Clinical Emergency Medicine Casebook

Clinical Emergency Medicine Casebook

Emergency Medicine is not divided into specific areas of practice. Emergency room visitors come in all shapes and sizes, at any time of day or night, with a wide range of maladies. Emergency physicians need to become experts in diverse areas of medicine and to be able to make quick and informed decisions about patient care. A cornerstone of emergency medicine training is the constant drilling and re-drilling of simulated cases and clinical scenarios. This book offers a unique yet underutilized strategy for learning: a case-based approach from real patients and actual events. Each case provides the opportunity for learning essential clinical concepts. Focused exclusively on the needs of in-training emergency physicians and nurses, the book covers more than 100 common and unusual cases in emergency medicine. The procedures have been class-tested by the Stanford/Kaiser Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

EMQs in Clinical Medicine Second Edition

EMQs in Clinical Medicine Second Edition

EMQs are a popular method of assessing how broad a knowledge of medicine an undergraduate has acquired. They can, however, be difficult to prepare for, and the best way to build understanding and confidence is with practice. Presenting 100 key EMQs covering the core areas of medicine and surgery, care had been taken by the authors to structure the questions and answers so that they reflect accurately the themes uncountered during study and, specifically, in final exams. Each subject covered is accompanied by a revision section which summarises key points and cross references them to other questions for revision purposes. Questions related to pharmacology, an area which many students find particularly challenging, are threaded throughout the book where relevant, mirroring the integrated teaching methods common to most medical schools. The second edition of EMQs in Clinical Medicine has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect medical developments, while retaining the clear and comprehensive approach and popular revision boxes of its predecessor. The authors’ first-hand experience of EMQ-based examinations, and awareness of the importance of reliable and accurate revision guides to medical students, ensure EMQs in Clinical Medicine remains and invaluable resource for all medical students undertaking the clinical part of their training, and an ideal companion during finals preparation.

Clinical Trials in Rheumatology

Clinical Trials in Rheumatology

A huge number of therapeutic studies has been published in rheumatology and clinical immunology. This number grows substantially by the year. As such, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of this multitude of studies and the ensuing therapeutic trends. Further to this, a particular study can be referred to in a variety of ways, either as a shortened version of the title or an acronym, adding to the confusion. The book Clinical Trials in Rheumatology provides a summary of the important studies in the field for easy reference. Every study is shown with name, acronym (if in existence), authors, complete citation, study design, results, and summary. An acronym finder is supplied at the beginning of the book. This book is a valuable reference tool for rheumatologists and other clinical specialties, as well as for research scientists interested in immunomodulatory and selected other drug therapies in rheumatologic diseases.

Clinical and Epidemiological Analysis for HIV-Exposed Infants in a Low Resource Setting: Evidence-Based of Pmtct Interventions

Clinical and Epidemiological Analysis for HIV-Exposed Infants in a Low Resource Setting: Evidence-Based of Pmtct Interventions

Research Paper from the year 2011 in the subject Medicine – Public Health, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Human and social studies), course: Clinical epidemiology, language: English, abstract: Definitions: focus on the advantages and disadvantage of drugs, hence their effects. This let Kenneth Rothman, 2002 to say: “outcomes research marries epidemiologic methods with clinical decision theory to determine which therapeutic approaches are the most cost-effective”. 10] This approach has lead to the concept of evidence -based medicine where sufficient proof are available to support a medical theory in disease management and promotion of various guidelines useful in clinical setting. Nonetheless, more medical and non medical conditions are still undiagnosed, under- diagnosed or wrongly diagnosed. As a consequence, extra, less cost-effective and unnecessary treatments are being prescribed. In this scenario, would the key to evidence- based medicine lie on diagnosis processes which are opaque to quantification and analysis, or on the deep-rooted knowledge of disease natural history, its transmission chain and physiopathology, or on the accuracy of diagnostic tests which have different level of interpretations according to their sensitivity or specificity? Or on prevention inputs to control the disease outcomes? In Zambia, roughly 80,000 infants are born annually from HIV infected mothers and are at risk of contracting the disease. An average of 20,000 are born with HIV each year (40%).The rate of vertical transmission varies from 15-25% in non-breastfeeding infants and double in breastfeeding ones. (Ministry of Health, National Protocol Guidelines, 2010). 14] For this research paper focused on PMTCT, we selected data for 3 years study from 2008 to 2010.This was a retrospective cohort study. The data included all pregnant women who attended ANC, those who were counselled and tested for HIV and those who delivered at the facility. Our indicators

Clinical Sports Medicine

Clinical Sports Medicine

‘Clinical Sports Medicine’ is one of McGraw-Hill Australia’s best-selling titles – next to John Murtagh’s ‘General Practice’ – and is also a most high-profile Australian title globally. The book was selected as the 2001 Book of the Year by the ‘British Journal of Sports Medicine’. Its appeal is that it is a comprehensive text on sports medicine and it adopts a broad, multi-disciplinary approach, therefore, sells well in fields such as massage therapy, physiotherapy and musculoskeletal specialties, as well as to sports physicians and sports trainers. This also means it has a broad appeal to medical students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, notably adopted on courses at Melbourne (where Peter Brukner is an associate professor), Monash, La Trobe, South Australia, Sydney and Griffith universities. Once more, as well as being a key title in the local and US medical catalogues, it is core to our growing sports medicine list. The two authors, Peter Brukner and Karim Khan, are high-profile sports physicians and academics, both having been heavily involved in the last three Olympic Games and presenting regularly overseas. Professor Brukner was the first non-American Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is an inaugural Fellow of the Australian College of Sports Medicine. Professor Khan has been based at the University of British Columbia, Canada, since 1995 and runs the authors’ website that strongly promotes the book using the cover as the main design theme, and includes abstracts that focus on sections applicable to particular disciplines.
