-day Afropunk Festival — “a weekend of live music, vibrant art and good vibes” — has been known to bring out some of the most expressive and original street style in Brooklyn. The 11th annual festival, held this past Saturday and Sunday in Fort Greene’s Commodore Barry Park, was no exception, offering up plenty of eclectic, electric style. As Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Danny Brown, SZA and other artists performed, festivalgoers competed for sartorial attention with vibrantly hued head wraps and dashikis, bold eyewear, chunky jewelry and imaginatively colored hair. It was a celebration of both individuality and community — cool confidence on a hot summer weekend.

Kith Opens Redesigned Brooklyn Store

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Talk about being meticulous.
Ronnie Fieg considered every detail in the redesign of Kith’s Brooklyn location on Flatbush Avenue, which opened Monday.
The store, which was designed in collaboration with architecture firm Snarkitecture, is full of Instagram bait for Fieg’s sneaker-obsessed following.
“I’m invested in spaces as much as I’m invested in product,” said Fieg. “Building an experience is as important as building product because experiences stay in the memory bank.”
When shoppers enter the store, they are greeted by a Kith logo on a white marble herringbone floor, which is perfectly positioned for the brand’s snap-happy customers to shoot from above alongside the sneakers they’re wearing. How To Meditate: Tips From Lama Surya Das, The ‘Buddha From Brooklyn’

(RNS) Lama Surya Das, the “Buddha from Brooklyn,” is one of the handful of Westerners who have been teaching meditation for decades. And yet, he says we’re doing it wrong.

“So many people seem to be moving narcissistically — conditioned by our culture, doubtless — into self-centered happiness-seeking and quietism, not to mention the use of mindfulness for mere effectiveness,” he said. True meditation, he said, generates wisdom and compassion, which may be very disquieting, at least in the short term.

Born Jeffrey Miller, Surya Das has had a spiritual journey that is remarkable in its breadth. He was given the name “Surya Das” by the Indian guru Neem Karoli Baba, made famous by Ram Dass more than 40 years ago. But Surya Das shifted gears in the early 1970s to Tibetan Buddhism, subsequently completing two three-year silent meditation retreats and becoming one of the first Westerners to be authorized as a Tibetan lama.

At the time, meditation was still considered pretty weird: foreign, exotic, hippie-ish. Now it’s everywhere. Meditation — especially mindfulness, which trains the mind to observe nonjudgmentally and attentively — has gone mainstream. In secular forms, it’s now widespread in health care, education, the corporate world, even the military. Each year, 1 million Americans take up the practice for the first time.

Surya Das is not entirely happy about that. “Mindful divorce, mindful parenting, mindful TV,” he complained. “Why not mindful sniping, poaching, or mindful waiting to find the opportunity to take advantage of and exploit someone when there’s a chink in their armor?”

Moreover, he said, because of the way meditation is taught, many people think they can’t do it. “’Quiet your mind’ or ‘calm and clear your mind’ are instructions I hear way too much. Some teachers actually encourage people to try to stop thinking, when in fact meditative awareness means being mindful of thoughts and feelings, not simply trying to reduce, alter or white them out and achieve some kind of oblivion.”

What’s missing? In his new book, “Make Me One With Everything” (the answer to a well-worn Buddhist joke: “What did the Zen monk say to the hot dog vendor?”), Surya Das argues for a return to the original purpose of Buddhist meditation: not relaxation, but liberation. The goal, he said, is “to genuinely learn how to gain direct access to Oneness, wholeness, completeness, integration with all the parts of themselves and life.”

“All the parts” is a crucial ingredient. In “Make Me One,” he proposes what he calls “co-meditation” — not trying to find a quiet “moment of Zen” apart from the messy, noisy world of work, family and children, but inviting all of the noise into meditation. That is indeed unorthodox in a contemporary context. But it is also part of the ancient Tibetan tradition known as Lojong, which often features elaborate visualizations — not quieting down and following the breath. Indeed, many of the book’s unusual meditation practices — sky-gazing, gardening, meditation for couples, and wild neologisms including Presencing, Convergitation and Momitation — are based on Surya Das’ years of studying and translating esoteric Tibetan teaching tales.

“It’s the same transformative and liberating essence, yet I think it’s pretty new for almost everyone today,” he said. “The anti-intellectual meditators, thought-swatters and imagination-suppressors have long ruled meditation-oriented circles in the West. But authentic meditative practices can enhance and even unleash the creativity and imagination.”

One benefit of these practices is that you don’t have to quiet the mind to do them. “It’s helpful for people who think they can’t meditate because they can’t sit still and think less. That ain’t the point.”

Still, bringing more noise into one’s meditation practice is diametrically opposed to the popular conception of meditation as calming and quieting. Surya Das calls that “the old New Age, self-growth, self-development, self-improvement emphasis — trying to use meditation to get away from it all. We need to erode the Grand Canyon-like gulf we see today between self and other, us and them, inner and outer, and even body and mind, body and soul, heaven and hell, liking and disliking, to realize the great equanimity of what is called in Tibetan Buddhism One Taste, and what others call unity vision, oneness, third-eye vision and the like.”

You may have already noticed that Surya Das speaks in long, often hilarious sentences, filled with puns and jokes. This rhetorical style is of a piece with his conceptual point — that awakening isn’t some calm, blissed-out state but is being at home with every state of mind, including the rapid-fire speech of a born-and-bred New Yorker.

For example, here’s how he summarizes the key teaching of the book, complete with 13 adjectives, 10 nouns and 11 verbs: “Can I say that this book presents, elucidates, rationalizes and instructs, in the extraordinary American-Buddhism’s fresh and newly minted, jargon-free, straight talkin’, practical and flexible, adaptable, personal and integratable, nonsectarian organic ways for a whole new way of meditating, with tips and pointers to find your own way and authentic practice style, thus avoiding many, if not most, of the obstacles and hindrances, doubts and distractions practitioners so often face and stumble upon?”

Sure you can.

There’s a refreshing honesty in this iconoclastic approach. Whatever awakening is, surely it has something to do with authenticity. And for some of us, authenticity is fast-talking, free-associating and full of sound and fury.

Or as Surya Das himself put it, “It can become obnoxious, I know, but I’m a folksy, campy, backyard bodhisattva-from-Brooklyn kinda guy, what can I say?”

Brooklyn Decker’s Maternity Style Is Off to a Strong Start

Brooklyn Decker and hubby Andy Roddick shared the exciting news earlier this week that they’re expanding their family. Decker’s already had a few red carpet appearances since then, meaning an early chance to examine her adorable maternity style.

brooklyn-decker-blue-dress-pregnant-andy-roddick-foundation
To celebrate Roddick’s foundation, she chose a midnight blue silk dress that only flared out under her belly. Since it’s early on in her pregnancy, her stomach is still super tiny, but the decision to rock something formfitting is a pretty good indication that throughout the next nine months she won’t be shy about showing off her new curves.

Last weekend she was at the I Heart Radio country festival in a striped maxi, proving that just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you should be relegated to a wardrobe full of neutrals.

So this happened… #the3ofus

10 Brooklyn Jewelry Designers with Their Own Shops

2014-10-22-JewelryDesigners.png

Brooklyn jewelry designers have emerged over the past decade or so with a distinct philosophy, fusing the concepts of high-end luxury with low-key presentation. They’ve also shown a gutsy independent streak, which may go a long way in explaining why so many of them also run their own shops. Their retail spaces become extensions of their design aesthetics and ideal environments for people to enjoy their latest works. Many of these shops double as studios, allowing visitors to see firsthand how the pieces on display come into being.

Brooklyn Decker On Why She ‘Wasn’t A Good Model’

Brooklyn Decker’s happy to have made the transition from Sports Illustrated cover girl to “Friends With Better Lives” actress.

“Acting is much more gratifying than modeling,” she told HuffPost Live’s Marc Lamont Hill in an interview to promote the new CBS sitcom.

“But I wasn’t a good model,” she added.

“I know that’s so crazy and people want to hurt me when I say that. But really, when I was modeling, I never walked a runway,” she explained. “I got fired from jobs all the time. Sports Illustrated was really the only client that loved me.”

26-year-old Decker has been featured in spreads for Teen Vogue, Glamour and Cosmo. Still, she emphasized her that she’d be sticking to acting in the future.

“I was just never any good at it, so, for me, acting just feels right,” Decker concluded.
