CFDA and NYCEDC Highlight Graduate Fashion Collections

The CFDA and New York City Economic Development Corp. earlier this week held the Fashion Future Graduate Showcase, a three-day showcase of design talent from some of the top fashion schools in the U.S. at Industria Studios. Collections by 53 graduates from schools including Academy of Art University, California College of the Arts, FIT, Kent State University, Parsons, Pratt, Rhode Island School of Design and SCAD were exhibited July 9 and 10, with the top four collections presented on July 11. The students selected for Wednesday’s presentation included Zhouyi Li of the Academy of Art University, Taliah Leslie of Pratt, and Britt Luttio and Peng Ye of Parsons.
All four students took the conceptual route, with Li working her garments with three-dimensional geometric shapes inspired by Richard Serra. Luttio worked with the concept of identity. “Within our persona we have multiple identities,” she said. “How I am in this space is not how I’m going to be with my lover or with my mom.” Her collection featured transformative pieces with a definitive Nineties attitude, that was influenced by things from her childhood — Victoria’s Secret and Betsey Johnson. Ye based his collection on the word 刹那, which represents the shortest accountable

CFDA Reminds Voters to Consider Race, Gender and Inclusivity for This Year’s Fashion Awards

GET OUT THE VOTE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America has reminded voters for its Fashion Awards to give some thought to race, gender and inclusivity.
In an e-mail sent out Monday, CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb advised recipients, “We truly want the event to celebrate the full creative spectrum and richness of American fashion. Just think of how much fashion is changing, and the diversity of our industry. Designers with broad cultural backgrounds and political ideas are expressing their experiences and beliefs in their collections. Their work deserves greater acknowledgment, acceptance and visibility.”
Nearly 1,000 people are invited to participate and roughly 700 to 750 actively participate in the process for the CFDA Fashion Awards, which calls for nominations and then a vote for winners.
“Over the years, a lot of people have always said that they felt like the same people, over and over, are getting the same awards. Awards are really based on talent. Hopefully, people are nominating and voting based on who they think are doing the best things. But the power’s with the people — with the nominating committee, with the awards’ guild. If they feel there are people who are more deserving then

CFDA, Wall Group Host Celebrity Stylist Panel in L.A.

In the second of two bicoastal panels organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and The Wall Group, celebrity stylists Elizabeth Stewart, Karla Welch and Ilaria Urbinati convened at the W Hollywood in Los Angeles on Monday for the panel “Today’s Image Makers: The Relationship Between Stylist and Designer.”
Moderated by Melissa Magsaysay, the panel explored the changing role of the celebrity stylist, and how they work with myriad designers hoping to get their clothes and accessories on stars on the red carpet.
“We’re really like mini magazines now,” said Stewart, who started her career as a fashion editor at Fairchild Publications and The New York Times. “My assistants do what a market editor would do at a magazine, and we are creating content when we create looks for our clients.”
What used to be a behind-the-scenes job has morphed into one where the stylist, via social media, shares behind-the-curtain glimpses of readying clients for the red carpet, as well as his or her point of view on everything from fashion to politics.
“Would you ever dress Melania Trump?” asked one person in the audience. “No. Absolutely not,” said Welch and Stewart. “She buys her own clothes,” said Stewart.
The women also discussed

CFDA Stays Positive Despite Loss of Amazon Sponsorship

New York Fashion Week: Men’s may have wrapped up its most successful edition to date last week but it’s already facing a hurdle for next season: Amazon Fashion, which has been the principal sponsor since the shows started two years ago, has ended its association.
The decision comes even though the web giant is making an evermore aggressive push into fashion, and views it as one of its fastest-growing categories.
Despite Amazon’s move, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, organizers of the shows, is putting a positive spin on things, pointing to the ongoing commitment of at least two of the other sponsors — Cadillac and men’s grooming brand Axe.
“This season of NYFW: Men’s was a creative and commercial success,” the CFDA said in a statement to WWD. “We look forward to the next season taking place July 10 to 13. NYFW: Men’s continues to thrive because of the ongoing commitment of partners such as Cadillac and Axe.”
Samsung is also a sponsor and its participation will continue, said Mark Beckham, business director of Fashion Week for CFDA.
Beckman stressed that even though Amazon’s two-year contract with the men’s shows has ended, the company continues to work with the organization on other projects. He also

CFDA Not Cool With Kanye

News of the Yeezy Season 5 show came Tuesday afternoon. Kanye West will be showing his collection done in collaboration with Adidas during New York Fashion Week on Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. at Pier 59 Studios. He has chosen a time slot between Anna Sui and Thom Browne, a time slot that has already been booked by Marchesa.
There were questions about whether West would show after last season’s Roosevelt Island fiasco and reports of his ailing mental health at the end of last year. Adidas did not respond to WWD’s request for information about the show prior to and after Tuesday’s announcement of the show time and date. West did not consult the CFDA about his decision to stage his show opposite Marchesa and the CFDA is not happy about it.
Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA, told WWD in an exclusive statement: “Once again, CFDA was not approached or consulted about the possibility of Kanye West showing on the official New York Fashion Week schedule. As the scheduler of the week, the CFDA works with more than 300 brands to identify appropriate times for them to show their collections and avoid scheduling conflicts. Not going though the proper channels is disruptive

There will be a celebratory cocktail party Tuesday in Los Angeles at the W Hollywood.
“Forward has always been a champion of emerging designers, and with the current shake-ups in the fashion industry, from e-commerce and fast fashion to social shopping, it’s a challenging time for early talent to achieve that critical next stage in their growth,” said Walker, fashion director of Forward. “We really care how their brands are evolving and want to sit back outside the hustle and bustle of fashion week

CFDA Plans Second Jewelry Design Showcase

DISPLAY CASE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America will hold a second iteration of its CFDA Jewelry Showcase at its New York City headquarters on Oct. 26. The showcase, comprised of 17 CFDA-member labels, will act as a group press day for participants. The CFDA held its first jewelry showcase in October 2013, and has revisited the idea after an outpouring of interest from jewelry design members.
“It helped each of the participants be in front of editors that they might not have been otherwise be in front of. The power of a group is stronger than the power of one — it’s about creating a collective force,” CFDA chief executive officer Steven Kolb said of the outcome of the 2013 showcase.
Of the CFDA’s approximately 500 member labels, some 79 are jewelry designers.
Kolb said of the organization’s showcase concept: “It’s to really put a spotlight on jewelry designers; women’s fashion week is always a big deal and  gives lot of attention to women’s designers. We launched men’s fashion week this past summer and that put a significant spotlight on men’s, so it seemed natural…to categorize other segments of membership.”
This same idea will soon extend to realms outside jewelry as well.

CFDA Honors Rachel Zoe

CFDA HONORS RACHEL ZOE: The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Refinery29 and Neiman Marcus launched their Spotlight series in Los Angeles Wednesday night honoring Rachel Zoe. CFDA chief executive officer Steven Kolb, Refinery29 editor in chief Christene Barberich and Neiman’s fashion director Ken Downing hosted the dinner at Terrine that drew designers Greg Chait, Jennifer Meyer, Claire Vivier, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, Rosetta Getty, Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy and Louis Leeman along with actresses Grace Gummer, Sara Foster and Rebecca Gayheart. “This series puts a spotlight on successful women who entered the business with non-traditional backgrounds. The message that you can succeed regardless of your training is a positive one that we hope will resonate with the Refinery audience,” said Kolb, noting the new partnership with the media company, which he hopes will garner a younger audience for the CFDA. The next Spotlight series will take place in New York in June honoring Tabitha Simmons. Kolb was also busy checking out the Los Angeles manufacturing scene, with visits to BCBG, Simon Miller, Nasty Gal and Reformation. “We’re looking at ways to do an event here that contributes industry knowledge and rallies support from the city,” he said.
