Boy with Cancer Who Took Picture With MLB Star Reunites With Him 13 Years Later as a Dodger

When Devin Smeltzer was just 9 years old, the young Philadelphia Phillies fan found himself frequently feeling the urge to go to the bathroom. Doctors would soon find a grapefruit-sized tumor pressing against his bladder, and he was diagnosed with cancer just a month before his 10th birthday.

Smeltzer, who started playing baseball when he was just 4 years old, found a bit of happiness while going through treatment when he was able to take to the field. The game of baseball gave Smeltzer a feeling of normalcy as going to crowded places like school and church were taken away because of his compromised immune system, he told Spectrum Sportsnet.

Smeltzer got his chance to mingle with major league players in 2006 when he visited Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, the home of his favorite MLB team. It was there that Smeltzer—who, at that point, had lost his hair due to chemotherapy and radiation treatment for his pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma—was able to spend time with two of the Phillies’ players, pitcher Cole Hamels, and second-baseman, Chase Utley. A picture was taken of Utley signing his autograph on a Phillies hat for an eager Smeltzer, who was then a patient at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

RELATEDWWE Vet David Otunga Helps His Niece, 24, Secure a Heart Transplant: We Are ‘Overjoyed’

“The picture of me and Chase has been in the living room for a long time,” Smeltzer, 22, told the news outlet. “When I go back home, it’s always very humbling to see that picture because of where I’m at today. It’s crazy to believe that I was going through such a hard time at such a young age, and how far I’ve grown.”

In the years since, Smeltzer has maintained his love of baseball, and continued playing the game when he entered college. In 2016, he was selected in the fifth round of the MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his cancer is now in remission, according to the LA Daily News. A year before Smeltzer’s selection in the draft, Chase Utley was traded from the Phillies to the Dodgers, where he has played ever since.

Smeltzer has since been a pitcher in the Dodgers’ farm system in the minor leagues, and during spring training this year, the team brought him into the clubhouse where manager Dave Roberts had the picture of Smeltzer and Utley in hand.

After telling the team Smeltzer’s unlikely story, Utley and the pitching prospect had a chance to reunite, more than a decade after taking their picture together in Philadelphia.

“I was able to play through it,” Smeltzer said to Utley in the Dodgers clubhouse. “I just wanted to thank you for everything you did. It means a lot.”

Smeltzer is now leading a campaign to raise funds for Katie’s Krusaders, an organization that provides financial and personal support for kids with cancer or other childhood diseases. He hopes to raise money for every strikeout he throws this season, so he can help other children who are in the same position he once was.

“It’s a pretty special and unique story with Devin,” Utley told Sportsnet of Smeltzer. “I can’t even imagine what he was going through, what his parents were going through… Hopefully, at some point, he’ll be pitching at Dodger Stadium.”

Lottery Winner with Cancer Dies Three Weeks After Finally Being Able to Afford Doctor

A winning lottery ticket worth a million dollars offered hope to one New York man, but the life-changing event would be short-lived as he lost his life to stage 4 cancer just three weeks later.

Donald Savastano, a self-employed carpenter living in upstate New York, struck it rich when he was driving home from work in early January and stopped at a convenience to purchase lottery tickets. The 51-year-old walked in and bought a Merry Millionaire ticket, and scratched it while on his way back to the car—revealing he had hit the $ 1 million grand prize.

“I couldn’t believe it!” Savastano told the New York Lottery in an announcement of his prize. “I brought it back in and scanned it under the ticket checker and knew it was a winner.”

Savastano decided to take the one-time lump sum payment, totaling $ 661,800 after withholdings. The winnings, he said, would allow him to build for the years to come.

RELATED: 20-Year-Old Wins $ 451 Million Mega Millions Grand Prize, Hopes to ‘Do Good For Humanity’

“Being a self-employed carpenter, I didn’t really have a plan for retirement,” he said. “The money will help with that. I don’t have any other extravagant plans. I’ll buy a new truck, pay off some debt and invest for the future.”

One of those plans was finally going to the doctor for a check-up because he hadn’t been feeling well. But the visit resulted in terrifying news: Savastano had stage 4 metastatic cancer.

Danielle Scott, an employee at the store where the ticket was purchased, told ABC 7 that Savastano didn’t have insurance.

“He had a friend come and talk to me,” told ABC 7. “They told me that he was very sick and that he had brain and lung cancer and that he was in the hospital and they didn’t think he was gonna make it.”

Savastano died from the disease on January 26, just 23 days after purchasing his ticket.

“I was hoping that the money was maybe going to save his life,” Scott told the news station.

An obituary for Savastano he learned carpentry from his father as a child growing up on Long Island.

“He was known for his high-quality work and perfectionism,” the obituary reads. “He always tried to reach out and help those he could by teaching them ‘the right way to do things.’ “

Savastano lived with his girlfriend of 12 years, Julie Wheeler, and helped to raise her two sons. The family is asking for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Erin Andrews’ Cancer Diagnosis Sparked A Much-Needed Wakeup Call

Erin Andrews isn’t messing around when it comes to her health.

The sportscaster and “Dancing with the Stars” host revealed earlier this year that she had been treated for cervical cancer. The experience, she said, made her prioritize her wellbeing in a new way. And even though she’s often on the road and living out of a suitcase, she vows to take care of herself ― especially when it comes to working out.

“It’s like going to therapy,” she told HuffPost. “You don’t necessarily want to go at first, but after you feel so much better and it’s amazing.”

Back in January, Andrews revealed that she had undergone surgery in 2016 to remove her cervical cancer. She was shocked when she was diagnosed with the disease, a condition that will affect more than 12,000 other women this year. It took some time for Andrews to reconcile that she had a health issue.

“I’m somebody who never misses a doctor’s appointment,” she said. “That’s why I think my situation was so scary and so unbelievable. I hadn’t missed an annual with my gynecologist. This came up over a year and it really took us by shock.”

I’m somebody who never misses a doctor’s appointment. That’s why I think my situation was so scary and so unbelievable.

Andrews may have been surprised about the cancer discovery because of how often she gets checkups, but that type of vigilance is also the reason for her good prognosis. Cervical cancer survival rates average around 93 percent if it’s caught in the early stages.

“You have to be smart about your health,” Andrews stressed. “You have to get checked up. Detection is so key.”

The TV personality also leaned on her friends and family after her diagnosis. It seems simple but it works: Research suggests social and emotional support can be beneficial for a person’s physical wellbeing.

The best thing I’ve learned over the years is that you need to give yourself a break.

Andrews’ last line of defense when it comes to her health is self-compassion, especially given the pressures of her career and public personal life. Whenever she feels burned out, she tells her family that she “just needs a minute” and takes some alone time (which includes her bed and watching a few episodes of “The Real Housewives”).

“The best thing I’ve learned over the years is that you need to give yourself a break,” she said. “You want to have it all together … and look like you can hang. But sometimes you just need to cut yourself slack.”

How’s that for wellbeing wisdom?

Shannen Doherty Reveals That Her Cancer Is In Remission

Shannen Doherty has some great news to share.

The actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, revealed Friday that her cancer is in remission.

“Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment,” the former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star wrote on Instagram. “What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES. Now more waiting.”

Doherty, though, remained cautious as she decides on further treatment and what challenges could lie ahead.

“As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows, the next five years is crucial,” she added. “Reoccurrences happen all the time. Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait. In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries. Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now…. remission. I’m going to just breathe.”

Doherty, 46, has chronicled her cancer treatments and progress on social media. In November, she posted a photo on Instagram from her first day of radiation treatment. “Radiation is frightening to me,” she wrote below the image. “Something about not being able to see the laser, see the treatment and having this machine moving around you just scares me.”

Just this past week, she shared a picture showing how her hair has started to grow back following cancer treatment. “Live life to the fullest,” she said. “Cherish every second. Love fiercely. And thank God for every second. I’ll keep you all posted and thank you for your positive energy and prayers. and yes…. that is a puff ball on top of my head. Just happy it’s growing!!”

Photo Of Husband Supporting Wife With Cancer Has The Internet Weeping

This viral photo of a husband supporting his wife during her cancer treatment is a reminder of what marriage is really about.

On April 14, Mackenna Newman, 17, tweeted a photo of her dad Jon posted up outside his wife Marci’s bedroom, writing, “My mom has to stay in her room in isolation for her cancer radiation so my dad set up a desk at her door to keep her company and I’m crying.”

The sweet image was retweeted more than 7,500 times and received 100K likes on the Love What Matters Facebook page.

According to Newman, Marci was diagnosed with thyroid cancer (which spread to her lymph nodes and trachea) in October. But Jon has been right by her side ever since.

“Jon goes to every doctor’s appointment, every blood test, every surgery, every radiation,” Marci told BuzzFeed News. “And, as you can see, if he can’t be by my side he is as close as he can get!”

Twitter was moved by Jon’s compassion:

And this face just sums it all up:

The Huffington Post reached out to Newman for comment but had not heard back at the time of publication. This story may be updated.

This Little Girl Is Giving Bald American Girl Dolls To Kids With Cancer

A third grader from Georgia is channeling her love for American Girl dolls into an initiative to bring joy to children with cancer.

Nine-year-old Bella Fricker is the founder of “Peace. Love. Bracelets.” ― a business through which she sells homemade bracelets to raise money for bald American Girl dolls. Bella donates these dolls to little girls battling cancer. So far, she’s purchased six dolls and gifted four.

Bella’s mom, Valerie Fricker, told The Huffington Post that her daughter came up with the idea for this project back in October.

“Unfortunately, four children in our community over the years have had cancer and really left an impression on her,” said the mom. “I have been personally involved in the fundraising efforts within the community in the past.”

She added, “I think she has just taken her love and passion for American Girl dolls and turned it into her passion with wanting to make little girls feel happy when they’re in the hospital and have lost their hair.”

Bella told HuffPost that one little girl named Lily Anderson, who passed away in 2012, was particularly inspiring to her. One day in October, she decided to do something for other children like Lily. “I was just sitting in my room one day unfolding a table, and my mom comes and she’s like ‘what are you doing?’” Bella recalled. “And I was like ‘I want to make a business to help little kids in the hospital.’”

The third grader has a mini office in her playroom, where she makes bracelets, packages them and ships them to her buyers. Anyone can order a bracelet online, and there’s a choice of custom options and “grab bags.” Valerie thinks her daughter has sold around 500 bracelets so far.

The Frickers connected with Laurie Cole at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) to coordinate the doll donations.

“She works with different child life specialist and doctors and nurses within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center to find a candidate for the doll,” Valerie said. “Most of the time, donations are just collected at the door. It is a very rare occasion that you get to actually meet the recipient of a donation, but Bella’s dream was to meet the little girls herself and give them these dolls.”

Bella’s dream has come true, and she’s been present to gift the dolls to their new owners.

“If she is lucky enough to find some information out about the little girl first then we go to the American Girl doll store and purchase an outfit or two,” the mom explained.

“For example, if they are a softball player, then Bella will get a softball outfit. If they are a ballerina, Bella will get a ballet outfit,” she added. “She also likes to give them a coloring book and crayons and a bracelet making set, so they have something to do during chemotherapy or hospital stays.”

Bella’s immediate goal is to donate 15 dolls to children at CHOA. Next, she wants to raise enough money to donate 20 dolls to kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee and 10-15 dolls to patients at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

“I hope I get enough money to buy a lot of dolls and give them to other hospitals around the county,” Bella told HuffPost.

Valerie said her daughter is considering raising money to buy Build-A-Bear stuffed animals for kids who don’t play with dolls. They’re also taking the steps to become 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a functioning website.

Ultimately, the mom is happy to see her daughter touch families’ lives. “I hope people are inspired to do good for others by reading about Bella’s mission,” she said.

Visit Bella’s Facebook page to purchase a bracelet and donate to the cause.

I Gave Myself Cancer, I Can Take It Away!

I am bold, brave and daring. I did the unthinkable. I went against traditional medical wisdom and came out a huge winner. This story is sometimes humorously conversational and details a journey that everyone who wants health without pills, potions, or sickening side effects needs to hear. The cures are here for cancer and every other type of immune system-related disease. The answers are in alternative medicine, and I’m just one of thousands who defeated cancer using unconventional means. It’s easy to regain your health without compromising consequences. David Bowie Didn’t Know Cancer Was Terminal Until Three Months Before Death

Days before the one-year anniversary of David Bowie’s death, a new documentary is shedding light on the singer’s final years before he lost an 18-month battle to liver cancer.

Directed by Francis Whately, “David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” airing on BBC Two Saturday, follows the rock icon on his 2003 A Reality Tour, as well as throughout the production of his last studio album, “Blackstar.”

According to Johan Renck, the director for the music video of the album’s final single, “Lazarus,” the 69-year-old rock icon discovered his cancer was terminal only three months before his death, while he was still working on the video.

According to the BBC, Renck explains in the documentary that he wasn’t made aware of Bowie’s diagnosis until after filming the video for “Lazarus,” which heavily features death and rebirth symbolism.

“I found out later that the week we were shooting is when he found out that it is over,” Renck said.

Despite the imagery that suggests Bowie was contemplating his own mortality through his music ― the video begins with the singer in a hospital bed with gauze covering his eyes ― the director denies that the music video had anything to do with his illness. The Guardian reports that Renck created the vision for “Lazarus” a week before learning of Bowie’s diagnosis.

“David said: ‘I just want to make it a simple performance video,’” Renck recalled. “I immediately said, ‘The song is called Lazarus, you should be in the bed.’ … To me it had to do with the biblical aspect of it … it had nothing to do with him being ill.”

Bowie kept his illness a secret from almost everyone around him in an effort to protect his family and continue work on his final album. According to the Guardian, the singer was making a sequel to “Lazarus” just weeks before his death.

“I don’t find it strange he kept his illness so private,” the documentary’s director, Francis Whately, told the Guardian. “He’d had his life picked over for 40 years and he thought he had said everything he wanted to say, there was nothing more.”

Andy Cohen Reveals Skin Cancer Diagnosis On ‘Live With Kelly’

Andy Cohen appeared alongside Kelly Ripa on “Live with Kelly” Friday morning and made a startling revelation about his health. The 48-year-old “Watch What Happens Live” host revealed that he was recently diagnosed with skin cancer after Ripa noticed an abnormal mark on his lip.

“I have to shout you out for something that you don’t know I’m going to shout you out for,” Cohen told Ripa on the morning show, explaining that he had this “black dot on his bottom lip” that she first noticed in April.

Although Cohen didn’t get it checked out right away, he told the audience that Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, were adamant that he go to a dermatologist.

“Finally, I did, and it was melanoma and they removed it and the whole thing, and I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic,” he told Ripa. “And it’s all fine.”

Cohen, who just released a book, Superficial: More Adventures From the Andy Cohen Diaries, said that his diagnosis has changed his attitude toward sunbathing.

“I am tanorexic. I love the sun, I really do, but be careful,” he said. “And I, of course, never thought that that kind of thing would happen to me and it will change my relationship to the sun.”

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, according to cancer.org. It’s less common but more dangerous than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers because it’s much more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not caught early.
