See Kate Middleton in Princess Diana’s Favorite Tiara for the Queen’s State Banquet

It’s tiara time!

Kate Middleton sparkled in jewels as she headed to a state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening. Kate and Prince William left Kensington Palace for the dazzling occasion, which was just a short drive away.

Kate, who wore a blue Alexander McQueen gown, was pictured being driven into the palace wearing the Lover’s Knot tiara. Sometimes referred to as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, it is one of the best-known tiaras in the British royal family’s collection, mostly thanks to it being a favorite of the late Princess Diana. Her classic updo showed off her pearl drop earrings, which also belonged to Diana.

A little more than century old, the Lover’s Knot tiara has gotten a lot of use by Kate, who has worn it on several royal occasions. The royal mom of three also wore another glittering piece from the monarch’s collection: Queen Alexandra’s wedding necklace, which was a favorite of the Queen Mother’s. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales – son of Queen Victoria – gave the pearl and diamond stunner to his bride, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, as a gift for their wedding in 1863.

Kate was also wearing the royal family order just below her left shoulder — a personal gift from the Queen to female members of the royal family. She first wore it at the diplomatic reception before Christmas, but it likely wasn’t seen as just car shots were taken publicly. The order takes the form of a picture of the Queen — and in Kate’s case it is on glass. Previously, they have been made with ivory, but in keeping with William and Kate’s shared hope to halt the use of wild animal parts, Kate’s was made with glass.

The royals hosted King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands at the end of the first day of their official state visit.

Kate was seated between one of the Dutch King’s aides, Rear-Admiral Ludger Brummelaar and Lord Fowler, the Speaker Of the House of Lords. Six seats to the right of the Queen sat Prince William — whose neighbors at the table were Prime Minister Theresa May and the head of the Dutch royal household Jan Versteeg. Prince Charles sat next to his mother and Queen Maxima.

In a speech, King Willem-Alexander called Queen Elizabeth the “most fearless Bond girl” who has “great panache.” The Dutch king’s comment was a light-hearted reference to the landmark moment when Elizabeth (and her corgis!) joined Daniel Craig to film a fun opener for the London Olympics in 2012.

“The world looks to you as a trusted beacon in the midst of upheaval,” he said. “Your ability to keep in touch with the times is striking. You even have an adventurous streak, as you showed six years ago at the opening of the Olympic Games. In front of millions of viewers you played the role of the most fearless Bond Girl ever – with great panache!”

“Our countries are North Sea neighbors. The sea has made us natural allies; both outward-looking, both curious as to what lies beyond the horizon.”

William and Kate, who attended her first state banquet alongside the Queen in 2015 when Chinese President Xi Jinping came to London, are becoming regular fixtures on the list of royals welcoming heads of state.

Last year, Kate and William joined the senior royals at the dinner for the Spanish king and queen. (That night was also Prince Harry’s first official state banquet appearance in support of his grandmother the Queen.)

The Dutch royals were welcomed to London by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall before Queen Elizabeth, 92, joined them at the ceremonial meeting on Horse Guard’s Parade.

The dinner at the palace was for around 170 guests. The extensive planning for a state banquet starts about six months before the big event, with invitations sent out two months ahead.

A special “silver pantry” provides the silver-gilt plates used for the first two courses, fish and meat. (Pudding and seasonal fruit are served on porcelain.) The design on the cutlery that comes with it, collected by George IV “doesn’t always match,” said Anna Reynolds, the curator of the 2015 Buckingham Palace exhibit that focused on state banquets and other royal events.

Each person gets 18 inches of space, with the napkin folded in the shape of a Dutch bonnet.

Six glasses are set: one each for water, champagne, white wine, red wine, sweet wine or another champagne for post-dinner and port. “Each glass is the same distance from the edge of the table in each setting. That uniformity really helps to create the magic, what makes it so special,” Reynolds said.

Meghan Markle Joins Prince Harry at Polo Match on Princess Diana’s Birthday

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry returned to the Audi Polo Challenge on what would have been Princess Diana’s 57th birthday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at the annual charity event on Sunday together.

Meghan, 36, opted for a casual white button-down shirt and a pair of form-fitting black capri pants, which she accessorized with a pair of black flats, sunglasses and what appears to be the same Madewell x Biltmore panama hat that she wore to the event on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Harry was seen arriving in a white polo shirt with stripes on the side, which he paired with white pants and boots.

Meghan also attended the event on Saturday, as she cheered on Harry and his brother Prince William while the royal brothers took to the field at the Coworth Park Polo Club. William was not seen arriving at the event on Sunday.

The Audi Polo Challenge likely holds a special place in Meghan and Harry’s hearts: Their appearance at the game last year was the first time the couple attended a public event together, and they marked the milestone with a kiss.

Also present was actor Eddie Redmayne, who attended Eton College in the early 2000s with William. In addition to playing on the same rugby team, they were also honored as members of the elite group of seniors tasked with exercising discipline at the school.

In a sweet nod to Diana, Meghan and Harry found many ways to honor her legacy during their May wedding.

During the ceremony, Meghan’s wedding bouquet, which featured flowers Harry picked himself from their private garden at Kensington Palace, included Diana’s favorite flowers: Forget-Me-Nots.

The Duke and Duchess also included another one of Diana’s favorite flowers — white garden roses — in a unique floral display in St. George’s Chapel.

Later on the special day, Meghan was seen wearing Diana’s aquamarine ring on her right hand while she and her husband were seen leaving for their wedding reception.

Diana famously wore the emerald cut Aquamarine stunner to an auction of her own clothes at Christie’s in 1997.

In one sweet last nod to Harry’s later mother, the couple included a special detail in one of their wedding photos!

In an image released by the palace, while Meghan sits on the floor of the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, Harry sits on an emerald green couch. It was the same couch on which Harry’s late mother was photographed sitting while holding a baby Harry at his christening in 1984.

Diana sat next to Queen Elizabeth while Prince Charles rested on the antique furniture’s arm next to her. In the middle of the photo was a young William in a white polo shirt and baby blue shorts as he grinned off-camera.

See Camilla’s New Birthday Portrait – by One of Princess Diana’s Favorite Photographers

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall turns 70 on Monday — and she is being celebrated with an official new portrait.

The image was taken by famed photographer Mario Testino, who famously captured Princess Diana in her last official photo shoot. (Those photos are currently on exhibit at Diana’s childhood home, Althorp.)

In the new photograph, Camilla — in a navy blue dress coat by designer Fiona Clare – poses with husband Prince Charles in the Morning Room at Clarence House, their London residence.

It’s the second time Testino has publicly photographed Camilla. In a statement, the photographer said he was “honored” to capture the couple “on this very important date,” noting that after he first photographed her in 2006 he “discovered a kind and beautiful person with a wonderful sense of humor. Doing this latest assignment to celebrate Her Royal Highness’s 70th birthday is a true honor.”

Camilla turns 70 on Monday, but has already been the guest of honor at a party at home at Highgrove house, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire on Saturday evening.

In fact, she has been doing a lot of merry-making of late: Last week birthday wishes were displayed on a red London bus as she hosted a party for schoolchildren to promote a literacy campaign. On Thursday, she and Charles welcomed charity friends to mark Camilla’s contribution to the world of royal duty — something she didn’t start until marrying Charles in 2005 at age 57.

She is also the subject of a semi-authorized new biography by author Penny Junor, The Duchess, in which those close to her tell her side of the story in detail for the first time.

“Clearly when people meet her she has that je ne sais quo,” a source in royal circles told PEOPLE last month. “She does have that magic spell that draws people in.” Adds Christopher Wilson, author of the 1994 biography A Greater Love: “What she had was chutzpah.”

Junor’s book also brought back stories about the affair that rocked the British royal family just as friends and family of the late Princess Diana are set to mark the 20th anniversary of her death in August.

Princess Diana’s Versace Dress Sold at Auction for $200,000

A famous, icy blue Atelier Versace dress Princess Diana wore on a magazine cover just hit the auction block and went for a lot more than experts had predicted. The final sale price? A whooping $ 200,000, more than double the estimated range of $ 60,000 to $ 80,000.

The dress was sold by Julien’s Auctions after being held in Versace’s archives on a hanger labeled “Lady Diana.” Online bidding was facilitated by Invaluable.

Diana was photographed in the dress by Patrick Demarchelier in 1991, though the image was used on the cover of a 1997 tribute edition of Harper’s Bazaar. It is thought to be the first dress designer Gianni Versace did for the princess.
