Daniel Frazese Reveals How Playing Damian in Mean Girls Helped Him Come Out as Gay

Daniel Franzese played one of the most memorable queer characters in teen comedy history — and the role actually helped him embrace his own sexuality.

In 2004’s Mean Girls, Frazese played Damian, Cady (Lindsay Lohan) and Janis’s (Lizzy Caplan) gay best friend who was responsible for some of the film’s most beloved quotes, from “You go, Glen Coco!” to “I want my pink shirt back!”

But while he portrayed an out and proud gay man, Franzese didn’t come out publicly for 10 years after the movie came out. And his role in the movie played a part in his coming out.

“I think part of the reason it took me so long to feel comfortable with who I was, was I didn’t have the same referential point,” Franzese, now 40, tells PEOPLE. “What Damian did for a lot of queer people and people of size — which I found out later on — it gave them an identity in pop culture where they weren’t made fun of. He’s never made fun of for being big or for being gay.”

Over the years, Franzese learned how many people the movie helped own their sexuality.

“In 2014, I got this fan letter — it said, ‘I don’t know if you’re gay or not; it doesn’t matter.’ It totally matters. We were dealing with Prop 8. We were dealing with marriage equality. All these other issues. And I was on the frontline of all those issues. I had not shied away from being out. I just never really said it professionally,” the actor recalls.

“Then I got this letter, and the guy was like: ‘I’m a grown man now, but I was beat up for being a sissy, I was beat up for being chubby in 8th grade, then you’re movie came out. And in 9th grade, on the first day, the popular senior girls came up to me and said, ‘You’re like Damian. Come sit with us.’ He was like, ‘I know you drastically changed my high school career,’” Frazese says.

That fan letter encouraged the actor to acknowledge his sexuality publicly.

“It just moved me beyond words,” he says. “It was very complex human emotions to feel. And I know that I affected a lot of people’s lives in that movie. I think that that’s such an honor and something that I don’t take lightly.”

After coming out, Franzese took on another complex gay role, playing an HIV-positive man in HBO’s Looking. And these days, Franzese has ventured into standup comedy. He’s currently on the road for his “Yass! You’re Amazing!” comedy tour and is set to headline the Burbank Comedy Festival this weekend.

“Once I came out in 2014, I had the itch,” Franzese says. “I’ve always wanted to do standup my whole life. I attempted to do it early on in my career, but I felt inauthentic — I always trying to change my voice so I wouldn’t sound gay or not say a gay thing. It was so stupid. Now that I feel so comfortable in who I am, I’m able to talk about anything I want freely.”

The brand, which was started by Hechter as a women’s collection in 1962 and moved into men’s and children’s six years later, wants to broaden its reach with a sportswear collection it will present at New York Men’s Day on Monday. The line will launch exclusively with Macy’s in October.

The collection, which is designed in Paris, consists of shirts, sweaters, jerseys, pants, blazers, lightweight outerwear and leather pieces. The line retails from around $ 75 to $ 450.
Hechter is no longer involved with the line, which he sold to Miltenberger-Otto Aulbach GmbH in 1998. The collection is carried in 2,500 points of sale globally and the sportswear is licensed by Shanghai Shenda America LLC.

Daniel W. Fletcher Launches Pop-up Store at Liberty London

IN WITH THE NEW: Up-and-coming men’s wear designer Daniel W. Fletcher has secured Liberty London as his first stockist in the U.K.
The young designer has partnered with Liberty on a three-week pop-up store, which aims to introduce Fletcher’s aesthetic to the Liberty customer and give the brand more visibility. The retailer will then go on to stock Fletcher’s fall range as part of its men’s wear department.
“I have been talking to Liberty for a while now but we waited until we could launch something properly. I didn’t want it to get lost on a rail at the back of a store. ‘Walking Dead’ Actor Daniel Newman Comes Out As LGBT

Walking Dead” actor Daniel Newman opened up about his sexuality publicly for the first time, coming out as LGBT to fans on his social media platforms.

The 35-year-old star, who has also appeared in “The Dark Night Rises” and “Sex and the City,” first made the announcement on Twitter Thursday evening.

Though he stopped short of using the words “gay” or “bisexual” in reference to himself, Newman elaborated further in an emotional, nearly-seven-minute YouTube video. The star said he felt compelled to come out after volunteering at a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth in the clip, which can be viewed below.

“I was helping out and volunteering at some homeless youth shelters, and this girl came up to me. She was like, ‘Thank you so much for helping out with [LGBTQ kids], and she said it like she didn’t deserve it,” Newman said. “She said, ‘Because you’re straight.’” When the actor told the girl that he wasn’t, in fact, straight, she informed him that coming out could “help change our lives.”

That encounter, he said, “hit me like a gut punch. I realized how important it is, in this day and age, to be visible, have people know who you are.” After noting that he wanted to to steer clear of politics, he added, “You see at this moment how rights are getting stripped from people so quickly. Who are the easiest people to take rights from? People that are invisible, people that are staying silent.”

“When you are accomplishing incredible things and you’re hiding who you are, you’re hurting hundreds of millions of people,” he said. “So, by us staying quiet, we’re partially to blame for kids getting beat up and ridiculed, stereotypes and stigmas. If you don’t like them, you need to be visible, to change them.” He went to offer praise for men who have been labeled “sissies” for their effeminate behavior, noting, “They’re the strongest because they didn’t have a choice. Those guys are incredible and so, so amazing.”

In a Friday interview with People, Newman cited his southern upbringing as the reason why he’d remained silent about his sexuality until this week. “I didn’t really think about it really as hiding. I never thought of myself as being in a closet or hidden,” he said. “It just was that I didn’t really feel like talking about my private life.”

Thrilled to see you living authentically, Daniel!

‘Get Out’ Star Daniel Kaluuya: I’m ‘Too Black’ For Britain, ‘Not Black Enough’ For America

Actor Daniel Kaluuya doesn’t think he should have to prove his blackness.

In a new interview with GQ magazine, the “Get Out” star shared his thoughts on Samuel L. Jackson’s recent critique that black British actors may not be able to relate to black Americans. For Kaluuya, Jackson’s comments reflect his personal experiences of being ostracized in different settings for being dark-skinned.

“When I’m around black people I’m made to feel ‘other’ because I’m dark-skinned,” he said. “I’ve had to wrestle with that, with people going ‘You’re too black.’ Then I come to America and they say, ‘You’re not black enough.’ I go to Uganda, I can’t speak the language. In India, I’m black. In the black community, I’m dark-skinned. In America, I’m British.”

The actor went on to add that similar to black Americans’ vast range of social issues, the London’s black community has confronted oppression, prejudice, and police brutality.

Since Jackson’s much-discussed statements ― which drew criticism from British actor John Boyega ― made headlines last week, Jackson later told the Associated Press that his comments were not necessarily  a “slam” towards the performers, but rather an assessment about how “Hollywood works in an interesting sort of way sometimes.”

Despite Jackson’s commentary, Kaluuya says it’s not his intent to be a “culture vulture “ of the black American experience, but rather focus on telling black stories.

“This is the frustrating thing, in order to prove that I can play this role, I have to open up about the trauma that I’ve experienced as a black person,” he said. “I have to show off my struggle so that people accept that I’m black. No matter that every single room I go to I’m usually the darkest person there…I kind of resent that mentality. I’m just an individual.”

How To Ride the Motivation Wave and Overcome Distraction By, Daniel DiPiazza

For 20 years, filmmaker Sooyong Park has devoted his life to the study, recording and preservation of the wild Siberian tiger. 2-3 times a year, he leaves his family for months at a time to stay in the frozen forests of Eastern Russia, Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula in hopes of catching a glimpse of the great cats.

To withstand temperatures of -30*C, he builds himself an underground igloo, reinforced with sticks. To sustain himself, he packs hundreds of tiny rations of nuts and seeds in plastic wrap. When he’s thirsty, he drinks the snow.

Then, he takes out his camera and waits.

Sometimes days. Sometimes weeks. Sometimes months — waiting for the tigers to show up. And even when they do show up, he’s not allowed to show his excitement. He has to be absolutely focused in hopes of getting one, fleeting picture without scaring them away (or getting himself killed).

And because of Sooyong’s unconventional ability to focus on his work with tigers, the world has gotten some of the rarest footage ever captured of tiger behavior in the wild. Among his best finds, Park has captured some of the only footage of tigers giving birth in the wild, playing with each other at various ages, and doing other incredible things that nobody in the world has been able to record.

After watching a documentary about him, I immediately started thinking about what it must be like to focus on one thing so intensely for such a long period of time. It blew my mind.

Imagine being alone in that igloo, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No updates on social, no contact, no toilet.

“Day 47, still waiting on tigers. Anyone else up? Lol!”

The funny thing is, it’s a GOOD thing he was so isolated out there.

Having contact with the outside world and constantly being wrapped up in the flow of daily gossip soundbites would have robbed him of the chance to actually focus on what he came there to see. And the same thing is happening to you and I every single day.

Focus in today’s world is harder than ever.

Unlike Sooyong Park, most of our jobs don’t require us to be out in nature for extended periods of time — so it’s much harder to escape the social media tractor beam. Most people can’t even complete a single task from beginning to end. It’s no surprise, really. Just take a look at your environment. The way that our culture and society is set up is not conducive itself to maintaining discipline or focus — partly because we’ve made ourselves increasingly available to outside intrusion

A few decades ago, there were just a handful of ways to contact each other: snail mail, home telephone or in person. That was it. Fast forward to today, and there is an almost infinite amount of ways to “check in” on somebody that you want to talk to.

On my phone alone I have:

  1. apple imessage app (for personal texts)
  2. Facebook messenger (for fb direct messages)
  3. Facebook app (for comments and updates)
  4. Twitter app
  5. Facebook Mentions (for fan page messages/updates)
  6. Whatsapp (international texts and calls)
  7. snapchat (for nudes??)
  8. Instagram (can receive DMs)
  9. Skype (for group calls and international video chat)
  10. GroupMe (I use it for social media interest groups)
  11. Kik (strictly for communicating with Instagram partners)
  12. Gmail (email)

That’s 12 different ways to get in touch with me at any given moment! (Not including making an actual phone call! That, my friends, is DESIGNED distraction.)

Everything in our lives is brilliantly designed to make us keep coming back for more..while getting less and less done. It’s almost impossible to avoid. This isn’t an excuse to fall into the Candy Crush oblivion and never return…but it’s just a fact. The technology you use every single day is designed to drain your focus and decrease your attention span.

I’ve said it before, but with so much distraction, uninterrupted focus is a rare superpower these days. One of my friends, also named Daniel, says it this way: “Give the greatest philosophers of ancient history Facebook and I’ll show you all the books they didn’t write.”

Developing focus by creating

Focus is a learned skill, and attention can be developed like a muscle. The more you focus on training this skill, the easier it becomes to “switch on.”

The most common response to lack of focus is attempting to use your will to overpower the distraction. Maybe you even delete annoying apps and pledge to only check your messages every fortnight. These ideas sound good…but we know they never end up working long term.
Eventually, you’ll have to use your apps. And you’re going to want to check your email. Being focused isn’t about cultivating greater willpower or hoping that the world goes back to a “simpler” time.

You’re most likely going to be on social media. This is just part of our new social ecosystem. Get over it. Most of us want to use these tools — so it’s not about eliminating them, it’s about learning how to adapt your lives to them. What you spend your time on is a result of what you do habitually. If you can change your habits, you can increase your ability to focus and change your entire life.

Learn to ride the “Motivation Wave” for as long as possible

Stanford professor B.J. Fogg really digs into the heart of our discussion today and delivers a framework to be productive according to the time of day.

He looks at motivation a bit differently than most. According to Fogg, motivation is a wave with peaks and valleys — and the goal isn’t to stay at a constant peak — but rather, to recognize the valleys and adjust your effort accordingly.

According to Fogg, it’s not realistic to expect focused attention from yourself at all times. Instead, the key is to become more aware of your daily (or even hourly) fluctuations in motivation — and do the hardest things in your day when you’re feeling the best.

For example, you might use this approach to “trick” yourself into working out every morning.
You know that when you get up in the morning and you’ve just had your first meal, your willpower is at the highest point it will be all day. You haven’t checked your email yet or jumped into the maelstrom that is social media.

If you hurry up and get to the gym, you can take full advantage of the natural motivation wave that hits you first thing in the morning — and if you ride it carefully, you can surf those feelings of optimism into the early afternoon by maintaining your energy until 12 or 1pm.

In anticipation of this wave, you’ll stack all your hardest work between 10am and 1pm. All the calls you don’t want to make. All the tedious emails you don’t want to answer and all the boring work you have to plow through. You need to do them when you’re at your peak state.

You already know that if you wait until you’re already feeling the afternoon dip to start force feeding yourself the most dreaded tasks, you’ll never get them done.

Do what you can when you’re feeling good, then purposely find easier things to do when your wave is dying down.

I’ve organized my day this way, which is why I wake up at 4:45am and give myself hours of undistracted time to get my hardest projects done before the rest of the world even wakes up!

I can easily say I’ve 10xed my productivity in the past 6 months alone since adopting this new routine.

Lacoste continues to mine its history in golf by signing American professional golfer Daniel Berger as its latest ambassador.
Beginning this month, the 23-year-old will wear Lacoste apparel both on and off the golf course.

Harambe and ‘Damn Daniel’ Among The Memes That Won The Internet In 2016

2016 has widely been considered a tough year. But not all of 2016 was a downer. The Internet, as it often does, has provided plenty of hilarity in the form of viral memes to lighten things up.

We took a look at Google’s 2016 search trends and found the top 10 most sought-after memes of the year. From Harambe memes to the angry Michael Phelps face, these Internet creations will go down in online history as classics.

1. Harambe

When Harambe the gorilla was shot in order to protect a small child who had wandered into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, public outrage ensued. The Internet, however, had other plans for Harambe, and used the incident as the basis for a series of viral memes that were hard to miss on social media, making Harambe the top trending meme of the year.

It’s no surprise that a meme making light of an animal’s death caused quite a bit of controversy, especially with the Cincinnati Zoo. The zoo deleted its social media accounts amidst a barrage of Harambe memes. During the 2016 presidential election, people even joked that they voted for Harambe as a candidate.

2. Damn Daniel

The “Damn Daniel” trend all started with a viral tweet, which featured a video of teenager Daniel Lara in his white Vans sneakers. Throughout the clip, Lara’s friend comments on his shoes, saying “damn Daniel.” You have to watch it to truly understand why this is Internet gold, and the second top trending meme of the year

3. Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go is not only the top Google search of 2016, it is also the third most viral meme of the year. With the game’s U.S. release on July 6, it makes sense that only a few weeks later, the Internet had already gone to work creating memes.

4. Dat Boi

It’s difficult to trace the origin of “Dat Boi,” the meme featuring an animated frog on a unicycle, but several sources believe it was inspired by an older meme on Tumblr from 2015. While pinpointing the source for its popularity is tricky, “Dat Boi” skyrocketed to viral fame in May 2016, when the vast majority of the “Dat Boi” memes were created.

Adding even more humor to this meme, it appears the image may have come from a physics textbook, according to this Twitter user’s discovery:

5. SpongeBob Caveman

Perhaps one of the most visually hilarious meme trends of the year was SpongeBob Caveman, also known as Primitive Sponge. For any SpongeBob SquarePants fans out there, you’ll likely remember the 1999 caveman episode that created the magical creature that is SpongeGar. Fast forward to May 2016, when a Reddit user decided to bring back SpongeGar, sparking the viral meme trend that is now known as SpongeBob Caveman. This timing explains why a spike in Google searches for the meme started in late May.

6. Michael Phelps

If you watched the Rio Olympics, you’re likely familiar with the angry Michael Phelps meme. When the camera featured Phelps’ face in the holding room, as he was listening to music and preparing for his 200m butterfly semifinal, the Internet immediately moved to meme-ify the moment.

What resulted from this unintentional death stare was a series of memes that we are certainly not going to forget anytime soon.

7. Donald Trump

The Donald Trump memes started trending during the first presidential debate in September, and saw its biggest spike in Google searches in early November, when the election took place. Largely created as a response against Trump’s policies and statements, this meme trend was met with controversy from Trump supporters.

8. “Making A Murderer”

The Netflix original documentary “Making A Murderer” left many viewers convinced that Steven Avery was framed and innocent. This inspired a series of comedic memes in his support. Google searches for the memes spiked around mid-January, about a month after the show premiered on December 18.

9. Ken Bone

During the second U.S. presidential debate on September 29, undecided voters had the chance to ask candidates their questions directly. Ken Bone inquired about the candidates’ energy policies, and immediately became an Internet sensation.

The memes started rolling out within the next few days, causing a spike in Google searches.

10. Birdman

During an appearance on the radio show “The Breakfast Club,” rapper Birdman went on a rant and abruptly walked off the show, thus sparking yet another viral meme trend. The first to poke fun at the awkward interview was an Instagram user who uploaded an edited version of the video, with Michael Jordan’s crying face over Birdman’s:

Daniel Radcliffe Can’t Stop Laughing During ‘Water War’ With Jimmy Fallon

Hopefully Harry Potter brought his gillyweed.

“Victor Frankenstein” star Daniel Radcliffe took on Jimmy Fallon in a “Water War” on Tuesday, and he just couldn’t keep it together. Radcliffe started laughing almost immediately, and once he got to dump water on Fallon, he pretty much didn’t stop.

Radcliffe played a wizard for most of his childhood, so he’s used to doing pretty amazing things. Once he shocked people by pretending he was the receptionist at Nylon magazine, and during a previous visit on “The Tonight Show,” he expertly rapped the “Alphabet Aerobics.” But that stuff aside, seeing Harry Potter apparently get hit by a giggling charm is just as magical as anything.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Sorry, Muggles! Daniel Radcliffe Won’t Be In ‘Sharknado 3’

”Sharknado 3″ finally gave us a reason to say, “Oh, hell no!”

After Daniel Radcliffe revealed he was a big “Sharknado” fan, rumors of a possible cameo in “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” started flying around faster than a Golden Snitch. (That’s fast, y’all. If you catch it, you basically win the Quidditch match.) The actor fawned over the idea during an interview with Ryan Seacrest, and he even came up with scenarios for his awesome death scene.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, “Sharknado 3” writer Thunder Levin said he heard Radcliffe was a fan and even wrote a part for him in the new movie, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

“Much as I had hoped that would happen, it did not work out. There was some sort of a scheduling conflict and he couldn’t do it,” said Levin.

(You’re a disappointment, Harry.)

Image: TheTerribleDesire

When asked about Radcliffe’s potential part, Levin revealed the “Harry Potter” star was going to be “someone working at Universal Studios,” but he added, “That’s about as far as I can go.”

HuffPost suggested it would be amazing if the actor were actually working at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, but Levin said Warner Bros. probably wouldn’t have been a fan.

Though Radcliffe isn’t in the film, the character he would’ve played still made the cut. Levin says, “Sort of a version of that character is still in the film, but it changed significantly once it was not gonna be him.”

So there you go, Muggles. Make sure to look out for the part Radcliffe would’ve played, and just imagine how great it would’ve been to see Harry Potter get eaten by a shark. We know at least one dude who will.

The Death of Sweet Mister By Daniel Woodrell (Paperback)

The Death of Sweet Mister By Daniel Woodrell (Paperback)

Overview Shug Akins is a lonely, overweight thirteen-year-old boy. His mother, Glenda, is the one person who loves him-she calls him Sweet Mister and attempts to boost his confidence and give him hope for his future. Shuggie’s purported father, Red, is a brutal man with a short fuse who mocks and despises the boy. Into this small-town Ozarks mix comes Jimmy Vin Pearce, with his shiny green T-bird and his smart city clothes. When he and Glenda begin a torrid affair, a series of violent events is inevitably set in motion. The outcome will break your heart. “This is Daniel Woodrell’s third book set in the Ozarks and, like the other two, Give Us a Kiss and Tomato Red, it peels back the layers from lives already made bare by poverty and petty crime.” -Otto Penzler, “Penzler Pick, 2001” Product details Isbn-13: 9780316206143, 978-0316206143 Author: Daniel Woodrell Publisher: Little, Brown & Company Publication date: 2012-04-24 About Wordery Wordery is one of the UK’s largest online booksellers. Daniel Radcliffe Has Probably Traveled Through Time Just To Mess With Us All

Are we sure time-turners don’t exist? Because Daniel Radcliffe looks an awful lot like the men and women in these old-timey photos unearthed by people on Reddit.

For a man who once wore the same outfit for months just to mess with the paparazzi, we wouldn’t put it past him to pull a prank of this scale — if, you know, magic were real. Which it’s not. Probably.

We’ll have to wait for October to roll around for his next onscreen performance, but maybe there’s a yellowing snapshot in an old shoebox tucked away in someone’s attic waiting to be discovered before then.

“Not-Daniel Radcliffe” was really living it up in the past …

Listening to some jams in the 1940s.

Reddit user gaztruman posted this supposedly 70-year-old photo of a crowd at Band on the Wall Manchester, a music venue.

Kidding around with some pals.

Reddit user microwavetea posted this photo, captioned “My grandma is a time-traveling Daniel Radcliffe.” That guy in the middle did not get the joke.

Making the most of those golden high-school days.

Pictured above with a wee Andy Samberg, Reddit user tackytick says they found this photo in an old yearbook from 1978.

Looking prim and proper with a string of pearls — and some very familiar glasses.

Reddit user gurbla posted this photo of a time-traveling wizard!!! respectable gentlewoman.

Posing prettily for the camera.

According to Reddit user Waldenponds16, this is lady is a prostitute in the 1800s. All we see is Harry having some fun.

Melanie Daniel: ‘Piecemaker’ at Shulamit Gallery, Venice Beach

2015-05-31-1433093239-4103064-Long_Way.png

The Long Way Home, 2014. Oil on canvas, 90 X 140 cm.

Canadian-born artist Melanie Daniel, whose work is currently on view at the Shulamit Gallery in Venice Beach, has lived in Israel for the past twenty years, including seven years in the mixed Arab-Jewish city of Jaffa. Her most recent paintings, which are vivid and thematically multivarious, are ruminations on personal identity that also reflect the hybrid culture and socio-political tensions of her adopted homeland.

I recently interviewed Melanie Daniel to ask her about her background, her art and her sources of artistic inspiration.

John Seed Interviews Melanie Daniel:

Melanie Daniel

Tell me about growing up in Canada and how it shaped you.

I grew up in a city called Kelowna, British Columbia, nestled in a beautiful valley of forests, lakes and orchards. It is extremely arid and blazingly hot in the summer (up to 40 °C) and then winter inevitably comes and outdoor life continues on the ski slopes or in the gentler woods for snow-shoeing and tobogganing. My younger sister and brother and I were always outdoors in all seasons hunting for critters and frogs, fishing in the creeks or excavating clay from the cliffs behind our grandparents’ house. We returned daily to our childhood haunts where only kids went, a parallel universe for us and our posse.

Those were different times, I realize now, and we were never supervised. Free to roam, we invented games, dares, bizarre rituals, and protocol for deep forest sport. The neighborhood creek, an all-season kid headquarters, also served as the final resting place for countless pet gerbils and lizards. At sunset, our deceased beloved pets were regularly sent downstream on blazing Viking ships improvised with popsicle sticks. On less somber occasions, being the avid pyromaniacs that we were, more than once we watched from a safe distance as the local firefighters extinguished the contraband Playboys that had started it all. My brother and his nervous friends would frequently incinerate their forbidden erotic stash once discovered by us, their older sisters, the killjoys.

Although we would have happily watched endless hours of TV sitcoms and cartoons, my parents were frequently heard saying, “shut that thing off and go outside”, which we grudgingly did. But “outside” never disappointed. It was always a place to escape into and to be happy. The dead silence of snow, the smell of cut grass, the deafening drone of cicadas in afternoons and the melancholy return of autumn and the dreaded classroom – the reliable cycle of my formative years in Canada. It has never left me.

Wrestling Bears, 2015. Oil on canvas, 99 X 101 cm.

Why did you move to Israel and what kind of culture shock did you feel?

Love brought me to this place. Not adventure and certainly not ideology. In the early ’90’s I travelled through India and one day I set my eyes upon a curly haired, dark stranger. I was sure he was Italian. I knew nothing of Israelis. After a while, each returned to his respective country and only many months later did we commence a slow correspondence through posted letters. Email was not yet widely available. Rather impulsively, I dropped my final year of university studies in history and philosophy and boarded a plane for Israel, certain that I would be greeted by a swollen silver moon over Jerusalem. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Jerusalem was a rough city, its denizens crustier still. I returned briefly to Canada to make some money tree-planting and ultimately to figure out what to do about this man. Eventually I did return to Jerusalem, and I knew that my success or failure would depend less on matters of the heart and more about what I would do there.

Soon after my arrival, the prime minister was assassinated, later the second Intifada was unleashed, and all hell broke loose. It lasted five years and it changed everyone, deeply. Perennial engagement with mortality is humbling. I live in constant proof of the fragility of life and it’s something that follows me everywhere. And although I don’t believe that this knowledge gives me any advantages in life it has sharpened a keen regard I’ve always held for the present tense and a solid respect for the material/natural world. Communion with nature has always been enough for me and requires no further pontificating from men with snowy beards.

The culture shock I experienced here was an ongoing hiccup, lasting years. Israelis are without a doubt the most tactless humans on earth but this abrasive quality has a very important flip side. They also happen to be the most generous, candid, creative and humorous people I have ever met. I have learned much from my Israeli friends. The other culture shock was Israel’s natural landscape, the desert and its open unforgiving sky. I recoiled at my first encounter with the desert; I felt I had no where to hide. It took me many years to embrace this existential landscape as it was nothing like the towering pine giants that protected me in my youth.

Patchwork Landing, 2015. Oil on canvas, 140 X 160 cm

Your art has been characterized as dreamlike. Have your narratives always been this way?

Yes, I think so. Even at school I was painting when the craft was decidedly unpopular and to the dismay of my instructors, I was also bent on weaving impenetrable stories into the work. For me, the paintings invent the places and characters, not the other way around. My paintings are so much about physicality which despite their reliance on narrative are still somehow resistant to language, interpretation, or even memory.

I hope to induce a sense of dislocation by being both strange and recognizable. By keeping the narrative dreamlike and just beyond reach, I let the viewer bring something of their own to the painting. The narrative can unfold once the sense of familiarity recedes from the encounter, those scenes familiar to us through the landscape genre. My art is anti-nostalgic because I don’t try rehashing actual experiences but invent them at the edge of my perception.

Scruffy’s Emerald Secret, 2014-15. Oil on canvas, 140 X 120 cm

Can you tell me about one of your current paintings and break down some of its narrative and themes?

One piece, Scruffy’s Emerald Secret is a favorite of mine. It’s moodier that the others and I can identify with the bare-footed loner sitting on a tree stump, hunched over his campfire. Behind him looms this tall green patterned tree, a beautiful freak specimen. It shouldn’t be there, but it is. The man shouldn’t be there, but he is. Where is his family? Why is he alone in keeping vigil over this odd tree? This piece is one of several in a group I call Piecemaker in which I incorporate conflicting cultural motifs, embedded traditional Arabic patterns in a Canadian landscape. They can’t be fused and remain irreconcilable. Not unlike quilt-making I “stitch” together disparate symbolic forms and patterns from both of these worlds which have become part of me.

Spellbound, 2014. Oil on canvas, 140 X 180 cm.

As you have dealt with the cultural and political challenges of living and working in Israel, how has your art sustained you?

One of the conditions of my decision to remain here depended on my ability to carve out a corner for myself, professionally. Making art and functioning competitively in that arena was a necessity for happiness and my own sanity. I started from zero and got a very good education and training in the arts. Self discipline was already established from my previous five years at Canadian universities, and I was very sure about how I wanted things to play out. Unlike many immigrants who arrive as adults, I had a huge advantage: art school was a big lingering bear hug. All of my friends, my political views, professional networks, and direct access to Israel’s cultural carotid artery were all gifted to me during those years. I would not have survived here without it.

The Drifting Patch Tree, 2015. Oil on canvas, 190 X 180 cm

What are your interests outside of art?

My family is the heart of my life, always. Everything else falls into descending order after that. I like being outside as much as possible. As a family, we do a lot of hiking and swimming, and picnics with friends. I live a street away from the Mediterranean Sea and need to see it daily. Most days are started with a run along the sea to stave off cabin fever in my studio.

I’m an avid gardener and a member of a community garden and often get my son’s kindergarten involved with horticulture. It’s important for kids to understand where food comes from and to really see how we’re all part of a shared life cycle. They also get a real sense of pride and ownership from their hard work.

I read a lot, everything from Annie Proulx to Walter Mosley, mostly at night when everyone is asleep. Music, nonstop, but that’s when I’m painting.

Who are some artists who have directly influenced your work?

Daniel Richter: he’s the best living painter as far as I’m concerned. I can look at as his works for hours and they just keep unfolding. Violent and absurd, apocalyptic.

Peter Doig: a constant source of inspiration.

Cecily Brown: fleshy, carnal paintings that just disintegrate and then re-galvanize, pulsing. They take time to get into and you can’t hurry them. This is one of the things what makes any good painting last. Brown overdoes everything, pushes the painting to the brink and I love that .

Mark Bradford: layer by layer, he builds up a thick-skinned topography from cultural detritus. It’s like he maps out these strange mute neighborhoods replete with their own secrets and you want to scrape down to get to them.

Velazquez: bold mark-making and outbursts of sensuality erupting through thick globs of paint. He didn’t want a smooth porcelain finish but rather wanted to show us the true corporeal surface of paint. For me, moving paint around is a steady point of fascination and Velazquez always delivers the goods in that regard.

Dana Schutz: she’s madly prolific, restless, ballsy, and brilliant. I hit a wall over ten years ago and discovered Dana’s work. It was like rocket fuel for me.

David Lynch: His scenes are permanently lodged in my brain. An unapologetic storyteller of storytelling.

Sally Mann: raw, haunting and achingly personal.

Kwakiutl and Haida art and myths: I grew up with the imagery and stories of First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Masks and totems and legends are always with me even if they don’t find immediate expression in what I do.

PK Page: Canadian poet. Her vivid descriptions of fleeting moments of life hang in the air when I’m working. I just have to reach up and grab them. Here’s a title: “Deaf-Mute in the Pear Tree”.

James Ensor – He literally attacked his canvases with violent gusto, making these taut, weird and nightmarish scenes. Totally unsettling.

Daniel Radcliffe Rapping ‘Alphabet Aerobics’ Is Proof That Magic Does Exist

Harry Potter’s flow is officially riddikulus!

On Tuesday, Daniel Radcliffe stopped by “The Tonight Show” to talk about his new movie “Horns” and revealed that he loves rap music and has a thing for memorizing difficult lyrics. Seeing this as an opportunity for something amazing to happen, Jimmy Fallon then put the actor to the test by getting him to rap Blackalicious’ “Alphabet Aerobics.”

From watching the performance, it’s pretty obvious why the actor was chosen to play a wizard — because this is nothing less than magic.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

The spoof stars Franzese and actor Adrian Anchondo, with cameos from all kinds of San Francisco queers, including the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus.

Daniel Franzese made headlines in April when he officially came out publicly as gay, and then again in August when it was announced that he would be joining the cast of HBO’s Looking for its second season.
