Denver Cheerleading Coach Who Forced Students Into Splits Will Not Face Criminal Charges

The Colorado high school cheerleading coach at the center of a police investigation after video surfaced of him forcing cheerleaders into painful splits will not face criminal charges in the incident, the Denver District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release.

According to the release, the decision not to charge Ozell Williams was made after a “detail investigation” by the Denver Police Department, which included interviews with cheerleaders, their parents and school staff.

“The video of the incident involving the injured student that has been widely disseminated is painful to watch,” District Attorney Beth McCann said in a statement. “However, after a very thorough and careful review of all of the evidence gathered in the investigation and the statements of many members of the cheerleading squad, I have concluded that the evidence does not support the filing of criminal charges.”

Continued McCann, “In order to prove a charge of criminal behavior, the case must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. There are differing opinions regarding the use of this technique of cheerleading training. While I believe the technique should not be used, that is not the standard of proof for a criminal case. Most of the cheerleading squad participated in the technique that day, and there are differing accounts of the circumstances.”

The video, reportedly filmed during Denver’s East High School cheer camp in June, showed incoming-freshman, Ally Wakefield, being held down into a splits position by fellow cheerleaders and her recently-hired coach, Williams. Wakefield excruciatingly yelled “please, stop!” multiple times in the video as Williams pushed her down further by her shoulders.

RELATED VIDEO: Denver Cheerleading Coach Under Investigation Was Also Fired from Previous Job for Forcing

After the clip went viral in August, Williams was placed on leave alongside six other administrators at the school — East Principal Andy Mendelsberg, East Athletic Director Lisa Porter, East Assistant Cheer Coach Mariah Cladis and DPS Deputy General Counsel Michael Hickman — Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg told PEOPLE in a statement.

Williams was dismissed and Principal Mendelsberg retired as a result of the controversy. The school’s athletic director, Porter, also was removed from her position, CBS News reported in August.

“The individual involved should not be a coach in high school sports and he no longer is,” said McCann in her statement supporting the decision to not pursue charges. “The principal and athletic director of the school have retired and resigned. The message should be clear that this type of technique has no place in high school cheerleading coaching. The bad judgment of the coach, however, does not constitute a prosecutable crime.”

Fendi and Coach Get Real, Grittier With Millennials in Asia

HONG KONG — Millennials are growing tired of the luxury of yore and just want to “be real” — that was the message Fendi and Coach sent out this week in Hong Kong as the two fashion houses hosted parties targeted at a younger generation.
On Thursday, Fendi took out the basement of Cosco Tower in Sheung Wan, lighting the space up in a rainbow of neon lights. There was no Champagne here, just strong vodka mixers as a “no-holds-barred” attitude permeated the party. It was the second stop after New York for the “F Is for Fendi” initiative — the dedicated online platform for Millennials the Italian house launched in February — and the event saw a cast of pan-Asian cool kids come out to party: Korean pop star Taeyang, rapper Okasian, music producer Choice 37, Shanghai-based DJ Victor Aime and Japanese designer Alisa Ueno.

Coach Commissions Artist Arthur Peña for Dallas Installation

DOWN IN DALLAS: Coach wined and dined 50 Dallas fashion and art elites, influencers and philanthropists Thursday at The Joule Hotel. The teaser for the new, expanded store, opening June 30 at NorthPark Center, was also a celebration of the brand’s commission of work by Dallas artist Arthur Peña. It was the first such collaboration for Coach, and the artist created colorful abstract murals for three branded billboard-like banners around town plus an exhibition that runs through early July in the mall. NorthPark is known for its museum-quality collection of modern and contemporary art, and Dallas is a hotbed of contemporary art collectors.
“We were trying to find a way to be locally relevant, to cut through,” said Coach North America marketing director Alexis Kirk. “We wanted to do [the artwork] in the community and then bring it back to the center.”
Dallas Contemporary exhibition director and senior curator Justine Ludwig linked Peña with the brand. “Stuart Vevers [Coach’s creative director] brings art and music together in a really beautiful way, and that’s what Arthur does in his practice,” she said, noting Peña’s openings regularly feature a band. “Thank you, Coach, for having faith in Dallas-based talent.”

James Franco Talks ‘Sleazy New York’ at Coach Breakfast

James Franco made his first appearance as the face of Coach’s forthcoming men’s fragrance wearing a navy intarsia sweater with a Space Shuttle motif — and talking about the “sleazy New York of the Seventies” and its then “burgeoning porn industry.”
The actor, whose face broke into a big smile the minute he addressed a press gathering on Monday morning in Manhattan, was referring to the yet-to-be-released HBO series “The Deuce,” in which he plays twins involved in that industry.
Coach unveiled a short commercial and print ad lensed by Steven Meisel, picturing Franco leaning against a vintage car with the Manhattan skyline in the background.
“The shoot was interesting,” Franco demurred, before sitting down to a three-course breakfast perfumed with cardamom, kumquat and geranium, which are among notes in the scent, produced under license by Inter Parfums SA.
The event fell on a special day for Victor Luis, chief executive officer of Coach Inc. “Today is my 11th anniversary at Coach,” he told the crowd, introducing Joshua Schulman, president and chief executive officer of the Coach brand, who started work that very morning and was toting a seating plan for the brand’s vast offices in a futuristic office tower at Hudson Yards.

Do You Need a Coach or Therapist?

Coaches and therapists often overlap in what they offer clients. Understanding how they differ and articulating what you need can help you decide if coaching or therapy is better for you.

2016-11-30-1480540718-4221862-omega_institute_life_coaching_therapy.jpg

There are times in life when you need something more than the support of friends and family. Perhaps you want help to break a habit or meet a goal. Or maybe you want to examine and resolve deeply personal issues with someone who will listen to you without judgment.

Whatever your motivation, it can help to talk to a professional. A UCLA study showed that when you verbalize your feelings, it makes them less intense. But who should you talk to? Would a life coach or a therapist be more appropriate?

Coaches are useful for people looking to reach a specific goal or break a habit, often in a particular area, like health or career. Therapists generally address long-term emotional issues or problems, like trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression. But these are generalities, and often a therapist may act as a coach and a coach may offer therapeutic support. The best thing you can do is get clear on your needs and goals and then do the research to find the right coach or therapist for you.

Do You Need to Climb Out of a Hole or Climb a Mountain?
The Differences Between Therapy & Coaching

In the book Coaching for Transformation, coaching is defined as “a partnership that maximizes human potential.” Coaches focus on “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential,” according to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the oldest and largest professional coaching organization. This description also fits for most therapists, too.

The American Psychological Association defines a therapist as someone who “provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental.” Which is also true of most coaches.

Richard Michaels, a Gestalt therapist and a life and executive coach, says that while both modalities “work to increase awareness: self-awareness, self-understanding, and emotional awareness…. The role of the client is more active [in coaching]. In therapy, you have more interpretation of what’s going on and more focus on your family of origin.” He describes many of his clients as high-functioning individuals who are ready to go deeper in some part of their life.

Madhu Maron, a human resources professional who now works as a life coach, says, “The [coaching] client is really longing for a change–[they have] a persistent deep, important longing,” she says. “It’s something like, I want to be healthier, get a new job, or have a better relationship. They can be very effective in certain parts of their lives, but not effective in this one area.”

Therapist and life coach Lisa Marie Bobby explains the difference this way: if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, emotional issues, or other problems that leave you feeling trapped in a hole, a therapist is probably the best person to help you climb out of it. Once you’re out of the hole and on level ground, a coach can help you climb whatever mountain you wish to climb, usually in an effort to improve your circumstances or have greater success in areas like career, relationships, or health.

Vetting a Coach or Therapist
Do Your Homework & Get Surprisingly Fast Results

Once you’ve identified if you need help getting out of the hole or are ready to climb a mountain, you’ll probably want to do some research and interview potential therapists and coaches to find someone who offers what you need. There are a wide range of therapies and coaching practices–being an informed client and asking questions up front to find the best match will save you a lot of time and money.

There are hundreds of styles of therapy, so if you don’t have the time or inclination to explore the options, you might begin with an online directory to find therapists near you or ask friends for recommendations.

Therapists refer to themselves in many different ways. To be a psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, or social worker requires an advanced degree, and these titles are regulated. If someone is calling themselves by one of these titles, you know they have received at least a master’s degree and passed licensing requirements.

The titles “therapist,” “counselor,” and “psychotherapist” are not regulated and don’t require a license. This doesn’t mean all therapists are unlicensed; many of them are. It just means anyone can call themselves a therapist, so you may need to investigate someone’s credentials if they’re billing themselves as one.

Life coaches are not required to have any training. Many coaches complete training programs, and groups like the International Coaching Federation are working to standardize credentials in the field, but currently anyone can call themselves a coach.

To find a coach, begin with an online search for coaches who focus on the area you want to address. Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Most coaches (and many therapists) work remotely with clients via phone or Skype, so location is not necessarily an issue.

Whether you decide on therapy or coaching, results often come relatively quickly. One study found that most people feel better with about 10 therapy sessions, while another said that 88 percent of therapy participants reported improvements after one visit. So while it may take you some time to find the right coach or therapist, once you do you’re likely to notice changes fast.

Gain the skills, knowledge, and inspiration you need to become a professional coach with this 10-month certification program.

Coach to Show Men’s in New York, But May Return to London

CROSSING THE POND: Stuart Vevers is making the jump from London back to New York for his next men’s show. But it may just be a one-time leap.
The creative director of Coach will show his fall men’s collection along with his women’s pre-fall line in New York on Dec. 8, a full month before London Collections: Men, where he’s shown for the past three seasons. But the British-born designer is leaving the door open to return to the British capital.
“We wanted to do something special in New York City to celebrate our new store opening on Fifth Avenue and Coach’s 75th anniversary year,” Vevers said. “I’m continuously inspired by New York City; I love that it’s romantic and tough at the same time. It’s exciting to show our men’s collection on the runway in New York City for the first time.”

But at the same time, Vevers said London is also a special place for him. “There is something exciting to me about what is happening at London Men’s and presenting in London was an opportunity for us to change the context for Coach’s new direction,” he said. “We’ve not made any decisions yet as to where we’ll show our next men’s collection.”

Coach Celebrates Opening of Regent Street Flagship

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: Following the launch of its new house on Fifth Avenue last week, Coach let the good times roll with a party to mark the opening of a Regent Street flagship on Thursday night.
Located on 206 Regent Street, next door to Stuart Weitzman (which is owned by Coach) the new 27,500 square feet space showcases the brand’s new retail concept.
Designed by creative director Stuart Vevers in collaboration with William Sofield, the shop aims to embody the concept of modern luxury and focuses on customization, with stations offering monogramming and made-to-order services.
It also highlights the brand’s playful spirit, with a metallic sculpture of Rexy the dinosaur, who stomps his way across the brand’s rtw and accessories collections, at the entrance of the store. Rexy also appears in street-facing windows, in the form of a neon pink light installation.
Dancers dressed in dinosaur costumes were the main attraction for party guests, including Kate Moss, Henry Holland, Poppy Delevingne, Erin O’ Connor and Daisy Lowe.
“It feels like a home-away-from-home because my house is filled with dinosaurs. I had a sweet chat with Stuart about it and he said that the message is embracing the child within, which is great. He

Coach Aims to Grow Men’s Accessories Business

It all began with the baseball glove.
Coach’s founders were impressed with the leather, stitching and handcraftsmanship used for the gloves that got softer and more supple with age. So with this as their inspiration, a group of leatherworkers created wallets and billfolds for men — and a brand was born.
Today, Coach is better known for its women’s leather goods, but men’s remains a sizable part of its business, accounting around $ 700 million, or 16 percent of its $ 4.2 billion in annual sales in fiscal-year 2015. That’s up from 14 percent of net sales in the 2014 fiscal year and 12 percent in 2013.
“We were originally a men’s brand,” said Diane Mahady, global head of merchandising for Coach, “and there’s no more masculine American reference than the baseball glove.”
Although she oversees all divisions, Mahady actually has a soft spot for the men’s business. She spent 12 years at Saks Fifth Avenue as a men’s divisional merchandise manager before moving on to Ermenegildo Zegna and Louis Vuitton. She joined Coach two-and-a-half years ago.
“Without question, it’s a growth area for us and we’re growing by double digits,” she said. This year, men’s will account for more than $ 700 million in sales, she said,

How A Former Shy Girl Became A Confident Career Coach

Dear readers,

Welcome! I’m a self-employed career and business coach who helps introverts clarify and thrive in their true livelihood so they can have the meaning and balance they crave. I love my work, and I can’t wait to start getting your questions for this career and business advice column for introverts.

Let’s start off this relationship with me confiding in you.

My shy girl past

I was painfully shy all through my school years. I loved to escape by reading and climbing trees. Up in a tree, I could relax and watch people, but they couldn’t see me.

When I was little, people could barely hear me speak—if I could get any words out at all. The more people demanded I speak up, the worse I felt about myself, and the more I wanted to hide and stay silent.

I grew up in a loud and extroverted family, and I didn’t understand why I felt so out of sync. I craved quiet. I almost craved invisibility as well. One time, I crawled into a refrigerator box on the patio and happily read there for hours. I was delighted that no one could find me!

And yet, I also hated invisibility. I wanted to be noticed, to be heard! I had questions to ask. I had plenty of ideas and opinions. I just had trouble saying them out loud.

I was also highly sensitive—easily rattled by noise, light, speed, heights, and, well, people. (It wasn’t until I was an adult that I discovered what “high sensitivity” was and how to work with it instead of against it.) Turns out, it often correlates with introversion.

As a result of my sensitivity and external stressors, I suffered from a lot of anxiety. I didn’t know this then; to me, swirling thoughts, stomachaches, and fear of speaking (at all) was my normal state of being.

Throughout school, I was obsessed with getting good grades, probably as a way to not rock the boat and remain invisible. But when my 11th grade English teacher assigned an oral report, I panicked! I approached the teacher after class to see if she would just give me an F so I wouldn’t have to do it. An F for me was a horrifying thought, but speaking in front of the class was worse.

She refused, and I lived with a stomachache and panicky thoughts for two weeks. At last, I eked out a passable report. I think the pounding of my heart must have been louder than my trembling quiet voice. It felt like a miracle that I survived the experience.

(My heart goes out to kids in the same situation today. Luckily, teachers are getting more information about how to help.)

Speaking got easier in college. I didn’t “grow out of shyness” as people often assume will happen; rather, I finally tuned into my passions. The more interested I was, the less I noticed my fear.

Still, I dreaded giving oral reports, and I was one of the quieter students in class. I was driven by passions, but I still wasn’t confident.

My winding career journey

After college, I wanted to save the world, and I thought teaching was the perfect outlet. Despite my fears, I took a job as a health educator.

With the help of on-the-job training and a pre-set curriculum, my speaking anxiety gradually went away! My confidence was growing. Looking back, I now understand that passion (along with support) can trump fear. That lesson has shaped my work.

Even though I had more ease and confidence with public speaking, I still found it exhausting. After far too many days ended with my head on my desk and me in tears, I quit my job without another one lined up. I quickly went through my small savings and had to get help.

I went to a career coach, who helped me understand why my last job wasn’t a good fit. What a relief it was to learn I wasn’t a freak! There was nothing wrong with me, nothing to fix—I was simply an introvert and needed to focus on my strengths.

After that turning point, I tried various roles over the years, including human resources management and web marketing. I chose work that allowed more alone time to think, and I still found ways to have a say in groups. I found my own leadership style, and my confidence grew.

Still, I had a sense that work could be more fulfilling. With much soul searching and professional career guidance, I discovered that I was happiest when using my coaching skills, and I decided that coaching was the best fit for me.

My long-term dream of self-employment started to come into focus as I imagined being a coach. I was ready to spread my wings even wider.

But are introverts good at being self-employed?

At first, I was nervous about whether I could handle things like promoting and growing a business, which are typically associated with extroversion. I simply couldn’t bring myself to promote my business in the standard extroverted way.

To my surprise, the more I did things my own way, that was aligned with me, the better things went! People were drawn to my events and services, probably because of my authenticity and non-salesy approach. My business grew.

Turns out introverts can be great at the so-called extrovert territories of leadership, self-employment, and self-promotion—if they do it their own way.

I discovered I could just show up at a networking event, without perfect words, and simply engage in meaningful conversations. No sales pitch in hand. I was just myself. No extrovert mask. No race to collect stacks of business cards.

The more I took steps that aligned with my heart and my nature, the more excited and fulfilled I felt. My work energized me. People commented that I was glowing. And that glow helped attract more clients. Being true to myself paid off. It felt like a gift from heaven.

Who I am today

People who know me today are surprised to hear that I used to be extremely shy. In fact, sometimes they don’t understand that I’m still introverted, but I am. I’m confident, and I enjoy socializing, but it has to be on my terms. I still value my alone time, when I can slow down, breathe, and listen to what my heart tells me.

Introduction to this advice column

I’m not about doling out directions such as “you should do X because I said so.” I want to help you find and do what is true for you. I can detect where things are getting off track and help nudge you back into your true path.

Above all, I want you to understand that you can earn a living and be true to yourself. I’m challenging that outdated cultural norm that says we have to become extroverted to succeed. That’s what the Quiet Revolution is about, and I’m on board.

Virginia Tech Coach Buzz Williams Is A Good Sport About Reading Mean Tweets

Buzz Williams may have lost 22 games in his first season as the basketball coach at Virginia Tech, but he certainly didn’t lose his sense of humor.

In a video he posted Monday, Williams takes a page from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and reads “mean tweets” about himself.

Some are mean, all right: “He’s got the fattest neck I’ve ever seen.”

“All my stress goes to my neck,” he jokingly replies.

Anyway, props to Williams for being a good sport.

Lloyd Percival: Coach and Visionary

Lloyd Percival: Coach and Visionary

They called him ‘Coach’, but Lloyd Percival was much more. He introduced modern track and field to Canada, produced a blueprint for radically changing the way hockey was played, built the world’s first modern fitness club, inspired and contributed to government policy on sport, and was instrumental in the success of Canada’s best amateur and professional athletes. However, he was a radical, an iconoclast, and a thorn in the side of the authorities in amateur and professional sports for almost four decades. Percival has been compared to Marshall McLuhan for his willingness “to look at things people took for granted.” Respected around the world, Percival’s controversial prescriptions for change made “the stepfather of Russian hockey” a “prophet without honour” in his homeland. The story of Lloyd Percival is the story of sport and fitness in Canada during an era of profound change, a story of the man most responsible for those changes and of his enduring legacy.
