London Designer Matty Bovan Unveils Purgatory-Themed Poster ’Zine

ART PROJECT: Emerging London talent Matty Bovan is falling deeper in love with newsprint with the launch of his second ’zine Need4Mead, in partnership with Jamie Allan Shaw, publisher of Enlarge Your Memories.
The limited edition, large-format magazine retails at 15 pounds at Donlon Books in Hackney, east London.
The title explores the idea of Purgatory and British folklore. “We had seen a lot of weird religious imagery and we decided to loosely base it on the idea of Purgatory and being in between Heaven and Hell,” Bovan said.
Images from photographer Dexter Lander are featured on one side and on the flip side are visuals shot by photographer Lucy Alex Mac. “This was the perfect dreamscape to bring everyone together as I wanted to work with Dexter Lander and [the Manchester-based artist] Rory Mullen and reunite with Lucy Alex Mac,” said Bovan of the collaboration.
Shot in York, Hartlepool and Manchester, images feature Bovan and friends inside the Cleveland College of Art and Design, with a church set in the background. Models are covered in face and body paint and are dressed in brown and white tunics. Their poses mimic those found in religious works of art.

Bonobos Signs First Designer Collab With Thaddeus O’Neil

Bonobos has launched its first designer collaboration.
The digital brand, which was acquired by Walmart last year for $ 310 million, has tapped Thaddeus O’Neil for an upscale, casually skewed assortment of men’s wear that made its debut on its web site and in two of its Guideshop stores on Thursday.
The Bonobos x Thaddeus O’Neil collaboration was inspired by the work of American architect Buckminster Fuller and offers T-shirts, cabana shirts, swimwear, casual pants and shorts, sweaters, outerwear, swimwear, knitwear and accessories. Prices range from $ 78 to $ 348.
Katie Boiano, vice president of design for Bonobos, said about a year ago, the company decided it wanted to partner with a designer “and Thaddeus was a natural fit based on his personal style and aesthetic.” Bonobos was especially drawn to the “vibrant colors and easygoing styles” that are hallmarks of O’Neil’s collection.
Thaddeus O’Neil grew up surfing on Long Island and was a member of the CFDA Incubator program. He designs a unisex line that he describes as “playwear” — looks that are bohemian, beachy and inspired by surf culture. The Bonobos assortment pays homage to the ocean, the earth and wildlife.

The collection launched at Bonobos on Thursday.

A Decade of Aje, Australian Designer Duo Infusing Art Into Clothing

SYDNEY — The setting was a subtropical garden in Lavender Bay overlooking the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Marking its 10th birthday, contemporary Australian label Aje had all things Brett Whiteley on its mind.
In staging their latest runway show, design pair Edwina Robinson and Adrian Norris, who founded the brand, dove into the archives of one of Australia’s most recognizable artists. Working with the artist’s former wife, Wendy Whiteley, who oversees his estate, the brand worked to replicate every detail of five artworks onto clothes and showcased their resort 2019 lineup in Whiteley’s private garden on Wednesday.
“I had to go back and forth between Art Gallery of NSW and hold them against the prints, to make sure the colors are the same,” explained Robinson.
“They’re really iconic pieces, that people would have only ever seen in books or very rarely in the top galleries,” Norris added. “The paint strokes are exactly the same the way we printed. It is a direct replica of the piece.”
The brand, perhaps because of Norris’ other career as a painter, has kept the art world close. In a previous collection, the two used the work of another seminal Australian name, the Aboriginal artist Minnie Pwerle, adding her vividly colored brushstroke

Molly Goddard Scoops BFC/British Vogue Designer Fashion Fund

MOLLY’S MARK: Molly Goddard, the designer known for her exaggerated proportions, puffs of tulle and smocked dresses inspired by children’s clothing, has won the 2018 BFC/British Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, an annual prize that comes with 200,000 pounds and mentoring for a 12-month period.
“Molly Goddard is an original, she has a singular vision that has propelled her label to an international level,” said Edward Enninful, editor in chief of British Vogue and chairman of the fund committee. “She is the definition of talent and what Britain does best in our creative industry.”
Goddard, who launched her label in 2014, was competing against David Koma, Huishan Zhang, Le Kilt, Marques’ Almeida and Rejina Pyo. The announcement was made Wednesday night at The Mayfair Hotel in London.
As part of the competition, which was created by the British Fashion Council and Vogue, brands lay out their business plans and collections in front of a judging panel, which this year included Enninful, Caroline Rush, Erdem Moralioglu, Gemma Metheringham, Helen David, Jourdan Dunn, Maria Hatzistefanis, Sarah Manley, Sarah Mower, Paul Price, Topshop and Xia Ding.
The fashion fund is supported by British Vogue, Burberry, Harrods, JD.com, Label/Mix, Paul Smith, Rodial and Topshop. Previous winners include Christopher Kane,

Sainsbury’s Tu Steps into the Designer Arena

TWO FOR TU: Sainsbury’s Tu, a fashion range from the British supermarket chain, has partnered with Graduate Fashion Week’s award winners on two collections — including its first line of men’s wear — that will launch on May 29.
Tu Womenswear Scholarship winner Laura Gillings has created a 16-piece collection that features tailored trousers and coordinating jackets, shirts, dresses, skirts and T-shirts in monochrome shades as well as orange, dark green and lilac. The Bath Spa University student said she took her cue from Sixties tailoring and the Rolling Stones. There will be another 16-piece drop later this year.
“Working with the team has been the best part of this experience,” said Gillings. “I’ve realized that I want to make my career designing for the high street. I want my designs to be accessible to everyone.”
London-based designer Henry Holland was her mentor for the project. “I think Laura adds lots of femininity to the androgynous. She has a really strong sense of color and print and an amazing level of design. Her approach to print is quite graphic, and she’s got an instinctive way of designing within a brief and a very strong signature, which I think is really good for Tu.”

New Designer Spotlight: Retrofête

“The Retrofête girl likes to party,” designer Ohad Seroya mused of a shimmery rack of party-attire that made up the new brand’s playful debut pre-fall and fall 2018 collections. After years of sifting through vintage troves, from Chelsea Market to the street markets in Berlin and Copenhagen, and dressing friends and family in their fashionable finds, Seroya and his husband Aviad Klin decided to try their hand at designing their own vintage-inspired treasures. So evolved the duo’s passion and hobby into full-blown fashion brand, Retrofête, which takes its name from “Vintage Party.”
“She likes to have fun, pushes the envelope and takes risks. She’s an insider and trend setter,” exclaimed Ohad of the Retrofête girl, “She is ‘wow’! There are no boundaries for the Retrofête girl.”
Both the pre-fall and fall collections are filled with sparkle and shine, a majority of pieces adorned fully with their main fabric: sequins. But these aren’t your average sequin party dresses. The duo prides themselves on unexpected takes on sequins, always playing with their dimension and color. For instance, an asymmetrical red check with sequins in a check print for pre-fall, or velvet and sequin wrap dresses for fall. Whether putting on a multi-colored sequined

H&M Taps Moschino for 2018 Designer Collaboration

Moschino, who took the “cheap and chic” ethos to a literal level with a diffusion line of the same name, is getting back into the high-low game with an H&M collaboration unveiled in the wee hours of its annual Saturday night party during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The tie-up was made in a surprise reveal during the annual dance party at the Corona Yacht Club near the festival grounds, just after midnight. Designer Jeremy Scott, who presided over the star-studded party, his 12th turn at the festival, should have no trouble translating his Moschino designs into less expensive and just as cheerful versions for the Swedish fast-fashion retailer.
Every year, fashion lovers and bargain hunters alike anticipate news of H&M’s latest designer collaboration the way sports fans wait for draft day. It’s hard at this point, after 16 years of the high-low mash-ups — the first of which was with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 — to say which collaboration has been the most spot-on. The Moschino effort may just be one of the more popular, judging from the way fans have snapped up Scott’s designs since he took over as creative director in 2013.

Graffiti Artist ‘JonOne’ Creates Candy Crush Collection for Fashion Designer Agnès b.

AGNÈS B’S SWEET ART: Agnès b.’s spring collection borrows from Candy Crush, but her label’s version features artwork by that name from the graffiti artist John “JonOne” Perello.
Unlike the rabidly popular smartphone game, the artist’s “Candy Crush” collection will include limited-run apparel and accessories for women and men. Known professionally as “JonOne,” the American-born artist got to know the designer after moving to Paris in the Eighties. After showing his work at her Galerie du Jour in Paris in 1989, Perello showed his work in two group shows at the gallery before having his first solo show “Fireworks” in 2015. His “Candy Crush” art was produced for the solo show in 2015.
That was a big year for Perello. After being commissioned for a large-scale work that is displayed in the French National Assembly in Paris in 2015, Perello’s work was reproduced as a French postage stamp. The American-born artist was awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur that same year.
In honor of the Candy Crush collection, Perello is creating three large canvases for its launch at agnès b.’s downtown New York store. Set to open on April 3, the exhibition will also feature the work of artists from The 156

Former Calvin Klein Designer Launches T-Shirt Line

Abby Moriarty never thought she would leave Calvin Klein, but six months after Raf Simons’ arrival, restructuring happened and she lost her job as vice president of design.
“I found myself at a loss,” said Moriarty. “It came as a big shock to me, but I started thinking about what I could do with all that I learned there.”
Moriarty, who helped lead design for the Calvin Klein White Label assortment that’s sold in department stores, decided to stick with American sportswear, but has taken a different approach. Called 1920, her men’s and women’s T-shirt line is grounded in modernist design — 1920 is the year the T-shirt was entered in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
“When I was at Calvin, I would travel four times a year to places like Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and we were always thinking about how can we get more for less and not thinking about the impact it’s having on our environment and our culture,” said Moriarty. “It really prompted me to take a step back and I saw how much fast fashion has influenced the market. And for a more commercial brand it was tough to compete with what they were doing. I really wanted

Canali Family Hires Designer, Stands by Namesake Company

MILAN — The Canali family is standing behind their 84-year-old namesake men’s wear company.
With a view to further expanding its collections, from formal to sportier looks and accessories, Canali has tapped Hyun-Wook Lee as its exclusive in-house designer.
“This is a very important step for us as it’s the first time we single out one designer to oversee all categories, and evolve the offer,” general manager Stefano Canali said Friday at the company’s showroom in Milan, ahead of the brand’s presentation on Saturday. Given Lee’s recent arrival at the company, his first collection for Canali will bow during Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June.
Born in Seoul in 1973, Lee comes to Canali with 17 years of experience in fashion, having worked at Berluti in Paris and contributed to its foray into men’s apparel. He previously worked at Ermenegildo Zegna, Versace and Gianfranco Ferré. Lee graduated in design and fine arts from the University of Chung-Ang in Seoul and has a background in art. He has created sculptures in wood and metal, designed jewelry and painted fabrics. In 2000, he specialized in fashion design at Milan’s Istituto Marangoni.

Designer Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Husband and Brand Cofounder Divorcing

It looks like the married owners of cult favorite boutique and brand Maryam Nassir Zadeh are headed for a split.
Eponymous founder Maryam Nassir Zadeh and her husband and business partner Uday Kak, who is also a photographer, made a contested divorce filing in a local Brooklyn court late last week. Documents in the case are sealed, but a contested filing generally means there is either a dispute over child custody, assets or both.
The now-former couple shares two daughters and public profiles list Zadeh and Kak as partners in the boutique, which has a storefront in New York’s Lower East Side, along with a popular e-commerce business. There is also a Maryam Nassir Zadeh line of shoes and bags, priced roughly between $ 400 and $ 900, as well as design-forward apparel, which Zadeh designs and has expanded over the last year.
Zadeh held her second fashion show in September at the East River Track in New York, with seating on bleachers and a surprise performance by Solange Knowles. She’s been producing seasonal collections since spring 2015.

The boutique carries a number of luxury designers, from the established to the new, like Marni, Rochas, Isabel Marant, Jacquemus, Lemaire, Jesse Kamm and Dumitrascu, and offers an

British Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane’s Personal Archive to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s New York

SHAUN’S SHOWCASE: The personal collection of British jewelry designer Shaun Leane is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York in December.
The designer said the collection represents “a level of creative freedom that has no parallel today and a time when jewelry, performance art and fashion fused as one. It has prompted questions in my own mind as to the important role the collection still has to play in conversations surrounding the relationship between these vital creative industries.”
He’s hoping the auction will address the questions he asked himself when making the jewels: “Is it art? Is it fashion? Is it jewelry?”
The sale is part of the auction house’s “A Life of Luxury” series, and will see 45 bespoke pieces thrust under the spotlight. Leane made the pieces for Alexander McQueen, his old friend and colleague of 17 years, for the latter’s shows and for Givenchy, and for clients such as Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Highlights include the coiled corset from McQueen’s The Overlook collection for fall 1999 to 2000 that took its cue from the film “The Shining.” It was created with 97 aluminum coils. There is also a silver crown of thorns

Real Housewives of Dallas’ D’Andra Simmons’ on Diamonds, Designer Gowns and Twitter Feuds Between Castmates

Season 2 of The Real Housewives of Dallas may just be getting started, but new housewife D’Andra Simmons has already established herself as having one of the best wardrobes of any Real Housewife in history (OK, maybe tied with Lisa Vanderpump). From her closet full of high-end designer gowns to her blinding collection of jewelry, the Dallas native’s style follows the age old saying, “everything’s bigger in Texas.”

Turns out, her impeccable wardrobe is thanks to flawless taste and her background in fashion — before transitioning into a business woman with her own beauty empire, she worked at Saks Fifth Avenue under Rose Marie Bravo (who later ran Burberry). During our conversation with Bravo’s breakout star, we learned so many fascinating fashion tidbits like this, that we’re sharing all the secrets to her stellar style, below.

She had a personal connection to Oscar de la Renta.

In the episode where D’Andra cleaned out her closet, eagle-eye viewers may have noticed the shocking number of Oscar de la Renta pieces she owned. “Before my husband, I was engaged to Oscar de la Renta’s godson and so I have a ton of Oscar de la Renta in my closet,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I’m not getting rid of the things before he passed away.”

Her closet is the size of a small home.

Since she owns so many designer pieces, her closet is massive. “Literally I can probably have a 10 person slumber party in there,” she says about the size of her closet. “What happened was when we moved into this house, which I built for myself as a single woman from the ground up, this person who designed my closet was a giant. She’s 6’2″ and I’m tiny so I’m always on a step stool and I can’t get to anything.”

As a result, she’s currently planning a complete overhaul of the space. “It’s going to be more functional because right now it is not at all functional. It’s very big but it’s not functional.”

She already has a fashion regret on the show.

Even with a closet full of designer clothes, it took her a minute to find her groove when it came to getting dressed for filming. She says the outfit she wore during the “Walking in Memphis” episode was her least favorite. “I was wearing my sweater inside out from Anthropologie. I had a bandana on my head. I’m like what the hell was I thinking? I think it was my first week of filming. I learned after that.”

She’s handling her haters like a pro.

Between Twitter feuds with castmates to hurtful comments from viewers on social media, she’s learning to take her new fame in stride. “It’s mean and at first I was upset.” she shared. “But now I’m thinking this is actually kind of funny. I’m just getting used to how this world works. And now I found the mute button so that’s fabulous. I would never block anyone because I want them to see what I’m doing and how fabulous my life is. I am not stupid enough to block them.”

WATCH: Which ‘Real Housewives’ Star Warned New Dallas Housewives About Doing the Show?

Shopping in Dallas is a serious sport.

To prep for shooting days, she shopped at a store called Tootsies in Dallas once a week for new pieces. “I go every week to pull clothes and most of the time I end up buying to be honest with you,” she says. “They have Carolina Herrera and Oscar . The Dallas store is more hip with trendy designers and more mainstream so you’ll see a lot of Alice + Olivia.”

Before her days on the show, she frequented the flagship Neiman Marcus store downtown. “If you shop downtown you’re old money socialite, if you shop other places you’re not necessarily,” she explains. “So I shop downtown with a private shopper and she would bring all the Oscar de la Renta, the Caroline Herrera, the lines I have worn for years and years. And we’d pick things to wear for my season.”

And the red carpet during Dallas’ society season is as cut-throat as Hollywood’s award circuit. “They keep a list of all the women who are socialites and what they’re going to wear so nobody overlaps,” D’Andra explains.

Her jewelry collection is massive.

Simmons’ mother, Dee Simmons, lets her have free rein of her jewelry collection. “I never need to buy jewelry. My dad said if my mother got up all night long every two minutes and changed jewelry she wouldn’t get through it all for the whole night.”

On the show, the ring she wears most often is a 24 karat yellow diamond. She has a second yellow diamond that checks in at 18 karats with smaller diamonds surrounding it. Also in her rotation? An 8-karat, 10-karat, and 16-karat ring, which she rotates between.

RELATED PHOTOS: All of the Real Housewives Who Have Denied Getting Plastic Surgery

D’Andra is following in her mom’s footsteps with her own beauty line, Hard Night Rough Morning.

Dee launched her own skincare line, Ultimate Living in 1996 as a way to provide the highest quality nutritional supplements and skin care products available. And in 2008 D’Andra launched her own skincare line, Hard Night Good Morning, with products that are also naturally derived. “We have certified organic aloe now as our main ingredient because aloe is much better, much more efficacious to carry the actives to the cellular level versus of water,” D’Andra says about her line. “If you have water as a first ingredient water evaporates, aloe penetrates.”

A lot of her ingredients come from sub-Saharan Africa because she studied the skincare routines of local women in Nairobi when she was living there. Out of her entire line, one of the best-selling products is the eye cream. “Everyone who tries the eye cream just loves it because it’s good for dark circles, puffiness, and anti aging, crow’s feet, wrinkles, elasticity, everything.”

There’s no word yet if D’Andra finally gets to take over the family business (a major plot of her story line on the show) but she has big plans for the company once she does. She recently moved the office to a newer, more contemporary building. And, yes, her mom brought all her ’90s relics with her.

The Real Housewives of Dallas airs Mondays (10 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Will Joe Biden Run in 2020? His Designer Daughter Ashley Sure Hopes So

A conversation with Livelihood founder Ashley Biden can’t help but turn to politics. Her former vice president father Joe provided the design inspiration for her contribution to the “Snoopy & Belle” exhibition that bows at Brookfield Place tonight.
After what she described as a sellout run with Gilt, Biden plans to roll out a holiday collection with retailers and online through her getinvolvedinyourhood.com. A relaunch for her site is planned for next month. Striving for economic equality, Biden said, “We focus a lot in this country on discussions of race which is very important to understand but I think we need to be united around socioeconomics and the inequities.”
As for whether Joe Biden will run for president in 2020, his daughter, who still works full-time in Philadelphia, said, “I hope so. He’s busier truly than ever. Right now his focus is on the [Biden] Foundation and Cancer Moonshot, as well as getting other Democrats elected. He’s not there. He’s taking it day by day after the loss of my dear beloved brother [Beau who died in 2015]…He’ll make a decision when that time comes,” she said. “It’s a little ways away. Former PPQ Designer Amy Molyneaux Sets New Venture

NEW BEGINNINGS: Amy Molyneaux, former designer of the British clothing label PPQ, is preparing to launch a collection of her own: a resort and swimwear brand called Lelloue.
Molyneaux has launched Lelloue with her business partner Helen Johnson, and the partners are taking a bold, unapologetically glamorous approach in order to stand out in an increasingly saturated resortwear market.
“With the new brand, I’m focusing on what I think is needed, where I see the gap in the market. There is a huge amount of resortwear that’s bohemian and hippie, but none that embraces this Nineties power glamour,” said Molyneaux of her debut range which includes bold maxi mesh cover-ups, leopard-print or polka dot bikinis and high-waisted pants and jumpsuits made from luxurious printed silks.

Paying tribute to the Tunisian designer’s love of craft and materials, the French leather goods house this fall is to dedicate a much bigger window to her work with a series of eight tableaux conceived by scenographer Nathalie Crinière in collaboration with Menchari set to go on display at the Grand Palais.
Titled “Hermès à tire-d’aile – Les mondes de Leïla Menchari,” which loosely translates as “The Hermès Worlds of Leïla Menchari,” the exhibition is set to run from Nov. 8 to Dec. 3.
A graduate of the Beaux-Arts, Menchari started working under Hermès’ former head of windows, Annie Beaumel, in the early Sixties. She took over designing the house’s windows from 1978 to 2013, working with a number of artisans from the Hermès universe and beyond, ranging from stone-cutters to sculptors, while also directing the Hermès color committee.
Windows created by Menchari have included giant waves crafted from marble, fantasy Kelly bags made out of metal, multicolored saddles with wings and a Paris-themed window with monuments in organza.

Patron Stella McCartney and Jury Choose Lara Krude as Designer for Tomorrow in Berlin

GIRLS’ CLUB: “Hi Stella. I know you’re there,” chimed a red-capped and former Designer for Tomorrow patron Alber Elbaz in a well-wisher video aired at the 10th edition of the student designer competition held in Berlin last week. Stella McCartney was back for her second turn as Designer for Tomorrow patron for this diamond anniversary, and once again, the designer and jury’s five finalists, culled from 200 European hopefuls, was an all-girls’ lineup. The winner, Lara Krude of Hamburg’s University of Applied Sciences, will have mentoring sessions with McCartney as well as a further round of workshops and internships through Designer for Tomorrow sponsor, the German specialty store chain Peek & Cloppenburg.
Krude’s women’s wear capsule, “Was Bleibt” or “What Remains,” impressed with her take on men’s wear tailoring and ensemble thinking gone awry, combined with a sensitive color sense, fine finishing and individual detailing. Last year’s winner, Edda Gimnes, was also back with her first runway show, her signature hand-drawn prints now full color and generally full flush, but sometimes also just a loosely sketched detail such as pockets or the back yoke on otherwise solid jackets and pants.
“A part of the reason to come back,” McCartney said, “is that beyond

Dubai-Based Designer Rami Al Ali Considers Paris Location

TAKING FLIGHT: Syrian designer Rami Al Ali is thinking about establishing a permanent presence in Paris for his namesake label.
“Paris is an important window display for the world,” said the Dubai-based designer, who showcased his fall couture collection at the Ritz Paris hotel. Around 85 percent of his clients are from the Gulf region, he said, describing them as young jet-setters who want to stand out.
Al Ali, who usually works with neutral hues and metallics, ventured into new territory this season: dusty pink.
“Everyone was afraid it would be too girly,” he said, gesturing towards the array of structured gowns in tulle, organza and silk gazar. His inspiration came from a late 19th-century portrait of an angel by the American painter Abbott Handerson Thayer, which drew him with its mix of innocence and strength.
“The color gives lightness,” he said, lifting a heavy fold. He declined reveal what secret material sewn between the layers gave it heft. “That would be getting into the spices of the kitchen,” he said with a smile.
One bright dress brought a colorful tang to the collection. Deep crimson, it was made of the thinnest, airy silk. It was easy to see how the recurring theme of vertical

David Delfín, Spanish Designer, Dies at 46

MÁLAGA, Spain — Spanish designer David Delfín died Saturday at age 46. The cause of death, according to press reports, was brain cancer.
The designer was a popular figure in Málaga, which is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas.
Delfín was considered the “enfant terrible” of Spanish fashion. On Sunday morning, Antonio Banderas shared his grief with his Facebook followers, saying that “all of Miami Fashion Week” was weeping over the well-liked designer’s death.
Born in Ronda in 1970 and raised in Marbella, Diego David Domínguez González, better known as David Delfín, died in Madrid, where he had founded the Daviddelfin brand, in association with the Postigo siblings (Deborah, Diego and Gorka), and his model-muse Bimba Bosé, who also died of cancer in January.
It takes a true aficionado to work out exactly how Bosé and Delfín, cousins several times removed, fit into the family tree of matador Luis Miguel Dominguín, her mother being Lucía González Bosé (a.k.a. Lucía Dominguín). Like his singer-actor-designer-ambassador-comrade in arms, Delfín had a taste for the spectacular.
His claim to fame was his very first Mercedes-Benz catwalk show in Madrid in 2002. In protest against the war in Afghanistan, the designer featured bare-breasted, noose-clad models with sacks on their

Paco Rabanne’s Julien Dossena Is the Latest Designer on the L.A.-Tokyo Express

Paco Rabanne creative director Julien Dossena is the latest designer to take inspiration from the California desert and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival scene. Dossena came to Los Angeles after his first appearance at the Met Ball (with date Michelle Monaghan) to celebrate a collaboration with Just One Eye on two exclusive styles of the Paco Element bag.
The small and medium bucket totes, which launched during Coachella, were fashioned in nude and camel vegetable-dyed leather and retail for $ 1150 and $ 1390, respectively.
“The leather tans with the sun, we thought it was kind of L.A.,” said Dossena, who used a silver material for the liner to represent the technology industry of the Golden State.
The Elements bag was introduced two years ago and fashioned after a leather dress Dossena created in one of his early collections since taking the design helm at Paco Rabanne four years ago.

Neiman Marcus Sells ‘Destroyed’ Designer Sneakers For $1,425

We’ve all seen “distressed” jeans before, but this “destroyed” sneaker takes shabby chic to a whole new level.

Neiman Marcus is selling $ 1,425 “Future Destroyed High-Top Sneakers” from luxury designer Maison Margiela on its website, and it the shoes completely live up to their name. The men’s sneakers are so mangled and dirty, they look like they previously moonlighted as a chew toy for dogs.

Considering Maison Margiela outfitted Katy Perry in this design for the Met Gala, the shoes are right in line with the house’s avant garde-inspired style:

The description for the shoe is hilarious, calling it “highly distressed.” But look at all of its features!

  • Leather and textile upper
  • Round toe
  • Lace-up front with side lace guards
  • Logo patch at tongue
  • Padded collar
  • Cushioned heel counter
  • Rubber outsole

Who needs fresh kicks when these distressed ones have a cool patch and a cushioned heel? Hurry if you’d like to buy a pair, as it appears there are only two sizes left.

If those shoes aren’t quite your style, Maison Margiela is also offering another interesting pair of shoes, called the Pollock Paint-Splatter sneaker. Though they sort of look like a pigeon Jackson Pollock-ed on them, they’re “only” $ 595.

If you’re interested in purchasing any of the shoes, we suggest wearing them with these $ 425 Nordstrom jeans that are covered in fake mud OR these delightful mom jeans with clear plastic kneecaps

Women for Women International Charity Raises Money From Designer Donations

DESIGNER DOLLARS: “The mood has been excellent,” said Charlotte Olympia Dellal, the founder and owner of footwear firm Charlotte Olympia, referring to the designer car boot sale in London’s Soho on Saturday. “It’s a fun day out, and we love seeing all the women getting excited for shoes as women do. I love that this is all going to charity,” added Dellal, who is an ambassador for Women for Women International U.K. The nonprofit humanitarian organization aims to provide financial and educational support to women survivors conflict and poverty.
Charlotte Olympia, Edeline Lee and Temperley London were among the number of British and international labels that sold clothing, beauty items and artwork for the second Women for Women charity car boot sale — similar to a garage sale — that took place in London’s Soho. The event has raised more than 150,000 pounds, or $ 194,009, so far, with the rest of the items to be listed on eBay May 15. Every item sold will go toward the charity organization’s work in helping women survivors of conflict.

This Is Rei Kawakubo, The Designer Breaking Down Binaries At The Met

Categories can be presented as choices, but more often, they designate limitations to our freedom. Between options lurks an “or,” a subtle warning of our “this or that” restrictions.

“Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” the exhibition opening this week at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, operates differently. The show, honoring iconic Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, is divided into several categorical pairings, such as “Then/Now,” “East/West,” “High/Low,” and even “Clothes/Not Clothes.” Yet the slash stuck between each pairing isn’t intended as an “or.” Instead, it’s meant to demarcate an in-between, a space that turns dichotomies into cacophonous harmonies.

The exhibition, decisively described as not a retrospective, features 150 garments from Kawakubo’s collections, divided into binary categories she then proceeds to break down. All of the pieces are presented at eye-level, so the viewer can properly observe the magic of their construction. There is no wall text whatsoever, a nod to Kawakubo’s consistent refusal to define her work in rigid terms. “The meaning is that there is no meaning,” she said in 1995.

The designer was born in Tokyo in 1942, the oldest of three children and the only girl. At university, Kawakubo studied the history of aesthetics, which incorporated elements of Asian and Western Art. It was in 1973 when she established her now-famous label Comme des Garçons (which means “like some boys”), opening her first store just two years later.

Kawakubo made her Western debut in Paris in 1982, disrupting the era’s wave of glamorous power suits with saggy, lopsided black frocks accentuated with holes, shredded fabric and excess layers of more black. Like many great avant-garde works of art, Kawakubo’s collection was initially met with shock and disdain; critics described it as “ragged chic,” “Hiroshima’s revenge” and “post atomic.”

One of her most iconic collections came over 10 years later with the spring/summer 1997 collection “Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body,” featuring skintight stretch dresses pulled over ballooning pads. The form-hugging attire accentuated the pads’ bizarre humps and swelling, radically transfiguring the wearer’s silhouette. The dresses, which were later adapted into costumes for a Merce Cunningham dance, epitomize Kawakubo’s radical ability to defy the assumptions about clothes you never knew you had.

Even if you’re not into identifying fashion designers, recognizing Kawakubo’s work is a cinch. Mostly because her designs barely resemble clothing at all, boldly defying the laws clothes are intended to serve. Most garments cater to the body of their wearer ― flattering the figure by enhancing certain body parts and downplaying others, all in accordance with ideal beauty standards. Even more fundamentally, they follow certain elementary guidelines ― for example, shirts and pants have a set amount of holes.

For Kawakubo, these items of clothing are hardly that simple. As she told The Guardian: “I built my work from within instead of satisfying a demand for sexualised and ostentatious clothing.”

At times, a Commes des Garçons piece can resemble a cocoon or a gift in haphazard wrapping paper. Some tops contain far too may holes for human arms to occupy, as if designed with another species in mind; others have none at all. Many feature bulging protuberances, while other extreme finishing touches like ruffles or collars seem to be exacting revenge on the wearer.

Kawakubo’s designs tend to transform those who don them into mythical personae, otherworldly creatures or conceptual artworks. Instead of aspiring to make a woman look long and lean, Kawakubo endows her models with pillowy hunchbacks and architectural nests for hair, destabilizing the gaze that often governs fashion.

For centuries, the act of dressing up has proven capable of turning women into characters ― the bride, the professional, the vixen, the princess, the tomboy. The ability to embody an alter ego just by slipping on a dress can be liberating, though of course, the range of available characters can also be limiting. They can seem like choices that, in reality, are anything but.

Kawakubo, however, explodes the vault, queering established feminine tropes and ushering in the masculine, the inanimate, the surreal. Instead of being an “old Hollywood starlet” for a night, how about a pillowcase? A cluster of barnacles? A cobweb? Kawakubo’s clothing invites women to transcend and transmute their bodies, weaving fairytales from their own flesh. In Commes des Garçons’ world, there are no stereotypes, no laws, no masters and no categories: the freedom is absolute and often breathtaking.

You might not realize how similarly individuals dress until you set eyes on a woman wearing what looks like a blowfish carcass, something so unmistakably distinct. Even at The Met Gala, where Kawakubo was the theme, Rihanna’s army of petals ― one of the few actual Comme des Garçons dresses worn ― made jaws drop.

Today, Kawakubo is known as one of the most respected designers of all time ― only the second living designer to be honored with a Met exhibition, after Yves Saint Laurent’s in 1983. Some repeated themes in Kawakubo’s work include the colors black and red, bulging shapes, punk plaid, allusions to bridal and princess gowns ― somehow mangled and resuscitated ― tattered holes, shredded layers, asymmetrical hems and a sculptural intensity that’s rarely seen on the human body.

Most of all though, she’s defined by her inability to be defined. Her work’s most identifiable quality is its sense of boundlessness, which brings into being visions so viscerally peculiar most of us couldn’t conjure them in a dream state. In an interview with The New Yorker, the famously silent Kawakubo revealed that she had “never belonged to a movement, followed a religion, subscribed to an ideology, or worshipped a hero.”

She has even denounced those who have hailed her a feminist icon, refusing to belong to any such category. “I am not a feminist,” she said in 2009. “I was never interested in any movement as such. I just decided to make a company built around creation, and with creation as my sword, I could fight the battles I wanted to fight.”

Comme des Garçons does, however, liberate women from the monolithic male gaze, from the fashionable tradition of dressing up as a mode of self-improvement. But the label does more. It frees art from existing, cold and untouched, in glass cases and frames. It releases pants from the expectation of being two-legged. And it emancipates human beings from their flesh, inviting people to embody intangible ideas that defy categorization.

“Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” runs until September 4 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. See photos from The Met Gala here.

Trunk Club Links With ‘La La Land’ Costume Designer Mary Zophres

The “La La Land” effect is still going strong in fashion post-Oscars season.
The Nordstrom-owned styling and shopping concept Trunk Club has linked with Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres to curate looks inspired by the film with hopes the movie will remind men and women to incorporate color and classic style into their wardrobe (through more shopping, natch).
An invite-only event at Trunk Club’s Los Angeles space on April 11 is timed to the movie’s digital HD release the same day and its home theater release on April 25. Zophres will be on hand to help guest curate looks from Nordstrom during the cocktail-hour event.

The movie’s characters, Mia and Sebastian, played by Best Actress winner Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, exemplify themes similar to the Trunk Club ethos, according to Zophres: investing in essential pieces and building a timeless and personalized wardrobe.

Canadian Fur Designer Lysa Lash Going Extra Miles to Court Customers

FUR CANADA: As a fourth-generation furrier, Lysa Lash’s customized service is surprisingly similar to the attentiveness her relatives showed to their customers years ago.
Rather than wholesale her collection of easy-to-throw-on fur pieces, she sells limited-edition items at invitation-only trunk shows. Now holding these events at the Mark Hotel in New York and the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Montreal and 13 other cities, Lash said 50 to 60 women will typically show up. On-the-clock professionals blitz by for 20-minute purchases and nonworking mothers are more inclined to linger for an hour or more over a glass of wine. Regardless of their schedules, repeat shoppers know that what you see is what you get, and if they choose to wait, they very well may lose the item to a more decisive customer. On average, 85 percent of attendees buy something from the line which is offered at wholesale prices. Fox vests retail between $ 2,000 and $ 3,000 and mink jackets are in the $ 4,000 to $ 5,000 range. Her on-the-go options include a forest green short jacket, fur ponchos, a sheared beaver jacket and a rex quack with toggles, and nonbasic colors are offered.

Hollywood Designer Adrian to Be Celebrated at the Museum at FIT

LIGHTS, CAMERAS: Going Hollywood meant a one-name moniker for the costume designer Adrian, who was more often than not associated with Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow and the other marquee actresses he dressed.
That part of his portfolio, as well as his ready-to-wear designs, will be explored in “Adrian: Hollywood and Beyond,” an exhibition that bows at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology on March 7 and runs through April 1. Researched by graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice program, the show will home in on Adrian’s unexpected use of textiles, such as a Wesley Simpson cloth that was illustrated by Salvador Dalí. That will be among the garments showcased with textiles, ads and film clips that show Adrian’s use of printed textiles and unexpected construction methods. At the height of his career at MGM Studios, the designer’s creations were believed to be the most copied clothes in the world, since millions were tuning in to watch the big names, he suited up for the silver screen. The event received more RSVPs than ever — with it tripling in interest over last season.
“We have more designers this season than we’ve ever had. I think that it’s time, we are growing and this is evidence that things are taking off,” said founder Wilbur Pack Jr.
The evening was host to a half-dozen emerging designers of color. Among them was Tanisha Middleton, founder of the Framed by Tee Tee online eyewear business.
Middleton produces sunglasses in her New York residence, selling them directly to consumers through her web site. Prices range from approximately $ 25 to $ 100. Custom designs can cost more.
“It’s worth it. It’s a joy to see your vision come to life and to see people wearing your things,” she said of the efforts she invests in operating her own business.
Another exhibitor, Laura Tatum, owns and operates Bunny Paige jewelry out of Cleveland, Ohio. Her glitzy designs are priced from $ 45 to upward of $ 350. Last year, she quit her job to focus on jewelry full-time.
“In the climate we live in right now, it’s incredibly important to put ourselves out there, to come together and

Nicki Minaj Says ‘Racism’ Is The Reason This Designer Won’t Take Her Call

Giuseppe, what’s good?

Nicki Minaj put the acclaimed Italian luxury shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti on blast Friday after the brand’s PR people apparently refused to take Minaj’s call.

The rapper unleashed a tweetstorm about the incident, and here’s how it went down:

[Editor’s note: Minaj did wear the sneakers, though it appears she wore them for Glamour in 2011.]

The 34-year-old entertainer’s problems with Zanotti arose when she found out the designer was making capsule collections with other artists (most recently Zayn Malik and Jennifer Lopez), which would presumably give the collaborator a share of the shoe’s profits.

Minaj claimed that because she was black, she could only “inspire” Zanotti, but not partner with him:

Minaj retweeted a fan’s photo of some of the “Nicki” shoes that show up when you search for them in the designer’s collection:

Toward the end of her Twitter call-out, Minaj said she wouldn’t permit this “racism and disrespect.” She called on her fans to start Tweeting or Instagramming the hashtag #GiuseppeWhatsGood, a reference to her famous line to Miley Cyrus at the MTV Awards.

Soon enough, her #Giuseppe hashtag was trending on Twitter:

Minaj again clarified to fans that is wasn’t about the money, “just the disrespect:”

UPDATE, 3:21 p.m.:  Zanotti appears to have taken the “Nicki” shoes down from his website, which led to another round of tweets from Minaj:

The Huffington Post reached out to Minaj and Zanotti and will update this post accordingly.

Fifth-Generation Blum & Fink Buys Mycra Pac Designer Wear for an Undisclosed Sum

MYCRA PAC SOLD: One of New York’s longstanding outerwear powerhouses, Blum & Fink Inc., has added Mycra Pac Designer Wear to its stable of labels.
The latest addition to the stable of Blum & Fink, a fifth-generation family-run outerwear business, adds a new specialty to its existing brands Fleurette and Trilogy. The 20-person West 29th Street company operates under the leadership of Stanley Blum and his daughters Robyn Kaplan and Margot Arbusman. Creative director Michael McCollom is the exclusive designer for all three collections.
Known for its reversible, packable and travel rainwear and accessories, Mycra Pac Designer Wear was started in 1991 by Sharon Huebschwerlen, who sold the company for an undisclosed sum to Blum & Fink last month. Now sold in 590 specialty and department stores, the label was based on the premise that coats should be worn as accessories and could be changed regularly as if they were jewelry, according to Kaplan, Blum & Fink’s vice president.
Her grandfather, Robert Blum, started the company in 1958 with Sidney Fink specializing in fur outerwear before branching out into other types. The bulk of MPDW products will be manufactured in a factory in the Northeast that Blum & Fink has relied on to

Lil Yachty Named Creative Designer at Nautica

Nautica and Lil Yachty are deepening their relationship.
The heritage brand has brought the rapper on as a creative designer for 2017. This comes after Lil Yachty served as the face of a Nautica capsule collection for Urban Outfitters that was released last year.
In the role, the artist will design capsule collections and appear in digital and social media advertising campaigns. Nautica said these capsule collections will include rereleased vintage styles along with classic sportswear.
Long before partnering with Nautica officially, the 19-year-old was an enthusiast who regularly wore vintage styles from the brand, which connected with his affinity for all things nautical. He’s a part of a collective of artists who call themselves “The Sailing Team” and his stage name comes from “The Yacht Club,” a name he and his group of friends created in high school.
“Nautica is like a part of me,” said Lil Yachty, who’s known for his signature red, beaded braids. “It’s for kids, sailors, grown men and cool people.  The designs — the old designs, the new designs, I think it’s dope. There’s not really much out there like Nautica.”
Nautica on Friday released a limited-edition collection of pieces curated by Lil Yachty that included rereleases of vintage

New Designer Spotlight: Marina Moscone

SISTER ACT: Marina Moscone and her sister, Francesca, grew up in Vancouver and ultimately pursued different career paths: Marina in fashion and Francesca in business. Last spring, the duo came together to launch Marina Moscone, the New York-based women’s ready-to-wear label.
Marina earned a degree in fashion degree from The New School’s Parsons School of Design and started working for Total Management, where she was an agent for photographers and stylists. “I graduated Parsons during the recession, and designers weren’t being hired,” Marina said. “At Total, I met people who I work with in the industry now [as a designer]….It ended up giving me a 360-degree perspective of the fashion business.”
Two years later, Marina landed a design gig at Peter Som, eventually becoming the brand’s design director. She spent four-and-a-half years at the company before breaking out to launch her eponymous label last spring, all of it made in New York using Italian fabrics.
“We’re Italian, and we grew up a lot spending our summers in Italy, where our father is from,” Marina said of her and her sister Francesca, who focuses on business and production side of things. “For the first collection, I was thinking a lot about our girl and

British Men’s Wear Designer Martine Rose Makes Her Mark

LONDON — British men’s wear designer Martine Rose is determined to build a business on her own terms. The designer, who dropped off the men’s fashion week calendar nearly four years ago and is consulting for Balenciaga, has been presenting her collections — full of oversize silhouettes, reworked fabrics and denim — in a variety of formats. It’s proving successful: Retailers including Matchesfashion.com, Barneys and Selfridges have picked up her line for spring 2017, and she is currently stocked at Opening Ceremony.
“The whole experience is quite an organic one for me, and always has been,” Rose said. “I always try for the This slideshow could not be started. So when eager brides race to Belle’s Bridal Shop, a posh bridal salon in Chicago, in search of their dream dress, Juliana must keep their emotions in check while managing a team of temperamental seamstresses. These daily challenges are merely one of the many pins in the pincushion for Juliana, a single, working mother trying to fill a huge void left by her former spouse. Still nursing her wounds from her failed marriage, Juliana avoids sharing her marital status for fear of spooking her wide-eyed brides with the sad reality that storybook weddings can end up in the discounted fiction aisle. Even so, Juliana stubbornly clings to her fantasy with her new love interest. Absorbed by the notion that she has finally found a down-to-earth man to build a life with, Juliana ignores the warning signs. Can she find a way to love again and have a family, or is she a hopeless romantic meant to live her life married to her business?

Heys Disney Frozen Designer Elsa Luggage Case

Heys Disney Frozen Designer Elsa Luggage Case

Designed Especially for Kids. The ”Designer Disney’ collection was created by Heys with the unique characteristics of children in mind, as it incorporates several design features that benefit children. These beautiful cases have Disney characters specially printed onto their hardshell surfaces. There are a variety of unique character prints in this collection; these prints include popular Disney characters such as Frozen, Princesses, Cars, Fairies, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Doc. Mcstuffins, Sofia and many more. In creating a ‘High-end’ series for Disney, our designers incorporated several children-specific features. One of these is the internal ‘reversed-curved’ handle system that curves the handle inwards & upwards closer to the child, making it much more comfortable for the child – at a low height – to hold and navigate the case. The Patent Protected design of this case also allows the wheels to ‘protrude’ out. This protrusion keeps the case elevated, so that even when being rolled at a very low height off the floor, the wheels will be the only point of contact and the case will continue to roll with ease. The cases weigh in at a mere 3.7 lbs, and feature our inline skate wheels that make their rolling even smoother, so any child can easily wheel these fun cases around. They also have a zipper closure system, that when opened reveals a beautifully lined interior as well as a zippered divider for internal organization.

Met to Sell Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and Other Designer Products Inspired by ‘Manus x Machina’ Exhibition

NEW YORK — The opening of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is still a few weeks away, but limited-edition designer merchandise inspired by the exhibition has already been selected.
As of May 5, museum goers will find jewelry, handbags, scarves, stationery, books and postcards amidst the more than 150 items. As a nod to the fact that fashion insiders like to be first, the museum will launch the collection online May 2 to celebrate this year’s Met Ball that night. All of the merchandise will be offered in its Fifth Avenue main-floor store on May 5, timed to the official exhibition opening for the public.
Gleaning shopping preferences from the in-store assortment that was offered for last year’s blockbuster “China: Through the Looking Glass” show, The Met’s retail team is focusing on smaller items that retail for $ 500 or less. Small, lightweight items that are not cumbersome for tourists or out-of-towners to carry in their bags or stash in suitcases are consistently popular, according to a staffer in the museum’s retail division. Exclusive offerings include a $ 385 silk chiffon Alexander McQueen scarf. With prices ranging from $ 425 to $ 925, Issey

London Designer Katie Eary Teams With KFC on Capsule Collection

PLAYING CHICKEN: KFC has recruited edgy London men’s wear designer Katie Eary in its mission to demonstrate how much can be done in a lunch hour.
As part of the fast food brand’s #PackMoreIntoLunch campaign, KFC challenged Eary to create a capsule women’s wear collection for spring 2016 in 60 minutes.
On the day of the challenge, 25 machinists sewed like crazy to create 13 looks, worn by 10 models in a catwalk show at the Old Truman Brewery in London.
The collection, like the playful and irreverent men’s wear Eary is known for, was brightly colored, with a palette rooted in fluorescent orange and green.
Butterflies were the print motif, superimposed over hypersized KFC chickens — it shouldn’t have worked but it did. Floaty silk chiffon minidresses and cropped tops came with a lovely ostrich feather trim in neon green.
A red bias-cut slipdress that reached just above the ankles managed to be sexy and sophisticated, while the twist-front swimsuits had definite commercial appeal.
Of course, some preparations had been made. The collection had been finalized two weeks before: All the patterns had been made, and almost everything had been pre-cut for the 60-minute sew-a-thon.
There was a rawness to some looks that probably wasn’t intentional,

New Designer Spotlight: Gian Kamal

Everything is energy and the energy that one puts in something can be felt by others. That’s the premise that moved fashion publicist, energy worker and artist Corinna Springer to launch Gian Kamal loungewear.
The name stems from Springer’s spiritual name, which means “the consciousness of the pure lotus” in the Sikh tradition. “I like to refer to it as ‘energetically enhanced.’ It’s all about creating something that feels exceptionally good,” she explained.
The collection starts with Springer’s collages and paintings, which are photographed and then printed onto sustainable silk sourced in India. Pieces include languid caftans, kimono wraps, jumpsuits, pajama bottoms and silk T-shirts “ideal for meditation, sleep and lounging.” Prices range from $ 200-$ 800.

Cynthia Vincent Latest Designer to Partner With O’Neill

PRINT PLAY: The tribal and floral prints Cynthia Vincent is known for will soon be on the wetsuits and swimwear of O’Neill.
It’s the surfwear brand’s second time partnering with a designer and follows the rollout of fall pieces done in conjunction with Anna Sui, which hit stores a few weeks ago and saw quick sell-through on pieces such as a cream-colored kimono and crochet bikini.
“We’re really careful to partner with someone who will elevate our current looks,” said O’Neill women’s design director Rachael Hill. “There’s definitely synergy there. [The designer collaborations are] not necessarily a departure for us as much as it is an expansion and kind of captivating another customer we wouldn’t get otherwise.”
The collection for summer 2016 is expected to hit retail in April and is organized into three categories: sportswear, retailing from $ 59.50 to $ 99.50; swim, ranging from $ 46 to $ 110; and wetsuits priced between $ 140 to $ 200.
The company’s now turned to its holiday collection, which will also infuse designs from Vincent and could possibly include party dresses, chunky sweaters and giftable items, such as cosmetic bags or footwear. However, Hill said the collection is still in its early stages.
Additional designer collaborations are possible for the future

Caleres, Saint Louis Fashion Fund Name Emerging Designer Finalists

On Monday night, a bit of the Midwest came to New York City for the announcement of the Caleres Emerging Designer Award finalists, presented by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund. Designers from six brands were recognized in contention for the award, a $ 25,000 grant to be chosen on Nov. 4, during Saint Louis Fashion Week: Julie Haus and Jason Alkire of Haus Alkire, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta, Azede Jean-Pierre, Katharine Polk of Houghton, Brandon Sun, and Jordana Warmflash of Novis.
The announcement came in the form of a cocktail party, held at the Caleres (formerly known as Brown Shoe Company) and Sam Edelman showroom in Midtown Manhattan, and hosted by Diane Sullivan, chief executive officer, president and chairman of Caleres, along with Sam and Libby Edelman, Tomoko Ogura, Roopal Patel, Lisa Perry and Gary Wassner. Before presenting the finalists, Elizabeth Tucker, creator of Saint Louis Fashion Week, gave a brief introduction about the importance of the program. “The startup scene is booming in the city of Saint Louis, so I would love to recognize Diane Sullivan for her vision and realizing that a huge part of this equation is attracting, retraining and developing designers as a part of

British Designer Claire Barrows Hosts Pop-up, Revamps Website

SECRET STORE: To coincide with the launch of her revamped Web site, Claire Barrow will host a “secret” pop-up store, offering limited-edition designs beginning Aug. 7. Shoppers can sign up on clairebarrow.com to receive a code to gain access to shop at the pop-up.
The online shopping area will offer 24 pieces including silk scarves, ruffle tops, tote bags, shirts, sew-on patches and leather coats and jackets. Designed exclusively for the store, the pieces have been hand-painted by Barrow. In addition, she’s selling a series of leather iPhone cases designed together with The Case Factory. The price range is 20 pounds, or $ 31, for a painted patch to 1,500 pounds, or $ 2,340, for a lambskin leather swing coat.
“It’s a pre-collection, but very limited edition, each thing having been hand-painted, dyed, etc. by myself,” Barrow told WWD. “Like all my collections, it has a story behind it. The idea of hand-painting things to sell online inspired the collection because it got me thinking about art you can wear and e-commerce; it’s a bit like being in the [museum] gift shop rather than the gallery. From this idea I constructed a curated ‘gift shop’ range of products for a make-believe museum of ancient erotic

This Designer Evening Gown Collection Is Straight Out of a Fairy Tale

With petal-soft colors, delicate lace, and frothy tulle, the gowns from Alberta Ferretti‘s limited-edition spring 2016 evening collection felt like they were sprung to life from the closet of a fairy-tale princess. The pieces were inspired by her castle too, with embroidery, golden accents, and sprays of flowers all created to mimic the ornate finishings that would have decorated a grand 19th-century estate.

The extreme glamour was completely intentional: Ferretti’s evening collection is priced approximately 25 to 30 percent higher than her signature range, per WWD, and is made with the most elegant of events in mind. In other words, add Queen Maxima’s pearl-and-diamond tiara and you’re ready to go.

And if you like princess gowns, you’ll obviously need a princess braid:

Rihanna’s Met Gala Dress Designer Didn’t Actually Want Her to Wear It

rihanna

Chinese couturier Guo Pei became an international fashion superstar the moment Rihanna took her first step on the Met Gala red carpet in May—but if the designer had her way, RiRi wouldn’t have worn it at all.

“I actually didn’t think the dress was the right one for her,” Guo told WWD. “I thought it would be too heavy and too hot, but she was so touched the moment she put it on.”

Bad-gal RiRi knows what works for her, though. The embroidered cape with fur trim and mile-long train was arguably the most photographed—and talked-about—dress of fashion’s biggest night. Pei revealed that the cape weighs 55 pounds and took nearly two years to make. Talk about conviction!

Breaking: Donna Karan to Step Down as Lead Designer of Her Brand

donna-karan
Donna Karan taking her final runway bow during New York Fashion Week in February.

Breaking designer news: Donna Karan is stepping down from namesake company, Donna Karan International.

WWD reports that the 66-year old designer is leaving the design world to focus on her philanthropic work with Urban Zen, which according to its web site, aims to “raise awareness and inspire change in the areas of preservation of cultures, well-being and education.”

“I have arrived at a point in my life where I need to spend more time to pursue my Urban Zen commitment to its fullest potential and follow my vision of philanthropy and commerce with a focus on health care, education and preservation of cultures,” Karan told WWD. “After considering the right time to take this step for several years, I feel confident that DKI has a bright future and a strong team in place.”

This announcement comes right on heels of the April announcment that Public School designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, would become designers for Karan’s contemporary brand, DKNY.

To say Donna Karan is a fashion industry icon is an understatement. She was an integral part of building the foundation of American fashion design, having come up alongside Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass in the ’80s. What’s more, she was one of the few female designers, designing for women—which earned her a devoted female fanbase who felt she really understood their bodies and their needs.

After assisting Anne Klein for several years, the New York native started her namesake label in 1985, with what would become her signature “seven easy pieces.” She envisioned the interchangeable jersey bodysuits, dresses, cocoon blazers etc, would become the foundation of a woman’s wardrobe. And they did.

Karan has been bestowed every significant fashion award there is and most notably, her eighth CFDA award came in 2003 for Lifetime Achievement. She was also one of Glamour’s Women of the Year in 2007.

Update: According to a statement from Donna Karan International, the firm will not seek to replace Karan as Chief Designer for the Donna Karan label quite yet. Shows and collections will be suspended for a period of time.

You Know That Waxy Turquoise And Purple Cup That’s So ’90s? Meet Its Genius Designer

You may not know its name, but we know you’ve seen the classic squiggly design that’s most recognizable from paper cups.

Yeah, you know what we’re talking about — that purple and turquoise pattern that hits you with giant pangs of nostalgia. The “Jazz” design began showing up on paper cups about 23 years ago. Recently, an AMA request came in from a Reddit user who wanted to know who the designer was. That pushed reporter Thomas Gounley of Missouri’s Springfield News-Leader to do some digging.

The iconic design.

After much investigation, Gounley was successful and last week he discovered that 50-year-old Gina Ekiss, who lives in Aurora, Mississippi, is the iconic design’s creator, according to his piece in the News-Leader. Ekiss, who’s now a custom frame shop manager at a Hobby Lobby, was met with Internet acclaim as the discovery spread across social media outlets.

“I’m just still pretty stunned about the whole deal,” Ekiss told ABC News in reaction to her Internet stardom. “I’m thrilled that it’s still popular.”

http://solojazz.tumblr.com/post/121874087614/meet-gina-the-designer-of-the-solo-jazz-cup

The path to finding Ekiss wasn’t an easy one. The reporter only knew the designer’s first name as well as the fact that she had worked for the Sweetheart Cup Company, which was later bought by Solo Cup Company. He eventually found a tweet from a person claiming to be the creator’s daughter, according to his article. After looking through public records and coming across Ekiss’ name and address, Gounley drove to her house and confirmed his suspicions.

Turns out, Ekiss had created Jazz as part of an internal cup design contest at the Sweetheart Cup Company in 1989, after outside design firms had came up with unsatisfying results. Ekiss said that Jazz was among three or four different designs she had submitted, and its colors are just ones she felt meshed well.

“I just did turquoise, or teal, because that’s one of my favorite colors,” she told ABC News. “I wanted another overlapping color that would work well together. I just liked the purple with it and everybody seemed pleased with that.”

The 50-year-old still keeps a few products with the Jazz design in her house, and says it’s “insane” that her artwork has become such a memorable part of ’90s culture.

Phew! We can all breathe easy now that this pressing mystery’s finally been solved.

Christian Siriano

With the recent runaway success of its I’m No Angel campaign, Lane Bryant has the fashion industry buzzing. And the plus-size retailer is hoping to keep that momentum going through next year, with today’s announcement that Christian Siriano will become its newest guest designer.

The Project Runway alum, known for his curve-hugging red carpet gowns, will launch a capsule collection for the specialty retailer, which will bow in spring 2016. Siriano joins the ranks of Bryant’s former designer collaborators such as Isabel Toledo, Sophie Theallet, and Lela Rose.

“Fashion should never be defined by size,” Siriano said in a statement about the collection, which will range in size from 14 to 28. “Regardless if it’s for red carpet or a day at the office, every woman should feel stylish and comfortable in their clothes. I’m excited about this partnership with Lane Bryant because it allows me the opportunity to showcase my designs on the everyday woman and allow them the opportunity to feel as beautiful and fashionable as possible.”

To fête the upcoming collab, the brands cohosted a small dinner in New York City for tastemakers including Poppy Delevingne, spotted below working on personalizing her own piece with Borgo.

FABRICATIONS: Meet Queer Fashion Designer And Artist Ben Copperwheat

This is the twelfth installment in a miniseries titled “FABRICATIONS” that elevates the work of up-and-coming queer individuals working in the fashion world. Check back at HuffPost Gay Voices regularly to learn more about some of the designers of tomorrow and the way their work in fashion intersects with their queer identity.

Originally hailing from the United Kingdom, Ben Copperwheat is a queer fashion designer and artist living and working in New York City. His clothing is heavily informed by both his background in screen printing and his work throughout a variety of facets of the fashion industry, and his designs have appeared on the likes of Boy George, Liza Minnelli and Pat Cleveland. Read the interview below to learn more.

The Huffington Post: What has your journey as a queer artist and fashion designer entailed?
Ben Copperwheat: I was born in Luton, England, 30 miles north of London and lived the first 28 years of my life in the United Kingdom. I had an interest in art at a very young age and drew pictures of Disney characters in my childhood and Madonna in my teens while listening to the pop music my mum would play. At 18 I enrolled in the local art college and, with the nurturing of wonderful tutors, I went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts at Bath Spa University. My aspirations led me to London and the Royal College Of Art of which I graduated with an MA in Printed Textiles in 2001. This jumpstarted my career and since then my journey has been a wondrous ride of exploration and growth.

After graduating I taught textiles for fashion at Northumbria University in England. This was great as I enjoy working with students, but it also enabled me to pursue print design projects with a variety of different people and companies. After two years working in London I felt ready for a big change. It doesn’t get much bigger than New York City! I had visited New York twice before and had fallen in love with its fizzy energy and sky-high possibilities. My cousin was already living in NYC, so this made the transition easier.

Upon arrival in 2003 I applied for jobs, and almost immediately I was offered a position as a print designer at Calvin Klein Jeans. I worked at CKJ for five years and I had a great time. I learned a huge amount about the fashion industry, met some lifelong friends and travelled the world to cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Paris, London, Barcelona, Dehli and Jaipur, shopping for inspiration. During my time at CKJ I also designed print collections for Stephen Burrows, Sue Stemp and Peter Som. In 2008 I desired more freedom so I left my job and transitioned to a freelance print designer.

In 2009, in partnership with my cousin Lee Copperwheat, came the formation of the clothing label COPPERWHEAT. We produced five seasons for New York Fashion Week in a variety of venues including Soho Grand Hotel, the Maritime Hotel and Cappellini store in SoHo. This was a huge learning curve, a tumultuous ride, the outcome of which was some beautifully made, very cool clothes. Ultimately, this label and partnership was not meant to be. In 2012 we went our separate ways, at which point I threw my creative energy into what I know best: screen printing. This juncture felt like a new beginning, and came with it a freedom of expression more vibrant and unrestrained than I had previously experienced. With a print area built into my duplex apartment in Bushwick, I went for leather and printed clothing, wallpaper and interior fabrics. I started selling pieces in Patricia Field’s store on the Bowery and producing commissioned outfits for clients.

Where have your designs appeared?
Through my work with Stephen Burrows, my prints have adorned the bodies of Liza Minnelli, Pat Cleveland, Gail O’Neill, Alva Chinn, Anna Cleveland and Lily Cole. With the label COPPERWHEAT we were featured in Dazed, Surface Magazine, Vogue Italia, Style.com, collaborated with Palladium Boots, Singer Miguel and Bruno Mars. For my own brand, Ben Copperwheat, my prints have been worn by NBA star Russell Westbrook, commissioned for Will Sheridan, Rod Thomas of Bright Light Bright Light and, most recently, I designed the stage outfit for the Boy George/Culture Club reunion tour and merchandise T-Shirts. Boy George debuted this outfit on “American Idol” in March 2015.

What does it mean to you to be a queer designer? How does your queer identity intersect with your work?
Queer has always been a tough word for me to embrace, as growing up in England I was bullied for my sexuality from as early as I can remember to the age of 8. Queer was one of the words I was called, along with “bent” and “puffter.” I feel, as time goes on, the word “queer” is becoming more of a friend. So, therefore, to be a queer designer, living in New York City is a gift. I feel incredibly grateful to have the freedom to express myself through my clothing, art and interactions in such a vibrant culture — especially when there is so much oppression and suffering throughout the world. I have been openly gay/queer for over 20 years, so my queer identity is without a doubt synonymous with my work. Bright color and graphic pattern are predominant features in my designs, which is not the norm in current fashion and art. I feel “queer” represents that which is not the norm.

Who does Ben Copperwheat design for? Who is your audience and how do your designs cater to them?
I design for anyone who is looking for something different and visually exciting. My designs are a cross between artistic streetwear and high-end fashion. Whomever wears them brings their own personality and dimension to the prints. I have fans and clients of all ages and backgrounds. I wear my designs daily as I find this to be the most comfortable form of self-expression and I am regularly stopped on the street by a cross-section of admirers. I am inspired by the world around me — in particular New York City — and I feel my work reflects this.

Historically the fashion world has been extremely queer friendly — what role do you think the fashion world has played within mainstream acceptance of LGBT identity?
I feel it definitely has played a part in mainstream acceptance, especially Vivienne Westwood, with her embracement of all things queer. Also, other designers in tandem with popular music, specifically artists such as Madonna working with Jean Paul Gaultier, Lady Gaga with Alexander McQueen, Pet Shop Boys with Jeffrey Bryant to name a few. On the other hand, designers such as Dolce & Gabanna and Giorgio Armani are trying to turn the clock back with recent comments. Such is the push and pull nature of progress.

ben

What does the future hold for Ben Copperwheat?
With 15 years working as a designer and turning 40 this coming September, I feel that I am only just starting to realize my full creative potential. To be an artist/designer is a lifelong vocation, so with, I hope, at least another 40 years left on this planet I have many great things to come. I am currently in a group show curated by my friend Walt Cessna, “#INTERFACE Queer Artists Forming Communities Through Social Media” at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York. I am also planning work for a solo art show in NYC. I would like to show solo again at NYFW when the time feels right — branch out more into interiors (wallpaper/murals/fabrics). I am turning my apartment into a “museum” of my work, where every surface is printed/painted. Design costume and sets for theater. Get back to painting — I started out as a painter while at art school. Continue to nurture relationships with recording artists and performers and design more stage outfits. My ethos is that prints can be applied to anything. The nature of my work is very versatile, and I intend to continue to evolve in this way.
