Melania Trump’s Parents Become U.S. Citizens as Trump Administration Targets Legal Immigrants

First Lady Melania Trump‘s parents became naturalized United States citizens on Thursday, PEOPLE confirms.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Slovenian immigrants in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony in New York City, the Associated Press reported. The husband and wife — a former car dealer and a former textile factory worker, respectively — had been living in the United States as permanent residents.

The couples’ lawyer, Michael Wildes, did not specify the length of time the Knavses have been living in the United States, according to the AP. Under United States law, permanent residents must be in the country for at least five years in order to apply for citizenship.

Wildes told reporters outside a Manhattan federal building on Thursday that the Knavses’ citizenship process was “no different” from anyone else’s.

“The dialogue we are having on immigration, this is an example of it going right,” Wildes added.

Wildes confirmed to PEOPLE that the Knavses became citizens on Thursday, but declined any further comment. The first lady’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While President Donald Trump‘s parents-in-law were successful in obtaining citizenship, his administration is seeking to make citizenship more difficult to obtain for both undocumented and legal immigrants.

In January, Trump proposed ending most family-based immigration and replacing it with a system prioritizing skilled immigrants. He has also recently said he’s looking to terminate a visa lottery program for people from countries under-represented in the U.S. This plan would limit immigrants like the first lady to sponsoring only spouses and underage children, as opposed to parents and other adult family members.

Throughout his tenure in the White House, Trump has upheld his promise to crack down on immigration. Last month, he released memos that make denying visa applications easier.

The memos “are intended to further restrict and discourage much-needed legal immigration,” Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance, told AXIOS. “This abrupt change in policy will have the perverse effect of discouraging businesses from having work performed in the U.S. — a highly undesirable outcome for all workers, businesses and the economy as a whole.”

Trump has not commented on the Knavses’ citizenship.

The Pop-up Economy: Citizens of Humanity, Janessa Leone Partner at The Platform

Call it a pop-up economy. Perhaps a combination of retail uncertainty, high rents and fickle shoppers, the pop-up shop may soon need to change its definition as more and more of them appear in Los Angeles, and persist longer than the intended period. But the concept has not worn out its welcome at The Platform, the hipster retail collective in Culver City, Calif., which from the get-go has welcomed these “temporary” shops along with permanent ones.
One of the first to open there two years ago, The Edit by Freda Salvador and Janessa Leone, a partnership between the independently owned shoe brand and hat brand, respectively, has graduated to permanent status and is welcoming a pop-up of its own, with L.A.-based premium denim brand Citizens of Humanity.
The tie-up, which opens May 17, marks the first time The Edit has incorporated apparel items into its store, which necessitated bringing in some new fixtures and dressing rooms along with incorporating the jeans on the existing shelves with accessories.

Citizens of Humanity Founder Launches New Line

Jean Atelier is a new denim-based ready-to-wear collection from Citizens of Humanity founder Jerome Dahan and designer Noam Hanoch. Launching at Barneys New York and FWRD Elyse Walker for fall 2017, the collection includes trousers, French lace tops, draped dresses, outerwear as well as elevated and embellished tailored denim shirts, jumpsuits, skirts and jeans.
Dahan and Hanoch worked together for 10 years at Citizens of Humanity before Hanoch launched a collection under his own name, which eventually shuttered. Working on a higher-end denim line was always their goal when they were together at Citizens, but they were hemmed in by the constraints of the contemporary market at the time. For the past year they’ve been working, along with Dahan’s wife Elsa, the brand manager, on Jean Atelier.
“Jean Atelier is more directional creatively and has a much sexier aesthetic [than Citizens of Humanity],” Hanoch said. “We felt like the premium denim space has become very saturated and price-point driven, so we saw a tremendous opportunity in the market for a designer denim brand with a strong point of view.”
“In the last few years the denim market became very oversaturated with basics,” Elsa said. “The retail market wasn’t great in the last few years,

The Perfect Response To ‘Are Men Second-Class Citizens?’

You can spend a lifetime trying to find the perfect gif to deploy in response to sheer ignorance about women’s rights.

Today, we can thank Guardian Australia columnist Van Badham for supplying us with one.

The writer appeared on Australian morning show “Sunrise” on Saturday, where hosts were conducting a deep-dive into the ever-pressing topic, “Are men second-class citizens?”

The statement that prompted Badham’s eye roll of the century was “left feminism is essentially selfish.” Former Australian politician Mark Latham made that remark while trying to characterize Badham as only concerned about problems that affect educated, privileged women — even though she covers class inequality at The Guardian. (She also wrote a comprehensive response to Latham’s remarks, which you can read here.)

But her sublime expression is nothing if not versatile when confronting sexist idiocy.

For example:

“Why don’t you want kids?”

“Are you on your period?”

“Women are just voting for Hillary/Bernie because she’s a woman/they want boys to like them.”

“You’d be so much prettier if you smiled more.”

Try it yourself! In the meantime, the entire segment can be viewed below:

Imaginary Citizens

Imaginary Citizens

From the colonial period to the end of the Civil War, children’s books taught young Americans how to be good citizens and gave them the freedom, autonomy, and possibility to imagine themselves as such, despite the actual limitations of the law concerning child citizenship. Imaginary Citizens argues that the origin and evolution of the concept of citizenship in the United States centrally involved struggles over the meaning and boundaries of childhood. Children were thought of as more than witnesses to American history and governance-they were representatives of “the people” in general. Early on, the parent-child relationship was used as an analogy for the relationship between England and America, and later, the president was equated to a father and the people to his children. There was a backlash, however. In order to contest the patriarchal idea that all individuals owed childlike submission to their rulers, Americans looked to new theories of human development that limited political responsibility to those with a mature ability to reason. Yet Americans also based their concept of citizenship on the idea that all people are free and accountable at every age. Courtney Weikle-Mills discusses such characters as Goody Two-Shoes, Ichabod Crane, and Tom Sawyer in terms of how they reflect these conflicting ideals.

Citizens United, Explained With Dogs

It is an antiquated rule banning cameras from the Supreme Court, when they are public proceedings affecting all Americans. John Oliver was right to challenge this seclusion from the public eye on his recent episode of Last Week Tonight when he had no choice but to dramatize courtroom proceedings with a bench of jurist dogs. Clearly a better means of public information is necessary for the highest court in the land.

Until then, here is a case that is often mentioned, though is still not clear to all: Citizens United vs. FEC, which said that corporations have the right to spend unlimited outside money in elections. Working with interviews compiled for my documentary exploring the Citizens United decision, PAY 2 PLAY, I have re-mixed the footage to include the Supreme Court of Canines.

This election cycle shows that the impacts of Citizens United are no laughing matter, with more anonymous money flowing through our elections than ever. While our campaign finance laws may have gone to the dogs, our democracy does not have to. On Election Day, use your voice at the polls, because you don’t want just any old hound dog representing your needs.
