Common Gender Aims to Tap Underpenetrated Men’s Market in China

SHANGHAI — It was a case of the venue determining the launch city of men’s wear label Common Gender rather than Shanghai’s burgeoning reputation as an international fashion hub.
When looking at locations for the label’s first fashion show, Lea Chan, vice president and marketing director of parent company EPO Fashion Group, searched for venues in Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu, but settled on the former after discovering West Bund Art Center. Once an old aircraft factory, the industrial space has held onto much of its raw, urban interior, which was in keeping with the brand’s Nineties Berlin-inspired pop-up shop and edgy, angular fashion show on Tuesday.
The pop-up store and fashion show were attended by key Chinese influencers and business partners of the brand and featured a cast of international and local male models purposefully storming down the catwalk with a performance by American twin brother electro punk rock band The Garden.
EPO Fashion Group, parent company of women’s wear brands Mo & Co. and Edition 10; cosmetics brand REC, and children’s wear label Little Mo & Co. posted group sales of 3.5 billion yuan in 2017, or $ 555 million. Common Gender’s launch marks the Chinese company’s move into the domestic men’s wear market.

Common Trde Hopes to Invigorate the Showroom Experience

Laura Baker and James Waller are introducing a new showroom concept.
Baker, who co-owns the Pblc Trde showroom, and Waller, who cofounded the British streetwear brand Blood Brother, have partnered up to launch Common Trde, a showroom space that will be open during men’s market in Paris from June 22 to June 29 at 18 Rue Commines.
During previous seasons, Baker previewed her brands in either trade shows or rented out space in other showrooms, but with help from Waller, who has used his European network to bring in new brands, they are presenting more of a lifestyle space where brands of various sizes are able to maintain their own identity — each client had a hand in putting the space together — and use shared resources.
“In the past, we did not feel the brand’s individual identity was upheld,” Baker said. “It always seemed only to be about the trade show or that showroom. There didn’t seem to be any shared communication or practices.”
Baker and Waller are hoping to make the process more seamless for buyers and brands. They’ve created a show guide so buyers can preview the brands and speak to their sales managers before coming to the showroom. And instead

11 Qualities Every Truly Happy Relationship Has In Common

Chemistry and physical attraction may have brought you and your partner together, but you need more than a spark to maintain a happy, lasting relationship.

With that in mind, we asked marriage therapists to share the one quality they believe couples need to develop in order to stay together for the long haul. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Compassion

“You have to be able to put yourself in your partner’s shoes. Compassion toward your partner allows him or her to feel respected, appreciated and cared for and it fuels the connection, intimacy and partnership. Think of it as the essential food that every healthy relationship needs.” ― Carin Goldstein, a marriage and family therapist in Sherman Oaks, California

2. Compromise

“So many couples believe that a lack of problems, or the ability to anticipate and avoid them, is a key to a happy relationship. But in my experience, it’s not so much about avoiding problems so much as it is about being able to solve them together. Problems are always going to happen, just as life does. Knowing you can face them together keeps a relationship strong and healthy.” ― Alicia HClark, a psychologist in Washington, D.C.

3. A sense of humor

“The strongest couples I’ve met have the capacity to laugh at themselves. When a partner can laugh about their own messiness or their wish to have the table set in a certain way, they can communicate what they want without turning their partner into the enemy. Laughing at ourselves instead of judging makes the journey entertaining instead of a constant battle.” ― Ryan Howes, a psychologist in Pasadena, California

4. Trust

“As a specialist in infidelity, I can tell you that trust is the most important thing in a marriage. It takes years to build and a second to break. But it’s more than just sexual fidelity. A spouse is trusted with so much: fears, vulnerabilities, painful wounds from childhood. In a good marriage, a spouse discloses these innermost thoughts and trusts that it won’t be used against them in future arguments.” ― Caroline Madden, a marriage therapist and the author of After A Good Man Cheats: How to Rebuild Trust & Intimacy with Your Wife

5. Positivity

“We all need to be praised and appreciated but we so often get the opposite ― criticism ― even from our partner. Positivity is needed in relationships, especially ones that have grown past the honeymoon stage. Whether it’s a simple ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’ or a specific compliment for something done, we all need to hear it. When we praise our partner we strengthen our connection, bond and love.” ― Kurt Smith, a therapist who specializes in counseling for men

6. Intimacy

“Sexual and emotional intimacy is the bright shiny star of relationships. Intimacy is the difference between your relationship with your barista and your relationship with your spouse. You build intimacy over time. Intimacy is the feeling of belonging and being loved. It’s the feeling of being known and understood. It’s the feeling of being accepted and appreciated. If you have ever experienced or heard someone describe their relationship as hollow or empty, it’s probably because it’s lacking intimacy.” ― Laura Heck, a marriage and family therapist in Salt Lake City, Utah

7. Mutual respect

“Life tends to throw some unexpected curveballs along the course of a relationship. The one quality that consistently helps couples through adversity or tragedy is mutual respect. Self-esteem is essential to feel secure and satisfied with yourself so it makes sense that a high esteem and respect for your partner is an essential ingredient in a lasting relationship, both in joyous and challenging times.” ―  Elisabeth J. LaMotte, a psychotherapist and founder of the DC Counseling and Psychotherapy Cente

8.  Presence

“Being present is more than just putting down your devices and paying attention ― it’s showing that you’re deeply interested in the inner life of your partner and want to make their world better in any way you can. Being present means freely giving your partner the gift of your full focus and being there for them in a way that’s deeper than just being physically present. It means seeing things from their point of view and not just your own.” ― Debra Campbell, a psychologist and couple’s therapist in Melbourne, Australia

9. Love

“You need to love, honor and cherish one another. These vows are what keep people together happily over the long term. Here’s a brief rundown on what each mean: ‘To love’ means you demonstrate your love. Love is a verb ― an action word. There is no other way to show your spouse you love them except through action. We love through physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service and gifts. ‘To honor’ is to respect the one you love. You approach them in conversation in a way that shows you want the best for them and don’t want to harm them. ‘To cherish’ means to show your S.O. how much you value them. You treat them as the special person they are – your one and only.” Becky Whetstone, a marriage family therapist in Little Rock, Arkansas

10. Understanding

“There’s no problem you can’t resolve when you’re listening to each other and acting like a team. Create regular times during the week when you can talk uninterrupted and don’t let a week go by without a date night. Keep listening and understanding each other. Every ounce of listening effort will pay off tenfold.” ― M. Gary Neuman, a psychotherapist based in Miami Beach, Florida

11.  Friendship

“Couples who are good friends know each other well, give each other the benefit of the doubt and are fond of one another. When you take the time to strengthen your friendship, you’re more successful long-term. Making friendship a priority will help you weather any storm that comes your way.” ― Danielle Kepler, a therapist in Chicago, Illinois

9 Common Characteristics of People Destined for Greatness

Are successful people born or created?

We all carry the capacity to become successful. We’re all equipped with our own special gifts and talents. But some of us lose our path a long the way. Life can be a cruel teacher. We learn to stop dreaming and start being realistic.

People who become great break past the thinking society tries to place on them. They follow their dreams, accomplish something great, and leave their observers in a state of envy and awe.

What makes them different? Are there common traits of people destined to make a dent in the universe? Absolutely. Even if you don’t posses these traits right now they can be learned and applied.

Here are the traits of people destined for greatness.

They’re Not Humble

In the normal sense of the word. Most people pretend to be humble on the outside. Outward humility means that you don’t come off as cocky and try to appear modest. But on the inside you’re as arrogant as can be , because you feel like you deserve a better life but aren’t willing to work for it.

People who become great are humble on the inside. They put in the work. They practice. They learn everything that needs to be learned about their craft.

They’re Irrational

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” — George Bernard Shaw

People destined for greatness aren’t considered rational or realistic by society’s standards. Instead of blindly accepting what others tell them, they make the decision to form their own unique path. They’re the type of people who believe reality can be shaped in their minds.

They Don’t Believe In Inspiration

“I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” — William Faulkner

People on the path to greatness realize they won’t be feeling up to do the work each and every day. There will be days where you want to sleep in, avoid doing your work, or keep yourself distracted.

Don’t fall prey to the passion myth. People seem to have this idea that finding work you love to do is supposed to be fun one hundred percent of the time. No matter how much you love what you do, there will be tasks you dislike and days when you feel uninspired.

If you’re consistent and develop the ability to follow through you’ll be miles ahead of the pack.

They Don’t Live Balanced Lives

Your ability to prioritize time will determine how productive and effective you are. People who are on the path to greatness don’t spend their time democratically. They know how to say no to unimportant things in order to make time for their work. Yes, time with family and close friends is important, but after that comes work and nothing else.

Work-life balance is overrated. You don’t need a vacation, you need a vocation. When you find the work you’re meant to do you won’t want to take time off.

They’re Lucky

Successful people do, in fact, get lucky sometimes. They’re lucky because they put themselves in a position to be lucky.

There are two types of luck:

  • Blind luck – An example of blind luck is winning the lottery.
  • Purposeful luck – This is the type of luck where you’re spending your time growing, learning, and connecting with people. You “luckily,” happen to meet your future mentor, business partner, or investor in your company.

Opportunity mixed with preparation creates luck. When you’re determined to become great opportunities will present themselves and you’ll be prepared to seize them.

They Know That Personality Traits Can Be Learned

Some people are naturally charismatic and confident. If you aren’t a natural at these things it doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to develop these traits. Social skills are important when it comes to being successful. You’re likely going to have to talk to actual people in person to help spread your ideas and build the network you need to succeed.

You can join your local toastmasters club to work on your speaking skills. Top professionals have been known to take acting classes to build confidence and charisma. There are coaches and courses that teach you how to build confidence and charisma.

Do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Don’t fall into the trap of believing you’re limited to the personality traits you were born with.

They Visualize Their Success To The Point Of Certainty

Basketball players are trained to visualize their free throws going in before they attempt them. Golfers have been known to play entire courses in their head over and over again before they step on to the green. Your imagination and belief in yourself carry you towards your destiny.

One of the most difficult parts of following a lofty dreams is believing you can do it. Doubt will creep in every time you imagine yourself living out your dreams. But over time (and coupled with actual work) you’ll become certain of your vision.

Your imagination and vision will keep you going during tough points on your path.

They Ask Great Questions

Don’t say, “I can’t afford it.” Ask yourself, “How can I afford it?” Challenge yourself by asking this question instead of acquiescing and saying you can’t. You’ll be better for it. You’ll seek out and find solutions where you thought none existed before. – Robert Kiyosaki

People destined for greatness know that there is a solution to nearly any problem as long as you ask the right questions. Most people fail to think when faced with a difficult situation. They’re resigned to their circumstances. If you want to be great you need to figure out how to be great. You figure it out by asking great questions.

They Never Fail

People on the path to greatness don’t believe in failure. They make mistakes. Things don’t always go their way. But they treat everything like an experiment. In an experiment you form an educated guess based on your research. Then you test it. If the experiment goes south it’s not a failure –your hypothesis was just wrong. The experiment likely gave you valuable feedback for the future. A good scientist continues to conduct experiments until they make a breakthrough discovery.

Think of yourself as a scientist and run experiments. This blog post is an experiment in gauging what people get value from reading it. Your life is an experiment in figuring out what makes you feel fulfilled. You’re only a failure when you stop seeking answers.

The Common Thread That Connects Cartoonists At The New Yorker

While the cartoonists at The New Yorker have had a variety of different trajectories, there is a (rather odd) commonality that connects nearly all of them.

In addition to having fathers who were more than skeptical about their dream career paths, almost all of the artists had tense relationships with their moms when they were kids, filmmaker Leah Wolchok told HuffPost Live’s Josh Zepps on Monday.

“Everyone talked about their mothers,” she laughed. “Aside from Liana Fink, who seems to have a very healthy, thriving relationship with her mom and was inspired by her as an artist, I would say a lot of the cartoonists talk about the conflict they have with their mom growing up.”

Wolchok, who chronicled some of the publication’s illustrators for her HBO documentary, “Very Semi-Serious,” said the cartoonists also described a sense of loneliness and alienation at school, and quite a few remembered being “the smallest one who wasn’t getting chosen for the baseball team.”

But cartoonist Mort Gerberg assured that being passed over for the team in grade school had no bearing on his prospects for athletic success in the long run.

“The wonderful irony of that is for the past 10, 12, 15 years, I’ve been pitching for the softball team of The New Yorker. That’s my thing!” he said.

Watch the full HuffPost Live conversation with the cartoonists.

How to Get Rid Of 4 Common Summer Stains

summer-stains

Summer is prime stain season; not only are you subjecting your attire to more time outside (grass stains!), but let’s just say white linen and barbecue sauce do not make for good bedfellows. Here are some easy ways you can protect your outfit should you find yourself in trouble at a picnic, beach party, or any other potentially hazardous gathering. (C’mon, just because you’re chic doesn’t mean you’re immune to an errant squirt of ketchup.)

How To Remove Ketchup/Mustard Stains: These red and rust-colored stains are fast and furious, so you’ve got to act fast before it sets in…forever.

  1. First, scrape the excess ketchup or mustard off with a butter knife or spoon.
  2. Quickly run the stained fabric through cold water.
  3. Apply liquid laundry detergent to the stain and start rubbing the fabric from the outside of the mark moving in to minimize spreading the stain.
  4. If your stain is on white fabric—and only if it’s on white!—you can delicately dab on lemon juice with a sponge, which will act as a bleaching agent.

How to Remove Ice Cream Stains: Mint chocolate chip? Yum and potentially yikes. With ice cream stains, you need to act fast, and have water handy—there’s lots of soaking involved. Once the stain dries, it’s much harder to remove. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Soak the stained garment in cold water for 10 minutes.
  2. Rub detergent onto the stained area.
  3. Soak the stain in room temperature water for 30 minutes.
  4. Apply a stain remover stick and let it sit for up from 7 to 10 minutes .

How to Remove Sunscreen Stains: While patting yourself on the back for smartly wearing sunscreen, you got some on your sleeve. Hey, it happens. Here’s what to do to:

  1. Make sure the clothing and stain are dry.
  2. Sprinkle the stain with baking soda and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  3. Brush off any excess powder.
  4. Rub the stain with dishwashing liquid and wait five minutes.
  5. Mix one teaspoon of laundry detergent into a bowl of hot water and let the garment soak for an hour.
  6. Rinse the garment in hot water and launder normally.

How To Remove Iced Coffee Stains: A tall serving of iced coffee is fantastically refreshing on a hot summer day … until the glass sweats watery brown droplets right into your lap. Here’s what to do (and this works for hot coffee, too!):

  1. If it’s a fresh stain, wetting it with water and giving it a delicate wipe might just do the trick. If not, go to step 2.
  2. Rub liquid laundry detergent and cold water into the stain and let it sit for three to five minutes.
  3. If the stain remains, try soaking for five to 15 minutes in warm water and rinse.
  4. If the stain is still there, apply a stain stick or gel to the stained areas and let it stand for five minutes.
  5. Wash normally.

Case studies include ArtSpot Productions/Mondo Bizarro’s Cry You One about climate change in southern Louisiana, incorporating theatrics and organizing; Michael Rohd/Sojourn Theatre’s social and civic practices; Anne Basting’s University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee-based integration of performance and creative aging; and the collaborative cultural diplomacy experiment, smARTpower. Short companion pieces add expertise from Helen Nicholson, Todd London, Julie Thompson Klein, Nancy Cantor, Maria Rosario Jackson, and Penny Von Eschen. Jan Cohen-Cruz ends with suggestions for fully integrating performance in cross-sector initiatives. This latest book by a leading figure in engaged/ applied theatre and performance builds on its predecessors by offering a future-oriented perspective, a vision of art and performance interacting with a range of social sectors and with an emphasis on HE in such partnerships, and will be a ‘must-read’ for all students and scholars working in this field. ”

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid While Planning Your Wedding

There is nothing more frustrating to me as a wedding planner than a client not taking my advice. As the expert, when giving a suggestion or advice, I back everything up with stories from previous clients who didn’t listen. I’m not saying that I know everything. I am saying that I know more about planning weddings than your sister’s friend’s mother’s aunt’s cousin who “does events” in her spare time. I know this seems harsh but it needs to be said.

These are the five most common mistakes that couples make during the planning process and how to avoid them:

1. The on-site coordinator at your venue is not a wedding planner/coordinator. Often times a venue will add in a “wedding coordinator” as an incentive for you to book your wedding. What they don’t tell you is that they don’t do the same things that an independent wedding planner/coordinator does. They won’t call your vendors to finalize payments and when you realize that you forgot to get a garter two hours before you walk down the aisle, they aren’t hopping in their car to buy one for you. It’s a huge pet peeve because it is incredibly misleading. Brides normally find out how different the on-site coordinator is from an actual wedding planner when it’s too late.

I had a client a few years ago who called in hysterics because the on-site coordinator told her two days before the wedding that she wasn’t going to be at her wedding. She told the bride as if it was obvious that she wouldn’t be there. They had worked together for over a year. I stepped in two days before the wedding because of this very reason.

2. DIY doesn’t always mean cheaper. Pinterest has fooled brides into thinking that they can do anything just by looking at a pretty picture. If you weren’t crafty before your wedding, you’re probably not crafty now. There is nothing worse than seeing a bunch of DIY projects strewn throughout your reception that look like your 5 year old neighbor put them together for a pack of gum. If you can’t afford exactly what you want, find another alternative.

3. Stop trying to replicate someone else’s wedding. Make your wedding YOUR wedding. A few years ago I had a client whose wedding everyone dreamed of having. From the bridesmaid’s gowns to the centerpieces, this wedding was in high demand. I don’t discuss client’s budgets with anyone so they didn’t know how expensive everything was. One of my clients printed out pictures from my Instagram account and brought them to our design meetings. I gently would tell her that those particular centerpieces were extremely expensive and I’d present a few alternatives. Determined to have those exact centerpieces, she and her family put them together themselves. Once she saw them in the room, she had me remove them from each table and asked me to put the flowers directly on the table. I’m not an “I told you so” person but…

4. Just because someone has a “nice” camera, doesn’t make them a photographer. This is one of the biggest challenges that I face when it comes to my client’s booking a photographer. I cringe every time I hear, “my cousin has a nice camera so she’ll be taking our pictures.” Why would you spend thousands of dollars on the most important day of your life but not invest in the photos that will last forever? I’m not saying that you have to break the bank but if you’re spending more money on your invitations than your photographer, there is a problem.

5. Don’t lie about your budget. If your budget is $ 60,000 but you’d like to stick to around $ 50,000, tell your planner that. Whenever a client gives me their initial budget, I ask them if that’s the actual budget or if that’s the number that they want to stay close to. Believe it or not, knowing how much we have to work with in the beginning will possibly save you money in the end. Weddings are expensive and most people don’t know exactly how costly they are.

The book itself is a diagram of clarification, containing hundreds of examples of work by those who favor the communication of information over style and academic postulation-and those who don’t. His Majesty Baby and Some Common People

His Majesty Baby and Some Common People

UNTIL the a’bus stopped and the old gentleman entered, we had been a contented and genial company, travelling from a suburb into the city in high, good fellowship, and our absolute monarch was Baby. His mother was evidently the wife of a well-doing artisan, a wise-looking, capable, bonnie young woman; and Baby was not a marvel of attire, nor could he be called beautiful. He was dressed after a careful, tidy, comfortable fashion, and he was a clear-skinned, healthy child; that is all you would have noticed had you met the two on the street. In a’bus where there is nothing to do for forty minutes except stare into one another’s faces, a baby has the great chance of his life, and this baby was made to seize it. He was not hungry, and there were no pins about his clothes, and nobody had made him afraid, and he was by nature a human soul. So he took us in hand one by one, till he had reduced us all to a state of delighted subjection, to the pretended scandal and secret pride of his mother. His first conquest was easy, and might have been discounted, for against such an onset there was no power of resistance in the elderly woman opposite-one of the lower middles, fearfully stout, and of course a grandmother. He simply looked at her-if he smiled, that was thrown in-for, without her knowledge, her arms had begun to shape for his reception-so often had children lain on that ample resting-place. “Bless ‘is little ‘eart; it do me good to see him.” No one cared to criticize the words, and we remarked to ourselves how the expression changes the countenance. Not heavy and red, far less dull, the proper adjective for the face is motherly. The next passenger, just above Grannie, is a lady, young and pretty, and a mother? Of course; did you not see her look Baby over, as an expert at her sharpest, before she grows old and is too easily satisfied? Will she approve, or is there something wrong which male persons and grandmothers cannot detect? The mother is conscious of inspection, an

If You Love ‘Serial,’ You Probably Have More In Common With Weegee Than You Think

On October 3, 2014, “This American Life” producer Sarah Koenig began telling a very specific story. She introduced public radio listeners to a man named Adnan Syed, who may or may not have been wrongly convicted of killing his former girlfriend, an 18-year-old Baltimore resident named Hae Min Lee, back in 1999.

The rest is… Well, you know the rest by now.

Koenig set her sights on unraveling Syed’s guilty verdict, a decision that — today, at least — seems laced with doubt. What began as a small weekly investigation of this strange case, quickly evolved into a show with a five-million-person audience. “Serial” has since spawned countless Reddit subgroups, a new genre of podcasts about podcasts and a nearly nation-wide obsession with a crime committed 15 years ago.

As we wait for the conclusion of Koenig’s investigation, it’s impossible not to think about America’s current fascination with crime. As well as its past. We were reminded of an early 20th century icon, enraptured by the crisis and conflict of New York City’s crime scenes. Arthur Fellig, or Weegee as he’s pseudonymously known, was one of the most famous street photographers of the 1900s, who captured decades of violence with his stunning, monochromatic eye. He was obsessed with crime years and years before Koenig. And, probably, years and years before you.

weegee crime

Polish-born American photographer Arthur Fellig (1899 – 1969) with his Speed Graphic camera. He was known by the police as ‘Weegee’ for his ouija-like prescience of crime scenes and disasters. In fact he kept a radio in his car tuned to the police frequency, and was often able to reach the scene before the police themselves. (Photo by Weegee(Arthur Fellig)/International Center of Photography/Getty Images)

Felig was born in Austria in 1899, emigrating to the United States in 1910. In his early career, he spent time as an assistant to a commercial photographer and a dark-room technician, but it wasn’t until 1935 that he threw himself into freelance photography. He chose to work at night, racing to the scenes of crimes to snap the first photographs of murders, collisions and thefts for newspapers across New York City. He earned his nickname that way — appropriated from Ouiji — because he was nearly always the first photographer on site. He seemed to have an eerie ability to arrive before even the police. He was, in his own words, “spellbound by the mystery of murder.”

Working with his signature Speed Graphic camera, his images were seedy, but captivating. One aspect of his work that set him apart was that he caught glimpses of the officers digesting evidence and the onlookers attempting to peek through barricades, all the while standing before corpses and crashes. The expressions of these people were not necessarily sensational in their own right, but the landscapes functioned as behind-the-scenes footage. All of a sudden, the viewer was privy to a police investigation, fixated not only on the tragic, almost ungraspable elements of a crime scene, but the very human qualities too. What is the police chief thinking? What is that eye witness feeling? Even in black-and-white, it was easy to insert ourselves into his photography. We became a part of the drama.

And isn’t that, after all, what makes Koenig’s “Serial” so alluring? Hasn’t she, in the process of telling Syed’s story, transformed millions of radio fans into self-possessed detectives? We believe, in some small way, the answers that could help put this very real, and very devastating saga to rest are within our reach. Koenig might not provide it for us, but perhaps we’ll stumble upon the clues ourselves.

“For all of the work [Koenig’s] done over the past year, each installment gets us no closer to a definitive truth, at least thus far,” Stephanie Merry wrote in The Washington Post Blog. “That helps to explain the fanaticism.”

“I feel like the story we are telling is partly what happened here, what can we find out, and part of that question is my reporting,” Koenig herself explained to Vulture. “I’m in this story now, for better or for worse, as a character.” And so too, it seems, are the listeners.

Later in life Weegee went on to cover the celebrity world, an ominous transition from one form of sensation to another. (Especially given the fact that “Serial” fans are not shy about their desire for a “Hollywood” ending.) He also produced a beautiful collection of abstract imagery, from nudes to kaleidoscopic figures. But his early career, and his dark body of work, is often what we can’t help but remember. See a selection of that work below.

Combat Four of the Most Common Fears

Having just closed the chapter on Halloween this week, this is an opportune time to find our inner courage and kick some of our fears to the curb. Fear is a completely natural and healthy emotion to have. However, it’s good to be able to reflect and distinguish between fearing things that we can manage vs. those we can’t control. It’s easy to misguide excitement, anxiety and anticipation into the scary realm of fear, but with these simple suggestions and a fresh dose of perspective hopefully you can combat these four common fears!

1.Failure

It’s fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure. — Bill Gates

We never know what the future might hold, and for many that thought can be a scary one, constantly causing us to ask ourselves if we are going in the right direction, if our paths will lead us to success or stability. Maybe we’ve been taught that failure is a result of laziness or the product of making a wrong turn. Maybe we see failure as a signifier that we aren’t good enough to succeed. But this isn’t true at all! Failure often means that we are headed in the right direction. If we don’t fail we will never see success. Think of how you learned to walk. We never say babies “fail” when they fall. We accept that falling is a part of the process and that they will ultimately stand up and try again. The same holds true for life. Failure gives us the crucial lessons we need to find in order to stand stronger and find new avenues for success.

2. Health

But the real secret to lifelong good health is actually the opposite: Let your body take care of you. — Deepak Chopra

While some of you may be thinking that it’s pretty ironic for a fitness instructor to encourage you NOT to worry about your health, let me start off by saying that health is something to tend to, support and nurture, not fear. Listening to your body is the first step to living a healthy and balanced life. Don’t let your fear of things you can’t control physically consume you. Instead, focus on what your body is telling you. Eat, engage in daily physical fitness and keep your body rested and hydrated. Your body truly is a temple, and when you treat it as such you may be able to dispel the fears you have of it failing or turning its back on you. In the unexpected nature of life we often can’t control getting sick, genetics or not feeling our best, but that doesn’t mean we should let the fear of what may come consume us. Breathe, listen to and enjoy your body!

3. Aging

Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength. — Betty Friedan

Aging isn’t easy, especially when we watch the people we love go through it. We fear the unknown and the uncertainty of the future. But what if we began to see the cloudiness of our futures as exciting as opposed to fear invoking? What if the future was something we refused to allow being anything but great? A little bit of faith goes a long way. If we begin to make the future seem like a grand adventure, or encourage ourselves to see it as nothing but fulfilling, it will be. Every age has it’s own energy to it; lets have fun in our 20s but enjoy the understanding and focus of our 30s and 40s. Let’s relish the expanding families we may see in our 50s and the wisdom we’ve garnered in our 60s and 70s. There is poetry to each age and each has its own voice. So let’s wipe those future fears clean and replace them with curiosity about what we will learn, master and draw peace from at every stage of our lives.

4. Risk

The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision. — Maimonides

We all take risks in life, if we don’t, we may never have the experiences that life is all about: love, relationships, new jobs, education, our own physical limits, joy, bliss and understanding. Risk, whether it is asking someone out on a date or skydiving, can fill us with those unmistakable tiny butterflies inside our stomachs. However, while those butterflies feel uncomfortable they are, in fact, innocuous. Taking risks in life, as long as they aren’t dangerous or harmful to others, can make us scared but the end result can make us better. So take a risk and feel those butterflies! They can help you do what you’ve always dreamed but never tried. By making the butterflies your supportive friends, I promise you’ll enjoy the result.

Our fears can be a powerful and valid force in understanding both the world and ourselves. By delving deeper into distinguishing what is fear and what can be re-routed into other emotions, you can begin to discover a healthier and more fearless life.
