Golfer and SI Swim Model Paige Spiranac ‘Didn’t Want to Live Anymore’ After Cyberbullying

On the eve of one of the biggest tournaments in golfer Paige Spiranac’s career, she was sobbing on the floor of a hotel room after dealing with cyberbullying.

Spiranac, then 22, had been called the “hottest golfer on the planet,” and because she got an invite to the tournament to bring recognition to the event, not based on her skill, people said she wasn’t good enough to play, and that she was only sexualizing the game.

“It really affected me,” Spiranac told Sports Illustrated. “I was sitting in the bathroom just balling and was like ‘I don’t want to go through this pain, this feel of helplessness. Being alone. Scared.’ And I said I never wanted anyone to feel the way I felt in that moment. How scared I was. How helpless I felt in that I was bullied so bad to the point that I didn’t want to live anymore.”

And this wasn’t the first time she experienced bullying. As a child, Spiranac had a condition that made her hair fall out, and classmates said she looked like a boy.

“I had a lot of health issues growing up,” she said. “On top of the hair condition, I had asthma and bad social anxiety. I was one weird little kid. So I know how it feels to be an outsider, how it feels to be bullied, to have no friends, to be that person no one wanted around.”

Now 24 and in the 2018 SI Swim issue, Spiranac hopes to use this stage to spread awareness about cyberbullying, and her work with the non-profit Cybersmile.

“People of all walks of life are cyberbullied every single day and that’s not okay,” she said. “It’s time we start supporting the victims instead of telling them to delete social media or ignore the hate. It’s time we made a difference, so I’ve dedicated a significant portion of my time to helping others.”

Spiranac knows, though, that posing in just a Wonder Woman-inspired chest plate could open her up to more criticism. But she’s ready for it.

“Even though being in the SI Swimsuit Issue has always been a dream of mine it would be a lie to say that I didn’t think about what the response might be,” she said. “I mean I wear leggings and people say that the way I’m dressed is inappropriate! But in the end, it’s not the opinions of other people that matter — it’s if you’re doing things that make you feel happy, fulfilled, and empowered. You can’t let negativity hold you back from living your life!”

We Tried It: Finding a Facial That Didn’t Make My Sensitive Skin Go Insane

Who Tried It: Lauren Lieberman, Senior Photo Editor

Why She Tried It: I have been putting off getting a facial for months because I always leave red and splotchy and I usually look like I have chicken pox for a week after. But after a summer of sun and lots of sunscreen, my pores were in serious need of some de-clogging. So began my search for a reputable place that wouldn’t be too expensive, but a few steps above the corner nail salon. After about an hour of googling and reading spa reviews, I came across the medical spa section of Sadick Dermatology.

I was surprised at the array of options on their menu of services (the phrase “medical cleanse” sounded promising), and the prices weren’t too bad either. After further research, I discovered that their very own aesthetician, Luzinete Ripardo, works on models right before they hit the runway. This shocked me! Like I said, my face is usually a disaster for days after a facial let alone a few hours. Being a Photo Editor for the Style section of People.com, I have been looking at up-close photos of models on the runway for the last few weeks now- could it be possible that they actually get facials right before runway shows? They have picture-perfect, blemish-free, porcelain skin! Plus the idea of going to the doctors office instead of a spa intrigued me, as I am wary of letting aestheticians who don’t have the proper training near my sensitive skin. So I decided to see if this miracle worker really exists, and called to book myself a facial.

After being thoroughly reassured by the receptionist that Luzinete does indeed work on models right before shows and photo shoots, I decided on the hour-long “Solution” facial, that promised to extract impurities from my acne-prone skin for $ 175. What I was especially excited about: the “hour-long” aspect. Cutting out all the frills of traditional facials that take up hours of your day was right up my alley – I’m always anxious to get the show on the road after just a few minutes.

Level Of Difficulty: 2/10. Upon meeting Luzinete I was immediately put at ease. She is an adorable Brazilian woman with a warm smile and amazing skin so I figured I had to be in good hands. She inspected my skin, agreed I had lots of clogged pores and milia (small skin-colored bumps that develop when skin flakes become trapped under the surface of the skin, that I cannot get rid of no matter what I do) and promised to take good care of me. When I told her my concerns and previous facial horror stories she was appalled and assured me that nobody has ever left her with scabs or bruises.

She first took my makeup off using a mild cleanser, then she turned on the steamer and let me relax for about 10 minutes to loosen up my pores. Next came the dreaded “medical extraction,” which was the part I was super nervous about, considering many aestheticians use lancets (small, sharp surgical needles) to open the pore, which can cause scarring if not done correctly. But Luzinete assured me she uses a very tiny, medical-grade surgical needle that can barely be felt. I woudln’t go that far, but it was much better than I was expecting. Then she used a gentle scrub to slough away dead skin cells. This was followed by a high-frequency light machine that is meant to close pores, minimize redness, and kill bacteria to control future breakouts. Last was a purifying and cooling mask to calm and hydrate the skin, and before I knew it the hour was up!

The verdict: Even though Luzinete kept assuring me that I was not red every time I asked her (which was about every 10 minutes throughout the whole hour), I still could not believe my eyes when I looked in the mirror. I didn’t see the usual red welts that pop up on my skin after poking at it myself, or the red scabby chicken pox-looking marks that I usually leave a facial with. I had an amazing glow and super smooth looking skin. Usually I have to hide my face and run right home after a facial, but not after this! I went to the grocery store and stopped to chat with my doorman for a bit without feeling self conscious at all.

Okay, I thought – this is all great now, but the true test is how badly I break out in the next couple days. I woke up the next few days increasingly amazed at how I still did not see any redness or bumps at all! My skin was still glowing and so smooth, I barely needed any makeup at all.

Overall, I could not have been happier with the whole experience. From the friendliness and professionalism of Luz, the quick yet thorough service (also the fact that she did not try to sell me a million products!) and of course the amazing results- I will definitely be returning. If you are like me and have sensitive skin but in serious need of a facial, I highly recommend letting Luzinete work her magic on you!

Ludacris Sure Had The Last Laugh Over Bill O’Reilly And Pepsi, Didn’t He?

Back in 2002, Bill O’Reilly asked his viewers to boycott Pepsi because the company was working with the hip-hop artist Ludacris.

“I’m calling for all responsible Americans to fight back and punish Pepsi for using a man who degrades women, who encourages substance abuse, and does all the things that hurt particularly the poor in our society,” the Fox News host said on “The O’Reilly Factor.”

It worked. Soon after O’Reilly’s call to arms, Pepsi pulled all of its ads featuring Ludacris and stopped working with him entirely ― for what reason is still difficult to discern.

Flash forward 15 years, and the situation not only seems particularly ridiculous, but just drips with irony.

The beverage company recently found itself embroiled in yet another ad-related controversy. This time, however, the ad was actually offensive, making light of political protests depicting Kendall Jenner walking through a protest to deliver a can of Pepsi to a police officer and receive cheers all around. On April 5, Pepsi pulled the ad and apologized.

Just days earlier, on April 1, The New York Times published an investigation that found it was, in fact, O’Reilly who had been degrading women, not Ludacris. All told, Fox News and O’Reilly had paid out $ 13 million to five women because of his allegedly inappropriate behavior toward them, The Times found.

The revelation would lead to calls for O’Reilly’s ouster at Fox News. Asked about the controversy a little over a week later, Ludacris only said that he hoped O’Reilly could learn from the controversy.

“It’s not my place to judge Bill O’Reilly the same way he judged me,” he said during an appearance on radio show “The Breakfast Club.” “I’m thriving in life right now. All I can do is hope that Bill O’Reilly settles these issues and learns from whatever mistakes he may have made ― and also thrives.”

“But,” he added, “it is definitely ironic that Pepsi and Bill O’Reilly are under fire right now.”

O’Reilly was never able to settle his issues. On Wednesday, Fox News announced that “The O’Reilly Factor” host would not return to the network as a result of his treatment of women, leaving him with all the time in the world to go catch the No. 1 movie in America right now: “The Fate of the Furious,” featuring who else but Ludacris.

Ludacris appeared to subtly address the news Wednesday, just 30 minutes after it came out that O’Reilly was gone.

Now, I ask you: If that’s not a cherry on top, what is?

RHONY Feuding Got So Bitter the Ladies Didn’t Talk for ‘a Month’ — and One Star Nearly Quit

The Real Housewives of New York are about to take another bite out of the Big Apple — but not without a little hesitation.

Dorinda Medley tells PEOPLE Now that she was hesitant to return for season 9 of the series after facing accusations of drug use from her cast mates.

“I think the whole season hampered a lot of us from coming back to the show,” admits Medley. “I don’t think it was just one thing. I kind of left the show last year feeling like it was quite dark.”

“It’s one thing when you have the controversy and then you have the resolution and you have all those whacky moments,” she explains. “But, it was dark.”

During the season 8 reunion, Sonja Morgan and Bethenny Frankel accused Medley of using cocaine. “Everybody knows you do drugs,” charged Morgan.

In response, Medley said, “I don’t do drugs. How would I do all these drugs when lives with me? I’m home every night.”

FROM COINAGE: The True Cost of Famous TV Apartments

“Usually after the reunion, everyone goes to dinner and they have a great time. Everybody just like slithered out of there, we didn’t even speak to each other for a month,” Medley explains of the aftermath.

RELATED VIDEO: RHONY‘s Dorinda Medley on the Other Housewives Causing Drama With Luann and Tom

In general, Medley says of her fellow RHONY costars, “I think women need to really support other women and I think they need to at some point stay out of your business.”

The Real Housewives of New York City season 9 premieres Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

My Mom Gave Me The Best Wedding Gift Of All, And It Didn’t Cost A Dime

There’s a piece of advice my mom gave me before my wedding ― long before I was engaged, even. I’ve passed the wisdom on to other friends who married both before and after me.

It goes like this: Before each big moment ― walking down the aisle, being introduced as a married couple for the first time, toasting the marriage during speeches ― take a mental picture in your head. Use your eyes to mimic the flash of a camera shutter. Blink, we’re doing our first dance. Blink, we’re feeding each other wedding cake.

My mom says she used this trick ― really an exercise in mindfulness, long before it became a buzzword ― at her own wedding over 30 years ago and remembers the day with great clarity. She recalls seeing my dad at the end of the aisle as she entered the synagogue with her mother, my father stepping on the glass as is custom at Jewish weddings while the guests yelled “Mazel Tov!” She remembers being introduced for the first time as Mr. and Mrs., cutting the cake and asking my dad not to smush it all over her face (he put a dollop on her cheek instead). She talks about taking portraits before the ceremony at the Bel Air Hotel and retreating there at the end of the night; my husband and I chose to do the same to capture a bit of their wedding magic on our own big day.

But it’s really her advice that brought the magic. Sure, the wedding was only seven months ago, but I remember it in vivid detail ― it didn’t pass by in a whoosh like other friends and colleagues described. The night goes by fast, but making a conscious effort to be in the moment helped me memorialize both the big and little moments that made the day so special: walking down the steps of our high school where my husband and I first met to snap some photos by our lockers. Seeing our reception space for the first time, taking in all the beauty and hard work that made it happen. Singing softly to each other as we did our first dance. Feeling immensely loved by all our family and friends who had counted down as eagerly to the wedding as we had; my mom actually recalls the same of her big day.

Below, I’ve shared photos of some of the treasured moments I took snapshots of in my head. But my takeaway is this: Don’t let the day pass you by. Do whatever you can to be present and in the moment ― even if it requires a few extra blinks here and there.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn’t put you on a set path, it doesn’t hold your hand, and we love it for that. Nintendo had to conduct a lot of experiments in order to make a dynamic, open world game like it.  We recently sat down with game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, technical director Takuhiro Dohta, and art director Satoru Takizawa to learn more about the process of creating one of the boldest entries in Nintendo’s lauded Zelda series.

Different teams take a variety of approaches when making prototypes at Nintendo according to Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. “Even with the Zelda franchise, it’s different,” he said. “For example, Breath of the Wild started with less than 10 people.” Fujibayashi told us a small team can work on early ideas to make a game for roughly a year or possibly longer, and there isn’t a set time limit. The first phase is spent figuring out the game idea the team wants to make. Once the initial prototype is completed, the findings are presented to Nintendo’s senior staff. If it proves the ideas will work, the team begins staffing up.

So Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Didn’t Secretly Get Married After All

Cancel that order of weed brownies you had fast-tracked to celebrate Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s secret wedding, because apparently it never happened.

A representative for the pop star confirmed that Miley and her “Hunger Games” fiancé didn’t tie the knot this week amid speculation ignited by a photo posted by Billy Ray Cyrus

“[It was] just some great photos that happen to have been taken in a white dress,” Miley’s manager told Us Weekly in a statement.

Billy Ray confused everybody on Thursday after sharing a photo of his daughter beaming in white, writing that he was “so happy you are happy.” Naturally, fans put two and two together and assumed that Miley and Liam had finally tied the knot after their off-and-on-again engagement.

Billy Ray didn’t help matters when he began retweeting reactions to followers understandably shook by the news. He later clarified his social media strategy, backtracking his original post in surprise that somehow people would misconstrue his insanely cryptic tweets.

“Whoa!” he wrote. “Don’t jump the gun. Been at work #StillTheKing Glad to see so many love @MileyCyrus the same as I do.”

Stop playing with our achy breaky hearts, Billy Ray.

Kim Kardashian Gets Her Stretch Marks Removed: ‘It Didn’t Hurt That Badly’

Kim Kardashian West isn’t afraid to detail what goes into her amazing body, whether it’s intense workouts or a little help from cosmetic surgery.

The 36-year-old reality star took to Snapchat on Sunday to reveal that she had just visited cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Simon Ourian to get rid of some of her stretch marks.

Using a voice-changing filter on Snapchat that gave her cute bunny ears, Kardashian West told her fans that she was leaving the doctor’s office after they “worked on stretch marks.”

“I feel so excited that I finally did it,” she said.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star continued, “I’ve been so scared to do it thinking it hurts so badly, and it didn’t hurt that badly. So I’m so grateful, and I’m so excited. I love you Dr. Ourian!”

RELATED VIDEO: Exclusive: How Kim Kardashian Is Affecting Plastic Surgery Trends

This isn’t the first time the mother of two has taken her cosmetic surgeries to social media.

Just last week, she revealed that she had visited Dr. Ourian to get work done on her belly button.

“So I’m spending my Saturday with Dr. Ourian and it f—— kills but it will be worth it,” she explained at the time. “We are lasering. You guys, I never thought I could love someone and hate someone so much at the same time.”

“If anyone that’s had babies understand what it’s done to your belly button, then you really understand how much you need Dr. Ourian to tighten around your belly button so it could look back normal,” she added.

In August, Kardashian West documented a procedure with Dr. Ourian called “skin-tightening,” a way to get your stomach in shape without surgery, on Snapchat.

U.K. cosmetic surgery group Transform reports that they have seen a 73 percent increase in inquiries from patients citing Kardashian family members as inspiration.

The trend article calls the plastic surgery craze the “Dash Effect,” and states that after Kylie Jenner admitted to having lip fillers earlier this year, they received a 700 percent rise in inquiries about the procedure overnight.

David Bowie Didn’t Know Cancer Was Terminal Until Three Months Before Death

Days before the one-year anniversary of David Bowie’s death, a new documentary is shedding light on the singer’s final years before he lost an 18-month battle to liver cancer.

Directed by Francis Whately, “David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” airing on BBC Two Saturday, follows the rock icon on his 2003 A Reality Tour, as well as throughout the production of his last studio album, “Blackstar.”

According to Johan Renck, the director for the music video of the album’s final single, “Lazarus,” the 69-year-old rock icon discovered his cancer was terminal only three months before his death, while he was still working on the video.

According to the BBC, Renck explains in the documentary that he wasn’t made aware of Bowie’s diagnosis until after filming the video for “Lazarus,” which heavily features death and rebirth symbolism.

“I found out later that the week we were shooting is when he found out that it is over,” Renck said.

Despite the imagery that suggests Bowie was contemplating his own mortality through his music ― the video begins with the singer in a hospital bed with gauze covering his eyes ― the director denies that the music video had anything to do with his illness. The Guardian reports that Renck created the vision for “Lazarus” a week before learning of Bowie’s diagnosis.

“David said: ‘I just want to make it a simple performance video,’” Renck recalled. “I immediately said, ‘The song is called Lazarus, you should be in the bed.’ … To me it had to do with the biblical aspect of it … it had nothing to do with him being ill.”

Bowie kept his illness a secret from almost everyone around him in an effort to protect his family and continue work on his final album. According to the Guardian, the singer was making a sequel to “Lazarus” just weeks before his death.

“I don’t find it strange he kept his illness so private,” the documentary’s director, Francis Whately, told the Guardian. “He’d had his life picked over for 40 years and he thought he had said everything he wanted to say, there was nothing more.”

‘Sex And The City’ Creator Darren Starr Didn’t Want Carrie To End Up With Big

In another world, Carrie Bradshaw may not have had her happily ever after with Mr. Big.

Show creator Darren Starr revealed in a new Kindle Singles interview that he believes the show’s finale went against its central conceit.

“… if you’re empowering other people to write and produce your show, you can’t … say certain things,” Starr said.

“At a certain point, you’ve got to let them follow their vision. … But I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage,” he continued. “Not that they can’t. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That’s what had made women so attached.”

In other words, if Starr had been behind the wheel, we might have seen Carrie stomp off alone into the dust, pair of Manolos encasing her independent woman feet.

As it were, she got Big (Chris Noth), who, just last week, had a “Sex and the City” reunion with Carrie Bradshaw’s other love interest Aidan (John Corbett) at the Open Road Films’ Golden Globes party for “Spotlight.”

No word yet on if either one brought up that insane Carrie-Aidan kiss from “Sex and the City 2.”

On another note, there seems to have been a whole lot of “Sex and the City” press of late. Cue the conspiracy theories that the show is trying to have a Netflix reunion or something.

Gwen Stefani Wishes Her Divorce From Gavin Rossdale ‘Didn’t Happen’

Gwen Stefani opened up about her “unexpected” divorce from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale in yet another radio interview.

The “Used To Love You” singer was on “The Tommy Show” Wednesday morning and talked about her 13-year marriage, hinting at the cheating rumors that have been swirling around. Rossdale allegedly cheated with the family nanny for three years, according to Us Weekly.

“I feel like I go back and listen to a lot of that stuff, and I get sick,” said Stefani to the radio station. “You look at the song and you go ‘That was a red flag. That was a moment where I was feeling just as bad as I feel today and why did I keep it up?'”

Stefani and Rossdale filed for divorce in August after nearly 20 years of being together. They have three children, sons Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 1.

“I wish it didn’t happen, I wish that all of this wasn’t happening but at the same time, I feel like it was part of my life journey,” Stefani said on the radio show. “In my life I’ve had two really bad heartbreaks and I’ve written some incredible music out of it and I feel so lucky to have that and to be able to share it.”

Stefani has previously admitted that her new single, “Used To Love You,” was written during a time period when her life was crumbling.

“I had been writing because my life blew up,” the singer said during an interview with  KIIS FM’s JoJo Wright. ”Everybody knows that my life blew up last February. I’d just been dealing with that.”

Stefani has since moved on with fellow “Voice” coach and country singer, Blake Shelton.

Bella Hadid on Her Early Modeling Days: “If I Didn’t Book a Job, I Would Cry”

There was a time when the world just knew Bella Hadid as little sister to Gigi, but, my, how things have changed. The raven-haired beauty has joined her sister on the Tom Ford runway and in a steamy Balmain campaign, while also notching her own accomplishments (like a CR Fashion Book spread and Botkier campaign). And while the girls have their own fashion vibes going on, there are plenty of similarities, including a propensity for putting lots of pressure on themselves.

“I’ve always been really hard on myself. If I didn’t book a job, I would cry,” Bella told Editorialist, also admitting to being “so nervous in the beginning.” And sister Gigi also dealt with the same pressure: before she was linked to Victoria’s Secret Pink, she had spent time being bummed out over not booking the lingerie giant’s famous runway show.

Bella in Prabal Gurung at this year’s Tony Awards

According to Bella, her off-duty style has led some people to think of her as a black sheep who rebels and does drugs but, in reality, it’s the furthest from the truth. “I promise I’m a good girl. I never do drugs. I literally order sushi, watch Law & Order, and go to sleep at 9 o’clock every night. I’m a grandmother.”

Plus, that rebellious style? It’s actually a product of moving to New York City and her mother, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster.

“In L.A. I did a lot of vintage flea market dresses and Doc Martens. My mom was like, ‘You’re going to need to tone it down with those floral dresses when you go to New York.'”

bella-hadid-new-york-style

Bella’s standard New York style, on display from earlier this summer, involves a lot of black and ’90s staples (think crop tops, high-waisted jeans, and tiny round sunglasses). Still, the model hasn’t totally abandoned her original style. When she touches down on the West Coast, it’s back to breezy dresses and clunky boots, as evidenced by the outfit she chose for a Beverly Hills stroll with her dad last week.

Jennifer Aniston Didn’t Invite Half The Cast Of ‘Friends’ To Her Wedding

You’d think after working with someone on a hit TV show for 10 seasons, you’d probably invite them to your super secret wedding - especially if that TV series was called “Friends.”

Well, 11 years after the show ended, it looks like Jennifer Aniston isn’t quite as good of friends with some of her former castmates as others. Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer were all absent from the 46-year-old’s wedding to Justin Theroux last week, and that’s because they weren’t invited.

“I was surprised. I didn’t know about it,” Perry told “Entertainment Tonight” when asked about Aniston’s wedding at the CBS, CW and Showtime Summer TCA party on Monday, adding that he’s “very happy” for the couple.

Meanwhile, LeBlanc didn’t score an invite to the A-list event, which was held at the couple’s mansion in Bel Air, either, but he reasoned that it was likely because the wedding was “small.”

He only had good things to say about his former co-star, and seemed happy that Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow were there. “The girls were there. You’ve got to have the girls there,” LeBlanc told “Entertainment Tonight.”

Aniston and Theroux married last Wednesday in front of about 70 people, including Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen DeGeneres, Orlando Bloom, Chelsea Handler, Cox and Kudrow.

Rihanna’s Met Gala Dress Designer Didn’t Actually Want Her to Wear It

rihanna

Chinese couturier Guo Pei became an international fashion superstar the moment Rihanna took her first step on the Met Gala red carpet in May—but if the designer had her way, RiRi wouldn’t have worn it at all.

“I actually didn’t think the dress was the right one for her,” Guo told WWD. “I thought it would be too heavy and too hot, but she was so touched the moment she put it on.”

Bad-gal RiRi knows what works for her, though. The embroidered cape with fur trim and mile-long train was arguably the most photographed—and talked-about—dress of fashion’s biggest night. Pei revealed that the cape weighs 55 pounds and took nearly two years to make. Talk about conviction!

The 3 Biggest Things I Wish I Didn’t Stress Over in High School

High school: A place where you spend four vital years learning, making friends, and finding yourself. I went to Archbishop Molloy, a Marist high school in Queens, New York. I loved my high school, I made the best of friends that I’m still close with today, I had great teachers who I still reach out to for advice and I learned lessons not only that I used inside the classroom but throughout the rest of my life. I credit my high school for helping shape me to be the person who I am today.

However, even though I loved high school, I wouldn’t go back and do it again. Don’t get me wrong — I had a lot of great times and great memories, but there were also many days I spent stressing over the littlest things. I wish I could go back to myself at 14 and say, “A few years from now, none of the things that you spend time worrying about will matter.”

Boys. My sophomore year of high school I remember many nights of sitting in my room, upset and listening to Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen.” It seemed like having a boyfriend was the best thing in the world, and I was never a part of that exclusive “I have a boyfriend club.” I would see classmates having a boyfriend and I would think that having a boyfriend would magically make all my problems go away. Everyone was so happy in their relationships, that I felt like total loser for never having a boyfriend in high school. I can’t believe I spent so much time wondering if a boy had noticed me.

Growing up, I realized that I wasn’t going to find the love of my life in high school, and that having a boyfriend while I’m trying to focus on my grades would’ve just been a distraction. I also wasn’t ready for a mature relationship and the long-term relationship that I wanted wasn’t found in high school. The boys that I had crushes on totally aren’t my type anymore — it was just the idea of having a boyfriend that excited me. Don’t let the thought of having a boyfriend or a significant other take you away from things that really matter. Also, once you’re out of high school there are so many people out there who are waiting to meet you!

Fitting in. It doesn’t matter what people think about you, I repeat: It doesn’t matter what people think about you. I wanted every single person to like me, and only now do I realize, that’s impossible. No matter how nice you are or how much you try, there will always be someone who doesn’t like you. I cared so much about what other people thought about me, that I started losing who I was. I would shop at certain clothing stores because other girls in my grade were, or I’d want the latest technology because everyone else had it. It was when I started being honest with myself,2015-06-19-1434725827-2571197-183890_10150326746758939_2572568_n.jpg and showing people who I truly was that I started meeting people who liked me for who I was — and not who I was trying to be. And eight years later, they are still my best friends who I road trip to go see Taylor Swift in concert with. Be confident in the person that you are, and you’ll find people who like you for just being you.

Not getting picked for things. High school can be competitive, trying out for sports teams, leadership positions in clubs and comparing test scores. I remember that I didn’t get picked for a leadership position in high school that I desperately wanted and I was devastated. I thought, “What’s wrong with me? Why am I not good enough?” I would beat myself up over the fact that other people got this position and I didn’t.

That leadership position clearly wasn’t meant for me at that time. I was able to find another club in my high school that I absolutely loved, and if I had gotten the other position I wouldn’t have ever even considered joining it. You may not get the spot on the sports team or get the highest test score in your class, or get that leadership position. But the good thing about high school is that there are a lot of other clubs you can get involved in, and if not, you can always start your own. This is something that stayed with me throughout my life — that if I didn’t get something that I really wanted, I would just say it wasn’t meant for me and that something better is in store.

2015-06-19-1434725579-1108699-251271_10150274148328939_6122165_n.jpg When I was in middle school I always thought high school was going to be like my favorite television shows like One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach and Degrassi. But rest assure high school was nothing like what I saw on TV and that’s probably a good thing because the shows had a lot of drama.

Your high school experience is what you make of it. Meet as many people as you can, get involved and join a club, raise your hand and ask questions and most importantly, have fun. Your high school days are days that you will never be able to get back. It goes by pretty fast. One day you’re nervous walking into the first day of high school and the next you’re walking on stage to get your high school diploma.

Zoe Saldana On Nina Simone Criticism: ‘I Didn’t Think I Was Right For The Part’

The topic of race and casting in Hollywood resurfaced in the weeks since Entertainment Weekly published an essay by actor Michael B. Jordan on May 22.

In the essay, Jordan wrote about breaking down barriers with his role as the Human Torch, a character originally written as white with blue eyes and blond hair, in the forthcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

Jordan’s commentary prompted a response from actress Zoe Saldana, who supported the star’s thoughts in a Facebook post. In the post, Saldana posed a question to critics who were against Jordan playing the role.

If we question why Michael has been cast to play the Human Torch in Fantastic Four then we must also question why Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra, why Angelina Jolie played Mariane Pearl in a Mighty Heart, why Laurence Olivier played Othello, Burt Lancaster in Apache, and the list goes on….and on….

Saldana has faced similar criticism herself. In reaction to her casting as Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic “Nina,” some fans and critics suggested the actress was too light-skinned to portray the role.

The 36-year-old added to previous comments on the backlash this week in the July issue of InStyle magazine.

“I didn’t think I was right for the part, and I know a lot of people will agree, but then again, I don’t think Elizabeth Taylor was right for Cleopatra either,” she said in the interview. “An artist is colorless, genderless… It’s more complex than just ‘Oh, you chose the Halle Berry look-alike to play a dark, strikingly beautiful, iconic black woman.’ The truth is, they chose an artist who was willing to sacrifice herself. We needed to tell her story because she deserves it.”

For more of Zoe Saldana’s interview, check out the July 2015 issue of InStyle one it hits newsstands on June 15.

This Bride Didn’t Think Her Sick Dad Would Make It To Her Wedding. But He Did.

Andre Pearson never thought he would make it to his daughter’s wedding.

The 61-year-old arrived at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in March with heart and kidney failure, according to a press release from the hospital. At the time, doctors thought his condition was so bad that he only had one more year to live. He underwent surgery to repair his heart valve and dialysis treatments, which improved his health, but he was told he was still too sick to fly to his daughter Alexandra Price’s wedding. The plan was for him to watch the Palm Springs, California, ceremony Saturday on FaceTime.

But last week, Pearson’s medical team did a reevaluation and decided he was well enough to fly. They told him they were going to send him to the ceremony at Desert Ridge Estate in Indio so he could surprise his girl, according to local TV station KESQ.

“I really didn’t expect it. It came out of left field,” Pearson told The Huffington Post during a phone call Thursday. “I said, ‘No way this could be happening.’ The first thing I thought was Oprah coming out of the hallway. That would’ve been my next thought, that Oprah’s got a trip for me or something. But it was good.”

His surprise was only matched by his daughter’s, who burst into tears Friday when she opened the door of the house where she was staying and saw her father outside.

TK gifs

“Everybody was excited,” Pearson said. “Especially when I was rolled in the wheelchair into the house where she was at and she had no idea that it was coming, but it was all of a sudden tears everywhere. Tears of joy.”

Price was thrilled.

“I knew he wasn’t coming because I knew the circumstances and everything and I just feel shocked; it feels like a dream,” she told KESQ. “It was amazing since he wasn’t supposed to be here. It was just amazing to have him, sickness and all, here and it just made me feel really happy and whole and complete.”

Pearson, the brother of former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson, said his favorite part was getting to walk Price, who is his youngest daughter, down the aisle.

TK gifs

“I gave her away at the altar, that was very special, as well. Then I got a chance to go back to my seat and I started crying right there,” he said. Pearson also got a son that day, he said. “My wife and I never had any sons; we have all girls. I told [Price’s husband] that I just gained another son,” said Pearson, who has another son-in-law who lives in Texas. “Now I have two sons and I’m thankful for that. It’s wonderful that they’re the right guys and will take care of my girls, especially my youngest, my baby.”

After successful treatment at the Mayo Clinic, Pearson is now well enough to likely return home to Nebraska within the next month, according to the clinic’s press release.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’

As summer approaches, all we really want to do is what you did in years past. Or, you know, get Jennifer Love Hewitt to talk to us about her iconic role as Julie James in the 1997 slasher, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Here are some stories JLH told The Huffington Post about the horror flick:

1. The famous scene where Hewitt yells in the street was thought up by a fan who got to tell the actors what to do.

TK TK gifs

According to Hewitt, a fan who loved horror movies “got the chance to come to the set and choose a moment in that movie for somebody to do.”

Hewitt said that it was never supposed to be her line and she wasn’t supposed to do the iconic scene originally. In her recollection, the fan said, “I think that she should stand in the middle of the street and spin around and say, ‘What are you waiting for?'” When Hewitt was told about this scene she responded, “You want me to what?! How am I going to look like a normal person doing that?”

Now the moment is a “really sweet memory” for Hewitt and has a special place in her heart. “People don’t know that that was just like some kid who loved horror movies,” said Hewitt. “I’m glad I got to do that for him.”

2. Hewitt didn’t know that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar were going to end up together.

i know what you did last summer

Prinze and Gellar would eventually get married in 2002 — half a decade after the movie came out — but at the time of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Hewitt didn’t see the inklings of a lasting relationship just yet.

When asked about it, Hewitt laughed and said she was “just trying to make it through [her] first lead role” and wasn’t concentrating all too much on those two.

3. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was based on a book.

i know what you did last summer

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is based on a book with the same name. There was controversy at the time the movie came out as the original story wasn’t intended to be a slasher.

Hewitt eventually read the book, but “way after the movie.”

4. Hewitt was actually really scared while filming the movie and had trouble sleeping.

TK TK gifs

Hewitt said her young age contributed to this and explained a specific instance of terror involving the villain. “So, three o’clock in the morning, you’re running in fog in the middle of North Carolina from a guy that you barely know, with a hook on his hand,” Hewitt laughed. “You’re supposed to be scared out of your mind.”

The filming sometimes affected her sleep schedule as Hewitt explained, “There were definitely days where I went home and was like, ‘I’m supposed to be asleep now. I don’t think that that’s going to happen.'”

“There were definitely moments where it felt actually scary, but it was fun.”

5. Filming the escape scenes from the killer led to real bruising.

i know what you did last summer

“I was bruised a lot from falling and chasing and running,” Hewitt admitted.

Hewitt said that it was “a lot of hours” and “a lot of work,” but still thought the process was “just kids sort of playing around, but doing this really important big thing.”

All images from “I Know What You Did Last Summer” unless otherwise noted.

This interview took place as part of Hewitt’s promotional tour for Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula, which she has used throughout her current pregnancy.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Avengers’

The new “Avengers: Age of Ultron” could totally pick up Thor’s hammer if it wanted. It is predicted to eclipse $ 80 million in its second weekend, and it continues to run faster than Quicksilver on its way to $ 1 billion globally. In other words, this movie is worthy.

In addition to commercial success, the film has also had fairly positive reviews, but perhaps one knock is the lack of fan favorite villain Loki. That was the knock, anyway.

Recently, the Internet went wild after it was revealed that actor Tom Hiddleston did actually shoot some footage. It was just cut so the movie didn’t seem too cramped. The Loki news was a shocking revelation, but as it turns out, there are a lot of other facts fans might not know about the “Avengers” franchise:

1. There are strict rules so Quicksilver can appear in the “X-Men” and “Avengers” movies.

Image: Tumblr

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were originally the son and daughter of the “X-Men” character Magneto. Because “X-Men” owns the rights to the mutant storyline, the “Avengers” version has the characters receiving their powers from HYDRA experiments.

2. Chris Evans doesn’t eat his shawarma because he’s wearing facial prosthetics.

After Iron Man hilariously suggests grabbing some food upon saving the world in “Avengers,” the group is seen getting some chow. What you might’ve not noticed is Chris Evans doesn’t take a bite. Entertainment Weekly reports the actor hid his face and wore prosthetics to cover up a beard.

3. Godzilla is in the Marvel universe and has fought the Avengers before.

Image: Imgur

Godzilla’s opponents in Marvel comics have included the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor and the other Avengers. Also, as a side note, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play husband and wife in 2014’s “Godzilla.”

4. Marvel action figures are made with the actual graphics files from the movie for accuracy.

Image: Giphy

Hasbro designer Dwight Stall tells HuffPost Entertainment: “Once Iron Man is created in the new film, once Hulkbuster is created, they send the working files, which we share with our sculpting partners, and together we decide how we want to cut the articulation into the forms … You can’t get a more accurate representation in a toy than that.”

5. Toy releases also hint at the major storylines.

Hasbro’s Adam Biehl tells HuffPost that Marvel tries to let kids reenact major scenes from the film. This means designers work closely with filmmakers while the script is still being written to find things like “what the key beats are, who are the key characters, what are the key action scenes and what are the key costume changes.”

6. A huge Spider-Man crossover almost made it in the “Avengers” movies.

Image: IGN

The Oscorp building, which is well known in the world of Spider-Man, nearly made it into the “Avengers” films. It was reportedly scrapped because by the time it was fully designed, the “Avengers” version of Manhattan was already nearly finished.

7. Lou Ferrigno is still the voice of The Hulk.

Image: Tumblr

The actor who played the Hulk in the ’70s TV series told ComicBook.com that Marvel has a library of his “voices and growls” that they use on everything. He also revealed Hulk’s famous “puny god” line from the first “Avengers” movie was all him, too.

8. Tom Hiddleston was almost Thor instead of Loki.

Hiddleston’s screen test for the part can be seen on the “Thor: The Dark World” DVD extras. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor explains, “Every English-speaking actor over six foot was being seen for the part. I got down to the final five.” By the way, that final five also reportedly included Chris Hemsworth’s brother Liam.

In the end, it’s probably good Hiddleston missed out on the part. As the actor says …

Pregnancy Style Advice Your Mom Definitely Didn’t Hear, Courtesy of the Blogger Behind Pink Peonies

To me, there’s no greater test of true style than pregnancy. It’s when a woman either digs in and really embraces what she loves to wear or doesn’t, pulling on a whole lot of this-will-hide-the-bump options. Blogger Rach Parcell is the force behind Pink Peonies and is expecting her firstborn sometime soon. She’s also definitely one of those ladies who hasn’t let her new curves confuse her style.

“I thought I would wear a lot of flowy, loose tops with skinny jeans, but I quickly learned that a form-fitted silhouette that has some stretch to it is by far the most comfortable and flattering,” she told me about her approach to maternity dressing. “I feel the most confident in something that shows off my bump.” She did decide to invest in two pairs of classic maternity jeans and doesn’t regret the purchase, saying she’s planning on getting more mileage out of them with future pregnancies.

Her blog is filled with plenty of amazing outfits, but I’ll admit I was surprised by how many recent times I spotted her rocking heels. I’ve never gone through a pregnancy, so have no personal experience to speak of, but was under the impression that pumps become more uncomfortable (and feet can swell!).

“So many women warned me that my feet would grow one size larger and that I wouldn’t be able to wear heels at all while pregnant, but I haven’t experienced that” she told me. “If anything I like to wear them more now because they elongate my legs and help to balance out the bump.”

I Didn’t Keep My Promise

2015-03-09-1425928713-9032384-Milliesnowhat.JPG

Remember way back when I promised that I’d lie in my hammock for 10 minutes at least three times a week?

Well, I didn’t.

What do now — beat myself up? Say what a slacker I am, especially since I’m the “expert” on self-care and re-wiring our brains towards healthy habits?

Nah, that’s a sure waste of energy and of my brain cells. Better to get real and ask myself:
OK, what’s the situation now and what can I do and want to do about it?

Situation now: two feet of snow in the backyard and on the streets.
What do? Funny thing. Just got an e-note from my coach colleague Jean Stetz-Puchalski:
“The snow is so deep here I can’t even get out my driveway. But the light is gorgeous, so I decided to go out and make a snow angel.”

Great idea. I haven’t done one of those angels since I was a kid. I went out and did it.

Moral of the story?

Do what you can with what you’ve got. You know, lemons to lemonade.

As stress management researcher Jon Kabat-Zinn says,
You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

Translation for 2015 in Northeastern USA:
You can’t stop the snow, but you can flap your wings.

Thanks, Jean, for reminding me to “change my channel.
It took only a few seconds. Didn’t cost a cent. Gave me a true OASIS in the Overwhelm.
A super snowy thanks to you!

8 Things You Didn’t Know About The Super Bowl, Even If You Watch Every Year

Although you watch it every year, what do you really know about the Super Bowl?

This Sunday, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks are facing off in Super Bowl XLIX. The Super Bowl has a long history of memorable moments, and, with Marshawn Lynch’s Skittles and the Patriots (maybe) deflated balls alone, even more memorable moments are certainly bound to happen this weekend.

But before everything goes down this time around, here are eight things you can learn about the game and share at your viewing party … even if your favorite part is actually the commercials.

1. Someone has snuck into over 30 Super Bowls including the very first championship.

461728956

Dion Rich has gate-crashed many, many big events including the Oscars and Olympics, but he has snuck into the Super Bowl the most. In a 1993 Los Angeles Times profile, Rich explained his motives, “It was my hobby. The guys at home expected me to be on the tube or in the papers every year. I couldn’t let them down. I made it on TV or in some publication in 21 of the first 22 Super Bowls.” In the photo above, you can see rich even hoisting Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry after they won Super Bowl XII.

Unfortunately, security knows his face these days, checkpoints have increased since 2001, and Rich is no longer able to crash the Super Bowl. According to NY Daily News, his last successful attempt was the New Orleans Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002. Even in the ’90s, Rich told the Los Angeles Times:

After so many years it gets to be a real job. People see me on the sidelines all the time and think it’s easy. It’s not easy, it takes a lot of conniving and ingenuity and contacts. Every year they made it tougher … It just wasn’t that much fun anymore.

2. The first person to say, “I’m going to Disney World!” really didn’t want to do it at first.

71157527

USA Today’s For The Win caught up with former Giants quarterback Phil Simms in 2014 to talk about how this first Disney plug came together. Perhaps surprisingly, Simms didn’t have much interest in being a part of the campaign: “I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “I just thought that was wrong trying to do something like that.”

Simms was named MVP of Super Bowl XXI in 1987 and he remembered just being happy about winning the game when the cameras caught him to do the commercial. “Of course I’m smiling because we won, and the other reason is because I can’t believe I’m doing this,” Simms told For The Win.

For his role in the commercial, Simms was paid $ 50,000 and Disney did in fact send his family to Disney World.

In 2008, SF Gate profiled Mark Allan, the camera person who typically rushes on to the field to get the line from the Super Bowl winner, including the first one with Simms. Apparently the person in the commercial has to repeat the line a few times and says both Disney Land and World so the commercial can be targeted to each coast. While trying to capture the players, Simms basically just keeps saying, “Look in the lens.”

3. Joe Montana once calmed his team down before a Super Bowl-winning drive by pointing to the stands and joking, “Isn’t that John Candy?”

77620418

It was the 1989 Super Bowl and Joe Montana’s San Francisco 49ers were trailing the Cincinnati Bengals with time running out. According to legend, the 49ers offense were understandably nervous as they had to trek down almost the entire field to score. As Rolling Stone recounted, Montana apparently knew the right words to say to his team to calm their nerves. In a huddle, Montana began pointing to the crowd, saying, “There, in the stands, standing near the exit ramp … Isn’t that John Candy?”

It hasn’t been confirmed whether John Candy was truly in the stands during that game, but, in any case, Montana led the offense 92 yards down the field to score a winning touchdown with just 34 seconds left on the clock.

4. Both “Little Giants” and “Space Jam” were created out of successful Super Bowl commercials.

466857949

Ad people Jim Ferguson and Bob Shallcross created a McDonald’s advertisement for the 1992 Super Bowl about pee wee football that ended up catching legendary director Steven Spielberg’s attention. In a 1994 Baltimore Sun article, it was said that Ferguson came into the office one day and was simply told to give Spielberg a call. Ferguson thought it was a practical joke at first, but ended up getting Spielberg on the line. Spielberg apparently said, “I want that commercial made into a movie. I want my ‘Home Alone.'”

In 1994, Ferguson also told the Chicago Tribune, “Ninety seconds and Steven Spielberg changed our lives,” referring to himself and his partner Shallcross. Both of them ended up working with Spielberg to develop “Little Giants.”

The Nike and MCI commercial “Hare Jordan” was another Super Bowl commercial that led to a movie. At the end of “Hare Jordan,” Bugs Bunny tells Michael Jordan, “This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!” This obviously ended up being the case as the two were together again for the movie “Space Jam.”

5. During the first Super Bowl, NBC accidentally missed the taping of a kickoff and so the whole play was reset for the cameras.

77764299

During Super Bowl I, in 1967, both NBC and CBS had television rights to the game since NBC had a deal with the AFL and CBS the NFL. The game was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs and would have to be partially reset at one point due to a screw up by NBC.

As Rolling Stone recounted, the problem happened when the game was coming back from half time and NBC was still televising an interview with comedian Bob Hope. NBC failed to switch to the game fast enough so it was decided that the kickoff Green Bay had just completed would be entirely redone.

Green Bay would end up winning the game and as mentioned before, Dion Rich’s gate crashing ways enabled him to see it all go down.

6. A star player missed the Super Bowl due to a cocaine binge the night before.

347119

The previously mentioned 1989 Super Bowl, in which Joe Montana apparently spotted John Candy in the crowd, had another notable aspect to it. Montana might not have even gotten the chance to make a comeback though if the Cincinnati Bengals offense had had all their players to begin with.

Stanley Wilson was a running back for the Bengals who had already had two strikes from the league for drug use. He had made it through this preceding season without a problem, getting tested multiple times a week. This self control unfortunately only lasted until the night before the Super Bowl as Wilson succumbed to what Rolling Stone described as a “crack-cocaine binge.”

A Cincinnati Enquirer article from 1999 looked into the night surrounding Wilson’s decision and detailed how it almost didn’t even happen. Wilson,on his way to a team meeting with other players, stopped and said, “I forgot my playbook. I’ll meet you guys downstairs.” Wilson headed back to the room and didn’t return.

As this was Wilson’s third strike, he was given a lifetime ban from playing in the NFL.

7. The Baltimore Ravens ended up winning the Super Bowl after referring to the game as “Festivus” the whole season instead.

459284751

Festivus might be for the rest of us, but, in 2001, the “Seinfeld”-created holiday was especially for the Baltimore Ravens.

As the book Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us details, the superstitious head coach of the Ravens, Brian Billick, forbade his team from referencing the Super Bowl and playoffs throughout that season. Since logistically this became a problem, offensive lineman Edwin Multialo proposed calling the big game “Festivus Maximus” instead. The term stuck and then the Ravens went on to win “Festivus Maximus” in what was probably one of the biggest celebrations of the holiday yet.

Later in 2001, The Baltimore Sun even referred to the event as “Festivus Ravenous!”

8. The referees that officiate the Super Bowl also get rings.

52286160

These referee rings aren’t quite the same as the rings that players get, but they’re certainly still a point of pride. Mike Pereira of Fox Sports explained in a 2014 article:

The Super Bowl ring. The officials get Super Bowl rings just like the players do. They aren’t as big as the players’ rings, but they are still valuable pieces of jewelry. These rings mean the world to the officials and they wear them with such pride.

The American Profile also wrote about Super Bowl referees in 2012 and had retired NFL referee Jim Tunney show them his three Super Bowl rings. Referee Gerald Austin was quoted in that article as saying these refs aren’t given much advance notice they’ll be officiating the Super Bowl. “They called me about 11 days before the Super Bowl XXIV,” said Austin.

BONUS: According to legend, the Super Bowl got its name from the “Super Ball” toy.

52286160

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has had a super ball (shown in the photo above) on display to commemorate Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt’s apparent coining of the game name after his children’s toy. According to Henry D. Fetter of The Atlantic, when Fetter was asked how he originally came up with the name, he said, “My own feeling is that it probably registered in my head because my daughter Sharron and my son Lamar Jr. had a children’s toy called a Super Ball and I probably interchanged the phonetics of “bowl” and “ball.”

But Fetter doesn’t believe that Hunt actually came up with the name. Going by Hunt’s account, by the time he said “Super Bowl,” the term was already starting to take off in newspapers to refer to the previously unnamed championship game. Fetter believes that there is no clear person to point to as the origin and instead the name was sort of collectively decided.

For what it’s worth, according to the Chiefs media page, Hunt is also credited with coming up using Roman numerals in the name and putting Coach Vince Lombardi’s name on the trophy.

Domhnall Gleeson Lost So Much Weight For ‘Unbroken’ His Contacts Didn’t Fit

Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” is the story of Olympic long-distance runner and Air Force bombardier Louis Zamperini, and his struggles to survive as a prisoner of war during the last stages of World War II. But before that happens, “Unbroken” is also about three men lost at sea. On May 27, 1943, Zamperini’s plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean leaving only a trio of survivors: Zamperini, Francis “Mac” McNamara and Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips, played respectively in the film by Jack O’Connell, Finn Wittrock and Domhnall Gleeson.

“It was a great experience. A tough one but a great one,” Gleeson said of the raft sequences in a recent interview with HuffPost Entertainment. The 31-year-old actor lost what he previously called a “sizable amount of weight” for the role.

“Toward the end, getting toward the dehydration phase, I had to wear these contact lenses, because their eyes were red,” Gleeson recalled. “My contact lenses stopped fitting my eyes, because I was so dehydrated and had lost so much weight that everything had changed. But we were still trying to screw them in there — and you were hungry and overworked and physically and mentally exhausted — so then it got to the place where it wasn’t much fun. Angie reminded me of it. I had forgotten totally. I’ve shut out some of the experience.”

Not that Gleeson thinks he had it too rough compared to what happened to Zamperini and Phillips, both of whom would survive for 47 days on the open ocean with nothing more than rain water and whatever fish they were able to catch as sustenance. (McNamara died on the raft after 33 days.)

“Every time you thought about complaining, you were like, ‘What the hell am I saying?'” Gleeson joked. “You had to suck it up.”

unbroken

Since playing Bill Weasley in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” Gleeson has put together a tremendous resume of varied film roles. This year alone, he featured in not just “Unbroken,” but also “Frank,” an indie rock comedy, and “Calvary,” in which he co-starred opposite his father, actor Brendan Gleeson. Coming in 2015 are the dramas “Ex Machina” and “Brooklyn” plus a little something called “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Gleeson’s role in “Episode VII” is of the top-secret variety, and while discussing plot details of director J.J. Abrams’ film are strictly forbidden, he was able to weigh in on the recent teaser trailer.

“It just made me very excited,” Gleeson said. “I felt like a kid again. I finished it with a big stupid smile plastered on my face. It was exactly the kind of feel that I was hoping the movie would have. If the movie feels the same way as the trailer, we’re going to be in good shape.”

But before heading to a galaxy far, far away, Gleeson will finish up work on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” with Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio in lead roles. It’s another difficult survival story about men pushed to their limits. “We’re pacing around the snowy mountains of Calgary, carrying packs and dead bodies,” Gleeson said. “It’s a pretty full-on movie, but it’s great.”

Having spent so much of the last year working on arduous projects like “Unbroken” and “The Revenant,” does Gleeson long for the days of “About Time,” the charming Richard Curtis romantic comedy that he led last year?

“I got to get Richard writing, man!” Gleeson said with a laugh. “That way I can go back to doing something full of joy, love and hope instead of suffering and trials and tribulations where I need a psychiatric evaluation after I’m done filming.”

“Unbroken” is out Christmas Day.

God Told David Oyelowo He Would Play Martin Luther King, But He Didn’t Stop There

David Oyelowo hasn’t been shy about discussing how God spoke to him in 2007 and said the actor would eventually play Martin Luther King Jr. in what would become “Selma.”

“The reason I’m talking about that is because I’m as shocked as anyone else may be that this British guy is playing Martin Luther King,” Oyelowo, who was born in England, said during a recent interview. “Certainly back then, in 2007, I had done none of the movies people have now seen me do now.”

At the time, Oyelowo — who has since starred in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “Jack Reacher,” “The Help” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” — was a relative unknown. But it was another obstacle separating him from King that proved more difficult to overcome: Stephen Frears. Back then, the director was attached to “Selma” and didn’t think Oyelowo was right for the part. In the ensuing seven years, however, Frears left and multiple directors nearly stepped into his place (including Spike Lee and Paul Haggis). In 2010, Lee Daniels came onboard and, after working with Oyelowo on”Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” cast the actor as King. The tumultuous development process didn’t end there: Daniels dropped out because of scheduling conflicts. That’s when Oyelowo suggested another former collaborator: Ava DuVernay, with whom Oyelowo had made the 2012 indie film “Middle of Nowhere.”

“There was so much faith that had to be employed that this thing was going to happen,” Oyelowo said. “Virtually every day between that moment [when God spoke] to me and now, I did everything I could to make this thing happen.”

Now that it has, Oyelowo has received the best reviews of his career for playing King. The performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, and it has Oyelowo in the middle of a crowded group of contenders vying for an Oscar nomination. “Selma,” meanwhile, stands as one of the year’s best films, a timely and insightful drama that says as much about Martin Luther King’s struggle to get equal voting rights in 1965 as it does about the Millions March in 2014.

Oyelowo spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about “Selma,” working with DuVernay and what it was like to meet King’s children.

You’ve talked about hearing a higher calling to play this role all the way back in 2007. Does that kind of connection with God extend through the production as well?
What I couldn’t have anticipated is how much I needed, to be perfectly frank, God’s help in the playing of it. Not least because this was a man of God. This was someone, if you’ve seen him giving those speeches, there is something flowing through him other than himself. He is flowing in his anointing. I needed that. I like to think of myself as a good actor, but Martin Luther King, I ain’t! If you’re going to go and shoot in Atlanta, in a historical church, with 500 people who are from Atlanta, you need a little help from above. So I definitely felt I had that.

Watch Oyelowo in an exclusive clip from “Selma”

During that seven year period from when you first read the script and now, was playing Dr. King something you thought about every day, or is that impossible?
The first thing I can say to you is that it’s very possible to think about playing Martin Luther King every single day for seven years. I’m living evidence of that. There is never going to be a time in your life as an actor where you’re going to go, “Oh yeah, I’m ready to play Dr. King now.” But between doing the work in quiet and then, the films that presented themselves to me, I prepared. Playing a Union solider in “Lincoln,” playing a preacher in “The Help,” playing a black fighter pilot in “Red Tails,” playing the son of a butler in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” who is in the Freedom Riders and becomes a Black Panther: these were all films in which I had to go study the history. Inevitably they were part of what informed playing Dr. King. Now, were they opportunities that were divinely presented to me or was I just continually drawn to that material because of what was going on in my head? That I can’t really say. But I do know that so many different aspects of my life went into what you see in the film. Plus, I was now the age Dr. King was when these things happened in his life. When I first read the script, I had two kids; when we shot it, I had four kids, like he did. There were so many things I matured into by the time I played the role.

Dr. King is, relatively speaking, a young man during the events of “Selma,” but he looks 10-15 years older than his actual age. How did you manage the physical transformation this role required?
Again, we’re back to the spiritual side of things. People like to talk about the weight gain and the voice, but that’s what we do as actors; that’s the first rung of what you need to do if you’re going to play someone like this. But it was the emotional and spiritual weight of what this man did and had to go through that was tough. At that stage in his life, to have spent 10 years under threat — and not only his life, but his kids’ lives, his wife’s life. Having all these people depend on him. Being a voice for the voiceless. Being someone who has seen people die because of this cause. And not just because racist people have killed them, but because he went to places where he tried to have racists act out in front of the cameras, and then people get hurt. In Selma, people died. That weighs on you. If you’re mentally placing yourself in that space, it does something to you physically. When I watch him, you can see there is a burden. You can see that he looks and feels older than he was. He was 36 at this stage. That is crazy. That had to be one of the things I tried to bring to it.

You recommended Ava to direct this film. Having worked with her on “Middle of Nowhere,” what surprised you about her transition to this kind of bigger material?
When we worked together on “Middle Of Nowhere” I saw her talent is undeniable. One of the privileges I’ve had in doing some of those films I mentioned is working with Steven Spielberg and other incredible directors. I was on the set with Ava, and she is just as good. I think the unique thing about her — and what she brought to “Selma” that was so incredible — was the ease with which she went into a film that was 100 times the budget of the last thing she had done. There were so many more people, so many more elements, it was much bigger in size, but she never panicked. She never shouted. She never threw a chair. She never compromised her vision. That went through the post-production side of things as well. To be a visionary, you have to be single minded. She has that without being, to be perfectly honest, an unpleasant person. That’s very rare! Often being single-minded is combined with being a bit of a nightmare to be around. She’s just not that.

It’s impossible to discuss “Selma” without mentioning how timely it is in its scenes of protest and police brutality. How do you think “Selma” fits in with the events that have occurred over the last month?
Well, we’re back to the divide, aren’t we? If you were ever going to have a moment in time when this film should come out in the 50 years since these events happened, it would be now. Not only would it be now, it would be now now. It would be this month. We would be having this conversation today. You can’t tell me between everything we’ve discussed already to when the film is being released to the fact that it’s a black woman who has made this — just in terms of where we are in history and how beautiful a thing that is — that it’s not divine timing. Whether you believe in that stuff or not, I truly believe the reason why this film is so pertinent for right now is that it shows this isn’t the first time. It shows that we are not a new generation for this and also how it was successfully dealt with. Peaceful protest. Strategy. Using the power of the image to bring the world together. That’s what happened in a sense.

Ferguson, I feel, was deemed a “black problem.” Eric Garner became an American problem. That’s the power of the image. Seeing him murdered onscreen has been the thing that has brought America and the world together to protest. Seeing Bloody Sunday on the Edmund Pettus Bridge is what brought the nation together, black and white, in 1965. The difference is that was about voting rights, and this is about police reform. There had to be federal intervention with voting rights; the federal government is stalling on intervening on this, to bring in independent bodies to police the police. It’s just clear that’s what is needed. No matter what they say about how difficult that is because it’s states’ rights. It was states’ rights with voting. It’s crazy how similar it is.

Did you get to meet anyone close to Dr. King in preparation for the role?
I met every one of his children and spoke with them. I actually became quite friendly with Dexter Scott King, his second son. I met Martin Luther King III. I actually didn’t meet Bernice King until the Friday before we were going to start shooting. I bumped into her at the King Center, if you would believe it — again, the divine! I was with a group of the actors who were going to be in the film, and she went up to everyone, deliberately leaving me to last. “So, who you playing?” she said. I was like, “Oh. My. Lord.” Dr. King’s voice is pretty deep, but I was like, in a high-pitched voice, “I’m going to be playing your daddy.” It was as bad as it could be. But by the time we finished our conversation, she ended up praying with me and giving me her blessing to play her dad. She and her elder brother saw the film recently and were very complimentary about it. She said mine is the best interpretation of her dad she’s seen. I will take it.

After seven years of having this role in your life, did you feel any letdown or hangover after you moved on to the next job?
There was no letdown. I was very happy to let this guy go. I wouldn’t say it was a burden, because I felt so privileged to do it, but there were moments where it was a real crossover. I stayed in character for the three months we were doing this. I, for one second, wouldn’t say I was him for that time, but I felt a little bit of what it may have been like. Just because you have to take it on. He lived through 13 years of that. I was very happy to walk away. I tell you that much.

‘Too Long; Didn’t Listen’ Ep. 6: ‘Women Aren’t Funny’ With Bonnie McFarlane And Marina Franklin

HuffPost Comedy Editors spend all day looking at funny things on the Internet. Now, they have a podcast. This is, “Too Long; Didn’t Listen.”

In a special sixth edition of “TL;DL,” Katla McGlynn sat down with the very funny Bonnie McFarlane and Marina Franklin ahead of their New York Comedy Festival panel entitled, “Women Aren’t Funny: Debunking The Myth” on Nov. 6 at Caroline’s.

Instead of our usual segments, comedians Bonnie and Marina offered their thoughts on the viral catcalling video and the comedy community’s various responses to it, then moved on to discuss the unfortunate misconception that women aren’t as funny as men.

Listen to Bonnie and Marina talk about their experiences as women, both on the street in NYC and on the stage as comedians in the episode below. Be sure to check out Bonnie’s documentary on the same subject, “Women Aren’t Funny,” and Marina’s all-female podcast, “Friends Like Us,” both on iTunes. Tickets are available for their NYCF panel featuring Blair Breard, Lea DeLaria and Judy Gold here.

Dax Shepard Didn’t Want A Wedding Band So He Got This Tattoo Instead

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell are so not your traditional celebrity couple. When the low-key twosome tied the knot last year at the Beverly Hills Courthouse, the whole thing cost them just $ 142.

So it’s fitting that Shepard went the untraditional, non-flashy route when it came to his wedding band — if you can even call it that. Instead of wearing a ring, the “This Is Where I Leave You” actor had a bell tattooed on his left ring finger in his wife’s honor. And it’s pretty adorable.

During an appearance on “Ellen” on Friday, Shepard discussed his decision to get inked in the name of love.

“I don’t like wearing jewelry, but I felt obliged to warn all the men that I’m taken,” he joked. “I thought a tattoo would be fitting. And her last name, conveniently, is an object I could tattoo.”

In the middle of the tattoo, you can see the letters K (for Kristen), L (for their 18-month-old daughter Lincoln) and a D that we can only assume stands for Dax. Or, given that the couple is expecting their second child together, perhaps it’s for baby number two.

Bell, on the other hand, does wear a ring — and as you might expect, it’s different and totally beautiful.

I Never Met a Story I Didn’t Like: Mostly True Tall Tales

I Never Met a Story I Didn’t Like: Mostly True Tall Tales

For years, Todd Snider has been one of the most beloved country-folk singers in the United States. He had a Top 40 hit with “Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues,” which gave national audiences the first taste of his insightful songwriting, at once satirical and sincere. Hailed by critics as one of the top albums of 2004, “East Nashville Skyline” was followed by “The Devil You Know” and “The Excitement Plan.” Snider’s songs took on George W. Bush and America’s recent involvement in foreign war, along with a host of more intimate topics. As good as Snider’s albums have been, his in-concert monologues are even better. His shows are a loose-limbed, informal experience: it’s often just him and a guitar. He introduces songs with stories that can run as long as twenty minutes, always displaying his charm and wit. As he’s allowed his storytelling to evolve along with his music, Snider has become not only a modern day Bob Dylan but a modern day Will Rogers as well–an everyman whose intelligence, self deprecation, experience, and, above all, humor make him a uniquely American character.

These Things Would Be Deal Breakers If We Didn’t Love Our Spouses So Much

Living with the love of your life can be awesome — the nightly Netflix binges and cuddle sessions are definite pluses, not to mention the convenience of regular sex and someone to help you eat all of your Trader Joe’s groceries before they go bad. But despite all the obvious perks, let’s be honest: it’s not always a walk in the park. Below, 11 Redditors vent about the little things that are hardest to accept about their significant others. Oh, the things we tolerate in the name of love…

1. “She leaves cups of water all around the house like the movie “Signs” was the most influential thing in her life.” – Vtepes

2. “Her favorite artist is Pitbull.” – weezermc78

3. “She just cannot seem to put the lid back on anything! Drives me insane. Milk, nail polish, you name it. I can’t tell you how many things I’ve spilled.” – Lukemaccc

4. “No matter what I feed him, he will always fart like a trombone in the morning.” – LicianDragon

5. “She keeps ketchup in the pantry after opening. The power struggle over ketchup storage raged on for our entire first year of marriage. I don’t think I have to tell you who won that battle… *Eats hot ketchup and sobs*.” – socially_bereaved

6. “She pours her milk before her cereal.” – phinsa123

7. “She thinks that if she opens her mouth to speak, at normal volume, in any room, I should be able to hear her, no matter where in the house I am, or what I’m doing (brushing teeth, cleaning dishes, water running, etc).” – mdavwa

8. “He doesn’t like cheese and will never watch my favorite shows. I love to cook for him, but having every meal be without cheese is like the seasons with no summer. Like rock ‘n roll without a drummer.” – wonderpickle2147

9. “He’s stronger and will always win when stealing the covers.” – aredditorsgf

10. “She signs up for everything! Even the giveaways that are obviously just trying to send you junk mail. Drives me crazy how full our mailbox is sometimes.” – Spreknor

11. “She gets cold really easily — which would not normally be too bad [except for the fact that] I get warm really easily… Also, to all the hot boyfriends and girlfriends: The technique I have perfected is to sleep with a foot or a leg out of the blankets and on the particularly warm nights, cuddle through the blankets.” – Ltjenkins

9 Weird Things You Didn’t Know Were Contagious

9 Weird Things You Didn’t Know Were ContagiousBut we often share this info without realizing it through body language, facial expressions and even scent. Talk about sharing the load: Research from the March 2012 issue of Social Neuroscience found that merely seeing an anxious person can up your own cortisol, a stress hormone. In other research from Social Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience, people became more alert when exposed to the undetectable odor of sweat from a stressed-out person. These cues may prepare us for potential danger, says Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in Stony Brook, NY.

8 TV Scenes You Didn’t Know Were Improvised

Over on Reddit, humble users “TRULY_MAGNFICENT” and “MakeMeASteak” have been rounding up famous movie scenes that were “unscripted.” There’s Full Metal Jacket, The Shinning, and Good Will Hunting, among others, as well as hundreds of suggestions for other films from equally modest commenters. It’s a pretty decent read, so I thought I might be interesting to round up TV scenes that were either entirely or partially improvised.
