Death to Tennis Men’s Spring 2019

Summertime was the prevailing theme for William Watson and Vincent Oshin, the duo behind Death to Tennis. The designers, who are both British, were feeling nostalgic and a bit homesick so they looked to old beachside photographs to inform their lineup, which they said is one of their most colorful collections to date.
They leaned into the old and new, utilizing a color palette consisting of royal blue, purple, yellow, olive red and navy that brought to mind Ralph Lauren and Cross Colours from the Nineties.
These colors lent new life to core items such as graphic T-shirts, hoodies and the McCarthy jacket, which Justin Bieber popularized. They showed these signatures alongside cargo pants with minimal pockets, boxy button-up shirts, cotton parkas and shirt jackets. A long, hooded, colorblocked parka that grazed the ground was a standout.
The suit or matching set was another primary component. Models wore tracksuits, relaxed cotton suits and boxy shirts styled with slightly baggy pants. It was a nice take on tailored pieces that felt hip but not too trendy.
Death to Tennis is known for its original prints and this season it presented a camo pattern, a polo motif and a paint-splattered print.
Last season, the brand put on a

Pa. Woman Called 911 on Ex-Boyfriend Moments Before She Was Stabbed to Death

A Pennsylvania woman called 911 to report her ex-boyfriend was attacking her before she was found dead with stab wounds, PEOPLE confirms.

Bensalem Police Public Safety Director Fred Harran tells PEOPLE that shortly before 7 a.m. on Monday, Teresa Priestley called 911 when William Table began attacking her after she got into her car outside her home.

About a minute later, police received a second 911 call reporting a car crash less than a quarter-mile away from the knife attack, says Harran. Officers arrived to find Priestley dead on arrival after she drove away from the site of the attack with mortal stab wounds.

The stabbing set off a 12-hour manhunt for Table, who was arrested by Philadelphia police that evening after he allegedly stabbed a homeless man, says Harran.

According to Harran, Priestley had recently broken up with Table.

“It appears they were living together prior to this, but just recently he was thrown out of the apartment and she just had her locks changed yesterday,” Harran told reporters at a Monday press conference.

Harran tells PEOPLE Priestley was about to leave for work in the morning. Police believe Table had staked out her home with the goal of attacking her.

Priestley’s neighbor Mike Angley told TV station WPVI he heard Priestley crying for help during the attack.

“I heard a woman screaming ‘help me,’ ” Angley said. “After that, tires screeched.”

Table is charged by Bensalem police with criminal homicide, kidnapping and possession of an instrument of crime, according to online records.

According to Philadelphia police, there are no current charges against Table in Philadelphia.

Table is being held without bail in the Bucks County Correctional Facility. It was not immediately clear if he has retained an attorney.

Harran tells PEOPLE that Table “is an evil person. I won’t even call him a human being. To commit such a heinous crime, and to slaughter a woman on the way to work because she no longer wants to date you? I’m not sure that person can be considered a person.”

Murderous Religious Cult Leader Dispatched ‘Death Angels’ to Punish Those Who Crossed Him

During a secretive reign of terror and killing carried out by his followers across Miami in the 1980s, a charismatic cult leader appeared to revel in his ability to get away with it all.

“Are you some kind of fool?,” Yahweh Ben Yahweh, the founder and leader of the murderous Nation of Yahweh who called himself “the black God,” said malevolently during a moment of preaching. “You can’t kill God.”

To those who still tried to cross him, “he sent out the ‘death angels,’” former FBI agent Herb Cousins says in the next episode of People Magazine Investigates: Cults, which airs Monday on Investigation Discovery (9 p.m. ET), an exclusive clip of which is shown above.

The audio of Yahweh Ben Yahweh depicts the sinister edge that eventually overtook the religious group, which began by offering Biblical inspiration to young African Americans during a period of racial tension and won endorsements from local leaders for tangible steps to clean up drug-riddled and dilapidated properties around South Florida.

But the group devolved into a cult of personality with an increasingly strong-armed leader who ruled by intimidation — and then violence.

Yahweh Ben Yahweh — the former Hulon Mitchell Jr. — was charged in 1990 along with 15 of his followers with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, racketeering, arson and extortion. In 1992 he and six of those followers were found guilty, with the leader himself sentenced to 18 years for conspiracy to commit murder.

• For more on the Nation of Yahweh and its charismatic leader’s murderous reign, watch Monday’s People Magazine Investigates: Cults at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery.

The first killing in 1981 targeted a former sect member who challenged Yahweh Ben Yahweh’s teachings and left to form a splinter group with others. When the defector returned to seek out the leader at a warehouse remade by the group as its so-called Temple of Love, he was beaten by members of the leader’s security team, some of whom carried stainless steel machetes.

“I saw a hammer,” a witness to the beating, former follower Kahlil Amani, says in the excerpt above. “He’s just being pounded out on the floor. … I still could hear him breathing with that sound of death.”

Sometime later in the Everglades, “we find a head and body pieces,” former Assistant U.S. Attorney David DiMaio says on the episode. “They were sending a message with this killing.”

Other defectors, including a woman named Mildred Banks, went to police with their suspicions. She and her husband were then attacked in their home; her husband was killed, and she was left for dead but survived and entered witness protection under a new name.

“They’re going to cut his head off,” Banks recalled of the attackers, she says on the episode.

“She was in fear for her life,” PEOPLE Senior Editor Alicia Dennis says in the excerpted clip. “God was helping them kill their enemies.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

In another audio viewers will hear on the episode, Yahweh Ben Yahweh asserts of his power: “If you don’t love me … you’re a snake.”

Says Cousins, the former FBI agent who slapped the handcuffs on Yahweh Ben Yahweh upon his arrest: “To do what he did, and the way he did it, I personally believe that he was just plain evil.”

The People Magazine Investigates: Cults episode on the Nation of Yahweh airs Monday (9 p.m. ET) on Investigation Discovery.

‘Diabolical Torture Chamber’: 2 Ex-Officers Beat Pa. Woman to Death in Front of 10-Year-Old Child

Two former Temple University police officers were convicted of beating a woman to death in 2016 in a home prosecutors described as a “degrading, diabolical torture chamber,” according to multiple reports.

On Thursday, a Philadelphia judge found Aaron Wright and Marquis Robinson guilty of third-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated assault in a nonjury trial in the July 2016 death of Wright’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Joyce Quaweay, NBC Philadelphia reports.

Quaweay shared a home with Wright, Robinson, his girlfriend and multiple children in Germantown, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 24-year-old was stripped naked and forced to lie facedown on a weight bench in the kitchen as she was beaten for hours, according to the Inquirer.

During closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Chesley Lightsey held a baton and said, “They were taking this, and coming over their head, and beating and beating and beating Joyce,” the Inquirer reports.

Quaweay was killed in front of one of Robinson’s four children, according to NBC. The girl, who was 10 at the time, testified in court Tuesday that on the morning of Quaweay’s murder, she woke up to the sound of the 24-year-old screaming, according to the Inquirer.

The defendants’ attorneys argued that Quaweay died of heart failure, NBC reports.

Lightsey told the station, “She ultimately died of heart failure because her heart was working so hard through the panic that she just collapsed.”

Lightsey added, “All of this was done in front of a 10-year-old child who was home at the time.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Lightsey also said Quaweay and the female children living in the home were regularly beaten for “not following the rules,” the Inquirer reports.

Robinson was fired from Temple University after being arrested. Wright resigned in 2012 for an unknown reason, according to CBS.

PEOPLE’s phone messages for James Berardinelli, Wright’s attorney, and Gary Server, Robinson’s attorney, were not immediately returned, so it was not immediately clear if their clients plan to appeal.

The Cranberries Speak Out After Dolores O’Riordan’s Death: ‘We Are Devastated’

Following the news of The Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan’s sudden death at the age of 46, the remaining members of the band have spoken out about their grief.

We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores,” Fergal Lawler, Noel and Mike Hogan wrote in a joint statement on social media.

“She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today,” they added.

The Irish musician was in London at the time of her death for a recording session, her publicist confirmed in a statement to the BBC. “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” read the statement.

A cause of death has not been announced.

“Police in Westminster are dealing with a sudden death. Officers were called at 9:05 a.m. on Monday 15th January to a hotel in Park Lane. A woman in her mid-40s was pronounced dead at the scene. At this early stage the death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries continue,” Scotland Yard officials said in a statement to PEOPLE.

RELATEDDolores O’Riordan Assured Fans She Was ‘Feeling Good’ Three Weeks Before Sudden Death at Age 46

Just a little more than three weeks before her sudden death, O’Riordan assured her fans she was “feeling good” after canceling the band’s tour earlier in the year because of ongoing issues with her health.

“Hi All, Dolores here. Feeling good!” she wrote on the band’s Facebook account. “I did my first bit of gigging in months at the weekend, performed a few songs at the Billboard annual staff holiday party in New York with the house band. Really enjoyed it! Happy Christmas to all our fans!!”

Last July, the band thanked their fans for their “outpouring of support” after they were forced to cancel most of their European summer tour because of O’Riordan’s “recovery from her ongoing back problem.”

“Her doctors have now instructed her to cancel her upcoming almost sold out tour of North America with the band,” they added, saying her recovery “has not been going as well as expected.” The musicians had been scheduled to tour in the States from Sept. 11 through Oct. 6.

O’Riordan is survived by her three children, 20-year-old son Taylor, 16-year-old daughter Molly and 12-year-old daughter Dakota.

Fashion World Mourns Death of Azzedine Alaïa

PARIS — The fashion community poured out tributes on Saturday to Azzedine Alaïa, one of the most iconic couturiers of the modern era whose body-con designs defined Eighties fashion, following his death here at age 77.
The cause of death was heart failure.
The diminutive Tunisian-born designer was known for his structured, exacting tailoring and his refusal to bow to industry timetables and marketing pressures, preferring to work at his own pace.
He gained international fame in the Eighties because of the success of his evening dresses, snug knits and sculpted leathers, and he was nicknamed “The King of Cling” because his clothes fit like a second skin.

Former Pennsylvania Officer Pleads Guilty to Death of Pregnant Wife After Claiming He Shot Her by Accident

A former Pennsylvania State Police Trooper has pled guilty to the deaths of his wife and unborn child in 2014, which he claimed was accidental.

Joseph Paul Miller pled guilty on Thursday to two counts of involuntary manslaughter for causing the deaths of his wife, JoAnna Miller, and the baby girl she was pregnant with at the time, while he was cleaning his gun, according to the Associated Press.

Miller’s wife was taken to the hospital in critical condition while she was given an emergency cesarean section, according to the Montgomery Colonial. She was given an emergency cesarean, but the 24-week-old baby and the mother died after surgery.

Miller, 36, faces a maximum of 5 to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in the coming months, according to CBS Philadelphia.

Miller told investigators he had been taking apart a gun he owned in the family room to clean it when it discharged, according to the AP.

He initially said the gun was about 10 feet away from his wife when it accidentally went off, but he later revised that distance to about 2 feet away. Prosecutors, however, said ballistics and forensics tests showed the gun was only 3 to 6 inches from his wife’s head when it fired, and they charged him.

In a 911 call he said: “I, ah, was cleaning. I was about to clean my gun, and I didn’t realize there was a round … I shot my wife.” Miller’s children can also be heard in the background of the call, reports CBS Philadelphia.

Miller’s defense attorney Tim Woodward told the AP that Miller had resigned from the state police.

Miller remains out on bail and maintains custody of the couple’s two other children while he waits to be sentenced in Montgomery County.

Members of ‘Death Metal’ Band Decapitated Accused of Kidnapping Female Concertgoer After Show

Four members of a Polish “death metal” band have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a woman after an August concert in Spokane, Washington, PEOPLE confirms.

Michal M. Lysejko, 27, Waclaw J. Kieltyka, 35, Rafal T. Piotrowski, 31, and 30-year-old Hubert E. Wiecek, who are members of the band Decapitated, were taken into custody Saturday morning.

The alleged incident took place on September 1 just before 2 a.m. after the band performed at The Pin, Spokane Police Department Cpl. Teresa Fuller tells PEOPLE.

Fuller says the woman, who was a concertgoer, contacted the police.

Additional charges may be pending, Fuller says.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested the band members just after midnight September 9. The band had been performing at the Observatory in Santa Ana, California.

“Our personnel were asked to assist Spokane in arresting four suspects with warrants for kidnapping out of Spokane,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Juanita Navarro tells PEOPLE.

(It was not immediately clear why the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department was in Santa Ana, which is in Orange County.)

Navarro says the four Polish nationals are currently being held in Men’s Central Jail on no bail in downtown Los Angeles.

The band members are awaiting extradition back to Spokane, defense attorney Steve Graham tells PEOPLE.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the ShowLaw & Order is on sale now.

Graham told the Spokesman-Review that his clients are innocent. “There was another side to this,” he said. “We have witnesses that can testify to the fact that the accuser came to visit the band of her own free will and left on good terms,” he said.

Graham said the band members won’t fight extradition.

The band, which has 55,000 followers on Instagram, has been touring to promote its latest album, Anticult. “Death metal” is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal.

Sarah Silverman Remembers Her Mother on Anniversary of Death: ‘I Miss You Mom, You Are a Warrior’

Silverman posted a throwback photo of her mother, Beth Ann O’Hara, who died two years ago at the age of 73. Wearing a red shirt and denim overalls, O’Hara flashed a big smile for the beautiful photo — the same one Silverman shared when her mother died in 2015.

“She was raised in a time when girls were seen and not heard and went to college to find husbands instead of themselves. But she found her voice and she found her immeasurable strength and had great years after allowing herself her full potential. And then her body was the fight and she battled for decades before that took her too. I miss you mom. You are a warrior.”

O’Hara was also involved in showbiz — producing and directing 50 plays over the course of 25 years,  New Hampshire Public Radio reported.

In honor of her work, Silverman presented her mom with a lifetime achievement award at the New Hampshire Theater Awards in 2003, the New Hampshire Public Radio also reported.

Before presenting the award, the actress and comedian described her mother as “loving, nurturing” and “colorful.”

“Loving, nurturing, caring, colorful — she used to wear two different color socks, I’m not sure she was aware of that – supportive, honest, strong and with endless creativity and energy. She gives us the feeling that we fill her heart with love and I think it’s because we fill her heart with love. Mom … we feel the same. you fill our hearts, as well,” Silverman said of her mother during the award presentation.

When her mother passed away in 2015, Silverman wrote a beautiful tribute on Twitter.

“Wednesday morning my mom died,” Silverman wrote for the Twitter post. “She was a know-it-all in overalls & two different colored socks. And defiantly, no bra.”

“The woman who, when I was little, gave me detailed directions to a restaurant ladies room then secretly watched as I found my way to it on my own,” she continued. “The woman who went back to college at 42, and skinny dipped in ponds, and told me never to protect myself from a broken heart because it was so very worth the pain to get to experience love.”

Viola Davis and True Blood Stars Attend Actor Nelsan Ellis’ Funeral After His Shocking Death

Nelsan Ellis — the actor known for his role of Lafayette on True Blood who died at the age of 39 — was laid to rest on Saturday at the Holy Temple Cathedral in his home state of Illinois.

Several of Ellis’ costars, including his  True Blood castmates, attended his funeral, according to E! News.

Stars from True Blood included Anna Paquin, who played Sookie; Carrie Preston, who played Arlene, and Rutina Wesley, who played Tara, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Wesley was a longtime friend of Ellis and penned an emotional tribute to him which she shared last week.

Viola Davis, who starred with Ellis in the films The Help and Get on Up also attended the funeral.

There was also a public viewing for Ellis on Friday at the Leak and Sons Funeral Home, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ellis, who had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years, died from heart complications on July 8 after he reportedly attempted to withdraw from alcohol on his own.

In a statement released on July 10 by Ellis’ manager Emily Gerson Saines to The Hollywood Reporter, Saines said that Ellis’ father had explained that the actor started going into heart failure after he attempted to withdraw from alcohol. Ellis also had many “stints in rehab” before trying to withdraw without any assistance.

Ellis is survived by his son, Breon, as well as his grandmother, Alex Brown, and his father, Tommie Lee Thompson. He is also survived by his siblings Lakeeia Thomson, Tommie Lee Thompson, Babon Ellis, Maurice Turne, Tianna Thompson, Shaentika Beard and Yvonne Ellis and aunt Tartheaia Thompson.

Memorial donations may be made to the Nelsan Ellis Foundation. Flowers and gifts may be sent to Leak & Sons Funeral Home.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Defends Festival Set Following Acrobat’s Death: ‘We Are Not Heartless People’

Following criticism of Green Day for carrying on with their show at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid on Saturday after an acrobatic performer died, singer Billie Joe Armstrong said the band did not know of the tragedy until after their set.

Pedro Aunion Monroy, 42, was performing an aerial stunt inside a cube being suspended by a crane when he fell 100 ft. in front of thousands of people. He died from his injuries, according to the BBC.

“Many of you are wondering why we continued to play our show after the accident,” Armstrong explained in a statement obtained by PEOPLE and posted on Green Day’s website. “Green Day did not hear about the accident until after our show was over. We didn’t even know there was an acrobat performance at all.”

He continued, “These festivals are huge. There are so many things happening at the same time it’s impossible to keep up with every performer/artist.”

Armstrong said that the band was warming up at the artist compound about half a mile away from the festival stage before the show.

He shared that they were delayed about 15 minutes from going on due to what they were told was a security problem.

“Security issues are a normal occurrence and procedure at any show. We were NOT told why which is also normal. We waited as we were instructed,” Armstrong said. “Still, we had no clue there was any such accident.”

The rocker said everything seemed “normal” during the show and the fans were having a good time.

“We got off stage and drove back to our artist compound. It was there when we were told the shocking news about Pedro,” he said. “All of us were in disbelief. I don’t know why the authorities chose not to tell us about the accident before our concert. All we know is what was said after our concert.”

He continued, “This has never happened in the 30 years Green Day have been performing live. If we had known prior to our performance we most likely would not have played at all. We are not heartless people. The safety and well being at any of our concerts absolutely comes first. What happened to Pedro is unthinkable. Once again we are heartbroken for his friends and family.”

Jim Carrey to Give Sworn Deposition in Wrongful Death Case Over Ex’s Suicide

Jim Carrey will answer questions about his late girlfriend Cathriona White’s suicide in a sworn deposition next month.

The actor is being sued for wrongful death by White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, and her mother, Brigid Sweetman. The two complaints were consolidated into a single case on Thursday, with both claiming that Carrey obtained the drugs that killed White under the false name “Arthur King” and provided them to her, despite knowing she was prone to depression and had previously attempted suicide. Furthermore, they allege that Carrey gave White “three STDs without warning her.”

Michael Avenatti, Sweetman and Burton’s attorney, tells PEOPLE that he has been demanding Carrey’s deposition for months, adding, “He will now be forced to answer questions about how he gave Ms. White three STDs, humiliated and demeaned her, and then gave her the drugs she used to kill herself. We are counting the days until the truth is known.”

Ray Boucher, Carrey’s attorney, tells PEOPLE, “The truth has been known for sometime. A troubled woman took her life and Jim Carrey had nothing to do with it. He’s looking forward to his deposition being taken because the truth ultimately will prevail, and there’s nothing in his deposition that is going to change the truth.”

Both parties will also enter into mediation, although Boucher does not believe the case will be settled before trial. He expects Carrey will be deposed in late August.

Carrey has previously spoken out about the pending lawsuit, calling it a “shakedown.”

“What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world,” Carrey, 55, said in a statement.

Fisher took cocaine before her death

Carrie Fisher had cocaine and other drugs in her system when she fell ill on a plane last year, a post mortem has found.

Carrie Fisher’s Death Should Be A Wakeup Call To People With Sleep Apnea

Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea among other health issues, according to a recent statement from the Los Angeles coroner’s office. The “Star Wars” actress also had traces of several drugs, including cocaine, in her system.

Though her drug use has grabbed headlines, the coroner’s report is focused on the role of the common sleep disorder, which affects more than 18 million Americans.

Obstructive sleep apnea, the clinical term, is a health condition that causes breathing to be interrupted during sleep and can disrupt rest throughout the night. The most common sign of the condition is chronic snoring.

Sleep apnea is serious: It raises the risk of dying early by 46 percent, according to a 2009 study. Sleep apnea also increases the chances of sudden cardiac death, a condition that kills approximately 450,000 Americans every year.

Primary care doctors typically don’t inquire about sleep apnea during regular checkups, according to Dr. Douglas Kirsch, medical director at the Carolinas HealthCare Sleep Medicine and president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. But it’s certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored.

“While it’s generally considered a chronic medical condition that people have for many years, there are some night-to-night risks for a major medical problem,” Kirsch told HuffPost.

How sleep apnea can hurt your heart

The condition on its own can lead to severe health complications. Sleep apnea can cause hypertension, heart conditions and mental health issues like depression. It’s undetermined whether or not Fisher, who died late last year at the age of 60, was getting medical help for the issue.

The disorder occurs when a person’s airway becomes obstructed. This could happen for a number of reasons, including structural issues like oversized tonsils or an issue where the tongue and throat muscles relax and block the windpipe. Being overweight can also increase a person’s risk for developing the disorder.

A blocked airway is essentially what leads to the disrupted breathing that occurs with the condition. When breathing is delayed, it causes oxygen levels in the blood to decrease. This drop essentially puts pressure on the cardiovascular system, which makes the heart work harder in order to keep everything in check.

This process is what ultimately contributes to a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart issues for people with sleep apnea, according to the American Sleep Association. The condition can also lead to irregular heartbeats.

If left untreated, sleep apnea puts a person at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

The deadly relationship between drug use and sleep disorders

It’s important to note that the coroner listed the cause of her death as “undetermined” and there’s no proven link between the drug use and sleep apnea in the case of Fisher’s death. But experts say substances like alcohol and medications can make the condition worse.

Research has also found that sleep disturbances and addiction may be linked. Those with substance use disorders may be more likely to develop sleep disorders, according to a small 2009 study. Separate research has found a link between chronic opioid use and sleep apnea, indicating the use of those substances may induce disordered breathing while asleep.

What to do if you suspect you have the condition

Because the common symptom of sleep apnea ― snoring ― can also be a harmless sleep problem, many people don’t often think to get checked for the issue. Aside from snoring, Kirsch recommends looking out for daytime sleepiness or waking up in the middle of the night as indicators that you might have the condition. Morning headaches can also be a sign.

Fortunately, there are ways to fix sleep apnea. Some doctors may recommend doing a sleep study, where physicians will examine factors like your heart rate, airflow and blood oxygen levels while you rest to determine whether or not the condition is present. Medical professionals may also determine if you need a continuous positive airway pressure device (more commonly known as a CPAP), which is a mask that helps keep the airway open during sleep.

Some other methods in managing sleep apnea include possible dental procedures or a surgical procedure to fix the issue that may be causing a blocked airway. Lifestyle changes like weight management through diet and exercise and cutting back on alcohol can also help control the disorder’s severity.

“Patients will delay testing because they are worried about the treatment options for [sleep apnea],” Kirsch said. “That’s like not getting your blood pressure checked because you are worried about treating high blood pressure, it doesn’t make sense … I have many, many patients, who after starting treatment, bemoan the fact that they had delayed for so long because they feel so much better. “

As with all medical issues, the best course of action is to start by talking to your doctor.

“If you have a concern about your sleep, speak to your primary care physician about it, and if they are unable to help, seek help from a board-certified sleep physician,” Kirsch stressed.

After His Wife’s Death, Man Still Uses The Last Coffee Can She Bought

When his wife of 41 years died of skin cancer in 2012, David Hoskins packed up and moved in with his daughter to nearby Hazard, Kentucky.

Hoskins didn’t take much with him, but he kept two things: the last can of coffee his wife Karen bought before she got sick and the spoon she used to stir her coffee every morning.

Five years later, the 66-year-old widow still uses both every day.

“Looking at that picture of him with his coffee can, you’d never know that that’s all he has left of her,” his daughter Kim Hoskins Fields wrote in a now-viral Facebook post shared on the page Love What Matters on Saturday. “Because that’s how they always started their day was with coffee, and so each day he starts his day with my mama.”

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Hoskins Fields said the spoon and the Maxwell House coffee canister ― which her dad refills when it starts to get low ― are sacred items in her home.

“When he moved in his things, he told me to never throw the can away and to never touch the spoon inside of it,” she said. “He didn’t want it mixed up with my other spoons.”

“I kind of laughed and asked him why,” Hoskins Fields said. “He explained that it was all he kept because it made him feel close to her, like she was still there each morning.”

The couple had six kids during their marriage (two from Hoskin’s previous marriage), so couple-time was often in short supply. Every morning, though, they made time for coffee.

“Even when I was little and she went to work super early he would get up with her and have a cup,” their daughter said.

Karen’s diagnosis of melanoma in October 2012 came out of nowhere and he grappled with the news, according to his daughter. Two months later, Karen died.

“When she was dying, he made himself sick with worry and tried to save her,” Hoskins Fields said. “He begged and pleaded with God. He would have traded anything, gave anything or done anything to save her.”

These days, coffee is all Hoskins needs to remember his late wife.

“He says he has all the pictures and memories he wants in his mind,” she said. “He kept what he knew would make him feel the closest to her.”

‘I Am Heath Ledger’ Focuses On The Actor’s Life, Not His Death

Heath was the most alive human and if it wasn’t on the edge, it didn’t interest him. If there wasn’t some type of risk involved, he had no time for it. He went all the way out with the time that he had. He went all the way to the edge.

That quote by musician Ben Harper opens “I Am Heath Ledger,” the new documentary premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival April 23 and airing on Spike TV next month.

Harper joins Heath Ledger’s closest friends and family members in the heartwarming project, directed by Adrian Buitenhuis and Derik Murray. The film compiles interviews with the likes of Ledger’s parents and colleagues, including Naomi Watts, Ang Lee, Matt Amato and Djimon Hounsou, among the actor’s own photos and footage, which he shot throughout his 28 years. In a way, Ledger himself is a director of his own documentary.

“There were always cameras around,” Ledger’s former girlfriend and model Christina Cauchi says in the film. “I mean, he was documenting everything and he was just surrounded by all of those moments he was in, but then he’d be capturing the next moment and the next moment and the next moment. It didn’t stop, it never stopped.”

“It wasn’t just to film us or film what we were doing, he was creating something, straightaway,” Ledger’s best friend Trevor DiCarlo explains.

Ledger’s death in January 2008 took the world by storm, considering his illustrious career and reputation in Hollywood. At the time of his passing, Ledger was shooting “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and was set to debut his unforgettable work as The Joker in “The Dark Knight,” which went on to win him a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

But Ledger was so much more than just an actor, as the film comes to show.

He was a son. He was a director. He was a brother. He was a chess player. He was a friend. He was a photographer. He was a father. He was a music lover. And most importantly, he was an influencer.

“Some people are just bigger than the world has room for,” Harper says of Ledger, with Lee later adding, “He was a person so talented, even God envied him.”

Below, eight things we learned while watching “I Am Heath Ledger.”

Mel Gibson was his first teacher.

When Ledger booked the role of Gabriel Martin, Mel Gibson’s son, in “The Patriot,” it was a dream come true for the Australian actor.

“It was a huge production. It was a little terrifying,” DiCarlo says of the 2000 movie. “You can tell he wanted to do a good job, he was still learning.”

Ledger’s agent, Steve Alexander, admits that he had a slight “crisis of confidence” and was struggling on set, but soon took note of the lessons he was learning from Gibson.

“He’s standing across from his idol,” Alexander says. “Acting with Mel Gibson for a young Aussie kid was a lot. [But] Mel was great and really generous with him and took him under his wing and was amazing.”

“Mel really taught him how to come in and out of a character,” DiCarlo adds.

Fame scared him.

Although Ledger always knew he wanted to be an actor, once “A Knight’s Tale” really put him on the map, he became a bit overwhelmed by all the attention.

He was “mortified, and he felt owned,” his friend and director Matt Amato says.

“He kind of almost pulled out of every movie he ended up doing [over fear he’d fail],” Alexander admits, adding that Ledger followed through with his career because he enjoyed the art of the craft.

He housed a lot of Australian actors when they came to Los Angeles.

Ledger apparently was everybody’s buddy, putting up dozens of Australian actors at the start of their careers, including Martin Henderson, Rose Byrne and Joel Edgerton.

“The Australian thing, to me, was, ‘Yeah, come one, come all!’” Naomi Watts, who dated Ledger from 2002 to 2004, jokes in the film.

“You’ve flown around the world. Staying in LA somewhere for a couple of months? That cost a lot, and I had nothing going on work-wise. Nothing,” actor Ben Mendelsohn, who stayed at Ledger’s place, explains.

Ledger would apparently throw parties and DJ on the turntables all night.

“People would stay a long time, sometimes a bit longer than necessary,” Watts says. “With him, it was just [having] friends to hang out with and share the journey. He was very big on sharing his success.”

He might’ve, sort of, inspired “Entourage.”

At one of these house parties, Mendelsohn spotted “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier, and swears he was doing research for the HBO show by getting a glimpse into Ledger’s posse.

“Heath’s place in LA was a renowned sort of pre-’Entourage’ entourage house,” Mendelsohn says, explaining the time Grenier showed up at the house. “I often fancy that he was doing a bit of research on a functioning entourage, because Heath wasn’t there so ‘Vinny,’ as it were, would have been away making a film.”

He almost played Spider-Man.

After “Monster’s Ball,” people viewed Ledger in a different way, as more of a “dramatic actor,” Alexander said.

“When I read ‘Spiderman,’ I talked to him about it and it was almost immediate that he said, ‘That makes no sense for me. I can’t possibly be Peter Parker,’” Alexander explains. “He was looking, always, for something that was going to be truly challenging … ways that he could disappear into a character and be almost recognizable.”

The role obviously went to Toby Maguire.

He was an impressive chess player.

Ledger played chess “every day,” according to Amato, who says they would often face-off in matches or play online if they weren’t together.

“I always felt that he was five moves in front of me,” Ledger’s dad, Kim, says of his son’s chess skills. “By the time he was 10 or 11 or so, it was pretty hard to actually beat him. Heath was trying to achieve a grand master status, and was only a few points away from achieving his goal.”

Ledger, who directed a few music videos, was set to make his feature-length directorial debut on “The Queen’s Gambit,” about a young chess player addicted to drugs. The film was reportedly going to star Ellen Page, and was scheduled to begin shooting in late 2008.

“He understood that story inside and out … he had something to say. He had the ability to communicate his ideas, he could translate into film,” cinematographer Ed Lachman says in the doc.

Bon Iver wrote a song based on Heath’s life.

When he found out Ledger died, Amato was shooting Bon Iver’s music video “The Wolves (Act I & II).”

“I just held him for the longest time,” Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon says. “This person that I had just met just lost somebody so important to them ― it was no longer about making a Bon Iver music video anymore. This was now our chance to be there with Matt as he grieved. It was a three-day wake.”

After the experience, Vernon began writing down lyrics “on some of these visions Matt would kind of tell me about Heath growing up in Australia.”

“The words ended up being the first song on [my self-titled album], and I called it ‘Perth.’”

The mostly instrumental song features the lyrics, “Still alive for you, love.”

There are misconceptions about his death.

The film discusses Ledger’s sleeping problems at length. Almost everyone interviewed admits that he had a hard time resting his mind, soaking up every second of each day. His email was even “illberunningaround@[insert].com.”

At the time of his death, Ledger was having trouble sleeping and was sick with pneumonia. The prescribed medications mixed with sleeping pills are what caused his accidental overdose.

“It’s still hard when people talk about it and people have preconceived ideas surrounding that period of time. But that’s what people do. They come up with their version of it that makes it convenient,” Alexander says. “The truth is, he was super happy and loving life and he struggled with some demons but he wasn’t wanting to go anywhere but forward.”

“I guess we’re no different from anyone else who loses a child or loses somebody suddenly. The only difference being we had to live our feelings out in the public eye,” his mom, Sally, says, with sister Kate adding, “The world did find out before we did. It will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Alexis Arquette’s Sister Patricia Celebrates the Transgender Pioneer’s Legacy 6 Months After Death: ‘I Wouldn’t Change a Thing’

Alexis Arquette was undoubtedly one of the first transgender activists in Hollywood.

Coming from a family of actors, Alexis was accepted when she came out. Her sister Patricia was concerned about the impact her sister’s revelation would have on her career — though Alexis was not.

“Alexis was really also very powerful, and strong, and really brave, very brave,” Patricia told PEOPLE while at the Let’s Toast the Extraordinary Achievements of Alexis Arquette pre-GLAAD Media Awards dinner sponsored by Ketel One in Hollywood.

“We had a long conversation when Alexis told me that she was transgender, and I said, ‘Okay. So what do you do about Hollywood? How will you get work? People are not progressive in Hollywood and it could really negatively impact your career. Are you thinking everything through?’ ” the Academy Award Winner recalled.

Patricia affirms that despite the obvious risks, Alexis was confident in her decision to come out in Hollywood.

“Alexis was very brave to make that decision,” her sister continued. “She really wanted to help progress the world and move the world forward.”

Alexis died last September at age 47, but childhood memories of Alexis are still vivid for Patricia.

“Alexis and David both had these beds that sort of look like space pods. They were like these tubes that you could get in,” the 48-year-old recalled. “My mom was making Alexis’ bed and realized that a big chunk of the mattress was missing out of the corner. She said, ‘Alexis what happened to your mattress?’ Alexis said, ‘I need the foam to make a puppet.’ So she pulled out this puppet with this little sparkly dress on it and my mom said, ‘Oh, my god, it’s gorgeous. My kids are so creative.’ “

Patricia was joined at the event by brothers David and Richmond along with her boyfriend Eric White. Not only were they there to remember their sister, but also to honor the many lives that she touched.

“We’ve gotten so many letters. I’ve had letters from people all over the world who said their first experience of a trans person was with Alexis,” Patricia shared in awe of her late sister.  “Watching Alexis in Last Exit to Brooklyn — which was Alexis’ first movie — she played a trans person in the 1950s which was considered really a crossdresser at that time. That’s what people called trans people then.”

Patricia also noted ,”Alexis was incredibly creative our whole lives. I grew up with Alexis putting on makeup, trying on high heels …. Alexis was my best friend when we grew up, so I wouldn’t change one thing about Alexis.”

Emmett Till’s Accuser Recants Part of Her Story — 60 Years After His Beating Death Stoked Civil Rights Movement

The woman at the center of the Emmett Till murder case has spoken out for the first time, more than 60 years later, admitting that part of her story about the black teenager is false, a new book claims.

Till’s brutal beating death in Mississippi in 1955, the acquittal of his professed killers by an all-white jury and the photos of his dead body sparked outrage outside the state — becoming a catalyst for the national civil rights movement.

Authorities say the 14-year-old from Chicago was killed during a visit to Mississippi after Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white woman then named Carolyn Bryant, reportedly accused him of grabbing her by the hand and waist and acting lewdly at her shop.

Till was kidnapped days later from a relative’s home and then beaten and mutilated, before being shot, by Donham’s shop-owner husband at the time, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam.

Till’s body was sunk in the Tallahatchie River, where it was eventually found floating.

After a highly publicized trial, Bryant and Milam were acquitted of Till’s kidnapping and murder in September 1955 by an all-white, all-male jury. They deliberated for an hour.

Donham testified at the trial and, according to Vanity Fair, her allegations were entered into the record and shared with reporters by her attorneys — but they were not heard by the jury, who had been excused from the courtroom.

In January 1956, Bryant and Milam confessed to their guilt in Till’s death in a Look magazine article. (Both men have since died.)

Donham avoided public attention for much of her life, ignoring journalists’ repeated requests. But she sat down with author and Duke University scholar Timothy B. Tyson 10 years ago for his new book, The Blood of Emmett Till, according to Vanity Fair and the Austin American-Statesman.

Donham’s 2007 interview with, when she was 72, is being published for the first time. Of her accusation that Till had physically and verbally harassed her, she told Tyson, according to Vanity Fair: “That part’s not true.”

“Honestly, I just don’t remember,” Donham said of her fateful meeting with Till, according to the Statesman. “It was 50 years ago. You tell these stories for so long that they seem true.” Donham’s allegation that Till whistled at her has also been disputed.

On the stand in 1955, however, Donham claimed Till had said something “unprintable” to her and she was “scared to death,” according to Vanity Fair.

Tyson said Donham, now 82, wrote her own memoir, More Than a Wolf Whistle, which is kept at the University of North Carolina but will not be available until the 2030s, at Donham’s request, according to Vanity Fair and the Statesman. (University officials could not immediately confirm the memoir’s existence.)

During their meeting, Tyson said Donham told him, “Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him.” She also expressed feeling “tender sorrow” for Till’s mother, Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley.

Messages left with Donham and her relatives for comment on Tyson’s book were not returned Friday.

All Signs Point To Another Heartbreaking ‘Walking Dead’ Death

It looks like we’re saying “peace” to another “Walking Dead” character.

With an “all-out war” supposedly on the way, you know at least one other main character on the show is probably going down, and it looks like we now know who it will be.

Yeah, it’s about time to say goodbye to Sasha.

Sonequa Martin-Green is set to star on the new series “Star Trek: Discovery,” and while that is great for the actress, it’s not so good for her “Walking Dead” character.

Even more heart-wrenching, we’re just getting over the fact that Abraham gave Sasha a peace sign before his death in the season premiere. Now you’re gonna lay this shiz on us?

When asked about the impact of the new job on her “Walking Dead” role, Martin-Green told Entertainment Weekly she “can’t say anything.”

The actress said, “I can say that the story is as impactful and powerful and dynamic as it always has been, and there’s nothing to worry about where that’s concerned.”

Showrunner Scott Gimple was optimistic, telling EW that Martin-Green can “do anything.”

We don’t doubt that. We just think she’ll “do anything” while going where no woman has gone before on “Star Trek.”

In addition to the vague comments from Martin-Green, dedicated spoiler group The Spoiling Dead Fans have already spread rumors that Sasha will die in the second half of Season 7.

The reports also say that Michael Cudlitz, aka Abraham, may be making an appearance in the finale, so get your tissues ready.

Peace out.

5 Things I Learned About My Husband Since His Death 3 Weeks Ago

My life partner of decades passed away three weeks ago. And what I’ve discovered in those difficult weeks is how much I didn’t know about the man I spent the bulk of my adult life with. No, I haven’t discovered that he kept a second family in Ohio or anything along that magnitude. But what I did discover surprised me.

1) He intentionally made turning on a TV in our house harder than it needs to be.

For real. My husband Vic was the master of the remotes. The black one for on/off. Gray one for volume. Blackish-gray one for channel changing. Or at least that’s what I think they do. Throw in a few remotes that used to control a DVR and the little basket that houses them overflows.

Only he knew which remote did what. In a million years of marriage, he never thought it necessary to label them. Nor did I. But it wasn’t until he died that I figured out why: He liked that I needed him ― and I liked it too. When I wanted to watch something on TV, I would have to call him into the room and ask for his help. He’d come in, do it and give me a peck on the cheek or a gentle bop on the head with the remote. It always made me smile.

Being needed ― and appreciated ― is one of the things that keeps a marriage alive. And since my husband’s death, I have learned that we have a universal remote that does it all.

2) His corniness was sweetness just wrapped in different packaging.

Traditionally on the night before my birthday, Vic would wait for me to go to sleep and then scurry around the house stashing little happy birthday notes in strange places for me to discover the next day. He would stick them in my shoes, inside the coffee pot, and even inside the plastic bin we use to store the dogs’ food (that one was signed by the dogs.) One year, he taped a note inside my English Muffin that luckily I spotted before it went into the toaster.

Some years, he concocted an elaborate Note Hunt, using riddles as hints to lead me to the next note. He knew my morning routine precisely and taped the first note to the toilet paper.

Vic never gave me a birthday gift per se ― and I was fine with that. The thought and effort he put into the annual notes was gift enough.

Marriage is a commitment to not just another person, but also to the idea of hanging in there through thick and thin, good and bad. My husband was a big goofy guy, an imperfect teddy bear with an occasional growl.  I got scrawled notes for my birthday instead of little blue Tiffany boxes and I cherish every one of them.

3) He was a better dad than I ever knew.

Sure he went to every practice and game for every team sport either of our kids ever played. And yes, he always drove half the team home, stopping for pizzas or In-N-Out burgers or both. And of course he always carried in his trunk spare shin guards and soccer socks in multiple colors with him ― just in case. When a violin was forgotten at home, he drove it to the music class and kept his promise to “not tell Mommy.” When there was a big test coming up, he was the parent who always stayed up till midnight the night before to quiz the kids.

But he did something else. To the very end, he was blind to their flaws. He loved us all too much to ever see anything wrong. In his eyes, our children were never at fault and I was the wife he was meant to marry. With love as unconditional as his, our kids are strong and solid people. They have experienced losing their Dad to a terrible illness and have emerged as kind, compassionate human beings. Our daughter is changing her college major to nursing.

4) His disorganization had an upside.

Not a hoarder, exactly, but Vic was definitely a pack-rat. And thank God for that. As a result of his inability to throw anything away, I am now basking in the warmth of memories spurred by what I have found in his clothing pockets. Yesterday I came upon a hotel card from a London trip we took at least 10 years ago. I also found our ticket stubs from visiting the Space Needle in Seattle, mixed in with a few old grocery store receipts and long-expired coupons for Subway. In a box in our foyer closet,  I found a car key that went missing last April and the program for our daughter’s 8th grade graduation. She is now a college freshman.

Amid the chaos of our daily lives, I would reach the clutter breaking point and stealthily toss things out when I thought he wasn’t looking. Now, each item I find feels like a cherished gem. I do wonder though why those loose almonds I found in pants he hasn’t worn in years never got moldy.

5) His car trunk could be declared a hazmat site.

My husband’s beat-up old SUV was his man cave. He used it to take the dogs to a muddy park or sandy beach every day. It was also used to transport soccer players with stinky socks and as a storage bin for half-eaten school lunches with the occasional forgotten bag of oranges rolling around until they fully rotted. His trunk was where things went to die.

How did I not know this about his car trunk? Easy. I chose not to look.

Choosing not to look may be a new widow’s best survival mechanism. When you don’t look, you can’t see what’s missing. But since today is my birthday and I had no notes to find, my heart most certainly knows what’s missing, and that it’s him.

David Bowie Didn’t Know Cancer Was Terminal Until Three Months Before Death

Days before the one-year anniversary of David Bowie’s death, a new documentary is shedding light on the singer’s final years before he lost an 18-month battle to liver cancer.

Directed by Francis Whately, “David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” airing on BBC Two Saturday, follows the rock icon on his 2003 A Reality Tour, as well as throughout the production of his last studio album, “Blackstar.”

According to Johan Renck, the director for the music video of the album’s final single, “Lazarus,” the 69-year-old rock icon discovered his cancer was terminal only three months before his death, while he was still working on the video.

According to the BBC, Renck explains in the documentary that he wasn’t made aware of Bowie’s diagnosis until after filming the video for “Lazarus,” which heavily features death and rebirth symbolism.

“I found out later that the week we were shooting is when he found out that it is over,” Renck said.

Despite the imagery that suggests Bowie was contemplating his own mortality through his music ― the video begins with the singer in a hospital bed with gauze covering his eyes ― the director denies that the music video had anything to do with his illness. The Guardian reports that Renck created the vision for “Lazarus” a week before learning of Bowie’s diagnosis.

“David said: ‘I just want to make it a simple performance video,’” Renck recalled. “I immediately said, ‘The song is called Lazarus, you should be in the bed.’ … To me it had to do with the biblical aspect of it … it had nothing to do with him being ill.”

Bowie kept his illness a secret from almost everyone around him in an effort to protect his family and continue work on his final album. According to the Guardian, the singer was making a sequel to “Lazarus” just weeks before his death.

“I don’t find it strange he kept his illness so private,” the documentary’s director, Francis Whately, told the Guardian. “He’d had his life picked over for 40 years and he thought he had said everything he wanted to say, there was nothing more.”

Hi, Death? I’d Like To Speak To Your Manager, Please

No, I don’t mind waiting.

Hello, sorry to have to do this, but I’ve recently had trouble with one of your employees. I think his name is Derek? Or maybe Darth?

Yes, Death, that’s it. Well, I can tell by your grim expression that perhaps you’ve had trouble with this one before.

I’ve been a customer here for over 30 years now, and I have to say I don’t remember the last time I was so disappointed with the service. I would say over the last year the quality has taken quite a dive.

Have you guys changed owners? Listen, shit happens, I get it. You can’t expect the service to always be perfect. But 2016 was awful.

I heard Barry is leaving! Awww, we love Barry. So smart, so courteous. He’s been a great leader around here.

Is it because of Don, that jackass you put in charge in November? Sorry for being frank, but he says the most insulting things, especially to women, and he attracts a lot of unsavory characters wherever he goes.

But anyway, I just really hope Death’s not around forever. Is that why you’ve been losing so many people?

Seems like every week there’s another person gone, and Facebook explodes with goodbye posts … Oh, I follow you guys on Facebook.

I’ve spoken to other customers who expressed similar concerns. Maybe it’s the nostalgia element, but we miss the way this place used to be. We miss the people who used to be here.

And hey, maybe they’ve gone to a better place, but I think 2017 could still be a great year for everyone here, too.

Anyway, sorry to be that customer. I just felt the need to say something. Thanks for listening.

Psst, and maybe think about getting rid of that jackass you put in charge!

Ship of Death

Ship of Death

It is no exaggeration to say that the Hankey, a small British ship that circled the Atlantic in 1792 and 1793, transformed the history of the Atlantic world. This extraordinary book uncovers the long-forgotten story of the Hankey, from its altruistic beginnings to its disastrous end, and describes the ship’s fateful impact upon people from West Africa to Philadelphia, Haiti to London. Billy G. Smith chased the story of the Hankey from archive to archive across several continents, and he now brings back to light a saga that continues to haunt the modern world. It began with a group of high-minded British colonists who planned to establish a colony free of slavery in West Africa. With the colony failing, the ship set sail for the Caribbean and then North America, carrying, as it turned out, mosquitoes infected with yellow fever. The resulting pandemic as the Hankey traveled from one port to the next was catastrophic. In the United States, tens of thousands died in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Charleston. The few survivors on the Hankey eventually limped back to London, hopes dashed and numbers decimated. Smith links the voyage and its deadly cargo to some of the most significant events of the era-the success of the Haitian slave revolution, Napoleon’s decision to sell the Louisiana Territory, a change in the geopolitical situation of the new United States-and spins a riveting tale of unintended consequences and the legacy of slavery that will not die.

Hidden Figures Stars Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons and Glen Powell Open Up About Death of John Glenn

For the stars of Hidden Figures, the death of hero astronaut John Glenn makes the film all the more meaningful.

“He was a brother, he was an uncle, he was a father,” Kevin Costner, who plays NASA manager Al Harrison in the movie, told PEOPLE of Glenn on Saturday at a special screening of Hidden Figures in New York City.

“Then there’s the idea of how a man lived his life and I realized, that man, he lived his life. As a soldier, as an astronaut, as a senator. He was not only in control of the planes he flew. He was in control of his life.”

Glenn died on Thursday, surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, according to a hospital statement.

Glen Powell portrays the astronaut-turned-U.S. senator in the film about three African-American women who provided NASA with the key mathematical data used to get Glenn to space in the program’s first successful space mission.

He told PEOPLE that playing Glenn caused him to see the famed astronaut in a new light.

“I think the more you fall in love with him, the more you start to look at him like a grandfather that you’re really proud of,” he said at the screening.

“It really does feel like a loss. But at the end of the day, in 95 years, there’s not anybody I think has accomplished more in that amount of time,” Powell said.

He added: “ affected so many people, inspired so many millions. It’s a loss. But at the same time, what a celebration of life.”

Jim Parsons, who plays Paul Stafford, said receiving the news of Glenn’s death while promoting such a movie was a “slap in the face.”

“I would’ve been saddened and surprised no matter when the news came out,” Parsons told PEOPLE at the event. “But it’s a little ironic for him to pass away just within days of us doing all this stuff for this movie that’s introducing three new faces of the space movement that we’ve never known of before.”

He continued: “The beauty of it is that man, John Glenn, that man who just passed away, has, for our lifetime, been such the face — or at least a face — of NASA and the space movement. He was such an integral part of bringing someone like Katherine Johnson into the room.”

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by author Margot Lee Shetterly. The screenplay was co-written by Allison Schroeder and director Theodore Melfi.

Hidden Figures hits theaters Dec. 25.

Death Stranding Will Run on the Horizon Zero Dawn Engine

Death Stranding, the debut game of Hideo Kojima’s new development studio Kojima Productions, will be powered by the Decima engine, developed by Horizon Zero Dawn studio Guerrilla Games. The news was announced earlier today at PlayStation Experience, during an interview between Kojima and Geoff Keighley.

PlayStation 4 systems architect Mark Cerny took the stage with Guerrilla Games director Hermen Hulst to explain more about the technicalities of the engine.

“The Decima engine is not just about rendering,” according to Hulst, citing its handling of AI, physics, logic, and the “entire world creation suite.” Kojima also added that the Decima engine is “very appropriate for work on open worlds,” which lines up with Kojima’s previous discussion of his upcoming title as an open-world game.

Nick Gordon Found Liable for Bobbi Kristina’s Death, Ordered to Pay $36 Million to Her Estate

Nick Gordon has been found liable in the wrongful death case of his former girlfriend, Bobbi Kristina Brown. As part of the settlement, a judge has ordered him to pay $ 36 million to Brown’s estate.

According to a video obtained by TMZ, Brown’s father, former New Edition boy bander Bobby Brown, told the court that she had planned to go into entertainment—following in not only his footsteps, but those of her mother, Whitney Houston. Due to her talent and famous parentage, Brown believed his daughter to have extremely high show-business prospects.

“She was an entertainer. If you were around her, all you would do was laugh. She told a lot of jokes. She was always the life of the party…and anywhere she went,” Brown said Thursday on the stand. “I know she had the talent to be successful.”

He went on to state his belief that Gordon was responsible for Bobbi Kristina’s death.

Judge T. Jackson Bedford, Jr. agreed, and awarded Bobbi Kristina’s estate $ 36 million. The financial breakdown  comprised of:

— $ 1,575,041 for conversion (theft of Brown’s funds), with the maximum charge of$ 250,000 for punitive damages

—$ 1,370,877.52 for assault and battery medical damages

—$ 13 million for pain and suffering, with an additional $ 4,200,000 because Gordon was found to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs

—$ 15,056,000 million for loss of life, factoring in future earning potential

Gordon has yet to comment on the rulling, but one of his reletives tells PEOPLE that he’s understandably distraught. “Nick isn’t in a good place right now. He doesn’t have any money. This is symbolic more than anything, because they’re not going to get anything from him. You can’t get blood from a stone.”

They go on to say that he will likely file for bankruptcy. “That will probably be his next step, but I don’t think he’s thinking straight right now. He is still in morning for Krissi. This isn’t going to bring her back, no matter what they think. They need to look into themselves to see what part everybody played in this, not just Nick. Everybody needs a lot of prayer.”

Famous After Death: A Novel

Famous After Death: A Novel

Noel Hammersmith used to have dreams of fame as a playwright, not to mention personal happiness. But in 1984 his girlfriend has just decamped, he’s putting on poundage by the day, and his literary success stems from the self-help tomes he edits at Acropolis Books–an outfit he can’t help calling Necropolis. Yes, this New Yorker is a dab hand at acquiring and then whittling down titles such as The All-Poison Diet and the stroke-of-genius alphabet series (which includes H Is for Hemorrhoid and P Is for Premature Ejaculation). What he’s not so good at is keeping his own weight–and consumerist obsessions–under control. As the hero of Benjamin Cheever’s Famous After Death becomes increasingly preoccupied with false advertising and corporate irresponsibility, he mounts a hilarious letter-writing campaign. Suffice it to say that the discontinuation of the Brooks Brothers Blue and the culinary degradation of Gerber Baby Food are very much on Noel’s mind. But there are hints that he’s involved in a deadlier sideline. Is he in fact the infamous Wordsworth Bomber, a man for whom “quality control was an issue worth killing people for”? Cheever’s third novel is an artful mix of Noel’s correspondence and journals. His transcriptions of his psychiatric visits alone are worth the price of admission. But this burlesque is also a serious–and seriously funny–examination of the distance between our values and the goods we seem to value more. Of course, in an
