Another Change Hits Italy’s Men’s Brands as Corneliani CEO Exits

MILAN — Marking yet another change within Italy’s men’s wear industry, Corneliani SpA chief executive officer Paolo Roviera has exited the storied company and has been succeeded by Luigi Ferrando.
In a brief statement, the Mantua-based firm said it “confirms the development goals of the Corneliani brand, in line with the strategies outlined in 2016.” The date refers to the acquisition by Bahrain-based Investcorp of a majority stake in Corneliani in June that year and signaling the fund’s increasing focus on luxury. The deal was meant at the time to be preparatory to an initial public offering, which has not taken place, and also overcome succession plans.
Ferrando joins Corneliani, known for its sleek tailoring and high-end quality products, from a different sector, as he leverages experience in furniture. His curriculum lists managerial positions at Unopiù and Arquati as well as lighting firms Targetti and Louis Poulsen.
Roviera arrived at Corneliani in September 2016, tasked with the expansion of the brand globally. He was previously ceo of Pal Zileri, controlled by Qatar-based Mayhoola.
Carlalberto Corneliani, who founded the company in 1958 with his late brother Claudio, was succeeded by Investcorp’s Hazem Ben-Gacem as chairman of Corneliani.

Change Agents: Using Technology, Funds to Leapfrog Luxury in Africa

PARIS — Armed with a 100-million-euro investment fund and a vast network, Ghanaian entrepreneur Roberta Annan is eager to leapfrog Africa into the burgeoning global luxury market.
“I’ve appointed myself as an ambassador — nobody has appointed me — to really position people that are doing things so we can rebrand and reposition how people view Africa,” Annan told a gathering here Tuesday organized by investment bank Ohana & Co.
“She is probably one of the best ambassadors for Africa,” Karine Ohana, managing partner of the firm, said by way of introduction, going on to note that the population of the African continent is expected to rise to 2.5 billion by 2050, making it a key trade partner for Europe.
Guests including designer Olivier Theyskens, former French minister Philippe Douste-Blazy and industrialist Laurent Dassault heard how Annan was supporting entrepreneurs like Menaye Donkor, a former Ghanaian beauty queen who presented her cosmetics brand, She-y, at the event. The line, made in Italy, uses ethically sourced shea butter from Ghana and algae from Senegal, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Menaye Charity Organization, which provides education for underprivileged children.

Yara Shahidi on Getting Out the Youth Vote: ‘Hopefully We See Change Coming This Midterms’

Even before turning 18 in February, Yara Shahidi encouraged Gen-Z to engage politically via Eighteen x 18.

“There are two major problems: information dissemination and voter registration,” the Black-ish star, who is one of PEOPLE’s 25 Women Changing the World, says in this week’s issue.

Though Shahidi, who was accepted to Harvard for this year, believes “anyone who follows me knows where I lean,” her organization remains nonpartisan.

“The information disseminated should allow us to look at each topic at hand and form our own opinions and allow that to determine your partisanship, rather than the other way around,” she says.

And Shahidi won’t let backlash over actors, musicians and athletes getting political stop her from speaking out.

“If your very body is being politicized, you have every right to speak up and should be able to utilize your platform,” the Minnesota native asserts. “It’s not a matter of being an actor or an actress, but being a human that’s concerned and affected by the world at hand.”

In September, Eighteen x 18 hosted its first #WeVoteNext summit in Los Angeles so Shahidi could directly connect young people.

RELATED VIDEO: Meet the Inspiring Women Demanding Action on Gun Violence Prevention

“It was a nice group of kids because each state was represented,” the actress says. “It was a moment to actually talk to each other about what we want to see in our political system, in this midterm election. So rather than me saying, ‘I’m the voice of Generation Z or somebody who knows every single person in my peer group,’ we actually got to talk to each other and figure out what we wanted and what we needed and take local approaches.”

Shahidi, who comes from a family of educators, thinks the motivation for young people to vote starts with learning history — but admits that the current curriculum has its flaws.

“I feel like often times, you’re only told about your government in your U.S. government class or U.S. history, and even still, it’s of the government of the 18th century. How does that even apply?” she asks. “Having learned a very Euro-centric history, often times there is no correlation between us and our duty to the people around us. I think that history should be restructured. And those classes should be restricted to be more inclusive.”

For full coverage of PEOPLE’s 25 Women Changing the World, pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday

But with early voting numbers already breaking records, the Grown-ish actress remains optimistic about the future. “I’m inspired that hopefully we see change coming this midterms,” Shahidi says. “My goal is that it’s a culture that’s here to stay.”

Mark Hamill Reveals He Once Suggested Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Lose His Accent’ and Change His Name

Sometimes those from galaxies far, far away don’t know best.

Mark Hamill revealed on Twitter, Saturday, that he gave some misguided advice to an up-and-coming star back in the day: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger asked me for advice when he was just starting out,” the Star Wars actor, 66, tweeted on Saturday. “I told him to lose his accent for a wider range of roles & to change his last name since no one could pronounce it.”

Hamill added of Schwarzenegger, 71, “He did the opposite & became one of the biggest stars EVER.”

RELATED: Hugh Jackman and Arnold Schwarzenegger Pump Iron at Iconic Gym: ‘What a Way to Start the 4th!’

Schwarzenegger responded on Twitter, however, that he does not fault Hamill for the old guidance.

He tweeted, “Your advice was absolutely correct under any normal circumstances, and those were the rules back then. I just happen to be a rule-breaker.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Schwarzenegger, who underwent open-heart surgery in March, went on to star in films like the Terminator franchise and Total Recall, and was eventually elected governor of California — with his Austrian accent and his last name, of course.

RELATED VIDEO: Mark Hamill Shares His Favorite Star Wars Last Jedi theory (It Involves a Nudist Colony!)

Hamill is known for his candid personality, and recently doled out a different Hollywood-related suggestion: He thinks that President Donald Trump‘s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was destroyed last month by a man with a pickaxe, should be replaced by a star for late Stars Wars actress Carrie Fisher.

RELATED: Mark Hamill Says His ‘Final Chapter’ of Star Wars Will Be ‘Bittersweet’ Without Carrie Fisher

After the West Hollywood City Council unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to permanently remove Trump’s star — a move that carries only symbolic weight since the council does not have jurisdiction over the Walk of Fame — Hamill tweeted, “How about replacing it with someone who really earned it? Like .”

Josie Natori Receives Honorary Degree From Manhattanville College, Tells Graduates to Embrace Change

AFTER SCHOOL WITH JOSIE: As the keynote speaker at this year’s undergraduate commencement at her alma mater Manhattanville College, Josie Natori was in for a few surprises.
Saturday’s stormy weather in New York caused the commencement to be moved indoors to the campus’ chapel where Natori had graduated 50 years ago. That morning-of change of plans was something she only learned about upon her arrival and the new location made the occasion even more memorable. “For me, selfishly, it was very nostalgic,” she said Monday.
Another surprise was the honorary degree that Manhattanville bestowed on the founder and chief executive officer of The Natori Company. “Of course, I burst into tears,” she said. Her former dean Elizabeth McCormack, who became president of the school in 1966, was in the crowd, as were Natori’s husband Ken and her son Kenneth. In her remarks, the designer said, “Change is the only constant — and right now, it happens in the blink of an eye. Embrace change or be left behind.”
Some of her other guideposts included:

You must love what you do. Because, if you don’t love it, you’re not going to succeed.
Be open to all possibilities and listen to your inner feelings.

Sustainability, Identity, Social Change Key Themes in Parsons Graduation Collections

More than 300 students from Parsons School of Design’s AAS Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing and BFA Fashion Design programs are exhibiting their graduation collections during a three-day festival that runs May 16 through May 18. For the first time, the exhibition is open to the public.
Spread over three floors of The New School’s University Center, the collections are curated by topical themes, such as Materiality, having to do with textile innovation, Social Justice, Systems and Society, as well as designs having to do with sleep, and a whole lot of gender and race identity. There was a lot to take in, with many of the garments on display falling under deconstructed, gender-fluid and fantasy-driven.
In terms of textile innovation and sustainability, one standout collection was by Gal Yakobovitch, who was inspired by her father who used to make surfboards in the Seventies. She sought to find biodegradable replacements for the classic materials used to make wet suits and such, developing her own tapioca bioplastic, gelatin glass and gelatin foam from ingredients that can mostly be found in a bodega and making her materials in her own kitchen. “This one is remeltable and recastable,” she said, holding up a rubbery material

H&M Names Five Winners of Global Change Award

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz AB named the five winners of its Global Change Award, and asked the public to vote online for one of them to help split the 1 million euro prize.
The fashion industry, including fast-fashion groups that offer inexpensive clothing at cutthroat prices, is under pressure to rein in waste as public awareness of environmental issues gains ground.
Winners were: Crop-A-Porter, which makes textile from food crop harvest leftovers; Algae Apparel, which uses algae as a dye; Smart Stitch, which makes dissolvable thread; The Regenerator, which separates cotton and polyester blends for recycling, and Fungi Fashion, which makes clothes from decomposing mushroom roots.
“All industries need to re-think, innovate and challenge status quo,” said H&M chief executive officer and board member Karl-Johan Persson.
The company noted that applicants offered a broad range of ideas, but that most of the solutions came from outside the fashion industry.
“This year’s Global Change Award winners are about disrupting business-as-usual to help transition us to a low-carbon and circular economy,” noted Vikram Widge, who heads climate finance and policy for the International Finance Corporation, and was a member of the award’s jury.

Paris Jackson Draws Inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor for New Ambassador Role: ‘She Was an Unstoppable Force of Change’

Paris Jackson is drawing inspiration from her late father’s close friend, Elizabeth Taylor, as she tackles her responsibilities as the new ambassador for Taylor’s AIDS foundation.

Jackson, daughter of music legend Michael Jackson, said Taylor’s example has influenced her own philanthropy — especially within the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

“Elizabeth was a real badass,” she told PEOPLE ahead of the Mothers2Mothers and ETAF benefit dinner Tuesday in Beverly Hills, which she attended with brother Prince. “It’s very rare that you see someone with that kind of influence really use their platform for something so important.”

She added of Taylor: “She wasn’t going to let the HIV/AIDS pandemic run wild as it directly impacted her friends and loved ones.”

Jackson, 19, was recently named the new ambassador, in a role she said touches her “familial roots.” Taylor, who died in 2011, was a close friend of Michael’s before his 2009 death and was even the teen’s godmother.

“She was a courageous and unstoppable force of change during a time when the government remained silenced on the ongoing crisis,” Jackson told PEOPLE of Taylor. “She demanded give HIV/AIDS the attention it desperately needed.”

“Her story is an example of how one person can have such a profound and positive effect on the whole of humanity,” she continued.

As part of her duties, Jackson visited Malawi with the organization, where she met with those living in a small village.

“There I met a young mother who told us about her experience and how the mothers2mothers program has helped her journey,” she told PEOPLE of the trip. “If she had gotten medication sooner, she wouldn’t have passed HIV on to her child.”

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” she added. “The programs funded by ETAF are working hard to make sure mothers and families get the care they need.”

Where Is Baby Dream? Inside Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna’s Custody Agreement — and How It Could Change After Online Drama

Prior to his social media rampage against his ex-fiancée earlier this week, Rob Kardashian had been amicably co-parenting his daughter with Blac Chyna. But in the wake of Kardashian’s explosive onslaught of online posts against Chyna, who is caring for baby Dream?

Before Kardashian, 30, publicly attacked Chyna, 29, on Instagram and Twitter on Wednesday, the former couple established an unwritten agreement to split their time with their 34-week-old daughter equally every week, a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE.

Per the agreement, Kardashian is to have custody of Dream Sunday through Thursday and then she’s with Chyna Thursday through the following Sunday, but “Rob did not bring Dream home last night and he’s not bringing her today,” says the source.

The source says Chyna currently believes Dream is with a nanny at Kris Jenner’s house and Chyna is sending her own nanny to both houses.

“They have have two nannies, one works five days a week and one works two days a week. The five-day-a-week nanny does the pick up and drop offs,” explains the source. “The baby is supposed to be with Chyna per their agreement — which isn’t written, just what they’ve been doing for the last six or seven months — and she is not. Chyna is doing everything in her power to get her back.”

On Friday, high-powered civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom announced that she is now legally representing Chyna and is seeking restraining orders against Kardashian on behalf of her client after the reality star repeatedly posted graphic and expletive-ridden content about Chyna, in which he accused her of drug use, alcohol abuse and infidelity, and shared three alleged nude photos of her.

“I represent Blac Chyna,” Bloom tweeted Friday. “I just gave Rob Kardashian notice that we’ll be in court Monday seeking restraining orders against him. More to come.”

Chyna’s rep and Bloom’s co-counsel Walter Mosley also told PEOPLE, “Lisa Bloom is the best in the business and has the right sensitivities and skill set to handle this delicate and complex matter. She’s a warrior for women’s rights and that’s the type of lawyer we need right now.”

Chyna’s restraining orders could also be filed on behalf of Dream, but because there is no written custody agreement there is a lot of grey area for the judge to consider in terms of Dreams future, says family law attorney Alyssa Eisner.

“Nobody has a superior right to this child because there’s nothing in official writing, so no one has been provided custody,” says the New York-based lawyer, who is not representing any of the parties potentially involved. “Their de facto arrangement is not law, so the courts would consider that but also look to see what has been the change in circumstance that now brings one of them to court. For example, these pornographic images or allegations of abuse or orders of protections.”

Kardashian and Chyna’s roller coaster relationship began in January 2016, when the two went public with their romance. They got engaged just months later, in April. In May, the two announced they were expecting their first child. They welcomed their daughter, Dream, last November, and by February, PEOPLE confirmed the two had called off their engagement.

Since Kardashian publicly put Chyna on blast Wednesday, his Instagram page was subsequently shut down and he has not responded to PEOPLE’s repeated requests for comment. Chyna initially responded to the messages in a Snapchat post, alleging that Kardashian hit her. The Snapchat was later taken down.

Although Kardashian’s famous family has not made any public comments about the situation, a source told PEOPLE that Kris Jenner and her daughters are “deeply disappointed and frustrated with Rob.”

“He’s made a difficult situation even worse,” said the source, who noted that the family is focusing on Dream. “At this stage, the primary concern is protecting Dream from all this nastiness.”

This Tweet About Pet Names Could Change Your Relationship For The Better

Most couples come up with pet names for each other fairly early into a relationship: Baby, babe, boo, sweetheart ― we all have our faves.

While those are all classics, there’s nothing wrong with switching things up every now and then. Last week, Twitter user @cybersygh suggested doing just that and it really caught on:

Things escalated quickly after that, when Bela Garces (@djbbga on Twitter) showed the tweet to her boyfriend Isaac and posted his reaction:

Isaac loved the idea:

He got a little carried away but it was adorable:

Garces’ hilarious tweet quickly went viral, with over 87K reshares and 241K “likes.”

The 19-year-old told The Huffington Post she couldn’t stop laughing at the nicknames and that Isaac hasn’t stopped since.

“It just makes me laugh every time, it’s so silly,” she said. “He calls me food names in person too, and I try to call him food names back but he’s a lot funnier. My favorite is when he calls me Colombian snacks since we’re both Colombian!”

Here are the two adorable soft tacos together, with one of their favorite foods:

After Garces’ tweet went viral, people kept the momentum going, sharing the food-related terms of endearment they’d texted their girlfriends and boyfriends:

Does it get any more romantic than “you’re more than a snack, you’re a meal?” Nope, not as far as we’re concerned.

Share your favorite snack-related pet name in the comments.

Alexis Arquette’s Sister Patricia Celebrates the Transgender Pioneer’s Legacy 6 Months After Death: ‘I Wouldn’t Change a Thing’

Alexis Arquette was undoubtedly one of the first transgender activists in Hollywood.

Coming from a family of actors, Alexis was accepted when she came out. Her sister Patricia was concerned about the impact her sister’s revelation would have on her career — though Alexis was not.

“Alexis was really also very powerful, and strong, and really brave, very brave,” Patricia told PEOPLE while at the Let’s Toast the Extraordinary Achievements of Alexis Arquette pre-GLAAD Media Awards dinner sponsored by Ketel One in Hollywood.

“We had a long conversation when Alexis told me that she was transgender, and I said, ‘Okay. So what do you do about Hollywood? How will you get work? People are not progressive in Hollywood and it could really negatively impact your career. Are you thinking everything through?’ ” the Academy Award Winner recalled.

Patricia affirms that despite the obvious risks, Alexis was confident in her decision to come out in Hollywood.

“Alexis was very brave to make that decision,” her sister continued. “She really wanted to help progress the world and move the world forward.”

Alexis died last September at age 47, but childhood memories of Alexis are still vivid for Patricia.

“Alexis and David both had these beds that sort of look like space pods. They were like these tubes that you could get in,” the 48-year-old recalled. “My mom was making Alexis’ bed and realized that a big chunk of the mattress was missing out of the corner. She said, ‘Alexis what happened to your mattress?’ Alexis said, ‘I need the foam to make a puppet.’ So she pulled out this puppet with this little sparkly dress on it and my mom said, ‘Oh, my god, it’s gorgeous. My kids are so creative.’ “

Patricia was joined at the event by brothers David and Richmond along with her boyfriend Eric White. Not only were they there to remember their sister, but also to honor the many lives that she touched.

“We’ve gotten so many letters. I’ve had letters from people all over the world who said their first experience of a trans person was with Alexis,” Patricia shared in awe of her late sister.  “Watching Alexis in Last Exit to Brooklyn — which was Alexis’ first movie — she played a trans person in the 1950s which was considered really a crossdresser at that time. That’s what people called trans people then.”

Patricia also noted ,”Alexis was incredibly creative our whole lives. I grew up with Alexis putting on makeup, trying on high heels …. Alexis was my best friend when we grew up, so I wouldn’t change one thing about Alexis.”

Cody Alan: Seeing A ‘Guy Like Me On TV Who Is Country And Gay’ Can Change Minds

Just under a week after coming out of the closet, Country Music Television (CMT) personality Cody Alan is opening up about his decision to share his sexuality with the world, and what he hopes his coming out will accomplish.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Alan reflected on the reality of knowing that he is gay his entire life while having to operate within the historically homophobic world of country music. He told the publication that he hopes minds can be changed by his decision to live authentically and visibly.

“From a professional standpoint, you do consider all the variables and you think about how other people would be affected by it,” Alan told Rolling Stone. “I realized that this could have a great, positive impact on many people who may be country music fans and may feel like they don’t fit in. But they see a guy like me on TV who is country and gay, and they recognize that there’s a place for you here, and that country music is a warm, welcoming space.”

Alan came out with the help of GLAAD on Jan. 12, telling the world that he is “happier and healthier” than ever. He later received an outpouring of support from others in the country music world.

“When you have to reveal [yourself] to people you love [and] you don’t know what the consequences or their reaction will be, there’s a lot of heart in that, and a lot of prayer and love you have to have for yourself and for those you’re sharing with,” Alan continued. “There’s been some dark moments, but I’m happy to say that I do feel like I’ve reached the peak of a mountain here, and it’s all good.”

Thank you for continuing to be so outspoken, Cody!

Broadway’s Telly Leung Wants His Latest Work To Spur Social Change

When he auditioned for “In Transit,” actor-singer Telly Leung saw the show as a simple, but heartfelt, “love letter” to New York.

Billed as Broadway’s first-ever a cappella musical, the show follows 11 frazzled Manhattanites whose disparate lives intersect on the city’s subway system. In it, Leung stars as Steven, whose fiancée Trent (Justin Guarini) is struggling to tell his born-again Christian mother about the mixed race couple’s relationship before their wedding. (Watch the trailer for “In Transit” above.)

Given musical theater’s recent embrace of queer themes in “Fun Home” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” among other shows, Steven and Trent’s storyline seems conventional enough, especially as it is one of many character arcs in the ensemble piece. One day before “In Transit” began previews on Nov. 10, however, the future of LGBTQ rights was thrust into uncertainty following Donald Trump’s surprise accession to the U.S. presidency. Suddenly, Leung said, the show’s all-inclusive message was given a renewed sense of purpose.

“The whole show is about people who are trying to get somewhere and feeling a bit stuck, a bit helpless. New Yorkers are driven and we’re always trying to get somewhere,” the 36-year-old “Glee” veteran told The Huffington Post before “In Transit” opened on Broadway Dec. 11. “It’s frustrating when we don’t get there.”

But it isn’t just the queer aspect of “In Transit” that gives the musical, which was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth, a sense of urgency in Leung’s eyes. Seeing the show’s diverse cast – which includes Margo Seibert, James Snyder, Erin Mackey and Nicholas Ward – work “in harmony together, visually and audibly,” is “something that we all really need at this time in our country,” he said.

Interestingly, “In Transit” debuts at a time when one of Leung’s earlier projects is getting a new life. “Allegiance,” which follows a Japanese-American family thrown into an internment camp when the U.S. enters World War II, will be shown Tuesday on 600 movie screens across the country.

That musical, which also starred Tony winner Lea Salonga and “Star Trek” icon George Takei, enjoyed a successful out-of-town run in San Diego, California. Despite Takei’s outspoken passion for the project, the show received mixed reviews when it hit Broadway in November 2015, and closed in February after 111 performances.

Given the nation’s political climate, Leung hopes the film version of “Allegiance” is received differently. The show, he said, can now been seen as an important reminder to those now grappling with Trump’s divisive rhetoric on minority groups.

“It was always in the artistic vision of our producers to create a Broadway show that not only seeks to entertain, but educate and bring about some social change, too,” he said. “This story needs to live on, and there are lessons to be learned.”

Collectively, both “In Transit” and “Allegiance” are important reminders that “art doesn’t exist in a vacuum at times like this,” Leung said. “That message is more important now than ever.”

Telly Leung stars in “In Transit,” now playing at the Circle in the Square Theater in New York. Head here for more information.

Seven Fateful Moments When Great Men Met to Change the World

Seven Fateful Moments When Great Men Met to Change the World

Throughout time, leaders at the pinnacle of power – popes and kings, presidents and prime ministers, czars and generals – have subscribed to the belief that they can change the course of history, not by the force of arms, but through charm, skillful negotiation, honesty, deceit, and all the other arts of peaceful human exchange. Award-winning author Charles L. Mee Jr. reproduces seven singular moments when heads of state have come together to decide the future of the world. He examines the uses of summitry, from the directness of Pope Leo’s confrontation with Attila the Hun near Rome to Henry VIII and Francis I’s meeting on the Field of the Cloth of Gold; from the surprise encounter between Cortés and Moctezuma to the intricacies negotiated by Metternich and Talleyrand at the Congress of Vienna; from the ironies of Wilson, Clemenceau and Lloyd George’s summit at the Paris Peace Conference to the unintended consequences of Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt’s gathering at Yalta; and finally to Gorbachev’s desperate appeal to the G7 nations in London to be included in their powerful club. Mee peeks through the curtains of diplomacy to reveal the hidden agendas and the glorious personalities at work. Taken together, these seven fateful moments are bracing and humbling reminders of the enormous complexity and mystery of human affairs.

The Heart of Change

THE HEART OF CHANGE

A frequent explanation for the unexpected election result is that this was a “change election” in which a majority of voters wanted some kind of sweeping change at the national level. Disruption is another word being used to explain both the method and the aim of the Trump campaign. The new leader represents the energy of disruption that will shake things up and turn things around.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that disruption comes from the root rupture which carries troubling meanings like “tearing asunder, breaking apart, splitting up and breaking to pieces.” When it comes to change the old warning is ‘be careful what you wish for.’ People who simply want some kind of change often wind up ‘throwing the baby out with the bath.’ Like the Brexit vote in the British Isles, there will be increasing buyer’s remorse as people realize that the problems of the modern world are massive in size, complicated in nature and global in scope.

Change, so greatly desired, is not easily accomplished. Genuine change requires a sense of unity, a feeling of wholeness as happens when a person’s entire life becomes altered; mind and body, spirit and soul. The same truth applies to a country or a culture which must touch its deepest, most inclusive roots in order to both unify and genuinely change.

On the day after the election a group of us were meeting in the office of our non-profit organization that works with at-risk youth, people in various states of trauma and inter-cultural healing projects. We were trying to imagine what changes and what troubles would come from the upsetting election and the vitriolic campaign. The obvious concern was that the fractures and divisions in our culture would only be intensified and the rampant disparities be increased.

Our weighty conversation was interrupted by the sound of people shouting, getting louder and louder in the street outside. Pulling up the window blinds revealed a group of 70 to 80 high school students marching up the sidewalk below, calling out in unison, “Give us our future back. Give us our future back.” We went down to the intersection where they stood chanting enthusiastically, their tone sounding more like a song than a demand.

An older man with a loud, deep voice yelled out: “White lives matter too!” Someone nearby answered, “Of course;” as if gently pointing to the white students who looked to be the majority of a diverse group that included African American, Hispanic and Asian boys and girls all standing together.

The chant shifted to, “Save our future. Save our future.” Some people in cars began honking back in a kind of rhythmic support of the young spirits. Others banged their horns impatiently, as if to say, “Get out of my way; I don’t have time for this.” For a moment the daily traffic ceased as the divide between the past and the future appeared in the intersection along with the potentially growing distance between the young and the old.

Painful divisions in the culture have been there all along, serious injuries have gone unhealed for decades and great injustices have been routinely ignored. Now that campaigns are waged like desperate, all-out wars, all the underlying angers, resentments and fears have been stirred up and have risen to the surface. There is a return of the repressed fears and feelings and a release of toxins as when an old wound is opened or ruptures.

Amidst reckless provocation, the age-old American problems of race, ethnicity and immigration have become weaponized and the fractures and fault lines between genders and age groups, between urban and rural populations, between wealthy and poor groups have been rashly exploited. When a country becomes so divided winning is a lot like losing. When the electoral vote and the popular vote diverge everyone loses something. Amidst all the vitriol, crude animosity, fake news and false information something essential has been lost and everyone’s future is in greater peril.

There in the street, I wanted to tell the students that they were right to cry out in the midst of all the pain and fear. I wanted to call out that those who indulge in hating others secretly hate themselves. I wanted to shout that every war has two losers; that the real battle is always in the human heart; that the genuine ideals of truth and justice, of love and beauty remain worth fighting for regardless of the odds.

But, they were on the move again, crossing through the intersection with a new chant that became even more passionate, “Love trumps hate! Love is greater than hate!” The words rang out above the sounds of the street as the intersection began to clear and the daily traffic resumed. “Love is greater than hate,” echoed loudly from the walls of the buildings on both sides of the street as everyone moved on carrying their own thoughts and hopes and fears.

The world can become polarized and threatened in a thousand different ways and we can become deeply disheartened as “man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn.” The fact that love is greater than hate is all that tips the balance of the world towards life. But only if enough people, young and old, find the love and courage in their hearts to truly change the world.

One root of the word change means to simply “exchange one thing for another.” The deeper, more radical root means “to transform, to become a different substance entirely.” What we need at this critical time in the history of the world are the kinds of changes that go beyond the limits of power politics, fixed ideologies and economic theories. What we need are the kinds of changes that can only begin in the depths of the human heart and soul, the place where history is always being made. Hate and anger can change things in the moment; but love is greater than hate and what the heart loves can alter the substance of life and thus change the world.

An old idea states that each soul comes to life at a time when it has something to give to the world. Each child born, regardless of race or ethnicity, gender identification or sexual inclination, social status or economic condition brings some gifts and genius qualities to life. Each person is automatically valuable and worthy of respect because each has something substantial and unique to contribute to life.

We live at a time when both nature and culture need healing; when people all over the world need a renewed sense that life is indeed meaningful, that each living soul is worthy of love and respect. This is no time for cynicism or giving in to despair; this is the time we have come to life to live, the time to work for what we truly love. As the African proverb insists, ‘what you love is the cure.’ What we love is the cure for what ails us and what brings healing to the human heart also helps heal the world.

Love can be gentle when care is needed, but fierce when change is required. Despite all that is disheartening, because of all the pain and fear, it is time to become true agents of change in order to help transform the world we must live in together. Amidst all the darkness at this, the darkest time of the year, we can take heart from the voices and diverse spirits of the young who must imagine a better future for human cultures and for the common earth we all inhabit. The Scrub That Will Totally Change the Way You Wash Your Hair

We know what you’re thinking: a scrub … for my head? Whether you’re a product junkie who can never quite clear out all that buildup or a low-maintenance type who wants to revitalize limp locks, you’ll want to make room on your shower shelf for this game-changing product from famed Parisian hairstylist Christophe Robin.

ChristopheRobin
Courtesy Christophe Robin

Using sea salt and sweet almond oil, the paraben- and silicon-free cleanser gently exfoliates and detoxes your scalp while also hydrating hair. It’s perfect as a soothing, non-stripping shampoo post-coloring but is just as great as a weekly purifying treatment to give any hair type a strand-boosting pick-me-up.

In its minimalist-chic packaging, the product looks like your standard body scrub, complete with mineral salt-infused grittiness. But scoop up a teaspoonful and rub all over your wet scalp, and it melts into a luxuriously fizzy paste-cream consistency that, combined with the satisfyingly scratchy texture of the granules, gives you a salon-worthy head massage. And it’s laced with a subtly lush citrus scent: very French Riviera in the summertime, and one that actress Catherine Deneuve, a longtime client of Robin’s, would surely approve of.

Okay, so it’s not exactly cheap, but it comes in a huge tub that you’ll only need to dip into once or twice a week: The scalp-invigorating effects last for days afterwards. And considering the scrub’s hair — and maybe even life — transforming capabilities (is there anything as mood-boosting as a really good hair day?), it’s definitely well worth it.

Google Calendar wants to help you make time for yourself for a change

Finding time for our own personal aspirations can be hard, and when we do have time, we often conjure up a reason to push it to another day. Whether it’s exercising, learning a new language, or organizing your home — Google wants to help nudge you to get cracking on those personal goals through a new automated feature in Google Calendar.Related: Google Calendar finally lets you set reminders on desktop “One day it’s ‘I got called into a last-minute meeting,’ Jyoti Ramnath, product manager at Gmail, said in the blog post announcement. “The next day it’s ‘I have a friend in town.’ And before you know it, your goals are delayed or forgotten. In fact, with all the things you need to do in a given week, it’s probably harder than ever to find the time — even when your goal really matters to you.” To help you find the time, now when you tap the floating action button in Google Calendar, you’ll see a flag icon that will let you set a goal. The app will then find a time in your calendar to pencil your goal in — and it will automatically move it if you schedule another event during that time frame. When Calendar sends you a notification to get started on your goal, you can defer it or tap complete. The more you use the feature, the better it works. As you continue to defer or complete goals, Google Calendar will learn and choose the optimal times in the future. The new Goals feature marks the 10-year anniversary of Google Calendar, and according to The New York Times, Google is also launching another feature that helps two people in the same company find convenient meeting times, with the use of a “software agent.” The features will be rolling out today — just keep an eye out for updates to your iOS or Android Google Calendar app.

Facebook is testing a massive change to your news feed

In a move that could be the biggest thing to happen to the Facebook news feed since it was introduced, it appears the social network is quietly testing a massive revamp that will add a lot more news to the feed. As seen in screenshots that surfaced on Twitter on Friday morning, Facebook is experimenting with a new layout on mobile that highlights multiple news sections, with topics such as World & U.S., Sports and Food. However, the primary (and presumably default) section is still the classic news feed we're accustomed to seeing. Facebook confirmed toMashable that it's testing the new, sectioned news feed, in addition to the current format, though it's unclear if the feature will ever get an official launch. SEE ALSO: Google is quietly testing trending topics section for mobile search While the feature being tested isn't entirely new — we've seen some versions of topic-focused feeds in the past on iOS — the format revealed in the latest Android-based screenshots haven't quite been seen before. "People have told us they’d like options to see more stories on Facebook around specific topics they’re interested in," a Facebook spokesperson said via email. "So we have been testing a few feeds for people to view more and different stories from people and Pages based on topic areas." Image: Mashable/Tom Critchlow The sections appear at the bottom of the screen, accessible by tapping or swiping left or right. After tapping one of the sections, such as World & U.S. News, the news feed updates to news articles that are related to the topic. In theory, this news reader-style approach takes users to all of the news they care about, housed in one massive hub. It would also certainly encourage users to get more news from Facebook rather than other sources like Twitter or Google News. “There’s a lot more content now with multiple feeds, instead of one,” Tom Critchlow, a marketing consultant who posted images of the revamped feed to Twitter, toldMashable. “As for the news and sports feeds, they have posts from my friends too and it feels very much more like a news aggregator rather than a personal space.” There's also a tool to edit which feeds you'd like to see — meaning if you weren't into Sports, you can remove it from the categories and include things like Music or Animals & Pets instead. Out of the gate, however, all topics are turned on by default, Critchlow said. Critchlow, who saw the feature on his Moto X, says the article news feed also includes a prompt to add people he doesn’t know as Facebook friends. “This feels like a huge departure from the traditional Facebook model,” he said. “There's no ‘two friends in common’ label or anything like that. Perhaps there's some intelligence behind the scenes but nothing immediately obvious.” “I can't help but see a lot of Twitter ties here, such as turning the default feeds into places you go to get news with third-party content, while Facebook Groups, Instagram and Messenger places would be where you share personal content,” Critchlow said.Lance Ulanoff contributed to this report.

John Elliott to Change Corporate Name

John Elliott is paring down.
After seven seasons, the buzzy men’s designer is eliminating the + Co. from his company’s official corporate name.
“It seems like such a silly thing,” he said.
What’s ironic is that his mother “relentlessly pounded into my head growing up that what’s wrong with my generation is that it was all about me, me, me. So what do I do but go and start a company under my own name.”
Although his mom might have disapproved, Elliott has caught the attention of key retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York and Saks with his youthful athletic-inspired aesthetic.
He said during the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s in July, Elliott was featured in Bergdorf’s windows and the brand name just read: John Elliott. “So we collectively realized we should drop the ‘+ Co.’,” he said. “It really was a mouthful.”
So starting next month, all of the line’s branding — its label, its Web site — will just read John Elliott.
Elliott, who started the company with his best friend and business partner Aaron Lavee in the spring of 2012, said the brand now counts around 50 retail accounts worldwide as well as a strong e-commerce business.

Bill Maher Thinks GOP Should Listen To Pope Francis On Climate Change

Bill Maher praised Pope Francis’ views on climate change on “Real Time” Friday night.

While admitting to have “mixed feelings” about the pope, the host did appreciate his views on this particular topic, especially in contrast to those held by many Republican representatives in Congress.

“I think it’s just awesome that this pope took on this issue,” Maher said. “I love that Boehner invited him to talk to Congress, and there he was the Grandmaster Flash of crazy non-evidentiary nonsense, lecturing the Republicans on reality.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher discussed British Prime Minister David Cameron, Kim Davis and Josh Duggar.

‘Whiteness Goggles’ Set Out To Change How You See Cultural Appropriation

Having a hard time understanding the meaning of appropriation? Take a look at Portland-based artist Roger Peet’s handy “Whiteness Goggles” series.

In the images he created for the series, the history of violence and oppression endured by people of color quite literally becomes the backdrop for the quirky styles and awesome music of white people. Take for example his biting ode to Miley Cyrus. In the image above, she twerks before a crowd of armed policemen in Ferguson, Missouri. In another, Katy Perry poses in a geisha costume in front of an exploding atomic bomb.

“All of the people shown engaging in acts of cultural appropriation … are what you would call white,” Peet explained to The Huffington Post. “Behind them, in the red, is the rest of what whiteness means: the daily violence and brutality of a world system that is bent on turning everything — every sacred grove, every deep note, every singular moment — into an object of value for speculators.”

However, if you’re at all disturbed by the violence and suffering visualized in the background imagery, Peet provides a cheeky solution. Simply slip on a pair of his “Whiteness Goggles,” the supplementary part of the project pictured below, and watch as all the nitty gritty backdrop details fade from view. What a cute kimono, Katy!

“Discussing [cultural appropriation] opens fault lines within groups of people,” Peet said, describing the inspiration for his work, “and reveals some fundamental differences in the ways different people see the world as a result of their contexts of race, class, gender and power. Appropriation is something I think about a lot, because I think it’s a singular way to understand some of the more insidious and destructive ways that capitalism works.”

Specifically, Peet, who himself is white, is referencing what he claims is capitalism’s ability to spin lives, stories, traditions, even suffering, into profitable goods. “Capitalism invented whiteness in order to create a class of people that could parasitize the rest of the world,” he continued. “A people with no connection to history, divorced from place and context, engines of pure abstraction — which is what Capitalism is all about; the conversion of the complex, beautiful world into quantifiable units that can be speculated upon.”

Before embarking on this project, Peet hung 250 flyers around Portland, asking strangers to call a number and leave a voicemail discussing their thoughts on cultural appropriation. You can listen to said voicemails here.

Peet also incorporated the perspectives of what he dubbed a “critical advisory group of indigenous artists and artists of color,” including artists Sara Siestreem, Sharita Towne and Gabe Flores, who “spent much time tirelessly shooting down concepts that didn’t work, and patiently explaining why many of my ideas were deeply ignorant and ineffective.”

Nearly every news cycle brings a handful of egregious instances of cultural appropriation. Last week we saw Kylie Jenner sporting cornrows and MFA Boston promoting “Kimono Wednesdays.” For those unaware of the ignorant and hurtful ramifications of such choices, allow teenage actress Amandla Stenberg to humbly school you.

Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalizations or stereotypes where it originated but is deemed as high-fashion, cool or funny when the privileged take it for themselves,” she explained in a video released in April.

In Peet’s words: “When you put on the ‘Whiteness Goggles,’ the colonial, military and police violence that underpins casual cultural consumption disappears. This is what life is like under whiteness, within the dominant category that capitalism has created. We white people can just unsee the violence that is done in our name. We don’t have to look. When we put on the whiteness goggles, we become heroes, and all the while so many others look at us as butchers.”

“IN  // APPROPRIATE: An excavation of appropriation” is on view at Littman Gallery in Portland until July 29. The show is presented in association with artists Sara Siestreem (Hanis Coos), Camas Logue (Klamath-Modoc), Sharita Towne and Gabe Flores, who are programming additional installations in the gallery.

‘Look Of Silence’ Director On How The Film Is Sparking Change In Indonesia

Joshua Oppenheimer‘s 2013 documentary “The Act of Killing“ detailed the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s, which has been estimated to have claimed the lives of about half a million people. Now Oppenheimer is back with a follow-up film called “The Look Of Silence,” which is enabling Indonesians to finally address horrors their country has yet to recover from.

“‘The Look Of Silence’ has, I’m humbled to say, helped catalyze a fundamental transformation in how Indonesians are responding to the genocide and its present day terrible legacy of corruption, fear and violence,” Oppenheimer told HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd on  Thursday. “It’s helped energize a movement for truth and reconciliation and some form of justice.”

Truth and reconciliation legislation would help bring closure to many Indonesians. But the documentary takes a different approach to exposing the genocide.

“The Look Of Silence” follows one family of survivors’ tragic discovery of how their son was murdered in 1965 and who his killers were. The film documents the family’s youngest son, Adi, as he confronts his brother’s killers. Oppenheimer explained the effect the documentary is having in the country at its center.

“Indonesians through the film are acknowledging how torn the social fabric of the country is, and how urgently truth and reconciliation are needed,” Oppenheimer said. “And the government, in response to this debate the film has raised, has now introduced a truth and reconciliation bill. Woefully inadequate, but a tremendous start in a way.”

Watch Oppenheimer discuss his moving documentary in the video above, and click here to watch his full HuffPost Live conversation.

Gucci’s Chime For Change Teams up With Global Citizen

In an effort to raise awareness about girls’ and women’s issues around the globe, the Gucci-led Chime For Change has secured a long-term partnership with Global Citizen, a group striving to end extreme poverty by 2030.
To that end, Gucci and Chime For Change have signed on as the presenting partners for this year’s Global Citizen Festival that will be held on Sept. 26 in New York on Central Park’s Great Lawn. Thousands are expected to catch performances by Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam and Coldplay.
Beyoncé will be right at home, and not just because she and Jay Z live in TriBeCa. In 2013, she cofounded Chime for Change with Salma Hayek to help raise funds and awareness for girls’ and women’s empowerment with a focus on education, health and justice. Through crowdfunding, the group has raised more than $ 7.3 million to support 409 projects in 86 countries through 144 nonprofit partners.
Never one to shirk the spotlight, Beyoncé helped launch the partnership with Global Citizen with an announcement video. Her cohort Hayek noted that Chime for Change and Global Citizen were both started “with the idea that individuals have a significant role to play in creating global change.” She said, “This partnership will reach millions

8 Facts That’ll Change How You View ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ According To Alyson Hannigan

For everyone who thinks they know everything about “How I Met Your Mother,” prepare to be lawyered.

Alyson Hannigan, otherwise known as Lily Aldrin, has been busy since the show ended a little more than a year ago. She’s had her hands full with being a mom, has a role in a new film called “Modern Love” and she’s even working with Ball Park’s Finest hot dogs, which she did admit, though she “usually” doesn’t try to brag, looked so good after she cooked them over a campfire that they wouldn’t even need a filter on Instagram.

During a short reprieve from her busy schedule, Hannigan took some time to chat with The Huffington Post about some behind-the-scenes stories from “HIMYM.” Prepare yourself: they might change the whole way you look at the show.

1. The cast talked about having an intervention for all of their puns.

Image: Netflix

When asked if the cast had any interventions that didn’t make the show, Hannigan said, “We talked about needing an intervention for ourselves to stop making so many puns. We would just pun for hours and hours and hours. It was great, but we were like, ‘We might have a problem,’ but we enjoyed it.”

The puns all started when a guest star mentioned the magazine Cat Fancy, Hannigan added: “We started having cat puns, and we had an afternoon of punning anything about cats. Fancy that!”

2. Alyson Hannigan’s real kid was fired from the show.

One of Hannigan’s kids was slated to play Lily and Marshall’s second child, but then she got some disappointing news. “They fired my kid from that role. She was gonna be the baby, but [producer] Carter Bays was like, ‘Nope. She’s too old,’ and she got replaced,” Hannigan said.

“I was like, ‘You fired my child. First of all that’s ageism. I don’t think you’re allowed to fire her because she’s too old,'” she joked.

3. The Cockamouse was real.

Image: PopSugar

The Cockamouse was the mysterious hybrid creature that Marshall and Lily found in their apartment, and though it seems like something someone made up, like the “South Park” monster ManBearPig, it turns out this was based on a real story.

“Yes, that is based on a story that happened to [producer] Kourtney Kang in New York in an apartment she lived in,” says Hannigan. She continued, “They were not sure if it was a cockroach or a mouse. And they’re pretty convinced it must’ve been both and it did fly away.”

To that, HuffPost responded, “Are you freaking kidding me?” Hannigan said, “I don’t think it flew out of the window, but it flew.”

4. The cast originally wanted Victoria to be the mom.
himym

“Early on, I wanted Victoria to be the mom,” Hannigan said. “I guess Carter later said had we got canceled she would’ve been the mom. But, you know, somebody great would come on [the show] and we would be like, ‘Yeah, we want her to be the mom,’ so it was sort of just like whoever was on for a long period of time. We’re like, ‘Let her be the mom. Let her.’ We just loved everybody.”

5. Some of the cast knew early on that the mom would die.

Image: Giphy

Actor Josh Radnor was told about the major “HIMYM” finale twist during Season 1 of the show and Hannigan actually found out early as well. They had to film a lot of reactions for Ted Mosby’s kids early in the series that would then air in later seasons, the actress said, and after that some “whisperings” started getting out that the series would end with the mom’s death.

“I knew that was the case,” said Hannigan. “I didn’t know who the mom was going to be, but I did know that the reason he was telling all these stories is because she passed away, which was very sweet.”

6. Producers were worried Alyson Hannigan and Cristin Milioti looked too similar.
180792549

Hannigan says the whole process of finding the right actress to play the mom was “very secretive” and caused some suspicion around set when trailers that would “never be locked” suddenly were. Hannigan says she first met the mother, Cristin Milioti, in a makeup trailer because producers wanted to see how the pair looked side by side.

“They wanted to look at us next to each other to see if they were going change her hair or something because they were a little worried that we looked similar, so I had to go stand next to her and we had some people look at us together,” she said.

7. Alyson Hannigan was the reason Lily never had a musical number.

Image: Giphy

Each of the main cast members on “HIMYM” had a musical number except for Lily — and it turns out there was a good reason for that.

“I begged them not to make me,” said Hannigan. “Yeah, singing has never been something that I wanted to do publicly. It’s actually like a phobia. I know it sounds weird, but it has always been that way. And then I find myself in these shows that want to do musicals, and I’m like, ‘Noooooo!'”

Hannigan says she has gotten better when it comes to singing, but she’s “not gonna be dropping an album anytime soon.”

8. If it was up to Jason Segel, “HIMYM” would have a Hanukkah reunion show.

A photo posted by Jason Segel (@jasonsegel) on

The actress told HuffPost she’d definitely be into a “HIMYM” reunion and that Jason Segel was actually coming up with some ideas during the finale.

“Jason was pitching some really funny specials, like a Hanukkah special and all these things with Carter. It was quite funny… Carter said we could do eight Hanukkah specials. One for each night. I’d be up for it,” she said.

In the words of Barney Stinson, that sounds pretty legen …

Exclusive: This Documentary on Plus-Size Models Will Change the Way You Think About Your Body

Plus-size fashion is having more than a moment, it’s on the brink of a revolution—and models are taking on a leading role.

From Ashley Graham‘s Sports Illustrated ad to Candice Huffine‘s Pirelli Calendar slot, the community has been on the fashion industry’s lips all year. In the midst of such pronounced media attention, producer and former model Jessica Lewis is getting ready to debut Straight/Curve, a documentary that delves into the world of plus-size modeling.

“This generation of models is ready to usher in a new definition of beauty—one that is all inclusive and supports positive body ideals and self acceptance,” said Lewis, who has spent over 15 years as a straight-size and plus-size model. “The fashion industry needs to be reflective and representative of the diversity that exists in present day society.”

Straight/Curve, set to release next summer, aims to examine and redefine the beauty standards put forth by the fashion industry, as they relate to the plus-size fashion. Most importantly, it will be talking about issues often pushed aside. Multiple people will be speaking about sample sizes and how adding a size 14 into circulation will help get diversely sized models in magazines. Agents will be talking about their move towards eliminating plus-size boards and placing all models together. Models will be talking about making plus-size inclusion a non-event in the media.

Straight-Curve-Models

Clockwise from top left: Eva Kay, Natalie Torres, Jessica Lewis, Sarah Hartshorne, and Sabina Karlsson being interviewed for Straight/Curve.

The film is the most insider look at the industry so far, going behind the scenes of New York’s plus-size fashion industry, with a focus on top models, agents, clients, and photographers. The trailer is already loaded with power players, but there are some top models being kept a surprise… So far, we know it will follow industry influencers, including Kate Dillon, Sophie T. Simmons, and Jennie Runk, among others (including this Glamour writer!).

Overall, Straight/Curve aims to expose the complex relationship between the fashion industry, mainstream media, and body image in society. “When, how, and why did size zero become the norm when two thirds of women are considered ‘plus-size’ sitting between a size 10 to 14?” Director Jenny McQuaile told Glamour. “Our documentary will examine this question. There’s always been a complex relationship between the fashion industry, the media, and body image and we’re finally making a film that will investigate that.”

Here’s en exclusive look at the trailer:

Working Parents and the Welfare State: Family Change and Policy Reform in Scandinavia

Working Parents and the Welfare State: Family Change and Policy Reform in Scandinavia

The mass entry of women into the labor market, the decline of the male breadwinner norm and the rise of the dual-earner family have all profoundly transformed the societies of the Western industrialized world. This book argues that childcare has become increasingly defamilized or collectivized as mothers have joined the labor market, causing significant impact on welfare policies. As a result, the complex relationship between family change and policy reform calls for a rethinking of the relationship between the welfare state, labor markets and working parents. Rather than concentrating on the changing models of motherhood, Leira advocates the need to consider the effects of the gendered division of work and welfare on fathers'' opportunities to be supported as carers for children.

Will Photo Sharing Change the Wedding Industry

2015-06-20-1434832533-3148158-IMG_4219.PNG.png

I often say that I’m glad I got married before I knew anything about weddings and that I hope I stop working with weddings long before my kids get married.

I got married in 2002 having only looked at a handful of wedding magazines. Through a strange twist of fate, a few years later I was part of the wedding world, writing about weddings, giving out wedding advice, and working with wedding vendors to help them grow their business. If I’d known what I later learned about weddings when I was planning my own, I might have been paralyzed by the sheer amount of information available.

Earlier this year, I wrote what I assumed would be my last wedding article. After seven years of writing about weddings, I thought I had said everything I could say. As I’ve said here before, there’s really nothing new and unique about weddings.

Shortly after handing in the article, a friend invited me to be her “plus one” at the wedding of a mutual friend.

I was excited to go to the wedding as a guest, with no ulterior motive, no need to take notes and think about work! Before I even arrived at the wedding I downloaded the photo sharing app the couple was using.

Wedding photo sharing apps have been around for some time, but I generally stick to the social networks for sharing my photos. However, in the spirit of trying new things, I decided to download their app. I had a mixed reaction. I was unsure about the privacy settings and found it difficult to see so many photos of/from people I didn’t know throughout the evening.

Also, after so many years of working with wedding photographers, small independent business owners who rely on referrals and word of mouth for their next clients, I couldn’t help wonder how photo sharing might be changing their business.

I had to admit, I did like the immediacy and intimacy of using the app. I hadn’t been at the pre-wedding parties, but I loved seeing the photos from them. There were some inside jokes from those events mentioned at the wedding, and being able to see the pre-wedding events made me feel like I knew what was going on.

Ironically, a few days after the wedding I got a call from a former colleague now working with Snapshots, a new wedding photo sharing app. She told me what they did, which she described as “an all-in-one photography platform that brings photographers, event vendors, clients, and guests, all together.” It’s like a private cloud for the wedding where every photo, taken by the pros and the guests, gets captured. I realized that Snapshots addressed the exact concern I had for how all this guest photo-sharing was affecting professional photographers. Snapshots benefits couples because now they don’t have to go chasing down friends’ photos and hashtags, and they get to see some of their photographer’s photos right away instead of waiting weeks or months for proofs.

Full disclosure, my former colleague was calling in part to see if I might consider working with Snapshots. So, suddenly, I’m back to thinking about working with weddings again. One of the things I never liked was the way wedding blogs seem to set couples and vendors against each other. So many articles are written as though all couples are cheap and all vendors are trying to cheat them. Truth be told, there is a lot of both in the wedding industry, but what if professionals and money saving changes could work together? Contrary to my previous statement, would that be something new in the world of weddings?

Rather than cutting the photographer out of the process, or making couples and guests feel like they’re sneaking around the professional photographer, Snapshots puts the professional photographer front and center. Photographers set the app up for couples so that everyone can share their photos, giving couples one less thing to do. Snapshots becomes the way that photographers and their clients interact with the proofs after the event.

Since going to the wedding and talking to my friend I find myself thinking about a photo from my own wedding. A photo a guest took with one of those disposable cameras we put on the tables back in the “old” days. The photo is of a friend who is no longer with us, he is holding a drink and smiling broadly.

Our photographer wasn’t crazy about the disposable cameras, he didn’t want to have people in the way taking photos he was trying to take, but that silly snapshot is every bit as important to me as the framed photo of my husband and I kissing that the photographer took. A photographer can’t be everywhere at once, and he never would have gotten that random shot of our friend. With the photo sharing apps available now, today’s couples really don’t have to worry about missing a moment like that.

So maybe I was wrong, maybe there is something new in the wedding world. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt for me to do a little work writing about weddings and wedding photos. After all, by the time my child gets around to wedding planning the newest photo sharing apps will probably be implanted in our brains.

Ten 5-Minute Habits That Can Change Your Life

Having good habits is the difference between your life being an easy, smooth-sailing adventure, and it being a train wreck. Why? Because good habits allow us to keep the little things under control so that we can effectively handle the big things. With good habits, we are able to navigate life’s obstacles with ease. And they make life generally more pleasant.

The habits listed below aren’t time consuming. They simply should be part of your everyday routine. So here are some good, quick habits that you can do each day to make your life easier and more enjoyable.

1. Make Your Bed: There is something demoralizing about returning home from a long day of work and looking at an unmade bed. Let’s face it. An unmade bed is depressing. It says, “I am so disorganized, I don’t even have 1.5 minutes to clean up after myself in the morning.” It also makes your bedroom look like a brothel, but not in a sexy way, just in a dirty, sad way. When you walk into your bedroom and the bed is made, you’ll feel like you at least have the basics of life under control.

2. Floss Daily: Yes, flossing sounds boring, but there are a zillion reasons to do it twice a day. Let’s start with your breath. If you don’t floss, no one will want to stand within 10 feet of you because your breath will smell terrible. Let’s move on to your finances. If you don’t floss, you most assuredly are going to have dental issues uncovered by insurance, and you can say goodbye to that trip to Europe. You instead will be funding your periodontist’s new boat.

3. Always Say “Thank You”: We are becoming a society that is reluctant to use manners. It seems too formal, when we just want to be casual. The problem is that gratitude is necessary to inspire others to want to interact with you. You may think that people like you, but if you never thank them for what they do for you, here’s a news flash: They are just tolerating you. Moreover, if you don’t say “thank you,” no one is going to want to help you when you are in a real bind, e.g. stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire and no spare.

4. Leave Early: A good rule of thumb is that it typically will take you longer to get somewhere than you anticipate. So always leave five minutes earlier than necessary. That way you aren’t destroying your karma by cursing out the accident victim on the side of the road whose car has been totaled, while you are stuck behind rubberneckers and late for your meeting.

5. Make Your Own Coffee: I love Starbucks more than anyone, but spending $ 2.00 on a cup of black coffee when you can make your own at home for about 27 cents is silly. Paying more than necessary for things is a bad habit. We should always be careful of how we spend our money, even if we are as rich as Bill Gates. Now buying a $ 2.00 cup of coffee makes sense if I am going to sit down and experience the ambience of being in a coffee house. Then I am spending 27 cents on coffee and $ 1.73 on ambience. That is OK. But if I grab a $ 2.00 cup of coffee and run out the door, I’ve just wasted $ 1.73. Wasting money is not going to get you anywhere in life (see “flossing”).

6. Tip Generously: Use the money you’ve saved by flossing and making your own coffee to tip service people properly. Being in a service profession is hard work. Service people not only provide a service, but they have the added pressure of having to interact with a million different personalities. Their work is not for the faint of heart. The least you can do as a consumer is to make someone’s day by tipping them generously for a job well done. And then you can spend your day knowing that you voluntarily did the right thing for another human being.

7. Don’t Leave Dirty Dishes in the Sink: Having a kitchen filled with dirty dishes isn’t just about being messy. Filthy dishes are a magnet for bugs (fruit flies, roaches, etc.). I like bugs, but they need to live outdoors, not in my kitchen. If you get in the habit of doing your dishes immediately after using them, you’ll save the money that you otherwise would be handing over to an exterminator to subsidize his new boat.

8. Leave Every Room Better Than When You Entered It: As you go through your house or apartment, tidy up as you pass through each room. You will be amazed how much easier it is to keep your environment organized if you do a little bit at a time. That may sound anal retentive, but it really is about living in a beautiful space. No matter where we live, we have the choice to either create a beautiful space or a mess. You will feel better and be happier if you live in beauty, so why not do the small things necessary to make that happen?

9. Compliment Others: Just as we are reluctant to say “thank you,” we seem to be turning into a society that is averse to paying a compliment. Encouraging others is an important skill. And it isn’t time consuming. Paying a compliment merely involves the decision to vocalize all those thoughts we have during the day that we don’t say out loud. How often do you notice someone’s haircut or blouse but don’t tell them it looks great? How often do you think, “Wow, they did a great job on that project,” but forget to mention it to them? When we authentically compliment others, our relationships improve, and we feel better about ourselves by having acted kindly.

10. Make Sure Your Transportation Is Always Ready: We all have to get to places on time and safely. So it is important that whatever you use for transportation is ready. That means making sure your gas tank is always above half full. That means making sure your public transportation card has enough money on it at all times. That also means that if you are relying on a cab, you call for one well ahead of time.

It is funny how if we accomplish the little things, everything else in life seems to run smoother. We feel better about ourselves, we have more stability in our relationships, our homes are more pleasant to be in, we are healthier, and we are under less stress generally. When we implement good habits, life more easily falls into place.

Meet Anastasiya, one of the most adorable little humans we’ve ever seen.

The two-and-a-half-year-old Moscow-based cutie has built quite the Instagram following, most likely due to her baby blue eyes and stylish outfits. The account is run by her mother, Anna Bakhireva, and features photos of the tot in beautiful silk scarves, stylish top knots and teeny tiny sneakers.

While it’s easy to assume that little Anastasiya is a model, she isn’t and she isn’t even that interested in fashion … yet. However, Bakhireva did tell us her daughter’s one weakness: shoes. “She wear[s] Hunters inside the home or her small Uggs in the middle of summer.” Looks like this is a girl after our own hearts.

Check out some of our favorite snaps of Anastasiya below, and tell us you aren’t melting over all the cuteness.

Agents of Destiny (Agents of Change #3)

In the pulse-pounding conclusion to Guy Harrison’s sci-fi action-thriller trilogy, Calvin Newsome and Elena Jimenez have uncovered the Agency of Influence’s secret weapon in its quest to regain-or in this case, ensure that it never loses-its control of the powerful relic, the Arrowhead of the Seminole. Newsome and Jimenez travel back in time to the year 2000 to carry out two objectives meant to ensure a more peaceful civilization and turn the tables on the A of I: protect Calvin’s then-teenaged counterpart and kill Lasse Gantert, the agency’s nefarious executive director obsessed with finding and killing the boy. When Gantert proves to have more power than has been revealed, and in an era in which the Agencies of Influence and Justice are still imbued with the powers of the Arrowhead, Calvin and Elena find the deck stacked against them. Unbeknownst to them, Ronni Lee and Astrid Krueger, motivated by separate desires, wait in the shadows for their opportunity to assist the two heroes in their quest to end Gantert’s reign of terror.

Agents of Change: 5 Forward Thinkers You Need To Know

2015-05-25-1432592092-7061577-famous.jpg

They walk among us–those agents of change. Sometimes, we just need to be reminded of who they are. Take note of five luminous entities that strive to make the world a better place.

The F*** It Duo
Here’s one to savor. They said F**k It to their jobs and moved to Italy years ago and in 2005, they created their first F**k It Retreat. Meet Mr. and Mrs. F**k It, John Parkin and Gaia Pollini (pictured above). Ten years have passed and since that time, the couple birthed the first F**k It Book (“F**k It: The Ultimate Spiritual Way”/ 2008/ Hay House). Additional F**k It literary siblings emerged. The books have been translated into 22 languages and have sold more than 400,000 copies. Workshops, retreats, one-on-one counseling, e-courses, and expanded F**k Its in London and Ireland have risen out of the fertile soil of the duo’s F**k It imaginations. And then, in 2011, The Hill That Breathes (in Urbano, Italy), the fabulous F**k It locale, won Best European Retreat (Natural Health). The secret to this couple’s undeniably unique success? F**k if I know. Well, I do. Somewhat. It’s two words–and not those, by the way. It’s these two: Let Go. Or, in this case, a more nuanced practice in the art of letting go by using a unique therapeutic tool: Profanity. Relax, it’s not all swear words and then nirvana happens–not really. Although the couple’s modality tends to lean toward being über fun if not laughter provoking. What was it a yogi once told me: “An anxious mind cannot exist in a relaxed body.” The point is this: transformation may occur when you relax first, and then turn toward that thing you are so fretting over, breathe and embrace it–by saying F*** It of course. There’s more to it, but you get the picture. Regardless, when you’re on a mission to locate agents of change near and far, like I am, it’s a treat to find these two doing so well, one F-Bomb at a time.

Lynne McTaggart and The Intention Experiment
McTaggart, a best-selling author, researcher and lecturer, is renowned for how well she creates a bridge between science and spirituality. Her books, “The Bond,” “The Field,” “What Doctors Don’t Tell You,” and “The Intention Experiment,” each, on some level, rise beyond pedestrian trinket-acquiring “spirituality” and suggest that there is a more powerful field of energy within us and around us; that we are far more powerful and connected to each other than we were led to believe. But it’s McTaggart’s Intention Experiment which continues to draw significant interest. It finds the author/lecturer overseeing unique intentions en masse on the web, which have been called one of the largest mind-over-matter trials ever undertaken. By inviting like-minded souls together who can hold a singular vision for, say, peace in a certain region, can peace then be experienced in that region? That’s the thrust behind the Intention Experiment–harnessing the intentions of thousands of participants on a specific topic. McTaggart first chronicled all this in her book of the same name, asking: “if we are connected, can our thoughts and intentions affect and change the world and things ‘out there?'” Her compelling evidence suggests that the answer is, indeed, yes. Imagine then, what could happen if the entire populace of, say, New York City held a glorious intention for a set amount of time? What effect could that have? A powerful one me thinks.

Polish Heritage Festival, Belmont, California
Poland has been making major headlines over the last nine months. Where to begin? There’s the country’s surprising economic boom and recent election–conservative challenger Andrzej Duda defeated the incumbent, Bronislaw Komorowski. And lest we forget the significant anniversary markers in 2014 and 2015–the former commemorated the 75th anniversary of the German and Russian invasion of Poland, as well as the Katyn massacre; the latter the mass deportation of Polish citizens by Stalin. A number of Polish organizations have been paying tribute to their heritage as well as their fallen comrades over the last year especially, and while each year ushers in a crop of Polish festivals throughout the Bay Area, this year, for the first time, the Polish community is being asked to come together for a larger event to be held in Belmont, California. This will mark the first ever collaborative event organized by several Polish groups. Co-sponsors include Polish Society of California/PNA Lodge 7, The Polish Club, San Francisco, Łowiczanie Polish Folk Ensemble of San Francisco and The Polonian Cultural and Pastoral Center (PCPC) in Sacramento. There is also an emphasis on the importance of the Polish-American Congress, which strives to meet the challenges facing Polish-Americans. Dancing, Polish cuisine, history and much more are expected to converge at the May 30 outing, but what stands out significantly here is the solidarity emanating from the groups that are bringing the event to fruition, especially at a time when Poland is wonderfully newsworthy. Village Yoga, Santa Cruz, California
As an author, travel writer and cultural moderator, I travel across the country for work on numerous occasions. I always make a point of dipping in to a yoga studio wherever I am. I have found some marvels in the likes of Bloomington, Indiana, and Kansas City, Missouri, and in an around California and then some. With thousands of yoga studios around the country, it’s challenging to pick just one that stands out. But I did find one that flies to the top of the list for any summer travelers out there, and anyone who might be interested in knowing what makes a business really thrive. So, what makes this Bikram Yoga portal in Santa Cruz, California--a mecca town for yoga studios by the way–rise above the others? What about the popular Funky Door in San Francisco? Or Chicago’s 105F, which offers a spirit-enhancing Gong Bath from time to time? Or any others for that matter? The answer rests in the title perhaps and, to me, it hearkens back to the old saying: “It takes a village.” Founded by Sally Adams and Amy Mihal in early 2001–the two women had big followings at San Francisco’s popular Global Yoga, founded by the remarkable Mary Jarvis–the studio has evolved into a vibrant mini community center on some level, with workshops, body work, coaching, nutrition, skin care and, well, plenty of yoga. Beyond its Bikram offerings, there are Vinyasa classes, as well as Yin/Restorative, a silent class and meditation. All that is good, however the main thing that stands out here is how well the owners nurture their clientele and, without much effort it seems, lure them in to participate in their ever-expanding enterprise that trickles back into the community. The works of local artists and photographers can often be seen on the walls. Locals are also invited to speak at workshops–think Oprah’s Soul Sunday series in a more relaxed environment. Encouragement abounds. You feel it the moment you walk in the door. And let’s face it, for any of us who are spiritually inclined and have done something like yoga or meditation, it doesn’t take much to actually pick up on the vibe of a place. Robert Holden / Shift Happens
Folks may recall Holden’s PBS special Shift Happens! or his two BBC-TV docs on happiness. An author of numerous books–“Happiness NOW!”, “Shift Happens!”, “Holy Shift!” and his latest “Life Loves You,” co-written with “You Can Heal Your Life” maven Louise Hay, Holden’s approach to living a more balanced, vibrant life has been well received, to say the least. His book “Shift Happens” morphed into a popular weekly Hay House Radio show, which has now attracted an impressive posse of motivational speakers and new thought agents–from Esther Hicks and Dorene Virtue to Norman Shealy and Caroline Myss. The intention here is offer listeners an opportunity to tap into their own power more fully and step into life in new ways, creating a remarkable transformation. Change they say, is not often easy, but for those us out there that want shift to occur, it’s refreshing to know that we don’t have to go at it alone. Here’s to Holden’s thoughtful approach and the impact it generates.
