Misty Copeland, The Rock Weigh In on Under Armour Trump Controversy

The uproar over Under Armour’s chief executive officer Kevin Plank’s pro-Donald Trump remarks continued Thursday.
Ballerina Misty Copeland was the latest sponsored athlete to weigh in on the controversy, writing on her Instagram account: “I have always appreciated the great support and platform that Under Armour has given me to represent my community, gender and career on the world stage. However, I strongly disagree with Kevin Plank’s recent comments in support of Trump as recently reported. Those of you who have supported and followed my career know that the one topic I’ve never backed away from speaking openly about is the importance of diversity and inclusion. It is imperative to me that my partners and sponsors share this belief. I have spoken at length with Kevin privately about the matter, but as someone who takes my responsibility as a role model very seriously, it is important to me that he, and UA, take public action to clearly communicate and reflect our common values in order for us to effectively continue to work toward our shared goal of trying to motivate ALL people to be their best selves.”
Plank appeared on CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report” Tuesday during which he expressed support for

Under Armour Unveils Misty Copeland Apparel Collection

NEW YORK — Under Armour has built a successful franchise with its Steph Curry basketball shoes, and it’s hoping for similar success with its new Inspired by Misty Copeland apparel collection.
On Tuesday night, the activewear firm unveiled the women’s ath-leisure collection — its first apparel line with any of its sponsored athletes — during an event in the Meatpacking District here.
At the launch party, Copeland described the new collection as an “urban street-to-gymwear” line that women can wear to do ballet, yoga or have lunch. She said she worked closely with Kate Williams, vice president of women’s design at Under Armour, to create the line, which was unveiled on the company’s web site right before the event began.
Williams said the line “embodies the style, spirit and energy” of the dancer, and features technical fabrics coupled with updated styling. “Misty as an athlete is so inspiring,” she said.
Copeland, the first female African-American principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater, has been sponsored by Under Armour since 2013 and is one of the faces of its “I Will What I Want” advertising campaign targeted to women.
“When they signed me, I didn’t know how the public would respond,” Copeland said, adding that she never

Misty Copeland Makes Her Broadway Debut

Just one week after becoming the first African-American principal dancer in American Ballet Theatre history, Misty Copeland announced another career milestone — she would make her Broadway debut in the revival of “On The Town” on August 25th.

The 32-year-old dancer may be one of the top ballerinas on the planet, but she’s never publicly sang in her life. With only two weeks of prep and one “put-in” rehearsal, she was scared.

“Stepping into this theater for the first time — I felt nervous and it’s been a long time since I’ve really felt nervous about performing,” Copeland said. “Having one ‘put-in’ rehearsal with the full cast did not feel like enough before making my debut.”

Watch the video above to see Copeland’s journey through rehearsals until her opening night.

Ballerina Misty Copeland Talks Being Unapologetically Black And More

This is an excerpt from Essence magazine’s September 2015 cover story “Stepping Up” about American Ballet Theatre ballerina Misty Copeland. The article was written by Julee Wilson, senior fashion editor at The Huffington Post.

“…One of Copeland’s most endearing qualities, beyond dancing on her toes and making it look easy, is the fact that she’s so unapologetically Black. ‘It’s easy for someone who isn’t Black or other or who has never experienced racism to dismiss what I’m saying…it’s easier for them to say, ‘Why do you focus so much on that? You’re a beautiful dancer.’ But the reason I’m here and I have this voice is because I’m Black.’ Copeland tells me that she has never tried to pretend that ballet doesn’t have a race problem. She recounts times fellow dancers told her that some American Ballet Theatre (ABT) staff members were overheard saying, ‘Misty stands out too much because of her skin color.’ With that said, Copeland’s singular mission is changing the landscape of ballet by promoting Project Plié, an initiative launched in September 2013 by ABT with Copeland on the advisory board to increase racial and ethnic representation at ballet companies around the country. Copeland also mentors several dancers on the rise. At the moment she has more than a dozen mentees (including identical twin brothers Naazir and Shaakir Muhammad, who are currently standout students at the School of ABT). ‘I’m going to continue to be who I am and my experiences as a Black woman have made me who I am. All of a sudden now that I’m in this position, I’m not going to say, ‘I’m just a dancer.’ It’s a huge deal because I’m a Black woman. That’s why it’s a big deal…”
