Texas Man Guilty of Murdering and Dismembering College Student After Falsely Claiming She Died During Sex

A Texas man was convicted Monday of murdering a college student who was found dismembered and burned in 2016.

The 12-member jury rejected Charles Dean Bryant’s defense that he panicked only after the 24-year-old woman died during consensual “kinky” sex.

Jacqueline Vandagriff, a junior at Texas Woman’s University, vanished on the evening of Sept. 13, 2016 — not long after she spent time with Bryant, 31, at a bar in Denton, Texas. Her remains were later found burning in a plastic kiddie pool in a park near Lake Grapevine.

Police soon uncovered security footage of her sharing a drink with Bryant, and they said the two eventually left the bar together.

Authorities also suspect that Bryant, 31, updated Vandagraff’s Twitter account after her death.

The night before her body was found, a tweet on Vandagriff’s account read, “I’m glad I decided to get off tinder and waked into a bar.”

“Never knew I could feel like this,” reads the tweet that appeared on Vandagriff’s page on Sept. 15, one day after her charred corpse was recovered.

Bryant had been charged with capital murder in Vandagriff’s slaying.

During her opening statement on April 9, defense attorney Glynis McGinty told jurors that Bryant is only guilty of evidence tampering but was not guilty of murder.

McGinty argued that Bryant “freak out” after Vandagriff’s death, which the defense claimed occurred during sex, and tried to hide her body.

“He went to Walmart at 4 a.m. and bought a shovel and goes back to his house where he had left Jackie and tried to dig a hole but the earth was too hard,” she told the jury.

But the prosecution argued otherwise, pointing out that Vandagriff’s purse was found in a garbage can in Bryant’s home. The prosecution also cited evidence that Vandagriff was bound.

The indictment against Bryant stated that he “killed and caused serious bodily injury to Jacqueline Vandagriff using a zip tie, a knife or machete, and an unknown object.”

“Jackie had just started a new path at TWU,” prosecutor Lucas Allen said in his opening statement, according to local TV station WFAA. “It was a good path, until an evil, destructive figure, Charles Bryant, stepped .”

Jurors in Fort Worth agreed with the prosecution. They deliberated less than three hours before finding Bryant guilty of murder. He was also found guilty of tampering with evidence.

The punishment phase of the trial is underway. Bryant faces up to life in prison.

PEOPLE’s call to McGinty were not immediately returned and it was unclear if Bryant planned to appeal.

Mich. Parents Allegedly Refused Medical Treatment for Newborn Who Died: ‘God Makes No Mistakes’

A Michigan couple is charged with involuntary manslaughter after allegedly refusing the advice of a midwife that they seek medical treatment for their newborn daughter, who later died, PEOPLE confirms.

Joshua Barry Piland, 36, and his 30-year-old wife, Rachel Joy Piland, were charged on Sept. 20, more than six months after the Feb. 9 death of their daughter, Abigail, who was found dead at their home in Lansing, Michigan.

According to police testimony in court last week, the couple’s midwife had warned Rachel about the girl’s health the day after she was born and recommended Rachel seek medical attention, the Lansing State Journal reports.

“Rachel declined to seek any medical treatment for Abigail, stating, ‘God makes no mistakes,’ ” Lansing police detective Peter Scaccia testified, according to the State Journal. “She indicated to the midwife that the baby was fine.”

According to Scaccia, Rachel then canceled a follow-up appointment with the midwife.

Two days later, Abigail died from unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and kernicterus, conditions associated with jaundice, the State Journal reports.

Scaccia testified that the baby would have most likely survived had she received prompt treatment.

Rachel’s mother had noticed that the baby was coughing up blood and her color was off, the State Journal reports. But, Scaccia testified, Rachel “went to listen to sermons” after she told her mother about the midwife’s concerns.

Rachel’s mother urged her daughter to call the police after she saw blood coming from Aibigal’s nose, but Rachel allegedly refused, Scaccia said.

Later that morning, the baby was found dead in her bouncy seat and Joshua allegedly attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but had no success.

Joshua allegedly did not want to try CPR on his daughter because he had only performed it on adults, according to the State Journal.

“They then brought Abigail upstairs to pray for her,” Scaccia testified. “Joshua continued to massage Abigail, attempting to get her good air. Both Josh and reached out to friends and fellow church members to come to their home and pray for Abigail’s resurrection but never called the police.”

Police learned of the death after Rachel’s brother contacted them from California.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

At the scene, police “went upstairs and found a baby that had passed away and three other people praying for it,” Scaccia testified.

Neither Joshua nor Rachel has entered a plea. At a hearing last week, Rachel requested a court-appointed attorney but has not yet received one. Joshua has not retained an attorney.

The couple — who are allegedly involved with Faith Tech Ministries, a non-denominational Christian religious group with beliefs that include a “strong message in the area of divine healing” — was released from jail after posting $ 75,000 bond.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 5.

Messages left with the Pilands as well as with Faith Tech Ministries, Lansing police and the district attorney’s office were not immediately returned on Friday.

Obituary Says Man Died Peacefully After He’s Told ‘Trump Has Been Impeached’

Michael Garland Elliott has won 2017 — and he did so posthumously.

In an obituary published in The Oregonian/OregonLive, Michael Elliot’s last conversation was a bit of a white lie. He supposedly took his last breath right after his close friend, ex-wife Teresa Elliot, told him the president had been impeached.

“Though their marriage ran aground, their friendship only grew stronger and hers was the last voice Mike heard,” the obituary reads. “And the last thing she said to him was ‘Donald Trump has been impeached.’ Upon hearing that he took his final, gentle breath, his earthly work concluded.”

Teresa Elliot: You are a sly, brilliant human.

In addition to his political disinterests, the obituary depicted Elliott — who was apparently born in either 1940 or ‘41 — as the “sharpest dresser in town” and a man of many hobbies. He played on a semi-professional basketball team that involved him dressing in drag, and he apparently would often throw his golf clubs into trees out of frustration. When he could no longer play golf, due to his health, he “threw things at the TV instead.”

Michael Garland Elliott, we didn’t know you. But, damn, we wish we did.

Gilbert Baker, Creator of Iconic Gay Pride Rainbow Flag, Has Died at 65

The man who tie-dyed and hand-stitched the rainbow flag that has become the worldwide symbol for gay pride and the LGBTQ community has died. He was 65.

Gilbert Baker, who described himself as a “gay Betsy Ross,” was found dead on Friday in his New York City home, the New York Times reports.

“Gilbert Baker was a pioneer in the gay rights movement,” LGBT Network CEO Dr. David Kilmnick said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“It is a great loss to the LGBT community and all Americans and he will be greatly missed, but leaves us with a symbol of unity and pride that will carry on forever.”

Cleve Jones, a gay rights activist and friend of Baker, told the Times that Baker had a stroke many years ago but had not been sick recently.

Baker created the flag in 1978. That year, Harvey Milk, a San Francisco politician and gay rights leader, asked Baker to create an emblem for the movement (Milk was assassinated that year).

Along with volunteers, Baker tie-dyed and pieced together the first gay pride flags at a gay community center, unveiling them in a June gay pride parade, the Times reports.

“We stood there and watched and saw the flags, and their faces lit up,” Jones told the publication. “It needed no explanation. People knew immediately that it was our flag.”

Terminally Ill Mom Whose Best Friend Promised to Adopt Her Four Kids Has Died

Sara Hankins, the mother of four who made headlines in December when her longtime best friend promised to adopt her kids, died Monday after a debilitating battle with ALS, according to her online obituary. She was 36.

According to the obituary posted by a funeral parlor, Hankins was surrounded by her family at her home in Milan, Illinois, at the time of her death. She’s survived by her four children — Alexis, 18, Cayden, 11, Micah, 9, and Amara, 8, — as well as her grandparents, mother, siblings, siblings’ spouses and nieces and nephews.

Tributes for Hankins poured in online, where she was described by those who knew her as “a beautiful amazing woman.”

“She enjoyed being a cosmetologist and sharing stories while making people beautiful,” her family wrote in her obituary. “She loved cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Above all else, being a mother was the most important thing to Sara.”

An open house dedicated to celebrating her life took place on Saturday. The family has asked memorials be made to the Sara Hankins Memorial Fund. She will be cremated.

Hankins best friend — Missy Armstrong — previously told PEOPLE that as Hankins entered the final stages of battle with the neurodegenerative disease (for which there is no cure), her thoughts were only with the future of her four children.

“The thought of where they would go was killing her more than the ALS was,” Armstrong, told PEOPLE. “It consumed her everyday thoughts, because none of her family members were able to take in all four kids together.”

That’s what motivated Armstrong to adopt her friend’s children.

“I decided to step in,” the 42-year-old explained. “I knew in my heart this was the right thing to do, that this was how it was meant to be.”

The two met at La’ James cosmetology school in the town of East Moline, Illinois, in 1999 and “were best friends instantly.” And while Armstrong had two children of her own — Kairee, 14, and Alexa, 22 — she was happy to carry on her best friend’s legacy.

“I’ll be here for the kids forever, now,” Armstrong said. “They’re family.”

”I hug Sara’s babies extra tight because she can’t hold them,” she added.

As of December, Armstrong was still looking to gain full guardianship of Alexis, Cayden, Micah and Amara and eventually to adopt them.

She had also raised over $ 22,000 to put a down-payment on “a perfect five-bedroom” for the kids — which Hankins had helped her pick out.

Julie Andrews Almost Died Filming The ‘Mary Poppins’ Umbrella Scene

Julie Andrews appeared on “The Late Show” Friday night, where she told Stephen Colbert about what it was like to actually film that memorable umbrella scene from the 1964 movie, “Mary Poppins.”

Andrews explained that to pull off that flying sequence, she actually performed the stunt herself while wearing a painful harness. But the supposedly load-bearing wires she was attached to high above the stage didn’t end up working as planned.

“There was a very dangerous day right at the end of filming when I was in this excruciatingly painful harness,” Andrews told Colbert, as she pointed upward. “And I was hanging around up there for the longest time with the umbrella.”

After floating in the sky for quite some time, Andrews sensed the wires giving out on her.

“I thought I felt the wire leave [and] drop about six inches … I was nervous,” Andrews recalled. “So, I called down and I said, ‘Excuse me, when you do let me down, could you let me down really gently, because I felt myself slip and I just don’t feel too safe up here.’”

The crew called back that they would be sure to bring her down very softly.

That’s not what ended up happening.

I plummeted to the stage
Julie Andrews

“I plummeted to the stage,” Andrews said. “And there was an awful silence for a minute and I did let fly with a few Anglo-Saxon four letter words, I have to admit.” The actress smiled at this polished admittance of crassness, much to the delight of the studio audience.

Although Poppins takes flight a few times in the movie, you can likely see the scene Andrews is referring to in her first introduction to the children. Typically when Poppins is flying, the character is completely still (due to rudimentary special effects), but Andrews’ body is moving around while flying with the umbrella near the end of this clip:

Dr. Henry Heimlich, the Man Who Invented the Heimlich Maneuver, Has Died: Report

Dr. Henry Heimlich, the surgeon who invented the life-saving Heimlich maneuver, has died, according to NBC News. He was 96.

Heimlich’s son, Phil, told NBC News that his father passed away on Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

“My father was a great man who saved many lives,” Phil, an attorney and former Hamilton County commissioner, told NBC News. “He will be missed not only by his family but by all of humanity.”

According to NBC News, Heimlich was director of surgery at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati in 1974 when he developed the Heimlich maneuver, which involves a series of thrusts to the abdomen to create a flow of air to the lungs in choking victims. The flow of air can then push out objects in the windpipe that are causing choking.

The maneuver was widely adopted by public health authorities and restaurant associations — making Heimlich a household name and saving countless lives.

Charles Krupa/AP

As it turned out, Heimlich had to wait many years to actually use the maneuver himself. In May, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he used the move for the first time earlier this year when coming to the aid of a fellow resident at the Deupree House senior living facility.

“When I used it and recovered quickly, it made me appreciate how wonderful it has been to be able to save all those lives,” he said at the time.

The Heimlich maneuver wasn’t his only invention. According to NBC News, he also developed a chest drain valve that was credited with saving soldiers and civilians during the Vietnam war. However, he drew sharp criticism for a theory that injecting patients with a curable form of malaria could trigger immunity against the HIV virus.
