Zandra Rhodes, Johnson Hartig of Libertine Honored in Dallas

DALLAS — Masterful colorists and mavericks Dame Zandra Rhodes and Johnson Hartig of Libertine just might collaborate in the future.
The two discussed the idea briefly Friday morning in Dallas, where they met for the first time before sharing the spotlight at the annual Night of Stars gala at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas.
“It felt like this fast friendship,” Hartig said later. “I call her my soul sister. I said we should do something and she said, ‘I’d love to. Let’s talk about it when I come to L.A.’ So, we’ll see. She’s very busy.”
Produced by the Dallas chapter of Fashion Group International, the fete’s “No Rules” theme celebrated Rhodes for Lifetime Achievement, Hartig for Career Achievement, Tata Harper for Career Achievement in Beauty and Gonzalo Bueno for Career Achievement in Interior Design. Bueno is a principal in X+III in Dallas and Treceavo Plano in Monterrey, Mexico.
During the cocktail hour, a clutch of models on a platform displayed a retrospective of gowns that Rhodes brought in from London. The dinner program featured a sparkling runway procession of Libertine looks for men and women.
Rhodes’ longtime friend and former model Jan Strimple presented her with the Lifetime Achievement prize, describing the “78

Lela Rose Honored in Dallas

Lela Rose made her debut at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Presentation Ball many moons ago, so it was no surprise when the league chose her to receive the inaugural Fashion Notes Designer Award.
“I remember teetering on the stage trying to do my bow with my nose to the floor, so I thought it would be nice to come back,” Rose said Monday at the fifth annual Fashion Notes luncheon at the Fairmont Dallas hotel.
The prize recognizes outstanding achievement in design, said DSO League president Lisa Loy Laughlin.
“Thank you for your strong and graceful example for all the women of the world, including our Dallas Symphony Orchestra debs,” Laughlin said.
Rose wore a pink coat trimmed with Mongolian lamb over a gray jumpsuit from her fall collection. But while some attendees also wore her designs, none appeared in the luncheon’s short runway show organized by Stanley Korshak. The house recently stopped selling to Korshak because they had so many points of distribution in Dallas, Rose explained. They include Rose’s flagship store at Highland Park Village as well as Neiman Marcus, Tootsies and Warren Barron bridal shop.
Rose capitalized on the visit with a lively party at her store Friday, which featured a

Goop Celebrates Dallas Pop-up

GOOP DEE DOO: Dallas is stuck on Goop — and Gwyneth Paltrow.
When she invited local tastemakers to shop last Thursday at Goop’s pop-up in Highland Park Village, they came out in force.
“Goop has a way of curating the home, clothing and lifestyle in a way that is special and livable, and people love it,” said Christen Wilson, who’s on the board of the Tate Americas Foundation. “I bought a silver jacket for my son and a navy sweatshirt.”
“I love that you can have a margarita and buy some salt and maybe a Prada bag,” said Bagsnob blogger Tina Craig. “It’s like the next level.”
Paltrow and Highland Park Village co-owners Elisa and Stephen Summers returned the favor that evening, hosting them and 55 more for an al fresco dinner in the Summers’ verdant backyard. Among those attending were Nick Wooster, former Forty Five Ten executives Brian Bolke and Taylor Tomasi Hill, art consultants and dealers Lisa and John Runyon and blogger Jane Aldridge.
The party was an ode to Goop’s collaboration with Cointreau, which meant plenty of margaritas were washed down with fresh, veggie-oriented cuisine by chef Seamus Mullen.
“Delicious,” said Craig.

The Dallas RTW Fall 2018

Name: The Dallas
Main message: Her brand The Dallas may only be two years old, but Fumie Tanaka is no newcomer to Japanese fashion, having worked as a designer for such major companies as United Arrows, Jun and Sazaby League. Her experience shows in her intricate knits and unconventional use of texture. She showed cozy sweaters with fringe details and sexy open backs alongside silky, layered floral dresses, sparkling metallic turtlenecks and plaid pantsuits. Outerwear included a laminated trench and billowing detective capes. Tanaka finished off the collection with her trademark leather accessories in flower shapes with long tassels.
The result: While some looks didn’t fit in and the collection would have benefited from a strong edit, it was a solid first showing from a brand that has already generated buzz.

Etienne, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology, launched his Levenity sportswear label in Dallas in 2015.
Known for jackets and coats, Levenity is sold primarily through its web site, custom orders and one store, 9J Boutique in New York, Etienne said. Everything is made at his studio at South Side on Lamar, a large loft building that shelters many artists.
The other nominees for women’s wear were Tendai Tawonezvi, who creates colorful sportswear primarily with African fabrics under the label Neobantu, and Jerry Matthews and Francesca Viamonte for Nine Muses Collection contemporary sportswear.
Jason Simmons clinched the Rising Star Award for men’s wear. His company, DeadSoxy, manufactures fashion socks in Dallas and guarantees they won’t slip.

Real Housewives of Dallas’ D’Andra Simmons’ on Diamonds, Designer Gowns and Twitter Feuds Between Castmates

Season 2 of The Real Housewives of Dallas may just be getting started, but new housewife D’Andra Simmons has already established herself as having one of the best wardrobes of any Real Housewife in history (OK, maybe tied with Lisa Vanderpump). From her closet full of high-end designer gowns to her blinding collection of jewelry, the Dallas native’s style follows the age old saying, “everything’s bigger in Texas.”

Turns out, her impeccable wardrobe is thanks to flawless taste and her background in fashion — before transitioning into a business woman with her own beauty empire, she worked at Saks Fifth Avenue under Rose Marie Bravo (who later ran Burberry). During our conversation with Bravo’s breakout star, we learned so many fascinating fashion tidbits like this, that we’re sharing all the secrets to her stellar style, below.

She had a personal connection to Oscar de la Renta.

In the episode where D’Andra cleaned out her closet, eagle-eye viewers may have noticed the shocking number of Oscar de la Renta pieces she owned. “Before my husband, I was engaged to Oscar de la Renta’s godson and so I have a ton of Oscar de la Renta in my closet,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I’m not getting rid of the things before he passed away.”

Her closet is the size of a small home.

Since she owns so many designer pieces, her closet is massive. “Literally I can probably have a 10 person slumber party in there,” she says about the size of her closet. “What happened was when we moved into this house, which I built for myself as a single woman from the ground up, this person who designed my closet was a giant. She’s 6’2″ and I’m tiny so I’m always on a step stool and I can’t get to anything.”

As a result, she’s currently planning a complete overhaul of the space. “It’s going to be more functional because right now it is not at all functional. It’s very big but it’s not functional.”

She already has a fashion regret on the show.

Even with a closet full of designer clothes, it took her a minute to find her groove when it came to getting dressed for filming. She says the outfit she wore during the “Walking in Memphis” episode was her least favorite. “I was wearing my sweater inside out from Anthropologie. I had a bandana on my head. I’m like what the hell was I thinking? I think it was my first week of filming. I learned after that.”

She’s handling her haters like a pro.

Between Twitter feuds with castmates to hurtful comments from viewers on social media, she’s learning to take her new fame in stride. “It’s mean and at first I was upset.” she shared. “But now I’m thinking this is actually kind of funny. I’m just getting used to how this world works. And now I found the mute button so that’s fabulous. I would never block anyone because I want them to see what I’m doing and how fabulous my life is. I am not stupid enough to block them.”

WATCH: Which ‘Real Housewives’ Star Warned New Dallas Housewives About Doing the Show?

Shopping in Dallas is a serious sport.

To prep for shooting days, she shopped at a store called Tootsies in Dallas once a week for new pieces. “I go every week to pull clothes and most of the time I end up buying to be honest with you,” she says. “They have Carolina Herrera and Oscar . The Dallas store is more hip with trendy designers and more mainstream so you’ll see a lot of Alice + Olivia.”

Before her days on the show, she frequented the flagship Neiman Marcus store downtown. “If you shop downtown you’re old money socialite, if you shop other places you’re not necessarily,” she explains. “So I shop downtown with a private shopper and she would bring all the Oscar de la Renta, the Caroline Herrera, the lines I have worn for years and years. And we’d pick things to wear for my season.”

And the red carpet during Dallas’ society season is as cut-throat as Hollywood’s award circuit. “They keep a list of all the women who are socialites and what they’re going to wear so nobody overlaps,” D’Andra explains.

Her jewelry collection is massive.

Simmons’ mother, Dee Simmons, lets her have free rein of her jewelry collection. “I never need to buy jewelry. My dad said if my mother got up all night long every two minutes and changed jewelry she wouldn’t get through it all for the whole night.”

On the show, the ring she wears most often is a 24 karat yellow diamond. She has a second yellow diamond that checks in at 18 karats with smaller diamonds surrounding it. Also in her rotation? An 8-karat, 10-karat, and 16-karat ring, which she rotates between.

RELATED PHOTOS: All of the Real Housewives Who Have Denied Getting Plastic Surgery

D’Andra is following in her mom’s footsteps with her own beauty line, Hard Night Rough Morning.

Dee launched her own skincare line, Ultimate Living in 1996 as a way to provide the highest quality nutritional supplements and skin care products available. And in 2008 D’Andra launched her own skincare line, Hard Night Good Morning, with products that are also naturally derived. “We have certified organic aloe now as our main ingredient because aloe is much better, much more efficacious to carry the actives to the cellular level versus of water,” D’Andra says about her line. “If you have water as a first ingredient water evaporates, aloe penetrates.”

A lot of her ingredients come from sub-Saharan Africa because she studied the skincare routines of local women in Nairobi when she was living there. Out of her entire line, one of the best-selling products is the eye cream. “Everyone who tries the eye cream just loves it because it’s good for dark circles, puffiness, and anti aging, crow’s feet, wrinkles, elasticity, everything.”

There’s no word yet if D’Andra finally gets to take over the family business (a major plot of her story line on the show) but she has big plans for the company once she does. She recently moved the office to a newer, more contemporary building. And, yes, her mom brought all her ’90s relics with her.

The Real Housewives of Dallas airs Mondays (10 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

John Varvatos to Open Dallas Store at NorthPark Center

Texas is at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now and that includes John Varvatos.
The designer is still planning to open his 21st store in Dallas on Friday, but due to Hurricane Harvey, which has devastated Houston and other communities in the area, the new store as well as the Houston boutique will be donating 10 percent of their sales to the American Red Cross during the month of September.
The Dallas store, at the NorthPark Center, will be Varvatos’ 28th unit globally. The 2,800-square-foot unit will carry the brand’s full assortment of John Varvatos Collection, Star U.S.A. and Converse x John Varvatos apparel and accessories.
Not surprisingly, the store will have a rock ‘n’ roll theme. The designer has teamed with Rock Paper Photo to showcase a selection of images of rock legends including Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan as well as Texas natives Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The storefront features glazed brick and antique-finished zinc metal, the floors are rift and quartered wood and the walls are white brick and walnut. Displays include vintage tables, leather seats, custom benches and oversize mirrors as well as the brand’s signature “Edison Bulb” chandelier with more than 1,300 lights.

VIDEO: Wild Somali Baby Asses Are Super Rare, Totally Precious and a First for the Dallas Zoo

All jokes aside about their name, we are getting quite a kick out of the Dallas Zoo’s new — also exceedingly rare and critically endangered — Somali wild ass babies.

On Tuesday, the zoo introduced its two new residents, half-sisters Kalila and Naima, on Facebook. The beautiful, bucking girls were born just 10 days apart to mama wild asses Liberty and Hani. Their father, Abai, was brought over in 2005 from the Basel Zoo in Switzerland to help bring a new bloodline of asses to the U.S.

“This is a big moment for our hoofstock team. Somali wild asses are critically endangered with less than 600 left in the wild,” said mammal curator John Fried in the zoo’s recent press release. “Only nine institutions in the U.S. care for this rare species, and to be able to welcome two babies is truly one of the highlights of my career.”

Kalila, whose name means “dearly loved” in Arabic, was born on July 9 to 13-year-old Liberty, while Naima, whose name means “calm” was born on July 19 to first-time mom Hani, who is 5 years old. The animals are herbivores and have a life expectancy of 40 years.

“These little girls have brought so much excitement to our hoofstock barn,” said mammal supervisor Christine Rickel in the press release. “Although they were born 10 days apart, they look vastly different. We joke that Liberty has super milk because Kalila’s already a big girl. She was born weighing 65 pounds – 14 pounds heavier than Naima.”

The moms and foals were introduced to each other last week, but the mothers are protective of their babies. Thus far they are hesitant to let their little ones play together, preferring that the energetic foals find their footing (i.e. run around in circles!) on their own.

Somali wild asses are native to the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. Their numbers have drastically dwindled for a number of reasons, including competition with other livestock for limited land and water supplies, crossbreeding with domestic asses and the local traditions of hunting this unique species for food and medicine. (Some believe the animals’ fat treats tuberculosis.)

With beautifully Zebra-esque striped legs, soft gray fur, a white belly and spiky black-and-gray manes, these asses stand out from the wild equid pack. They are also the smallest of the equids, standing at 4 ft. at the shoulder and weighing about 600 lbs. in adulthood. Their hooves, which are also the smallest of the equids, help them navigate steep, rocky terrain.

Zookeeper Laura Frazier caught the behind-the-scenes, playful moments of these wild little ladies and their moms in the video above, but you can see them for yourself from the zoo’s Adventure Safari monorail.

Coach Commissions Artist Arthur Peña for Dallas Installation

DOWN IN DALLAS: Coach wined and dined 50 Dallas fashion and art elites, influencers and philanthropists Thursday at The Joule Hotel. The teaser for the new, expanded store, opening June 30 at NorthPark Center, was also a celebration of the brand’s commission of work by Dallas artist Arthur Peña. It was the first such collaboration for Coach, and the artist created colorful abstract murals for three branded billboard-like banners around town plus an exhibition that runs through early July in the mall. NorthPark is known for its museum-quality collection of modern and contemporary art, and Dallas is a hotbed of contemporary art collectors.
“We were trying to find a way to be locally relevant, to cut through,” said Coach North America marketing director Alexis Kirk. “We wanted to do [the artwork] in the community and then bring it back to the center.”
Dallas Contemporary exhibition director and senior curator Justine Ludwig linked Peña with the brand. “Stuart Vevers [Coach’s creative director] brings art and music together in a really beautiful way, and that’s what Arthur does in his practice,” she said, noting Peña’s openings regularly feature a band. “Thank you, Coach, for having faith in Dallas-based talent.”
Guests included Lynn McBee, Jane Aldridge, Michelle Nussbaumer, Maxine

Dallas Retailers Focus on Special Items

Facing intense competition both online and from major stores, specialty retailers shopped carefully for distinctive items, lifestyle togs, denim and jewelry at the trans-seasonal women’s market held Jan. 25 to 28 at the Dallas Market Center.
Orders were split about evenly between spring and summer deliveries and pre-fall and fall, according to sales agents. Buyers responded to a range of hues, from soft blush and peachy neutrals to earthy shades of green and blue and vivid prints.
“People are buying closer to need than they ever have,” said Tom Striegel, owner of Striegel Sales. “This is the first time I kept spring [samples] from my sportswear lines like Nic + Zoe and that was unheard of in the past.”
He described the show as “excellent,” led by stalwart Nic + Zoe and his debut of Liverpool jeans and Neon Buddha tops.
“Everyone wants to see something new, so anytime you have that it’s really good,” Striegel said.
Like last year, the market gained some traffic from the big Total Home & Gift show that ended the day before.
“Everyone is diversifying their mixes,” said sales agent Pam Kramer.
She did well with Vendula novelty handbags in the shape of a caravan trailer and a new line of neutral-hued jersey

Dallas Is Where I Finally Get to See The Famous French “Déjeûner sur L’herbe” Painting By Monet

2016-11-24-1480010837-9205425-dejeunersurlherbe2parties.jpg

Dallas-Fort Worth.

One could possibly think that the Dallas-Fort Worth appellation is just an indication of a big twin megapolis, when in fact, as I discovered Sunday, it’s two very distinct cities, not even remotely touching, with a Grand Prairie in-between – grande prairie means large field in French.

So it took me an hour to drive from Dallas to Fort Worth Arts District to reach the Kimbell Museum.

Needless to say, I was starving when I reached the museum. True fact is that I always eat first at art exhibits, firstly because I am always starving, and secondly because museums have the best cafés and shops.

The Kimbell has a unique flat rate fee for plates of three sizes – small, medium, and large. The menu is the same for all. But you pay by the size of your plate. Some people have mastered the art of piling up tons of food in a precarious balance on their plate. I saw some lunchers with a small plate who had more food than me on my medium one.

Was it “worth” it?

But I digress. Claude Monet is one of these great French painters that everyone knows. They may not know his name but will recognize his art. He is a familiar painter with a subdued and sweet domestic life that accompanied his paintings all his life. His paintings of Venice, London, and Paris are vital witnesses to the cities’ daily landscapes.

Organized in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, thanks to loans from 10 countries, and a handful of private collectors, the show offers a unique view of the early years of the master, starting when he was 17 years old and painted the “View at Rouelles” where he lived.

All the paintings presented at the Kimbell are from Monet’s early years and have seldom been seen in museums. The precious exhibit is a must-see for lovers of impressionists’ work.

Le Déjeûner sur l’Herbe.

My favorite Monet piece is the whimsical lunch on the grass, for its romantic setting, the fashion so beautifully described, and the funky story of its missing part. You will only see two pieces of this large painting at the Kimbell, as this is the only remaining parts of the massive representation of a lunch in the woods. Monet explained how the painting got cut up and subsequently gone shorter:

“I had to pay my rent, I gave it to the landlord as security and he rolled it up and put in the cellar. When I finally had enough money to get it back, as you can see, it had gone moldy.”

When his landlord finally gave it back, Monet cut it up and kept only three pieces – but the third part has now disappeared.

Pricey grain stacks.

The auction house Christie in New York just sold last week the piece “Grain stack” for a hefty $ 81.4 million, when the hope was to sell it for half of that. I won’t tell you who bought it, because it’s a secret – the 1891 canvas was won by an anonymous collector bidding over the telephone.

The wheat stack sold is not at the Kimbell, but a couple of the series of about 20 stacks canvases are on view – better hurry to see them before they sell for millions and vanish into some lucky private living room!

2016-11-24-1480010925-9365746-monet.jpg

Another Monet had already set a record for the painter; his “Water Lily Pond” was sold for $ 80.4 million in 2008. The 19-part elliptical painting of the “Nymphéas” is another familiar sight for many. A special studio was built for the size of his project, and he devoted the rest of his life to the large masterpiece.

We are treading far away from cutting up paintings to pay the rent! If only Monet could see the frenzy of collectors around his art today.

Claude Monet was a great impressionist master – good at drawing, and even better at rendition of material such as clouds, water, and snow. Friends with Renoir, his flowers show the influence the other master had on him.

” Qu’y a-t-il à dire de moi ? Que peut-il y avoir à dire, je vous le demande, d’un homme que rien au monde n’intéresse que sa peinture – et aussi son jardin et ses fleurs ?”

(What is there to say about me? What can possibly be said, I am asking you, about a man that nothing in the world interests except his painting – and also his garden, and his flowers?)

Prabal Gurung overcame his admitted fear of public speaking last weekend to accept an award for career achievement from the Dallas chapter of Fashion Group International.
“When I was told about this award, I was really taken aback, grateful and also excited to come to Dallas,” Gurung told the “Night of Stars” gathering at Fashion Industry Gallery. “I was born in Nepal, grew up in Nepal, lived in India, lived in London and then I came to America. I traveled everywhere, but the kind of generosity and warmth you guys have shown me — I am really grateful and will never forget this, so thank you very much.”
Gurung noted that his designs are inspired by strong women, and the foundation he started to educate girls in Nepal is intended to help empower them.
“This award is an affirmation not only to me but to my team and everyone else back in Nepal that the path that I chose, the decision that I made to leave my family back in Nepal to come here and live the dream, was the right one,” he said.
The fund-raiser for FGI Dallas’ scholarship fund also honored Morgan Fairchild for lifetime achievement, NorthPark Center co-owner Nancy Nasher for career

Dallas Keuchel’s Fashion Statement? His Big, Lucky Beard

He doesn’t fear the beard. Dallas Keuchel, starting pitcher for the Houston Astros, has embraced the full facial hair look and it’s working for him on and off the field. Coming off a breakout season in 2014, the lefty started the 2015 All-Star Game for the American League, where he — and his beard — generated a fan following of hirsute look-alikes.
WWD caught up with the All-Star at MLB Network’s studios in Secaucus, N.J., this week to find out what started it all, the secret to a healthy beard, and why he studied fashion merchandising in college.
Tell us the story of your beard? When and why did you start to grow one?
Dallas Keuchel: It started when two of my best buddies back home kind of dared me to grow it out all season last year. I did that and once the season ended, I couldn’t really shave it just because of the superstition of me having a pretty good year. And now we’re here 17 months later.
Take us through your grooming regime — any special tricks or tips to keep your beard in shape?
DK: There were a few articles that came out about gentlemen and their beards not being clean, but

Bryce Dallas Howard’s High-Heel Workout From Behind the Scenes at Jurassic World

Much ado has been made about Bryce Dallas Howard‘s high heels from Jurassic World—specifically, the fact that she wears a pair the entire time, running from dinosaurs and all. Costar Chris Pratt parodied her running, and Howard savvily answered questions about it at the film’s premiere, telling reporters “it’s way better than running barefoot in a jungle, I’ll tell you that.”

Howard was the one who green-lit the Sam Edelman heels after hurting her ankle while shooting a take in platform wedge sneakers that the crew had spray-painted to look like nude heels (which must have been an intriguing look too). After the heel decision had been made, Howard told People she “fixated on having the strongest ankles imaginable” and made a wooden platform contraption specifically for working out her feet.

“I’d put my foot on it and do calf raises and then stay on my tippy-toe and do squats. Then I’d turn perpendicular and exercise each side of my foot. Just to practice the stabilizing muscles.”

Exercise kinda like you’re prepping to run from dinos with this squat and calf-raise combo:

‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Makeup Artist On Matthew McConaughey’s Tan And Jared Leto’s Pink Lipstick

Five minutes into watching the Oscar-nominated film “Dallas Buyers Club,” I wanted to bury my tear-stained face in a bag of salty movie theater popcorn.

The movie’s depiction of the AIDS crisis has sparked some emotionally charged reactions from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as well. But as a beauty editor, I was also caught up in the dramatic physical transformations of actors Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Months later, I am still awestruck by makeup artist Robin Mathew’s ability to create such convincing rashes and lesions on a $ 250 [supplies] budget.

So, how exactly did she do it? Mathews recently dished about her “Dallas Buyers Club” beauty secrets.

Spoiler alert: Read on to find out how this professional snagged an Oscar nod thanks to her ingenious use of grits, MAC lipstick and a lot of tanning products.

What was it like working with the most tanned man in America, Matthew McConaughey, and Jared Leto, an actor who is no stranger to makeup?

Both Matthew and Jared were amazingly supportive of this makeup process, and they were 100 percent involved. They realized how important it was that they look like, you know, like they had these different stages of full-blown AIDS. And it was difficult because the only time the camera wasn’t rolling was basically during our lunch breaks and makeup changes.

The director, Jean-Marc Vallée, shoots without any camera or lighting setup. So we didn’t have a grip or lighting department. The camera was always ready to roll in 5 minutes. We just shot, shot, shot and never stopped. For them to actually say, hold on a second. We gotta take 45 minutes, or whatever it was to do this important makeup change, really was a great deal of help and support. And I’m so grateful for that, and it make a big difference in the film, I think.

What type of research did you conduct to really nail down the aesthetics?

We were lucky through the production to hook up with Dr. David Hardy, an infectious diseases specialist. He really talked me through what the physical stages of AIDS looked like.

There’s three common physical traits we see with people with full-blown AIDS — they get extremely skeletal in the face; they get a rash called seborrheic dermatitis, which is kind of a rosacea-colored, patchy, flaky dry rash; and then, of course, lesions. So it was so important that they look like they were really sick. Like they were AIDS patients … pure realism. It couldn’t look like makeup and it couldn’t look like a Hollywood version of AIDS. It had to be real, which goes along with this director’s style of shooting, and I’m so excited after viewing the film that we accomplished that.

How were you able to pull off such a huge feat with just a $ 250 materials budget?

I have no idea how we were able to shoot the entire film with the $ 4.5 million dollar budget that we had. It’s 100 percent the most under-budgeted film I’ve ever done. After looking back, scrounging around, and begging and pleading for supplies from people, then calling in favors and even using food products in the place of prostheses, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so glad that we had the money that we did because we wouldn’t have got the realistic looks we were able to get. There’s such raw, gritty detail to a lot of the makeup in the film.

We were looking at the pictures, and I said, normally I would use a prosthesis for this, but what can I substitute? It looked like grits and cornmeal on top of other makeup products. So I hand-painted underneath and then I applied a makeup-effects product to make the skin look taut, dry and wrinkly. As that dried, I pressed in grits and cornmeal to make a pustule rash. We first tested it on Matthew, and he loved it and was a big advocate for it. I thought it would be the end of my career.

What was the makeup process like transforming Matthew and Jared throughout the film?

Both Matthew and Jared came to us 40 pounds thinner than they normally are, so they were pretty darn skeletal to start with. But because we would shoot so out of sequence, we would have to change them back and forth from their sickest looks to their healthiest looks many times in a day. To do that, I used products that take the red out of the skin, and I used that all over their face and bodies to make them look pale. Then I started with a contour color, a dark makeup shade, and I contoured every bone that I could find in their face or every part of their body that was showing in the costume that they were wearing that day. As they got more sick and skeletal, I just continued that contouring process further by looking at photos and where I couldn’t see the bones, I actually drew them in. Also, I drew tons of veins on their face and hands when they were at their final stages. I’d add highlight to the bones as well.

To make them look healthy, like they had gained 20 pounds, for Matthew I gave him a slight tan and I’d reverse highlighting and contouring. So everywhere I had gone in before to make them look skeletal and done the dark makeup underneath the bone and light makeup on top of the bone to make it protrude, I did the opposite. For Matthew, I also used dental plumper, these four little pieces that clip on his upper and lower teeth, and they have a bit of dental material that pushes cheeks out from the inside to make them look fuller.

My key makeup artist and I spent four and a half hours contouring every bone on their bodies for their scenes. She started on the back, I started on the front and we just went to town.

Why did you use tanning for Matthew’s character, Ron Woodroof?

It was actually Matthew’s idea and it wasn’t necessarily to make him look heavier, but healthier. He totally came up with it. Obviously it’s the opposite of pale, but Matthew and Jared had so many levels of sickness to show the different stages of AIDS throughout. [For] one of the first levels of sickness for Matthew, when he showed up in the morning on set … we didn’t do anything to him. He was super skinny and had stayed out of the sun for months, so he wasn’t anywhere as tan as he normally is. The next level would be to make him pale, so I’d start with the highlighting and contouring. But as a person, he realized he looked healthier when he had a bit of a tan, and it was his idea to add that back in.

I did it all by hand with a tanning product because, again, up to five times a day I’d have to change him back from his sickest look to his healthiest look. So anything I did had to be completely removable instantly.

Can you tell me about that bright pink lipstick Jared’s character, Rayon, wore?

I adore that lip color myself and I can tell you it’s a MAC color. That look is actually inspired from the ’60s actress Jane Forth. There is a pretty famous photo of her where she almost has identical makeup on. That, of course, is when Rayon is her healthiest and heaviest. She’s not quite the hot mess she ends up toward the end of the film.

I especially liked waxing off all her eyebrows and being able to do those fun looks where the eyeshadow comes up on the brow. I came up with the idea that Rayon would be influenced by her mother, the first female she probably had contact with in the beauty world. And Rayon would be influenced by actresses of the ‘60s because that’s when her mom was in her heyday. So I choose Jane Forth, actress Brigitte Bardot, model Twiggy and there was also a shout out to Serena from “Bewitched.” Because this was set in 1985 and Rayon is a cool cat, she was also inspired by actresses and singers of the ’80s. So there was also a nod to Dolly Parton and a Pat Benatar look as well.

Were there any scenes in the film that were particularly emotional for you?

Absolutely. Watching the film after so many times, there were scenes where I just couldn’t help but burst out crying — two of them being when Rayon is looking at herself in the mirror right before she dies, and she’s putting on makeup to try to cover up her lesions. She says, I’m going to be a pretty, pretty princess no matter what I do when I meet you. And then the scene in the hospital when she says, I don’t want to die.

Both Jared and Matthew were so into their characters … they were their characters. With Matthew, there were times he was talking to [actress] Jennifer Garner’s character about getting treatment and he actually got so scared that he started crying. And it’s not in the script or the film.

They were very emotional times throughout shooting, but we shot so quickly that we didn’t have time to think about it. We just dealt with the emotions and kept shooting.
