Dave Chappelle Reveals The 1 Way Donald Trump Has Been Good For America

Dave Chappelle Wants Comedians To Stop Making The Same Donald Trump Jokes

Saturday Night Live” is experiencing a creative renaissance and its biggest ratings in two decades under Donald Trump’s presidency. But Dave Chappelle has a message for fellow comedians enjoying the fruits of the administration’s blunders: “Trump’s kind of bad for comedy.”

Speaking with CBC on Sunday, Chappelle offered his take on the current president’s relationship with his chosen profession, agreeing that comedy has “a role to play under Trump,” but warning that there’s a risk of regurgitating the same material.

“Most comics in the states are starting to do the same jokes, just because Trump is so on everybody’s mind,” he said. “So it’ll be nice when we don’t have to talk about him that much.”

Despite his concerns over Trump’s omnipresence, Chappelle said he still believes the state of comedy today is “strong and healthy,” citing the return of some of his favorites like Chris Rock and Jon Stewart to the game.

“I think that most of these guys you see working are wildly courageous,” he explained. “It’s such a strange time, being bombarded with so much information, and I think comedy is an important valve for syphoning through all that.”

In November, Chappelle hosted the first “Saturday Night Live” episode after the election and delivered a stirring opening monologue in response to Trump’s surprise win. After joking that America actually elected “an internet troll as our president,” he recalled a recent visit to the White House for a BET event that made him feel hopeful about the country’s direction.

“I saw how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised, and it made me feel hopeful, and it made me feel proud to be an American,” Chappelle said. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

For more from Chappelle, you can watch his two comedy specials that premiere on Netflix this month.

Dave Grohl’s Doctor Joined The Foo Fighters To Cover The White Stripes

Orthopedic doctors can be rock ‘n’ roll stars too, if just for one night.

During the Foo Fighters’ show at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday, Dave Grohl’s doctor joined the band for a White Stripes cover — typical orthopedic surgeon duties. Dr. Lew C. Schon is the physician who performed surgery on Grohl’s leg, which the frontman broke during a stage-jump in Sweden last month.

During the Foo Fighters’ stop in Boston, Schon came on stage to help cover The White Stipes’ “Seven Nation Army.” While Grohl performed from his light-up guitar throne, which he thought up while on morphine in the hospital, the doctor joined his patient on lead vocals for the White Stripes classic, and totally killed it. (Watch out, Jack White.)

After Schon left the stage, Grohl explained to the crowd who he was.”Holy shit, that’s actually my doctor,” Grohl said. “What a badass.” If you need orthopedic work and want to do karaoke after, Dr. Schon is your guy.

Paul McCartney And Dave Grohl Performed Beatles’ Classic ‘I Saw Her Standing There’

What would it sound like if the Beatles reached nirvana? Probably a lot like Dave Grohl performing a Beatles song with Paul McCartney.

During McCartney’s show at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night, the former Nirvana drummer joined the former Beatle for a performance of “I Saw Her Standing There,” from the Beatles’ debut album, “Please Please Me.” This isn’t the first time McCartney and Grohl have performed the song, though. The two previously played the Beatles’ classic at the 2009 Grammy Awards, with Grohl on the drums.

McCartney and Grohl also previously worked together on “Cut Me Some Slack” from the soundtrack to Grohl’s documentary “Sound City.” The track, which they worked on with Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, earned them the Best Rock Song award at the 56th annual Grammys.

Saturday night’s London show also came with another big surprise. McCartney played “Temporary Secretary” from his album “McCartney II,” which Rolling Stone has called one of “the 12 weirdest Paul McCartney songs.” It was McCartney’s first live performance of the song since its release in 1980.

McCartney is playing a second show at the O2 Arena again on Sunday, so more surprises are likely in store.

Can We Say So Long, but Not Goodbye, to Dave?

2015-05-18-1431992060-4153180-DavidLetterman_Huffington.jpg

While the show business community and the audience for David Letterman are in the process of saying thanks and goodbye, I’ve had a recurring thought: why must we say goodbye? Many of us are going to have a difficult withdrawal from our dose of Dave, especially the comedy community, and I’m just hoping his absence from our lives is a brief one.

I first met David Letterman back in 1977 when the late comedian George Miller introduced me to him. I was just a kid and a newcomer and I was starting to work as a comedian. One day Robin Williams invited me to open for him and David Letterman at the Bla Bla Cafe on Ventura Blvd. During my set the audience was so quiet I thought they were all deaf and needed sign language, until I finally got a good laugh on this joke: “I was at a dance club and I asked one of the girls to dance with me. She was, as they say in my country, extremely well fed. While slow dancing, she came in real close to me and whispered in my ear, ‘what do you use in your country for protection?’ I said, ‘a knife or a stick.'” I was so pleased to get any response that I said, “That’s my closer, good night” and bolted from the stage. Later that night during Robin’s set, he was feeling badly for me and brought me back onto the stage and started teaching me Shakespeare. That got a lot of laughs, the audience really enjoy it.

After the show, David gave me suggestions on how to fix some of my jokes. One joke he fixed, wound up getting laughs whenever I performed it afterwards. The way I told the joke was, “Everybody always gave me advice on how to pick up girls in America by spending a lot of money on them. So I met a girl and I said, ‘I would like to buy you a piano.'” David said I would get more laughs if I added a response from the girl. He said that she should reply “I would rather have an organ.” I did that joke Dave’s way, and always got lots of laughs. David was like that with everybody. He was very creative and giving, always offering other comedians help.

In 1979 when the comedians went on strike because we weren’t getting paid, David was already making money, but made it a point to help out. I remember one night we were on the picket line and David and Tom Dreesen showed up; I found out later that David guest hosted that night for Johnny Carson, but he showed up to help his fellow comics further their cause.

If it wasn’t for comics like David Letterman, Tom Dreesen, George Miller, Jay Leno – and many others – the comedians today would not be getting paid at the established clubs. I always remind the comedians that those individuals were the pioneers, who struck to get them their due. For those interested in that history, I recommend the excellent book written by Los Angeles Times editor Bill Knoedelseder, called I’m Dying up Here.

David never stopped helping comedians. Like his mentor Carson, Dave helped expose and promote stand-up comics on his show. In fact, he exposed more comedians on his TV show than any subsequent late night host. He never forgot his roots, and he never forgot those who performed with him on his rise. Tom Dreesen, Jeff Altman, Johnny Dark, Paul Mooney, George Wallace, Jimmie Walker, John Witherspoon, and so many others, were all on The Late Show many times, because Dave knew it was an important way to get them known.

David truly is a person filled with care and compassion. When David found out about George Miller’s diagnosis with leukemia, he arranged to secure a two bedroom apartment with a 24 hour nurse for him. David paid for everything. After a few years, Miller’s health deteriorated and near the end, Dave – even with his busy schedule – managed to fly in from New York to spend a few hours with his comic buddy. I joined Dave and Tom Dreesen and Gary Mule Deer at George’s apartment and watched Dave give him encouragement and positive reinforcement. A few months later, George died from a blood clot in his head and I had to pass on that tragic news to everybody including David. He was devastated.

David is a rare person, extremely funny, and extremely generous with a big heart. Not only does he help comedians, his charity work is unmatched and practically unknown. He has a foundation for underprivileged kids and nobody knows about it. I only found out about it from one of my Comedy Camp kids.

If I headed any network, I would never let a comedy treasure like him retire. David is still at the top of his game and has so much more to give. If he doesn’t want to work nightly anymore, perhaps one of the networks can get him to do a few specials each year. He is a national treasure and a “doctor of the soul” whose sense of fun has cured many of us from our doldrums. I’ve never seen all of the Laugh Factory comedians in agreement on any one thing, but they all seem to agree on David’s importance and contributions to comedy. It seems that these feelings are also shared by comics all around the country.

So my mantra is–so long Dave, enjoy the break, but we ain’t saying goodbye.

Remembering Dave Goldberg, The Ultimate Mensch

Most of us are lucky if we have even one great passion in our lives. Dave Goldberg had many more: his wife Sheryl Sandberg, his children, his friends and colleagues, music, poker, and the Minnesota Vikings.

On Dave’s birthday last fall, a group of friends joined him at his home to watch the Vikings play the Packers. Dave did something that caught me off guard. At the time, it seemed small. But now it speaks profoundly to one of the many ways that Dave was larger than life.

The game got off to an ugly start. In the first 10 minutes, the Vikings were down 14-0. A typical fan would scream at the coach, start hurling objects at the TV, or give up on the game. But Dave stuck by his team. By halftime, the Vikings were losing 28-0. Dave didn’t budge; he kept rooting for them. In the third quarter, they were down 42-0. By this point, I wasn’t even watching the game. I was watching Dave in awe — because every time the Packers scored, he cheered louder for the Vikings. The further behind his team fell, the more he stood up for them. Even after losing 42-10, Dave still loved his team.

That’s who Dave Goldberg was. When your chips were down, he doubled down. As Sheryl expressed it Tuesday in the single most beautiful speech I’ve ever heard, “Dave was my rock.”

Dave was the CEO of SurveyMonkey, and he hosted me to speak there a year ago. When he gave the introduction, I was so embarrassed by his kind words that I could hardly speak. I knew I didn’t deserve his praise, but I wanted to earn a fraction of it.

Among the hundreds of talks I gave that year, it was the most extraordinary audience I had. Just as Dave did with everyone he met, the SurveyMonkey team instantly made me feel accepted. They listened more intently, and laughed more loudly, than any group I had addressed. I was so astonished by their generosity and curiosity that I hung around afterward, hounding various employees to find out how they had created such a positive culture. Over and over, I heard the same thing: the secret ingredient was Dave.

It was clear that Dave made a concerted effort to recruit people who cared about others, who loved to learn and have fun. But his team stressed something far more meaningful: Dave built that culture by example. His helpfulness, inquisitiveness and joy were contagious. His employees wanted to be like him.

Great leaders build things that outlast them. Inspired by Dave’s example, SurveyMonkey will continue to thrive. This week, the teams worked late to finish projects that mattered most to Dave, and used the hashtag #makedaveproud.

When leaders are admired, it’s usually for what they do for the company. But Dave’s team admired him for what he did for them. Dave saw and brought out the best in others.

His goodness moved us even more than his greatness.

I’ve spent a dozen years studying generosity, and there is no one who embodied it like Dave. Touching tributes have extolled him as a loving father and husband, the heart and soul of Silicon Valley, a lifelong advocate for women, best friend to many, a compassionate leader, and a gracious and generous connector who was bright, kind, humble, and universally admired and liked.

Like his wife, her parents, and his own parents, Dave lived his life in service of others. He was an advocate for SurveyMonkey Contribute, which has donated over $ 5 million to charity in exchange for people taking surveys. He was a dedicated benefactor of a wide range of important causes, particularly in education and healthcare. But he rarely spoke about his philanthropic work.

“David Goldberg embodied the definition of a real leader — someone who was always looking for ways to empower others,” President Obama wrote. “He was generous and kind with everybody, and cared less about the limelight than making sure that the people he worked with and loved succeeded in whatever they did.”

Dave was quiet about his contributions because he was modest, but also because he genuinely took more joy in the success of others than his own. His startup was streaming music online before most people had even heard of the internet, but he didn’t talk about that. He grew SurveyMonkey from 12 employees to 500, building it into a billion-dollar company, but he didn’t talk about that. As he wisely noted last year, his best advice for leaders was to “Stop talking. Ask and listen.”

A little over a month ago, I saw Dave for the last time. As always, there was no handshake; he greeted me with a teddy bear hug. When I asked him what was new in his life, he immediately said the highlight was the Lean In Together campaign. He beamed with pride at the prospect of fathers becoming more involved with their children, husbands becoming 50-50 partners, and men becoming more supportive of women at work.

Dave was Sheryl’s biggest fan, and he cheered for her even more passionately than the Vikings. When she was writing Lean In, she didn’t want to put her picture on the cover or share her personal stories. She wanted the book to be about progress for women, not about her. Dave knew the movement needed a champion. It needed a human face and voice. He encouraged her to lean in.

Queen Elizabeth II said that grief is the price we pay for love, and for Dave, the grief is immeasurable. My heart is aching for Sheryl and their children. It is also hurting deeply for the world.

I don’t believe this happened for a reason, but it has given us all a reason to be more present parents, more loving spouses, more supportive friends, and more caring leaders. The overwhelming sentiment from everyone who knew Dave is that he inspired us to be better human beings. And he had that effect on us throughout his life, long before we lost him. “Things will never be the same,” Sheryl said, “but the world is better for the years my beloved husband lived.”

There is little that can bring solace in this time, but there is one memory of Dave that I will cherish forever. In the spirit of candor, Sheryl is not the world’s biggest football fan. But on his last birthday, when Dave walked in the door, she and the kids were decked out in Vikings jerseys.

Dave broke out in the biggest grin imaginable, and I have never seen a person happier. He loved his family with all his heart, and he knew they loved him the same way.

For those who have inquired about how to honor Dave’s memory, his mother Paula has spent her life helping children with disabilities. For the past four decades, she has run the PACER Center, which exists to enhance the quality of life for children and youth with disabilities, and their families. The Goldberg family has asked that you please direct donations to the David B. Goldberg Endowment, c/o Pacer Center, 8161 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington, MN, 55437.

‘Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities,’ Dave Naz Book, Explores The Gender Spectrum

A compelling new book showcases the faces of individuals identifying across the trans, genderqueer and gender nonconforming spectrum.

From photographer Dave Naz comes Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities, a photo and essay book that he hopes will contribute to the emerging global conversation surrounding gender identity and the human condition, as well as show that not all individuals fit into the boxes society deems “correct.”

genderqueer2

The Huffington Post chatted with Naz this week about Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities, his goals for this project and what readers can expect from the book.

The Huffington Post: Why did you decide this book was important?
Dave Naz: I went into the project photographing subjects that I felt had beauty that defied gender. This all started with Drew DeVeaux, Jiz Lee and Syd Blakovich. They also have great style, which makes for great images. Once I started started meeting people within this small community and hearing their stories, the idea for the book started to take shape. I think it’s important to put it out there and see if something clicks with the reader.

genderqueer

What are you trying to accomplish with this book?
I hope this book adds to the discussion about trans, gender-fluid and genderqueer individuals, as well as others who don’t identify with the gender they were assigned at birth.

Who contributed to make this book a reality?
Morty Diamond, Jiz Lee, Jenny Factor, Ignacio Rivera and Sarah Burghauser all wrote powerful essays about their lives. Those essays make up the book, along with the people who trusted me to photograph them. To make a book of this kind you have to have a unique publisher. Rare Bird / Barnacle believed in this project and made a beautiful book out of it.

genderqueer3

What do you hope people will take away from this project?
I want people to take away that it’s ok to be who you want to be and to be tolerant and understanding of others and how they present themselves. When I started this project five years ago, I had never heard the terms genderqueer, gender-fluid or gender-neutral. I hope others can learn from this book, as I did while I was making it.

Here here to learn more about Genderqueer: And Other Gender Identities. Naz’s exhibit “Identity” will also be at Coagual Curatorial Gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles until Dec 20th.

Dave Coulier Got Married And His Wedding Was A ‘Full House’ Reunion

Congrats to Dave Coulier and Melissa Bring!

The couple tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Paradise Valley, Montana on July 2, and the guest list was full of familiar faces (because you know Joey Gladstone would never get married with out Danny Tanner and Jesse Katsopolis by his side).

Yes, Coulier’s wedding was practically a “Full House” reunion with former co-stars Bob Saget, Candance Cameron Bure, John Stamos, and Andrea Barber all in attendance. And while even the show’s creator Jeff Franklin was there to witness the 54-year-old actor’s big day, there were a few members of the Tanner family who were missing. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who shared the role of Michelle, were not present for the festivities, nor was Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie.

While the whole cast didn’t make it out to the wedding, it looks like those who did had a wonderful time:

Dave Coulier’s Upcoming Wedding Is Set To Be A ‘Full House’ Reunion

Here’s some big “Full House” news: Dave Coulier is getting married in July and his wedding is gearing up to be a “Full House” reunion! (Contain your excitement, please).

US Weekly reported that Coulier has been secretly engaged to long-time girlfriend Melissa Bring for months and their wedding is set for July 2 in Montana.

“Melissa has been my best friend since I met her nine years ago,” Coulier told US Weekly. “I feel like the luckiest man on the planet. I get to marry my best friend, and she doesn’t mind that I have a really bad gas problem.”

According to E! News, who also confirmed the engagement, Coulier gave Bring an engagement ring in late December, but didn’t actually pop the question until New Year’s Day.

As for the wedding, E! reports that John Stamos, Bob Saget, Lori Laughlin, Candance Cameron-Bure and other “Full House” alum will be in attendance for the week-long celebration which will include a pig roast, river day, rodeo night, fishing, hiking in Yellowstone and a barbecue.

Sadly, it looks like a day spent binge-watching “Full House” on Netflix will not be on the itinerary. As Coulier recently told HuffPost Live, “Do you know how drunk I’d have to get in order to watch a full episode of ‘Full House’ at this point?”

Fingers crossed it’s wedding-level drunk.

Dave Ware’s Jimmy Fallon Lego Mosaic A Hit With Comedian (PHOTO)

In case you missed it yesterday, my #lego mosaic of Jimmy Fallon. pic.twitter.com/8rgXPx56vT

— Dave Ware (@Brickwares) December 15, 2013

“You never really know how people are going to take the Lego art. He seemed like a guy who would be into it,” Ware told The Huffington Post Alberta.

While there has been no official response by Fallon, Ware’s friend tells him he was impressed by the portrait and thought it was unbelievable that a Lego portrait was even possible.

The mosaic is 3D in nature, with the main portion of the bricks a bit higher than the rest.

This isn’t the first time Ware has made a Lego portrait of a popular personality. He’s been working on mosaics for over six years and created portraits of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and the Dalai Lama among others.

An oil and gas software analyst by day, Ware says he’s been a Lego fan “forever,” and is still hoping to hear back from Fallon personally.

Here’s a look at more amazing creations by Dave Ware:
