Artist Turns Donald Trump’s Most Controversial Quotes Into Comic Book Covers

An artist is giving President-elect Donald Trump’s most outrageous comments the comic book treatment.

Cartoonist Robert Sikoryak is transforming several of the controversial and offensive statements that Trump made during the presidential election campaign into eye-catching and thought-provoking illustrations.

“The idea occurred to me right before the election,” the New York City-based artist told The Huffington Post on Saturday.  Trump had said so many outrageous things during his campaign that I wanted to catalogue them.”

“It was important to me to only use Trump’s actual quotes, I didn’t want to put any words in his mouth,” he added. “Once Trump became the president-elect, I felt I had to do it.”

Sikoryak’s work has previously appeared on the cover pages of The New Yorker magazine and the Harvard Business Review. He has also transformed Apple’s iTunes terms of service into comic parodies.

For this project, titled “The Unquotable Trump,” he has compiled the images into a mini-comic. He’s also posting them on a dedicated Tumblr page.

“The reaction has been very enthusiastic, much more so than I expected,” Sikoryak told HuffPost. “I needed to get these comics out of my system, so it’s gratifying that other people have been enjoying them.”

Check out more of his Trump-themed comic book covers below and see his other work via his website, Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter accounts.

Sexual Assault Survivor Draws Powerful Comic About Election Day

In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s win, one woman put her feelings on paper in the form of a gut-wrenching illustration.

Created by artist Amy Camber, the short comic illustrates what so many sexual assault survivors experienced during such a tumultuous and triggering campaign season. As a survivor herself, Camber told The Huffington Post that she felt compelled to create the comic.

“These past weeks have shaken me to my core,” Camber said. “Every woman I know was reeling after hearing Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women. What he said, along with his dismissal of those words as ‘locker room talk,’ reminded us every time we’ve been demeaned, treated as less-than, spoken to inappropriately, or touched without our consent.”

Over a dozen women have publicly accused Trump of sexual assault, and yet ― somehow ― our country still voted him into the highest office of power.

“It was one thing to endure this [misogyny] during the campaign but, now, this is our President-elect,” she told HuffPost. “It’s sickening. And I don’t want people to forget about what he said.”

While Camber pointed out that this comic illustrates her specific experience with assault and the triggers she faced during the election, she realizes it’s an experience many survivors share.

Now, more than ever, Camber hopes that survivors will come forward with their stories.

“In the upcoming weeks, we will be asked to suspend judgement, to wait and see what he’s ‘really like,’” Camber said. “But just as we’ve seen a rise in hate crimes and despicable acts of racism and xenophobia this past week, the damage of Trump’s campaign is already done.”

Head over to Camber’s personal website to see more of her work.

This Comic Captures The Two Types Of People In Every Relationship

In any relationship, there are two kinds of people: the one who orders the side of fries and the one who claims he or she doesn’t want any, and then promptly goes to town as soon as it arrives.

Cartoonist Adrienne Hedger of Hedger Humor self-identifies as the second type.

“I never order French fries because I think I don’t want all those fries,” she told The Huffington Post. “So I just tell my husband, ‘I’ll have a taste of yours.’ And in the moment, that’s my honest intention. Just a few — maybe five — fries. And the next thing you know, you’ve eaten half the fries.”

Hedger recently created a hilariously relatable comic that captures this all-too-common dynamic. Check it out below:

Marvel’s New ‘Spider-Man’ Comic Series Will Star Miles Morales

When Marvel’s relaunched Spider-Man comic series comes out this fall, a new face will be behind the spidey mask.

The new series, written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by artist Sara Pichelli, will relaunch with Miles Morales, a half-black, half-Latino teenager, as Spider-Man, according to the New York Daily News. Morales has appeared as a version of Spider-Man in Marvel’s offshoot Ultimate Spider-Man series since 2011, which is separate from Marvel’s larger Spider-Man universe where Peter Parker is behind the mask. When the limited comic series Secret Wars ends this summer, however, Morales will re-emerge as the official Spider-Man on the page.

Bendis, the writer and co-creator of the new Spider-Man comics wants fans to know that Morales will indeed be the main superhero and no longer an alternate version of the web-slinger. “Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk,” Bendis told the Daily News, “it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else.”

This Marvel announcement comes just days after a leaked legal licensing agreement between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment was released by Wikileaks. The document describes that one of the “core elements” of Spider-Man is that “he is a heterosexual Caucasian male.” According to Variety, the contract, which went into effect in Sept. 2011, also includes “Mandatory Spider-Man Character Traits.” One states that the character is “not a homosexual (unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual).”

Marvel and Sony declined to comment.

While Morales may not replace Peter Parker on the big screen any time soon, he has portrayed Spider-Man on the small screen. Donald Glover voiced Morales in two episodes of Disney XD’s series “Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.”

Bendis told Vulture last year that he hopes to see Morales appear as Spider-Man on the big screen one day, saying that whichever studio is in charge “should pursue it as quickly as possible.” Andrew Garfield also supported passing down the spidey suit to Morales in an interview last year. “Miles Morales was a huge moment in this character’s comic book life. And I do believe that we can do that,” Garfield told Comic Book Resources.

Mom Creates Comic To Teach 7-Year-Old Daughter To Accept Her Natural Beauty

When 7-year-old Natalie McGriff struggled to embrace her natural black beauty, her mom was the first one to encourage her to love her hair and her beautiful brown skin and to apply the confidence that comes with self-acceptance.

But it wasn’t easy.

Natalie didn’t see herself reflected on TV and among the toys she owned — and because of this lack of representation began to describe herself as “ugly,” said her mother, Angie Nixon.

Nixon was determined to teach her daughter valuable lessons on self-image and self-love.

“I started a Facebook group called ‘Natalie You Are Beautiful’ where strangers and friends could post positive affirmations for her,” Nixon told The Huffington Post. “She enjoyed reading them but it still wasn’t helping her.”

Invested in her mission, Nixon took a more creative approach. She hit on the idea of a comic book that would portray the 7-year-old as a superhero with crime-fighting afro puffs. The hero’s curly hair, a trait that Natalie found hard to accept, became her crowning glory that came with special magical powers.

Natalie was immediately on board. She gave her mom story ideas for the comic and the two made the book together.

Shortly after, the pair launched The Adventures Of Moxie Girl, a comic starring a fictional Natalie who activates the superpowers in her magical puffs to fend off book-eating monsters that attack her local library.

“I was hoping to improve and raise the self-esteem of my daughter. I also wanted to instill in her a love for reading,” Nixon said. “I wanted her to realize how powerful she is and that she shouldn’t have to change for anything.”

Nixon submitted the comic book to a crowdfunding festival in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, where attendees cast ballots on who would take home the large cash prize.

It turned out Natalie wasn’t the only one who fell in love with Moxie Girl — voters championed the idea and daughter and mother took home $ 16,400 to put towards a larger print run for the comic. The book will come out in June, Nixon announced on Instagram.

Now Natalie has much stronger self-esteem — and so does Nixon. She advises other parents to always feed their children positive affirmations and model the self-respect they want their kids to have.

“How can I tell my daughter her hair is beautiful in its natural state, if I alter mine?” she said. “I have to embrace my natural beauty before I am truly able to tell her to embrace hers.”

“We have to work on ourselves as parents first. We have to model the behavior that we want to see in our children,” Nixon said.

Comic Book Culture

What are super-devoted fans of comic books really like? What draws them together and energizes their zeal? What do the denizens of this pop-culture world have in common’this book provides good answers as it scrutinizes the fans whose profiles can be traced at their conventions, in pages of fanzines, on websites, in chat-rooms, on electronic bulletin boards, and before the racks in comic-book stores. They are a singular breed, and an absorbing interest in comic books (sometimes life-consuming) unites them. Studies have shows that the clustering, die-hard disciples of Star Trek have produced a unique culture. The same can be said of American enthusiasts of comic books. These aficionados range from the stereotypical fanboy who revels in the minute details of mainstream superhero titles like X-Men to the more discriminating (and downright snobbish) reader of idiosyncratic alternative comics like Eightball. Literate comics like Watchman, Radioactiv

Better, Stronger, Faster: San Diego Comic Con, 2014

In 1995 I made my first trip to Comic Con (at the time there seemed to be but one), and I was quite excited, not sure what to expect, and my thought going into the ginormous San Diego Convention Center was: “I’m an adult; what if somebody sees me?” That concern lasted about three seconds. We bought our tickets at the door (imagine that, way back in the 20th century), and immediately we were treated to — I’m just gonna go for it — the biggest, happiest gathering of creative and imaginative souls on this planet.

Will Eisner was just walking around, talking with people. Matt Groening was drawing Bongo over and over again. There were Boba Fetts. There were Wonder Women. I kept wanting to buy everything. It was amazing.

I loved it. I still love it. About a hundred and thirty thousand people join me in loving it (and that’s just in the notorious Hall ‘H’).

If you want to go to dinner sometime, I can blather about this event — this phenomenon! this institution! — from soup to nuts. But for ease of handling, here I simply present a few pix — the photographic equivalent of 20,000 words — with a dash of commentary. I didn’t chase the celebs — plenty of people did that, and did it well — and you know: astonishing things are headed your way from Middle Earth, and Gotham City, and the Pacific Rim, and wherever Mad Max lives. These are just some phone snaps I took as I ran around, loving life. May you know this feeling.

What REALLY Happens at Comic Con

San Diego’s Comic Con is the premier event for fans of all things comics and action-packed entertainment. Seeing as how there are quite a few fans of “entertaining” things, the crowds that descend on Comic Con are mammoth, creating interminable lines.

How bad are the Comic Con lines? So bad that the seasoned comic veterans DweebCast found themselves with enough time to record a surprisingly good (and hilarious) music video about “What REALLY Happens at Comic Con.”

In ‘The Devilers’ Comic Book, Exorcists Converge To Stop Hell From Breaking Loose

(RNS) There’s never a better time for a bunch of holy avengers than when all hell actually breaks loose.

The Dynamite Entertainment series The Devilers debuts Wednesday (July 16) as an action-packed supernatural comic book full of demonic beasties, big-picture philosophies and heroes that have to put religious differences aside in order to save Vatican City – and the world – from being turned into brimstone.

“When suddenly it’s ‘Oh that is a giant hellmouth that opened up in front of me,’ that changes your beliefs,” said series writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (The Bunker, The Life After), who’s doing the The Devilers alongside artist Matt Triano.

The main conceit behind The Devilers is the Catholic Church, which has had an armistice with Satan’s forces for hundreds of years to keep the demonic element downstairs, but not surprisingly the deal doesn’t hold. Horrific creatures arise when they stop caring about what mankind and the heavenly host can do to them, thereby beginning a new war on Earth.

Father Malcolm O’Rourke, whose faith has waned since having an otherworldly encounter as a child, is called into action by the church’s head exorcist, Cardinal Michael David Reed, as well as other potential saviors from all over the world.

Every issue of Devilers focuses on a different character in the group, which includes Mossad agent and rabbi Brenda Davide, a pro at revealing true evil; the tricky and persuasive Samir Patel; Raab Al-Fayed, a noted demonologist who controls a powerful entity; Chun-Bai, a woman able to bend nature to her will; and the teleporting man-bear demon Rex.

“As we’re discovering the world, each of them is discovering the world, too, and you get a sense of who they are that way,” said Fialkov, adding that the team readers meet in the first issue may not be there going forward.

The cardinal is a pretty hardcore sort but he in a sense reflects the stakes involved with the hellish situation.

“You can have dogma as much as you like, but when the rubber hits the road, you have to be practical,” Fialkov said.

Even though he had a childhood experience that for most people would be proof positive that there are higher powers at work, Malcolm, the priest and exorcist, is still more practical than spiritual.

“He’s had time soften the one thing that really gave him faith, but now suddenly it’s jammed in front of his face,” Fialkov said. “There’s no arguing with the things he sees.”

While the Devilers has a philosophical side, it’s still as big and crazy as a 1970s X-Men comic, according to Fialkov.

Fialkov’s I, Vampire series for DC Comics merged vampires and a monster world into a landscape of superheroes, and he’s trying to do something similar with The Devilers, an inherently dark book that’s more funny than bleak.

Triano illustrates a frog flipping off the cardinal in the first issue, and the holy man tells an atheist who gets a little too close to Rex, “Don’t kick the demon, son.” “That’s just me being me,” Fialkov said. “Anytime anything feels pretentious, I have to take the wind out of the sails.”

The next couple of issues feature the protagonists journeying through hell, “literally heading toward Satan’s throne room,” Fialkov said. “But the question is, who’s actually sitting on that throne? It might be a surprise.”

Archie Killed: Adored Comic Book Character To Die In ‘Life With Archie’ (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Not even Archie Andrews is immortal in the world of comics.

Archie Comics announced Tuesday that the famous comic book character will heroically sacrifice himself while saving the life of a friend in a July installment of “Life with Archie,” a comic book series that tells the story of grown-up renditions of Archie and his Riverdale gang. “We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched ‘Life with Archie’ five years ago and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in a statement.

Archie’s final moments will be detailed in “Life with Archie” No. 36, while issue No. 37 will jump forward a year and focus on his friends Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie honoring the legacy of their red-headed pal.

Archie first appeared in comics in 1941 and went on to become a colorful icon of wholesomeness.

In recent years, Archie Comics has tackled such issues as gay characters and the zombie apocalypse in Archie’s fictional hometown of Riverdale. However, Archie himself won’t need to rise from the grave. The freckle-faced character will still be alive and well in other series.

A Girl Comic and Her Heckler

“Sooo, you’re a comic?” he says, looking me up and down from head to toe. He appears to not believe the answer as he presses his pint of beer against his mouth, smiling into it instead of drinking it. He pauses there for a three seconds. Let’s call him “Craig.”

“Yeah!” I shrug. And glance past him towards the barkeep. Small talk is fun! Where’s the barkeep? Just need a drink.

Craig holds his eyes on mine and he gulps down his IPA. I can hear the stickiness in his mouth as he swallows and lets out a refreshing, “tssaaaahh.” His beer tastes good you guys but it’s not going to distract him from processing that I’m a girl and a comic because he can do two things at once, right? Bro!

“A girl… comic,” he slowly says out-loud like he’s sounding out a word in a foreign language. A girl comic! Out of nowhere my breasts suddenly rejoice. They’re getting the limelight they’ve always desired in my comedy. My breasts are attention seekers that way. They actually perk up at his identification. They even have their own choreography to Alan Thicke’s, “Blurred Lines” after I told them not to, trust me they are so dumb.

I respond again cordially after silencing my percolating and unruly comedy breasts, “Yeah! So I’m a comic.”

“Are you funny,” he says his question more as a statement without understanding that thinking oneself is funny is far from a standard for good comedy. See, funny means so much more than I could ever be alone. Funny is an energy, a potential to deeply connect, a person that has that spark that creates the space where the result is laughter. I answer, “Ya know, I’m grateful that people laugh.”

I glance past Craig at the barkeep, “G&T!” I yell “PLEASE!” I yell. “A double!” I yell. “Like my breasts!” I don’t yell that last part I’m just kidding.

I look over to see Craig still standing near. He leans back, “So, tell me a joke.”

“Come to a set,” I reply inviting him with a time and date of my next show.

See, comics understand this. And I think most people understand this too that comedy isn’t just telling a joke. It’s timing, it’s place, it’s syntax, set up, it’s replacing one syllable words with three syllable words because it sounds different, it’s honesty and authenticity and working and reworking a set. It’s also your mom. Asking a comic that you meet on the street to “tell you a joke” is another way of saying I’d really like you to minimize the maximum potential of comedy in thirty seconds or less so that I may approve your worth in being a part of it. Don’t be that guy.

But today it sounds more like grunting. “Commeee Onnnnn,” Craig grunts.

“Seriously, come to a show.”

“Hey guys! There’s a girl comic here who won’t tell a joke!” he sneers. “OK then, I am going to come to your show and heckle the shit out of you. Just to see if you can handle it.” He continues, high fiving his buddies. “Your fault,” he says assuring me. It is then I realize that I have inadvertently landed myself in a real life circle jerk and I have been caught with only this little girly dildo in this very amazing dick fight oh no what will I do.

I grin. No teeth. “Yeah dude, yeah.” I dig deep. See, this isn’t just comic vs. asshole heckler, this is every day not asshole comic vs. asshole future heckler.

As the night progressed, and each time I’d walk past their group I’d hear him taunt. And each time I’d hide my growing annoyance with a “See ya there!” Comics loathe hecklers for a variety of reasons but we don’t fear them. And for whatever reason it felt important for this guy to make sure I was afraid.

So at the end of the night when it was time to go, I stopped at the coat check and as I’m putting back on the sexiest pant-suit blazer you have ever mother-effin’ seen, I walk over to Craig, looked him square in the eyes and said, “Do you mind if I do something right now?”

And I reached and held him close and gave him the biggest and longest hug and I waited long after it got awkward and I waited until he melted in my arms like a little boy who is seeing his mother for the first time after he was kidnapped for 16 years when he was four. What a shame just old enough to have memories to keep him warm but not old enough to know if he was making them up; and I waited for his chest to slowly rise with relief and fall with trust right into my little lesbian arms and only after he let his guard down and whispered vulnerably with his head against mine, “Wow thanks, I really needed that.” Do I hold him tighter and deadpan into his soul, “Fucking come to my show and heckle me and see what happens.”

He laughed.

“Okay so you are a comic.” he paused, “I have an idea for a joke you could use.”

“Trust me, you’ve given me plenty,” I smiled into the last sip of my rocks glass with a gulp and walked out the door, thankful for my comedy and the tits that go with it.
